Exposure to vibration induced in and around underground mine’s exploration is a major concern to vehicles operators. Most of these drivers over time develop serious spinal musculoskeletal and discs problems causing low back injuries. The first purpose of this paper is to analyze the performance and dynamic response of driver/operator when subjected to different levels of vibration due to rough road conditions depicted in a mine field. The second purpose of the paper is to quantify the energy transmission in the presence of seat padding with special characteristics and active suspension. Using experimental testing data collected at NIOSH/PRL (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health/ Pittsburgh Research Laboratory) along with model simulation algorithms developed at the University of Illinois at Chicago we investigated how acceleration transfer functions as well as absorbed power affects the different parts of the body. To this end, we used a previously validated human model which includes the head, torso segments and legs. The connective forces between body segments were modeled through modal analysis techniques from previous experimental data at the UIC Vehicle Technology Laboratory. The absorbed power and energy transmitted to the body are used as an index measure to assess the viability of the different seat padding’s and active seat suspension control strategies.

The behavior of wire ropes used in hoisting is not well understood. In an effort to improve this understanding, the structure of round-strand wire ropes was analyzed. This report provides a generalized mathematical model that completely describes the geometry of the wires. It consists of two sets of vector equations and is valid for any round-strand wire rope. One set of equations is used to trace the paths of wires that have the form of a single helix; the other is used for the paths of double helical wires. The specific model for a 33-mm 6×19 Seale, independent wire rope core (IWRC), right regular lay wire rope was presented as an example. The paths and the geometric properties of the wires, which include the path length per lay of strand, the curvature, and the torsion, were determined from this model. The effects of strain deformation were analyzed, resulting in a system of equations for determining the structural parameters of the deformed rope. In future work, the model could be used to analyze wire ropes of different constructions so that a more scientifically based understanding of rope behavior can be established.

In 1985, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied 49,875 acres of the 54,833-acre Big Jacks Creek Wilderness Study Area (ID-111-7C) in order to evaluate the mineral resources. The study area is located in Owyhee County, ID, about 15 miles southwest from Bruneau, ID. No mining districts are in the study area, but part of one placer claim, located in 1924, extended into it. The northern portion of the area was covered by oil and gas lease applications; all were cancelled prior to 1985. No economic concentrations of minerals were found in the study area. INTRODUCTION This report describes the USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) portion of a cooperative study with the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) to evaluate mineral resources and potential of the Big Jacks Creek study area at the request of the BLM (U.S. Bureau of Land Management). The USBM examines individual mines, prospects, claims, and mineralized zones, and evaluates identified mineral and energy resources. The USGS evaluates potential for undiscovered resources based on areal geological, geochemical, and geophysical surveys. Results of the investigations will be used to help determine the suitability of the study area for inclusion into the National Wilderness Preservation System. Although the immediate goal of this and other USBM mineral surveys is to provide data for the President, Congress, government agencies, and the public for land-use decisions, the long-term objective is to ensure the Nation has an adequate and dependable supply of minerals at a reasonable cost.

The emphasis is on the measurement procedure and the interpretation of the measurement rather than on the instrument itself.] The failure to properly sample for methane is a major contributing factor to methane explosion risk. Sampling errors are most likely to occur at mines or tunnels where the presence of methane is not suspected or during nonroutine tasks at mines or tunnels known to have gas. More specific information on methane sampling at continuous miner sections is in Chapter 3. Chapters 4 and 5 discuss sampling at longwall sections, and Chapter 14 discusses sampling at tunnels. METHANE DETECTORS FOR MINING Many models of gas detectors are available to measure methane concentrations, as well as most of the other contaminant gases found in mines and tunnels. An example is the iTX Multi-Gas Monitor, a portable gas detector available from Industrial Scientific Corp., Oakdale, PA. This handheld instrument measures several gases simultaneously. The cost (2004) ranges from $1,300 to $2,200, depending on the number of gases measured. Similar instruments are available from other manufacturers. Most methane detectors used in mining use a catalytic heat of combustion sensor to detect methane and other combustible gases. These have been proven through many years of reliable operation. In this Bureau of Mines evaluation of the domestic supply position of tungsten, certain tungsten resources in the United States are estimated as to quantity and grade and then are systematically costed in detail (excluding exploration costs). A supply curve is developed which depicts the quantity of tungsten (WO3) up to about 15.5 million short ton units that is producible at calculated price levels ranging from about $13 to $125 per short ton unit. About 10.4 million short ton units are available at a calculated price that is less than the present market price ($40). Total known resources amount to about 40.2 million short ton units. A very large portion of that quantity was not costed due to inadequate information on either resources or processing methods. Further exploration and research would have a significant effect on the availability of tungsten in the United States.

