THE tabular statement accompanying this note shows the money cost in each of the three departments of manufacture, of 17 leading items, and also the proportion (expressed in a decimal fraction) which each of these items bears to the total cost. The statement can hardly be taken for more than an average illustration of the clear showing of ratios and of results which may be made by such an arrangement, for not only will these items vary from month to month in any given works, but the methods themselves of manufacture differ widely in different works. It is obvious that such a statement, however useful it may be, must be submitted with but exceedingly little explanation or discussion, or with none at all, for the reason that to enter at any satisfac-

The sulfide capacities a1 1500°C of slags in the systern CaO + CaF, +Al2O3 have been measured by bringing samples into equilibrium with gas mixtures made from CO + CO2 + SO, + N2. The capacities are negligzble both JOY CaF, and CaF, + Al2O3 melts but when lime is present even at 20 wt pct capacilies as high as 30 x lom3 can be obtained. The results have yielded information concerning the liquidus at 1500°C and fluoride-oxide melts in general. The slags used in electroslag refining contain substantial amounts of calcium fluoride. Robinson and Grainger' report that good results can be obtained by using slags of the approximate composition 70 wt pct CaF2 + 30 pct Al2O3. It has also been reported2 that a mixture of 50 pct CaF2 + 30 pct A12O3 + 20 pct CaO makes a good slag for general use. In view of the fact that very low sulfur contents are claimed for ingots produced by the electroslag process. studies have been made of the sulfide capacities [c, = wt pct S (PO2/Ps2)1/2 at 1500°C. of slags consisting of pure calcium fluoride, and of its mixtures with lime and/or alumina. These studies have also provided information on the phase diagrams. The slags were brought into equilibrium with gas mixtures prepared from NZ + CO + CO2 + SO2. Because CaFz is volatile and also easily hydrolyzed. measurements were made of its loss in weight in various flowing gas mixtures. EXPERIMENTAL Procedure. The apparatus and procedure were the same as described previously. Both platinum and iridium crucibles were used (height and inner diameter about 1 cm), but those made from iridium were stronger and able to withstand a greater number of experiments. In each experiment two crucibles were set in an alumina support and 1 g of slag mixture was divided between them. The materials from each crucible were analyzed separately after being brought to equilibrium with the gas, and then quenched in the water-cooled end of the reaction tube. Materials. Alumina and lime were prepared as de-scribed previously.4 Calcium fluoride was obtained by igniting Analar calcium fluoride in a platinum boat at about 800°C in a stream of pure dry nitrogen: the product was cooled in a desiccator. The slags were produced from mixtures of the powdered constituents, these being melted together in the course of each equilibrium experiment. The sulfur analyses and the X-ray diffraction meas- urements on the solidified slags were made as described previously.4 From the latter it appears that the CaF2 contained less than 0.5 mol pct CaO. RESULTS Values of (ps2/po2) for the Gas Mixtures. The re-sults have been represented in terms of (ps, /Po,)"? for the various gas mixtures used. MODERN war means mechanization, and mechanization means raw materials, especially minerals-and lots of them. Let me recall a few events of recent history-events that constitute mile- stones down the road to the war now blazing on three continents and threatening to spread still farther. In 1932, Japan took Manchuria, largely upon the excuse that she needed raw materials; in 1935, Italy invaded Ethiopia, largely upon the excuse that Mussolini's growing nation needed raw materials-in this case oil; from 1933 to 1935, Germany cried out for a greater share of the world's natural wealth, and since 1938 has invaded or occupied ten other countries, frequently upon the excuse that she needed-and had a right to-more raw materials.

