Data obtained from a copper mine were used in a comparative study of the reserve estimates generated by applying geostatistical methods to surface borehole data, underground core drilling results and assay values from chip sampling. Global estimation of the deposit performed by kriging of the low-density sampling data from the surface boreholes did not provide reliable results, but could identify the potentially mineralised zones. The reserve generated from core drilling results correlated well with that estimated from chip sample data and with that estimated by the conventional methods used at the mine. A satisfactory reserve evaluation could, therefore, be obtained by kriging of the data from the underground core drilling alone, provided that a systematic sampling procedure was adopted. Estimates based on chip sampling information could be used as a check, which could avoid the current practice of chip sampling of most of the mine workings. The aim should be to develop a semi-variogram for the deposit, which could be used to estimate the reserves by kriging

Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralisation related to mafic and ultramafic rocks, held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. PGE-bearing sulphide mineralisation is contained in the lower 600 m of the Upper Central Layered Zone of the intrusion. There are four regimes with distinctive crystallisation characteristics. PGE content is low, both in bulk rock and in terms of metal in 100% sulphides, in the sulphide-rich cumulates but increases sharply in the sulphide-poor cumulates at the base of regime 1. Increases in regime 2 have no such clear relationship with incoming cumulus sulphides. PGE contents are low throughout regime 3, but regime 4 has sulphides with high PGE content, decreasing rapidly upwards, at the base of many of its cyclic units. The observations are interpreted as indicating that sulphide saturation occurred in the middle of a cyclic unit in regime 1, after which fractional segregation of sulphide caused a systematic decrease in PGE content. The resulting contrast between 40 000 ppb PGE in sulphides below the mineralised zone and less than 1 000 ppb above is of practical importance in exploration for such zones. In regime 2 the magma chamber was open to fresh influxes and PGE content was not so sensitive to sulphide saturation. In many regime 4 units influxes of new magma caused immediate sulphide saturation and PGE depletion, so that PGE-rich cumulates do not underlie PGE-bearing sulphide zones. Theoretical analysis indicates that regime 1-type behaviour is likely to characterise intrusions below the level at which plagioclase has entered as a cumulus phase and regime 4-type behaviour above

Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. The complex exemplifies a class of olivine-rich, platiniferous ophiolite complexes generated by unusually high degrees of hydrous melting above a subduction zone. Crystallisation of abundant olivine from unusually picritic magmas produced an exceptionally thick sequence of crustal dunite cumulates. Significant (1-4 ppm) concentrations of Pt+Pd occur where sulphide-bearing dunites are spatially associated with podiform chromite concentrations. In the area north of the Balta Sound, the chromitites appear to lie in distinct stratigraphic zones. A detailed programme of lithogeochemical and soil-rock interface geochemical exploration led to the intersection by diamond drilling of three stratiform horizons of sulphide-bearing dunites and associated precious-metal mineralisation. The refining of two molten Ag-Cu alloys, containing 7.5 and 11.2 mass% Cu, with a borosilicate slag was investigated using both air and pure O2 to determine the effects of the following variables: flow rate of oxidising gas; injection time; mass of sodium borosilicate flux; and injection of the oxidising gas into either the slag or the metal. The results demonstrate that more than 90% of the Cu can be removed with Ag losses of less than 5% and that refined metal with a Cu content of less than 0.5 mass% can be produced. Ag losses to the slag increased with the amount of Cu removed, and a mechanism is proposed to account for this

Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. Detailed paragenetic studies of the post-tectonic fracture-hosted vein mineralisation have demonstrated a complex paragenesis, reflecting a multi-phase combination of regional metallogenesis and tectonics through time. Previously published work regarding paragenesis and zoning was oversimplified. Two major epochs of mineralisation resulted in the emplacement of the A1 group of assemblages, from which lead, copper and silver were the main metals mined, and the A2 group, whose galena is only moderately argentiferous but which were major sources of lead and zinc. Tectonic and tentative isotopic evidence points to post-orogenic relaxation as the mechanism for development of the A1 assemblages in the early Devonian, whereas the A2 assemblages are believed to reflect Variscan extensional regimes and regional metallogenesis in the early Carboniferous and Permian

