A common practice in the mining industry is to decompose the planning process into different tasks, so the overall process and specific schedules can be constructed easily. Nevertheless, currently there are some adverse effects, such as not capturing the real value of a project by not taking into account the construction of several underground drifts and general infrastructure. Then the common practice is to compute mining sequence and cut-off grade profiles over the life of the mine without constitutively integrating the development schedule as a means to measure the constructability of a given mine design and sequence. Thus, the investigation summarised in this paper shows a novel, integrative way of treating an underground mine sequence and production schedule while considering drift development scheduling. Moreover, it is thought that, because of this original model, the whole underground production scheduling exercise must concentrate on combining the development and the production scheduling to compute a robust and a feasible production schedule.In order to quantify the effect of the conventional way of viewing the planning, the concept of the building information model (BIM) needs to be used, which was postulated by Charles Eastman and has been used extensively since the late 1970s. BIM takes other aspects of a project into account, considering at the same time the spatial relationships, quantities and properties of building components, but especially some kind of model visualisation, which is the advantage to be incorporated. This paper presents the basis for an optimisation model that allows for defining the sequence of the mining development so that the production plan can be achieved. For this, the model considers the space dimensions, time, pattern or strategy, cost or benefit, precedence and resources available. Tests were performed considering a block caving and sublevel open stoping method. Finally these tests showed the main conclusion, that production sequence changes when the building capacity is considered.

Frequency of reports on premature failure of rock bolts and cable bolts have increased in past two decades. Such a failure threatens both the safety of underground mine workers and the economic viability of the operations. Herein, we report on analysis of rock bolts and cable bolts failed recently in three underground mines in Australia. Magnetic particle inspection (MPI) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) techniques were used to study the failed bolts. MPI showed a number of subcritical cracks on the surface of the bolts. The majority of the cracks in both cable bolts and rock bolts were initiated from the base of ribs (indentation) where the stress concentration was high. SEM examinations showed tearing topography surface (TTS) in all failed rock bolts and cable bolts. These indicated that the failure occurred through hydrogen assisted stress corrosion cracking (HISCC). It is well known in the industry that good classification system performance is vital to efficient ball mill circuit performance. But what is meant by good classification system performance, and how is it achieved? Unfortunately, the perceived complexity of classification systems, and the day-to-day time demands placed on the practicing metallurgist, all too often put the low-hanging fruit of classification system optimisation in the ‘I’ll do it later’ basket. Additionally, lingering confusion about basics such as the relationship between circulating load ratio and ball mill circuit performance makes the optimisation objective seem nebulous to both plant metallurgist and designer.Some of this confusion can be eliminated by taking a step back from the overwhelming detail of sharpness of separation curves, circulating load ratios, cyclone feed pressures, vortex and apex sizes etc, and focusing on the purpose or function of the classification system – to apply mill power to particles that need further size reduction! The classification system efficiency (CSE) metric captures how well the classification system is performing its function with two quick and easy size distribution analyses.Once CSE is understood and implemented as the optimisation criteria, well-tested methods for improving CSE can be implemented and quickly measured at plant scale to give confidence that the right change was made.This paper will describe CSE and how it is measured in practice. Next, a guide for improving CSE through manipulation of design and operating variables in the classification system will be provided. In 2019 the Chinese Ministry of Ecology and Environment issued guidelines promoting the implementation of ultra-low emissions in the iron and steelmaking industry. These guidelines aim to drive improvements in air quality through the reduction of particulate matter (PM), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxide (NOx). Secondly, it also represents an initial means to commence decarbonisation of the industry. The ultra-low emissions guidelines propose that well over 80 per cent of China’s production capacity will achieve these targets by 2025. In response, many sintering operations have implemented numerous improvements to the process that result in significant efficiency gains. Of note is the adoption of deep bed sintering where, with some modifications to equipment, the sintering bed depth is increased resulting in sizable reductions of SO2 and NOx emissions. This paper will also provide an overview of the requirements to introduce deep-bed sintering into an operation and highlight test work completed which quantifies the resultant reduction in emissions.

