In July 2006, ten Mining Engineering students and Associate Professor David Laurence from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) participated in the universityÆs inaugural overseas mining field trip. The ten-day trip to western Canada involved visits to two mines in British Columbia, the Diavik Diamond Mine in the Northwest Territories and the Syncrude oil sands operation in Alberta. Importantly, the groupÆs main objective was to gain a global understanding of todayÆs mining industry by observing the different cultural, legal, social and environmental setting found in Canada. It should be noted that the entire trip was planned, organised and directed by the students and benefited from extensive industry support both in Australia and Canada. This report intends to provide an overview of the field trip and describe to a limited extent the Canadian approach to mining.

During a period of twelve months between FY18-19, a series of trials were conducted to compare production drilling accuracy using two different methodologies, and the subsequent impact this had on stope performance (dilution and recovery). Testing was conducted at a series of underground mines in Australia. The drill rig’s existing alignment processes were compared to a new technology system, with the following observations: • The new technology was proven to limit rig alignment error, thereby reducing average blasthole deviation, resulting in an increase in the number of holes drilled within tolerance by up to 160%. • The increased accuracy reduced stope dilution significantly by reducing over-break of subgrade ore, whilst also increasing drilled meters (faster stope-cycle time), reducing the bridged tonnes ratio, and facilitating the capture of previously uneconomical stopes. A cost-benefit analysis extrapolated from each of the trials showed the extent to which the new technology, when applied to production data, reduced average dilution, increased ore recovery as well as general drill and blast productivity. In one such trial, the new technology was proven to have reduced average dilution by net 45.4%, which if applied to a full year’s production data, would result in AUD8.2M additional ore recovered, with AUD4.5M less spent on wasted cost of haulage and processing of diluted ore. As a result, return per tonne would increase 22%, from AUD87 to AUD106. This improvement was maintained over the following 12 months – reducing average dilution from 22% in FY17 to 12.1% in FY19.

High fluid pressures and deformation have been instrumental in the formation of high-grade gold lodes at the Archaean granite greenstone 12 Moz Sunrise Dam gold deposit in Western Australia. Historically, predicting the location of these lodes has been difficult due to the irregular nature and high-grade nugget characteristics of the deposit. Recent exploration successes and the discovery of the Vogue system have led to an improved knowledge of the deep extents of the mine. This new structural and gold distribution data has enabled a new 3D interpretation of the system and has provided a better insight into the links between deformation, fluid pressure evolution and gold deposition. Here we employ 3D geomechanical and coupled fluid flow modelling to better constrain areas of high strain partitioning, rheological failure and focused fluid flow, which provides a substantially increased predictive capacity for further within-mine exploration. The localisation of deformation in and around the main felsic porphyry and major shallow shear zones provides critical insights into fluid pathways that have contributed to the distribution of fracture networks and ultimately gold deposition during late stage deformation events. Understanding the relationship between deformation events, fluid pressure evolution and the partitioning of strain is paramount in understanding the distribution of gold and for focusing on future target areas.CITATION:McLellan, J G, Blenkinsop, T G and Nugus, M J, 2013. Underground mines in Australia are progressively operating at greater depth, sometimes in conditions where mine induced stresses are very high. In such conditions, the seismic activity often becomes intense and violent and in response, mines must develop and implement a sound rock burst risk management strategy to continue operating safely.This paper discusses the latest techniques successfully used in Australian mines to mitigate the risk of rock bursts. In particular, the paper describes how the analysis of data collected from seismic monitoring systems can provide an understanding of the seismicity and be used for quantifying seismic hazards in the mine. Once an adequate understanding and assessment of seismic hazard has been achieved, the associated risk can be mitigated using different layers of protection.Strategically, modifying the mining method, the extraction sequence and/or the mining layout can alleviate the seismic hazard, but these solutions generally cannot be implemented rapidly. In the short-term, seismic risk can be mitigated tactically using an energy absorbing support system or to remove personnel from being exposed to rock burst damage by implementing exclusion zones.