Probably one of the most significant departures in tunneling practice is the introduction of Diesel locomotives far haulage (Diesel trucks have been used for some time). The fallacy of the belief that they do not generate carbon monoxide or toxic gases and can be used indiscriminately has been proved by the authors through observation for several years of atmospheric conditions surrounding the use of Diesel engines in tunnels. Diesel locomotives haves been introduced in tunnel haulage for reasons other than safety or health. Except to the extent that they replace trolleys, with their danger of causing electrocutions, modern Diesel locomotives do not increase safety Or remove any ordinary hazards to safety or health. In fact, they create such hazards, the extent of which is limited entirely by the carbon monoxide-content level set, method of ventilation, adequacy of the measures.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has developed a computerized commodity flow model for strategic and critical materials This flow model is generic and applicable to most commodities and amenable to updating supply, demand, and/or production data change. The original model, with slight modifications, was used to track the flow of chromium. This report follows the flow of chromium through its metallurgical, chemical, and refractory applications, and highlights areas where significant losses occur because of downgrading, export, or disposal. The study indicates that materials containing 451,769 mt of chromium were consumed, including 99,221 mt of chromium from recycling, Chromium losses from all causes in 1989 were estimated to be 345,347 mt from a variety of areas. These areas and their chromium losses are as follows: processing losses, 38,825 mt; processing-downgraded scrap, 18,227 mt; manufacturing losses, 18,128 mt; manufacturing-downgraded scrap, 56,595 mt; prompt scrap exported, 1,531 mt; obsolete scrap exported, 43,443 mt; recovery losses, 155,529 mt; and recycling losses, 13,069 mt. Recycled chromium-containing material accounted for 22 pct of the apparent consumption of chromium in 1989.

Two pieces of European Union (EU) legislation together establish requirements for protection against risks from vibration at work. The vibration directive1 specifies duties of employers to protect workers from risks from exposure to vibration; the machinery directive2, specifies duties of manufacturers and suppliers regarding the safety of machinery marketed in the EU. This paper discusses both directives and the standardisation programmes that support them. It also addresses the implementation of these requirements in Great Britain. Employers’ duties: the vibration directive This directive requires employers to assess and control risks to health and safety arising from hand-arm vibration (HAV) and whole-body vibration (WBV). Member States were required to implement the directive in national legislation by 6 July 2005. Employers are required to eliminate vibration risk at source, or reduced to a minimum. The duties include: assessing risk and exposure; planning and implementing the necessary risk control measures; providing and maintaining suitable work equipment; providing workers with information and training on risks and their control; and monitoring and reviewing the effectiveness of the risk control programme. Daily exposure exceeding a specified action value triggers a requirement for a programme of technical and organisational measures to minimise vibration exposures and the resulting risk, and the provision of health surveillance. Exposures above a specified limit value are prohibited. When conducting their risk assessments, employers are required to “assess and, if necessary, measure” the vibration exposure of workers, for comparison with the action and limit values. Vibration measurement in the workplace is not expected in all cases and the use of vibration information from equipment manufacturers is specifically mentioned. This provides a link with the machinery directive (see below). Manufacturers’ and suppliers’ duties: The machinery directive The machinery directive, first introduced in 1989, is intended to remove barriers to trade. It puts duties on manufacturers and suppliers who place machinery on the European market to design their products to eliminate or reduce risks to health and safety and to warn the user of any residual risks, providing information required for safe use (for example, operator training, maintenance and selection of consumables). This final report describes the work accomplished under U.S. Bureau of Mines Contract #H0242011 - "Feasibility of Automated Rail Haulage Systems in Underground Coal Mines." The report outlines the base for the development and evaluation of automated rail haulage systems in terms of the service requirements for haulage systems in underground coal mines, and of the performance of existing haulage systems. A generalized automated rail haulage system concept is defined. A safety impact analysis of automating the mainline portion of the underground system indicates a 50% reduction in injuries and fatalities. A cost effectiveness (over the total life cycle) study for the system indicates a cost benefit can be obtained from implementing an automated rail system. The design specifications for the total automated rail haulage system - including subsystems and components -are developed, and the equipment types and general design approaches evaluated, with selections outlined. A detailed conceptual design for a prototype automated system is described. Conclusions and recommendations are presented, and a program plan devised for implementing a proto-type automated rail haulage system demonstration in an operating underground coal mine by 1980.

