The calibrated thermal IR data of part of Cambay Basin is used to determine surface temperatures and to detect the heat flow. Applying the conductive heat flow continuation technique, the three dimensional configuration of the hydrocarbon bearing reservoir was defined. The zone delineated by the present study coincides with the oil-bearing structures inferred by seismic survey. The results indicate the possibility of the technique as an effective tool in hydrocarbon exploration.

A promising source for the extraction of rare metals and REEs in Russia is the eudialyte ores of the Lovozero deposit, which do not contain active uranium components. The eudialyte ore reserves of the Lovozero Massif are considered virtually unlimited and therefore have the potential to become a primary source of a number of rare and rare earth metals. The goal of this study was to comprehensively examine the effect of the parameters of high-power nanosecond electromagnetic pulses (HPEMP) and dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) on the leaching performance of eudialyte concentrate and the selective separation of zirconium and REEs from productive solutions. Using scanning electron microscopy and infrared spectroscopy, the mechanism behind the intensification of acidic dissolution of eudialyte as a result of pretreatment with energy impacts was described. During the HPEMP treatment, weakening and destruction of the eudialyte surface was observed, which at the substructural level is expressed in the deformation and local destruction of Si10O27, Si9MO30 resulting in formation of microcracks. During the DBD treatment, the formation of characteristic defects was observed in the form of imprints of dielectric breakdown microchannels and individual mineral fragments. Pretreatment of eudialyte concentrate using HPEMP made it possible to increase the recovery of zirconium into the pregnant solution of leaching by 3.4–4.3 per cent (from 86.6 per cent to 90.9 per cent) and by 4.1 per cent (from 86.6 per cent to 90.6 per cent) when using DBD. The increase in the total recovery of REEs was 1.2–1.8 per cent (from 87.7 per cent to 89.2 per cent). The effect of pH values, solution temperature, initial concentrations of valuable components on the successive recovery performance of zirconium and REEs from the pregnant solutions nitric from the acid leaching of eudialyte concentrate by chemical precipitation was examined. The possibility of selective separation of the zirconium product and rare earth elements with a zirconium recovery of 99.95 per cent and a REE recovery of 87.5 per cent was established. REE loss with the zirconium product was 8.0 per cent and 4.5 per cent with the spent pregnant solution.

The mine site is situated south east of Port Hedland in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. A detailed engineering design was undertaken for six irregularly shaped waste rock dumps at the site. The design was undertaken to ensure long-term stability of the dumps and optimise material movements for closure construction. The Watershed Erosion Prediction Program (WEPP) and SIBERIA landscape evolution modelling was undertaken for the landforms using regional and site-specific material characteristics to provide an indication of the maximum allowable slopes and corresponding slope lengths for long-term stability.The majority of the waste materials present in the waste rock dumps are considered likely to be subgrade banded iron formation (BIF) and chert, which is generally competent material. The presence of a large number of dolerite dyke swarms indicates appreciable volumes of dolerite were produced as waste from the pits. Geological records also indicate that the dolerite is logged as being heavily kaolinised in the geological logging, hence kaolinite is very likely to be present within the waste dumps on-site. This material has an elevated risk of being highly erodible/dispersive. Clays and shales are also likely to be present in the dumps and are considered to be less competent material (relative to the BIF/chert).The final design configuration of the largest existing ‘unplanned’ waste rock stockpile is compared to a hypothetical continuous ten degree outer embankment alternative. This paper will present a brief description of the alternatives for closure of three waste dumps in close proximity to each other and how the detailed design based on site-specific materials and conditions compare to an alternative approach blankly assuming that most materials will be erosionally stable at less than ten degrees.CITATION:Kemp, A, Taylor, I?and Hancock,?G,?2014. Simulations of complex physical phenomena, such as hurricanes and fluid flow around space vehicles, can now be effectively explored using modem visualisation techniques which have been developed to examine the results of numerical modelling using supercomputers. These techniques are also being applied extensively in medical investigations, including viewing the interior of the human brain. We have now applied these same techniques to the visualisation of gold deposits.Grade control in open pit gold mining operations may involve the collection of at least half a million samples in each mine. Extensive drilling programs also accompany the early reserve evaluation stages and exploration in advance of mining. Maximum utilisation of these very large amounts of information requires an ability to integrate, examine and present large three-dimensional data sets in order to be able to derive and effectively communicate information on grade distribution and geological controls.

The data referred to here consists of project reports, manufacturer's equipment literature and papers concerning almost every aspect of the excavation process. Why is it then, that many projects that employ full face tunnel boring machines (TBMs), on average perform significantly less than the peak performances reported in this industry?

