Iron Road Limited is currently studying the feasibility of producing 20 Mt/a of high-grade (67 per cent Fe) magnetite concentrate from a 2.6 Bt resource (JORC) located at Warramboo on the central Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. Bulk concentrate has been tested at a relatively coarse grind size of -106 ¦m. The preliminary flow sheet has been confirmed based on initial mine plans and comprehensive metallurgical testing across the range of mineralisation. Extensive Davis tube testing to predict magnetite recoveries has been conducted over the resource, however this was completed at settings different to the optimised settings developed in the metallurgical test work program.This paper outlines the development of an ore treatment simulation in SysCAD which utilises the mine production plan, the Davis tube test data from the resource, data from metallurgical test work and process design criteria to predict magnetite concentrate deliveries. Mineralogical data, including QEMScan results and metallurgical assessments, were a fundamental basis of the process models which enable predictions of concentrate yield and quality. Power and water requirements are also calculated within the model. SysCAD dynamic simulation has been used to assist with the design of the process plant and downstream infrastructure. The D47 and D39 Mechanical Dynamic Extra bolts (D47 MDX and D39 MDX) have been developed in response to the ever-increasing demand from the mining industry for rock bolts with high dynamic capacity. To prove such capacity, Sandvik has performed numerous in situ dynamic testing with the unique Dynamic Test Rig (DTR) (Darlington, Rataj and Roach, 2019; Roach, Rataj and Darlington, 2019). To complement the collection of testing data, Sandvik, in collaboration with the Swedish Research Institute for Mining, Metallurgy and Materials (Swerim) have performed additional experiments in laboratory condition using Swerim’s new drop test rig. This rig utilises a momentum transfer method to apply a dynamic load to the bolt. The sample falls together with the mass until the support beam impacts stationary dampers and the momentum energy is transferred to the bolt. Part of the charged energy is released by the dumpers while the remaining portion is absorbed by plastic deformation and/or displacement of the ground support element. The D47 and D39 MDX bolts have been tested at Swerim’s test facility with different levels of input energy. Six tests were performed at the specification energy of 36 kJ and six tests were carried out with the maximum allowable energy from the facility, ie 44 kJ. The bolts confirmed their dynamic performance absorbing the input energy without failure. The D47 MDX bolt absorbed up to 33 kJ with 150 mm displacement while the D39 MDX bolt absorbed up to 35 kJ with 162 mm displacement. This work will present an overview of the drop test rig at Swerim’s facility and a collection of results of the test performed on the D47 and D39 MDX bolts. The test method and results will be analysed and compared to the tests carried out with the in situ DTR.

Mining conditions imposed by a coal seam roof can be analysed according to natural causes, before consideration of strata control. All types of roof behaviour can be explained by considering only three independent variables. They are roof rock types, rock stresses and discontinuities. Roof rock types encountered in the Sc.ithern Coalfield of New South Wales (NSW) are sandstone, shale, mudstone, laminite and coal. Each rock has its own mode of failure. Lithological stability of the sediments varies from one type to another. Regional stresses upon a coal seam roof will vary in magnitude according to the proportion of gravitational stress, which is related to depth of cover, and residual stress, which is related to the maximum depth of burial and may be gauged by coal rank. Local stresses will vary according to tectonic deformation, related to irregularities in seam structure.

