The JORC Code lists the three core principles of Transparency, Materiality and Competency as fundamental to how mineral estimates are publicly reported. But where the principles of Transparency and Materiality can be considered conscious choices underlying decisions at the point of disclosure, Competency is a self-declared position statement based on one’s confidence to defend a technical position (as well as the functional pre-requisites of institute membership and a minimum of five years relevant experience).Developing competency in the mining industry is an ad hoc process, generally left to the individual to chart through a process of osmosis from personal work experiences that lead to a sufficient level of confidence. Companies that actually present professional development programs leading to reporting competency are rare. And even once a person has followed a program, there is no specific outline of what constitutes technical competence.No doubt, there are persons signing off on mineral statements who would benefit from developing and/or updating their technical skills (they may not even be aware of unmastered skills). Equally, there are technical practitioners who are sufficiently competent, but lack the confidence to step up and publicly report their estimates. Confidence in one’s own abilities plays a significant role in deciding when one is ready for the responsibility of submitting mineral estimates for public consumption. In addition, a person’s organisational support, such as the availability of suitable peers and professional development programs, and opportunities to learn from a variety of technical projects contribute to developing relevant experience. Increased exposure in both technical breadth and depth enhance confidence in one’s ability and competence.The mining industry provides numerous opportunities through direct and indirect means to develop the competency underpinning a stable reporting code. This paper examines a theoretical framework and associated processes that could be used to examine how the mining industry, companies and individuals collaborate to develop this vague principle of competency. This paper seeks to initiate research with the express purpose of enabling more effective and efficient development of reporting competency in our industry.

The high-shear colloidal mixer is generally recognised as the most efficient method of mixing cement based grouts. Only recently however has this technology been applied to the production of cemented rockfill (CRF) for use in underground mines in North America. Traditionally, paddle type mixers have been used to produce the cement based slurries required for the preparation of CRF. While considerable success has been achieved with these mixers, tremendous advantages are attained with the colloidal mixer. The combined effect of the highly efficient mixing action and the ability to mix low water/solids ratios, allows for reductions in the cement content for a given strength requirement. Cement can also be replaced by cheaper fillers such as flyash, resulting in further cost savings. Although large-scale dedicated CRF batching plants are typical, there is a growing need for mobile plants capable of operating anywhere underground. The compact size and rapid batching speed of high-shear colloidal mixers has allowed them to be incorporated into skid mounted systems capable of producing and discharging cement based slurries onto rockfill aggregate for the production of CRF. In many cases run-of-mine development waste can be used as CRF aggregate with these slurry plants thereby reducing the cost of waste rock removal. These relatively low cost portable plants have now allowed several mines to economically recover isolated pillars and realise positive returns on their investment.

Structural geological modelling is a process which results in a 3D computer model that represents the essence of the geological and structural understanding of an area and is presented in a way that is directly useable, typically by internal customer groups. BHP Iron Ore operates a number of open cut iron ore mines in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia. The largest mine is the Mt Whaleback Mine located at Newman close to the southern margin of the Pilbara Craton. The structurally complex Mt Whaleback Mine is the largest metalliferous single pit open cut mine in Australia with over 1.6 billion tonnes of original iron ore resource. Additional to the Mt Whaleback Mine, a number of satellite open cut iron ore mines are operated by BHP Iron Ore (BHPIO) in the Newman area. BHPIO also operates the Yarrie mine approximately 400 km north of Newman at the northern edge of the Pilbara Craton Most of the BHPIO mines are located in the Archean- Proterozoic Hamersley Province that overlies the Archean granite-greenstone terrain of the Pilbara Craton. The orebodies are considered to be the result of supergene enrichment of the approximately 2.5 Ga Brockman Iron Formation and the slightly older Marra Mamba Iron Formation. Folding represents the most prevalent and penetrative structural element in the Newman area. Four folding phases have been identified regionally (Fj, F2, F3, F5), while a more local folding deformation (F4) developed mainly in the Mt Whaleback and Orebody 29 mine area. A northeast trending, southeast dipping, 45 km long, high angle, normal fault zone, the Whaleback Fault Zone, cuts through the Mt Whaleback mine resulting in an approximately 1400 in gap in stratigraphy. Additionally, two large, low angle, normal faults, the East Footwall Fault and the Central Fault, are present at the Mt Whaleback Mine. During the formation of supergene orebodies, up to 40 - 45 per cent volume loss occurred resulting in local non-tectonic deformation in the orebodies.