The objective of this paper was to determine if recent advances in numerical electromagnetic wave propagation modelling techniques could be used to study the propagation of GPS signals over arbitrary terrain. Specifically the effects of diffraction and multipath were to be modelled accurately for propagation over arbitrary terrain surfaces defined by a digital terrain model. Ideally the model was to be in three dimensions and cover an area of a few square kilometres with a simulation height of a few hundred metres. Simulations were to run on current technology PC's with run times less than a few hours. A relatively new technique that involves a numerical solution to the Parabolic Equations can be used to solve for two-dimensional propagation over any type of terrain. The PE provides a direct solution of Maxwell's wave equations by approximating the Helmholtz scalar wave equation. This technique does not rely on the study of individual ray paths as used in the Geometrical Theory of Diffraction (GTD). It was decided to develop a two dimensional Parabolic Equation code, using the Fourier Split/Step method that allowed propagation over arbitrary terrain (; ; ). The model boundary conditions assumed that the satellite transmission was a plane wave, and that the lower boundary was a perfect reflector. Propagation simulations from the model accurately provide the amplitude and phase of the propagated plane wave at all points within the model domain. The PE model was used to study the effects of diffraction and multipath caused by various types of terrain commonly found in an open cut mining environment. The study of diffraction errors was relatively simple, because we are simply concerned with amplitude of the signal as it diffracts about an obstacle. If the amplitude is above the level receivable by a GPS receiver then the diffraction error can be obtained from the geometry of the terrain obstacle. The study of multipath is more complex, as the computed phase from the PE model is ambiguous and the presence of multipath can only be inferred. Thus the absolute magnitude of the nmltipath error is not currently determinable, though the results of some new work is shown here. This paper shows that diffraction effects can cause significant errors in range. It also shows the effects that multipath has on the received amplitude of the signal and the received phase of the signal. A discussion is made of further work that is presently underway that will allow the direct determination of the multipath error by comparing the ambiguous phase with a reference phase.

This paper presents the results of research work conducted to assess if aqueous solutions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) can be used to treat roaster calcine leach residues such that recovery of gold in this material can be achieved with subsequent application of the thiocyanate (SCN-) leaching system. The project is mainly aimed at assessing an alternative use for sulfur dioxide gas generated during flotation concentrate roasting. The calcine leach residue sample used in the study contained 2.56 g/t gold. The reason for this high level of residual gold is thought to be due to gold surface passivation by thin iron oxide films, presence of gold in solid solution with refractory iron oxides and encapsulation of gold in the structure of these iron oxides.The study was conducted in three stages. The first stage was the characterisation of a sample from a roaster calcine leach residue. The second stage in the project was a set of leaching tests to assess the feasibility of using aqueous solutions of sulfur dioxide to reductively dissolve refractory iron oxide mineral phases contained in the calcine. The final objective was to assess the efficiency of thiocyanate, a gold complexing ligand stable under acidic and oxidative conditions, to extract gold liberated during sulfur dioxide leaching.The study showed that the reductive sulfur dioxide treatment of the calcine leach residues followed by oxidative thiocyanate leaching to extract gold was not a particularly efficient process as only around 20 per cent gold could be extracted. Leaching the calcine residues by any of these systems separately also extracted the same amount of gold (12 - 14 per cent) implying that irrespective of the solution potential, the acidity helps dissolution of gold encapsulating minerals, mostly hematite, but at a very slow rate. The findings on the topic in the literature and during this study show the requirement for further technical investigations and economical analyses on two cases. The first case is to roast gold concentrates to produce magnetite rather than hematite followed by sulfur dioxide and thiocyanate leaching of magnetite containing calcines. The second case is to apply a magnetic concentration process to conventional roast-cyanidation calcine residues to produce a gold-rich magnetite concentrate that can be further treated with sulfur dioxide followed by thiocyanate leaching.For both cases, the best evaluation of the sulfur dioxide leach system in extracting residual gold from calcine leach residues will require a detailed economic analysis to find out the balance between the value of the gold recovered and the loss of revenue from acid production. There are a number of roasters that do not produce acid. The Witwatersrand Supergroup is host to the world’s largest gold deposits. The location, quantity, grade, continuity and other geological characteristics of a Mineral Resource are either known, estimated from specific geological evidence and knowledge, or interpreted from a well constrained and portrayed geological model. Establishing such a model is an integral part of the evaluation process in the Anglogold Ashanti (AGA) group, and is referred to as a Geoscience Business Model for the mining operations. The geological model established over the years has relied on detailed descriptions of the mineralisation, and understanding of the regional and local geology of the Witwatersrand sediments, in the West Wits and Free State goldfields. The processes of data collection in regard to underground stope and developing mapping, structural and sedimentological mapping, and the geological inputs to mine planning systems are described, together with aspects of drilling, sampling, grade control, and data management. Anglogold Ashanti’s Geoscience Department employs a complex and unique process to generate the Mineral Resource, including a 3D geological structure model of the orebodies which are usually highly faulted, and a robust mineralisation/facies model on which the decisions about domain boundaries are established. A Mineral Resource Inventory System (MRIS) has a dynamic graphic interface to the resource database that is used for compiling the resource statement. It is also used to determine the gold-called-for, as well as short and long-term planning. A unique estimation process using the extensive closely spaced stope face sampling database and the more widely spaced surface drilling information is used in combination in the Macro Co-Kriging estimation. The use of different support sizes in the C0-Kriging process is preceded by the equally unique ‘clusterisation’ and ‘acceptorisation’ procedures by which the data are quality controlled and assured prior to their use in the kriging process. The Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimates are classified according to the SAMREC code through a method that ensures that they are compliant, auditable, transparent and reconcilable with previous Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve statements.

