The formula developed by Salamon and Munro in 1967 has been used for the past 22 years in the design of bord-and-pillar workings in South African collieries. This paper re-assesses the formula In the light of Its past performance and examines the effect of mining method on coal-pillar strength. An account is given of the extension of the formula so that it can be applied beyond the empirical range for which it was derived, and the advantages of the extended formula (the squat-pillar formula) are described.

There are no manuals or handbooks for budding mill superintendents or process plant managers. Most who obtain this level of responsibility have gained their training from watching the good and bad of their predecessors and the successful ones have themselves graduated from the school of hard knocks. This paper attempts to provide some helpful guidelines and direction for those who aspire to better manage a mineral processing facility. The authors have 20 years combined experience in senior management roles at nine different mineral processing operations in Australia and overseas, covering gold, base metals and mineral sands. This summary of tips and pitfalls will hopefully benefit future leaders in mineral processing and metallurgy.

Flyrock remains a significant threat to the health and safety of mine employees and integrity of infrastructure, as well as to the safety of the neighbouring communities and their property. This investigation was motivated by the general lack of fundamental research and mathematically quantifiable data in the literature regarding the relationship between blast design parameters and their impact on flyrock. The focus was to develop a concept that can be used to mathematically quantify the trajectory of flyrock resulting from a blast, which can be used for future research. The ultimate goal for this technique, once it has been fully developed, is to: ➤ Enable mining operations to generate a database with accurate historical flyrock measurements resulting from their blasting operations ➤ Allow research teams to conduct scientific investigations into flyrock and the impact of various blast design parameters ➤ Generate point-cloud data to visualize blasts and flyrock in a virtual reality environment for training and education purposes. This paper summarizes a conceptual technique and preliminary fieldwork that was carried out to determine the technique’s feasibility and motivate further development. The results show conclusively that a modified photogrammetric technique is capable of capturing flyrock data for further processing and analysis. The data acquisition procedure can, at this point, be used to meet the first aim of the project, namely to gather a field database of historical flyrock generation. Further development of the technique is ongoing and it is envisioned that the scientific-based technique will provide a method whereby future flyrock studies will be comparable and that assumptions will be limited.

Rock mass damage induced by mining increases the fracture frequency and joint aperture width in the pit walls and rock mass behind open pit mine slopes. The depth and intensity of this mechanical damage relative to the pre-mining state is not well understood and yet is a major factor in the development of slope stability models and operational guidelines. The induced damage can be partitioned into domains or zones. The blast damage zone is essentially a ‘free flow’ rock mass volume, which transitions quite rapidly into the excavation damage zone, which extends beyond that. In both zones, transient high in situ water pressures are often linked to unstable slope conditions. Whereas rock damage can enhance passive depressurisation in the rock mass, high infiltration rates on the other hand, as one could expect during rainstorm events, will decrease slope stability within the dilated pit rock mass, especially in the blast damage zone-excavation damage zone, by increasing pore pressures for short periods of time. Ice jacking and freshet are additional factors to consider in (sub) arctic environments and can be exacerbated by unfavorable rock fabric orientation. On a local scale, brittle deformation damage zones, in the form of faults, can contribute to slope instability, or enhanced stability because of slope depressurisation, depending on their location and orientation relative to the pit shape and the water sources. In this study, the shapes of the damage zones and their anticipated impact on infiltration and/or passive depressurisation are considered for different pit morphologies, rock mass conditions, in situ stress, and hydrogeological settings. Some unusual hydrological situations, like mining towards rivers and lakes and the potential effects on pore pressures, are also considered. This investigation has resulted in the development of a method to adjust initial hydraulic conductivity values used to estimate transient pore pressure conditions found in rock masses exposed in different pit morphologies and stress regimes as well as discontinuities’ orientation relative to open faces within the open pit mine. The changes in K values and pore pressures can then be used to determine hydrogeological influence more accurately on future pit slope stability.

