Traditionally, quality control of iron sinter has relied on time-consuming wet chemistry. However, the mineralogical composition that defines the physical properties, such as strength or reducibility, is not monitored.X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis in combination with Rietveld quantification and statistical data evaluation using partial least squares regression (PLSR) has been successfully trialled to determine the mineralogical composition and process parameters such as the FeO (Fe2+) content and basicity of iron sinter within an analysis time of less than eight minutes per sample. The results were compared with wet chemistry data.PLSR does not require pure phases, crystal structures or complex modelling of peak shapes. The analysis is therefore easy to set up and ideal if only one property needs to be analysed. PLSR results show an accuracy for the FeO content of ±0.3 per cent for the samples analysed in this case study.Both the PLSR and Rietveld methods take the full XRD pattern into account and can be simultaneously applied on the same measurement. PLSR was found to be the more robust method if only FeO and basicity results are required. The Rietveld method helps to predict other parameters, such as the compression strength of the sinter, by monitoring all existing phases (eg larnite C2S or silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminium phases).CITATION:König, U and Norberg, N, 2015. In the comminution industry cone crushers are widely used for secondary and subsequent stages of size reduction. Traditionally cone crushers have been operated and monitored manually. Alteration of discharge setting is now commonly achieved via hydraulic means, however, compensation of liner wear can still involve plant shutdown and loss of production. Drift in discharge setting due to liner wear is still a major problem that must be addressed to improve product quality, consistency and reduce recirculating load. The continuous demand for better quality products and the high cost of reprocessing or discarding unsaleable material, highlights the need for re-examination of the technology associated with the crushers to ensure optimum control and system efficiency. A collaborative project between Pegson Ltd, one of the leading UK manufacturers of jaw and cone crushers, De Montfort University Leicester, and Transfer Technology plc was established to address the technological requirement for automation of the control of cone crushers. The machine chosen for the study is a 900 Autocone cone crusher manufactured by Pegson Ltd. The design philosophy is based on a mechatronic approach providing a complete solution through a distributed network of intelligent sensors, artificial intelligence technology and adaptive control. The modular design of the system ensures a progressive sophistication in technology that allows the automation to be phased in as required. This will ensure maximum benefits to all sectors of the aggregate industry. It is estimated that the automation will result in savings of around ten per cent. The savings will result from minimising the production of unsaleable products by reliable condition monitoring and automation of the control and maintenance of system parameters to optimise system efficiency. Extension of the methods and principles into the mining sector is anticipated. The control over the size of crusher product will offer great benefits to the mining industry with significant implications for subsequent milling and beneficiation processes.

In 1999, the Mineral Development Centre of CVRD (CDM) acquired a flotation device referred to as Mini Pilot Plant (MPP), which is able to run continuous flotation tests with drill core samples. Since then this equipment has been used to define the flotation circuit and process conditions during the pre-feasibility phase of CVRDÆs copper sulfide projects. Until now, the MPP results had not been validated for an industrial flotation operation. The present work consists of a comparison and correlation of the results from a flotation MPP and an industrial plant. In order to make this comparison, an industrial plant was completely sampled and the feed ore was tested on bench scale and on a MPP. The metallurgical and mass balances of each test were used for the comparison.

