Abstract-Eclogite is an important source of diamond in the upper mantle, but is more localized than peridotite. Using eclogitic minerals in kimberlite and diamond exploration is also more problematic than using the well-known peridotite-derived indicator minerals Cr-pyrope and magnesiochromite. The problems include color similarities between orange garnets from eclogites, Cr-poor megacrysts, and crustal garnets, chemical similarities with Cr-poor megacryst suite garnets (specifically elevated Na2O contents), and low abundance of eclogite garnet xenocrysts in most known kimberlites. Chemical screens must be used carefully to distinguish between varieties of orange garnets in exploration samples. For example, most orange garnets of crustal origin have >22 wt% FeO, with mantle eclogite garnets having lower values. Na2O-bearing garnets from the Cr-poor megacryst suite can be distinguished from Na2O-bearing garnets from diamondiferous eclogites by the elevated TiO2 contents of the former. The low abundance of eclogite garnet xenocrysts in kimberlites worldwide, however, may dictate that use of eclogite garnets in diamond exploration in most cases be restricted to advanced stages of kimberlite exploration and evaluation of kimberlite diamond potential. Crpyropes, Mg-ilmenites and Cr-rich chromites are more useful than eclogitic garnets in most stages of diamond exploration. If orange garnet xenocrysts are sought in a kimberlite exploration program, those from the Cr-poor megacryst suite will be more useful than eclogite derived garnets, due to the typical great abundance of the former, although they carry no information of the diamond potential of the host kimberlite.

However, before concentrating in any detail on these it is important to understand the broad purposes and basic techniques of any accounting system in any major business.The three broad purposes of an Accounting System are:- Administering, controlling, and recording the flow of cash in and out of the business. Cash is, of course, converted into other assets (or stores of value) such as inventory, plant and equipment, etc. These assets also have to be administered, controlled and recorded.- Internal reporting to Management for information, for control, and for use in making business plans and decisions. - External reporting to stockholders, government, lenders and other outside parties.In this chapter we shall organize our discussion of accounting practice in mineral processing plants around these three purposes of accounting and focus in some detail on specific practices and techniques with which operating personnel will be routinely involved. The question of whether the air curtain principle could be used under conditions prevailing in Canadian metal mines was investigated. A vertical, portable BERRY air curtain was tested, at first in a wind tunnel built at Ecole Polytechnique at full scale (8-by 8-ft cross section) to simulate a drift and its lateral connections, and then in the haulage ways of a metal mine under actual conditions. The results permit us to predict under what conditions this type of air curtain is capable of acting as an air stopping or flow regulator and how it could be further developed.

Microsegregation manifests its effect on microstructural evolution of cast or welded alloys which in turn influences their important mechanical and electro-chemical properties. In the above context, mathematical models of microsegregation have proven to play an important role in estimating the nature and predicting the effects of this phenomenon in wide varieties of solidification processes. Microsegregation models are useful in designing new commercial alloys, in estimating the homogenization time for the post-process heat treatments and in many other practical applications. In this study, two semi-analytical models of microsegregation were developed to predict the concentration field of solute in the liquid and solid regions for dendritic solidification of binary metallic alloys. Both models assume that the growing dendrites are cylindrical in shape. This assumption is more realistic compared to the common assumptions of plate like dendrites that most of the earlier researchers employed in their microsegregation modeling study. The solute redistribution profile, in the developing solid layer, necessary to determine the back diffusion parameter was derived from Fick's second law for the model without coarsening. The application of this parameter in a wide range of conditions and the use of its basic form in the model with coarsening has been verified. The concept of coordinate transformation and enhancement of back-diffusion Fourier number were used in deriving the model which took into account the coarsening of dendrites. The models are then extended to deal with rapid solidification and peritectic transformations and the results were compared with relevant experimental data for Aluminum and other alloys. A good agreement between model predictions and experimental results was found.