Sublevel caving is likely to remain the dominant system at both Malmberget and Kiruna for the foreseeable future. The sub-level interval has increased from 12 m in 1983 to 30 m, requiring more effective drifting and the development of a contour blasting technique to reduce requirements for rock reinforcement. Production drilling is mainly by hydraulic hammers or water-powered in-the-hole machines drilling 115 m diameter holes. Loading operations are undertaken 7 days/week with 15-25 tonne capacity electric shovels. Production has increased by nearly 70% since 1983 and productivity has risen threefold

After measuring the kinetics of Ni reduction from a SiO2-saturated fayalite slag into a Cu-based metallic phase on a laboratory scale, a general model was developed that is capable of simulating mass transfer to and from metal-slag, slag-gas and metal-gas interfaces for multiple species. The model was used to simulate the reactions that occur when Cu and Ni are reduced from fayalite-based slags into a Cu-based metallic phase. The catalysed direct reduction of copper sulphide with carbon and lime was investigated in the range 850-1000 degrees C using Cu2S-CaO-C and Cu2S-4CaO-4C reaction mixtures. The effects of the catalytic additives K2CO3, Li2CO3, Na2CO3, NaF, Na2SO3 and the ternary eutectic (K,Li,Na)2CO3 were determined. Potassium carbonate, sodium fluoride and the ternary appear to be the most effective catalysts for the direct reduction process. The rate enhancement of the catalysed carbothermic reduction of copper sulphide in the presence of lime was explained in terms of the catalysis of the Boudouard reaction

A petrographic and microthermometric study of fluid inclusions in the Kentstown Granite, crosscutting quartz (VI) and calcite+quartz (V 2) veins in the granite and calcite+quartz (V 2) veins in the overlying sediments was performed on samples taken from the borehole. Comparisons of the type 1, type 2 and type 3 fluid inclusion populations recorded in the present study with those from other Irish Caledonian granites strongly suggest a similar fluid evolutionary history. Furthermore, the low-temperature CaC12-rich brines (type 5) of this study, which must be syn- to post-Lower Carboniferous in age, have correlatives both in Irish Caledonian granites and in the Lower Carboniferous base-metal deposits of the Irish midlands

Reduction kinetics from slags containing CuO(0.5), ZnO, PbO, NiO and SnO into a Cu-based metal phase were subjected to computer simulation using a previously developed model for the kinetics of metal-slag-gas reactions that assumes mass-transfer control in all phases. The effects were examined of changing bulk Fe oxide activity, gas reducing potential, temperature, Fe content of the Cu phase and metal/slag ratio. The results permit practical conclusions to be drawn about industrial slag-cleaning practice, but the model is still limited in terms of thermodynamic inputs and the idealisation of reaction conditions

In the Box-Wilson method, the correlation between dependent and independent variables is represented by a polynomial response function, whose constant and coefficients are determined by applying regression analysis to the experimental data collected. The five levels used for each variable consist of a minimum, a maximum and three intermediate values. A study was carried out using Ni-Cu ore from Sudbury, Ontario, in which 15 experiments designed according to the Box-Wilson method were carried out in random order and in duplicate. The two sets of replicate data showed close similarity, with an overall variance of 0.311 for the five parameters studied. The response functions were used to optimise frother dosage, collector concentration and air flow rate and an experiment was then carried out under the optimised conditions; the results agreed closely with those predicted by the response functions