This report3/ gives the results of a reconnaissance of mining districts in Eureka County, Nevada, made from September 25 to October 20 and from October 27 to November 5, 1577. During this time, virtually all the districts were visited and many data obtained on active and inactive properties. This report covers the locations of the various districts, geological background, ownership and brief descriptions of mines and prospects, information on past and current operations, and, other data likely to be useful to those interested in the development of our mineral resources. From the viewpoint of past production in the county, the silver-lead-gold deposits at Eureka have been tie most important, followed by the silver deposits at Cortez and Mineral Hill. The period of greatest activity in the foregoing districts was from 1870 to 1990, when Eureka was one of the principal mining areas in Nevada; the production of lead was sufficient to affect its price in all the commercial centers of the world. Eureka also merits the distinction of being the birthplace of the silver-lead smelting industry in the United States.

Results of the mineral resource study of the Upper Priest Lake RARE II study area indicate a low potential for the discovery and economic recovery of silver and lead in the Prichard Formation near contacts with the Kaniksu Batholith in the vicinity of the Mountain Chief Mine (fig. 1). Silver and lead minerals locally occur disseminated and in irregular quartz fissure-fillings in the Prichard Formation. Between 18^6 and 1967, 105 lode raining claims were located in the study area. The area was designated for "further planning" in the Final Environmental statement but was later changed to "nonwilderness" by President Carter after work was scheduled for the area.

Laboratory wear testing was conducted by the Bureau of Mines on a variety of typical wear-resistant alloys used in mining and mineral-processing equipment to establish their relative spalling and abrasion resistance. Test specimens in the form of 75-mm-diam balls were subjected to repeated impacts until they broke, spalled excessively, or received several hundred thousand impacts. Pin specimens removed from the balls were evaluated for high-load abrasive wear. The alloys in-cluded commercial forged steels, cast steels, manganese steels, and four types of white cast iron, with a range of heat treatments. The effects of hardness and microstructure on impact wear and abrasive wear are discussed. The data should help mine operators select the compositions and heat treatments that best suit service conditions.

The investigations recorded in this bulletin were conducted by the Pacific Coke & Coal Co. in cooperation with the United States Bureau of Mines and the University of Washington. They cover one phase of a comprehensive investigation to determine whether coals from an extensive, undeveloped area of Pierce County, Wash., can be used in the manufacture of coke for the iron blast furnace. The completed investigation had three parts: (1) A geological survey of the coal property, (2) washing and crushing tests of the coals, and (3) coking and by-product tests. The geological survey, which was not conducted in cooperation with the Bureau of Mines and the University of Washington, included systematic tracing of the coal beds by test holes throughout the property, except some portions covered by an impenetrable layer of glacial drift. By this means all of the beds were correlated, their thickness and general character were determined, and tonnage estimates were made. Only such parts of the survey results as are necessary to a full explanation of the investigations described herein are included in this bulletin.

Annually, the United States uses more than 4 billion tons of new mineral materials, or about 40,000 pounds per person-about half being mineral fuels and the other half being metals and nonmetallics. Stable and economic domestic mining, mineral, metal, and mineral reclamation industries are essential to the economy. The value of United States energy and processed materials of mineral origin exceds $200 billion annually. Although a number of minerals are imported, especially some designated as "strategic and critical," most U.S. mineral supplies are derived from the domestic mines and processing facilities that you will be seeing, reading about, and visiting as you use this visitor guide. We hope you enjoy your experiences. This pamphlet, a guide to mining and mineral operations that may be observed or visited and some other points of interest relating to minerals, is intended to aid tourists and students who are interested in mining. Some may wish to study our Nation's romantic past; others may plan to enter the minerals industry as a career; still others may have a primary interest in conservation practices. The pamphlet is also intended to aid State and local officials, Chambers of Commerce, and mining firms in answering some of the many questions of tourists and students.