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Numerous Fe-Cu-Au-rare earth element (REE) deposits have been identified within the Palaeoproterozoic Dongchuan Group of the Kangdian region of SW China. Geochronologic and geochemical data of the dolerite dykes and other volcanic rocks reveal extensional activity occurred about 1.7 Ga called ‘Kunyang Rifting’. The Kangdian region underwent variable degrees of extension, meaning that breakup in the central part of this region occurred earlier than in the north. Research on microphysiography, isotopic geochemistry and inclusions of the Yinachang typical Fe-Cu-Au-REE deposits suggest that the dominant mineralisation fluid is high-temperature, high-salinity magma fluid, containing alkalic components, volatile phase and Cu-Au. Metasomatism and mixing between this magmatic fluid and carbonaceous wall rock and meteoric water caused the precipitation of Fe, REEs and Cu-Au. A chalcopyrite Re-Os age from the Yinachang deposit obtained during this study is some 50–100 million years younger than the timing of emplacement of the deeply sourced Haizi and Dongchuan dolerites. The Yinachang deposit is a typical iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG)-type deposit, and the presence of this and other deposits in the Kangdian region indicates that the region hosts an intraplate extension-related IOCG system within the western edge of the Yangtze Block, China.CITATION:Hou, L, Ding, J, Zhang, J R, Zhu, S B, Wu, S Y and Peng, H J, 2015. From the viewpoint of mechanical efficiency, charges should be fully coupled and, upon detonation, should just fail to break the rock in compression. But because mining thrives on its cost-effectiveness rather than its mechan- ical efficiency, the explosive which generates maximum energy per $ should generally be used, even though the mechanical efficiency of this explosive's detonation products may be sub- optimum. Wherever possible, each charge should have a length:diameter ratio of about 20 or more and should shoot to a concavely biplanar free face that is both parallel and reasonably close to the blasthole. Success in obtaining parallel effective faces often demands the drilling of angled blastholes and, hence, will require intensified research and development efforts by drilling manufacturers, especially where hard strong rocks are encountered. Blastholes should be drilled on equilateral triangular grids and fired in a Vl or shallower V-type sequence using inter-row delays which ensure that good pro- gressive relief of burden is achieved. The conventional method of calculating Se/Be values (on the basis of planar effective faces) is often invalid.

The Goodall gold mine is located 30 km east of Adelaide River, within the Pine Creek 1:250 000 map sheet, at 8 525 000 mN: 750 000 mE, on the AMG grid. The first gold was poured in April 1988 and the mine closed in September 1993, having produced 228 400 ounces of gold from 4.095 million tons of ore, at a head grade of 1.99 g/t. Oxide and primary ore was mined from one large open cut and low grade oxide ore from three smaller pits. The gold mineralisation was discovered in 1981 by means of a helicopter borne rock chip sampling survey, which delineated 13 discrete anomalies. Systematic grid sampling of rock chips outlined an area of 1300 m by 300 m within the 2.0 g/t contour. Over 7500 m of costeaning was used to delineate the A and B-Pod mineralised areas. Geochemical soil sampling played only a minor role in the discovery and geophysics none at all. By the end of 1984, 40 diamond drill holes had been completed and a resource of 3.63 million tonnes at 3.0 g/t calculated. In January 1985, Western Mining Corporation Ltd became a joint venture partner and funded exploration to cam a 60 per cent interest. Additional drilling led to a feasibility study in 1987, based on a Measured and Indicated resource of 4.25 million tonnes at a grade of 2.35 g/t. The host rocks are quartzo-feldspathic wacke and interbedded phyllitic siltstone, of the Proterozoic Burrell Creek formation. The main zone of gold mineralisation, A-Pod, occurs in a sub-vertical vein array, up to 50 m wide and 800 m in length, of quartz and sulphide veins (5-20 mm wide), It is parallel to and on the east limb of an upright, north plunging anticline. Five types of veining have been recognised, with the bulk of the gold mineralisation associated with quartz-pyrite-arsenopyrite and chlorite-quartz-pyrite veins. The gold occurs as particles, from 1-20 micron, as inclusions and along fractures in pyrite and arsenopyrite and to a limited extent in chlorite. The mineralisation is epigenetic and structurally controlled by fractures developed during an earlier folding event. The gold is assumed to have been derived from the underlying sediments of the Koolpin Formation by hydrothermal fluids emanating from the deep seated northern margin of the Cullen Batholith. Precipitation of gold may have been controlled by variations in temperature and pressure.