The Australian mineral industry involves a diverse range of expertise and skills. Within that, the mining industry, representing mine planning, mine management and equipment operation, has capital intensive, high productivity equipment and a small but skilled workforce. Continuing education for all personnel in the workforce after formal school courses will be an important contribution towards improving competitiveness. The non-tertiary sector represents a significant proportion of the workforce and requires as much attention as the tertiary educated group. Competency Based Training is now being developed for the mining industry in Australia under the National Training Board and the mining industry is well represented in establishing standards and curriculum. TAFE is a major source of accredited courses but some mining companies are also developing internal courses not necessarily for external accreditation. Articulation of such accredited courses to tertiary mining engineering courses has been considered. The education and training of equipment operators through continuing education requires attention to operating skills, an understanding of the productivity factors under the direct influence of the operator and providing product quality to the customer. The education and training of mining engineers has been widely covered and continuing close involvement of the mining industry is required to ensure well balanced courses in technical and interpersonal skills as well as motivation to continue learning for life. Postgraduate research is a part of continuing education but the mining industry has to continually address the adequate recognition of post-graduate qualifications for the increased technical or management expertise and the development of better analytical and problem solving skills which can be directed towards improving competitiveness. More attention has to be paid to providing adequate financial incentives to attract suitable students, particularly after attaining some experience, and to address their professional career path with a company so they are not significantly disadvantaged by undertaking post-graduate studies. The Chartered Professional Engineer status as provided by The Institution of Engineers, Australia to qualified candidates is being considered by The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy as a further recognition of a member's specific expertise and competence in mining and metallurgical engineering. Continuing education plays a major part in the maintenance of the expertise and competence required for a professional engineer to develop and also to retain chartered status. Continuing education will be a significant part of the education and training of all the mining workforce towards improving the competitiveness of the mining industry. The major challenges will be the motivation of all towards lifelong learning and the integration of the various programs towards providing the opportunity for a steady and satisfying career progression.

Deposit-10/11A is situated in the iron rich Bailadila region of India comprising haematite ore of average grade 65 per cent Fe. The deposit production line was commissioned in the year 2002 having a capacity of 5 Mt/a. The plant has the state of the art mineral processing equipments.The ore is transported from mines to crushing plant by means of dumpers. The ore is comminuted in two stages to get 150 mm top size product and this product is transported through conveyor system and is stored in silos as feed stock for beneficiation plant. In the beneficiation plant this crushed product is wet screened in two stages to produce a product of lump (-150 + 10 mm) and fines (-10 + 3.15 mm). The product of -3.15 mm top size is fed to primary classifier for a size separation at 150 µm. The resultant product (-3.15 mm + 150 µm) is dewatered and transported to fi ne ore product stock yard through conveyor system. The minus 150 µm material from classifier overflow is fed to cyclones (508 mm cyclone battery with an apex of 65 mm) for desliming at 45 µm and to recover ultrafi nes (-150 + 45 µm). The cyclone overfl ow slimes (-45 µm) along with water is treated in lamella thickeners to recover process water. The thickener underflow material is transported to tailing pond (discharge rate is 300 m3/h at a specific gravity of 1.4) by pumping through HDPE (high density poly ethylene) pipeline and the over flow water is being recirculated. The water requirement for beneficiation is approx 1.5 m3 per ton of ore.This paper aims at identifying and quantifying the factors that affect the overall plant performance (grade and recovery) during the different seasonal variations especially in the rainy season (mid-June to end October). The effect of seasonal variations on unit operations such as milling, classification, thickening and filtration are discussed. Specific cases are presented as examples and recommendations are formulated.

Organic carbon is a major ore contaminant at MMG’s Century mine. This carbonaceous matter is associated with shale hosted sphalerite mineralisation. It occurs as elongated lamellae and as inclusions in porous sphalerite aggregates which are fine grained and difficult to liberate from sphalerite. The carbon prefloat circuit was designed to remove the liberated organic carbon in order to mitigate excessive reagent consumption, contamination of the lead and zinc concentrates and poor flotation performance in the primary zinc circuit. The consequence of organic carbon removal is that sphalerite and galena minerals are lost to the prefloat concentrate. A Jameson Cell was installed in late 2005 as a prefloat cleaner cell. Operational experience showed that the cell became capacity limited during periods of high amounts of organic carbon in the feed and was subsequently bypassed.Reactive style operating strategies were implemented to manage the effects of insufficient organic carbon removal by the prefloat circuit but due to the relatively large circuit residence time, upstream changes meant hours before the downstream circuits were stabilised following a disturbance from excess carbon.This paper describes the modifications and testwork undertaken to enable the Jameson Cell to be operated during periods of high organic carbon in the float feed and the implementation of process control initiatives to proactively remove the required prefloat mass from the float feed to eliminate the reactive style operating strategy.The process control modifications centred on dynamically targeting a prefloat mass recovery determined by an equation relating the carbon to zinc ratio to the carbon prefloat mass as a percentage of the float feed. The equation was developed by analysing historical data. These improvements served to optimise the prefloat circuit and consequently stabilise the downstream lead and zinc circuits.