Isothermal temper-embrittlement studies were conducted on a 5140 steel at various temperatures for times as long as 3000 hr. Specimens from the embrittled steel were subjected to impact tests, metallographic examination, microhardness, and lattice-parameter measurements. SEVERAL of the steels in the low alloy group are subject to a pronounced decrease in impact energy if held within, or cooled slowly through, a range of temperatures below the lower critical. This phenomenon, known as temper embrittlement, is quite pronounced in the chromium steels of which AISI 5140 is typical. This study considered the response of one heat of 5140 steel when embrittled isothermally at various temperatures for times as long as 3000 hr. Excellent reviews of the work done in the field of temper embrittlement have been written by Hollomonl and Woodfine.' Both authors list the various theories which have been advanced to explain temper embrittlement. Some of the mechanisms considered were: 1—a transformation below 700°C; 2—an allotropic modification of iron; 3—precipitation from the ferrite of such compounds as carbides, nitrides, phosphides, or chromium oxides; 4—decomposition of retained austenite; 5—modification of special carbides; 6—grain-boundary segregation; and 7—selective distribution of carbides. The present study investigated the changes in hardness, Meyer's number, impact properties, micro-structure, and lattice parameter which occurred on embrittlement. Previous studies considered the influence of microstructure and of prior austenitic grain size3 on the response of 5140 steel to temper embrittlement. Equipment and Procedure All samples were taken from one heat of 5140 steel; the chemical composition of this steel was: 0.43 pct C, 0.86 pct Mn, 0.020 pct P, 0.019 pct S, 0.27 pct Si, 0.84 pct Cr, 0.10 pct Ni, 0.06 pct Mo, 0.10 pct Cu, and the remainder Fe. The material was received as % in. rounds. This stock was cut down to blanks measuring approximately 0.425~0.425~2.196 in. Heat Treatment: The rough blanks were normalized at 1600°F (870°C) for 1 hr, then austenitized at 1600°F (870°C) for 1 1/2 hr, and quenched into an agitated oil bath. The specimens were tempered at 1275°F (690°C) for 5 hr and water quenched. These tempered specimens were designated as the toughened state. Embrittling Treatments: The tempered bars were divided into sets and subjected to the various embrittling treatments listed in Table I. Temperatures from 750" to 1050°F were investigated for times of 1 to 3000 hr. Special tests to determine the effect of heating a short time at a higher temperature after long-time embrittlement at some lower temperature were also conducted. All specimens were water quenched at the end of the embrittling cycle, then ground and notched to obtain standard Charpy V-notch specimens. Impact Tests: The bars were fractured in a 260 ft-lb Charpy impact unit; specimens were fractured at temperatures ranging from —315°F to room temperature. Fixed temperatures used consisted of —315°F with liquid nitrogen, —115°F with dry ice and acetone, and 32°F with ice and water. Intermediate temperatures were obtained by suspending the bars in a jig over the liquid nitrogen, dry ice and acetone, or ice and water.

About six years ago the writer had occasion to visit a large magnetic iron-ore concentrating-plant, and then saw for the first time rubber belts employed for conveying-purposes. These belts were from 20 inches to 30 inches in width, and some of them were as long as 500 feet between centers. When I spoke of the enormous amount of material they handled with a small expenditure of power, the superintendent assented, but at the same time complained that although he bought the best quality of belts, the abrasion of the ore wore them out very rapidly, causing continually very large bills for repairs and renewals. On close examination several interesting points were discovered :

