The Archaeozoic Willyama Complex at Broken Hill has suffered several periods of deformation and metamorphism. New structural and petrological information together with that available from the literature gives a picture of the metamorphic evolution of the Barrier Ranges. Several epochs of metamorphism are recognized, and potassium-argon dating of minerals has been applied with limited success to the resolution of these epochs.INTRODUCTIONAdvancements in the mineral industry at Broken Hill over the past eighty years have been accompanied by a continual striving towards increased understanding of both the geological history of the Barrier Ranges and the environment of the Broken Hill ore deposits. However, although many detailed studies of selected localities and particular-aspects of Broken Hill geology have been carried out recently, the regional geology of the Barrier Ranges as a whole has received little attention from a petrological viewpoint since the pioneer investigations of Mawson (1912) and Browne (1922). There still remains a great need for regional surveys combining field studies of the habits, structures and outcrop relationships of the various rock types with laboratory investigations of their chemistry, mineralogy and microscopic ,fabrics. Recording observations arising from three brief visits to the Broken Hill area during 1959 and 1963 may stimulate further surveys.During one of these visits, the generosity of the Zinc Corporation Limited in providing field transport and geological guidance enabled the writer to collect material and study field relationships and appearance of the various rock types at numerous localities covering most of the Willyama outcrop. In January 1994, Macraes Mining Company started a new phase of exploration to find additional resources along strike and down dip of identified resources for a mill that was being expanded from 2.1 Mtpa to 3.2 Mtpa. At 30th June 1997 a total of 456,784 m in 3,627 holes had been drilled at the Macraes Gold Project with approximately 325,000 m in 2,100 holes drilled in the latest phase of exploration. This necessitated the construction of resource estimates on a more frequent basis and resulted in the formation of a resource modelling team, assisted by Snowden of Perth. Since April 1995, 14 separate resource estimates have been completed. At Macraes, resource estimates are built using Medsystem/Minesight software. The geological interpretation is converted into a set of three dimensional wireframed solid models which are used to code drillhole composites and blocks in a block model. The interpolation method of indicator kriging is used to interpolate grade into the blocks. Classification into measured, indicated and inferred categories is on the basis of geological confidence and drill spacing. The resource estimate is reconciled against grade control polygonal estimates on a bench by bench basis and on a monthly basis. Grade control estimates are reconciled monthly to mill production. For the period 30 June 1995 to 30 June 1997, the resource estimates have under predicted tonnes by 4% and grade by 1% to under predict ounces by 5% at a 0.5g/t cut off. At ROM sulphide cutoff grade, the models have over predicted tonnes by 5%, under predicted grade by 5% to over predict ounces by 1%.

Recent mapping at the Kelian epithermal gold deposit in East Kalimantan, Indonesia has delineated intrusive and extrusive-phreatomagmatic breccias, their magmatic roots, and late-stage endogenous domes of a maar-diatreme complex. The Kelian epithermal system is characterised by a wide variety of mineralised and unmineralised breccias, which include tectonic, hydrothermal, phreatic and phreatomagmatic varieties. Phreatomagmatic breccias and associated igneous rocks post-date early stage alteration and mineralisation, and pre-date main stage precious and base-metal mineralisation. This study emphasises the spatial, temporal and genetic links that have been drawn between diatremes and both epithermal and porphyry systems in volcano-plutonic arcs.

Although cyclones have been around in their current form since the early-1890s, there have been some exciting new developments, which have extended their efficiency/operation. These developments have taken place with both dense medium and classification cyclones. The more noteworthy developments are:Inlet designInlet design is the determining factor in classification cyclone capacity and efficiency. The recently developed ribbon inlet with patented pressure bulge has not only resulted in unbelievable increases in capacity, but also in efficiency. Sharpness of separation corresponding to an alpha value of greater than four has been achieved! Secondary offtakeOne of the factors leading to reduced cyclone efficiency is the presence of coarse particles in the cyclone overflow. The secondary offtake has been developed specifically to scavenge these particles from the cyclone overflow with great success. Water injectorThe other major factor resulting in reduced cyclone efficiency is the presence of misplaced fine particles in the cyclone underflow. The water injector, which has been around for many years in various forms, can reduce this short circuit fraction by up to 50 per cent. 3-in-1 cycloneThe 3-in-1 cyclone combines the inlet design, secondary off take and water injector into a single unit resulting in the most efficient classification cyclone available in the market. The RejectorTMIron ore has a high yield to underflow and traditional dense medium cyclones have always been spigot constrained. The Rejector TM is an exciting new development whereby the spigot capacity has been increased substantially. The application of the Rejector TM will result in fewer/smaller cyclones being required for a given duty resulting in efficiency gains and reductions in both operating and maintenance costs.