The Brucutu iron ore mine (Minas Gerais, Brazil), is Vale`s largest iron producing operation achieving around 21 million tons by flotation of iron ore pellet feed per annum. The run of mine is mainly composed of hematite (70%) and quartz (30%). After preparation (comminution and sizing), the slurry is submitted to reverse cationic flotation of quartz under basic conditions (pH=10.5). Corn starch (500g/t) is used to depress Fe-bearing minerals and alkyl (C10) ether amine is the collector for quartz. The flotation circuit is arranged in a “coarse” section utilizing dated 28m3 square Wemco cells, and a “fine” section utilizing modern 160m3 tank cells. The “coarse” flotation circuit treats material from the deslime cyclone underflow while the “fine” circuit treats material from the deslime cyclone overflow and the pulp product from the “coarse” circuit scavenger 2 bank. Evaluation of process performance is of high importance as even small gains can lead to large improvements for this high throughput plant. Cell-by-cell samples of the froth products, selected feed and pulp-products were analyzed for flow-rate, overall chemical composition, and particle size distribution. Bank-by-bank samples of the feed, froth and pulp products were analyzed on an assay-by-size basis. In addition, the flotation cells were hydrodynamically characterized and gas dispersion parameters assessed. The detailed experimental program resulted in a thorough characterization of the process and enough information to produce a calibrated floatability component model. Longer mainline residence time results in significant Fe2O3 losses while yielding little benefit in terms of SiO2 grade. Scavenger 2 has twice the residence time of scavenger 1 while having to treat only 10% of the SiO2; resulting in high Fe2O3 recoveries to the froth and poor separation. In addition, it is shown that the Fe2O3 exhibits true flotation behavior resulting in increased Fe2O3 losses. The detailed data collection campaign coupled with in depth data analysis and modelling gives unprecedented information and highlights avenues for optimization that was previously unknown. "The variability of copper mineralization at Kansanshi mine significantly affects the efficiencies of the processes used to recover copper. Quantifying this variability is therefore essential for monitoring and optimizing the performance of the concentrator, which comprises three different flotation circuits (sulphide, mixed, and oxide) and an atmospheric leach circuit. Onsite automated scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (Auto-SEM-EDS) is used to analyse routine weekly composite samples for each circuit, providing detailed analyses of bulk mineralogy, copper deportment to different minerals, mineral liberation, and associations. Weekly mineralogical trends are used to assess changes in process performance, and characterization of the copper losses has inspired a number of projects to target the specific particle types responsible for the main losses. In this paper we describe the relationship between mineralogy and plant performance at Kansanshi, and discus IntroductionKansanshi is a copper and gold mine located in the Northwestern Province of Zambia, with an annual production in the region of 250 000 t of copper and 160 000 ounces of gold. Ore mined from the epigenetic vein-hosted deposit is classified into three ore types based on the extent of oxidation and supergene enrichment. Sulphide, oxide, and mixed ore are fed to separate mineral processing circuits tailored for recovery of the dominant copper minerals in each. After comminution to a target grind size of 80% passing 150 µm, each ore type is subjected to flotation to recover the copper sulphide minerals (chalcopyrite, bornite, chalcocite, covellite). The oxide float tails and a large proportion of the mixed float tails are then treated by atmospheric leaching to extract copper from the remaining copper-hosting minerals, which include cuprite, malachite, chrysocolla, and delafossite. Some native copper is recovered by flotation and some of it is recovered by leaching. A small portion of the combined concentrate from all circuits is subjected to high-pressure leaching and the rest is sent to the smelter. Sulphuric acid produced during smelting is used for the atmospheric leach."

JournelIn his presentation Mr Wiik said that unrolling could be regarded as a reversal of the natural process of folding, so that the aim of an unrolling procedure would be the reconstruction of original pre-tectonic conditions. While simply formulated, this aim might not always be achieved. The geometrical relationship between points on the deformed surface and corresponding points on the original surface is process-dependent, and a true reconstruction could be achieved only if the deformation history were known in detail.In this computer unrolling procedure all these complexities were ignored. Referring to one particular marker horizon, Mr Wiik said that it was assumed in the procedure that this marker was deposited as a horizontal stratum and that it had subsequently been deformed by simple flexure-type folding.The procedure allowed the geologist to incorporate his knowledge and conception of the deposit through repeated re-contouring with dummy points. This 'manumatic' aspect of the procedure had proved invaluable, not only in resolving specific unrolling problems but also in making the system more acceptable to the geologists in general.Unrolling served towards removing what might be termed `tectonic noise' superimposed on the primary distribution patterns for regionalized variables such as metal content and orebody thickness. From this point of view, variograms derived on the basis of unrolled-plan co-ordinates should be more meaningful in terms of depositional environment than are variograms calculated from a normal map projection.Mr M. M. Oosterveld remarked that it appeared from the paper that there were problems in applying the unrolling technique to ore reserve calculation, and asked whether there were not other methods that might be used for that purpose.Mr Wiik replied that at present unrolling played only a minor role in practical ore reserve estimation within Roan Consolidated Mines, Limited. The techniques currently in use differed from one orebody to another, but in general they involved projection onto a vertical longitudinal section or a horizontal plan, with subsequent grid interpolation by means of a standard computer contouring package."