Education for the Mineral Industry in Australia developed in an uncoordinated but effective fashion till the mid 1960's, with recognised quality in graduates, with output matching demand, and with industry needs being fulfilled. Then in the space of a further 20 years, as company structures expanded, as the number, complexity, and costs of mineral projects escalated, as educational facilities, costs and politics increased, as community perceptions and aspirations changed, as government control of minerals and education increased, and as mineral sales cycles and markets fluctuated widely, the very fabric of Australian Mineral Education fell in tatters. Extractive Metallurgy Education suffered most in this collapse, and no compre- hensive remedies have been initiated. We are all the losers. In the 1990's, the extraction of Australian minerals and metals will increase in international significance, and the education of Extractive Metallurgists must meet this need. After examining the current situation, a series of management strategies are proposed to enable Extractive Metallurgical Education to survive and prosper in the next two decades and beyond. These strategic proposals involve industry, the government, the educational bodies, and individuals, in a range of short and long term objectives, policies, and actions.

"AEROPHINE® 3418A Promoter is a well-known and widely used collector and is an industry standard for its excellent selectivity and efficacy in the processing of complex polymetallic sulfide ores, particularly those containing silver. Until now, however, it has not found widespread use in primary nickel flotation.In an effort to increase nickel recovery without compromising selectivity over iron sulfides, Western Areas Forrestania Nickel operation trialled the use of AEROPHINE® 3418A as a secondary collector at low dosage. A series of ON/OFF trials were conducted, with the finding that a very low dose of AEROPHINE® 3418A increased nickel recovery by 0.6 per cent compared to using xanthate alone.This paper provides a brief operational history and overview of the Forrestania operations, a description of the trial and an analysis of the results.Citation:Emery, S, Flynn, M, Tan, K and Munro, C, 2016. The Girilambone Copper Mine is located in central New South Wales and has been operational since May 1993. Girilambone is operated by the Girilambone Copper Company (GCC) which is a joint venture between Straits Resources (60 per cent) and Nord Resources (40 per cent). The mine complex consists of an open cut pit, ore crushing and stacking, heap leaching, solvent extraction (SX) and electrowinning (EW) allowing for the recovery of 14 600 tpa of LME grade A cathode copper. The leaching and SX-EW plant have been described previously by Rear, Taylor and Busby (1994) and Miller (1994).

Correct sampling practices are of vital importance to the mining industry; key decisions for the business are made on the basis of samples in all the value chain. Geology plays a relevant role in pre- and post-investment stages. Actually the understanding of natural variability is essential for geological modelling, geometallurgical modelling, mine planning, grade and process control. Improper sampling practices obstruct this objective introducing irrelevant variability components, which can cause monumental economic losses. A good approach to accomplish this understanding is the application of heterogeneity and IngamellsÆs tests, which are useful tools to quantify the variability of a certain well-delimited geological unit at different comminution scales. The application of heterogeneity test can help minimise Pierre GyÆs fundamental sampling error and to study the impact of other sampling errors. IngamellÆs test allows us to define the correct mass of sample for chemical analysis. This paper presents the results of several heterogeneity and IngamellsÆs tests done in Chilean porphyry copper deposits that belong to CODELCO Chile (Chuquicamata, Mina Sur, Radomiro Tomic, El Salvador, Andina and Teniente), in different geological units (endogenous oxides, exotic oxides, supergene sulfides and hypogene sulfides) and for several elements (Cut, Cus, Mo and As). These tests, considering the natural variability, have helped us develop accurate sampling protocols to minimise the fundamental error to acceptable levels. A major contribution of these tests (more than 30) is the generation of secure sampling protocols using the highest sampling constant obtained in the tests, for new porphyry copper deposits that donÆt have information given by heterogeneity and IngamellsÆs tests.

The Bulli and Wongawilli Seams, the two principal sources of coking coal for the Port KKembla steelworks of Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd., vary in rank and in type over the Southern and -South Western Coalfields. The Bulli Seam, ranging widely in type, produces coke varying from weak to strong. The Wongawilli Seam, more consistent in type, produces coke of more consistent strength, but considerably less strong than that from the best Bulli Seam coal. Plans of seam variation show the regional trends in rank and type for each sear. The strongest coke is derived from coal containing between 45 and 55 per cent vitrinite, m.m.f. This is obtainable from the Bulli Sean in a zone embracing Bulli and Appin Colleries.

