The Bureau of Mines investigated ground support problems in four major block-cave mines to assess the current "state-of-the-art" and to delineate areas for future research. The most significant problem is the inability of present support systems to hold moving ground. Further, as mining progresses to greater depth, this problem becomes more serious. Providing adequate temporary support capable of withstanding primary and secondary blasting is the next most significant problem. A detailed analysis of the effect of mining methods on support problems is also recommended for future research.

[This investigation of the refractory properties of seven Pacific Northwest chrome ores and concentrates has shown that five of the ores and one of the concentrates are suitable for making refractories and that all may be used in combination with high-grade chromite. The specific objectives of the investigation were to determine the inherent physic al and chemical characteristics, to shapes using each of the chrome ores and concentrates, to compare the refractory qualities of the laboratory-prepared with commercial chrome refractories. The Salt Flat field, formerly called the Toe -Bruner field, is located northeast of the town of Luling in Caldwell County, Tex. This field, which is a fault structure, approximately parallels and is about 5 miles east of the Old Luling field. The proved area is approximately 1,280 acres, on which 332 producing wells (September, 1930) have been drilled. The majority of the wells are producing from the Edwards limestone at an average total depth of 2,700 feet. A few wells are producing from the Austin chalk or from other formations above the Edwards limestone. The Wilcox formation is exposed, and the fault trace in places is scarcely evident. The strike of the structure is approximately 111. 20 to 45° E. The displacement of the fault is probably 200 to 500 feet. The discovery well was completed in the Austin chalk by the Lutex Oil Co. during April, 1928. In October, 1928, the Sun Oil Co. completed the discovery well in the Edwards pay. This well was an important discovery, as it indicated the potential oil possibilities of the Edwards limestone in echelon fault structures. The discovery led to the development of the third fault field in the Edwards limestone and opened up a large area for future prospecting. The total oil production for the Salt Flat field to and including September, 1930, was 19,833,215 barrels. The most reliable figures available of water production were compiled for a number of leases and wells in the south half of the field. These data show that the water percentage for the average well in this part of the field increased steadily from 30 per cent for January, 1929, to 81 per cent for December, 1929. The estimated daily water production of the entire field for December, 1929, was about 82,000 barrels as compared with a daily oil production of 29,725 barrels; or approximately 2.7 barrels of water were produced with each barrel of oil 14 months after the discovery well was completed in the Edwards pay. Estimates of water production in the (Old) Luling field, which is near the Salt Flat field, place the daily water production at about 150,000 barrels (July, 1929) as compared with a daily oil production of 11,000 barrels. These figures indicate that in the Luling field approximately 14 barrels of water must be lifted for each barrel of oil produced. The Luling field was discovered in August, 1922, and a peak annual production of 10,210,000 barrels was reached during 1924. The production during 1928 was 5,057,000 barrels of oil from an average of 567 producing wells for the year. Although water appeared early in the life of the Luling field, the oil production has been well sustained. Another feature of outstanding interest is the comparatively few producing wells that have been abandoned on account of water during the soven years of operation of this field. Comparison of data between the Luling and Salt Flat fields is of importance because of the nearness of the two fields. The Luling field is a narrow strip or "shoestring" approximately 8 miles long, with a maximum width of 3,400 feet. Production is obtained in the Edwards limestone at an average depth of 2,200 feet on the upthrow side of a fault. Similar conditions of accumulation are found in the Salt Flat field at greater depth to Salt Flat field as outlined (April, 1930) is about 7 miles long? with a maximum width of 2,000 feet. At the time the field work was begun (July, 1929) in the Salt Flat field, drilling operations had been almost completed in the south half of the field, while the north half was still under development. Cross sections and a structure contour map interpret the subsurface conditions in the south half of the field, where the water conditions first became serious.