BHP Billiton Olympic Dam required a well-tested software product suitable for strategic optimisation and scheduling of options for a potential underground mining project. The company has a standard software package called Blasor® that is used for open pit optimisation of complex deposits such as iron ore, copper-gold-uranium and silver-lead-zinc. It applies a mixed integer programming formulation (MIP) to produce conceptual pushback designs and an optimised pushback sequence. Schedules can then be run on the resulting mine designs. Existing pushback designs can also be imported into the model and an optimum schedule generated. One of the key advantages of Blasor is that multiple strategic mine schedules can be quickly generated according to the various scenarios, options and constraints that are being investigated.It was realised that Blasor, if carefully configured, could be adapted for use in underground planning. The concept of using Blasor as an optimiser for underground strategic scenarios is to represent the underground stope and development data in the form and structure of an open pit mine. In simple terms, underground stoping areas are modelled in the form of pushbacks (phases) with vertical walls. The phase dependency tools in Blasor are used to link mine blocks and their access development drives. These underground phases are imported into the optimiser. Artificial block models are constructed using stope design tonnage and grade data at various fixed cut-offs. A variable cut-off grade model has also been developed using a method of parcels to represent each cut-off grade increment.So far, this approach has been successfully used to investigate the optimum stope design cut-off for various strategic options, the economic potential of a series of mining and processing configurations and to provide guidance on the optimum sequence for developing and mining the various stoping blocks in the resource. Mt. Whaleback is in the Pilbara region of Western Australia approximately 1200 kilometers north of Perth, the State capital. In this deposit the Mt. Newman Joint Venturers are mining ore reserves totalling 1500 million tonnes of high grade hematite averaging 64.0% Fe. In addition to Mt. Whaleback, 38 ore bodies have so far been identified outside Mt. Whaleback on the Company's remaining 75,000 hectares of lease area. These ore bodies contain major tonnages of iron ore. Extraction at present is planned at a rate of 37 million tonnes per annum at an ore-to-waste ratio of approximately 1 to 1.4. The ore is railed north to Port Hedland on the Indian Ocean where the different products are screened, crushed and blended prior to shipping. The purpose of this paper is to acquaint the reader with the facilities installed in the Mt. Newman operation to form a background to the sampling techniques employed, describe the precisions which were achieved in experiments conducted February through June, 1976 and also to assess the degree of blending which takes place during the various processes and to put a quantitative measure to the degree of blending. The blasting process involves a complex interaction of a delayed sequence of moving sources of seismic energy which produce nonlinear behaviour near the blast holes. A deterministic description of this nonlinear behaviour represents a formidable problem. The modelling of blast vibrations remote from the blast source may use some of the primary features of the blast design such as charge type, charge weight and initiation sequence. Such modelling of blast vibrations usually assumes linear behaviour remote from the blast holes. Site specific charge weight scaling laws may be used to predict the blast vibration levels with relatively poor accuracy. An important ingredient which is missing from charge weight scaling laws is the seismic source wavelet emanating from each blast hole. The present paper considers some approaches which may be used to determine a suitable source wavelet. The wavelets are suitable for use in the region where linearity may be assumed. In that region, it is possible to model the attenuation and scattering of the seismic wave as it propagates from the blast source to the measurement location.

Sedimentary structures are described from the WiIlyama Complex, New South Wales. Their presence confirms lithological layering within the metasediments as bedding. These primary structures occur not only in low grade rocks as previously reported by other workers, but also in areas of medium and high grade metamorphism.Sedimentary structures include graded beds, cross beds, ripple marks, and ball and pillow structures.The observed parallelism of the early schistosity and bedding in the Broken Hill area has previously led to the idea of transposition by isoclinal folding.In the areas mapped, small scale transposition is precluded on the basis of1. uniform facing of sedimentary structures over wide areas, and2. the existence of large areas in which the early schistosity is oblique to bedding.

The Truong Son fold-thrust belt (TSFTB) is a prominent tectonic component of mainland Indochina that occurs as a north-west–south-east-trending tectonic entity that extends from north-eastern Laos, straddles the Laos-Vietnam border area and is submerged under the sea basin in east central Vietnam. The TSFTB hosts numerous regional-scale gold and polymetallic base metal deposits, and the mineralisation occurs along the strike of the belt; however, the potential of many of these deposits are inadequately evaluated. The ore mineralisation is hosted by different rock assemblages, including highly metamorphosed Late Proterozoic metasedimentary rocks and Palaeozoic sedimentary and/or volcanic packages, which were intruded by several phases of magma and underwent a number of tectonic events. Several ore-forming styles – including porphyry, Carlin-type and sediment-hosted orogenic Au – were formed during at least two phases of regional thermotectonism that have been identified in the TSFTB. However, all of the major gold deposits/mineralisations are closely related to region-wide structural breaks and many of them are controlled by large-scale, high-strain zones. With the sinking of the new No. 3 Shaft and the increasing depth and northward movement of the mining operations, improved ventilation of the mine workings became necessary and it was decided to sink a new upcast ventilation shaft midway between No. 2 Shaft and No. 3 Shaft.The shaft is finished to 16 ft. internal diameter and connects with the mine workings at the 2,600-ft. level. It is lined with unreinforced Concrete approximately 12 in. thick. The shaft sinking routine was drilling, blasting and mucking by hand using a 27-cub. ft. capacity bucket. The concrete lining was poured in conjunction with the sinking and was normally finished within 30 to 50 ft. of the shaft bottom.

