Variogram analysis and kriging lack robustness in the presence of outliers and data with long-tailed distributions, which often arises when estimating grades in precious metal deposits. The capping technique, consisting of truncating the data to some top-cut grade, is widely used in order to mitigate the influence of the values in the upper tail of the distribution. However, this procedure omits part of the grade variability and is likely to provoke a bias in the estimates. To avoid these issues, a recently proposed approach is to decompose the grade of interest into three components (the truncated grade, a weighted indicator above the top-cut grade, and a zero-mean residual) and jointly estimate the truncated grade and the indicator by cokriging. This approach is attractive as it provides unbiased grade estimates, allows choosing the ?optimal? top-cut value, and essentially works with truncated and indicator data, thus avoiding the use of outlying values for calculating sample variograms and performing spatial interpolation. This work presents an application of this approach to a disseminated gold deposit that has been identified through exploration drilling. The effect of using an indicator covariate is assessed through leave-one-out cross-validation, by comparing the grade estimates with the true grades and with the grade estimates obtained with the conventional capping approach, which considers only the truncated grade as the variable of interest. As a result, cokriging the truncated grade and the indicator above top-cut grade outperforms the conventional capping approach, yielding significantly more accurate estimates. A few complementary guidelines are provided for validating the model hypotheses and for the implementation of cokriging.

Mine planners are under pressure to evaluate the impact of changing economic times and newly acquired data on their mine plans. Incorporating changes such as commodity prices, customer sales, fluctuating cost assumptions and newly acquired geologic data requires quick turnaround for model building and planning to keep mine plans on pace with changes as they occur. Because of the length of time required to perform some of the geologic modeling and mine planning tasks, planning frequency may not be keeping pace with the frequency of change. To meet these challenges, one leading North American mining company successfully increased the frequency rate and accuracy of its mine plans to stay current with incoming data, ensuring its mine plans reflect the latest information, thereby minimizing or eliminating production cost variance.

PYROPHYLLITE, first identified as soapstone,1 later as agalmatolite,2 and finally as pyrophyllite,3 has been known to occur in North Carolina for more than 130 years and has been produced intermittently in commercial amounts for the past 100 years. Pyrophyllite mining, however, has become a major industry in North Carolina only during the past 25 years. North Carolina and California are the chief producing states. Current annual production averages 125,000 tons, of which slightly more than 90 pct comes from North Carolina. Distribution and Geologic Setting: All known pyrophyllite deposits in North Carolina are associated with rocks of the Carolina Slate Belt,4 which is composed of a vast series of metamorphosed volcanic and sedimentary materials, occurring as two zones extending in a northeast-southwest direction across the state. The larger of these zones, lying in the central Piedmont region, varies from 8 to 50 miles wide. The smaller zone lies along the eastern edge of the Piedmont region and is partly covered by coastal plain sediments.

Technical disputes, commercial negotiations and workplace/societal conflict are a natural part of doing business and just living itself. Conflict is everywhere û at home (between family and neighbours); in the workplace (between management, co-workers and unions), with contractors and with other companies; and everywhere at the community level, dealing with land access (pastoralists/farmers and indigenous/First Nation people), environmental protestors and NIMBY-ites - Civil Society in general. Exploration and mining companies, operating in more remote, less developed and culturally diverse regions, tend to encounter myriad areas of conflict (typically emotion-charged) and they are outlined. Dispute prevention, management and various binding and non-binding resolution techniques are discussed. The paper gives a general overview of the ADR nomenclature and framework (mediation, conciliation, expert determination, adjudication, arbitration and litigation) encouraging technical professionals to participate. Its thesis is that lawyers should not necessarily be the first port of call when problems arise between the mining workforce, contractors, joint venture partners, purchasers of prospects/mines, traditional land owners, protest groups, etc. If the matter must be litigated, the role of the expert witness is critical in pretrial planning, negotiations, mediation and litigation management, so a few guidelines are provided. Whilst dispute resolution has a legal context, the paper is written from an AusIMM technical professionalÆs perspective, emphasising practical long-lasting pragmatic solutions.

