IN many countries the lack of liquid petroleum supplies has centered interest upon the hydrogenation of coal and coal tars for the preparation of motor fuel. In the United States, hydrogenation has been of greater interest for grading up low-value petroleum fractions to the more valuable volatile fuels and for the preparation of a variety of premium products, including aviation gasolines, solvents, Diesel fuels, and lubricating oils. Chemically, the basic reason for this process is that, as shown in Table 1, the ratio of hydrogen to carbon (H/C ratio) in available raw materials is quite different from that characterizing the products sought.

HAYWARD.-I do not want it understood that I think that the conclusion that the time of tempering temperature is immaterial has been definitely proven, but since these are the first definite figures put out, I thought before continuing on more work ourselves, it would be well to present them as progress and for information. J. A. MATHEWS, Syracuse, N. Y.-I think that if Prof. Hayward would consult the paper of Profs. Barus and Strouhal,1 1885, he would find about 250 pages, mostly figures, on this subject, in which they investigated the tempering effect by electrical and magnetic methods. There are so many figures in the paper that it is very difficult reading. One point particularly brought out was that even at a low temperature, such as the boiling point of alcohol, about 60° C., there is a tempering effect, increasing up to 4 hr. One reason they obtained those results, with which the present authors are at variance, was that they started with a high-carbon steel which hardens thoroughly, whereas the steel Prof. Hayward and his collaborator used was a comparatively mild steel which does not take a great deal of hardening. About 3 years ago Mr. Stagg and I published 2 a few figures bearing on the same subject, but we used .a low-carbon alloy steel of high tempering qualities and found a great deal of improvement, particularly in ductility, by continuing the drawing up to 4 hr. We used a chrome-vanadium steel showing after heat treatment 250,000 tensile strength. On short drawing, we got almost no ductility, but by continuing to 4 hr., we raised it to 12 per cent. I believe Prof. Hayward's results are due to using comparatively mild steel, whereas Prof. Barus used drill rod and carried out a, wonderfully exhaustive

The Fifth Annual National Exposition of Chemical Industries will be held in Chicago at the Coliseum and First Regiment Armory during the week of Sept. 22. It was decided to hold the exposition in Chicago, this year, for two reasons: The U. S. Army commandeered the Grand Central Palace Exposition Building in New York, immediately on the close of the last exposition and converted it into a receiving hospital, the use for which is now, happily, nearly ceased; and it was thought that the Exposition would succeed in bringing about a greater development of chemical industries in the Chicago district and the adjoining states. The Mining Engineering Society of the State College of Washington, Pullman, Wash., has elected the following officers for this semester: F. MASON, President, WILLIAM WHITE, Vice-President,. L. E. TRAEGER, Secretary and Treasurer. The Society holds meetings every two weeks at which papers on mining and metallurgical topics are presented by students and members, of the faculty. At the meeting of Oct. 25, Prof. H. R. Robbins gave an interesting talk upon the Rankin Process for the treatment of base-metal ores. In this process the metals are extracted by the use of nitric acid, the acid -being recovered almost entirely. Prof. Robbins thinks the process has great possibilities, but it has not yet been worked on a commercial scale. The Missouri Mining Association, the student organization at the Missouri School of Mines, Rolla, Mo., has. elected the following officers for the ensuing year: L. W. EHLERS, President, H. A. A study has been made of the effect of undercooling on the grain structure and solute distribution in small ingots of pure bismuth and of a 100 ppm Ag in bismuth alloy. Autoradiographic evidence shows that in undercooled melts a network of dendrites is formed throughout the melt immediately after nu-cleation. At large undercoolings the dendrites are very thin and closely spaced. The origin of the observed grain morphology can be explained on the basis of information about the mode of solidification revealed by the impurity substructure. WHILE a great number of studies of nucleation in undercooled molten metals have been made, comparatively little attention has been given to the mode of solidification from melts with large undercool- ings. Colligan and Bayles1 and Walker2 have measured the rate of advance of the solid-liquid interface in undercooled nickel melts, but the morphology of the solidifying material remained a matter of speculation. Fehling and Scheil3 have described the grain structure in ingots formed from undercooled melts of nickel, palladium, and copper, and a series of Ni-Cu and Ni-Pd alloys. At small undercoolings, equiaxed structures are observed, the grain diameter tending to increase as the temperature of nucleation is lowered. At greater undercoolings, a columnar structure is developed, while with still further undercooling there is a smaller grain size incorporating rather coarse subgrains. All-bright and Colligan4 examined the grain structure shown by ingots solidified from melts of nickel and of Ni-Ag alloy at an undercooling of 105°C, and concluded that considerable grain growth had taken place after solidification. The object of the present work is to correlate the mode of solidification from undercooled melts with both the grain structure and impurity segregation, using tracers to examine the latter.