Thallium is one of the rare and relatively neglected elements that has recently assumed conspicuous importance. This element is widely distributed in nature but occurs in such minute quantities in most rocks and minerals that its recovery at present is only commercially feasible as a byproduct of other industries. World War II, with its unprecedented demand for products having special or unusual properties, led to a study of a number of the rarer elements that previously had been given comparatively little attention for one or more of the following reasons: 1. 2. Limited knowledge of properties. Small quantitios present in available raw materials. 3. High cost of concentration and recovery. Some of those rare elements, either alone or in the form of compounds, have already proved of such value for certain military and industrial purposes that their extraction from ores and waste products, oven at high cost, is fully justified. On the othor hand, further investigation of their character- istics, discovery of more adequato sources, and improvement in methods of con- centration and recovery would greatly broaden their field of usefulness and establish new and expanded industries. The current market for some of these elements exceeds the available supply. One of the functions of the Bureau of Mines is to study the properties of such elements in greater detail, locate the most promising raw materials from which they can be derived, and work out methods of extraction that will render the recovery of such elements more economical. The purpose of a serios of information circulars on the raror elements is to present in condensed form the facts and data so far available. This information may serve as a basis in planning more complete investigations loading to a full utilization of such elements.

Tables of 28 positions for all the transitions for nine common analyzing crystals for first, second, and third order reflections were compiled by the Bureau of Mines to facilitate elemental X-ray fluorescence analysis on multi-element systems. The tables are based on a compatible set of wavelengths for 2,346 observed X-ray transitions of the elements lithium to americium. The results are tabulated in order of increasing wavelength as well as by increasing wavelength for each element.

No mines are active in the Hunter Mountain Wilderness Study Area (WSA), and no mineral resources have been identified in the WSA. However, the Monarch Mine has low potential for silver, copper, tungsten, and gold resources in quartz veins; the Shirley Ann Group and Sal Group have moderate and low potential, respectively, for silver, lead, and copper resources in skarn; claims overlying the Eureka Quartzite have low potential for silica resources; and the Tourmaline N1-4 Prospect has low potential for tourmaline resources in quartz monzonite. Copper, lead, silver, tungsten, molybdenum, wollastonite and garnet occur in skarn zones between monzonitic and carbonate units. Silver, tungsten, and copper also occur in quartz veins within monzonite. Known metallic mineral deposits are small, erratic and discontinuous. The J. 0. Mine, adjacent to the northeast corner of the WSA, may contain as much as 26 million tons of subeconomic wollastonite resources. The crest of an open pit to produce that resource would extend into the WSA. No information exists on geothermal potential because no exploration has been done in the area. No occurrences of energy minerals are known within the WSA.

From July 1, 1949, to July 1, 1950, the Bureau of Mines conducted the research and technologic work on coal and coal products that is summarized in this report. The research, described in this fifteenth of a series of resumes, is presented in more detail in publications (see footnote references) that appeared during the fiscal year, though in some cases research data are given that have not been published elsewhere. Results of research in the experimental coal mine, on explosives, and on gas and dust explosions will be found in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 4228, Annual Report of Research and Technologic Work on Explosives, Explosions, and Flames, Fiscal Year 1950. An over-all view of our coal, oil, end natural-gas reserves was presented, and the future possibilities for the, production of synthetic liquid fuels from coal were delineated.3/

Content addresses advantages/disadvantages of control techniques, design and operating specifications, and implementation and maintenance guidelines. An indexed list of selected references is also included. In addition to the completed manual, this report documents work performed in the course of its preparation.

In this report, the application of the Open Pit Materials Handling Simulator (OPMHS) to a Southwestern surface mine using draglines and front-end loaders is described. The specific objective of the study is to demonstrate the application of the simulator to analyze mine planning and to analyze alternatives for increased production. The simulator was verified by comparing long term production figures to the simulated results from data collected on a mine visit. A short term and a long term alternative are studied with projected productivities and scheduling. No economic analysis of these proposals were performed.