The current Stoilensky magnetite concentrator comprises a three-stage crushing circuit followed by three stages of ball milling, grinding and concentration to produce a magnetite concentrate with 66.5% iron (Fe). The plant is built in four lines, three lines having four mills and one line with five mills, to treat 32 Mt/y of ore and produce 13.9 Mt/y of concentrate.NLMK, the owner, is Russia’s third largest steel maker and while the ore from the Stoilensky Mining and Beneficiation Plant (SGOK) provides the bulk of their supply, they still must buy ore from external sources at world prices. A decision was taken to expand the SGOK operation to supply all the NLMK concentrate, including the production of pellets.To commence the expansion, high pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) were introduced as a fourth stage of crushing ahead of the first ball mill. This was a relatively low capital cost expansion and increased production by 12 to 15%, the cost being much less than an additional grinding line. The importance of this development was that earlier introductions of HPGRs in Russia had presented several problems so there was some reluctance to the initial concept. The even greater significance was that nearly every magnetite plant in Russia had a three-stage crushing circuit so the successful introduction of HPGRs was of interest to many operators.The design was developed by a team, consisting of Worley Parson, Mineralconsult and PiterGORproject (PGP), for the first four units to fit inside existing building structures. The first two units were commissioned in March 2016 and the next two units in May 2016, and production improved by over 12%. This paper discusses the social and economic impact of mining, and in particular goldmining, on New Zealand. The range of topics covered and their complexity has confined us in this paper to highlighting the main points of concern û a detailed report is under preparation. A major problem in undertaking this study was the lack of hard data on important environmental, economic and social issues and if there is to be effective planning in the area of natural resource use this situation must be rectified. The following conclusions were drawn: Goldmining was very important in shaping New Zealand's early social and economic development, providing wealth, employment and impetus for social change.Foreign investment and technology has been an essential element in New ZealandÆs economic development.Mining is a small industry at present by this must not be allowed to obscure its potential to broaden New Zealand's economic base and provide foreign exchange.With modern methods, development of mineral resources and environmental protection are not incompatible but certain unique and irreplaceable areas must be preserved.There are problems in evaluating mining and other projects because different groups hold different values, and arguments often hinge on the valuation of costs and benefits rather than the technical aspects of the analysis.Mineral exploration is a high risk business and the potential returns must be sufficient to attract capital if New Zealand's mineral resources are to be developed.A resurgence of goldmining will clearly have obvious benefits for Waihi but the local community must plan carefully for their future. New Zealand will also gain valuable foreign exchange required for higher levels of economic activity.

Low-enthalpy geothermal groundwater resources occur at relatively shallow depths in the Upper Cretaceous/1'ertiary sedimentary sequence in the on-shore Gippsland Basin. The main stratigraphic unit containing hot groundwater is the Latrobe Group. Groundwater temperatures in the range 30 to 70¦C have been recorded from depths between 500 and 1000 m. The hottest groundwater is in the Latrobe Valley and Lake Wellington depressions. Geothermal gradients in these areas range from less than 2¦C/100 m to over 10¦C/100 m (compared to a world average of about 3¦C/100 m). A number of theories have been advanced to explain the geothermal anomalies including exothermic reaction such as oxidation of coal, mixing with deeper, hotter groundwater and high geothermal fluxes along fault zones. Variations in geothermal gradients can also result from type and thickness (and hence thermal conductivities) of the sedimentary pile, depth to consolidated basement rocks, and influence of groundwater flow patterns including proximity to recharge zones. The hot groundwater in the Gippsland Basin has substantial potential as a source of energy for direct heat applications such as process heating, space and water heating for buildings, and agricultural and aquaculture. Geothermal energy has a number of environmental advantages over traditional sources of energy. It is clean, safe, causes minimal land disturbances and in most cases is naturally renewable.

In the mine of this study, cemented hydraulic backfill is placed under the form of a slurry at a percentage of solid by weight varying from 50 to 65 per cent. This slurry settles and cures in the stope. During this process an important amount of water must be drained from the scope. Field observations in the case studied here show that the geometry of the drains system has a significant impact on the drainage of the stopes. The mode of filling produces a backfill showing an evident stratification typical of a sedimentation process. In situ observations on this material show that this stratification translates into a very strong heterogeneity in the physical properties of the cemented backfill. This heterogeneity should affect the hydraulic conductivity of the backfill in the scope. In order to study this aspect, finite element simulations were performed. This paper presents the results of these simulations, where the impact of this stratification on hydraulic conductivity is related to the performance of the backfill drainage system for various geometry. This preliminary study is aimed at providing a better understanding of the role of the drains in the dewatering process of the backfilled stope in the case of this Mine.