The Work Health and Safety Act 2020 (WA) (WHS Act; DMIRS, 2020) and associated Work Health and Safety (Mines) Regulations 2022 (WA) (WHS Regulations; DMIRS, 2022), supporting guidance materials and other laws, such as the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (Cth) (SD Act), have imposed new duties on every person or business conducting an undertaking (PCBU) in Western Australia, including those operating in the mining industry. These laws and associated guidance materials combine to require owners, operators and contractors to discharge positive duties and better report and manage psychosocial hazards in the workplace. For mine operators, there is a positive duty to not only identify and eliminate hazards relating to psychological harm, sexual harassment and gendered violence at work, but to also report incidents to the safety regulator that could result in serious harm, even while internal and police investigations are ongoing. Traditional mines safety teams are navigating the evolving frontier of psychological and gendered safety as the duties relating to psychosocial safety and sexual harassment at work continue to expand. This paper will review the legal obligations on PCBUs to conduct internal investigations into critical psychosocial incidents and gendered violence on mines, whilst balancing the demands and sensitivities of investigations by the safety regulator and police. There are emerging approaches to safety investigations that can aid PCBUs in managing their investigations of psychosocial incidents and gendered violence, including trauma-informed investigation techniques, collaboration with psychological experts and the use of limited legal privilege. Well managed and sensitive investigations can foster trust amongst workers, result in improved incident reporting by workers and lead to enhanced safety outcomes for the resources industry whilst preserving the legal positions of involved PCBUs. Specifically traversing the new duty to consult, cooperate and coordinate, this practical session will arm mine managers, safety professionals and human resources professionals, from mine operators and mining contractors alike, with tools and processes to bring to safety investigations, particularly on residential mine sites.

The Kainantu area lies within the composite Scrapland terrane which is composed of Mesozoic metamorphic and intrusive units, overlain by Cenozoic marine sediments, volcanic and intrus-ive units and Quaternary fluvial sedi-ments.Four deformations (Dl, D2, D3, D4) are recognised within the Mesozoic sequences, which consist of greenschist to amphibolite facies schist derived from felsic to intermediate pyroclastic rocks and pelitic sediments. The second, third and fourth fold events are present in the Cenozoic sequence, and these rocks are broken by thrusts related to northwest trending D3 folds. South-dipping, possibly lystric, normal faults are recognised and may be related to uplift and exposure of the metamorphic rocks as core complexes.Known mineralisation in the area consists of gold and copper skarn deposits, porphyry copper deposits, shear-hosted gold deposits, epithermal vein deposits and gold placer deposits. Over 35 hard rock and 18 gold placer deposits are known within the area. Of significance are the Kathnell shear-hosted auriferous quartz veins; such structurally controlled veins may be more widespread than proposed prev-iously and offer a new exploration target.

The flow of information, and consequently the decision-making along the chain of mining from exploration to beneficiation, typically occurs in a discontinuous fashion over long timespans. In addition, due to the uncertain nature of the knowledge about deposits and the inherent spatial distribution of material characteristics, actual production performance often deviates from expectations. Reconciliation exercises to adjust mineral resource and reserve models and planning assumptions are performed with timely lags of weeks, months or even years.The key concept of real-time mining promotes a change in paradigm from discontinuous intermittent process monitoring to a continuous process and quality management system in the resource extraction process. The framework includes a real-time feedback control loop that rapidly links online data acquired during extraction at the mining face, material handling and processing with a sequentially updatable resource model. This will allow near real-time optimisation of decisions related to long-term planning, short-term sequencing and production control.The proposed framework integrates the following building blocks in a holistic manner: automated sensor-based material characterisationonline machine performance measurementsunderground navigation and positioningunderground mining system simulation and optimisation of planning decisionsupdating techniques for resource/reserve models.This paper introduces the real-time mining concept and the building blocks and provides a review of the state-of-the-art. Technological readiness of necessary building blocks is assessed, and critical gaps for further technology development are identified. A study was carried out to compare the environmental impacts of the two major iron ore agglomeration processes, sintering and pelletising, using life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. The following agglomeration processing routes, with the fuel options shown, were investigated:sintering with combined natural gas/coke breeze or charcoal as fuel, grate-kiln pelletising with combined natural gas/coke breeze as fuel, and straight-grate pelletising with combined natural gas/coke breeze as fuel. Inventory data for each process derived from the literature, and in some instances supplemented by additional simulations and calculations, were used in the study and the environmental impact categories considered were gross energy requirement (GER), global warming potential (GWP) and acidification potential (AP). The results of the study showed that the GER, GWP and AP for a sinter plant are higher than those for a pellet plant for the same amount of metallic iron in the agglomerated products. These results are partly due to higher consumption of solid fuel and flux in the sintering process. However, it should be pointed out that the study only compared substantially fluxed sinters with acid pellets that may require additional flux (and hence potentially more greenhouse gases emissions) to be a balanced blast furnace feedstock. Extending the LCA to the blast furnace process stage was beyond the scope of the current study. Within the sinter plant, the sintering stage itself is the largest contributor to the GER, GWP and AP. In the case of pellet plant, the pellet induration stage is the largest contributor to the various environmental impacts. The GER and GWP of a straight-grate pellet plant are marginally higher than those of a grate-kiln pellet plant due to the higher electrical power required by the straight grate system. The substitution of coke breeze with charcoal in the sintering process results in an increase in GER but a decrease in GWP. However, a substantial proportion of the GER is derived from renewable sources (wood), resulting in a decrease in the non-renewable components of this environmental impact. Given the source of the inventory data and the assumptions and approximations made in carrying out the LCAs, it is emphasised that the results presented in this paper should be considered as indicative rather than as definitive results for the two iron ore agglomeration processing routes considered.