DAME Nature was in a generous mood when she distributed widely over the face of the globe numerous deposits of phosphate rock from which man can make phosphatic festiIizer to replace the phosphate re- moved from the soil by crops. The principal deposits are readily accessible to the world's greatest consuming areas and most of them are such that mining operations can be carried on at relatively low cost. The world's known reserves shown in Table 1 are sufficient to last well over 2000 gears at the present rate of consumption. Before giving a brief outline of the phosphate rock industry of foreign countries let us try to get a picture of the movement of phosphate rock throughout the world in 1938, the last full normal calendar year where it came from and where it was consumed. Table 2 shows the origin and finial destination of world shipments in 1938 by grand divisions. Table 3 (p. 499) shows shipment9 of phosphte rock to each country in Europe. Europe is seen to be by far the world's greatest market and the French North African mines the world's most important producers outside of the U. S. A.

. F. W. SPERR, JR.,* Pittsburgh, Pa.--Mr. Malcolmson states that the Carbocoal process produces ammonium sulfate in excess of that normally recovered in the ordinary byproduct coke process. Table 3 indicates that 20,000 to 25,000 lb. of sulfate of ammonia are obtained in carbonizing 1000 tons of Clinchfield coal. This is a high-grade coal and yields from 26 to 28 lb. of ammonium sulfate per ton in a modern byproduct coke oven. On the next page, 21 lb. is stated as the yield of ammonium sulfate per short ton of raw coal; this is less than the average production from any well operated byproduct coke-oven plant treating coal of the character usually coked, in Pennsylvania and Ohio. The statement as to the comparative yields of light oil is somewhat misleading in view of the results obtained during the past year or two by the more modern byproduct coke plants. The plants put in operation by the H. Koppers Co., during the past two years, are producing about 3.5 gal. of light oil per short ton of coal, and several of these plants are producing more than 4 gal. per ton. The yield of pure toluene runs from 0.45 gal. to 0.55 gal. per ton. .The quality of the light oil .obtained from the Carbocoal process is of much greater importance than would be inferred by one not closely familiar with the subject. The presence of paraffins in the benzol and toluol fractions seriously detracts from their commercial value; the benzol and toluol fractions derived fro in the Carbocoal process contain about 50 per cent, of paraffins. It should be thoroughly understood what these paraffins are. They are simply hydrocarbons that go to make up ordinary petroleum, and if a successful method for the removal of paraffins from benzol and toluol has been developed, this can at once be applied to several well known processes by which benzol and toluol can be made directly from petroleum, which have as yet been total failures on account of the contamination of these products by paraffins.