In the mining industry, crusher-related incidents have led to 15 reported deaths in Australia, New Zealand, and the USA between 1998 and 2007 (NSW Government Resources Regulator, 2024). The majority of these fatalities occurred during routine crusher maintenance tasks. A survey of quarry and mine site maintenance staff was completed to ascertain what they thought of such safety device to understand if beneficial and if so reasons if unused. Overall, findings show, staff perceived risks differently, cost, familiarity, device awareness and not front of mind, influenced adoption. This underscores the importance of asking the right questions involving maintenance and safety staff to lead to more proactive risk assessment.

Separation of fine and coarse particles as separate streams prior to flotation, and their differential treatments, could substantially increase recovery and reduce collector consumption. A series of simulations was carried out to quantify the benefits from plant scale implementation of such a treatment at the Ispat Inland flotation circuit (Minorca mine). The study involved detailed plant sampling and sample analysis to generate the data needed for simulation studies. Samples were taken from all the streams from flotation feed to final concentrate, as well as cell lips and cell pulp. Sampling was repeated for the second ore blend that was processed by the plant during different periods of a year. Sample analysis involved sieve analysis and size by size chemical analysis for total iron, magnetic iron and silica. Raw data were mass balanced, and flow rates within the circuit were calculated. Mass balanced data were used to calculate model parameters representing the existing conditions. Usim Pac was used for both mass balancing and simulation studies. Available pilot and bench scale data were utilised to define the modified flow sheet and expected performance. The simulated flow sheet included classification of flotation circuit feed by hydrocyclones. While the coarse fraction followed the existing flow sheet, the fine fraction was sent to a magnetic separator. Magnetic and rougher flotation concentrates were combined to form the final concentrate. Two simulations for each blend were carried out. The first one assumed that there would be no change in size by size kinetic behaviours of both gangue and magnetite due to this modification. This was named as the worst case scenario, in which particles had a longer residence time due to reduced flow rates within the flotation cells. The second scenario anticipated that there would be an increase in recoveries of gangue and magnetite going into froth launder due to more efficient use of collector in absence of fines. Results showed that pre-classification of flotation feed could improve the flotation recovery by 0.3 - 0.5 per cent, with the major benefit being significant reduction (40 - 60 per cent) in the amount of collector used.

The truly scientific method in the study of such questions at the present day is the reverse of that which was followed in the early days of geology, when after the observation of a few isolated facts, some great geological mind was led to a general theory, and humbler followers were only too apt to do mild violence to nature in order to make her facts conform to it tt accumulates year after year a multitude of facts of patient observation, supported by studies with the microscope, and in the laboratory, avoiding general theories, and only making such deductions in regard to locftl conditions as are supported by the overwhelming evidence of facts. The" Indicator" veins, the great barren lode masses, a later fissure than all of these (" B "), and the auriferous lodes of last series cleaving the wrinkled terraces and the older lodes also are" Indicator" veins. B is a later formed vein that leaves no " depositions" behind. ooe are fragments of the" most ancient'' lode wreckage. Db are the auriferous lodes and correspond with those lodes, also whose auriferous characters are not result of secondary impregnations.

The case study is based on the largest ore deposit at Mt. Lyell; the Prince Lyell deposit, comprising a regular lensoid mass of dissemina- ted and vein pyrite-chalcopyrite mineralisation. Reserve estimation employs conventional techniques, based on diamond drill hole and relevant development sampling data. Probable ore reserves are estimated using the contouring (isoline) method an longitudinal projections for ore thickness and accumulation (m %Cu) at a '0.8% Cu' cutoff. Final stope and pillar res- erve estimates (proved ore) are derived from designed ring tonnages and contoured accumula- tion for individual mining units, following more intensive sampling. Systematic grade control procedures have been adopted and individual stopes and pillars reconciled against mill production. The proved ore estimates have been found to com- pare favourably with the reconciled production.