"Different methods aiming at specific energy calculation and design of AG/SAG circuits are used in mining. They include JK DWT/SMC test, SAGDesign test and CWi/RWi/BWi tests. The simplest methods with no secret equations and giving energy required for grinding in kWh/t were proposed by F.?. Bond and J.H. Starkey. D.J. Barratt proposed to use results of CWi/RWi/BWi tests for AG/SAG mill sizing. The present paper gives an alternative for forecast of specific AG/SAG energy. The principle is similar to the theory proposed earlier and consists in cumulative AG/SAG energy calculation using indices of rod and ball grinding (RWi+BWi) without impact crushing index (CWi). Then total energy is divided between two grinding stages using special formulas based on extensive statistical information. The forecast indices of AG/SAG and ball grinding are similar to the SAGDesign testing results. Hereinafter the predicted indices are used for mill sizing of the whole grinding circuit. The method considered in the paper enables prediction of AG/SAG energy based on the test results according to Bond method. The proposed method version was not widely published earlier. The aim of the work was to elaborate cost-effective, reliable and accessible way to determine specific AG/SAG energy. At this stage of method development, it is recommended to use it only for works at preliminary Geometallurgy stage (Scoping, Pre-Feasibility). At design stage the obtained data should be confirmed by appropriate testing using alternative JK DWT/SMC and SAGDesign methods.INTRODUCTIONAppropriate crushing and grinding testing is required to design efficient comminution circuits. It is obviously important to obtain accurate information about ore hardness properties since the main energy consumption at the plant is associated with comminution processes. Moreover, it is required to apply the processes that make it possible to minimize operating costs and efficiently use capacity of the installed equipment installed.When studying ore hardness properties, it is required to take into account that breakage of the material is performed using different equipment. That is why accurate selection of the equipment and the circuit calculation without relevant testworks is impossible. Ideally, the testworks should provide answers to the following questions: determination of ore hardness properties, determination of specific energy consumption for comminution as well as obtaining of sufficient amount of statistically significant results from the tests. The results from crushability and grindability testworks in the first place provide assessment of ore hardness properties and in addition correlate with throughput of the respective equipment. The data obtained can be used for modeling of comminution circuits at the stage of the technology development"

Shaft lining reinforcing analysis of two shafts under construction has been presented in this study. The first shaft was driven from the surface, while the second was deepened. Mining and geological conditions have been studied with respect to the lining capacity. The improvement of shaft stability comprised two elements, i.e. reinforcement of the shaft lining capacity and improvement of the strength properties of the rock mass. In both tested cases, the particular hazard was connected with non uniform loadings of the lining, which could generate shearing stresses within lining structure. Thus such elements as armored concrete with high strength properties, bolting and injection sealing of the rock mass, and the use of special ring reinforcing the shaft lining have been used in order to reinforce the shaft-rock mass system. Practical conclusions related with new technological solutions, allowing the rock mass and shaft lining reinforcement, have been included for the present study. General Description Due to the extreme cold weather experienced in Flin Flon during the winter months, thought and precaution were necessary in the design of the plant buildings. The machine shop, carpenter shop, drill shop, and coal plant buildings are similar in the building materials used in their construction. They are sided with two-inch shiplap, insulated with celotex and asbestos paper, and covered with corrugated iron on all side-walls. Roofing consists of 2 by 4 lumber on edge, laminated, and further covered by celotex and three-ply roofing. These buildings are heated by means of unit heaters. The heaters are primarily steam-heated radiators, through which the air of the buildings is circulated by electrically-driven fans. Our machine shop is located to the east of, but central to, the main operating buildings of the mine and plant, and is so connected by a net work of tracks as to be able to serve all portions of the entire plant conveniently. The building is divided into two bays, the main bay 53 ft. by 340 ft., and the east bay 24 ft. by 340 ft. The shop office and drafting room, a two-story annex 24 ft. by 30 ft., is located on the west side of the shop. The arrangement within the shop is such as to house conveniently the several departments, namely, heavy machine tool section, repair floor section, boiler shop heavy tool and floor section, blacksmith heavy tool and forge section, tool room, electric welding rooms, stock room, tin and copper shop, and electrical parts and armature winding and repair shop (see Figure 1). All the heavy tools, the repair floor section, and railway tracks are so located in the large open bay as to be fully serviced by an electrically operated 15-ton bridge crane, with a span of 50 feet and a travel the full length of the shop. A standard-gauge railway track, branched off the main line, penetrates the full depth of the building. This track lies along the extreme east side of the main bay, allowing easy entrance and movement of rolling stock and heavy machinery, loaded on standard flat-cars, to the repair floors in the main bay. Eight jib cranes, affixed to building columns, further facilitate the heavy repair work throughout the various shop divisions. Our light and heavy machine tools are standard equipment, not unlike tools used in mine, mill, and railway shops.