The application of the law of supply and demand to the sale of crude oil is generally conceded, but the motives underlying the buyer's (refiner's) demands are not always obvious to the seller (producer). In some cases this obscurity has led to the conclusion that the refiner may be unnecessarily particular when he selects one crude and rejects another. This preference, however, is very largely the reflection of the refiner's product demands and the quality of the stocks obtainable from the selected crude. The purpose of this paper is to point out critical characteristies of the major classes of refined products and to show how crudes vary in their suitability for such products. With relatively few exceptions, available processing methods and addition agents make it theoretically possible to produce any type of refined product from any crude source, although it may not be economically sound to do so. The widespread application of thermal cracking for converting higher boiling stocks into gasoline is well known. More recently cracking and refining in the presence of catalysts9 have been developed, as well as various processes for polymerizing lighter hydrocarbons into gasolines having desirable characteristics.6 For several years, selective solvents have been applied commercially to refining inferior quality kerosene, Diesel fuel and lubricating oil distillates.3 Improved methods for refining lubricating oils from crude residual4 formerly suitable only for fuel, are now in use and a number of special solvent processes are available for dewaxing lubricating oils to low pour point.5 These improved refining methods have been developed not only to meet the demand for improved product quality but also to enable the refiner to obtain quality products from crude sources that would not yield such products by the older refining methods. In many cases, the utilization of these modern refining tools necessitates an appreciable expenditure for equipment as well as added manufacturing costs, and their application therefore must be justified economically. Despite the availability of such tools, the added processing costs involved and yields obtainable may render their application entirely impractical. I. INTRODUCTION THE smelting plant of the British Columbia Copper Co. at Greenwood, B. C., now closed because of the decline in the price of copper due to the European war, is of special interest to metallurgists for several reasons. It was successfully smelting in blast furnaces the lowest grade copper ore of all plants in America. In order to do so, it had to run at' very high efficiency, which necessarily required a large tonnage per square foot of hearth area, together with the minimum amount of labor and other costs. The furnaces smelted daily 2,250 tons of ore (6.62 tons per sq. ft. of hearth area), carrying 0.85 per cent. of copper, at a smelting cost of $1.18 per ton. The entire plant required 130 men to operate it and keep up repairs, showing a labor efficiency of about 17.5 tons per man per day. In the present paper, the method of obtaining these results is shown. Most of the information contained in this description I obtained as Assistant Superintendent, during the two years preceding the present shutdown. THE name fuller's earth, which was derived from its early use in "fulling" or removing grease from woolen goods, is a term that is generally considered to designate mineral matter, containing hydrous aluminum silicates of the clay group, which has a high capacity for removing colors from oils, whether of animal, vegetable, or mineral origin. Fuller's earths are usually dried and may be "tempered" by heating or may be treated with water or reagents to improve their efficiency. For our purpose the term "acid-treated earths" will include those products from the partial decomposition of mineral water -by acid which are equal to or more efficient than an untreated fuller's earth from Quincy, Fla., when used in bleaching mineral oil by the "contact" process. In general, the contact process for treating oils consists of heating and agitating a mixture of oil and finely divided adsorbent, the latter being subsequently removed by filtration. The term "adsorbent" is used because, although there has been a great deal of controversy over the mechanism of removal of impurities from oils by mineral matter, there is no doubt that adsorption, which involves the surface of the solid, plays a major part.1 The properties that make fuller's earth useful in the treatment of petroleum products by "percolation" and in the purification of edible oils by the contact process have long been studied, but the comparatively recent adaptation of the contact process to the bleaching of petroleum products has made desirable the further investigation of fuller's earth and other, adsorbent earths.

T HE Mysore iron works, at Bhadravati, about 2000 ft. above sea level in the Shimoga district of Mysore, British India, is served by a meter gage branch line of the Mysore State Railways. The works which were designed and erected by Perin & Marshall, who still act as consulting engineers, are surrounded by a thickly wooded country which sup- plies about 400 tons per day of wood for fuel. The ore deposits lie 20 miles to the south, and limestone quarries are close by the works. The Bhadra river sup- plies the works and the town with the necessary quantity of water. U.S. Steel Uncovers Massive Iron Ore Deposits in Nevada United States Steel Corporation has confirmed that mineral investigation in Lyon County, Nevada. has been under way since 1960. Confirmation followed press reports of a statement attributed to a Nevada State inspector of mines to the effect that the Corporation has found a major iron ore deposit that may also contain copper ill West Central Nevada. Drillings over the years in a number of locations have indicated extensive iron ore bodie containing a possible quarter of a billion tons of ore of a basically magnetite composition. analyzing less than 40% iron, which would require beneficiation for commercial use. Some of these deposits are deep- lying while others would permit open pit mining. These bodies contain copper in quantities of approxiimately 0.3%. More recent drilling in another area has disclosed evidence of additional deeply-lying deposits of a lower fe content but with more promising indications of copper. A realistic estimate of fe and cu ore reserves cannot be made until more drilling is completed.

