E. E. Russell Tratman, New York City (communication to the Secretary): Mr. Glenn's paper brings up again the question of the part played by coal-dust in colliery-explosions. In the discussion of Sir Frederick Abel's paper on " Accidents in Mines," read before the Institution of Civil Engineers,? much was said about the dangerous properties of coal-dust, and several instances were given of the successful use of a spray of water, water and compressed air, or exhaust-steam from an engine, to keep the mine SUEciently damp to prevent the formation of dust clouds. Methods of preventing shots from blowing out; of using water cartridges to prevent flame ; and of using lime cartridges, wedges and other means of breaking down the coal were also discussed. A FEW years ago, the writer encountered a, problem that, at first, seemed to be due to peculiar conditions affecting grain growth. Large cups made from heavy metal failed in the first drawing operation in the process of making seamless tubes. The metal, as cast, appeared to be sound and strong; it rolled successfully and withstood the first cupping operation, but on the first draw it failed, with a crystalline fracture. The failure appeared in the slightly worked part of the bottom of the cup, and microscopic examination revealed exceptionally large grains. Knowing the general conditions governing recrystallization of brass, which were later published by Matthewson and Phillips, an investigation was outlined with the idea of including various conditions under which new grains might form, and which would include the effect that a previous anneal might have upon the anneal following. These conditions were produced by annealing specimens of brass at five different temperatures, indenting them with a 10-inn. ball under four different pressures, and then reannealing at each of the five temperatures five specimens each of which had been annealed at one of the five temperatures.

IN most applied sciences there are two distinct methods of carrying out research and development work. One of these, the theoretical, attempts to solve problems that may arise and to predict facts of practical importance by the application of the various laws of science, the other, the experimental method, attempts to each the 'same goal by obtaining data and trying out various processes in the laboratory. Since individuals frequently find themselves better adapted for one or the other type of procedure, it is natural that -two groups should 'arise, both working toward the sane objective but with somewhat different points of view, although many in each group are thoroughly competent in both fields. Metallurgy, in particular, offers an excellent opportunity for a comparison of the two methods.

After months of negotiations, the U. S. has agreed to buy between 6000 and 7000 long tons of Bolivian tin now stockpiled at Peruvian and Chilean ports, at $1.175 per lb, f.o.b. South American Ports. Harry A. McDonald of the Reconstruction Finance Corp. signed the contract with Victor Andrade, Bolivian ambassador. The Mercantile Metals and Ore Corp., of New York City, acted as the agent of Bolivia's Banco Minero in negotiating the deal. The contract is a short term one. Throughout the talks, the U. S. refused to make a long term agreement because of the possibility that Bolivia will soon nationalize its mines. The Bolivians desired to sell the U. S. 18,000 tons during a one-year pact. The price agreed upon is roughly the same as with Malayan producers. In the meantime, American Smelting & Refining Co., signed over control of its operations to the Bolivian Government. The formal act of leasing the mines to the Bolivian Government follows the announcement last July by the company that it was closing operations because of high costs. Contract terms were not disclosed.

Even to outline the results of recent prospecting activity in Ontario would be a big undertaking, but it would be timely and, I hope, interesting to Institute members to review some generalities regarding the work of the prospector and then to discuss in some detail the growth of Ontario's most promising prospect area, the Swayze district, where serious mining operations are already under way. Probably no one writing about prospectors and pros¬pecting can resist hoping that his article will not reach the eyes of a certain portion of the uninformed general public and cause a further influx of "prospective prospectors" into any given area. The MANUFACTURE of Iron in the PROVINCE of Quebec. The St. Maurice Forges.—The deposits of iron-ore in the St. Maurice district, in the rear of Three Rivers, were probably known to the Indians and .Jesuits, but it is not till 1667 that any discovery is reported. The affairs of the colony were then in the control of the " West India Company," who amongst other monopolies had a right to all mines and minerals." Specimens of the iron-ore were examined in Quebec. in 1668 by the Sieur la Potardière, who reported unfavorably on them. In 1671, Louis de Buade, Comte de Frontenac, was appointed governor of La Nouvelle France ; and in the original manuscripts relating to his administration some allusion is occasionally found to the St. Maurice iron mines.? In a letter to the Imperial Government, dated 2d November, 1672, he says: "The iron mine of which I have already spoken is of great consequence. I have visited it myself, in order that I may be enabled to give a more accurate account of its nature. (Cleveland Meeting, October, 1912.) ALMOST half a century has passed since the Siemens brothers, after tedious and costly experiments, finally began the manufacture of open-hearth steel. The furnace of that time was very small, having a hearth-capacity of from 3 to 4 tons, and we can appreciate the wonderful development that has taken place in those 50 years by the knowledge that to-day furnaces of 50 times the original capacity are in operation. As the new steel process assumed importance, and furnaces began to grow in number and in size, a question arose, to which no satisfactory answer has ever been given, and that was: ?What is the safe and economical limit of the open-hearth furnace?" Various stopping-places have been suggested, and 20, 30, 40, and 50 tons have each been advocated, but all such arbitrary restrictions have been passed, and 60 tons would probably represent the average furnace, although in a few instances from 70 to 80 tons are regularly tapped into one ladle. The furnaces which are the subject of the present paper have gone far beyond even these limits, and since, in my opinion, they mark another step in the progress of open-hearth steel, they will be considered fairly and frankly, in order that those to whom the matter may be of interest may be able to judge and form their own Conclusions. Short accounts of the work of these furnaces have appeared from time to time in various technical journals, of which the following is a brief résumé. These furnaces are the property of the Phoenix Iron Co., of Phoenixville, Pa., and their distinctive and important feature is, that they charge to twice the capacity of one ladle, and tap simultaneously into two ladles, with a device for controlling the flow into either. In this way the capacity of the furnace is not limited, as formerly, but heats of any size within the capacity of two ladles may be charged.