"Following a brief explanation of the land arrangements under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, this paper will examine both a mineral exploration agreement and a mining development agreement negotiated between two large mining companies and two different Alaska Native institutions. One of the institutions is a village corporation involved with an exploration agreement and the other is one of the Alaska Native regional corporations, which is party to a mining and development agreement with Cominco Alaska for the development of the Red Dog lead and zinc mine.Special attention will be given to the factors to be considered when dealing with small aboriginal owners with few resources in the context of an exploration agreement, including development issues which must be considered early in the process. The paper will also discuss the unique royalty and taxation structures developed for the Red Dog Mine Agreement as well as environmental issues. "The Norita deposit is an Archean volcanogenic-exhalative Fe-Zn- Cu sulphide accumulation of the distal type, consisting of six overlapping stratiform massive sulphide lenses, interbedded with exhalative cherts and thin pillow basalt flows, which formed down-topographic-slope from a mineralized hydrothermal discharge zone in the Norita rhyolite. The sulphide lenses are of two main types: channel-fill deposits such as the Main Zone and Main Zone West, composed of intricately layered pyrite-sphalerite-chert, which formed by the dynamic down-slope transport and re-deposition of sulphide exhaled from the vent zone; and stratiform lenses such as the Cu-rich A-Zone and A-Zone West, which formed even farther down-slope, in basinal depressions flanking the dome. Although rotated into a vertical position by folding, the sulphide lenses are otherwise essentially undeformed and contain a wide range of preserved primary sedimentary structures.Of prime importance in exploration has been the recognition that the formation of the distal sulphide lenses was controlled by submarine paleotopography, and that it is possible to approximate the sea-floor paleotopography using variations in the thickness and strike extent of the interbedded volcanic rocks. This has proved to be a major and successful exploration tool in the search for further sulphide mineralization in the mine, and offers prospects for use elsewhere in the district."

The future development of nickel laterite deposits is crucial with regards to satisfying impending nickel demands. The commercial implementation of new hydro/pyrometallurgical processes in recent years has led to significant improvements in the extraction of nickel from the laterite ores. One potential alternative pyrometallurgical processing route would be to selectively reduce the nickel and produce a concentrate with nickel contents similar to those attainable in the conventional flotation of sulphide ores. However, even bench scale studies have not yet been able to produce a high grade (>15% nickel) concentrate from a low grade laterite ore. The present research involved the microwave vacuum reduction roasting of a nickel laterite ore to yield a high grade concentrate, rich in nickel. Firstly, the effects of temperature and pressure on the nickel grade and recovery were investigated using a thermodynamic model. Secondly, briquettes containing a mixture of charcoal and a low grade silicate nickel laterite ore were reacted in a microwave vacuum system. The experimental variables studied were the input microwave energy, pressure and absorbed microwave power. Thirdly, the ferronickel in the reacted briquette was concentrated by magnetic separation and nickel grades of up to 21% could be achieved.

Fine powders, with the bulk of the particle diameters Jess than 10 microns, were aerated so that each particle was, on the average, separated from its neighbours by 1.3 to 2 mean diameters. In this state, measurements were made of the viscosity and settling rate of the powder, and the interfacial tension between it and a moist pellet. From the viscosity measurements, qualitative analogies are drawn between the behaviour of the aerated powder and that of a dense gas near its critical point.