Sensor-based sorting methods to remove waste or for upgrading ore prior to downstream metallurgical processing is becoming more prevalent for mining operations. X-ray transmission (XRT) sorters are a popular choice for mineral processing plants since they can sort a wide variety of minerals. XRT sorters pass high intensity X-rays through particles to generate images of varying greyscale, based on their effective atomic density. The ore sorter then mechanically separates the particles using algorithms based on the images. A popular test currently used to evaluate the amenability of the ore to XRT sorting is to pass the particles through the sorter and obtain the greyscale images showing mineralogical differences. This test provides information on the mineralogical heterogeneity between ore particles for their separation. However, it does not provide an understanding of the actual mineralogical composition of the ore or information pertaining to which other minerals may respond in a similar manner, nor does it provide liberation information. This paper describes a test that combines high resolution X-ray micro Computer Tomography (CT) combined with QEMScan to obtain information about amenability of ore to XRT sorting and to obtain valuable information that can streamline metallurgical testwork programs. This test also provides information relating to particle thickness and associated X-ray attenuation coefficients, desired mineral presence and mineralogical information relating to associated minerals and clays to assist with developing sorting algorithms. Combining the CT and QEMScan can address many limitations of the current method to determine whether XRT sorting technology is appropriate for particular ores. Mineralogy information from QEMScan can identify incidences of; mineral encapsulation, problematic clays, detrimental minerals as well as calibrate the greyscale values of CT data. Additional 3D CT imaging carried out on cores provides spatial information of the minerals within the ore and mineral grades.

As part of a large AMIRA project, an on-line moisture meter was installed at two mine sites in Central Queensland. This project investigated the factors which control the moisture content of coarse (>0.5 mm) coal from the centrifuges used in conventional coal preparation plants. It was placed immediately after the first centrifuge to isolate the factors pertaining to one machine and its feed.The meter was found to be accurate and precise when compared with manual and mechanical sampling methods. The Grubbs estimator technique indicated that its precision is better than 0.3 per cent at the 95 per cent confidence limit.It has been identified that:1. the variability of the measured moisture contents of coarse coal can be described by normal distributions. Standard deviations of about 0.6 per cent are common; and2. the treatment of the coarse coal on the drain and rinse screens immediately prior to the centrifuge can affect the final moisture content.

Magmatic-related low sulphidation hydrothermal ore systems at plate margins exhibit distinct spatial and temporal zonations which can be used to aid mineral exploration and development. Low sulphidation systems at all crustal levels exhibit the same paragenetic sequence of events: early breccia formation, followed by quartz - secondary feldspar - sericite/illite veining, then mineralisation, and final argillic overprint. This sequence of events is interpreted to reflect the initial emplacement of melts at high crustal levels, and the progressive cooling of that melt and release of magmatic constituents into a circulating hydrothermal system.

The Century zinc-lead-silver deposit has a geological resource of 118 million tonnes averaging 10.2% zinc, 1.5% lead and 36 g/t silver. It lies approximately 250 km NNW of Mt Isa in NW Queensland, Australia, and is hosted by middle Proterozoic age siltstones and shales of the Lawn Hill Formation. Within the orebody, most mineralisation occurs selectively within black shale units as fine grained sphalerite and galena lamellae with minor pyrite and siderite. The black shale units are separated by weakly mineralised sideritic siltstone horizons. The deposit is unmetamorphosed and only weakly deformed, displaying excellent lateral stratigraphic and grade continuity.

Alluvial gold is an ideal exploration tracer to bedrock source and indicator of bedrock mineralisation style because (i) gold occurs in a wide range of deposit types, (ii) primary composition is sensitive to style of mineralisation, and (iii) it is a heavy resistate mineral that is readily preserved and easily sampled. In regional exploration of the Central Ranges of Irian Jaya, alluvial gold mineralogy has been applied to maximise the information return from panned concentrate sampling and to focus exploration effort. Primary gold is a solid solution of Au+Ag¦Cu¦Hg, ¦ trace Pd, Te, and Sb. In general Ag¦Hg increase and Cu decreases with inferred decreasing temperature of formation, and gold from particular mineralisation styles has signature compositions that can be used as indicators of bedrock mineralisation type. Furthermore, the abundance of alluvial gold is an indicator of the economic potential of a catchment. The convergent continental-oceanic plate geology of the Central Ranges is conducive to a wide range of mineralisation styles. Mineralogy of gold in ophiolite, skarn, porphyry, mesothermal vein and possible VHMS environments is characterised from alluvial and bedrock samples, and the use of gold mineralogy in prospecting at regional scale through prospect definition to drilling is demonstrated.