"INTRODUCTION AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTSAt the request of the lessees, the Pearl tract was examined in February 1946, by Otto Ruhl, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines. From the evidence of old drill logs and from the few available records of mining operations on the Pearl and the adjoining Trussel (Big Tom) tract, it appeared that a relatively small churn-drilling program might develop enough lead-since ore to justify resumption of mining. In March 1946, funds were allotted for churn drilling, and the work was begun the following month. Ten holes totaling 1,933 feet were completed before the close of the project in August 1946. The work was under the general supervision of C. H. Johnson, chief, Rolla Division, Mining Branch, and under the direct supervision of the Bureau project engineers. 3/In its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to our national security and economy, It is the,of the Bureau to publish the facts development by each project as soon as possible after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, makes preliminary examinations and conducts investigation of mineral deposits. The Metallurgical Branch, O. C. Ralston, chief, participates in this program by making beneficiation tests and analyses. In the present project, no metallurgical tests were made, and for the sake of speed the samples taken were analyzed by a local commercial assayer. 4/"

Multiple branch wellbores and horizontal holes, when applied to deep lying ore bodies, have the potential of significantly reducing well costs by reducing total footage drilled per acre of well pattern. In addition, horizontal holes may increase sweep efficiency. Well completion is a major problem. They must be cased to contain leaching solutions within the underground portion of the production loop. Several drilling and completion concepts are given and evaluated in the report. Our evaluation shows that there is economic incentive to further develop these concepts for field application to ore bodies 1,500 feet. Multiple branch concepts are the most attractive. They can reduce well costs by as much as 30° when applied to 2,000 feet ore body depths (44%, at 5,000 feet) and can accommodate a lamer pump than conventional vertical wells. We recommend this concept be developed further to accommodate either dual or triple branches.

The present and projected outlook for rhenium relative to its distribution and occurrences, the recovery factors involved in ore beneficiation, capital and operating costs, changing technology, and the projected uses and market growth of rhenium are presented in this report as part of the Bureau of Mines program to determine the availability of recoverable rhenium in a developing market.

This Bureau of Mines publication presents short-range projections of domestic liquid hydrocarbon production through 1980. Appraisal of future crude oil production was made by evaluating the relationship between primary and enhanced oil recovery and the total crude oil producing trends in each of the oil-producing areas of the United States. Future natural gas liquid production was generally estimated by projecting historical production. Estimates of production were prepared for each of the oil producing areas and summarized for the Petroleum Administration for Defense (PAD) districts and total United States. From 1975 to 1980, crude oil production for the conterminous United States is expected to decline from 7.8 to 6.4 million barrels of oil per day (BOPD), and it is expected to increase from 8.0 to 8.2 million BOPD for the total United States. However, these estimates do not include additional production expected from the Elk Hills field in California and the Yates field in Texas. If included, 1980 production for the conterminous United States would be 6.7 million BOPD and 8.4 million BOPD for the total United States.

A small electronic digital computer employing punched cards has been used to facilitate the solution of a variety of problems in Bureau of Mines pyrometallurgical research. In this work the computer has been found to be economical for solving both simple problems that occur repeatedly and those involving complex or iterative calculations. Each of these classes of problems and their respective solutions are described. These small computers can be used effectively by researchers when they work in consultation with a computer specialist. Close team work produces the required solutions in less time, and, oftentimes, in a more useful form. Participation in programming by researchers develops in them a skill for evaluating the suitability of problems for electronic computing.

This report presents the geometric parameters (attitude, spacing, extent, and aperture) of fracture patterns in a selected portion (study area) of San Manuel copper mine, Arizona. The geometric parameters are quantified for input to structural analyses for studies of the influence of fractures on cavability of ores. Using an orientation analysis procedure developed earlier by the Bureau, three prominent and nearly orthogonal sets of fracture orientations were delineated in the study area. Sets 1 and 2 dip nearly vertically, and generally strike east-west and north-south, respectively, whereas set 3 is nearly horizontal. Both a horizontal rotation (of 14° to 26° for sets 1 and 2, respectively) and a tilt (of 20° for set 3) is shown to occur between the 1415 and 2015 levels of the mine. Gomparison of the three major rock types present in the study area (quartz monzonite, monzonite porphyry, and rhyolite) show that the rhyolite is characterized by short extent, small spacing, and tightness of fractures as well as the general absence of fracture set 3, which may account for its generally observed strong resistance to caving.