Past issues of Minerals and Materials have discussed such aspects of the economy as consumption and investment expenditures, interest rates, productivity, and international trade barriers and their effect on the minerals industry here and abroad. In this issue, we will (l) look at recent indications of a possible economic recovery, (2) present 1983 expectations reflecting the results of industry surveys conducted by the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC), and (3) briefly discuss the contribution of the U.S. mining industry to total gross national product (GNP). THE RECOVERY Throughout most of 1982, DOC's Composite Index of Leading Indicators provided evidence of impending improvement in the economy. The index increased moderately during eight of the months in 1982 and then jumped an estimated 3.6 percent in January 1983 (table 1). While the leading indicators continued to predict improvement, the general economy, as measured by the Index of Industrial Production, continued its slide through November 1982 (table 2). Finally total industrial production increased in December 1982 and continued on an upward path in January and February, as predicted by the leading indicators.

Square Butte has no history of mineral development or production. Surface mapping, radiometric surveys and chemical analyses of rock samples reveal no mineral potential. The area has a speculative potential for petroleum and natural gas. INTRODUCTION The Square Butte Instant Wilderness Study Area, in Chouteau County, Montana, consists of 1,946 acres (788 ha) about 35 miles (56 km) southeast of Fort Benton and 50 miles (80 km) northwest of Lewistown (fig. 1). This study was performed under provisions of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act (Public Law 94-579, October 21, 1976), in conjunction with the U.S. Geological Survey, which is responsible for regional geological, geochemical, and geophysical investigations, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines, which determines the mineral potential of existing mines, prospects, or mineralized areas.

The expansion of city street laving which characterized the ten years ended December 31, 1929, according to a survey of 201 representative cities, made by the bureau of Mines, reached it climax in 1927, with decreases reported for 1928 and 1929. The upward trend, followed by a decline, was general in cities of all sizes included in this study, but was most pronounced in cities of 40,000 to 100,600 inhabitant and in the Northeastern, Southeastern, and Southwestern States. In the North-Central States the trend of paving; was downward from 1925 to 1929; in the Pacific, and Rocky Mountain States it was generally upward. Over the nation as a whole, bituminous types of paving continued to lead, furnishing two-thirds of the total street pavement laid in the 201 cities from 1925 to 1929. The actual yardage of bituminous pavement laid in these cities, however, was 3.8 per cent less in 1923-than in 1925, and the ratio of bituminous pavement to the total pavement t dropped from 70.4 per cent in 1925 to 62.1 per cent in 1928, rising to 65.1 per cent in 1929. The area paved with Portland-cement concrete amounted to only one-fourth of the total, pavement laid in these cities from 1925. to 1923., but the yardage of Portland-cement pavement increased by half during the period, and its share in the total pavement grew from 19.3 per cent in 1925 to 30.0 per cent in 1928, declining to 29.5 per cent in 1929. Brick, block, and stone pavements, which constituted the remaining one-twelfth of the total pavement laid in the 201 cities, decreased one-third in yardage, and declined in relative importance from 10.3 per cent in 1925 to 6.6 per cent in 1929.

RECORD production of cement, clays, salt, sand and gravel, and stone highlighted the mineral industry of the State in 1956. Coal and iron-ore production declined owing to increased imports of foreign iron ore and decreased demand for metallurgical coke. Alabama ranked second in production of bauxite and of native asphalt, and third in output of iron ore. New developments in the State included the Citronelle oilfield and its 97 wells, which more than doubled the total production of petroleum compared with 1955. There is no question about the impetus that field has given to the oil and gas industry in Alabama, now 13 years old. The State's 4 oilfields are in southwest Alabama and its 1 gasfield is in Marion County, in the Warrior coal basin.
