Cable bolts are being used more extensively by the mining industry for many different rock reinforcement applications. The configuration of these bolts has evolved over the last 20 years to meet the immediate needs of industry at the particular time. Most improvements to date have focussed on increasing the mechanical performance with little attention given to issues such as ease of handling, matching response to that of the rock mass or corrosion protection. Ultrastrand has been designed and being developed with this broad perspective in mind so that it will satisfy the ground reinforcement needs of today's and tomorrow's mining industry.Laboratory tests on Ultrastrand prototypes have confirmed that mechanical performance is superior or equivalent to Standard and Birdcage Strand respectively. Preliminary discussions have been held with an installation equipment manufacturer with a view to conducting a trial at a mine site by early-1992.

The main components of face design are the power loader, face conveyor and powered support system and the interaction of these components determines the effectiveness of strata control. A major influence upon the interrelationship of this equipment is the geological environment, of which seam thickness appears to play an important role. Recent thick seam experience indicates a significantly different characteristic behaviour pattern from that observed in thin seams The structural integrity of the face wall is particularly influenced by seam discontinuities such as natural joint planes and mining-induced fractures in the yield zone ahead of the faceline. In addition, the presence of stone bands or dirt partings in the seam offers interfaces for uncontrolled release of blocky material. Some case study experience at British collieries provides a comparison with performance data at a specific location, that highlights the importance of coal face layout and design.

The object of this paper is to present a brief overview of applications of radioisotopes in mineral processing. The emphasis is towards on-line applications, and is to present the broad picture rather than become involved in the details of particular applications. For a more detailed and comprehensive coverage, the reader is referred to the International Atomic Energy Agency International Symposium on Nuclear Techniques in Exploration, Extraction and Pro- cessing of Mineral Resources, held in Vienna 7-11 March, 1977. Because of space limitations here, we have inmost cases restricted coverage to those applications of radioisotopes within the direct experience of Amdel and Australian research bodies. Radioisotopes spontaneously emit energy in tiie Form of a and S particles, and electromag- netic radiation. The electromagnetic radiation is generally referred to as y-radiation when it originates from the nucleus, and X-radiation when originating from the electrons orbiting the nucleus. X-ray and y-ray energies overlap, with X-rays extending from a few electron volts (%') up to about 100 keV. Gamma rays in the useful energy range extend from a few keV up to .feV.

Properties of surface films on chalcopyrite and pyrite differ due to variations in the mechanism of oxidation of the two minerals. In the case of chalcopyrite the first step in the oxidation is the release of iron as ferric ions, which hydrolyse depending upon conditions prevalent in solution. The iron oxide/hydroxide layer formed by hydrolysis of ferric ions is quite porous and easily detachable from the surface of chalcopyrite. When the surface oxide layer is detached a sulphur-rich layer is exposed making chalcopyrite hydrophobic. The thickness and properties of the sulphur-rich layer determine its flotation response, both in the absence and presence of collectors. In the case of pyrite, on the other hand, iron is released as ferrous ions which require much higher pHs to hydrolyse. These ions remain adsorbed on the surface of pyrite making the surface hydrophilic. When the iron species are complexed with chelating agents such as ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid, pyrite was hydrophobic. Siderite forms in the presence of carbonate ions, which might be present in several flotation systems. Siderite nucleated on isolated sites at the surface. The presence of such a precipitate is likely to influence the interaction of pyrite with various reagents thereby altering its flotation behavior. To determine the mechanism of oxidation, kinetics of oxidation of chalcopyrite and pyrite was studied using several electrochemical techniques, namely, cyclic voltammetry, polarisation and impedance spectroscopy. Floatability of the minerals was investigated by measurement of contact angles on mineral electrodes and by Halimond tube flotation. Impedance spectroscopy was especially useful for estimating various properties of surface film for both the minerals. Properties such as charge transfer resistance, porosity, and capacitances of the surface films on the two minerals are compared under several conditions of oxidation. These properties were found to be a strong function of the rate and the extent of oxidation.