In the last decade, the use of advanced implicit modelling software/algorithms in mineral resource workflows has become a best practice in the mining industry. In most cases, these workflows can easily replicate the level of detail of explicitly modelled geometries, even for very complex deposits. These techniques are flexible and can produce fast results since software is responsible for generating 3D surfaces and solids based on geological and interpretation data. Nevertheless, depending on how unique and complex some deposits are, intense manual editing and input are required to honour the geological context and produce the desired outcome. The current geological modelling workflow at George Fisher Mine (GFM) is based on the semi-automatic built-in tool that generates stratigraphic sequences (stacked lithology layers) based on logging and mapping data. This tool (stratigraphic sequence from Leapfrog Geo™) works for the majority of areas in the mine but fails to capture observed mineralisation pinch-outs in operational areas and at extrapolated boundaries of the deposit. These pinch-outs have the potential to negatively impact grade forecasts if not resolved manually. Using built-in software tools only, the alternative for a more accurate model is to generate each individual layer and adding tens of thousands of manual interpretation points to honour pinch-outs (based on the amount of existing drilling in the mine and number of layers). This approach would require an estimated minimum of two to four years of a full-time employee (FTE) to be exhaustively completed. This study presents an automated approach to generate pinch-out points using a set of Python scripts that only take a few minutes to run. The newly generated points are then combined into the commercial software workflow as interpretation points, honouring observed pinch-outs. The remarkable time difference between approaches removes chance of manual errors and allows mine geologists to spend valuable time in validation and testing of scenarios, ensuring they are more representative of the deposit’s geology.

It is well known that the ability to influence project value reduces significantly as planning progresses and decisions regarding project parameters are made. However, at the prefeasibility stage in particular, where one of the main aims should be to evaluate a wide range of options in order to select the best for more detailed further study, there is often a reluctance to spend the time and money needed to do this rigorously. This paper demonstrates, by a number of case study examples, how significant increases in value may be obtained by fully evaluating the combinations of alternatives for various project design parameters, including (though not limited to) mining methods, haulage methods, mining rates, processing methods and rates, sequencing of mining, and cut-off grades, with changes and upgrades over time where applicable. The additional value unlocked is typically orders of magnitude greater than the additional cost of the more comprehensive study. The dangers of misuse of simplistic sensitivity analyses and failure to identify how strategies might change in response to changes in external factors are also illustrated, and the importance of selecting the best ægrade descriptorÆ is discussed.

In the time since the first trials in the mid-1980s, the Rare-Earth Magnetic Separators (REMS) are presently (year 2001) found in many heavy mineral sands plants around the world. Both the roll and the drum type are used from ilmenite concentration to cleaning high-purity zircon products. Chromium-bearing materials are removed from ilmenite more selectively than with electromagnetic separators. Greater flexibility and higher grades in ilmenite circuits are achieved. Cleaner rutile and zircon products, even with respect to levels of radioactive materials, are the result of superior magnetic force optimisation. Tailings from roaster plants can be reprocessed effectively, which is encouraging some operators to look at replacing old equipment in order to process roasted material plant feed or implement use of the new generation drum separators in new plants. Wet separation of ilmenite by using powerful wet REMS drum separators is now a possibility. This may be an alternative to at least a portion of the Wet High-Intensity Magnetic Separators (WHIMS) process for ilmenite preconcentration. A dry plant process flowsheet can often be modified by displacing a portion of high-tension separators with new high-temperature tolerant REMS.

The automated geology interpretation (AGI) tool has been developed in BHP Billiton to automate stratigraphy logging of drill holes, using any available quantitative data sets. At present, AGI is set-up to utilise geochemistry and mineralogy from infrared spectroscopic data to predict stratigraphy. Once the AGI tool is calibrated, results show that the tool is capable of automatically defining stratigraphy across all of the deposit types, encountered by BHP Billiton Iron Ore in the north-west of Western Australia. Accuracy of AGI at predicting stratigraphy is on average better than 75 per cent, with average accuracies exceeding 85 per cent for some deposit types. The AGI tool can deliver fast, accurate, consistent and objective geological interpretations.AGI is currently being implemented in BHP Billiton Iron Ore Exploration to streamline the drill hole logging process and allow geologists to spend less time defining stratigraphy at the drill hole level and more time investigating stratigraphy in 3D. Design of embankment dams often requires seismic analyses, or an assessment of earthquakeinduced ground and dam movements. There are a large number of cases where earthquakes have triggered sliding and lateral spreading of embankments, resulting in excessive crest settlements. In some instances, liquefaction and embankment failure has occurred resulting in loss of containment. Hence, evaluation of the effects of earthquakes on embankment dams is a critical design aspect. This paper discusses the methods and the results of a seismic liquefaction assessment and deformation analyses of a tailings dam. The tailings dam consists of a perimeter earth core rockfill starter dam which has been raised using upstream construction methods. The embankment raises (formed by an upstream clay blanket and an all-in rockfill body) are constructed over the impounded tailings, which are potentially liquefiable. Extensive field and laboratory tests were undertaken to assess the liquefaction potential of the tailings, and also determine the material properties required for seismic stability and deformation analyses. Numerical modelling of seismic liquefaction and deformation was carried out using FLAC (Itasca 2016) to predict the magnitude and spatial variation of deformations that may lead to an uncontrolled release of tailings. Primarily based on a parametric assessment of UBCSand and Finn-Byrne constitutive models, the results of the analyses are presented and compared for evaluation.

