Due to the ultrafine particle size required for effective processing of chromite ores, dewatering of the concentrates presents a challenge. It is not uncommon for the ore to have elevated moisture contents even after dewatering, which must be reduced to required levels of between 8% and 10% by mass for further processing. Contact sorption drying has shown promise in test work on fine coal. This method was used to study the dewatering of chromite on a laboratory scale using 3 mm spherical activated alumina ceramic beads as a sorbent. Three different sorbent-to-chromite mass ratios, namely 0.5:1, 1:1, and 2:1, were tested with different process conditions, including dewatering in a stationary and a rotatingl bed. The experimental work showed that it was possible to achieve the target moistures in less than 10 minutes, irrespective of the sorbent-to-chromite ratio used. Ratios of 1:1 or higher, however, proved to be the best. The sorbent reusability at mass ratios of 1:1 and 2:1 were therefore tested. With a 1:1 mass ratio, the sorbents could be reused for three cycles, while with 2:1 ratio, the number of cycles increased to six. The sorbent-to-chromite mass ratio used had a significant influence on the required contact time and the reusability of the sorbents.

A principal requirement in the design of a backfill transportation pipeline is the accurate prediction of the values of key slurry flow parameters. Input variables, such as particle size and solids concentration, are usually determined by the load-bearing requirements of the placed fill. It is therefore necessary to identify the optimum conditions of transport for a particular combination of input variables. This paper critically reviews the methods available to predict the values of flow parameters in slurry pipeline systems in the light of experimental data generated at a test facility. Particular reference is made to rod milled waste and deslimed tailings transport systems and, in the case of the former, it is shown that both pumping and load-bearing requirements can be optimized.

During the period October 2003 to June 2004, a containerized optical sorting pilot plant was operated at Kloof Gold Mine on a waste rock dump. In this paper, we describe the test work and its results leading to the decision to operate this pilot plant. This paper presents the operational data and financial figures achieved during this project, in particular, for the month of June 2004 when the plant was run at full capacity on three shifts, 24 hour operation. These results are also extrapolated and presented to show the profitability of such an operation at today?s gold price levels and cost structure.

In view of this the Chairman proposed that the paper on flash smelting be introduced and discussed first, after which the remaining three papers would be introduced followed by discussion on all three.Dr Cocquerel, who presented the first paper, used some typical flow diagrams to illustrate the process and stated that the program considered only steady-state operations and did not take into account the dynamical changes. Subjective judgment was necessary for the preparation of input data and some degree of user appreciation was required.Dr Cocquerel said that no work bad yet been done on an optimization program, but that this was being considered. Such a program would require a large amount of physical and chemical data which were not yet available. The variables to be optimized were the energy and material consumptions and the loss of metal in the slag.The Chairman opened the discussion by asking Dr Cocquerel if he could give a brief description of the flash smelting process for the benefit of those not familiar with the subject. Dr Coquerel replied that in the Outokumpu process con¬centrates were injected directly into the furnace, and that the process was somewhat analogous to flash distillation or evaporation processes, but was perhaps closer to the burning of pulverized fuel.The process had two distinct advantages. First, the heat evolved in the smelting reaction was used to heat the furnace, which resulted in less fuel consumption, and, second, the effluent gases were cheaper to treat than the effluent gases from other pyrometallurgical processes. This was important particularly in view of the current interest in pollution problems.Mr P. Marais thought that the authors had done themselves an injustice by not including details of the very complex processes taking place in the furnace."

An editorial in the April 1990 edition of Mining Magazine is worth a wider audience in South Africa, particularly as the SAIMM enters its own centenary decade and the process of change in the minerals industry world-wide makes increasing demands on the professionalism of its leaders. The editorial considers the changing status of engineers, who up to the 1880s had been held in high regard by society. Alumina and bauxite Economists forecast a slower economic growth rate in 1990, but expect continued increase in demand for aluminum at a 3 per cent annual rate during the decade. As part of a broader digital technology-enabled transformation programme, a major mining company is systematically implementing Advanced Process Control (APC) solutions and associated instrumentation throughout their operations. This paper highlights the approach and benefits of this holistic approach for a specific instrumentation installation, and APC installation at a South African coal processing plant. For the coal processing plant under consideration, a systematic approach was followed. Process sections/units are considered from upstream to downstream processing. APC solutions are designed for each process section and each process section is interrogated in terms of availability of sufficient process measurements to ensure stable, capable, and ultimately, optimised performance. Where insufficient process measurements are available, instrumentation upgrades are implemented. Finally, APC solutions are implemented, and evaluated in terms of productivity, safety, health, and environmental benefits. For the flotation section, an opportunity was identified to install froth sensors. The installed froth sensors provide measurements on froth velocity, bubble size, height, colour, and stability. The improved visibility that the froth sensors provided on the flotation process resulted in quick gains in terms of productivity: for example, instability in the feed to the flotation section could be quantified. This resulted in targeted process troubleshooting in an upstream thickener, and subsequent improvement of process stability, and reduced feed variance. The measurements from the froth sensors were further integrated in an APC solution. Proportional mass pull contributions per cell and per line can be inferred from the froth sensors, serving as controlled variables, while pulp level set points serve as the manipulated variables. On-off tests indicated that the advanced process control solution provided increases in yield and product quality.