Blast vibration control and assessment techniques have been developed which supplement traditional charge mass scaling methods. The improved techniques, which can be used to predict air and ground vibration levels at the planning stage, and to assist in the control of blasting operations, have reduced the level of operating risk concerning blast vibration. In addition to such factors as charge mass, distance and blast vibration levels, these additional techniques take account of orientation of the blasting face, topographic shielding, wavefront reinforcement, and meteorological conditions. They have assisted in compliance with specified blast vibration levels for environmental licence and mining lease conditions, the reduction of blast vibration nuisance to residents in the area surrounding a mine, and control of building and rock structure response in adjacent areas on the mine lease area.

There is today widespread concern about the future of the mining industry. In attempting to understand the underlying causes the paper probes in some detail, the long term structural changes affecting growth of metal demand and the development of excess mineral supply capacity. This examination reveals an industry characterised by an unfavourable combination of high barriers to exit and low entry barriers. While rising entry barriers are expected to herald some improvement in the profitability of mining over the next decade, this adjustment is likely to be slow and will require a more economically rational assessment of the industry by corporations and governments Alike.

MERLIN, the Queensland Department of Minerals and Energy's corporate geographic information system, provides ready access to all georeferenced data held by the department. Its aim is to provide a consistent, current, statewide coverage of timely information to assist in tenures management, exploration targeting and competing land use decision-making. Initially developed in 1988 and under continual enhancement since then, its functionality is the result of on-going close consultation with a wide range of departmental clients and potential users. A true geographic information system, MERLIN maintains both graphical data with linked textual information on a wide range of features of interest. The proprietary software products Arclnfo and Oracle are used to hold the graphics and attribute information respectively. Access to information is provided by a specially designed graphical user interface programed in-house. Hardcopy output of graphics displays including related attribute data as well as detailed reports of textual information can be retrieved at any departmental office. MERLIN is a network of computer systems which link each of the Department's regional offices and head office in Brisbane. The current state of exploration and mining is maintained by departmental officers processing tenure applications, transactions and dealings directly into the system. Data entered at regional offices are transferred overnight to head office to up-date central records and maintain a currency of data statewide as at the close of business the previous day. Through MERLIN the Department of Minerals and Energy now offers a much streamlined tenures management service as well as access to information about past exploration and mining, Queensland's mineral and energy occurrences and resources, and up-to-date information on the state's geology including maps, boreholes, geophysical surveys and field observations. In the future, this Geographic Information system will be invaluable to the mining industry in the development of mining projects.

Coal/gas outbursts were one of the rather difficult safety problems faced in the coal mines of this Country, with coal fields characterized by frequent disturbances of folds, faults and pinch-offs. With average mining depth about 500m below surface, several such accidents occurred with up to 500 tonnes of coal outburst. In recent years, after a series of improving countermeasures had been undertaken, gas outburst accidents had been greatly decreased. The characteristics of gas outbursts in Taiwan coal mines include relating to coal petrography, mining depth and the other deformation forces. All these have been investigated, trying to determine the parameter of outbursts under natural conditions. The preventive countermeasures include predicting tests, de-stressing boring in coal seams, the emergency procedures during outbursts and certain improving options.

The authors have previously described a piezoelectric-based system to measure the dynamic pressure during actual detonation in the field. This technique is used in a water hammer test set-up where a donor detonator is fired first, with the pressure sensor and an acceptor electronic detonator placed underwater in a water tank, and maintained at a fixed distance away from the donor detonator. The functioning and timing of the acceptor detonator are captured using a customised microcontroller board called the water hammer timer. Using such water hammer testing, the effect of dynamic pressure was studied as a function of the magnitude of pressure during the electronic timing countdown. BHP's newest colliery on the Southern Coalfield Is Tower Colliery. It is situated near Wilton some 60 kms south west from Sydney. It commenced its operations in 1978 and since that time has experienced considerable roof problems. In its eight years of operations, production has been 936 687 tonnes to December 1985. To a certain extent this is a reflection of the ground control r,,b1cros present in the colliery. paper out Iines the signif mt g,, logical features that are known to exist in the colliery and their influence on roadway development. Faulting has hindered the mine's development and an igneous intrusion has had outhursting associated with it. The prevailing roof rock has also had an impact on the roadway conditions. The paper will look at intersection deformation in present workings. Extensometers have been installed in these areas and provide measurements to verify visual observations. The results show a significant increase in roof movement as the roadway is developed from a single heading, to a T-intersection and then Into a four-way intersection.