The Synthetic Rutile (SR) plant operations, North Capel, produce electrostatic precipitator (ESP) fume and kiln scrubber residue. Typically ESP contains about 18 per cent Ti, 13 per cent Fe, 0.5 per cent Mn, eight per cent Si, six per cent Al, 16 per cent C, 0.9 per cent Zn, 0.6 per cent Pb, 300 ppm As, 300 ppm Cr and 5 ppm Cd. These wastes are held in a storage dam together with neutralised acid effluent (AE) liquor. A project was initiated to treat the fume and produce a benign residue that could be delivered to landfill, reducing dam space storage. Plant AE, containing free acid (9 - 14 g/L), Fe (6 - 7 g/L) and Mn (1 g/L), was used to leach ESP. The degree of extraction achieved for various elements include about 20 per cent Zn, almost 50 per cent As, five per cent Al, 0.4 per cent Pb and 15 per cent Cd. Extraction was most effective at pH The residue from AE leaching still contained Pb. TCLP tests of the leach residue produced Pb extraction significantly higher than the 0.1 ppm stipulated by Class 2 landfill guidelines. Other elements (eg As, Cd, Cr) successfully met the limits. Further leaching of the residue with EDTA extracted up to 65 per cent of Pb content. TCLP tests on treated residue showed Pb leaching potential of Lead was removed from the leach circuit as the sulphate by acidification of EDTA leach liquor, allowing EDTA to be recycled. The study showed that one waste stream can be used to treat another and help reduce plant waste.

The uranium markets are at present well covered by available producers. However the predicted increase in demand, recently reinforc- ed by the Arab oil crisis, will by, the early 1980s'outdistance supply. Current trends are towards light water reactors with-fast breeder reactors not expected to make any significant impact to the mid 1980s. The proposed lifting of the US embargo on the use of foreign uranium in US reactors will expand the market available to non US producers. A balancing in supply and demand worldwide will probably occur in the early 1980s. Australia's potential producers at present hold about 20 percent of the worlds U308 resources. Three companies, have contracts to supply nearly 10 900 tonnes of U308 between now and 1986 which represents about 1 percent of the predicted demand to 1986. Australian producers need to establish themselves more firmly in the market place in order that other countries will not replace us. Contracts can be written now which will allow for world market prices to be paid in the future, thus protecting the Australian producer.

For any gold deposit-based geometallurgical study, the collection and processing of representative samples for gold grade and recovery tests is critical. Sampling protocols should be designed to suit the style of orebody in question. The proportion and size of gold particles has a direct impact on the effectiveness of sampling protocols and metallurgical recovery processes employed. Studies focussing on ore mineralogy and gold particle deportment, size and distribution are required. Key issues are the presence of gold particle clustering (important for sampling optimisation) and proportion of coarse versus fine to refractory gold. X-ray computed tomography (CT) is a radiographic technique that produces high-resolution 3D computerised models of objects based on density distribution. The ‘virtual’ specimens are made up of voxels, the 3D equivalent of pixels each assigned a grey value based on X-ray absorption. This paper presents the results of recent research on the imaging of in situ gold particles in a coarse gold-bearing ore. The technique shows promise as a rapid non-destructive method for preliminary characterisation to facilitate more detailed studies. The Myra Falls minesite, of Westmin Resources Limited, is located at the geographic centre of Vancouver Island, within the confines of Strathcona Provincial Park. The operation includes two active underground mines, II-W and Lynx, together with a modem 3650 1/d milling facility. Recent exploration successes will lead to the commissioning of a third mining area in late-1993 - The Battle/Gap Mine. These ore deposits are complexly metal-zoned volcanogenic massive sulphides of Devonian age, hosted in the Myra Formation of the Sicker Group volcanic assemblage. Three distinct felsic volcanic units are defined within the 450 metre thick Myra Formation. They are, from oldest to youngest, the H-W Horizon, the LMP Horizon and the Upper Rhyolite Unit. Massive sulphide mineralisation occurs throughout the property in the H-W and LMP Horizons. There are a number of orebody types, including polymetallic massive sulphides, polymetallic disseminated sulphides, zoned pyritic massive sulphides, elastic sulphide zones and stringer sulphide zones. Individual orebodies range in size from 10 000 tonne zinc-rich polymetallic lenses to the ten million tonne, zoned massive sulphide H-W main lens. The property has been in continuous operation for 26 years, producing over 13 Mt of ore averaging 2.2 g/t Au, 64.0 g/t Ag, 1.9 per cent Cu, 0.6 per cent Pb, and 5.6 per cent Zn. Current geological reserves stand at 12.5 Mt at a comparable grade, including 4 Mt of recently discovered high grade ore in the Battle and Gap Zones. Mining and milling methods have evolved over time to enable successful extraction and milling of these complex ores. Change is on-going with the recent conversion of the H-W Mine to large-scale bulk mining methods, and the development of effective computerised ore reserve calculation and mine planning tools. These changes, in concert with successful exploration techniques that led to recent high grade ore discoveries, have breathed new life into the operation and should assure its present and future viability.