A comprehensive Australia-wide survey of comminution energy consumption at copper and gold mines was presented by the authors at the 11th AusIMM Mill Operators’ Conference 2012. The database has been extended to include major overseas mines and used to benchmark comminution energy consumption across the industry. The mines included in this study now represent 15 and 24 per cent of the total global gold and copper production respectively, and almost all Australian production. The comminution energy intensity per unit of saleable metal has been presented in a graphical form similar to a cost curve used in economics. The graphical method has been developed to assess the competitive advantage that can be achieved by reducing comminution energy intensity.This benchmarking tool has been applied to three published case studies to assess its applicability. The first case study indicated that a large reduction in size-specific energy (kWh/t -75 µm) was achievable by converting standard semi-autogenous and ball mill circuits to include high pressure grinding roll and stirred mills. The second case study investigated the metal-specific energy reduction historically achieved by Bougainville with the addition of a preconcentration screening plant. The final case study was conducted by Barrick Gold Corporation and involved incremental efficiency upgrades at three of its gold mines: Cortez, Cowal and Mara North. The application of the benchmarking tool to each of these case studies successfully demonstrated the scale and competitive advantage that was achieved by reducing energy intensity.CITATION:Ballantyne, G R and Powell, M S, 2014. Cooling tower design has not advanced significantly in the last decade. Recognising this, Outotec has developed an innovative horizontal outflow cooling tower with increased performance compared to conventional design cooling towers.Outotec® Cooling Towers operate today in applications such as spent electrolyte cooling in zinc plants and for gypsum removal before copper solvent extraction. In such applications the use of this latest design has enabled increased production and lower maintenance costs in the downstream operations.In actual operations, the cooling performance has been confirmed at start-up, and has demonstrated that the towers operate in accordance with the CFD modelling. In the last three years these towers have proven themselves in commercial operation to operate with high efficiency and availability.This case study will outline comparative data, collected over two years at a site where both Outotec and conventional cooling towers are operating. The data shows that Outotec cooling towers require less than half the maintenance time of conventional cooling towers, when adjusted to a total solution flow basis. A close partnership approach with the site has allowed continual development, ensuring high availability and high performance.Experience with previous cooling tower installations guided the development of maintenance philosophies and procedures; this resulted in a design where maintenance intensive components were accessible from the top of the cooling tower. Northparkes Mines is located 27 km northwest of Parkes in central west New South Wales. The E26 deposit is the largest of all defined to-date in the area, containing over 50 per cent of Northparkes' resources and reserves. The combination of orebody geometry and geotechnical characteristics provide ideal conditions for the block cave method of mining of the first lift of the E26 deposit. Although this method of underground mining has been used for decades in other countries, E26 is the first example of its use in Australia. Copper-gold mineralisation at Northparkes is related to quartz monzonite porphyries that have intruded coeval Ordovician volcanics. Sulphide mineralisation (dominantly bornite and chalcopyrite) occurs principally within quartz veins associated with the porphyry intrusions. Veining and mineralisation occurs within both the porphyries and volcanics. To optimise the recovery of a resource within a block cave mine, a good understanding of the rock mass and ore flow characteristics is essential. These have a significant effect on the fragmentation size and range and on parameters such as the drawzone spacing, height of interaction zone and dilution entry. As ore within a cave column moves and mixes when material is extracted from below and beside it, the total reserve extracted is unique for a particular draw strategy/production history. Until recently, reserve estimates and production schedules were based on the application of a uniform dilution factor to the tabulated resource. However, given the complicated flow and mixing within the cave column, such a simplistic approach can produce erroneous results. Northparkes Mines purchased and sponsored the upgrading of a commercially available software package specifically developed for modelling removal of resource blocks under caving conditions. This Gemcom software package, PC-BC, has been used for mine planning, reserve reporting and production scheduling. Blocks within it resource block model are converted into a mineable reserve taking into account mixing and dilution during depletion of drawcolumns (by horizontal and vertical redistribution of insitu tonnage and metal). As PC-BC gives individual drawpoint reserves, it can be used during the planning stage to determine whether or not a drawpoint is economic. For E26 Lift I an optimal layout containing 130 drawpoints has been developed based on a nominal 14 m x 14 m drawpoint spacing and a 0.8 per cent equivalent copper (eCu) cut-off grade. Annual production schedules for the depletion of material above this layout are based on: I higher tonnage removal from higher grade drawpoints in the early years of production; and 2 drawpoint production rates proportional to the total tonnage of orr remaining in the drawcolumn up to the optimal height of draw tier subsequent years. The reserve is tabulated from the combined annual production schedules over the life of the lift. The pre-mining reserve for Lift I of E26 is 26.6 Mt at 1.43 per cent copper and 0.39 g/t gold, of which approximately 23.4 Mt will be extracted under caving conditions. By scaling down the annual production schedule, weekly drawpoint tonnage calls can be given for short-tern production scheduling.