Bentonites and fuller's earths from seven localities in N.S.W. have been analysed with respect to occurrence, mineralogy and physical properties and areas for future prospecting have been indicated.INTRODUCTIONThe rapid expansion of Australian industry in the postwar years has been accompanied by an ever increasing demand for fuller's earth and bentonite, but in New South Wales at least the demand has been met principally by imports. However, some local and generally inferior active earths have been won to blend with imported materials to reduce costs. The important discovery of the widespread distribution of bentonite clays in the Northern Coal Measures, made recently by Grim (Booker, 1956), has givenimpetus to the further search for material comparable in quality to the imported active earths.Bentonite may be defined as a highly plastic clay, generally possessing swelling properties, composed essentially of montmorillonite and derived from the alteration of volcanic ash. Fuller's earth refers to any clay which, with or without chemical treatment, is capable of decolourizing mineral or vegetable oils and is, therefore of economic value. Geological data processing by machine enables'an increased rate of coverage, better supervision and control of field programmes, increased effectiveness of field operators, and vastly improved access to old and new field data. Even a system of restricted felxibility enables a mapping programme to be organ- ized and conducted independent of personnel changes, whilst elimination of much compilation time increases the rate of cover- age such that it relates to mode of transport and geological complexity rather than to personality factors. A machine is useful only if applied to tasks suited to its capabilities, and must be aimed at those types of mapping in which a limited number of attributes adequately define the problem, and the data is of a form suited to coding and is normally collected in sufficient abundance to make compilation wearisome. Machine systems are therefore unsuited to most types of lithological mapping and to most types of exploration in new areas, but have proved useful in many branched of cartographic geophysics (e.g. gravity and magnetics), and in cartographic Geochemistry.

The segment of the Upper Cenozoic volcanic chain (CVZ) located on the western border of South America (16-28¦S lat.) is constituted by an association of strato- volcanoes and ignimbrite sheets, with high K calco-alkaline affinities. Strata-bound volcanoes, mainly of andesitic and dacitic composition, present along the whole chain, and various hydrothermal alteration zones, on the slopes and in the cores of eroded volcanic structures. Some of these altera- tion zones bear epithermal precious metal ores and sulphur deposits, which at present are being exploited. The studied Salar de Gorbea area, located in the Andes of northern Chile (25-26¦S lat.) contains a numer- ous group of Miocene to Quaternary stratovolcanoes, with advanced argillic and extreme silicification hydrothermal alteration in their cores and on their slopes, favoring the formation of great volumes of alunite within altered zones and sulphur deposits in the higher parts of the volcanic edifices. Simultaneously, siliceous hydrothermal breccia of the phreato-magmatic type, with evidences of hydromag- matic explosions are recognizable, allowing, in some cases, the ascent towards the surface of rock fragments belonging to the Paleozoic pre volcanic basement. Radiometric ages obtained in some of the hydro- thermal alteration zones (K-Ar in alunite) are slighty young- er than the unaltered rocks which constitute the strato- volcano. Trace element (Hg, As, Sb, S, Au, Ag, Cu, Pb, Zn, Mo) patterns in orientative rock samplings show that the studied alterations zones correspond to high sectors of the cpithermal system, without evidences of metallic minerali- zation on surface. The weak erosive action due to the ex- tremely and climatic conditions in this segment of the Andes, has not allowed the cropping out of deeper areas of the hydrothermal alteration zones, in contrast to other Miocene more eroded volcanic edifices and Miocene vol- canic terranes of the Andean Range.

