The paper reviews some of the aerodynamic factors in the blast furnace process and outlines the areas requiring further study. Detailed discussion is given to the pressure drop in both the dry and the wet zone of the furnace and an optimum coke size is suggested for minimum pressure drop. The effect of various charging sequences on the distribution of the gas in the furnace shaft is treated and notes on stack injection included. Flow phenomena limiting blast furnace output and the influence of aerodynamics on the movement of the bed in the furnace are outlined and these include fluidisation, flooding and raceway formation. A mention is made of alkalis, sulphur, zinc, softening, and oil injection and the mixed effect in blast furnace economics of increased tuyere velocity as problems requiring further research.

Coal seam methane (CSM) is an æunconventionalÆ gas resource that is becoming an important energy resource for Australia, especially along the eastern seaboard. It has been conventionally believed that methane in high rank coals was exclusively derived from thermocatalytic processes during decomposition of coal at elevated temperatures. However, recent re-interpretations of gas composition and isotope data have indicated that microbial methane generation may be one of the main processes responsible for the accumulation of commercially producible methane in some coals. In low rank (æbrownÆ and sub-bituminous) coals, methane (CH4) is mainly generated by microbial activity at low temperatures. The amount of this biogenic gas generated and accumulated in low rank coals depends largely on the rate of burial and depth. Most low rank coals are æunder-saturatedÆ with respect to their maximum gas sorption capacity. In contrast, high rank coals may be highly saturated due to extensive gas generation from both thermogenic and secondary biogenic processes. However, in basins where secondary biogenic gases have not replenished the thermogenic gas lost during basin uplift, the coals will be æunder-saturatedÆ. In many basins around the world, high CSM producing zones appear to contain secondary biogenic CH4 generated by microbes transported in meteoric water recharge through permeable coal seams. Biogenic CH4 generation requires the activity of a consortium of anaerobic respiring microorganisms, fermentative bacteria and acetogenic bacteria to break down complex organic molecules to simpler molecules having one or two carbon atoms, which enables methanogenic archaea to generate CH4. The two main methanogenic pathways in the generation of secondary biogenic gas from coal are aceticlastic reaction and carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction. In eastern Australian coals CO2 reduction appears to be the main process. The types of microbes that are directly involved in these processes are unknown because they have not yet been isolated from the coal seams. The CSIRO is currently investigating the processes of biogenic gas generation in Australian coals. Potential may exist to introduce appropriate microbes into deep coal seams to enhance methane saturation levels, gas sorption capacities and permeabilities.

Numerical simulation by a finite element computer code has bee* used to identify key stages in the initiation of confined bulk explosive by cast primers. The simulations have been verified by comparison with experimental field measurements of shock arrival time versus distance above the primer for a relatively sensitive emulsion doped with ammonium nitrate prills. Further simulations were performed examining the effect of primer size in a relatively insensitive blend of ANFO and emulsion. Immediately above the primers, changes in shock velocity in the explosive were caused by the interactions between shocks originating from different surfaces of the cylindrical primers. At a distance up the explosive column corresponding to about one to two borehole diameters, the arrival of shock reflections off the borehole walls caused a sudden acceleration up to the confined steady state detonation velocity. The simulations reproduced experimental observations that primer size has only a weak effect on changes of shock velocity with distance for confined explosives. However, it was predicted that primer size has a strong influence on the intensity and duration of the pressure pulses that bulk explosive send into the rock surrounding the primer region.

