The Precious Metals Section is concerned primarily with ore-testing problems associated with precious metals and with the analysis and concentration of a large number of the strategic-mineral samples that have been included in the research program of the Bureau of Mines. During the fiscal year 1938-39, 30 projects were completed. The requests for this service are based upon the desire f the sponsor to obtain the best or most satisfactory method for maximum recovery of the minerals. In many instances it is a question of improving present milling practice, with due regard to utilization of present equipment. In others, the probable tonnage available maybe the deciding factor in the choice of a particular recovery method. Under all circumstances the results of tests axe prepared with the thought of aiding a competent metallurgist, familiar with local conditions, to formulate a practical flow sheet or to assist the mill operator to correct known losses. A microscopic examination for identification of the mineral constituents and their association in each ore is always a big help, in planning the tests and may indicate the reason for former troubles or assist with best procedure.

Of the common causes of the larger mine accidents, such as falls of roof and coal, gas and dust explosions, mine fires, and the misuse of explosives, all of which are often closely related, each must be studied and fought in a manner peculiar to itself. The last mentioned, the misuse of black powder and other explosives, is sometimes considered the least important of these causes of mine accidents; but its impor- tance is much greater than the statistics indicate, for the reason that the misuse of explosives is the true cause of many of the fatal mine fires, gas or dust explosions, and falls of roof that are credited to other causes. Both the quantity of explosives used and the number of purposes to which they are applied are increasing. They are now made at about 150 plants, in different parts of the United States, and the product of a single year is estimated at nearly 500,000,000 pounds. Nothing in all this material is a safe or "safety" explosive when in the hands of a careless or ignorant person; and this is true whether considered in connection with the shipment or the use of these explosives. In addition to the large losses of life and property resulting from an improper use of explosives in mining, the recent statistics of the railway bureau for the safe transportation of explo- sives have shown more than 400 persons killed or injured and over $3,000,000 worth of property destroyed by explosives in transit by rail. The fact that three years of cooperative effort under the wise supervision of this bureau has reduced these losses to almost nothing encourages the hope that similar cooperative effort may likewise greatly lessen losses of life and property from the use of explosives in mining. The additions to the large death roll of our mines make a recurring appeal to the public for fair treatment of the coal-mining industry, and to the miner and the manager that they join in every possible effort for greater safety. It may never be possible under conditions such as exist to-day to prevent mine accidents entirely. Seven coal-related waste samples (mining, cleaning, and gasification) were characterized chemically and mineralogically. Laboratory extracts of each sample, using a variety of different extraction methods, were used in both acute and chronic bioassays. A coal slurry sample (coarse fraction) and two coal cleaning refuse samples were chemically and mineralogically similar, and generated acidic water-waste systems, both in the laboratory and in the field. Acidic laboratory extracts and field samples of acid mine drainage in the area where the solid samples were collected, tended to be in equilibrium with some type of CaSO4 phase and with maghemite. The chemical composition of the extracts was sensitive to the method used to generate the extracts, but generally had the same prevalent chemical character as the field samples. The acidic wastes contain appreciable quantities of soluble Al, Mn, Ni, SO4, and Zn as indicated by both laboratory extraction and field data. Long-term extractions suggest that some constituents (Al, Fe, SO4) continued to be released by the acidic wastes after 22 weeks with no apparent associated change in pH. Two mine spoil samples, essentially shale, tended to generate water-waste systems that were neutral in pH and consequently released lower quantities tit potential pollutants than the acid wastes. The gasification residue was compositionally similar to coal-fired power plant slag and fly ash and generated moderately alkaline extracts with low concentration of soluble potentially toxic constituents. All of the solid wastes contained a variety of organic compounds, many of which are on the EPA Priority Pollutant List. However, these compounds were essentially insoluble in aqueous media. Each extract was tested for acute toxicity with tour species of freshwater aquatic organisms; green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus), fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas), a crustacean (Daphnia magna), and a snail (Physa anatina). The extracts of the two mine spoil samples and of the gasification residue were not toxic to any of the organisms while the extracts from the acidic refuse and slurry samples were acutely toxic to all of the organisms. For all cases, pH was significantly correlated to mortality while Al, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Zn were significantly correlated to mortality in specific instances. Data from 96-hour LC-50 determinations showed that dilutions up to 1:1000 were necessary to eliminate mortality. The most toxic extracts were those with the lowest pH which necessitated the largest amounts of dilution to eliminate mortality. Chronic bioassays with the same test organisms were investigated with leachate samples from a relatively unweathered refuse sample and an older, more weathered refuse sample. The unweathered refuse sample generated a leachate that was acutely toxic while the leachate from the weathered refuse sample was not acutely toxic. No detrimental chronic effects were noted in organisms exposed to dilutions of the non-toxic leachate while low concentrations of the acutely toxic leachate produced lower hatchability for the Lepomis cyanellus and Pimephales promelas eggs, increased mortality with chronic exposure for Lepomis cyanellus, Daphnia, Physa, and reduced weight gain for Physa. Dilutions of a toxic, high-Fe leachate resulted in the precipitation of ferric hydroxide that was implicated as the major causative factor accounting for the physical and physiological toxic effects exhibited by all of the test organisms in these acutely sublethal concentrations. The toxicity of this leachate demonstrates the potential effects that these types of wastes can have on the aquatic ecosystem if they enter a receiving water in a natural setting.