During the past two years, a large number of creep tests has been carried out on electrolytic lead, special assay lead and ordinary refined (Port Pirie) lead. Some of these tests have already been reported.1§ In addition, an attempt has been made to estimate the influence of the individual elements present in small traces in Port Pirie lead. The present paper gives the results obtained when small additions are made to "U" lead of the composition shown in Table 1.(which has been used throughout these investigations during the past few years). The additions were silver, antimony, bismuth and zinc. The results of the addition of tellurium have already been communicated. This investigation was intended to run parallel with a similar one using electrolytic lead as a basis and adding one element at a time.Actually, the experiments using "U" lead have got rather ahead of the others. The important point has emerged, however, that the effect of a .given addition may be appreciably influenced by the presence of traces of other elements.In most of these tests, an initial stress of 500lb. per sq. in. has been used. THE following notes were accumulated during the years 1905 to 1911, when the writer was employed at Stannary Hills. The writer's duty took him over the underground workings daily. In odd moments the geology of the surrounding country was worked out. As the time for this purpose was limited, many interesting points had to be left, untouched. The faulting system in the mines was of such a puzzling character that it seemed as if the geology of the surrounding district might throw some light on it. Dr Jack, in 1907, reported on these mines for the shareholders, but came to no definite conclusions. Unfortunately, the writer has not had access to this report for many years. At the time of his visit the larger develbpments in the Ivanhoe and, Kitchenen orebodies (see Fig 1, B2) were only being opened up. Mr. H. Herman mentions Stannary Hills on p 320, Proceedings Aust Inst ME, new series, No 14, and on p 326 expresses the opinion that the pipe or joint-veins (as at Irvine bank and Stannary Hills) were more valuable to follow than lodes in the granite in that district.GEOLOGY OF DISTRICTThe main feature of the area mapped is a band of altered sedimentary rocks which carry no fossils. It is a mile wide, and consists of a hard band of greywackes 200 ·t ·300 yds. wide, flanked on both sides by contorted shales which become more micaceous as the granite-area to the east is approached. The strata have a general strike of N. 30° W., with a steep westerly dip. A large area of acid intrusive rocks occurs to the west of this band. For mining medium-hard materials on the surface, "Continuous Surface Miners" have been employed for some years. The latest generation surface miner extends the performance of this type of machine to the point where the same cost efficiencies can now be achieved in medium-hard materials as has been achieved in softer materials by machines such as the bucket wheel excavator. The paper explains briefly the technology of the Krupp Surface Miner (recently released to the market) and develops the costs of ownership and typical operating costs. Comparisons are made between a shoveLtruck system and Krupp Surface Miner (KSM) systems based on both truck and conveyor transport systems. Further benefits of mining with the KSM, such as environmental, selective mining and improved product reovery are discussed briefly. The equipment is now available to mine semi-hard materials (with compressive strengths up to 60MPa) on a continuous basis and reap the benefits which continuous systems can deliver. All new and existing open cut mines should review their costs with regard to this technology.

