A statistical technique, useful to analyze assay and other data characterized by location in three dimensions, is described in this Bureau of Mines report. If present, trends in the data are defined for the purposes of improving ore estimation, predicting ore beyond existing workings, and aiding geological interpretation. The technique is to fit linear and quadratic polynomial equations to the data through the statistical method of regression analysis. The fitted linear equations have the geometric form of hyperplanes; the fitted quadratic equations have the geometric form of ellipsoids or elliptic hyperboloids of one or two sheets. To visualize these three-dimensional forms, contour maps of a series of plane sections through the fitted surfaces are plotted. Both the fitting of the polynomial equations and the plotting of the con-tour maps are done by electronic computer to facilitate calculations and to obtain accurate results. Computer programs are described in appendixes. Methods employed are illustrated by an example analysis) based on data from a part of the Fresnillo mine) Zacatecas, Mexico.

This paper is one of a series dealing with mining methods and costs, prepared and published under the sponsorship of the United States Bureau of Mines and made possible through the cooperation f many mining companies in the United States and foreign countries. The preparation of this paper follows a field study of top-slice mining during which the author visited and discussed with operating officials a large number of iron mines in the Lake Superior region. During this study special note was made of changes in top-slicing practice during the past decade, prior to which the author had acquired several years experience with the method through active connection with a number of mines employing top slicing.

"INTRODUCTION In cooperation with the Boston Edison Co. and the Boston Consolidated Gas Co. of Boston, Mass., a survey has been conducted continuously since 1929 by the Bureau of Mines to determine the general hazards of combustible gases and vapors in manholes of the Boston Edison Co. The New England Telephone & Telegraph Co. also has cooperated in the investigation, and tests have been made in its manholes from May 1, 1933, to October 15, 1937. Yearly reports. 6/ on the results obtained since the beginning of the survey have been published.The methods and procedure of conducting the survey in 1937 were the same as heretofore."

The number of persons fatally injured in the California petroleum industry in 1932 was 24, a decrease of 6, or 20 percent from the number killed in 1931. The decrease in the number of fatalities occurring in 1932 caused the fatality curve of the California petroleum industry to reach its lowest point in 10 years. Changing conditions in the oil industry - reduced personnel, decreased active field development, and curtailed production - have undoubtedly caused a part of this decrease, but continued accident-prevention efforts by the industry have also contributed to the reduction in the number of fatalities for 1932. The Bureau of Mines has analyzed and reported annually the fatalities in the California petroleum industry for a period of 10 years. Figure 1 shows the trend of fatal accidents during that period. Fatality statistics for 1932 show that the drilling and producing, pipe line and transportation, and refining and natural gasoline divisions of the industry had fewer accidents in 1932 than in 1931, sales and marketing being the only division that showed an increase over 1931. The number of fatalities by divisions for 1931 and 1932, percent of total, and percentages of increase and decrease are given in Table 1.

Mine drainage and mine reclamation are topics of major interest to the mining industry, federal and local governments, and the general public. This publication and its companion three volumes are the proceedings of a conference held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, April 24-29, 1994. There were twelve sessions (69 papers) that dealt with mine drainage, including modeling, geochemistry, prediction, treatment, control strategies, characterization, hydrology, and case studies. These sessions comprise volumes 1 and 2. The six sessions (34 papers) that dealt with reclamation and revegetation of disturbed lands are included in volume 3. Volume 4 includes the six sessions (34 papers) that dealt with such topical issues as fires at abandoned mine sites, subsidence, hydrology, mine wastes, and policy. Poster session presentations are represented by 49 papers and 92 abstracts that have been placed in the back of volumes 2, 3, and 4, consistent with the subject of that volume.

Following the introduction of roof shields to the U.S. longwall mining scene in 1975, the number of shield faces (faces supported by shields) has increased steadily, and the occurrence of accidents associated with ground control inadequacies at longwall operations has shown a downward trend. However, ground control problems in longwall mining still exist. New mining systems, however efficient, have run afoul of roof control. Shield faces have suffered extended stoppages because of roof cavities. In this report, the Bureau of Mines addresses the problem of longwall roof control. The report presents a review of foreign remedial and strata replacement techniques for longwall faces and evaluates their potential for domestic application. The technology reviewed includes meshing, chemical rock stabilization, cribbing, strain-absorbent modules, inflatables, synthetic foam, and monolithic fills.

Methane emissions from the active face areas and from the fractured formations overlying the mined coalbed can affect safety and productivity in longwall mines. Since ventilation alone may not be sufficient to control the methane levels on a longwall operation, gob vent boreholes (GVB), horizontal and vertical drainage boreholes, and their combinations are drilled and used as supplementary methane control measures in many mines. However, in most cases, the types of degasification wellbores chosen are decided based on previous experiences without analyzing the different factors that may affect this decision. This study describes the development of an expert classification system used as a decision tool. It was built using a multilayer perceptron (MLP) type artificial neural network (ANN) structure. The ANN was trained using different geographical locations, longwall operation parameters, and coalbed characteristics as input and was tested to classify the output into four different selections, which are actual degasification designs that US longwall mines utilize. The ANN network selected no degasification, GVB, horizontal and GVB, and horizontal, vertical and GVB options with high accuracy. The results suggest that the model can be used as a decision tool for degasification system selection using site- and mine-specific conditions. Such a model can also be used as a screening tool to decide which degasification design should be investigated in detail with more complex numerical techniques.