M ETHODS by which Americanization is developed among the foreign workers at the mines in the United States, with particular reference to mines of the Pennsylvania coal region, were discussed in a most constructive way at the Wilkes-Barre Meeting of the Institute. Arthur Notman, of the Phelps Dodge Corpn., as chairman, guided the discussion. Americanization was defined by E. E. Bach, !chairman of the Institute's Sub-committee on Americanization, who said: "Americanization applies either to the native-born or foreign-born and is that process of assimilation which guarantees the full functioning of American citizenship. Naturalization papers merely entitle one to the privileges of citizenship."

At the last meeting of the Institute, several contributions were made to the subject of miners' aid funds. Such matters will always form important factors in the administration of large industrial enterprises. From the frequently remote and isolated position of mining properties, it is a subject that often forces itself upon the attention of the mining engineer. Local conditions are usually so variable that no single method can be found equally well adapted to all localities. At the same time, a study of different types is often suggestive and valuable, and it is with this in view that these notes are presented. The Miners' Fund of New Almaden is a remarkably successful example of what may be done for miners by a wise and at the same time firm management, by simply directing their own efforts and without incurring any great expense to the stockholders,—a practical consideration not without importance in most cases. The technical sessions, excepting the Sunday afternoon and evening sessions of the Mineral Industry Education Division (see the M.I.E.D. program) will be held in the Engineering Societies Building. The "All-Institute" luncheon on Monday will be at the Commodore Hotel; the Annual Banquet and President's Reception, the Smoker, and the Informal Dance will be at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. The dinners of the Petroleum Division and the Institute of Metals Division will be at the Roosevelt Hotel.