Since the first application of solvent extraction as part of the hydrometallurgical processing of copper, several studies have been carried out to optimize extractant formulations. In 2006, Solvay developed the ACORGA® OPT series of solvent-extraction reagents to optimize copper transfer by use of a blended formulation containing both aldoxime and ketoxime as well as selected modifiers. The incorporation of selected modifiers in these blended reagents resulted in increased copper transfer, due to the interaction between the modifier and oximes within the blend. By changing the ketoxime concentration and ratio of modifier to aldoxime, the strength of the formulation was optimized to enhance copper transfer and improve Cu:Fe selectivity. This formulation is well known in the African region under the ACORGA® OPT5540 name and provides the best performance at the conditions of agitated leach plants with pregnant leach solutions that fluctuate in Cu grade and pH. The traditional route utilised for the recovery of Platinum Group Minerals (PGMs) in South Africa involves the concentration of ore by flotation, followed by smelting to produce a PGM rich matte, which is then digested hydrometallurgically to solubilise base metals and Platinum Group Elements (PGE). HCl/Cl2 is conventionally used for PGE dissolution from concentrated material, which is an aggressive reagent associated with high maintenance costs as well as environmental concerns. Of interest is the leaching of PGMs directly from mineral ores, low grade concentrates and tailings in a cyanide-ferricyanide system as a more sustainable alternative. This system has shown favourable Pt recoveries among the Pt minerals, but with sperrylite (PtAs2) displaying highly refractory behaviour. The dissolution of sperrylite is investigated in a cyanide-ferricyanide system in the context of an electrochemical study involving OCP, chrono-amperometry and cyclic voltammetry. This approach allows the assessment of leaching characteristics as well as the investigation of surface passivation, which is believed to contribute to poor Pt recoveries. Raise-boring experiences in the gold mines of the Anglo American Corporation Group by J. W. Wilson M.Sc., M.I.M.M., F.S.A.I.M.M., M.A.I.M.E. and P. C. Graham M.Sc. (Eng.) Gold mining is being carried out at ever-increasing depths in South Africa. For reasons of safety and human comfort, it is becoming imperative for raises to be developed by means other than conventional drilling and blasting. Raise-boring is an attractive alternative method. Initial raise-boring experiences in South African gold mines showed disappointingly high costs due to the abrasivity and difficulty of drilling Witwatersrand quartzites. Consequently, a research and development project was instigated with the objective of making raise-boring an economically viable technique in hard abrasive rock. A Robbins 61R raise-borer was made available to the Research and Development team and a number of raises have been drilled. During these trials two advances in cutter design were tested. This paper presents the results obtained, including drilling costs, and provides details of the equipment used.

"Accurate delineation of the contact between a kimberlite pipe and country rock at production level depths is a challenge due to limited geological data. Geological information is obtained from widely spaced diamond core boreholes which are drilled either from surface or from higher mining levels within the pipe. Kimberlite pipe/country rock contacts are notoriously irregular and variable, further reducing the confidence in contact positions defined by the drill-holes. At Finsch Diamond Mine (FDM), the opportunity arose to further improve the confidence in the contact positions relative to the planned slot (end) positions of each sublevel cave tunnel during the development stage of these tunnels. As a result, the accuracy of the 3D geological model has improved.The use of diamond drill core for this purpose is expensive due to site establishment requirements. The lengthy time taken during site establishment also delays the development of tunnels and support cycles, thereby extending the completion dates. FDM has reduced delays during development by adopting percussion drilling, in conjunction with gamma ray logging. The S36 drill rig is mounted on a moveable platform and does not require a costly and lengthy site establishment. The holes are generally drilled (0°/flat) on grade elevation, and these holes could also be drilled from the rim tunnels (developed in waste) into the kimberlite pipe. A single-boom production drill rig is normally used to drill holes about 20 m in length.On completion of the contact delineation drilling, gamma logging of the holes is conducted using the GeoVista geophysical sonde (or probe) to log the natural gamma signature of the dolomite/ kimberlite contact. The advantage of this tool is that the readings are continuous within centimetre intervals, and due to contrasting characteristics between kimberlite (rich in clay minerals) and dolomite, the contact position can be determined accurately. The better definition of contact positions also adds value to tunnel stopping distance in terms of developing the tunnel’s slot at the optimum distance from the contact (easier blasting of longhole rings, avoidance of contact overbreak and premature waste ingress, and other matters relating to extraction of ore from these tunnels). This method is highly successful and has reduced development costs (on-time completion), improved definition of the pipe’s contact position for geological modelling, improved blast design, and mitigated early waste ingress by maintaining the contact’s integrity."