At 14 per cent, the representation of women working in the mining industry is the lowest among primary industry categories in Canada. Despite an increase in research and industry commitment to advance and retain women in the mining industry, the gender gap in mining organisations persists.This paper is based upon a recent Canadian survey of 163 highly qualified women (HQW) working in the mining sector. For the purpose of this research, HQW were defined as women with a BachelorÆs degree or higher. This research sought to identify career progression and retention patterns of women who in theory have the educational qualifications to advance into positions of leadership in mining operations. We considered why womenÆs advancement in mining organisations has stalled; examined the career development pathways of HQW; and investigated the interactions of mining workplace culture on HQWÆs career development and retention within the Canadian mining industry. Results?indicated two distinct career pathway trends for HQW. æThe specialistÆ; a career characterised by multiple professional scientific and technical positions, and æthe corporateÆ; a career characterised by professional administrative roles and roles in mid-level management. It was found that neither æcorporatesÆ nor æspecialistsÆ systematically progressed into senior management and executive roles. These findings suggest that HQWÆs careers in mining are stalled, despite a strong indication by respondents of interest in their professional career advancement. With regards to?workplace?culture, respondents indicated that blatant forms of gender discrim-ination have been reduced in mining workplaces; however, exclusion from informal networks, implicit bias and subtler forms of workplace discrimination persist. Consistent with previous mining sector research, improving work-life balance, work flexibility and mentorship were found as key drivers for HQW to advance and remain in the industry.CITATION:Hughes, C, Scoble, M and Roberts, M, 2012. Cyanide-extractable gold is far more meaningful in the definition of ore, and control of extraction, than fire- assayable or aqua regia digestible gold. The use of cyanide- extractable gold addresses the significant problems of over- as well as under-assaying by fire and aqua regia digests. The problems of conventional control or diagnostic cyanidation extractions: lengthy extraction, and masking by pregrobbing in cyanidation extractions for assay purposes; are surmounted with a novel activator - Leach WELL. Full extraction of liberated gold, insignificantly affected by preg-robbers, can now be achieved within 30 minutes. This can assist in reducing common gold losses presently often hidden by inappropriate mine call factors, and/or high grade cut values. This paper includes a discussion of fundamental mechanisms of cyanidation, preg- and assay-robbing, which underlie the phenomena Involved.

The Masbate gold deposits are situated on the island of Masbate, 350 km south of Manila. A new plant was commissioned in April 2009. The grinding circuit consists of one semi-autogenous (SAG) mill Ø9.75 m × 4.27 m, two ball mills Ø5.6 m × 7.1 m and a pebble crushing circuit, which is usually called a SAG-ball mill-crusher configuration. The SAG mill was originally equipped with radial pulp lifters. The mill runs at fixed speed of 10.9 rev/min, which is approximately 80 per cent of critical speed (per cent CS). Due to the high speed of the mill the original radial design pulp lifters presented a high volume of recirculating load inside the chamber and consequently heavy wear on the outer circle (bottom pan).In order to address the high wear on the pulp lifters a number of avenues were considered in early 2011. The chosen solution was to change the geometry of pulp lifters from radial to curved design. The pre-existing drilling pattern on the discharge end of the mill was a major constraint. A number of designs were considered. The selection of the most suitable option was to be made based on 3D discrete element modelling (DEM) and smoothed particle hydrodynamic (SPH) simulations.The original radial design and two potential solutions for curved pulp lifters were simulated with 3D DEM and SPH software. The main three objectives were predicting the charge dynamics, the expected wear patterns and discharge efficiency. One of the solutions was chosen and implemented during 2012.Observations carried on after installation of the curved pulp lifters have confirmed, as expected, a reduction in wear intensity on the outer pulp lifters. In addition to this, at early stages of operation with curved pulp lifters, the mill operator noticed a reduction in energy consumed by the mill with no detrimental effect on mill performance.This paper is intended to further study the effect of curved pulp lifters on mill energy consumption.CITATION:Ciutina, S and Soriano, R J, 2014. The volume changes occurring during the reduction by hydrogen of single, high-grade hematite pellets under isothermal and non- isothermal conditions were investigated using a time-lapse photographic technique. The major cause of swelling during iso- thermal reduction at temperatures in the range 600-1000¦C, was the disruptive stresses set up during the transformation of hematite to mag- netite. The severity of the disruption was temperature dependent; the degree of swelling increased with increases in the reduction temp erature. Under non-isothermal reduction conditions, in which the pellet temperatures were increased at constant heating rates over the temperature range 500-1000¦C, minor swelling (6-8%) occurred in the initial stages of reduction followed by pellet contractions of up to 15% in the final reduction stages. The low initial swelling and high final pellet shrinkages were due to a com- bination of the temperature dependence of the swelling mechanism, and the sintering of fine pores in the reduced iron in the latter stages of reduction at higher temperatures.