During the past year considerable work dealing with the mechanical properties and microstructure following the anneal under uniform condi-tions of certain types of commercial rolled brass has been done in this laboratory. Since these experiments were conducted with the active cooperation of the Bridgeport Brass Co., involving free use of its product, and have thus furnished information which is characteristic of some of its special mixtures, full publication of the numerical relationships and comparative results encountered does not seem justifiable. Some of the more general features of this work are, however, available and it is our present purpose to use the material in question, along with some results of special tests, in discussing the characteristics of recrystallization as related to the degree of hardening by strain and the ordinary annealing variables. We desire to make acknowledgment of the many courtesies extended by Mr. Charles Ferry, Metallurgist of the Bridgeport Brass Co., and the value of his cooperation, which has greatly stimulated the study of brass in this laboratory. A clear and systematic presentation of the principal relations between temperature and time of anneal, the changing physical properties and microstructure and the degree of previous reduction by cold-rolling, was first made, in the case of rolled brass and copper, by the French engineer, C. Grard,' in 1909, although much fragmentary information of this general character had appeared earlier and the main facts involved were undoubtedly known to many brass specialists through their own private research. A detailed study of a number of methods of relative permea-abilitv measurement has been made in a search for the tech-niqrle most suited to routine analysis of cores taken from reservoir rock. It has been found from tests run on the same samples of core material by a number of techniques that the Penn State, Hassler, Hafford, and dispersed feed techniques all yield results which are felt to be reliable. Conditions under which the faster single core dynamic technique may be used are described. Further work on the calculation of relative permeabilities to oil from data obtained by the gas drive method is needed before this latter rapid method can be utilized. Correlations between theoretical studies and experimental results have been obtained in studies of the boundary effect. pressure distribution in two-phase flow, and gas expansion effects. Previous conclusions that the effects of the outflow boundary could be made negligibly small have been substantiated. Results of experimentally determined oil and gas pressure distributions along a core sample during flow are presented. Further studies of the effects of rate of flow in the measurement of relative permeability-saturation relations have shown that results are independent of the rate of flow as long as the flow rate is below the point where inertial effects commence. An analysis of the effects of a severalfold expansion of gas along the flow path indicates that while saturation gradients are induced in the test sample, the errors caused by this phenomenon in relative permeability measurements are small. INTRODUCTION Many pages of literature have been devoted to pointing out the need for relative permeability-saturation relations in reservoir engineering. One of the most attractive ways of obtaining this information is by the analysis of samples of core material taken from the formation in question, and again literature has described man); methods for obtaining these data. It is the purpose of this paper to present the work that has been done in the study of some of these published methods together with some other methods that have been recently developed in this laboratory. Also, a study of some of the factors that influence the laburatory determination of relative permeability-saturation relations is presented. FACTORS WHICH AFFECT LABORATORY STUDY OF FLUID FLOW THROUGH RESERVOIR ROCK To determine relative permeability-saturation relations of samples of reservoir rock in the laboratory, it is important to know what factors affect these measurements in order that the magnitude of these effects can be ascertained and steps then can be taken to eliminate or, in some cases, to minimize them. The factors that have been investigated are the boundary effect, the effect of gas expansion. and the rate effect. Boundary Effect In laboratory experiments in which two immiscible fluids are flowed through a porous medium, there exists a discontinuity of capillary properties at the outflow face. This discontinuity exists became the fluids pass from a region of finite capillary pressure in the sample to a region of zero capillary pressure in an open receiving vessel. THE Pennsylvania Legislature, on March 13, 1837, passed an act authorizing the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Co. to construct a railway to connect the North Branch Division of the Pennsylvania Canal with the slack water navigation f the Lehigh River; the navigation company accepted this act on May 10, 1837. Edwin A. Douglas, chief engineer for the navigation company, located the route for this railway from White Haven to Wilkes-Barre, which was called the Lehigh & Susquehanna Railroad. The object was to transport coal from the Wyoming Valley, of Pennsylvania, to the Atlantic seaboard. This railway was considered a marvelous piece of engineering, as it included a tunnel nearly 13 mi. long, and a series of inclines, or planes, up which the cars laden with coal were raised from the vicinity of Ashley to the summit f the mountain near Solomon's Gap, whence they were taken to White Haven by rail. There the coal was transferred to canal boats. In June, 1862, floods almost completely destroyed the upper division of the canal, so on March 4, 1863, the Pennsylvania Legislature passed an act prohibiting its restoration, but granted a charter for the construction of a railway from White Haven to Mauch Chunk to connect with the line from White Haven to Wilkes-Barre, previously built. On March 16, 1864, a supplementary act was passed extending the Lehigh & Susquehanna Railroad to Easton, Pa. This completed a direct all-rail route from Wilkes-Barre to the New York harbor (by way of the Central Railroad of New Jersey). Up to this time, all freight and passenger traffic passed over the planes, but in 1866 and 1867 there was constructed what was known as the "back track" down the mountain side between Solomon's Gap and Ashley over which all the passenger traffic and empty cars thereafter passed; it is now known as part of the main line. For the handling of the heavy coal traffic, however, this would have involved a continuous climb from Ashley, 170.27 mi., from New York, to Solomon's Gap, 157.8 mi. from New York, or a distance of 12.47 mi., and a total ascent of 1,013.75