The paper briefly describes the mining system employed on Western Deep Levels for the past 20 years. The negative aspects which gave rise to a new mechanized method of mining are discussed. The sequence of events leading from the Mine's first attempt at trackless mining in 1980 to the present day in-stope project is presented. The original justification for this project and the in-stope trackless mining method is described in detail. The results to date are evaluated and the original rationale for going in-stope trackless mining questioned. A totally new mining philosophy for Western Deep Levels, whereby major geological disturbances are left in situ and longwalls re-established and mined using trackless mining machinery is described. The economics of this mining method are discussed. Trackless mining machinery can also be put to good use within the conventional longwalls in a new method of mining using Load Haul Dumpers (LHD) in reef drives. When the instope trackless mining project commenced in 1983, it was stated that expansion to any significant degree with diesel powered vehicles could be ruled out and electrically driven alternatives would have to be developed. This issue is discussed and the Mine's decision to expand with diesel powered vehicles explained. Finally, the extent to which trackless mining is likely to be seen in the 1990 s at Western Deep Levels is discussed.

To increase the efficiency and improve the quality of diamond drilling at Olympic Dam, mine geologists have adapted and modified common practices in order to overcome the challenges imposed by such a unique environment. Mine geologists have to take into account both the complex geology during the diamond drill hole design phase, as well as incorporating diamond drilling into the larger-scale scheduling process already employed at Olympic Dam. This study seeks to explore how such modifications have evolved over time.The geology of Olympic Dam influences the design process of diamond drill holes, particularly due to the variation of lithology and alteration, as well as the presence of magnetite and major structures within the orebody. Exclusion zones are used to manage interactions with existing and planned mining activities, and their size is dependent upon the geology of the area. Specific deviation checks are used to monitor the deviation of diamond drill holes with respect to these?zones.The highly interactive environment of Olympic Dam requires unique planning for diamond drilling, resulting in the production and implementation of both long- and short-term schedules. Long-term schedules are targeted at determining drilling locations and ensuring drilling is completed prior to stope planning, while short-term schedules aid in enabling access to ensure timely set-up of drill sites. Estimated drilling rates, determined by expected lithologies and historical data, feed into the short-term schedule to assist in managing the operation and minimising the downtime of diamond drill rigs. A mine geologist is appointed as a diamond drill coordinator to organise and manage diamond drilling at a scheduling and operational level, streamlining the entire process.Analysis of historical data shows a strong correlation between implementation of the aforementioned practices and improved drilling rates. This study shows the importance of adapting universal tasks to particular environments and circumstances. Mine geologists at Olympic Dam continue to acquire knowledge to further improve the modified drilling practices as operational requirements, production pressures and economic factors change.CITATION:Taylor, J and Dubowik, A, 2014. Ion exchange (IX) as a primary production technique has been applied commercially since the 1950s; its application in the uranium industry continues to be widespread and is utilised to a lesser degree in the gold industry. The majority of ion exchange applications, outside of gold and uranium, have primarily been for secondary metal recovery and impurity removal. Newer developments in the application of ion exchange, as well as changes in regulatory requirements, are bringing about the wider use of ion exchange as a primary production technique not only for high value metals such as uranium, platinum group metals (PGM), refractory metals and rare earths, but also looking at base metals such as nickel and copper. The ability to build lower-cost, safer, less polluting processing plants with smaller footprints is driving a greater interest in IX, with the main competitors remaining solvent extraction and carbon-in-pulp/leach. The current emphasis within the mining industry to reduce the cost of production has stimulated interest in the field of maintenance and operational reliability of capital intensive mining equipuent. The failure consequences of these machines have major safety and economic implications for a mine operator. The reliability centered maintenance (RCM) approach has been found cost effective for equipment maintenance and for achieving high level system perform- ance by many organizations such as airline, military, chemical, process and manufac- turing industries. In this paper an attempt has been made to describe in brief the basic concepts of a RCM approach, the methods of RCM analysis and its cost effectiveness for maintenance of equipment. Since this approach is comparatively new for the mining industry, suitable examples are given to illustrate the case.