This was one of the inadvertences of war. Mr. De Wolf has been Director, or Chief, of the State Geological Survey for approximately ten years. Through the courtesy of the Governor of Illinois, lie was loaned to the Bureau of Mines for about seven months, after which period he resumed his former position.

Discovery of a hitherto unsuspected extension of the Vermilion range iron formation in Northern St. Louis County, Minn., has been announced by the director of the State's geological survey, Dr. George M. Schwartz. USGS aeromagnetic maps show that the Vermilion range curves southeast from the Tower-Soudan area into the wilderness between Embarrass and Bear Head Lake. Dr. Schwartz believes that this new information justifies considerable exploration and drilling for iron ore in an area of about 20 sq miles southeast of Soudan. The aerial maps were a result of a three year USGS-Minnesota Geological Survey aerial search for iron formations in a 30,000 sq mile area in northern Minnesota.

PROJECT 8411 of the U. S. Bureau of Standards, sponsored by the Iron and Steel Division of the A.I.M.E., is an attempt to define more concisely than has been possible heretofore the accuracy and the Limits ' of usefulness of the ' various methods now in use for the determination of oxygen as it exists in ferrous materials. It originated in correspondence between John Johnston and other metallurgists, and was brought to the attention of the Iron and Steel Division of the Institute at the Annual Meeting in February, 1933. As reported in MINING AND MET,ALLURGY, Vol. 14, page 152, March, 1933, "Dr. Johnston introduced, and those present adopted, a resolution that the Iron and Steel Division of the A.I.M.E., believing that a careful comparison of the several methods now in use for the analysis of steel for nonmetallic elements such as oxygen is highly desirable, heartily endorses the proposal that the U. S. Bureau of Standards act as a clearing house " in this matter, undertaking the final preparation and allocation of identical samples to those laboratories willing to collaborate in this important question, and collate the results re- ported back to the Bureau.'"