Woodlawn Mines began underground operations in 1986. At the time of going underground it was envisaged that there would be no 'contract' payment to the underground employees. This was a relatively unique step to make, especially as most major underground mines in Australia relied heavily on the contract system to motivate their workforce. (Obviously with varying degrees of success.) Woodlawn faced the task of motivating their employees through a multi-skilled system with a great emphasis on leadership and a genuine care for their employees. The 'proof of the pudding' is that Woodlawn has not lost any time over industrial issues since beginning underground operations in 1986. To achieve success in any operation the organisation must not only be advanced in its management principles but also be prepared to be innovative in the way it deals with physical problems, ie ground control, equipment selection and maintenance. Difficult ground conditions at Woodlawn have necessitated the deployment of two Cabolt Jumbos and the construction of cost-effective shotcrete systems. The shotcrete system now being built has been tested in a prototype form and is proving to be a safe and simple way to manage weak, low stress friable ground. Although the ground at Woodlawn has low stress component by virtue of the fact the ore can have a density of 4.5dm3, cable dowelling has become a necessity. The two cable dowel jumbos install high quality reinforced cables. The pressure of 'production' means that these machines must be consistently available for use and the training of maintenance personnel and operators ensures that a maximum of cable dowels can be installed over any given time span. In any modem mine ventilation is a primary concern and the major area of concern comes from the vehicles themselves. In our recent replacement for the standard 'Toro' loader, three engine options were considered. A relative newcomer to underground mining was accepted. The Detroit 60 series (DDEC) engine came with a great reputation and has lived up to this. The engine has an electronic management system that reduces particulates to a hardly visible minimum, provides great amounts of engine power and reduces fuel consumption by approximately 45 per cent. The operational benefits of such an engine are worth sharing through this conference.

Golden Crown Mine is a narrow vein gold mine producing 75000 tpa. Production has been predominantly by shrink stoping using hand held machine and airleg. Bogging from these stopes is done with Toro 150 LHD units.Previously the standard development method consisted of developing a sill drive, a footwall drive and millholes every 7 m. This meant that for every metre of ore development, 2 m of waste development was required.

As well as breaking and moving rock, blast energy sets up a seismic wave in the ground which can cause significant damage to rock structures and buildings and disturbance to human occupants. This seismic ground vibration is potentially most damaging when its dominant frequency coincides with the resonant frequency of a structure, leading to high amplification factors between the input ground vibration and the resulting structural response. This paper outlines methods of identifying the resonant frequency of structures. It also describes a practical numerical method for the modification of blast designs to reduce the ground vibration energy in critical frequency ranges. The method is illustrated with two recent case studies.

There are a number of examples of how environmental factors have been integrated into the water management aspects of mining projects. The Kingston Lignite project in South Australia, Pine Creek Gold Mine in the Northern Territory, gravel and sand extraction from the Nepean River flood plain near Penrith, and the Olympic Dam Project have all illustrated that consideration of environmental factors can be integrated with project developments, with beneficial outcomes for both the project and the environment.Each of the above cases demonstrated an individually significant environmental issue, directly related to the interaction between the proposed project and its environment. In each case, careful research and an integrated approach to the problem resulted in a solution that gave both maximum protection to the environment and optimum consideration to the economic feasibility and success of the proposed project.The solutions ranged from alternative mining methods and improved waste and water management through to the ultimate objective of converting a mining project into a major water-based recreation source. These examples have set a precedent that will contribute ignificantly to the successful development of future projects.

BHP-Utah Coal Limited's Peak Downs Mine is located in Cen- tral Queensland, approximately 200 km south west of Mackay. The annual raw coal production of the mine is over 8 million tpa, requiring the removal of about 40 million cubic metres of prime overburden. This is achieved through the use of five large draglines. The large depths of overburden (up to 55 metres) encountered over half the strike length of the mine enables cast blasting to be carried out in conjunction with draglines employ- ing the chopping method of digging. The objective of cast blast- ing is to use explosive energy to move as much material directly into spoil as possible. The additional costs of drilling and blast- ing are offset by reducing dragline rehandle. Two factors which are of primary importance to the design of cast blasts are initiation control and material velocity. High speed motion picture photography is a powerful diagnostic tool to quantify these aspects of blasting (Winzer, Montenyohl and Ritter, 1979; Chiappetta et al., 1983; Anon., 1983). The objec- tives of such analysis are to: 1. Determine the burden velocity, 2. Determine the time to initial movement (that is, the inter- val between a face hole firing and the initial movement of the burden), 3. Check the accuracy of the initiation sequence. BHP Central Research Laboratories (CRL) and Peak Downs Mine monitored a cast blast in the mine's Winchester Pit on 18 August, 1988. The objectives of this exercise were to: 1. Quantify current cast blast performance, providing a base case for comparison with modified blast design. 2. Compare two orientations of angled holes within the blast. 3. Assess the effectiveness of cast blasting utilising an air-deck. 4. Check blast timing with respect to burden movement times.