"INTRODUCTION AND RESUMEThe Reward zinc property was one of the first selected for exploration by the Bureau of Mines at time when zinc supplies for war production were very short. Preliminary examination indicated that an appreciable tonnage of zinc that could be developed for early production might be found by diamond drilling. The geology was mapped by the Federal Geological Survey, and 14 holes were diamond drilled by the Bureau of Mines. This work was started in September 1942 and completed in September 1943.The Reward is an old property in southwestern Pinal County, 26 miles from Casa Grande on the Southern Pacific Railroad. Mining was begun in the early 1880's and was continued intermittently by several operators to about 1917. About 400,0oo pounds of copper was produced from the north¬eastern part of the property, mainly from a 600-foot incline in oxidized copper ore that replaced a bed of limestone. This ore was mined out. A 400-foot vertical shaft in the copper area was inaccessible. A 325-foot vertical shaft had been sunk near the southwest end of the zinc-bearing area, and a 600-foot crosscut tunnel had been driven near the northeast end of the zinc area, but little zinc ore was produced. There were several shallow inclines and numerous surface pits between the main workings.The ores were deposited in Paleozaic limestones that strike northeast and dip about 40 degrees northwest. These are capped by Cretaceous clastic and volcanic rocks in the zinc area. The outcrops show mineralization in a segment of the limestone 4,500 feet long, which is limited by large cross faults at each end. Another large fault, which strikes north, separates the northeast third of the mineralized belt from the remainder. Copper predominates northeast of this fault and zinc southwest of it. The ore beds are cut by numerous small cross faults. Ore was deposited for short distances along some of these, but more of it made out from the fissures along certain replaceable limestone beds."

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 419 natural gas samples from 22 States collected during calendar year 1964 as part of a continuous survey of the United States for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863/ and 576.4/ Six previous publications have been made to present the results of 6,293 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Mines, Helium Activity, prior to 1964. This report describes a statistical analysis of 41,502 respirable quartz dust samples collected from 1974 through 1981 in metal and nonmetal mines and mills. The goal of this Bureau of Mines study was to identify commodities and occupations associated with high quartz dust exposure so that future enforcement and research activity can be focused on the high-exposure areas. For this analysis, the Bureau used its computerized Mine Inspection Data Analysis System (MIDAS), which contains data on nearly 350,000 air samples, including data for 61 contaminants in 45 commodities. The samples analyzed were collected by inspectors of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MS HA). The data were entered into the MIDAS computer and coded according to commodity, occupation, location, and other categorical information. Occupations an. commodities with high quartz dust exposure were identified by grouping the data by code categories. Workers at sandstone, clay and shale, and miscellaneous nonmetallic mineral mills had the highest quartz dust exposures. Within these mills, occupations with high exposures were baggers, general laborers, and persons involved in crushing, grinding, and sizing operations. Dust concentrations in these mills were not necessarily the highest, but because the dust contained a high percentage of quartz, the health risk from dust exposure was the greatest.

[Utilization of small stone is recognized as one of the important problems of the lime industry. The term ?small stone' is used to designate material that is too small for calcination in tie shaft kilo. The maximum dimension A such stone rosy be placed at four inches. The introduction of any considerable quantity of stone having demensions lee: than this into the charge of a kiln impedes the draft and readers successful operation of the kiln difficult on impossible. Attempts design a shaft kiln which would calcine stall stone satisfactorily have not been successful to date. Thousands of tons of this small stone arc produced daily, and while part of it finds a market, for it has many uses, the profit is usually small an competition is teen and prices are low. Production of the material is, however, so greatly in excess of market that surplus of hundreds or possibly thousands of Jose axe place daily in stock piles and classified as waste. in a few instances a fortunate combination of circumstances, such as a program of or other work requiring large quantities of concrete aggregate, may mate it possible some quarries to market this stone later at a profit, teat in general the chances A profitable utilization are slight, and the quarry operator has the expense of handling this waste stone and providing a storage site for it. The brittle nature of limestone makes it impossible to quarry the stone and crush, it to size suitable for the shaft kilns without producing an excess of undesirable fines. Elimination of fines by changes in quarrying or crushing practices cannot lee expected. On the contrary, the adoption of more modern methods of quarrying in recent years has increased the proportion of small material. The tendency is to blast the roan with large charges of explosives and crush it with mechanical crushers, which produces more fines than the older methods of careful blasting with small char yes and sledging the rock by hand.. We increasing use of underground mining of limestone has also increased the production of small stone, as blasting in the confined space of an underground stope shatters the rocs more completely than quarrying in the open. The use of the very friable limestones, such as the limestone of Florida for the manufacture of lime adds a new factor to the calcination of small stone. This report describes a research and development program sponsored by the United State s Bureau of Mines. The purpose of the program was to develop reusable explosion-proof bulkheads for a cross-cut emergency shelter, and to study the implementation of such bulk-heads, and the resulting shelters, as part of an emergency escape plan in a normal coal mining environment. The first part of this report reveals a number of significant conclusions regarding the application of emergency shelters. A study of the cause s of, and the conditions prevailing during a mine emergency indicate s that ideal placement of the shelter s would be midway along developing entries, and at the inter section of butt and main entries. The proper spacing of shelters is based on the travel capability of trapped miners, which is in turn dependent on the height of coal. The life of a given emergency shelter, based on an analysis of the above information, will be anywhere from 6 months to 10 years. Consequently, some shelters are regarded as "temporary?, while others "permanent?.