IN a laboratory devoted to the furtherance of the science of communication, the breadth and variety of the problems encountered are challenging to a metallurgist. In my own long association with the Bell Telephone Laboratories, our metallurgical group has dealt with a vast number of alloys, both ferrous and nonferrous, and with many materials in the border range of metallic properties., The objectives of our design engineers embrace every phase of telephony, and the properties they desire in metals are generally unusual, frequently unique, and often conflicting. Commercial alloys have not always been available with properties to meet a special requirement in the telephone plant, and many alloys have had, therefore, to be custom-made. Anyone who has had the opportunity to observe the results of tests of all types on numerous such alloys, both commercially and specially produced, or who has taken part in the development of an alloy of some necessary, but new or unusual combination of properties, could not fail to be impressed by the frequency with which a desired goal has been reached or adequately approached through the presence of decimal quantities of alloying elements. Nor could One fail to be struck by the occasions when, conversely, of a minute amount Of impurity element has rendered an alloy useful. It is no exaggeration to state that the content be- hind the decimal point often spells success or fail-ure, and the critical content is sometimes far to the right of the decimal point as I shall later illustrate. The great effects of small additions have long been recognized and have, in fact, been described by many investigators. The importance of the minute, however, cannot be overemphasized. Therefore, in this discussion, I propose to illustrate for you some of the startling instances, drawn primarily from our own experiences, wherein small, even vanishingly small, proportions of stranger elements in otherwise common aggregates have com-pletely changed the customary pattern of behavior. No one property has a monopoly as to being dis-proportionately affected by minor elements. Nearly all properties are affected, but there is time here to include only a selected few. I have chosen, there-fore, three of general interest: strength, magnetic, and electrical properties. I shall inquire into both the mechanisms and consequences of these disproportionate effects and try to share with you the fascination and challenge of this field. Strength Properties of Lead and Lead Alloys To illustrate the effect of the minute on strength properties I have selected lead and its alloys, with which we have worked extensively for many years. Lead has the advantages of being available in quantity in a state of high purity and of being fairly easy to melt and fabricate without contamination to any extent detectable by the spectrograph. The experimenlal YeSnllS were compaved with the results of an elastic-plastic wodel that relates the size of the pluslic .zone to the cvack length, internal pressure, and yield stress. it was found that the clzunges in the dislocctlion cryrays with lemperature and combosition can be e-kplaincd by the lemperatrnre and composilion dependence of the yield stress. An wmtsual feature of this study was the observation of low -temperature noncrystrrllogruphic cracks. PLASTIC relaxation can occur at the edge of a moving crack by the operation of pre-existing dislocation sources or by the creation of new sources in a region of perfect 1attice.l'2 The amount of relaxation in a given crystal depends on the crack velocity and the temperature, and can determine whether a crack propagates in a brittle or a ductile manner.1-3 Tetelman and Robertson4 observed microcracks m Fe-3 pct Si single crystals that formed on (100) planes by the precipitation of hydrogen gas during electrolytic charging at 23°C. The plastic deformation accompanying crack propagation was observed in the form of dislocation etch pits and an extensive analysis has been made of the size, shape, and crystallography of the dislocation arrays5-7 This paper describes the effect of temperature on the plastic deformation generated around hydrogen-induced cracks in Fe-3.1 pct Si and Fe-4.2 pct Si single crystals. The observations are compared with the results of an elastic-plastic model for yielding around a crack containing an internal pressure. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The composition of the materials used in this study are given in Table I. Single crystals of alloy A and the 4.2 pct Si alloy were grown by the strain-anneal method; crystals of alloy B and the 5.1 pct Si alloy were cut from an ingot grown from the liquid. he ~ingle-cr~stal metallographic specimens had a Cross section of 0.100 by 0.050 in. with a length of at least 3/8 in. PRODUCTION COSTS, profits, and quality are the primary factors in the peacetime production of iron and steel. In a war emergency, as high production rates and as complete utilization of readily available raw materials as possible, consistent with securing passable quality, become the most important factors. In this connection a discussion of some of the recent developments in the German iron and steel industry, where the problem of scarcity has naturally always been more acute than in the U.S.A., maybe of interest. To get more pig iron out of the existing blast furnaces it was necessary to obtain the maximum efficiency from the iron-bearing raw materials. This was achieved by eliminating all "excess baggage," chiefly by beneficiating the ore. The preparatory work for this was done by various methods which are effective when the ore either is too poor or contains too many impurities or too much gangue. Some of the beneficiation methods are well known, some are combinations of wet-mechanical, magnetic, roasting, sintering, and other treatments.

In Cleveland County, North Carolina, 1 ½ miles south of Kings Mountain, Foote Mineral Co. operates an open pit for the production of spodumene, feldspar, mica and commercial stone. Spodumene concentrate is sent to Foote Mineral's Sunbright, Va., plant and to other customers. Exton, Pa. and New Johnsonville, Tenn., plants produce lithium com- pounds sold to the oil industry for multipurpose lithium-base greases, to the metal industry as welding flux, to the air conditioning market and to the glass industry. Ceramic-grade spodumene, feldspar, and mica concentrates go to other processing companies from the Kings Mountain plant. Waste amphibolite is delivered to a neighboring quarry operation. Geology and exploration of the deposit have been described by T. L. Kesler, Chief Geologist of Foote Mineral Co., in the September 1961 MINING ENGINEERING. Measured ore reserves as published at that time were 20.7 million tons. The ore deposit consists of a series of lithium-bearing pegmatites enclosed in amphibolite and mica schist wall rocks. The general strike of the pegmatites is northerly, and in the southern part of the pit, they dip slightly towards the west. The largest body being mined has a fairly uniform thickness of about 200 ft. Other pegmatites in the pit area range from 20 to 100 ft in thickness. Minerals in the pegmatites are 20% spodumene, 32% quartz, 6% muscovite, 41 % feldspar and 1 % trace minerals.