A model based on non-steady state has been developed for dissolution and diffusion in porous ore particles. Results from the particular model have been incorporated, as a rate term, into a global, heap-scale model based on a plug flow reactor at unsteady state. The global model can be used to consider leaching by aqueous-phase reagents in equilibrium with a gas- phase component, such as oxygen gas, as well as strictly aqueous-phase reagents, such as cyanide. The flexibility of the model even allows predic- tion of the outcomes of using reagent sideflow injection in large heaps. Data from column leaching tests are compared to the model, and their relationship is discussed.

Problems of the effect of the number of tuyeres and their parameters on the uni- formity of gas distribution are invest- igated with the use of the authors' devel- oped mathematical model of the movement of gases and materials in the blast furnace. It is shown that the improvement of uni- formity of gas distribution with an increase in the number of tuyeres has a damping character. An analysis of the errors of the specified assumptions of the hypothesis concerning the potentiality of the gas movement in the bed is carried out. It is established that the potential approach model gives good results with the determination of the discharge of gas and its stress field, but is not useful for the calculation of local velocities of gas in the raceway. The results of trials of calculation investigations of the dynamics of form- ation of the raceway and the voidageòfield in beds of burden materials are presented in the concluding part of the paper.

Welcome to this 13th Congress of The Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions. It is twenty one years since The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy last hosted this congress and it is a privilege and a pleasure for The AusIMM to have that responsibility once more. The theme of this congress "The Twenty-First Century - Mining for Mankind" stimulates many thoughts. The first thought that it generates in me relates to the reference to the 21st Century. We are still 14 years away from it and already consideration of the beginning of the next millenium is becoming something of a cliche. If we feel like that about it now, how will we feel at the 14th Congress of the CMMI in 1990, or the 15th in 1994 or the 16th in 1998? If we do all the crystal ball gazing about the 21st Century this week, those poor devils in the 1990s will in fact have nothing to talk about. Of course that is not the case. This is a very appropriate time for those of us concerned with mining and metallurgy to contemplate the next century. Fourteen years is about the extent of forward planning necessary in the mining business. I sometimes feel that most people do not take seriously the need for long range planning in our industry. Politicians, investment fund managers, and others under severe short-term pressure to perform in our hyperactive world may nod in apparent appreciation of our long term plans but their actions in the interests of expediency often betray-them.

The opportunities offered by an increasingly volatile world invite the international consultant or engineering services contractor to broaden attitudes, diversify interests, expand capabilities, retain and develop specialist skills and base judgements upon sound principles and solid experience. The wide-ranging scope of this review reflects such a change but the topics of discussion are not intended to be exhaustive or to detract from many other current developments.The subject of environmental protection, effluent control and pollution prevention is a primary consideration in the application of many mineral processing technologies but is not covered here. There is an array of developments relating to noxious gas emissions and toxic wastes and the paramount importance of this matter justifies comprehensive conferences dedicated solely to the application of suitable measures. This review concentrates therefore on the main stream processing techniques for the primary recovery of values.

In this paper, it is briefly introduced that China's Ordovician limestone confined-water menaces coal mining and Ordovician water is prevented and cured to secure the safety of coal mining. The theory of "Down-Three-Zones" is presented on the basis of research and practice in recent ten years. The concept of "Down-Three-Zones" of floor water-eruption is described clearly. Finally, the principle and method of applying the theory of "Down-Three-Zones" are discussed. 1. An Introduction of Damage: China is rich in coal resources. The conditions of coal field geology are quite complicated. There is an area of two million square kilometre of Karst limestone in nine million six thousand square kilometres of territory. The resources of underground water are rather plentiful, but this menaces coal exploration. Sixty percent of coal mines in China are damaged by limestone confined-water in different scales, particularly coal mines located the Carboniferous-Permian coal fields of the Ordovician limestone distribution area of Northern China. Because there is the 500-800 metre thickness of Ordovocian limestone and the well developed Karst containsl plentiful water, Karst water can have more than 100 Kg/cm pressure. Limestone aquifers have only distances of several metres or several decade metres to coal seam, Karst water can enter the aquituge and even the coal seam, large eruptions often occur. For example, a mine of 3 million ton production capacity had an eruption of 2053 cubic metres per minute. This is the largest confined-water eruption which has brought enormous economic damage and threatened the safe production of coal mining. Therefore, the prevention and cure of Ordovician water has immense advantage to the development of the coal industry. There are several decades experience in the prevention of Ordovician water-eruption in China. The prevention of Ordovician water-eruption has two kinds of plans. 1) dewatering and depression: it refers to dewatering of aquifers as roofs of seam and depression of aquifers as floors of seam in mining areas. 2) comprehensive prevention under the condition of having water pressure in aquiters. Due to enormous water, electricity, equipment and lots of other factors, the former isn't used extensively, the latter tits to China's actual conditions and is used widely. The Hellyer deposit, hosted in the Cambrian Mt Read Volcanics, displays features typical of volcanogenic massive sulphide orebodies. These include a well developed stringer zone, metal zonation within the orebody, a polymict volcaniclastic sequence flanking the deposit and a hangingwall alteration plume in overlying basaltic pillow laves.Mapping and core logging is very detailed in order to extract as much data as possible from the deposit and its host rocks. A geological log suitable for direct computer input was adopted shortly after the deposit's discovery.