The aim of this research is to develop a model through which the appropriate paste recipe parameters, for example solid content and cement content, can be derived given the stope specific requirements such as stope dimensions, required strength and curing time. A large number of samples and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) tests were conducted at the Angas Zinc Mine (AZM) paste plant and testing facility. Samples were varied in tailings solids content, cement content and sand content. The results of this testing were modelled to determine the UCS relationship to each of the parameters. The output of this modelling was an easy-to-use program that outputs the design mixture given the stope dimensions and required stope backfill-curing time. This allowed flexibility within the mining schedule for curing times of cemented paste backfill stopes. The optimised schedule using the stope specific mix design, when compared to the standard 14-day curing time used previously, resulted in a smoother weekly mine production schedule. For the modelled 12-week period (one quarter) the 14-day curing time would result in an eight-day shutdown of the mill. The cost for each shutdown is in the order of $125 000/d. Due to the unique nature of each mine’s tailings, this exact outcome would not be directly applicable to another paste fill site. However, the process in this report could be followed for another site to achieve a system similar to the output of this project. The 1980's has seen a revolution in gold mine developments in Australasia. We are witnessing a near ten fold increase in all phases of gold mine development ranging from exploration through to production. Ounces produced have yet to mirror this activity but have increased from a low point of 600,000 in 1980 to 1,800,000 ounces in 1985 in Australia alone. In 1980 the region had less than 10 gold mines, yet 14 new mines started production in 1985 and as many as 28 might start up in the next 18 months. Developing gold mines in the 1980's in Australasia has not been the easiest of jobs, yet the great number of new developments suggest that we have entered a new era that will rank in history along with the 1850's, 1890's and 1930's as high points.Within- our Australasian region two very distinctive styles of gold deposits are being discovered and developed. On the Australian mainland the new mines are in geologically old rocks and are mostly the low grade haloes surrounding worked out high grade deposits. Most are limited life open pit operations depending on recent innovative carbon-in-pulp or heap leach technology. In the Pacific Islands region the style of discoveries are geologically recent, large bulk-low-grade deposits often geologically analogous to porphyry copper deposits. These deposits are typically 10 to 20 times larger than those being proved up on the Australian mainland.

For metallurgical plant design, it is necessary to progress through successive phases of test work, piloting and process development before involving all the other engineering disciplines and “freezing” the process design criteria and flow sheet. This process usually relies upon the experience, skills and personal preferences of various technology providers, study and engineering entities, test work and metallurgical laboratories and, most importantly, the owner’s team and its operators. Current industry trends include lower grades, more complex orebodies, geometallurgy in defining orebody variation and design envelopes, more common “hybrid” plant processes and the market demands for more reliable, timely and predictable early plant performance.This paper will discuss interaction of these trends and provide guidelines for the level of detail and technical complexity required for a number of different “typical” examples. The paper will pay particular attention to the study definition level translated into the required detail and certainty needed by the overall process “owner” and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) equipment suppliers to ensure the best real plant performance. Some recent case studies will be discussed. In many projects, at a late stage of project definition, it has become common practice to undertake a “value engineering” phase. Although it could be argued that this should be undertaken earlier, it is largely driven by an overall need to reduce capex and “optimise” the perceived “fat” built into the project during the detailed design process. This value engineering can be very counterproductive to project timing and operational performance and warrants discussion.The paper is intended to promote discussion on a topic of wide interest. "The availability of real-time data in any process control system is critical for effective management of that system. At MMG LXML Sepon Copper Operation in Lao PDR, controlling the copper grade of the feed to the leaching circuit is paramount for maximising both productivity and copper recovery. Since 2008, real-time analysis data has been available to the process engineers from the Geoscan on-belt analyser installed on the Copper Mill feed conveyor, and highly accurate results on copper grade have allowed the process engineers to strictly control blending to overcome the variability in plant feed grade. The availability of real-time analysis data is crucial, as effective sampling of this stream is both difficult and error-prone, being only a snapshot in time of highly variable ore stockpiles, as well as having significant laboratory turnaround delays. Periodic sampling is used to verify the Geoscan data as accurate. Since its installation, the copper result has been the most critical output of the Geoscan. In recent times, the process engineers have sought to utilise other results from the Geoscan to further improve and control the process. One measurement of particular interest involves the real-time measurement of calcium and magnesium as a gauge of ore feed gangue acid consumption. To satisfy this end, accurate measurement of calcium and magnesium is becoming increasingly more important and has been the subject of ongoing collaboration between Sepon and Scantech, the manufacturer of the Geoscan.