The phase structure and aging characteristics of two nickel-base alloys, Inconel 718 and 702, were investigated. Wrought and cast Inconel 718 showed ArisCb as the major hardening phase, as well as ture was positively identified. Inconel 702 had Ni3Al as the major hardening phase, as well as Cr7C3-of the phase amounts with temperature was determined. 1 HE value of phase structure and aging rate information in the utilization of alloys has been well established. As part of a continuing program, the results obtained on two nickel-base alloys, hconel 718 and Inconel 702, are presented here. Inconel 718 is a relatively new alloy considered for application in both sheet and cast form. Its novelty lies in the use of high columbium tantalum levels in a Ni-Cr-Fe base. No previous work on this type of alloy has been reported in the literature. Inconel 702 is being used now as an oxidation-resistant sheet alloy. Occasional fabrication problems spurred work on its basic structural behavior. The composition of 702 is essentially nichrome plus aluminum and titanium for strengthening and added oxidation resistance. This puts it in the basic class of other nickel-base alloys which have already been studied. The two alloys will be treated separately. INCONEL 718 Phase Study Methods. The phases present after the various conditions investigated were determined by X-ray diffraction analysis of two different elec-trolytically extracted residues and microscopic examination. The extraction methods, using 10 pct HC1 in alcohol and 10 pct H3PO, in water and the X-ray technique have been described previously.' The effect of temperature on the phase behavior was studied on sheet material using the following heat treatments: 2250°F, 2 hr, ice brine quench 1300 100 hr, water quench 2250°F, 2 hr, ice brine quench 1400°, 100 hr, water quench 2250°F, 2 hr, ice brine quench 1500°F, 100 hr, water quench 2250o 2 hr, ice brine quench 1700°F, 48 hr, water quench 2250°F, 2 hr, ice brine quench 1850°, 24 hr, water quench 2250°, 2 hr, ice brine quench 2000°F, 6 hr, water quench The high solution temperature was an attempt to dissolve as many phases as possible without causing melting. Aging exposures were made longer than normal heat treating times in order to approach equilibrium conditions more closely. Cast material was examined only in the as-cast condition and with the normal heat treatment (1700°F, 1 hr, air cool 1325oF, 16 hr,air cool). Materials. The full phase study was performed on sheet specimens approximately 1/2 in. by 2 in. by 1/16 in. The cast pieces were cut from the gating system of a vacuum-cast test piece. An all weld-metal specimen was made by running many weld beads on the sheet using filler made from the sheared edges of the sheet. All external contamination was removed by belt-sanding followed by an electro-polishing treatment. The typical composition of wrought Inco 718 is as follows: The alloy is air-melted. Cast hco 718 may have higher molybdenum. Due to the expectation of finding a Ni-Cb phase (Ni, Cb) for which no X-ray diffraction pattern was available in the ASTM Index, a special 5 Ib heat to the stoichiometric composition of this intermetallic

Since the first pay hole in Missouri's "New Lead Belt" was drilled in 1955, this district has become one of the world's leading sources of lead. The belt extends from north of Viburnum in a southerly direction to near Eminence, a distance of about 35 miles. The St. Joseph Lead Company was the discoverer and first to develop new mines in the Viburnum area. Since the discovery of the New Lead Belt, many companies have engaged in exploration programs and several major companies have become active in development of new mines. These include Cominco American, Inc., which operates a joint venture with Dresser Industries; Ozark Lead Company, a subsidiary of Kennecott Copper Company; and Missouri Lead Operating Company, a joint venture of Arnax and Homestake. St. Joseph Lead Company, with over 100 years of experience in the Old Lead Belt, has served as a leader in development of equipment and mining techniques, making its properties some of the most efficient mining operations in the world. The new producers give the district the benefit of fresh viewpoints, as their engineers are mostly from outside of Missouri and their previous experience has been considerably different from conventional lead belt practices. While all operations are similar in that they are room-and-pillar, the diverse experience of the operators has produced a group of mines that employ a variety of equipment and mining techniques to give increased efficiency

Two distinct types of defects occur at times in copper wire as a result of the use of dies of improper design or undesirable wire-drawing practice. The conditions under which these defects may be produced, as well as precautions to be taken in order to prevent them, have been known to The American Brass Co. for many years. The quality of the copper wire bars and rods has too often and unjustly been held responsible for these particular defects and it is to correct any such belief that this paper is presented. An extremely high quality of electrolytic copper has been supplied to the trade by all refineries for the last 20 years at least. The purity of the copper would average well above 99.900 per cent. The casting of the wire bars has been handled in a generally satisfactory manner. The bars have been cast sound, with a flat to slightly crowning set and have been free from sloppy edges, cold sets, etc. In other words, the wire bars have met A. S. T. M. specifications and have been generally satisfactory. For the most part, they have been everything that could be desired from a quality standpoint yet most of the wire mills in this country and in Europe have at times held the quality of the copper responsible for the two types of defects described in this paper. As a matter of fact, these defects are produced entirely in the wire mills. The author has visited many of the large wire mills in the United States and in Europe to investigate these defects. In some cases the trouble has been so serious that the wire mill has ceased operations. At times the wire mills are reluctant to believe that they are responsible for the defective product. The effect of die design, wire-drawing practice, etc., upon the quality of copper wire has received' little study on the part of wire mills, particularly those that have commenced operations in the last few years.