The properties of iron ore sinter – commonly defined by measures of tumble strength, reduction degradation and reducibility – have a major impact on blast furnace performance. These properties are largely influenced by raw material properties, in particular the bulk ore composition. Despite this importance, there is a lack of quantitative data on the impact of ore chemical composition on iron ore sintering. This is surprising since the levels of Fe, SiO2, Al2O3, P, MgO and other elements, together with the nature of the minerals in the fine ore, play a major role in determining the abundance and type of high-temperature bonding phases that form during sintering. It is the abundance and nature of the high-temperature bonding phase(s) that directly influences sinter quality. This study combines in situ diffraction experiments in model sinter systems with laboratory-based compact sinter tests using natural ores to examine the links between iron ore composition and sintering temperature and their effects on standard metallurgical sinter quality test methods. Results help to establish the critical compositional and thermal parameters that control the bonding phase chemistry, which in turn influences the physical characteristics of the sinter matrix. This information should enable operators to predict optimum sinter operating conditions based on the initial chemistry and mineralogy of the iron ore fines and recognise the chemical modifications to the original iron ore fines required to produce high-quality iron ore sinter.CITATION:Pownceby, M I, Webster, N A S, Manuel, J and Ware, N, 2015. China has been producing gold for more than 4000 years with gold production increasing substantially since the 1980s, from about 25 tonnes in 1980 to some 160 tonnes in 1998. More than 80 per cent of the gold production is from East China. However, complete information on eastern China gold has been rarely reported internationally. This is a general overview on the tectonics and metallogeny of gold deposits in East China. The geology of these gold deposits is compiled mainly from data and information reported in China, and is also based on the authorÆs work in China from 1974 to 1986 and a recent visit to China.

Despite the large areas of sedimentary basins in Western Australia, the coal resources are very meagre., This is a serious problem for the State, which-at present-lacks any other alternate source of fuel-for power production.. Located coal deposits are all poor in quality and mostly brown coals of little importance. The best..coal suitable for extraction is at Collie, where a black=sub- bituminous non-coking coal is mined. Most other coals recorded are low grade or lignite, with high ash'and moisture content and a low calorific value. Coal was first discovered in Western Australia in the bed of the Irwin River, 50-miles south-east of Geraldton, by the Gregory brothers, explorers, in the year 18+6,. but although investigated, it has never been developed. The most noteworthy discovery of coal was in the Collie River, 26 miles east of Bunbury, by Arthur Perrin in 1883. Production commenced in 1898 and ever since, Collie has continued to be the State's sole producing coalfield.