The purpose of the cut is to provide a free face to which the remainder of a development or breasting round can break. The results of field testing in drifts and at a quarry face were used as a basis for a description of the rock breakage and flushing mechanism in the cut. It was concluded that the important features of a cut design are proper hole spacing, sufficient relief volume, drilling accuracy and relief holes slightly longer than the planned length of the round. The void space provided by the relief holes should be about 15% of the cut volume, with more required in weak, highly fissured rocks. The importance of drilling accuracy increases with round length, an error being magnified by the small blasthole spacing. The first hole pulls only about 20% of the round length, 4-6 holes having to be fired before the cut is pulled close to its design depth. The first four blastholes should be fired with a minimum inter-hole delay of 100 ms to provide progressive relief of burden and avoid the superimposition of ground vibrations. The earliest-firing charge should be closest to the relief area and act laterally, while the first of the vertically-fired charges to be detonated should be the uppermost. Problems during cut-pulling include sympathetic detonation, dynamic pressure desensitisation, charge disruption and freezing of the cut

Modern advances have led to sweep and multibeam bathymetric surveying techniques that yield three-dimensional images of the sea floor and have also produced high-powered personal computers with which to control the data and analyse the results. At Sydney, in Nova Scotia, the topography of the sea floor over the longwall workings was observed before and after mining with a precision echo-sounder in 1987-89, with sweep bathymetry in 1993 and with multibeam bathymetry in 1994-95. The results of the latter programme produced what was probably the first observation of a complete three-dimensional subsidence trough over a longwall panel 2 500 m x 168 m. The subsidence has been quantified to a sufficient degree of accuracy to allow simple trend analysis, which has shown that the pattern and shape of movements are similar to those found elsewhere but with significantly smaller maximum subsidence. One of the major factors restricting an increase in the productivity of a longwall mine is lower productivity obtained in a development panel. There has been a significant improvement in gate road development, particularly in mines requiring high density roof and rib bolting within 2 m of the face. Advance rates have increased from an average of 3 m to 5 m per shift in 1985 up to an average of 5 m to 10 m per shift in 1991. In mines at shallow depths with reasonably good conditions the increase has not been that significant. Advance rates have increased from an average of 7 m to 12 ni per shift in 1985 to an average of 12 m to 15 m per shift in 1991. Compared to the United States' (US) development rates, these are much lower. Extensive research work has been carried out to minimise cutting, wheeling, support setting time, and to optimise pillar length to achieve maximum advance rates. Pillar optimisation is very important in order to expedite adverse rates. This paper investigates various development rate technologies, both present and future, and optimises pillars to improve these dev elupment rates. Pillar optimisation is based upon time and motion studies conducted at mines in the Illawara region of New' South Wales, Australia, and the basic tools of arithmetic.

In this method the state of an open-pit mine is represented by the number of benches that are mined in each predesigned mining phase (or pushback). Consequently, a specific mining schedule can be represented by a sequence of states which starts with the topography of the mine site and ends with the ultimate pit. For a given set of mining phases all feasible states are first generated and sequences of states are then evaluated for technical and economical feasibility. The best sequence, which gives the maximum net present value (NPV), is found by applying a dynamic programming optimisation algorithm. The algorithm also optimises the cut-off grade which satisfies the mill feed requirement for each planning period. It was found that the algorithm can be used not only for scheduling but also as an effective tool for analysing the effects of mining and milling capacities and cut-off constraints on the mining schedule and the total NPV. The algorithm, which was programmed in C, was successfully applied to a large Au-Cu deposit

The co-disposal of coarse and fine coal wastes by combined pumping through a pipeline to subaerial deposition was pioneered in Australia in 1990 by Jeebropilly colliery in Queensland. Significant segregation of fines is found to occur in its co-disposal delta, leading to the formation of distinct mainly coarse upper and fine-dominated lower segments; the upper delta drains rapidly and is able to support traffic on its surface immediately after deposition. An existing theory of subaerial deposition, originally developed for mine tailings alone and later extended to trial co-disposal, is shown to apply also to the upper segment of the full-scale Jeebropilly delta