This interpretation of the mining law of Australia was first compiled from the best information available in Washington; it was then sent to the American Consulate General , in Australia, where through the direction of Thomas H. Robinson , American consul in charge , it was submitted for criticism to the mining authorities in the various States of Australia , whose suggestions have been incorporated in this digest .

This report on the physical and chemical properties of crude oils of California is one of a series on the producing districts of the United States. It includes a short discussion of results, tabulated data, and individual analyses of California crudes. Analyses of crude oils from the fields of Fresno, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, and Ventura Counties have been published in Serials 25952 and 26083. The analyses reported in this paper corer samples that were obtained subsequent to the publication of Serials 2535 and 2608. The samples were obtained by members of the San Francisco office of the Bureau of Mines. The collecting of samples was facilitated by the courtesy of representatives of oil companies in California.

The Bureau of Mines developed cost estimates fur the disposal of phosphate rock washer slimes by pond settling, from a study of the method used at the International Minerals a Chemical Corp., Moralyn Phosphate Operations, Polk County, Fla. Data were obtained by basing phosphate production and slime generation statistics on plant capacity rather than on actual company records. Cost estimates, which were prepared as a guide in evaluating alternative disposal methods and in identifying needed areas of research, could be applicable to any Florida plant using the same disposal method. To conserve mineral resources and to improve environmental conditions, the Bureau recommends further research directed toward developing alternative methods of disposal, including the recovery of water and P205 values from the slimes.

The Bureau of Mines conducted one of the most extensive studies on surface mine illumination to date, to assess the illumination needs of mobile surface mining machinery with respect to the visual tasks required of machinery operators. Field Investigations were performed at 22 surface mining operations, coal and metal-nonmetal, within several mining regions of the United States. Visibility and illumination were measured for 159 visual tasks performed by equipment operators on or near 57 surface mining machines, including draglines, shovels, blasthole drills, bulldozers, loaders, haul trucks, graders, scrapers, and several service-type vehicles.

The combination of flotation and chemical processing methods presented in this report of the Bureau of Mines enabled treatment of typical low-grade ferberite ores from the Boulder County, Colo. area, to produce specification-grade synthetic scheelite. The overall recovery from ore to synthetic scheelite was 87 percent, based on a flotation recovery of 93 percent and a similar recovery in chemical processing. Preliminary mineral dressing studies revealed that the physical and mineralogical nature of typical ferberite ores precluded high recovery of tungsten in plus 60-percent-W03-grade products by these methods. Therefore, the flotation research was focused on attaining plus 90-percent recovery in a concentrate containing 10 percent W03. Detailed studies were made (1) to establish optimum grinding conditions for obtaining adequate mineral liberation, (2) to develop collecting and modifying reagent combinations that would enable controllable selective flotation, and (3) to define the influence of different pulp solids, temperature, pH, and time for conditioning and for the rougher and cleaner flotation stages.