In the present study, an innovative comminution technology of high-voltage pulse discharge was proposed for galena to weaken the mechanical property. The results of pre-treatment experiments indicated that the optimal operating conditions of spherical gap spacing 25 mm, pulse numbers 120, and loading voltage 25 kV were obtained, where the relative grindability of pretreated products was improved significantly, although with the prolonging of grinding time, the superiority of high-voltage electric pulses was gradually weakened. The galena ores were subjected to a high-voltage pulse discharge, and then the crack generating along the boundary between galena and gangue was observed under an optical microscope, and the surface burning which appeared in the ores. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) results indicated that the pretreated products were in a state of melting and then condensation, accompanied by some pore formation. Pulsed discharge pre-treatment not only produced more micro-cracks and cracks in the sample but also extended the original crack. This paper, which adopts a philosophical approach, attempts to analyse the contribution that the computer is capable of making in geological analysis, financial evaluation, and mine project control. Also examined are some reasons for non-utilization of these capabilities. As with most computer associated problems, the cause is primarily human and not mechanical. The paper gives one numerical example of the analysis of geological data and one of the evaluation of mine-design data. The values used in the examples are intended only to emphasize certain points and are not necessarily reproducible.

JoughinMr Turgay Gurun, in presenting his paper, indicated that this simulator was no purely theoretical exercise, but that the model had been used in the design of crushing plants of capacities ranging from 3 000 tons per day to 66 000 tons per day, and that recently the design of a plant of capacity of 99 000 tons per day had been studied.The crushing plant simulator was an independent portion of a much more comprehensive simulator for the design of a. complete recovery plant. It would be possible to use each section of this simulator on its own, and simulators would be designed to cover flotation concentrates, cash flow analyses of the entire project, and so on.Each simulator would be backed by a comprehensive data bank. For example, the crushing plant simulator was backed by such a data bank which included the performance and cost data from five manufacturers for an average of 30 items of process and materials handling equipment each. This meant that data preparation involved generally less work than would be required for a manual calculation. On average, data preparation for one run took 30 minutes and three minutes of computer time on an IBM 360/40 completed the run. The model could be valuable as a design tool in that it allowed the designers an opportunity to make a thorough examination of many alternative designs. It was also of value to plant operators as it could be used to predict the consequences of operating decisions.This paper generated much interest and there were numerous questions and contributions, so many, in fact, that the discussion had to be cut short.It was pointed out by Mr K. F. Lane that crushing plants represented a very large capital investment. A plant designed for 40 000 tons per day at 98 per cent efficiency might well in practice be run at 50 000 tons per day at, say, 83 per cent efficiency. He asked how, therefore, their design could be investigated without building economic criteria into the model? The author conceded that this was a tender point. He would have liked to have given facilities for more variability of the metallurgical information. He pointed out, however, that while there was no overdesign for conservatism built into his system, some overdesign was inevitable as the performance characteristics given by the manufacturers were generally conservative. Also, in his system, if lower recovery was allowed for, the system would nut through more tonnage."