Intorducing the hypothesis that the cause ,òi spontaneous combustion of coal is depending un the accumulation of heat produced by its oxidation, the authors derived the equation expressing the temperature change in a heap i fine coal. To solve the equation, thermal conductivity, specific heat and rate of heat ,eneration of fine coal (-48 mesh) were measured at various temperatures in the range _'0-65¦C. The equation was solved numerically and the volume of fine coal which would ignite spontaneously was estimated as the function of ambient temperature. Using 170 Kg of fine coal, everal experiments for confirmation were conducted. At the ambient temperatures of 60¦C nd 50¦C, coal began to fire spontaneously brut 00 and 110 hours later respectively. The importance which matters of social welfare and environmental quality have assumed recently is the underlying theme of this paper. Demands for infrastructure reflect the change in emphasis from economic and technological development to those issues which affect the total well-being of the community. To put the importance of social change in perspective, examples are cited and a theme is developed which underlines the relevance of changes in public attitude and in government policies on mineral exploitation and related development and on the regimen of associated infrastructure sought. Planning on a long term or strategic basis and on a broad scale is put forward as an effective means of identifying changing social attitudes for the purpose of framing government and corporate policies. The main objective of sulphide flotation in a cassiterite concentrator is to remove sulphide minerals (pyrite, pyrrhotite and sometimes chalcopyrite) from the ore prior to gravity concentration. Tin losses in the sulphide flotation stage account for a significant proportion of the total tin loss. separate studies of the sulphide flotation circuits of Renison Ltd and Cleveland Tin Ltd were conducted to investigate reasons for the tin losses. Sampling surveys were conducted in the rougher-scavenger and also the regrind-cleaner sections of both plants. In both plants, the rougher circuits recover excessive quantities of liberated cassiterite, while recovery of the desired composite cassiterite-sulphide fraction is low. The regrind mills are successful in liberating the composite cassiterite in the rougher concentrate, but at the expense of increasing the proportion of very fine tin mineral. The cleaner circuits recover between 40 and 60% of the cassiterite received, and this is all lost.

As the worldÆs population and global standard of living increase, the role of metals in the economy will not diminish in the 21st century, despite substitution and dematerialisation trends. Industrial Ecology is an emerging science that attempts to bring together physical, biological and social scientists and develop the tools for good management of the planet in the long run. In engineering terms, Industrial Ecology is defined as the reconfiguring of industrial activities with full knowledge of their environmental consequences. Production and use of materials must take into account the needs of both market and environment. Dispersive uses of metals will be phased out, as is being done with lead in gasoline, and post-use recovery of materials and energy will increase. This will result in an advantage for metallurgical processes that can use as feed materials concentrates as well as metal scrap and waste streams, such as bath smelting processes and slag resistance electric furnaces. The paper also discusses how metal extraction technologies, developed in the 20th century to provide essential materials to humanity, can be applied for the benefit of both mankind and environment in the 21st century.

The Maddingley brown coal seam at Bacchus Marsh, where mined and bored, tends on the whole to a higher content of volatile matter than the Latrobe Valley brown coals, and this masks the presence of lignitic or earthy coal bands in the bore core analyses. Visits to the Lucifer Open Cut, at Bacchus Marsh, during 1948, revealed, however, a banded condition in the coal seam, as shown in Fig. 1. This banding showed in a face that had been exposed for a considerable period of time, permitting partial drying out and oxidation of the surface coal. The bands consist of different coal types, ,comparable with those found in the Yallournand Latrobe brown coal seams(l).The' light coloured bands in Fig. 1 consist of a buff to light-brown earthy coal of low specific gravity, that closely resembles the pollen coal, that occurs, as similar thin bands in the Yallourn and Latrobe seams. The 40 ft. of coal above the uppermost of these light coloured bands dries out on exposure to a black, closely cracked surface, composed of small dice-like fragments of a lustrous vitrain-like substance, and in every respect resembles the lignitic coal bands of the Yallourn and Latrobe seams.The coal between and below the light-coloured bands develops fewer and more widely spaced shrinkage cracks on drying out, and remains brown in colour and earthy in appearance, resembling the earthy coal of the Yallourn and Latrobe seams.Representative samples were cut of these coals, taking care to exclude surface coal, and analyses were made of them by the Metropolitan Gas Company, through the kindness of Dr. R. Ashton Mining Limited is the operator of two wholly-owned gold mine/mill complexes at Laverton and Leonora. In addition, Ashton owns 43% of the Bardoc Joint Venture mine/mill complex, which is operated by Aberfoyle Pty Limited. All three of these operations are located in the Eastern Goldfields region of Western Australia (Figure 1). At Laverton, milling capacity is in the order of 1 million tonnes per year in 3 mills (Duketon 200,000 tpa, Cork Tree Well 650,000 tpa and Craiggiemore 150,000 tpa). These mills service a distance of 80 km, from Baneygo in the north to Craiggiemore in the south. Mineral tenements cover a 150 km long stretch of a series of sub-parallel mineralised structures. At Leonora, the Harbour Lights mill is designed to treat 750,000 tpa of sulphide ore, and has treated oxide ores at an annualised rate of over 1 million tonnes/year. The mill is supported by several tenement blocks that lie within a 50 km trucking radius of the mill. The most important of these is the Mertondale tenement block, which covers approximately 25km of the Mertondale Shear Zone.