Thirty mines and prospects were studied; 22 are within the Dolus Lakes RARE II area. Three properties within the area and one adjacent to it were determined to have indicated or inferred gold, silver, or molybdenum resources (fig. 1 and table 1) associated with quartz veins and shear zones or quartz-pyrite stockworks in granodiorite. Five other properties in the area and three just outside have potential for the discovery of gold and silver resources. Minor amounts of very fine-grained placer gold are in glacial outwash in and near the area. The John G. Carlisle Mine (fig. 1, no. 9) produced 120 oz (3.7 kg) of gold between 1897-1899. The Independence Mine produced 481 oz (15 kg) gold, 197 oz (6.1 kg) silver, and 189 lb (86 kg) of copper between 1926 and 1935. These mines are adjacent to the study area's northern boundary.

The International Symposium-cum-Workshop on Management andControl of High Gas Emissions and Outbursts in Underground CoalMines was held in Wollongong in March 1995. Coverage of high gasemissions was virtually confined to instantaneous outburst implications, essentially seam gas pre-drainage. Globally, instantaneous outbursts have been known for 150 years, andthe first Australian outburst occurred in 1895 and Australian occurrences and mines affected have increased since. Few significant coal producing countries are unaffected. The coals affected range in rank from lignites to anthracites. Geological disturbances are the most likely environments for occurrences. The most likely mining geometry is of virgin headings, with some occurrences on longwalls and in other situations. Widespread research into many aspects of the problem has yet to produce a generally accepted explanation. Explosive inducement is a well-known control. Apparently high advance rates increase face gassiness and create higher stress abutments, increasing proneness. The most popular preventive measure, pre-drainage of virgin coal ahead of faces has produced highly successful very long hole drilling performances but without the precision necessary for accurate geometric hole patterns, despite quite sophisticated drilling equipment and hole surveying instruments. For the future, more precise degasification is sought, even from the surface, together with rapid face coal gassiness assessments to confirm lowering below threshold values, as well as other proneness lowering measures, perhaps related to new heading and longwall geometries and to new equipment to provide them. But above all, safe management plans are required for each operation, to safeguard the miners and their working environments, and thus to protect underground coal mining from this mounting threatening problem.

Using non-hazardous industrial residues in mine waste remediation is beneficial not only for the mining industry where substantial amounts of the waste generated have potential to produce acid rock drainage and pollute the environment, but also the providing industry, minimizing the waste landfilled. In this study green liquor dregs (GLD), residue from 15 different paper mills were characterized to valorize it as a potential product as a cover material. In another part of the study, one of the GLDs and a local till were characterized to determine the optimal mixture of GLD amended till to be used in a field application at the closed Näsliden Mine in northern Sweden. The study concluded 10% GLD-amended till to be the optimal recipe and was successfully applied at the Näsliden mine waste dump. However, the great variability in the characteristics of GLD creates challenges if it is to be valorized as a product.

Major mining projects are developed with the assistance of lending institutions who provide hundreds of millions of dollars in funding over several years, and of course expect those funds to be returned with interest. Two Australian banks have adopted the Equator Principles, an emerging financial industry benchmark for assessing and managing environmental and social risk in project financing. Project financiers have encountered environmental and social issues that are both complex and challenging, particularly with respect to projects in the emerging markets of Asia-Pacific and elsewhere. There are many recent and historical examples of failures by resource companies to effectively manage their environmental, social, safety and security risks, some of which have caused the project to fail completely, and some of which have caused the temporary cessation of production. These events put the financial institutions' funds at risk through inadequate management capacity and non-compliance adversely affecting the ability of the borrowers to repay the loans. They can also reflect adversely on the reputation of the lending institutions. In assessing these risks, lenders are increasingly looking at the track record of the borrower in its country of origin and in other countries where it operates. Lenders are wary of companies that have one standard for operations in a developed country, where the regulatory environment may tightly control what they do, and another standard for operations in countries where the regulatory regime is perhaps less stringent. Lenders may require environmental and social reviews or audits to be conducted on their behalf by competent third parties prior to a loan being approved, and annually over the life of the relationship. The mining industry's concept of the unwritten `social licence to operate' is highly relevant in relation to the delivery of community benefits that are sustainable post-mine closure. This paper provides examples of recent practices that support financial viability and sustainable development, as well as examples of some failures that have put lenders at risk.