THE raw material men in all industries, and copper is no exception, are accustomed to think of them- selves as the whole show, and not without justice, for if there were no copper mines the world would have no copper. Nevertheless, many different things costing money and resulting in profits must be done to their product before it is ready for the world's use. In other words, they are making the frequent mistake of Chinking in terms of partial costs. Nobody really uses electrolytic copper. Possibly that is why nobody seems willing to pay anything for it. The manufacturers, being canny, do not buy any more electrolytic than they feel that they can work up and sell profitably, although they like to make the raw material men Chink that they will take all that can be produced. This is a state of affairs that has aroused my sympathy and curiosity, and has induced me to study the financial history of the copper wire and brass industry of the country or such portion of it as publishes any records readily available to the curious minded. THE idea of burning blast-furnace gases directly in gas-engines, instead of under steam-boilers, as had previously been done, was first put into practice barely ten years ago, almost simultaneously in Great Britain, Germany and Belgium. The pioneers of this movement made their first experiments with small engines. After these experiments had given satisfactory results, and it had been shown that the thermal value of the poor blast-furnace gases, in spite of defective scrubbing, could with safety be directly transformed into mechanical work in the gas-engine, there very soon arose a considerable demand for gas-engines of large power, similar to the large steam-engines employed in metallurgical works. In face of these sudden requirements, the gas-engine builders were placed in a difficult position; for up to that time the gas-motor was considered as suitable for small engines only, and it was generally believed that the limit of size bad been attained with 100 to 150 effective h.p. in a single cylinder. Manufacturers of gas-motors, however, did not underrate the advantages offered by this new field for their manufactures, and it so happened that in Germany the Berlin-Anhaltische Maschinenbau-Gesellschaft, of Dessau, was the first to undertake the construction of a 600-h.p. two-cycle gas-engine, with two cyl¬inders of the Oechelhäuser-Junkers type, for the Hoerder Mining & Smelting Company. The engine was started in 1898, and, with a few improvements and alterations, is still working satisfactorily. This engine worked with astonishingly high of efficiency, considering the period. COLD work destroys long-range order, as was first observed by Dehlinger and Graf.1 Dahl2 showed that the mechanical disordering caused by cold work produces changes in those properties that are affected by long-range order. The existence of order has a marked effect on tile manner in which an alloy deforms and therefore on its mechanical properties.L' The relation between order and deformation behavior however, is only beginning to be understood. Seemann and G1ander4 suggested that cold work reduces an ordered alloy to a kind of gruel of antiphase domains. According to Cottrell,5 superdis-locations and pairs of dislocations in a slip plane connected by a strip of anti-phase domain boundary provide deformation mechanisms which do not change the state of order. In general, however, slip may be expected to produce new domain boundaries and destroy order if dislocations move on intersecting planes or cut through existing domain boundaries. The yield strength of an ordered alloy may pass through a maximum with decreasing domain size.5"7 The reduction of domain size resulting from cold work may, therefore, lead to a maximum in strength properties. Flinn8 suggests that dislocations can climb by short-range diffusion during deformation and thus can generate domain boundaries not only on slip planes, but also on other planes which will be those with the lowest domain-boundary energy. It has long been known that the rate of strain hardening of an alloy in the ordered state is larger than in the disordered state.3'9 Also the slip bands in ordered CU3, AU10 and Ni3Mn" are finer than in the disordered alloys. The stress which causes initial yielding in Cu,Au passes through a maximum with decreasing domain size.6'12 A maximum has also been observed in the hardness of ordered Ni3Mn as a function of strain.' These observations suggest, but do not prove, that domain size reduction occurs during deformation. According to Fisher13 slip destroys short-range order and thus the strength of an alloy is related to the degree of short-range order present. Rudman and Averbach14 and Averbach et a1.,15 demonstrated that cold work reduces short-range order in copper-gold and gold-silver alloys. Destruction of long-range and short-range order by cold work implies slip on an appreciable fraction of planes. Yielding of an alloy in which short-range order exists or antiphase domain boundaries are present should be discontinuous because the first dislocations moving across the slip plane meet with the largest resistance.5 Such discontinuous yielding has been observed in CU3AU6,16 and Cuzn.l7 This phenomenon, however, can also be explained by mechanisms not involving order.b The published investigations of the effects of cold work on alloys with long-range or short-range order have not been covered thoroughly in reviews of order-disorder phenomena. These investigations, therefore, will be listed here. They have been concerned with strength properties> 2,3,6,8,9,12,16-21 electrical resistivity,2,4,18,19,21-26: thermoelectric power, magnetic properties,2,18,21,26 and X-ray strain'1,2,14,15,27,28 The slip systems and the appearance of the microstructure after deformation in ordered and disordered alloys have also been investigated. 6.10.ll,l7,23,29,30 The alloys used in these investigations were copper-gold. 1-4,6,9,10,14,16,18 23-26,28,29 copper-zinc. L7. 19. 20,30 nickel-manganese,2 11,21 iron-aluminum. iron-nickel,' copper palladium,4,18,22 gold-silver.4,18,22 and palladium-silver-copper.4 In the work reported here. the changes in properties of polycrystalline Cu3Au were investigated as functions of strain in wire drawing and rolling. Several new methods have been developed on the Iron Range to remove the material adhering to truck bodies in freezing weather. A machine known as a Gradall, incorporating the features of digging both above and below the horizontal, digging angle of blade control, full revolving, travel almost anywhere, and operated by one man, has proven successful in trials at body cleaning. Several of these units are in use with great saving in box-cleaning costs and improvements in efficiency of the truck operation with full capacity boxes. In addition to their winter use, the same machines have been used for ditching and excavating in the summer with great saving. The latest method of combating this freezing problem is to carry the exhaust from the engine through the body, making use of the tremendous heat that is now being wasted. To do this, the present wood sandwich which is used between the bottom of the box and the wear plate is removed and replaced with angles or channels run lengthwise of the box and spaced to permit gases to flow between or through them and also provide a good sup- port for the wear plate. The channels or angles are cut a little short on each end to form a cross passage that permits the gases to flow through the area. In the front end, openings are made in the wear plate and connect to a manifold created by welding a plate across the whole front of the box, spaced from the original end by the original vertical reinforcing angles at that point. The body being described is for a Euclid truck which is the only truck that has been adapted to this body-heating idea to date. At the rear of the truck, the holes from the cross passage are made in the bottom plate of the body and lead into a triangular-shaped body cross member under the scoop end of the truck.

SO much has been written about African, and particularly about Northern Rhodesian, copper during the past two years that I feel safe in assuming that you are familiar with the general background of the Rhodesian picture. Therefore, I will confine myself to certain of the high lights in connection with the history, geology, development, ore reserves, and contemplated mining methods in this relatively new and highly important copper field., Unlike most of the other great orebodies of the world, the Roan Antelope mine was not discovered by the hoof of a starving prospector's faithful burro; nor even, as its name might suggest, by a well-placed kick of protest from an antelope stumbling over a malachite outcrop. Late in 1905 an English prospector named Collier, traveling in the N'Dola district, came upon some natives using a green powder for medicinal purposes. Closer examination of the powder revealed that it ' was ground-up malachite. Collier endeavored to persuade the natives to tell him where they obtained this medicine, but' for a long time without success, because of the general feeling among the natives that they did not wish to reveal the resources of their land to the white. Finally however, - he persuaded- brie 'of-the elders to at" least take 'him part way toward, the- place where the malachite was supposed to occur. The bid took him, to a point on the lower regions of the Luanshya river and there left him with the instructions that if he followed the stream up toward its.