The coal fields of Montana are widely distributed through the plains region in the eastern and northern parts of the State, and the mountain regions in the central, southern, and southwestern parts of the State. SURFACE FEATURES The Fort Union region in eastern Montana is a broad plain of almost horizontal rocks, characterized by extensive "bad lands" along the larger streams and by red hills, benches, ridges, and buttes which represent shale and sandstone that have been fused by the burning of an underlying coal bed.

"The O'Jack Mining Co.'s zinc and lead deposits in Jasper County, Missouri, have been worked intermittently since the early nineties; production from these deposits was greatest during World War I and II - 4,668 tons of zinc and lead concentrates. The deposits are in a sink-hole structure in which intense deformation has taken place and in areas of disturbance in the sheet-ground horizon.While high-grade ore was being mined, the operators sank seven churn-drill holes for the purpose of extending reserves. They then asked the Bureau of Mines to explore the deposit with the object of developing a reserve of lower-grade ore that could be mined by open-pit methods. Twenty-two holes were sunk. The methods of drilling and sampling and the logs of the holes, as of those drilled by the operators, are given later in this report.INTRODUCTION AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mined has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts development by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Bureau of Mines investigated methods for removing dragline bucket wire rope terminations with the objective of finding efficient methods that are safer than the method most commonly used at U.S. surface mines, which is to use the explosive impact of a projectile fired from a cannon to remove the rope termination. Removal of a wire rope termination for repair or replacement requires separation of the wedge and socket that lock together to secure the rope end. The Bureau investigated currently used methods and improved upon and tested two safer alternate methods for removing wire rope terminations. A cannon test program was conducted, using 40-and 50-gr primer (detonating) cord, to establish the possible force produced with a 4-in-bore cannon and a 55-lb projectile. Wedge and socket units supplied from cooperating mines were separated under controlled conditions to establish data on separation force requirements. The two alternate methods investigated were use of the force generated by (1) a pendulum ram and by (2) a portable hydraulic pusher. Both methods are capable of providing sufficient force to effect wedge and socket separations on draglines with up to 78-yd3 buckets under normal conditions.

A test series of small, precisely-controlled and thoroughly-monitored production blasts was conducted at two quarries. In each series, all variables except delay were kept constant, as much as practically possible. The first aim of the study was to determine the effect of local geology on ground vibration. The second aim was to test several hypotheses relating the effect of millisecond delay intervals to fragmentation and ground vibration. A resonant frequency of ground vibration was shown to be related to the thickness of the overburden, in accord with a model proposed by Gupta (1961). Since the overburden geology creating this resonant vibration cannot usually be changed, two methods were tested to choose delays such that blast vibrations would destructively interfere. These were shown to be effective in modifying both the peak particle velocity and response spectra of ground vibration. The delay interval chosen also affects fragmentation, primarily in massive rock, with an optimum relief between holes of 2 ms/ft. Strain gage records indicate a possible mechanism consistent with this information.

In 2005, a total of 2,063 coal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Coal mines comprised 14.1% of all mining operations. ? Bituminous mines comprised 92.6% (n=1,911) and anthracite mines 7.4% (n=152) of coal mining operations. ? Approximately 70% of all coal mines were located in three states: Kentucky (28.0%), West Virginia (21.8%), and Pennsylvania (20.6%).

An essentially chemical technique has been developed on a small scale for the efficient utilization of certain domestic titaniferous iron ores. Three main steps are involved: (1) Sintering the ore at 1,050° C. with carbon and soda ash to reduce the iron to metal powder, retaining the titania in the slag, (2) separating the powdered iron from the slag, after wet grinding, by magnetic or gravity methods, and (3) sulfuric-acid decomposition of the titania fraction to produce pigment and certain byproducts. The technique was first applied to the tailings from the Bureau of Mines bauxite-concentrating plant at Bauxite, Ark. A good grade of powdered iron was produced from this material. Subsequently, the work was diverted to the study of the titaniferous magnetite from the MacIntyre Mine at Tahawus, N.Y., because of the potentially higher recoveries of iron, titanium and vanadium. Ninety percent of the iron in this ore has been recovered as an iron powder analyzing 90 percent metallic iron and containing 2 to 3 percent TiO2. The remaining titania was found in the slag and was recovered as pigment-grade TiO2 by application of a suitable technique. The vanadium was distributed between the TiO2 fraction and the alkaline liquor resulting from the wet-grinding and magnetic-separation operations, with only a minor proportion retained by the metallic iron.