This paper describes the development of an approach to sustainable development for application at the feasibility study stage for a proposed bauxite mine near the community of Aurukun, south of Weipa on the western coast of Cape York Peninsula, Queensland, Australia. The general environment for development was complex in all dimensions. In particular, the socio-demographic profile of the Aurukun community (population 1200) characterised it as being amongst the most disadvantaged communities in Australia. The traditional owners of the area, the Wik and Wik-Way people, were at the forefront in the efforts of Indigenous people in Australia to secure land rights over the past 30 years, and they had previous experience negotiating an Indigenous Land Use Agreement (the Western Cape Communities Coexistence Agreement) with Rio Tinto Alcan, the operators of the Weipa bauxite mine. Through this they had shown a well-founded sense of entitlement with respect to the development of resources on their traditional land. The Queensland State Government had recently cancelled an existing mining lease over the bauxite resource as the holder of the tenement had not fulfilled the terms of a development agreement that had been in place for 30 years. The Government was anxious to avoid any future æbankingÆ of the resource, and had decided to offer tenure to the resource on an international competitive basis, subject to the requirements of the Commonwealth Native Title Act 1993. This would require a negotiation process with traditional owners and potentially involve companies with whom the traditional owners had no existing relationship (typically developed during the projectÆs exploration phase) and who possibly had no project development experience in Australia. As well, the State Government envisaged an approach to development that drew on the significant work that industry and other stakeholders had undertaken over the previous ten to 15 years, commencing with the mining, minerals and sustainable development (MMSD) process. This work was aimed at rectifying acknowledged deficiencies with industry recognition of stakeholder interests, in particular with respect to environmental management and socioeconomic development. The approach adopted aimed to define the strategic community interests and sustainable development outcomes to which the development of the resource would be expected to contribute, and to embody these within an easily usable management structure that could be applied to each stage of project development from feasibility study through to mine closure. The logical framework (AusAID, 2006; ICMM, 2005) was the management tool utilised to order the identified interests and desired outcomes. The structure included components aligned with the key areas of development interest expressed by the community, and the initial baseline sustainable development plan (SDP) developed established component objectives, outcomes, indicative outputs and activities for the feasibility stage of the project. This established an objective framework to guide potential bidders when developing their response to the State GovernmentÆs Request for Proposal. The paper will describe the evolution of the competitive process and the parallel process for development of the SDP. While the institutional environment was politically and socially complex, the use of simple visual representations of the environment and the analysis and ordering of issues, objectives and criteria through methods such as stakeholder analysis and the logical framework approach, enable the development of a dialogue on the contribution that the development of a mining project can make to sustainable community development, and for the development of an agreed program of community support to capture the contribution. The use of the logical framework was found to have good functionality for plan development. Achieving plan outcomes though, is highly dependent on the skill of key project personnel in facilitation, team building, conflict resolution and leadership, as well as their ability to influence the behaviour of key stakeholders with the capacity and authority to require the integration of local economic development criteria in to key project development decisions.

Major diamond pipes discovered in Western Australia in the late-1970s exhibited a number of unique features that not only resulted in Australia becoming the largest diamond producer in the world in volume terms by 1986 but also changed geological thinking on the primary occurrence of diamond. They were: - lamproite is an alternative primary diamond host to kimberlite. - the extremely high mean grade of the Argyle lamproite pipe at 5 ct per tonne. - the tectonic setting of the lamproite pipes in mobile zones mar- ginal to the Kimberley Craton in contrast to the traditional African setting within stable cratons. Diamond was one of the earliest economic minerals discovered in Australia but 128 years elapsed between its first recognition and the first Australian economic pipe discovery (Argyle). During that period some 200,000 ct of alluvial diamonds were mined in Australia (mostly in New South Wales), but such alluvial output is insignificant on the world scene where annual production today runs at 95 million ct of natural stones some 76010 of which comes from primary pipe sources such as Argyle which alone produces 30 million ct per annum. Of particular significance therefore is the geological nature of the primary diamond source rocks in Australia. The Argyle and Ellendale Pipes are lamproites, differing from kimberlite in their mineralogy and geochemistry, and characterised by the presence of typical lamproite minerals such as leucite, priderite, potassic richterite, and the abnormally high content of chemical elements incompatible with ultramafic rocks.