Backfill is usually considered a necessary evil that contributes little to the principal objective of the operation, ore production. Consequently, it is relegated to an auxiliary role in the operation with minimal equipment and resource allocation in planning and is only superficially considered during feasibility studies. In many mines, the inadequacy of the design and operation of the backfill system ultimately leads to frequent delays, excessive costs and, in the worst cases, major instabilities which result in reduced ore production and lost or unrecoverable ore reserves. The primary objective of backfill is to prevent the progressive deterioration of mined out excavations. With the exception of narrow vein operations, it is too weak to alter the mining induced stress regime and control stress concentrations caused by stope extractions. However, the direct benefits of backfill include the possibility to consider a wider range of mining methods, recovery of 100 per cent of the planned resource and the selection of a stoping sequence that minimises the regional stability problems that cause production shortfalls in the later years of mine production. Indirectly, backfill is a practical means of solving other issues, such as waste disposal, that impact the viability of mining. In Australia, the geotechnical conditions of many mines are becoming more difficult and increased attention to the importance of backfill is warranted. This paper describes realistic aspects of backfilling and the positive impacts a well co-ordinated fill system can have on mining activities as a whole. Examples are presented where an integrated approach to backfill systems have offered significant benefits to the operation.

Environmental regulators are increasingly adopting risk-based approaches to protect aquatic ecosystems. The Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council (ANZECC) and the Agriculture and Resource Management Council of Australia and New Zealand (ARMCANZ) (2000) introduced a risk-based approach to water quality guidelines that use decision frameworks to adapt water quality guidelines to local environmental conditions. Environmental quality objectives are no longer a simple ‘pass or fail’ number such as restricting total suspended solids (TSS) concentration to a specified limit for a particular rainfall event. This approach ignores spatial and temporal variability and the complexity of aquatic ecosystems. The risk-based approach establishes levels where adverse effects may occur. If these objectives are not met, further risk-based investigation is undertaken to assess the potential impact to the ecosystem. Klohn Crippen Berger (KCB) developed a dynamic simulation to predict the variability of sediment discharges, which is applicable for risk-based impact assessment of aquatic ecosystems. The application of the methodology over the life of a mine site is illustrated using a proposed South Pacific mine.The site location is in extremely rugged terrain with a high annual rainfall of approximately 4.7 m. There were two major sediment ponds proposed to reduce sediment discharges. A sediment and hydrology model was developed in Goldsim to provide daily estimates of run-off flows and sediment concentrations. A modified algorithm based on the Australian water balance model was created and incorporated into the Goldsim model and calibrated using recorded field data.The sediment module was developed based on a Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) assessment, an annual prediction of soil loss over a catchment. A land-use type erosion vector was developed for different land-use types and for each of the subcatchments, a subcatchment erodibility vector was calculated. This vector and the daily rainfall erosivity factor were used to estimate the daily soil loss. The estimated soil loss and the modelled run-off yielded predictions of daily sediment concentrations. Finally, a sediment settling module was used to predict the daily efficiency of the sediment ponds and hence discharged sediment concentrations.The results of this modelling form the first part of a quantitative risk-based assessment into suspended solids impacts. The second part is the assessment of the effects of these predicted TSS concentrations on aquatic ecology. As part of the feedback-loop required in a risk management framework, if the environmental quality objectives are not met then further management decisions and actions may be required to reduce the risks presented by suspended solids. This may include modifications to: the mine-development plan; construction techniques and scheduling; processing techniques; rehabilitation strategies; or hard-engineering solutions such as sediment basins or flocculation.The Goldsim water-balance model provides a quick and efficient method of testing potential remedial actions on predicted sediment loads and concentrations. In combination with a cost-benefit assessment, options for reducing sediment releases from the mine site can be effectively and quantitatively compared thereby providing mine operators with a basis for decision-making. Regulators can also be satisfied that potential impacts to aquatic ecology have been comprehensively assessed and the necessary management decisions have been initiated to limit risk to the environment.CITATION:Ind, M and Usher, B, ?2014. PT Freeport IndonesiaÆs Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mine is the new underground block caving mine within the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS) which started production in mid-2000. The DOZ will produce 25 000 tpd using mechanised block cave mining method and will be the fourth underground mine opened within the EESS deposit. A review of the DOZ extraction bolting design was conducted in November 2000. The aim of this review was to re-evaluate the effectiveness of the current design in relation to bolt length and spacing and to challenge some questions about the technical background of the design. For instance, the influence of the rock condition on the design. To review this bolting design, several books and papers are reviewed and several experienced people have been contacted to give their opinion. The methodology used for this review is:reviewing the technical background of current design; collecting ideas and alternatives; collecting data from books and personal communication and conducting analysis; and conclusion and proposed design.