It is well known that the ability to influence project value reduces significantly as planning progresses and decisions regarding project parameters are made. However, at the prefeasibility stage in particular, where one of the main aims should be to evaluate a wide range of options in order to select the best for more detailed further study, there is often a reluctance to spend the time and money needed to do this rigorously. This paper demonstrates, by a number of case study examples, how significant increases in value may be obtained by fully evaluating the combinations of alternatives for various project design parameters, including (though not limited to) mining methods, haulage methods, mining rates, processing methods and rates, sequencing of mining, and cut-off grades, with changes and upgrades over time where applicable. The additional value unlocked is typically orders of magnitude greater than the additional cost of the more comprehensive study. The dangers of misuse of simplistic sensitivity analyses and failure to identify how strategies might change in response to changes in external factors are also illustrated, and the importance of selecting the best `grade descriptor' is discussed.

Mineral processing efficiency depends on various factors and among them includes head grade fluctuations feeding the processing plant. Head grades can fluctuate beyond an admissible range, implying in recovery decrease for the mineral of interest. Grades feeding the processing plant depend on the geological domain which is being mined and on the mining schedule. Therefore, it is necessary to keep grade variability controlled. Blending piles are an efficient alternative to reduce grade fluctuations. The main factors influencing blending efficiency are the pile size or its mass and the number of layers used to pile up. Large piles are more efficient to reduce variability, however, there are economical and operational limits associated with them. This study investigates a methodology to analyse the ideal pile size to reach an acceptable variability given the in situ grade fluctuations. Geostatistical simulations provide the means to assess grade variability using an optimized mining schedule. These block grades are used to simulate any given pile throughout the mine`s life. The methodology was illustrated using a case study to control coal ash content at a mine supplying ROM coal to a power plant. Keywords: homogenization, piles, geostatistical simulation.

FINANCE The annual accounts, which follow this report, reflect a healthy position and show that measures taken by Council over the last few years to boost income have been successful. A higher income was needed not only to meet rising costs but also so that the services provided by the Institute for its members could be expanded. This year's income of R55 025 showed a further increase compared with last year's figure of R48 307. Income from subscriptions was higher mainly owing to an increased number of Company Affiliates, and this is indicative of the support given by mining and metallurgical companies to the good work being done by the Institute. Further sales of publications of the symposia held over the last few years again made a useful contribution to income of R4560. The first Winter School held in 1973 yielded a surplus of R7495 after the expenses had been deducted from the income received from registration fees. The cost of administering the Institute increased by R2212 compared with the previous year. Included in this was a donation of R1000 to the A.S. & T.S. Trust Fund. FINANCE The annual accounts, which follow this report, indicate that income again exceeded expenditure by a margin of R21 410 (last year R28 524). This year's income of R71 184 showed a further increase compared with last year's figure of R55 025. Costs, however, also in¬creased, and it is calculated that, excluding non-recurrent costs, the cost of running the Institute in¬creased by R6 654 from R25 501 to R33 155 for the current year. The main increases were involved in secretarial fees, stationery and print¬ing, and in publication of the Journal. All indications are that costs will continue to rise, and we have been advised that the A.S. & T.S. will be increasing their secretarial fees by 25 per cent in the year ahead to meet their rising costs. This year's surplus was derived entirely from the revenue from sales of publications (R13 644) and a surplus from the 1974 Winter School (RIO 654). There can be no certainty that revenue from these sources can be repeated each year. Our funds are in a satisfactory position because of these worth¬while activities, but the administrat¬ion of the Institute should not de¬pend on them. Council will accord¬ingly have to give consideration in the year ahead to an upward adjust¬ment of subscriptions to meet rising costs.

Trackless mining at the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited by C. F. HEWS* (Visitor) An account is given of the evolution and advantages of trackless equipment in the underground operations of International Nickel's Ontario Division, with special reference to fill-method mining, development practice, sublevel caving, and induced block caving. Details of maintenance, environmental control, and operator training are also given.