Only recently has the term Induced Polarization found its way into geophysical literature. Schlumberger first mentioned the possible use of the induced polarization effect in one of his early papers. Later, induced polarization was the subject of several university theses, such as Seigel's at the University of Toronto and Bliel's at the Michigan School of Technology. In addition, a group at the New Mexico School of Mining and Technobgy has done work on induced polarization. There is very little to be found in print on the subject of induced polarization. Several papers have been presented at meetings, the 1958 AIME and SEG* conventions, for instance, on laboratory measurements of the effect and theoretical considerations useful in the interpretation of field results. This paper is the first attempt to present actual field results which show the usefulness of induced polarization as a prospecting technique. There are several phenomena that can cause polarization when electrical current is passed through the ground. In a paper presented at the 1958 SEG* meetings Professor T. R. Madden of M. I. T. demonstrated that only two of these gave rise to appreciable effects. The first is a result of the membrane and diffusion effects in a sandstone that contains appre- ciable amounts of clay minerals. The unbonded charges associated with the clay mineral forma material that passes positive and negative ions with different mobilities. When current is passed through such a system for some period of time, polarization results. The second phenomenon, which gives rise to very much larger polarization effects, is the one used in the new prospecting technique. These effects are a result of the blocking action or polarization of metallic or electronic conductors in a medium of ionic solution conduction. This electrochemical polarization, called "the over-voltage effect" by electro-chemists, occurs whenever electrical current is passed through a volume of rock which contains metallic minerals such as base metal sulphides. This polarization at metallic interfaces in ionic solutions depends upon the chemical energies necessary to allow the ions to continue the flow of current by giving up or receiving an electron from the metallic surfaces. The energy stored in this reaction isanalogous to that stored when a condenser is charged. If a d. c. current flowing through such a system is interrupted, the polarization can be detected as a small, decaying current that flows after the applied current is discontinued. The decaying potential measured is a result of the current flow caused by charges returning to their equilibrium positions from the positions they assumed under the applied potential field. There is a large economic opportunity associated with improving metallurgical performance in mineral processing plants that use process control. Thus, future control systems will be developed towards more sophisticated user friendly, computer-based systems that use powerful software analysis and control techniques. Auto-tuning, adaptive control and process models will gain expanded use because of their transparent availability to the system designer. Control of individual unit operations will be optimized and coordinated through expert systems that monitor economic conditions and management directives and direct operations accordingly. Plant areas, once considered cost centers, will be integrated into plant-wide control systems for economic control and optimization. This article looks at new control hardware, process sensors, control strategies and software development tools. It also looks at the economics driving the continued development of advanced process control systems. Process control systems routinely used in the mining industry were born when the microprocessor was invented. They have continued along an evolutionary path from vendor specific processing hardware and proprietary operating systems to computer industry standard "open architecture" systems. The many economic forces that drive the development and functionality of these process control systems will cause this evolutionary process to continue. Stopes are used in several underground mining methods. Boundary determination of these stopes is generally based on simple rules of thumb. While several stope boundary optimisation techniques are available, they fail to guarantee true optimum results. The first part of this paper reviews some important stope boundary optimisation studies and proposes a new algorithm to optimise stope boundaries and layouts for underground operations. The second part applies the proposed algorithm to a block model to test its ability to produce optimum results and demonstrate its applicability in a number of different scenarios. The results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can find optimum stope boundaries and layouts in three dimensions for different stope sizes and economic conditions.