Roasting of refractory gold ores has been a commercial process for many years. Improvements in design of fluidised bed roasting technologies and low capital and operating costs compared with other refractory treatment processes can potentially make roasting a viable option.However, gold extraction from roasted ores carried out on laboratory scale equipment often invariably yields lower recoveries than other processes such as bio-oxidation or pressure oxidation. Non-optimal laboratory roasting conditions can incorrectly write roasting off as a process option.Low gold recoveries from the cyanidation of calcine products from roasting can often be attributed to roasting conditions not favouring gold liberation and agglomeration processes, particularly if lockups of elements such as arsenic are being pursued for environmental reasons.This paper reviews the conditions favoured for gold agglomeration and accessibility of gold to cyanide, test conditions to achieve gold liberation and agglomeration on laboratory scale and designs that incorporate staged decomposition and roasting to make roasting a more commercial option.CITATION:Aylmore, M G and de Klerk, L W, 2013. Hydroseparation (http://www.cnt-mc.com) was used to concentrate sized fractions (from <38 ¦m to 150 ¦m) of various ore products ahead of carbon-in-pulp (CIP)-treatment. The resulting size-by-size concentrates were mounted as monolayer polished sections and subjected to automated unattended precious metal searches by image analysis (see Lastra, Wilson and Cabri, 1999). Systematic variations in Au-deportment permit quantification of Au reporting as discrete grains from fresh-feed through to pressure oxidation (POX)- and CIP-feed. Application of hydroseparation, image analysis and assays to characterising tailings (from <10 ¦m to 106 ¦m) from four mine sites is also described. Results are encouraging enough to predict that the combination of hydroseparation (HS) and automated image analysis could become a standard methodology for study of precious metal ores and metallurgical products.

The Athena gold deposit was discovered in 2007 by Gold Fields Australia Ltd, at the St Ives Gold Mine, 35 km southeast of Kambalda, Western Australia. Gold anomalism was identified in sheared Paringa Basalt as a result of a regional scale aircore drilling program, in association with geophysics. In the 18 months following discovery, the deposit was intensely drilled and by June 2009, it was announced that the Athena deposit contained an ore reserve of 1.7 Mt @ 5.6 g/t for 316 koz. This was followed by a feasibility study, and as a result mine development commenced in November 2009.The Athena mineralisation is hosted in a discrete, north-south striking, steep to moderately dipping shear zone within the southwest dipping Paringa Basalt. Vein intensity has a strong correlation to grade and vein type varies from early thin quartz-albite-sulfide (pyrite and/or pyrrhotite) shear parallel veins to strong brecciation and irregular veining with quartz-albite-actinolite-biotite-pyrrhotite infill. The geology preproduction process developed at the Argo mine was refined and improved following a business improvement project. The aim of the process is to construct detailed geological interpretations prior to development allowing informed mining decisions to be made. The process delivers significant cost savings and revenue enhancements.The development of macroscopic classification scheme was critical to determine ore or waste in the early phases of mining. The Style of Deformation, Alteration and Veining (SAV) Code was the result, and has been enhanced as greater geological knowledge is gained over time.

This paper discusses the processes of planning a new operation, with particular emphasis on block caving and its Northparkes adaptation. As well as applying advanced technologies, here also is the opportunity to develop the art and science of block caving for its application to a wider range of geotechnical conditions than previously Envisaged.