Professor R.F. Sandenbergh matriculated at Germiston Afrikaans High School, and then he obtained the degrees of B.Eng. (Chem.) in 1972, M.Eng. (Chem.) in 1975, and D.Eng. (Met.) in 1983-all from the University of Pretoria. Mr J.A.D. Britz matriculated in 1958 at the Roodepoort Hoerskool, and joined the mining industry in 1959 as a student mine official at the Rand Mines Training Centre. Mr J.A. Cruise matriculated at Durban High School and joined Union Corporation as a Learner Official in 1962. He was awarded a scholarship to read for B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in mining engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand

The aim of this study was to examine the effect of grain size distribution control of the raw material mixture on the permeability of the green sinter bed and the properties of the produced sinter. This was achieved by evaluating the granulation characteristics of the sinter mixture (moisture content, granulation time and mean granule diameter) in terms of its green bed permeability, and evaluating the productivity of the sinter bed, the coke rate, tumble index (TI), abrasion index (AI), reduction disintegration index(RDI) and reducibility (RI) of the produced sinter. The raw sinter mixtures contained combinations of Thabazimbi iron ore, Sishen iron ore, coke, lime and return fines. The grain size distributions were controlled by removing the ?0.5 mm size fractions of the return fines and coke, and the ?1 mm size fraction of lime. Of the examined mixtures, a mixture of 20 mass% Thabazimbi iron ore, 80 mass% Sishen iron ore and fluxes where the coke, lime and return fines were all sized had the highest granulation effectiveness and permeability. The sintering properties of the mixtures in which the grain size distributions were controlled, were very similar for all the mixtures, but superior to the base case mixture in which the grain size distribution was not controlled. KOTZE INTRODUCTION Climatic-room acclimatization was introduced in the gold-mining industry in 1965 and was rapidly adopted by all mines because it reduced the number of days required for heat acclimatization from 12 to 8. The method has been adequately described in previous papers1, 2 but, briefly, requires four hours of heat exposure per day while the work rate is progessively increased from 35 W on Day 1 to 70 W on Days 7 and 8. Considerable practical knowledge and effective use of empirical evidence is required in the design of tunnel support systems. In many instances, it is unclear how individual support elements interact with fractured rock and which elements of the support system are critical in controlling and containing the movement of material proximate to the excavation. The present paper outlines a displacement discontinuity approach that allows the coupling of surface constraints, in the form of liner or mesh material, to an explicit representation of time-dependent rock discontinuity creep movements. The method is illustrated for a simple square-shaped tunnel profile in which the fracture zone is mobilized by an imposed stress field. A crucial aspect of the model is the computational treatment of the coupling between the liner material and there presentation of the fractured rock mass. This allows the response of the liner material to be assessed quantitatively in terms of the possible reduction of movement in the rock mass. The importance of installing the liner timeously after the excavation is formed is illustrated in a specific example. A number of computational difficulties in simulating liner-rock interaction mechanisms are identified.

The Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine (BRPM) is a joint venture between Rustenburg Platinum Mines Limited and Royal Bafokeng Resources (Pty) Ltd (Bafokeng). The mining lease has been granted over Boschkoppie 104JQ and is located approximately 10km south of the Pilanesberg Alkaline Complex. The Merensky Reef, which constitutes the principal ore body, is geologically complex. A relationship between its geological variability and the associated mineralisation has been established by defining a number of facies types. The Merensky Reef has been sub-divided into seven distinct facies types: the pegmatoidal facies, contact facies, FW1 pothole facies, FW3pothole facies, FW6 pothole facies, and FW7 pothole facies. The Merensky Reef, which does not form part of the potholed reef, has a large component of footwall mineralisation. The pothole facies, in contrast, has mineralisation located in the hangingwall. Statistical analysis of the facies types indicates that they are unique populations and hence need to be evaluated independently. The mining lease has distinct structural domains that have added additional complications to evaluation of the Merensky Reef. The Merensky facies on BRPM exhibit unique geological and statistical characteristics within well-defined structural blocks. Due to the extreme variability of the Merensky Reef on BRPM a unique approach has been developed, within Anglo Platinum, to evaluate the deposit. Mining cuts are defined and composited for the individual facies types, and then modelled individually by applying known geological controls. The resultant grade models are weighted based on statistical and local geological knowledge. The object of weighting the facies is to replicate the variability observed in the ore body. The introduction of stringent geological controls to the evaluation process has resulted in increased confidence in the in situgrades estimated as an input to the mine planning process