"The El Dorado copper mine is situated in the foothill copper-zinc belt of California, which traverses the western slope of the Sierra Nevada with unusual persistence from Butte County to Kern County, a distance of more than 300 miles. Although this area contains such important past producers as the Penn mine, Union, and others, a great part of the current production has been derived from smaller properties, which depend largely on premium metal prices for economical operation. The El Dorado mine is in the latter group, which constitutes an important source of metal in a national emergency.Exploration by the Bureau of Mines by means of eight diamond-drill holes Indicated narrow, intermittent lenses of copper ore along structures boo feet in length. The copper occurs in massive sulfides composed of chalcopyrite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, and minor quantities of bernite. The sulfides have evidently replaced tuffs, which are interbedded with the Mariposa slates and shales.H. A. Weiler and Hal T. Hall, owners of the El Dorado copper property, requested an examination by the Bureau during the latter part of 1914. In December of that year an engineer of the Bureau of Mines visited the mine and recommended the project work undertaken. The purpose was to aid the owners in bringing the property into production of copper and zinc, which at that time was critically essential to the war industries.Complete factual data obtained by the exploration are embodied in this report.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G, Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director.Acknowledgment is made to A. O. One by one new metals come to share the burden of modern industry. Long before the Christian era potters and glass workers employed fine and costly blue pigments that contained cobalt. Cobalt blue class has been found in the tombs of the Egyptians and in the ruins of Troy, and many of the colors used by the ancient Greeks and Romans contained cobalt. The ancients, however, were apparently unaware that the colors they used were caused by cobalt, and it was not until late in the 17th century that the existence of the element was recognized, Writers in the Middle Ages referred to "cobalos" as an evil spirit that haunted mines and caused trouble to the miners. Subsequently the German worms "Kobold," meaning goblin, came to be applied to any baffling mineral and particularly to minerals that resembled ores but failed to yield metal when smelted. Even to-day there is something of an air of mystery about cobalt, and a medieval cloak of secrecy still surrounds many of the metallurgical processes employed in its production. "Zaffre" was mentioned about the middle of the sixteenth century by Biringuccio, and in 1735 the metal war, first prepared by G. Brandt. To preparation of cobalt compounds, however, must have been carried on in at least a small way ever since the opening of the silver-cobalt deposits of Schneeberg in 1470. By 1790 there were 25 works engaged in the industry, rust of them located in Saxony, but the total output of these works probably did not exceed 300 tone of cobalt annually, mostly in the fore of smalt. The smalt which contained approximately 6 per cent cobalt was sold in Venice in 1520 at about 16 cents a pound. A few refineries in Holland supplied the Irish linen trade, contributed a farce amount to the Dutch linen industries, and alto provided smaller quantities for the manufactuer of litmus in Holland. 1. The investigation shows that the bed identified as Wilder in this report is the only bed in Overton County that has produced commercial coal and is the only bed in which coal reserves were estimated for this report. Three other coal horizons were recognized but lacked enough data for reserve estimates. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves of coal, based on a minimum bed thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 19 million short tons, as of January 1, 1953. Of this total, 10 million tons represents coal 28 inches and more thick. Areas of the Wilder bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics were too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

When a flat-lying mineral deposit such as a coal seam is mined, some coal is left to separate the roof and floor so that miners and machines can safely mine the seam. The mineral left is in the form of mine pillars. If too much is taken, support problems and unsafe working conditions result. If too little is taken, the mining operation will be unable to compete economically with other mines. Therefore, one must select pillars of the optimal size to maximize mining recovery and minimize risk to miners and equipment. Later, if the pillar support is no longer needed and the surface can be allowed to subside the thickness of the coal seam, then the pillar support can be removed to increase mining recovery, and initial pillar size is not as critical. Only a small part of the information available on pillar design can be presented here. The purpose of this report is to summarize some of the work done by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and others on pillar design, which is reported in the literature from 1833 to the present, and present rock mechanics test results that aid in understanding mine pillar behavior. The variable names used are those of the authors cited. This results in multiple use of some variable names.