THE production and inspection of the materials of war involves thousands of observations. Logical action is generally based on the interpretation of many observations. The success of such action depends upon the accuracy of the observations and the soundness of the interpretation placed upon them. There are countless instances where the observer 'sees but perceives not'; that is, the significance of a group of observations is lost, due either to faulty interpretation or to no interpretation at all being placed on the results. This condition is being partly corrected in the United Kingdom and the United States (1) by the promotion of certain principles by Ordnance officials. The term Quality Control has been adopted to describe a system of studying and controlling industrial products by methods of handling observations. In these pages an attempt is made to outline in a non-technical manner some of the ideas used in the handling of observations. Of course the authenticity of the observations determines the worth of any decisions based on them. No matter how brilliant is the theory built on unreliable sampling, it is usually of little practical value. n some fields it is almost impossible to obtain observations free from bias. Let us suppose that observers of speed in miles per hour were available for judgment: (a) a bystander, (b) a motorcycle policeman, and (c) a motorist accused of speeding. The bystander might be unbiased but probably would be very inaccurate. The motorist is usually biased on the low side. The policeman is the only qualified observer and, if over-zealous, he might be biased on the high side. Conclusions drawn from large numbers of biased observations naturally would be of little value.

THE output of coal from the Province of Alberta reached its peak; in the year 1928, when 7,334,179 tons were produced. Following this, a steady decline was recorded, and in 1930 a low mark of 4,564, 290 tons was made. Since that time, however, the tendency has been upward, and this year (1937) 5,551,682 tons were produced, compared with 5,696, 375 tons in 1936 and 5,462,973 tons in 1935. The value of the output in 1937 was $14,434,969, against $14, 720,004 in 1936. The coals of Alberta have been classed under three heads, viz., domestic, sub-bituminous, and bituminous The domestic (or lignite) and the sub-bituminous coals are used chiefly for domestic purposes, with the possible exception of the smaller sizes and the output of the two stripping pits at Stereo and Coal Valley The bituminous output is used mainly by the railways, for locomotive purposes, which, in 1937, accounted for 80.6 per? cenr of the total sales of bituminous coal. A fair proportion is sold for stationary engine and steam purposes and, in 1937, 25,000 tons were used in making briquettes at plants operated by the Canmore Coal Company, Limited, and Brazeau Collieries, Limited. The International Coal & Coke Company, Limited, used 99,500 tons in their plant at Coleman, for making coke. The bulk of the 66,000 tons of coke produced was sold for use at the smelter at Trail, B.C.

"During the history of the sulphur industry there have been three distinct phases of production. Factors controlling supplies during these periods have shifted from demand for sulphur to demand for energy and a cleaner environment. The pattern of brimstone production is t raced through these phases and includes estimates of future supply; these indicate an involuntary excess production of some 20 million plus tons per year by 1980 unless some large-scale new uses are found. Traditional uses for sulphur, including fertilizer, chemicals, fibers, etc., are generally expanding slowly; how• ever, supply in ""by-product"" form alone will soon outstrip demand. The predicted oversupply situation can be corrected by the development of novel potential markets. Promising areas include construction materials, insulation and plastics, among others."

En quoi consistent les études de suivi des effets sur l?environnement (ESEE)? Les ESEE constituent une méthode de suivi scientifique que l?on peut employer pour déterminer la santé des écosystèmes aquatiques (qui peuvent être touchés par l?activité humaine) et l?efficacité des mesures de protection de l?environnement. Les ESEE sont des évaluations scientifiques itératives du poisson, de l?habitat du poisson et des ressources halieutiques. Le programme comporte des phases séquentielles de deux à six ans de suivi, d?interprétation et de compte rendu au cours desquelles la fréquence et le type de suivi dépendent des résultats des études précédentes. Le programme des ESEE pour les mines de métaux est fondé sur un accord conclu à l?unanimité entre les intervenants. Les exigences du programme et les guides techniques connexes ont été élaborés à la suite d?une consultation multilatérale à laquelle ont participé les représentants du secteur privé, du gouvernement et des collectivités. Toutes les mines assujetties au Règlement sur les effluents des mines de métaux (REMM), aux termes de la Loi sur les pê ches, doivent procéder à une ESEE dans le cadre de l?autorisation qu?ils ont reç ue de rejeter des effluents. Le REMM a été enregistré le 6 juin 2002 et publié dans la Partie II de la Gazette du Canada le 19 juin 2002 (SOR/DORS/2002-222).