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYThe tungsten properties of Lincoln Mines, Inc., and North Tem Flute Mining and Development Co. were first explored by the Bureau of Mines in 1942. Work on the project comprised trenching, sampling, a small amount of road and trail construction, and a small amount of core drilling. From April 13 to December 10, 1944, additional diamond drilling was done by the Bureau of Mines to test the lateral and downward extensions of the various tactite zones along the contact south of the Lincoln mine, including the property of the North Tem Piute Mining & Development Co.Claims leased by the Lincoln Mines, Inc., are in secs. 25 and 36, T. 3 S., R. 56 E.; secs. 30 and 31, T. 3 S., R. 57 E.: and sec. 1, T. 4 S., R 56 E., M. The property owners are continuing operations and are now engaged in building a 20-ton mill.The claims of the North Tern Flute Mining & Development Cc. are in sec. 1, T. 4 S., R. 56 E., M. D. B. & M. Merle F. Schofield is president of the company and maintains an office at Hike, Nev. These claims were leased by H. P. Laslett, of the Utah Nevada Mining Co., in 1945 and by the Atolia Mining Co. in 1946. The owners are now doing some exploratory work."

During 1990-1999, a total of 458 fires occurred in all coal mining categories; 157 of those fires caused 164 injuries and 2 fatalities. The greatest number of fues and fire injuries occurred at surface mines, whch also had the highest risk rate values. A total of 66 fuefighting interventions were required. Of these, there were 25 mine rescue team interventions in underground mines, including 5 mobile equipment firefighting interventions, and 41 fire brigade and fire department interventions at all surface operations, including 19 mobile equipment interventions. In all, 50 fires destroyed or heavily damaged equipment (including 16 pieces of mobile equipment) because of failure of other firefighting methods, late fire detection, undetected fires, or fire size. A total of 1 14 fires were detected late by smoke, and 42 fires were not detected.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a method for the computer solution of the equilibrium compositions of any complex, multiphase, chemical system for which appropriate thermodynamic data are available. The method describes in detail the computation of systems in which solid or liquid species can form by heterogeneous chemical reactions where these species do not occur in any equilibrium equations. Also described are the calculation of phases formed by condensation (pure or solutions) and the inclusion of other system restrictions such as electroneutrality. The method is being used to compute the equilibrium composition of mixtures of an electrically conductive plasma and a liquid slag phase arising from the high-temperature combustion of coal for magnetohydrodynamic power generation. These mixtures can contain up to 65 species including gases, liquids, free electrons, and ions.

The Sweetwater, Castro, Trinidad, New London, and Hilltop chromite properties are situated within an area 8 miles long and 1 mile wide between San Luis Obispo city and Morro Creek, San Luis Obiso County, Calif. Development work at this group of mines was a part of a long-range project by the Bureau of Mines to develop strategic mineral reserves in the United States in accordance with the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939. The junior author of this report participated in the preliminary examinations made in 1941 of the chromite deposits that later in the same year were the subject of more intensive investigation under the immediate supervision of the senior author. The ore occurs in lenses and kidneys in masses of dunite contained in large poridetite areas. Production has boon in the form of lump ore and concentrates from disseminated ore. Work by the Bureau of Miner included surveying, mapping, trenching, sampling, and assaying. It is summarized separately in the text under the name of each mine investigated. The report gives a brief history of the district, describer the concentrating plant of the Castro Associates, and gives detailed results on sampling and assays at the various proportion.

The widespread adoption during the past decade of the dense-medium process for cleaning coal increases the need for technologic studies of the process. Such studies provide information that will insure maximum usefulness of this process in its present form and may well lead to substantial improvements in design and opera¬tion. The Bureau of Mines has published the results of cleaning trials on a wide variety of coals in two dense-medium pilot plants5/ and reported the recovery of coal from waste by dense-medium treatment.6./ The present report deals with the viscosity of magnetite dense medium, an important subject about which virtually nothing has been published. Specifically, the report concerns methods for measuring viscosity, the influence of various medium contaminants on viscosity, the effect of viscosity on cleaning results, and the influence of viscosity on consumption of medium. Cleaning trials on four coals of varied density composition in a pilot plant, using mediums of different viscosities, showed a steady reduction in cleaning efficiency with increasing viscosity in every instance. However, the behavior of each coal in a viscous medium was distinctly individual. With one, an increase of only 1 centipoise in viscosity caused a reduction in recovery efficiency of 7.7 percent, whereas the same increase in viscosity with another reduced recovery efficiency only 2.7 percent.