ALTHOUGH the mineral Stannite (Cu2S, FeS, SnS2 , also known as "bell 'metal" ore, tin pyrites, etc.) is found in various parts of the world, in only three iocalities has development proved it to exist in sufficient quantity to warrant the erection of treatment plants. Two of those mines are in New South Wales and one is an Tasmania. The writer will deal with the latter-the Conah mine, Zeehan, Tasmania, it being the most important and extensive occurrence so far worked. The Conah mine was first worked by a Tasmanian company for silver-Iead, and was fairly remunerative until the zone of secondary enrichment was passed through, when the lodes became too poor for further exploitation. During the time that the line was thus operated the stannite lode was discovered. It occurs in a graphitic slate, which, in common with the slates and spilites of the Zeehan field, is probably underlain by the stanniferous granite which outcrops two miles to the west. The Conah stannite lode is older than the galena lodes of the district, being faulted by one of the latter. Near the surface the lode was very rich.Shipments were sent out assaying 150 oz. of silver per ton, 20% copper, and 18% tin. An .apparently homogeneous sample of stannite, analyzed by the writer for the Tasmanian Geological survey, gave the following results:

"Flotation of nickel sulfide ores are generally constrained by nickel grade and impurity concentrations (notably magnesium and arsenic) in the product delivered to smelters. Being a physical separation process, flotation recoveries and grades are limited by the grade recovery curve of a particular operation, where increasing product grades are invariably associated with lower recoveries. Impurities put further pressure on this relationship, as removal of impurities from the final concentrate is almost always associated with nickel losses.Western Areas Ltd are developing a proposed expansion to its Cosmic Boy concentrator to treat an impurity stream, that is high in nickel and would otherwise report to tails. Through the use of BioHeap® technology Western Areas aims to recover the nickel and discard the arsenic to tailings. This expansion will consist of a biohydrometallurgical plant that leaches the nickel arsenic minerals, removing the arsenic as a stable iron/arsenic hydroxide, while recovering the nickel as a high-grade nickel sulfide product (at approximately 50 per cent nickel). This can then be blended with final concentrate to improve nickel grades and recoveries, while simultaneously reducing impurity levels or used to produce high value products like nickel sulfate.The introduction of a small microbial leach plant may be beneficial to base metal concentrators constrained by impurities or grade.Citation:Fewings, J, Seet, S, McCredden, T and Fitzmaurice, C, 2016. One of the main energy efficiency opportunities identified from the majority of mine site energy audits is to optimize the comminution circuit to reduce energy consumption through improved throughput and product size distribution. Typical analysis reviews comminution process efficiency/inefficiency i.e. utilization of grinding mills, process bottlenecks and product vs. target size, to identify instances of overgrinding or undergrinding. From this, it is possible to establish the potential improvement that could be gained through formal plant optimization and what the optimization program would entail. It can also sometimes reveal immediate opportunities for process improvement. This paper presents steps that can be taken to optimize the efficiency of comminution circuits.

The Golden Cross mine is a Joint Venture between Coeur Gold New Zealand Limited, as Manager, and Viking Mining Limited The mine is targeting Zero Lost Time Accidents as a goal. The Golden Cross operation produces gold and silver from both underground and open pit. The mine is based on an epithermal gold-silver deposit. Treatment of ore is on a campaign basis for each ore type (ie underground or open pit). Milling is conventional SAG Mill and Ball Mill grinding circuit followed by carbon in pulp recovery of gold and silver. All tailing materials are treated through the Cyanisorb process to reduce cyanide levels prior to being discharged into the tailings dam.