Arsenic (As) removal behavior from Changgoon mine tailings was investigated using Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (A. ferrooxidans) in well-controlled batch reactors by varying pulp density (0.5?4%, pH=1.8, temp=30oC), reaction initial pH (1.8?2.2, pulp density=0.5%, temp=30oC), and temperature (25?35oC, pulp density=0.5%, pH=1.8). The initial concentration of As in the mine tailings used for bioleaching tests was about 30000 ppm, and the size range of tailings used in this study was 63?74 µm. The reaction speed and initial cell concentration were fixed to 150 rpm and 107 cells/mL, respectively. To complement leaching experiments, pH, oxidation/reduction potential (ORP), and amount of ferrous/ferric ions in leachate were analyzed. Scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction analyses were also conducted for the samples before and after leaching to see if any morphological and compositional changes in tailings took place during leaching process. The As leaching efficiency increased with decreasing pulp density, decreasing pH, and increasing temperature in the presence of A. ferrooxidans. Specifically, no significant change in As removal rate was observed when pulp density d 2% while the removal rate dramatically decreased at pulp density of 4%. Regarding pH effect, As removal rate was much more enhanced at lower pHs (i.e., 1.8 and 2.0) compared to pH 2.2. Increasing temperature was observed to tend to enhance As removal rate, showing about 20% enhanced leaching rate under 35oC compared to 25oC and 30oC at the elapsed time of 5 days. The results for As removal behavior at different conditions (i.e., pH, temperature, pulp density) were consistent with the change in pH, ORP, and ferric ion concentration in leachate, showing greater removal rate at the condition with lower pH, and higher ORP and ferric ion concentration in leachate. Furthermore, decreasing removal efficiency was likely in part due to the extent of the formation of by-product (i.e., jarosite) of ferric ions.

This paper presents the design and construction of a multi-channel geophone array that improves tomographic imaging capabilities in both surface and underground mines. Especially important in the design of the array is sensor placement. Three issues related to sensor placement are addressed in this paper: 1) sensor placement in long, horizontal boreholes, 2) development of simple, robust, MSHA-acceptable clamping unit, and 3) orientation of the geophones within the borehole. Improved imaging capabilities will produce energy, environmental, and economic benefits by increasing exploration accuracy and reducing operating costs.

An ilmenite concentrate was reduced in the solid state with carbon under argon atmosphere at temperatures between 1000oC and 1400oC. The ilmenite concentrate and 50% excess carbon were reacted to achieve the highest attainable degree of reduction at each temperature and the reaction products were subjected to a series of analytical work by optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis and SEM ( EDS) analysis. The ilmenite remained unaltered at 1000oC and had a slight change in its composition at 1050oC. A secondary oxide phase containing metallic nuclei was detectable at 12% reduction at 1100oC. The reduction of TixOy took place in a sequence changing the y/x ratio from 2.0 to a value less than 1.0 at 84% reduction at 1400oC. Metallic phase consisted of Fe and C initially and started to include Ti at the later stages. Complete reduction of TixOy to metallic Ti was not possible at these temperatures.

Gold mining in Australia and globally has a long and variable history. In recent years, due to ongoing public concern over long-term environmental impacts, the mining industry globally has been moving towards a more sustainable framework, presented as the æMining, Minerals and Sustainable DevelopmentÆ (MMSD) framework at the Johannesburg Earth Summit in 2002. There are a number of fundamental issues and concerns with assessing the sustainability of mining. Firstly, long-term trends show that ore grades for almost all metals and minerals will continue to decline (some rapidly so), increasing waste rock is being produced due to the trend towards large-scale open cut mining and more complex ores are now commonly being developed. The impact of these trends on the resource intensity, or unit cost, of gold production is of major concern as it could lead to an increase in energy, water and reagent consumption and greenhouse emissions per unit gold produced. A detailed compilation of these fundamental sustainability indices for gold mining has been undertaken, and is presented with respect to indices over time, ore grade and ore throughput. A clear observation is that the resource intensity of gold mining is extremely sensitive to the ore grade, with energy, water and cyanide consumption and greenhouse emissions rising significantly as ore grade decreases. Based on the gold ore resources at operating mines and other known gold deposits, it is most likely that the average gold ore grade will continue to decline, leading to increased resource intensity and consequent environmental impacts (assuming no breakthrough new technologies occur). These findings are of major importance to understanding the sustainability of gold mining. The final judgement of the sustainability of gold mining therefore must take into account the sensitivity of the ore grade in the resource intensity of gold production.