"The generation of free radicals from reactions of nickel (Il)-thiol complexes with molecular oxygen and model lipid hydroperoxides was investigated by electron spin resonance (ESR) utilizing 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO) as a spin trap. Incubation of nickel (II) [Ni(II)) with cysteine in an aerobic environment generated hydroxyl (·OH) radical, which then reacted with cysteine to generate a carbon-centered alkyl ( · R) radical. Radical generation was inhibited under a nitrogen atmosphere. Model lipid hydroperoxides, cumene hydroperoxide, and I-butyl hydroperoxide enhanced the yield of these radicals and also generated an alkoxyl (·OR) radical. Radical yield decreased by approximately half under a nitrogen atmosphere. Although histidine did not cause radical formation in the reaction between Ni(II) and cumene hydroperoxide under aerobic conditions, the addition of histidine to a mixture containing Ni(ll), cysteine, and cumene hydroperoxide under the same experimental conditions increased the yield of · R radical but lowered the yield of ·OR and ·OH radical adducts. It thus appears that histidine caused the ·OH attack to be more site-specific. Similar results were obtained utilizing 1-butyl hydroperoxide. Penicillamine or N-acetylcysteine yielded similar results except that under aerobic conditions, reaction between Ni(ll) and N-acetylcysteine without hydroperoxide did not generate a significant concentration of free radicals. Under the same experimental conditions, cystine did not generate any detectable free radicals, suggesting an important role of the -SH group in Ni(II)-mediated free radical generation. The results indicate that free radical generation from the reaction of Ni(Il)-thiol complexes and molecular oxygen, and/or lipid hydroperoxides, may play an important role in the mechanism(s) of Ni(II) toxicity and carcinogenesis. INTRODUCTIONWhile nickel is a well-recognized carcinogen [l, 2]. the underlying biochemical mechanisms remain unclear (3, 4). Recent studies suggest that these mechanisms may involve oxidative DNA damage through free radicals, especially the hydroxyl (•OH) radical [5-13]. The mechanisms of nickel carcinogenicity and toxicity may also involve lipid peroxidation [14-21]. Unlike ferrous ion [Fe(II)], the Ni(II) cation itself does not directly react with 02, H2O2, or lipid hydroperoxides to generate free radicals [12, 21]. However, it has been reported that Ni(II) complexes with certain synthetic oligopeptides, e.g., tetraglycine or glycylglycylhistidine, make Ni(II) reactive with 02. This reaction results in transitory formation of Ni(III) and degradation of the organic ligand via free radical reactions [22]. Such Ni(II)-peptide complexes are also capable of reacting with H2O2 to produce oxygen free radicals [11, 12]. Although the cellular environ¬ment may not contain these particular peptide ligands that are known to render Ni(II) redox active in vitro, it does contain a variety of oligopeptides that are capable of forming Ni(II) complexes at physiological pH, and thus may facilitate Ni(II) redox activity in vivo. These oligopeptides include glutathione (y-L glutamylycysteinylglycine), carnosine (homocarnosine (y aminobutyryl-L-histidine), and anserine ( B-alany1-3-methyl-L-histidine)."

The Bureau of fines has tested a portable microseismic processor recorder at the Galena Mine, Wallace, ID, both in an environmentally controlled enclosure and, with minimal protection, in a working area of the mine. In both trials the device demonstrated effective and reliable data acquisition capabilities.

A modified transpiration apparatus was devised by the Bureau of Mines to permit rapid and accurate measure of the vapor transport and vapor diffusion coefficients of antimony sulfide (Sb2S3) and other compounds at temperatures to 1,045 K. The apparatus was equipped with dual condensers and valves to switch the flow of vapor in a fraction of a second from one condenser to the other, thus allowing short-interval sampling under equilibrium conditions. Reliability of the technique was established by measuring the vapor pressure of ZnC12 as a function of temperature and comparing the results with published data. As part of an investigation of the vapor concentrations and species of accessory element sulfides associated with copper and zinc smelting, the apparatus was used to measure the rate of vapor transport and diffusion coefficients of vapor over liquid Sb2S3 as a function of temperature between 870 and 1,045 K. The calculated vapor density was combined with published direct measurements of vapor pressure to calculate the average molecular weight of the gaseous species. Average molecular weight of the vapor in equilibrium with Sb2S3 ranged from 286 to 112 g/mol over the temperature range studied.