The Croydon Gold Mine is located in northwest Queensland and is a joint venture between Central Coast Exploration N.L. and Pancontinental Mining Ltd. The mining operation commenced in 1987 and consists of satellite open pit mines feeding a central Carbon-In-Pulp gold Treatment Plant. The gold mineralisation is hosted by quartz veins within the Croydon Volcanic Group and the Esmeralda Granite, a cogenetic igneous suite of Middle Proterozoic age. The mineralisation comprises gold and silver with associated basemetals. The gold and silver electrum occurs as extremely fine free grains. The gold distribution is heterogenous occuring across the full vein width, or restricted to the footwall or hangingwall. The average mineral resource grade is 3.5 g/t. The deposits are all hard rock and mining is carried out by drill and blast technique. All mining activity is carried out by a mining contractor. Mining is by a selective mining method which entails the drilling, blasting and extraction of the hangingwall waste prior to orebody extraction.

Today, it is accepted that rock fragmentation by blasting affects loading and hauling operations, and also directly influences on downstream processes such as crushing and grinding. In this research, the influence of rock fragmentation by blasting on the performance of three mills at Gol-e-Gohar iron ore mine No 1 was studied. Firstly, the fragmentation of conventional blast patterns in iron ore (5 × 6 m) was studied using image analysis and the performances of three mills were monitored. Then, a new blast pattern (4 × 5 m) was designed and nine blasts were carried out using this pattern. Mineralogy is the link between ore formation and ore extraction. It is the most fundamental component of geomet programs, and the most important aspect of a life-of-project approach to mineral resource projects. Understanding orebodies is achieved by understanding the mineralogy and texture of the materials, throughout the process, because minerals hold the information required to unlock the value they contain. Geomet mineralogy programs absolutely require the appropriate expertise and at least three steps of mineral characterisation prior to using semi-automated or other methods: field examination, thorough core logging, and optical microscopy. Economic geological inputs for orebody characterisation are necessary for orebody understanding, and are exemplified by current research in the Zambian Copperbelt, where revised sequence stratigraphy and understanding of alteration, metasomatism and metamorphism can be used to predict topical issues at mine sites. Environmental inputs for sustainability characterisation are demonstrated by recent work on tailings from the Leadville, Colorado, USA area, including linking mineralogy to water quality issues. Risk assessments need to take into account the technical uncertainties around geological variability and mineral extractability, and mineralogy is the only metric that can be used to make this risk contribution.CITATION:Olson Hoal, K, Woodhead, J and Smith, K S, 2013. In 1984 a new Regional Geological Mapping Program (RGMP) was commenced by the Geological Survey of Queensland (GSQ); the new program was in response to the withdrawal of the Bureau of Mineral Resources from regional mapping. Areas for mapping were selected in northern and south-eastern Queensland on the basis of potential for mineral discoveries, level of company interest, inaccuracies in the first edition mapping and interests of other organisations (government and universities) in joint projects.Geological provinces of particular interest in northern Queensland are the Hodgkinson Basin, parts of the Georgetown Inlier not covered by earlier BMR-GSQ mapping, Broken River Embayment, Burdekin Basin, Lolworth-Ravenswood Block, Campwyn Block and Anakie Inlier. The 1:250,000 sheets covering these areas of interest are shown in Figure 1 including those already completed, those in progress and those planned for future investigation.A flow chart showing the various phases for RGMP projects is shown in Figure 2. Data collection has two facets: (i) field recording and (ii) office work including air photo interpretation, study of company reports, literature research, petrography and various laboratory studies. Two main strands of information collected are represented by a data base and compilation sheets. Compilation sheets are generally at 1:25,000 scale and are available for purchase. The current data base is very fragmentary and can be accessed only by direct contact with the relevant geologist or via written reports. A more accessible field data base is in the process of being introduced this year; this field data base (REGMAP) is based on standardised data recording and computer storage.

"In 2015 operations under the ownership and/or management of all Newmont Mining Corporation subsidiaries (Newmont) produced 5.7 Moz of gold and 619 Mlb of copper from mining operations in five countries, with well over 100 Mt of ore processed by various grinding technologies. Processing methods used in the extraction of metals include flotation, oxidation, conventional cyanidation and heap leaching. The grinding technologies applied in milling operations feeding metal recovery processes include conventional wet grinding semi-autogenous grinding (SAG), rod and ball, dry grinding, concentrate regrinding and ultra-fine grinding, and ball milling of high pressure grinding roll product. SAG/ball (SAB) configurations represent the dominant comminution flow sheet within the company and the circuit configurations employed include SAB, SABC-A, SABC-B and single-stage (SS) SAG milling, with SAG mill feed ranging from run-of-mine (ROM) ore through to secondary crusher product. The collective experiences earned from designing, operating and debottlenecking these various comminution circuits provide many lessons that can be applied to the design and optimisation of future operations.