Traditional kinematic and statistical analyses of geological structure for geotechnical engineering applications, while considered industry standard practice, have some limitations and unrealistic assumptions. An improved approach involves a discrete fracture network (DFN), a numerical model that explicitly represents how defects may be spatially distributed through the rock mass. The DFN technique utilises the structural data in stochastic analyses to give a range of possible models used for visualisation and stability analyses.The early development of the DFN approach was largely associated with modelling fractured hydrocarbon reservoirs and nuclear waste isolation programs. With recent improvements to computational power it has become recognised internationally as a valuable tool for modelling some geomechanical problems encountered when designing excavations in fractured rock masses. For tunnelling or slope stability projects DFN modelling provides visualisation of a rock mass and identification of likely failure mechanisms.This paper presents a suite of DFN modelling undertaken for the design of a tunnel within the Ashfield Shale unit of the Sydney Basin, Australia. The necessary input parameters and derivation of these, along with the importance of both an accurate engineering geology model and validation of the synthetic fracture network are demonstrated. Multiple realisations of the DFN were analysed to provide an indication of the number and volume of unstable blocks for the proposed tunnel geometry, enhancing support design. The matte-metal-equilibria in the system Pb-Cu-S have been studied at temperatures between 720 and 920¦C by direct sampling and D.T.A. methods. These results are compared with those of other workers. The applications of such data to a continuous copper drossing process, and to a number of other metallurgical processes are discussed.

"The primary objective of this paper is to demonstrate a different approach to predicting and verifying mechanical sampling system precision. Early in the year 2011 an experiment was conducted to evaluate the sampling precision being obtained by a three-stage falling-stream mechanical sampling system for coal owned and operated by Peabody Energy. This system collects samples from lots averaging approximately 14000 t being loaded onto rail cars at a flow rate averaging about 9000 t/h. In phase 1 of the experiment, a total of 60 increments were collected in a two day period at preassigned intervals using a cross-belt sampler located on a conveyor belt feeding a silo upstream of the sampling system under evaluation. Coal variability parameters were calculated from the resulting laboratory analysis data using the gauge-invariant fractal model developed by the author.Estimates of precision of the three-stage system as a function of the number of increments were calculated using the variability parameters determined in phase 1. In phase 2 of the experiment, duplicate samples of 30 lots of coal were taken by the three-stage sampling system, enabling calculations of the precision being achieved by the system. Phase 2 precision estimates are in reasonable agreement with those of phase 1. Conclusions drawn from the experiment include the following: Experimental variograms or the equivalent correlograms are essential in understanding sampling issues and for designing a sampling system to meet specific precision requirements. Consensus coal sampling standards provided by ISO and ASTM may be improved by treating all stages of a mechanical sampling system as æsamplingÆ rather than considering downstream sampling stages as æsample preparationÆ, to be treated in a separate part of the document. The coal industry would profit from use of methodology for routinely monitoring the overall measurement precision and the precision of the individual components of measurement: sampling, sample preparation and laboratory testing. ABSTRACTFor the binary system copper-lead two relationsEquation 1andEquation 2have been derived for the activities of copper and lead at compositions and absolute temperatures within the liquid region of the phase diagram.These relations give, with greater accuracy than is given by previously published relations, the activity-composition temperature variations for all regions of the phase diagram of interest to metallurgists.These relations are essentially simple forms of the Margules equations but with linear temperature dependence applied to their coefficients. This has been done in such a manner that a phase diagram obtained from these relations agrees well with the data available for this system. The methods of obtaining the relations and constructing a phase diagram from them are both given in detail. The enthalpies and entropies of mixing are compared with those derived by other methods.

Pillar extraction carried out using various methods (split and lift, Wongawilli and Old Ben) involves the formation of narrow fenders (commonly 7 m of coal) formed by driving "splits" for lifting off with a continuous miner. The strata above a split and fender adjacent to the goaf consists of a cantilever beam (usually >3 m thick) that extends from the solid coal and bridges across the fender. Lifting off the fender from the split in safe conditions depends upon the bridging capability of the cantilever and the fender strength. The nature and competence of the immediate and near roof, the support capability of the coal fender and the presence of faults and or joints can adversely affect the bridging behaviour of the cantilever. Insufficient knowledge of these parameters can lead to extraction under dangerous conditions. Remnants of fenders ("stooks") also support the cantilever and their dimensions are critical to obtain regular caving and goaf falls. Stook area, goaf roof span and roof stand-up time after lifting can be related and only a relatively small increase in stook area of 10-15 m2 can lead to a significantly increased stand-up time, especially under a massive roof. Such conditions strongly influence the re- distribution of abutment stresses and can create increased outbye pillar loading. Based on detailed underground geotechnical investigations, it is concluded that strata caveability, roof cantilever behaviour, fender H:W ratio and remnant stook size are all critical parameters for successful and safe pillar extraction.