Whereas traditionally, stable isotope research has been directed towards resource exploration and development, it is finding more frequentapplications in helping to assess the impacts of resource utilization upon ecosystems. Among the many pursuits, two themes are evident:(1) tracing the transport and conversions of pollutants in the environment and(2) better understanding of the interplay among environmental receptors, e.g. food web studies. Stable isotope data are used primarily to identify the presence of pollutants in the environment and with a few exceptions, the consequence of their presence must be assessed by other techniques. Increasing attention has been given to the isotopic composition of humans with many potential applications in areas such as paleodiets, medicine, and criminology. In this brief overview examples are used from the Pacific Rim to illustrate the above concepts. Stable isotope data will undoubtedly play an increasing role in multi-disciplinary research in the Pacific Rim. However, consideration should be given to more effective strategies, e.g. networking, for pursuing large scale problems such as long range circulation of pollutants.

The major copper orebody at Mount Isa is being extracted at a rate of four million tonnes per year. The method used requires an equivalent rate of back filling with (mainly) cemented fill. There were three major incentives for developing this mining system. The first was the prospect of high ultimate recovery of the orebody. The target is 100% recovery. Also the proposed stoping layout appeared to offer significant advantages in development and production costs. Finally, extensive subsidence above the northern end of the orebody could have disturbed permanent surface installations and jeopardised a possible future open cut. The full implications of this ambitious strategy were not apparent in the early years. Now, after twelve years of production the benefits are being realised and they can be weighed against the costs. Probably the most interesting result which comes from this analysis is the significance of cutoff grades and dilution factors in balancing mining and filling rates.

Narrow vein tabular orebodies are prone to mining induced seismicity. The Tasmania Mine is a complex example of a seismically active tabular orebody, where the contrasting material properties of the host strata and of the orebody itself, serve to exacerbate the seismic response. Analysis of a continuous record of seismicity over a period of seven years has provided significant insight into the fundamental mechanics of the rock mass. Understanding seismicity to permit safe extraction of the orebody has been enhanced by instrumentation of rock mass behaviour in response to mining and mining induced seismicity. It is the purpose of this paper to explore that understanding in respect to the adoption of an alternative down-hole Avoca stoping method for use in particular circumstances.Intensive instrumentation of the Tasmania Mine over a period of four years has provided insight into the behaviour of the rock mass in response to extraction of the narrow vein orebody it encompasses. A range of instruments have been installed in clusters or single installations in order to measure changing stress conditions and the impact of those changes on the rock mass and the reinforcement system.Instruments are often installed in very close proximity to active production stoping. While it has been possible to observe the impact of the mining and mining induced seismicity at very close quarters, instruments installed in these locations are vulnerable to damage and consequently, the level of instrumentation is high. Instruments are continuously logged, typically on a six hourly basis coinciding with the end of regular blasting times. Accurate estimation of rock load and selection of types of ground reinforcement to match post-failure behaviour of rock mass are important issues to assure tunnel stability. This paper focuses on the main factors affecting rock load to evaluate the capabilities of the existing models for prediction of rock load. Rock mass properties, project features and excavation method, as well as ground conditions and stress condition were found to be the key factors affecting the magnitude of rock load. Field data from tunnels of about 37.5?km driven in several geological structures in non-squeezing ground was used in this study. An in depth statistical analysis was performed on data to find correlations between the input parameters and measured/observed rock load. A weighting system was proposed to obtain the proper contribution of each factor for estimation of rock load in tunnelling through various ground conditions. The new classification system offered predicted values for rock load that were in a good agreement with the actual field measurements. The high disturbance factor (D>0.4) was the prime factor which controlled the rock load. Problems associated with gas management become more significant as exploitation of coal reserves in the Bowen Basin in Australia becomes deeper. At Oaky North mine, relocation of production from one area of the mine to another with a higher gas content required the use of pre-drainage, post drainage and inertisation techniques to enable production activities to continue largely uninterrupted. Innovative surface to inseam drilling techniques were developed for pre-drainage of reserves close to mine workings and have proven to be largely successful. The gas management techniques adopted and specific experience gained are discussed in this paper.