One of the problems with mining projects is the setting of the design criteria that will best match the requirements. Normally this is expressed in economic terms but can be other factors. With massive orebodies these problems are often compounded by the general lack of distinct mining boundaries. A technique using evaluation surfaces was developed at Palabora for the underground mine design. This technique has subsequently been applied on several other mining projects to assist in the determination of the design criteria. This paper discusses the method, illustrated by some of the results of these studies.

An alternative process for desorbing and recovering metals from activated carbon has been developed, and is the subject of several patent applications by Micron Research (W.A.) The system uses the principle of conditioning the carbon in a strong alkaline cyanide solution followed by distillation desorption in a fractionating column, using the carbon as the column packing and methanol as the desorbing agent. The system offers the following advantages : (a) The processes of desorption, methanol recovery and reactivation are all carried out in a single column with the carbon itself acting as the column packing. No other desorption plant items or fractional distillation equipment are required. (b) The metal values are concentrated into the water content of the carbon and no other water is used except as condenser coolant. This produces very high grade gold silver solutions which give high current efficiencies in the electrowinning step. These high gold concentrations allow almost complete separation of gold and silver from copper in the electrolytic cell. (c) The process is completed to a tailing assay of less than 200g Au/tonne carbon in 15 - 20 hours allowing turn around of carbon batches on a daily Basis.

The coal seam gas (CSG) industry is expanding rapidly in the Surat and Bowen basins. CSG production involves pumping water from the coal seams to release the gas adsorbed to coal particles. The reduction in water pressure in the coal seams will cause some reductions in water pressure in overlying and underlying aquifers because there will always be some interconnectivity between the formations. The Surat Basin is a sub-basin of the Great Artesian Basin, which contains aquifers of high economic, environmental and cultural value. The Condamine Alluvium is also an important water resource, which overlies parts of the eastern margin of the Surat Basin.Under the Queensland (Qld) regulatory framework, an area of intensive CSG development involving multiple CSG operators can be declared to be a cumulative management area. For such areas the Office of Groundwater Impact Assessment develops assessments of future impacts on aquifer water pressures and develops and manages arrangements. The results are published in underground water impact reports.The Surat underground water impact report (QWC, 2012) was approved in December 2012. The volumetric distribution of valuable mineral, or phase, within a set of particles is called the liberation distribution. To optimise a mineral processing plant it is necessary to know the liberation distribution in most of the streams, especially those adjacent to separation devices. Possibly the most common method of analysing ore particles is to section sets of similarly-sized particles. However, the observed sections can appear liberated even if the particle is composite. This means that the 'apparent' liberation distribution can be very different to the 'actual' liberation distribution. This discrepancy is called stereological error. One must then somehow estimate the actual liberation distribution using the apparent liberation distribution. This problem is called the liberation distribution problem and its solution is the subject of this paper. The solution is based on a sorting algorithm which uses geometric probability equations. These equations are based on the assumption that sectioning is isotropic and uniform. Apart from these assumptions the equations are completely independent of particle shape or texture. The algorithm is verified by numerical simulation and experimental methods. For the numerical simulations the correspondence between the actual and estimated liberation distributions is excellent. For the experimental methods, the agreement is not as good and appears to be due to experimental errors.