Over the entire life cycle of a mine, from early resource evaluation to the blasting of benches, the collection of geochemical data is crucial for the site operator, who must routinely and intensively drill and sample the orebody. This produces huge numbers of physical samples, in turn requiring significant cost and time for their preparation and assay. Moreover, despite best efforts, the sample recovery process is prone to error, which limits the quality of data.The pulsed neutron gamma technique has been used for decades in various industries, in particular oil logging, for its ability to provide direct identification and quantification of elemental concentrations. However, its implementation in logging tools for the mining sector is relatively recent. Built around the latest in technology for optimal spectrometric measurement, a commercial tool referred to as FastGrade™ 100 has been available for a few years and used with increasing success in the mining environment, specifically the iron ore industry, resulting in a reduction in the amount of collected samples. Relying on the physics of neutrons and gamma photons, both of which are particles that penetrate the surrounding bedrock through several tens of centimetres, such spectroscopy tools measure in real-time the composition of a much larger volume than the delimited volume of the drilled material traditionally used for geochemical mapping. Better statistics and reliability of the estimated composition increase the ability to properly and quickly measure drilled holes and allow the substituting of all or part of the sampling and assaying efforts by geochemical log data. Our paper focuses on this technology, known as pulsed fast and thermal neutron analysis (PFTNA). It reviews the main drivers for the design of such a logging tool and discusses how the fundamental characteristics of the technology, in terms of neutrons and gamma interactions, translate into interpretation of the analytical output.CITATION:Jeanneau, P, Flahaut, V and Maddever, R A M, 2017. A method is described for the rapid and effective production of polished section mounts of ore and mineral particulates to the standards required for automated image analysis. This requires mounting without segregation of particles by mass or density, and it is also preferable to avoid having particles in contact so that they can be recognised as individuals. To achieve this, the particle samples are first split to an appropriate degree in a rotary riffle, and the sub-sample mechanically diluted and thoroughly mixed with an inert filler of the same size range as the particles. Just sufficient epoxy resin is added to make the mixture fluid. During setting, the ore particles are mechanically supported by the inert filler particles, thus maintaining the particles in a random three-dimensional distribution. A rapid two-stage grinding process, based on the successive use of 600 mesh silicon carbide and 1200 mesh (10 um) corundum on cast iron plates, is followed by three stages of mechanical diamond polishing on cloth laps. Hand polishing is entirely avoided, as is the use of papers.

The extent of regional stratigraphic and structural geological mapping so far carried out in Australia is likely to be greatly overestimated by uncritical inspection of the latest authoritative geological map of the continent-that so ably compiled by the late Sir'T. W. Edgeworth David. Vast areas geologically coloured on this map are in fact known only from the most meagre field data, some of Which even include observations of distant views from which the so-called "geology" has been indicated in' reconnaissance reports.This applies to large areas in Cape York Peninsula; the plateau of Arnhem Land, and its margins except on the west where the Pine Creek mineral belt is better known; to the Desert Basin of Western Australia, practically the whole of the western half of the Northern Territory, much of east-central Western Australia, and northwestern New South Wales. Other vast areas are, more happily perhaps, left blank. It is true that prospecting parties have, at various times and with varying degrees of thoroughness, traversedparts of these little-known regions, often, however, in the search for gold or the.more obvious types of metalliferous mineral deposits and, furthermore, too often without leaving any written account of their examination, or with very sketchy details supplied. Unpublished geological surveys also cover some parts of these regions, but, on the whole, the picture we can draw of the regional deployment of rock masses in Australia is far less full than even David's map, with its obvious blanks, presents to us.Lest the practical mineral seeker among us should be inclined to place too much reliance on the prospecting to which I have referred.as giving him a straight hint of what country to keep out of, we may point to the recent discovery of a major sedimentary basin in the east KimberllilYs on which Dr. Teichert will have more to say. And that there are new metalliferous mineral deposits to be foundin parts of these little-known areas no one can doubt, for, after all, new discoveries are made from time to time in areas so well-known as the Victorian gold-fields. I take it then that regional geological mapping is a necessary concomitant of the further development of Australia's mineral resources-but I am not of the school that places it first on the list of priorities, and furthermore I believe that there can be a royal road to regional mapping-an inspired approach based on knowledge already gained and led to fruition by field surveys in key areas, by which there may be obtained a result giving a significantly close approach to actuality with only a fraction of the work that would be required for detailed field surveys on a systematic basis. I believe that a policy of rapid reconnaissance of such a type should be adhered to, especially in view of present deficiencies in numbers of geologists available for all purposes in Australia. The details that must eventually be sought can, I believe, be filled in later as the whole country becomes more developed and amenable to detailed surveys.

The conclusions reached by den Tex after a study of the fabric of some rocks from Broken Hill have been used to support the epigenetic hypothesis for the origin of the ore, first by Edwards (1959, p. 70) and then by Stillwell (1962, p. 131) in his criticism of Segnit's (1961) views. Den Tex claimed that the petrofabric study provided "independent evidence that the ore, at least in its present form, post-dates all events of a diastrophic nature in the area concerned".Repetition of this claim by Edwards and by Stillwell and the lack of any criticism of den Tex's work for more than three years implies its general acceptance by geologists in Australia. Therefore it appears necessary to examine parts of den Tex's paper in detail to show that his, conclusions are unwarranted. The major weaknesses in his study are that1. the petrofabric study was inadequate to warrant any major conclusions, and2. the petrofabric data allow alternative conclusions.Den Tex made a single visit to the field, collected six carefully selected specimens and presented quartz and· biotitepetrofabric diagrams for two specimens, quartz-diagrams alone for three more and included three diagrams of the orientation of c-axes and fractures in one specimen.