Nonoxide ceramics with improved high-temperature properties could substitute for high-temperature alloys and reduce toe Nation's dependence on imports of Cr, Co, Ni, and Mn. To meet this objective, the Bureau of Mines conducted research to synthesize u1trafine reactive boron nitride (BN) powders BN powders were prepared at temperatures ranging from -75? to 750? C. Low-temperature reactions (-75? to 200? C) between boron halides and N compounds led to formation of e1emento-organic compounds that were thermally decomposed to u1trafine (approximately 100-to 150-A particle size) reactive BN powders. BN powders were also prepared through the reaction of a 10w-me1tinginorganic B compound (boric acid, borax) with an organic N compound (carbimide and thiocarbimide) in N2 and/or ammonia (NH3) atmospheres at temperatures between 500? and 750? C.

"INTRODUCTION The Powhatan mine of the Franklin Coal Mining Co. is located in the western part of Jefferson County, Ala., on the Louisville and Nashville Railroad, 40 miles west of Birmingham. The Mary Lee bed at this point yields coal with fair coking qualities, but with an ash content as mined so high as to prohibit its use in the production of metallurgical coke. At present the entire output of the mine is washed in single-compartment jigs and marketed as locomotive and domestic fuel.Figure 1 gives a typical seam section of the Mary Lee bed at the Powhatan mine. This section shows that the bed is divided by rock partings into three benches. In many parts of the mine, particularly in the older workings the roof rock is so weak that it can not be held without excessive timbering. This condition has restricted the operation in many parts of the mins to the middle and bottom benches of coal. The 6 inches of draw rock between the top and middle benches is very strong and makes an excellent roof requiring only a normal amount of timbering to support it. In the newer workings of the mine the character of the rock above the top bench is strong and it is believed that in the future it will be possible to work all three benches. This study was undertaken for the purpose of determining the washing characteristics of the Mary Lee bed at Powhatan and the effect on these characteris-tics of including or omitting the coal from the top bench. It was also the purpose of the study to show whether it would be possible to produce a washed product sufficiently low in ash to be used for the manufacture of metallurgical coke. This paper is one of a series of reports on the washability of Alabama coals which is being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and tin University of Alabama. With the cooperation of the coal producers of Alabama. It contains the results of screen sizing and float-and-sink tests of representative samples of run-of-mine coal, and the results of table tests on the minus 3/16-inch sizes of the raw coal."

Two different techniques were used to make measurements of the absolute value of electromagnetic noise in an operating coal mine, Robena No. 4, located near Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. One technique measures noise over the entire electromagnetic spectrum of interest for brief tine periods. With present instrumentation, the spectrum can be covered from 40 Hz to 400 kHz. It is recorded using broad-band analog magnetic tape, and the noise data are later transformed to give spectral plots. The other technique records noise envelopes at several discrete frequencies for a sufficient amount of tine to provide amplitude probability distributions. The specific measured results are given in a number of spectral plots and amplitude probability distribution plots. The general results are that at frequencies below 10 kHz, power line noise within the mine is severe. Impulsive noise is severe near arcing trolleys, and at lower frequencies near any transmission line. Carrier trolley phone signals and harmonics are strong throughout the mine whenever the trolley phone is in operation. Additional information beyond that included in this report may be obtained from the authors, who are with the Electromagnetics Division of the National Bureau of Standards.

Wood cribs are used extensively by the mining industry to stabilize mine openings. While the cost per crib is relatively low, their extensive use can result in annual mine costs of over $1 million. In an effort to improve the utilization of these supports and to reduce ground control hazards, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed engineering methods to assist mine operators in wood-crib design and employment. Design and employment criteria are established based on the strength, stiffness, and stability of the crib structure in relation to the load conditions imposed by the mine environment. Models have been developed based on full-scale tests in the USBM's Mine Roof Simulator that compute the capacity of wood cribs of various configurations and material constructions as a function of displacement of the crib structure due to roof-and-floor convergence. These models permit the comparison of the loading characteristics and costs of employment of different crib designs, and in conjunction with roof behavior models, provide a means to determine the optimum design and employment strategy.