Investigations were carried out of burden distribution using a full scale model of the furnace top. Various charging sequences were used and large differences were found between ore charged as sinter-pellets and as pellets-sinter. These were attributed to the differences in the angle of repose between the two materials. Permeability index was defined which was independent of the driving rate from which a furnace resistance index was obtained for use in weekly reports. Results are summarised as a single expression between blast rates and pressures and the values of Qbl and Qmax are continuously measured to aid the operators in controlling the wind rate in the safe AP region. Results also indicate a reserve in capacity of No. 7 BF.

The Western Australian School of Mines is continuing to investigate the blasting techniques and mining strategies that are used for ore/waste separation (or high grade/low grade ore separation) or to prevent ore and waste mixing. The aim of all the mining strategies is to produce an optimum product. The optimum product is one which contains no diluent and undergoes no mixing of the various identified ore and waste blocks and is fully recovered at the minimum overall operating cost. The current study includes the use of computerised Knowledge Based Systems (KBS) technology to assist the user with the blast technique selection and blast design process. These aspects are highly dependent on the geology. (geometry, rock mass properties, grade distribution), explosive performance and the expectations of the mining company in terms of production rates and equipment utilisation. Most of these factors are not well defined and nor are they easy to quantify. However, a large amount of knowledge does exist and is available in the following forms: rules of thumb, empirical formulae, engineering judgement and past experience. KBS techniques are well adapted to handle such"forms of knowledge. The primary objective of this paper is to illustrate an approach for the use of Knowledge Based Systems during the analysis and interpretation stages of the blast design process. In particular, the components and methodology of the developed system are described for selective open pit gold mining. The Knowledge Based System developed was written using the declarative programming language PROLOG.

The Bungaroo Valley hosts a concealed Tertiary channel iron deposit (CID) along a 17 km stretch of its length. Bungaroo Valley is approximately 0.5 km wide upstream at its easternmost extent, and 3.5 km wide downstream where it joins the Jimmawarrada Creek. The valley follows the axial trace of an anticline that plunges gently to the southeast, and the CID infills the valley. Mineralisation extends to a depth of 230 m below the surface, and almost the entire deposit occurs below the water table. Bungaroo Valley cuts through the Buckland Hills and is bounded to the north and south by steep scarps capped with the resistant Dales Gorge Member of the Brockman Iron Formation. Basement rocks are believed to be mostly Wittenoom Formation shales and dolomites, with Mount McRae Shale and Mount Sylvia Formation also present. Deep, localised depressions appear at the base of the CID sequence towards the north edge of the upstream section of the valley, while downstream the basal CID contact is relatively flat and shallow. In both cases the profile of the CID surface closely mirrors that of the basal contact. The localised depressions seen in the upstream basal CID contact produce significant variations in CID thickness of up to 100 m over short strike distances. This uneven palaeotopography is most likely due to eddying and waterfalls forming within the riverbed prior to CID deposition during a time when the water table was much lower than at present. It may also be associated with possible karsting in an underlying dolomite unit and subsequent syn- or post-depositional collapse of the overlying CID. The irregular basal contact of the Bungaroo CID sequence has implications for mining in terms of pit design and resource accessibility.

Block caving is the lowest cost underground mining method but it has relatively high risks and a high up-front capital and development cost. It has application to large, often lower-grade orebodies where high production rates can provide good returns on the investment. However, it has a range of technical risks that are peculiar to block caving and the usual financial, political and environmental risks that may be exacerbated by the long lead-in times associated with the development of a block cave operation. With initial development costs that may be $100 M to $1000 M when the building of a treatment plant is also required, it is obviously important to minimise and manage the risks. In a greenfield project, commitment to a substantial proportion of the capital expenditure may be required to gain access to the deposit, and the decision to proceed at this stage would be based very largely on interpretations of drill hole data. In established mines the data may be supplemented by geological mapping and past experience, etc. The quality of this data is critical and yet it is frequently degraded through poor techniques and avoidable omissions. The final decision to proceed would be assessed on projected commodity prices, mining capital and operating costs, dilution and run of mine ore grades. The latter will vary over the life of the project and these can be estimated with drawdown or draw control modelling techniques. In this modelling, there are further risks in the assumed modelling parameters or that the modelling technique may not be applicable or appropriate. The paper addresses the most critical technical and operational risk areas and provides some practical precautions that can be taken to reduce these and improve the reliability of the geological and geotechnical models.