Since 2001, the AMIRA P420 gold processing technology project series has been studying the recovery of gold using gravity devices, with particular emphasis on the centrifugal units, Knelson and Falcon concentrators. Recent advancements in understanding the detonation process are noteworthy, but they are still based on somewhat hypothetical situations. The actual variables that are essential parts of normal blasting practice have not yet been taken into account in such treatments. These include the various initiation practices employed to detonate a column of explosive, from single point initiation to multi-point initiation in blast holes, and the effect on detonation characteristics of both detonators and explosives under multi-deck and multi-hole blasting conditions. The in-the-hole velocity of detonation (VOD) of an industrial explosive is dependent on explosive’s charge diameter and blasthole diameter. The relationship between blasthole diameter and VOD provides a fundamental guideline to the rate of energy conversion and energy release within the detonation front on the interaction of explosives with the confining medium.The in-the-hole VOD of explosives was measured at four experimental sites in India for different blasthole diameters, ie 150 mm to 311 mm, but for identical explosive composition being same particle size, density, viscosity and loaded into blastholes with the same degree of confinement. The results of the studies demonstrated that there is definite relationship in in-the-hole VOD of the explosive and the diameter of the blast hole. The study also confirmed that the explosives initiated with concentrated boosters yielded higher VOD in comparison to those explosives that were initiated with multi-point priming. The measured increase in VOD of explosives for increasing diameter of holes was up to 24 per cent. The rate of change in in-the-hole VOD of explosives increases with increasing blasthole diameter. It can be further stated that the in-the-hole VOD of the explosive reaches a fairly constant value after reaching a limiting/threshold diameter of 311 mm.

Particular reference is made to recent coal drilling operations by the New South Wales Department of Mines. The study is restricted to the onshore portion of the Sydney Basin.

In many mineral processing operations, the reported production figures for an accounting period may not make the best use of available data. While most of the mathematical approaches, such as check-in/check-out, mass balancing, used in effective metallurgical accounting strategies are well understood, the sources and magnitude of measurement errors generally are not. As part of the æAMIRA P754-Metal Accounting and ReconciliationÆ project, a study was undertaken at the Northparkes copper/gold concentrator near Parkes, New South Wales to examine the data used in their concentrator metallurgical accounting system. This paper summarises the results of a detailed examination of the mass measurement systems around the concentrator as well as the primary sampling system used for grade estimation. The goal of this work was to develop practical techniques to quantify the error (ie both accuracy and precision) of the measured metal accounting information. With this information, statistical confidence levels for this data can then be calculated. If the errors are small, the effect of error in each piece of measured data can then be propagated to other calculated production figures such as recovery and feed grade using a statistical technique called æthe propagation of errorÆ.

This paper describes the test work, process design, commissioning and operation of a processing system at the Ergo gold operation that improves the extraction efficiency from gold tailings material. The improvement in recovery is derived from the separation of the gold contained within the sulfides of the tailings material and a dedicated process stream to recover that gold.The sulfides are separated by means of a flotation circuit and that resulting concentrate is subjected to a regrind of below 20 ¦m to enable a greater liberation of the gold. The ultra-fine material is then subjected to a dedicated leach circuit to recover the now exposed gold particles.The case study is an example of the challenges of introducing new technology and methodologies to a well-established operation and thereby attaining improved efficiencies and tangible business benefits.CITATION:Ebell, M B and Capstick, D, 2013. The former Gwynfynydd gold mine is located within the heart of the Snowdonia National Park, North Wales, United Kingdom. The black shale-hosted quartz reefs have intermittently produced more than 50 000 ounces of gold since 1863. Its most recent period of operation by Welsh Gold PLC was between 1992 and 1999 when it extracted 10 000 tonnes annually from a total resource base of 180 000 tonnes. A historical mining grade of 15 grammes/tonne was recovered from the Chidlaw Reef on which all production was based. Erratically distributed gold pockets hosted in the footwall zone of a 3 - 6 m wide quartz reef characterise the mineralisation. The gold exhibits a high-nugget effect and as a consequence the accurate determination of tonnage and grade was difficult. Production was undertaken by overhand shrinkage stoping. Due to its location within a National Park certain environmental constraints were placed on the operators. The principal requirement of planning permission was that processing should take place above ground and not involve chemicals. As a result, an underground mill based on physical separation methods was constructed in response to these environmental constraints. Much of the mine discharge is related to the flow of rainwater through the workings from surface openings on the reefs. Discharge from the underground milling facility was enhanced in various metals, particularly zinc, though was reduced to legally acceptable levels using liming tanks prior to discharge into the River Mawddach. The company was required to monitor and treat all water discharged from the mine before it reached the river. The mine closed in 1999, since which time a tip re-processing has continued as part of an environmental remediation and gold supply program.