"Current studies of bearing capacity for shallow foundations tend to rely on the hypothesis of an isolated footing. In practice a footing is never isolated; it is mostly in interaction with other footings. This paper focuses on a numerical study to evaluate the ultimate bearing capacity for two interfering strip footings resting on a rock mass in which the strength can be described by the generalised Hoek–Brown failure criterion. This criterion is applicable to intact rock or heavily jointed rock masses that can be considered homogeneous and isotropic.The material is assumed to exhibit perfect plasticity and obeys an associated flow rule. The effects of Hoek–Brown parameters including GSI, mi, and sci were studied and the corresponding results are presented. For different clear spacing (S) between the footings, values of the efficiency factor (?) were determined; where ? is defined as the ratio of the failure load for an interfering new footing of a given width (B) to that of a single isolated footing having the same width. The maximum value of (?) occurs at spaced between S/B = 0.5 to 1.0. The results have been compared with those available in the literature.INTRODUCTIONEvaluating the ultimate bearing capacity of rock masses is essential for important projects like dams and bridges. Closely spaced footings may occur on rock masses in the form of pier foundation and grillage footing. Close spacing lead to permit higher loads than can be bore by similar isolated footings. The ultimate bearing capacity of two interfering strip footings resting on cohesionless soil have been studied theoretically (Kumar, & Gosh, 2007; Kumar, & Kouzer, 2008; Stuart, 1962). Results revealed when two strip footings approached closely enough, failure zones affect each other and ultimate bearing capacity significantly increased."

It has been the custom in recent years to look upon Atlin as a worked-out placer camp. This is a conception, however, which is far from the real situation. The placer-gold deposits of Atlin are today, after thirty-one years of continuous working, a field well worth the attention of the mining world. It is true that the shallow diggings (the 'easy money') have been practically cleaned out, but although there have been perhaps ten millions, or more, in gold already taken from the district, there are still many more millions left in the creek beds . A conservative estimate of the gold still remaining in one creek alone, Spruce creek, for a long time known as the 'prospector's meal ticket', would place the amount at anywhere from fifteen to twenty million .dollars, and there are a number of other creeks that have never been thoroughly worked, and some only partially prospected. That the true situation is beginning to be recognized by those who are on the lookout for a profitable field for investment, is born out by the fact that, within the last few years, New York capital directed by Mr. Charles V. Bob, who is also responsible for the opening up of the Engineer mine, has installed on Pine creek, where the first discovery of gold in the district was made, one of the largest hydraulic mining plants on the continent, utilizing six miles of the old hydraulic ditch of the Discovery Mining and Power Company, and over two miles of pipe line. On Boulder creek, where already two millions have been taken out, the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company are on their third year of development work in opening up the unworked ground, while on Otter creek a newly organized French company have started a plan of development which will involve an expenditure in the neighbourhood of $200,000, and two or three years' work, before they can hope to find gold in paying quantities. It is probably safe to prophesy that placer gold will be produced in the Atlin district for the next fifty years

Despite the claims of energy efficiency and the considerable development that has gone into dramatically extending rolls? life and facilitating rolls? change-out, in the six years since the last SAG conference, only a few HPGR operations have entered the realm of mineral processing. Risk barriers to the take-up of new equipment or processes are: a massive increase in materials handling issues as well as in the number of pieces of equipment required, low total circuit potential energy savings, and similar or higher capital costs. An alternative route is to make use of the complementary strengths of the HPGR and SAG in hybrid circuits. Minimising materials handling issues, providing an ideal balanced feed to the AG or SAG mill, and improving controllability through shifting grinding load as the RoM feed changes, are all potential major advantages to this approach. Conceptual circuit layouts, based on real measured ore and equipment data, are presented here to illustrate the potential production upside, the reduction in operating costs and the reduction in the physical and energy footprints.