The use of backfill for regional and local support is receiving increasing attention in the South African mining industry. To ensure that fill materials meet the purposes for which they are intended, a test procedure to characterize the load-deformation characteristics for a particular fill was developed. The major variables identified as influencing the load-bearing proper- ties of backfill include particle size distribution, porosity, width-to-height ratio, strain rate, confinement, water content, and additives. The influence of these variables on the performance of backfill is described in relation to crushed waste, dewatered tailings and deslimed tailings. These investigations confirmed that no single test could be used to define the overall stress-strain behaviour of a selected fill. Nevertheless, resulting from this work, a preliminary standard test procedure for uncemented backfill materials, com- prising a suite of tests in unconfined and confined compression, has been formulated. This test procedure is a significant advance towards a more meaningful evaluation of fill materials. Test results will also provide numerical information for input use in computer programs for the design of mine layouts incorporating backfill.

"The consolidation of nano-sized composite materials presents a challenge using conventional hot pressing methods. Spark plasma sintering (SPS) technology has shown great promise in the successful sintering of nanoreinforced composite materials. This qualitative review seeks to impart knowledge gathered, and progress made over the years on the consolidation of nanocomposite materials using SPS technology. The review is aimed at introducing this technology to the South African science and engineering community. Emphasis is on improving the mechanical properties of structural ceramic nanocomposite materials, which over the years have shown great promise in a wide range of applications, including transport, energy, mining, and the environment. Although success has been achieved within the laboratory for research purposes, there are still great opportunities to commercialize the technology for the production of larger components with more complex shapes.IntroductionSince the pioneering work of Niihara and Nakahira (1991) over a decade ago there have been extensive attempts to harness the potential of nanostructural metals, ceramics, and composites in a number of applications (Niihara and Nakahira, 1991; Selaho et al., 1997; Sekino and Niihara, 1995; Khalil, 2012; Aalund, 2008). It is generally realized that reducing the grain size of materials to nanoscale offers a significant improvement in properties. Attempts to synthesize nanostructured compacts by conventional sintering methods have not succeeded owing to the uncontrollable high rates of grain growth driven by long dwelling times at the sintering temperatures and large powder surface areas (Sergueeva et al., 2009; Gua, Khora, and Chieng, 2004; Tang et al., 2009). Following the development of spark plasma sintering (SPS) technology, it is now possible to process nanocrystalline materials with controlled grain growth. The new mineral royalty regime for South Africa was signed into law in November 2008, with its main objective being to compensate the State for the depletion of public minerals through a royalty charge payable from 1 March 2010. The aims of this paper are to establish the potential impact of mining royalties on State revenues, industry affordability, and explore whether the dual formula system is likely to encourage miners to become refiners. It also measures the royalty dispensation against economists? tax standards in an attempt to make a judgement on the ?equity? of the new system. This paper argues that most stakeholders should be comfortable with most of the requirements of the Act for most of the time. However, the new regime is unlikely to motivate miners to become refiners, as the benefit of the reduced rate on refined minerals appears to be insufficient to justify the additional costs to refine the mineral resource to the prescribed states of beneficiation.

In the field of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis catalysts, cobalt, platinum, and aluminium are the primary metal constituents of the conventionally used cobalt catalyst. While platinum recovery remains a focal point in this field, a recent endeavour by a South African company emerged, which aimed to recover cobalt and aluminium from spent Fischer-Tropsch synthesis catalysts for potential use in the agricultural sector. This study aimed to optimally separate cobalt and aluminium from spent Fischer-Tropsch synthesis catalyst for this purpose. It further leverages the OLI database to predict metal speciation during solvent extraction to aid with experimental planning. Shake-out tests were conducted to determine optimal separation. conditions, which were validated using three distinct methods: (i) evaluating the experimental error, (ii) comparing results with similar research, and (iii) validating results against the OLI database. The investigation revealed the pivotal role of the aqueous pH yielding effective separation at pH 3.13 ([H2SO4] = 2.5 × 10−4 M) when using 20 vol.% CYANEX 272 and 50 mol.% pre-neutralisation. Effective cobalt scrubbing was achieved with 50 g/L Al at pH 2.8, while successful stripping required 1 M H2SO4. Competitive interactions between complexing aluminium and cobalt species were observed when contacting with CYANEX 272 at a pH < 4. Equipment design analysis for a targeted separation efficiency of 87% dictated the necessity of two mixer stages and a settler measuring 1.5 m × 1.5 m × 6.0 m (height × width × length). This settler would ensure sufficient residence time for gravity separation at a flow rate of 10 m3/h.

Before giving the company permission to discharge neutralized mine drainage containing 1800 mg/l of dissolved solids into a public stream, my Department had to consider the matter from both the legal and the practical viewpoint.
