The St. Peter Sandstone is typically a well-sorted, friable, ultra-pure, fine- to medium-grained, quartzose sandstone with silica content higher than 99 weight percent in places. The sand grains are well-rounded, highly spherical and characteristically frosted. Their size typically varies from 2 millimeters diameter (No. 10 U.S. Standard Sieve Series size) to less than 0.08 millimeters diameter (No. 200 U.S. Standard Sieve Series size). A freshly exposed surface of the formation is commonly white with shades of pink and green. Weathered surfaces are a dirty gray or brown and are case-hardened at many localities. Bedding is characteristically indistinct, and the formation usually appears massive throughout. The rock is cross-bedded and ripple-marked locally. The formation is generally porous, permeable and rarely fossiliferous in Missouri. The St. Peter is continuously present in the subsurface in the northern half of the state and along the southeastern edge of the state. The St. Peter crops out in a narrow band that starts in western Montgomery County and runs southeastward, along the Missouri River, to just west of St. Louis and continues south, just west of the Mississippi River, through Scott County. The outcrop belt varies from less than one mile wide to over ten miles wide, and it is over 150 miles in length. The formation dips into the subsurface radially away from the outcrop band. A notable isolated outcrop occurs in Lincoln County to the north of the main outcrop band. The St. Peter is discontinuously present in the subsurface along a band in the west-central portion of the state. It is not present at the surface or in subsurface in the remainder of the state. The formation averages 80?100 feet thick. There is an estimated 3.8 trillion short tons of St. Peter in Missouri. Sieve analyses on drill cuttings indicate three subsurface locations in northeastern Missouri where the St. Peter is greater than 10 percent by weight of sand falling in the 20?40 U.S. Standard Sieve Series size range. The St. Peter was first produced in Missouri in the 1870s for the manufacture of glass. Since that time it has been used as a paint additive, filler material, polishing compound, filtering media, and recently it is commonly used as a fracture proppant in oil and gas wells. The St. Peter is currently quarried and produced in Missouri from four sites located in St. Louis, Jefferson and Perry counties. In the same area there are at least nine abandoned historic mine sites.

Introduction During the past 10 years, energy costs in mining have risen from about 4% to as much as 25% of total production cost. When combined with declining ore grades, these costs exert inordinate stress on mine productivity. Industrial engineering techniques have traditionally been aimed at improving manufacturing facilities productivity, but they have been applied to mining as pressure for productivity improvement has increased. These techniques can perform four useful functions for mining operations by improving methods, equipment selection procedures, energy use through scheduling, and managing energy costs rather than being managed by them. This article discusses some of the standard techniques for productivity improvement, and how they can be adapted to perform these four functions. Pre-Production The best time to seek high productivity is when a mine is being planned. During pre-production, when most options are still open, an optimum mine design is achievable. At this time, major equipment selections are made, the layout, material handling systems, and processes are designed, and critical energy source decisions are made. By including explicit energy cost projections, decisions can be made that will save significant amounts of money per ton of ore over the life of the mine. Attention can also be given to often overlooked details such as lighting. Some of the same tools used in new mine planning are applicable to productivity improvements at an existing plant. These tools are the charting and modeling methods that have been developed by industrial engineers over the past 75 years. Energy Consumption Before any analysis of energy consumption can be performed, preliminary work is necessary to find the kind of energy used, how much it costs the plant, and when electrical peaks occur. Past bills should be examined to determine the monthly consumption rate and the cost of each energy type. These data should be adjusted to remove effects caused by production fluctuations or weather. Knowing when electrical peak demands occur is necessary because these determine either the electrical capacity needed or the amount that must be bought. At $500-$800 per kW for construction or $5-$15 per kW per month for purchase, they represent a significant cost. By the time these data are collected, planners should be aware of the importance of energy in the total cost of mine operation, and should have the most crucial time data for electrical peak demand. Flow Process Chart Reducing costs can be accomplished by a thorough look at mine systems and how altering one system causes changes in others. By developing and exercising models of production processes outward to the transportation of the final product, otherwise obscured weaknesses may become apparent. There are tools available for analyzing the mine and its associated systems; one of the most useful is the flow process chart. The flow process chart gives a system analysis of a production procedure by classifying all actions into one of five types: operations, inspections, transportation, delays without paperwork, and delays with paperwork. Operation: In an operation, the nature of something is changed. Examples are blasting, washing coal, and processing matter. Denoted by 0. Inspection: Examining an object for identification or to measure some attribute. Examples are determining whether a drill hole is deep enough, deciding how far to cut under an unsupported roof when operating a continuous miner, or checking the lubricant level on a truck. Denoted bye. Transportation: Moving an object from one place to another. Examples are transporting overburden, moving coal on a conveyor belt, and pumping water. Denoted by =>. Delay without paperwork: A delay that is an inherent part of the system. Examples include idle time of a continuous miner while waiting for shuttle cars or for roof bolting, crushed ore in a storage area waiting for grinding and flotation, and people from one craft waiting for another craft to finish. Denoted by D. Delay with paperwork: A delay that can be terminated only by some written authorization. Examples are coal that cannot be removed until authorized by a bill of sale and transportation orders, personnel records, maintenance, or spare parts. Denoted by V. In practice, the flow process chart is completed after data collection and a detailed examination of the process. Data collection is needed to answer questions on distance, quantity, and time for each of the operations. As the analysis is being performed, each step of the process is subjected to these questions: • Why is the step necessary? • What is being moved? • When does the step take place, and why?

Chronic whole-body vibration exposure, as expected in large construction and mining vehicles, has been associated with neck and back pain and injury.1 While work has been done towards gaining a better understanding of the relationship between vibration and shock and muscle activity of the back musculature2, relatively little information regarding the activity of neck, shoulder and upper arm muscles is known. Today’s equipment designs must conform to domestic and international standards, however these standards do not specifically address the vibration exposure in the head and upper quarter. Further it is not well known how the control configuration within a vehicle (e.g. steering wheel versus arm controls) influences muscle voluntary and reflex activity levels. Greater muscle activity may lead to greater muscle fatigue – which in turn may be associated with greater risk of injury.2 Thus, muscle contractions needed to maintain static postures as well as those resulting reflexively should be considered during an analysis of seating position. Unfortunately, little is known regarding the influence of arm position on head and neck muscle function. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relative muscle activities of 5 neck, shoulder, and upper arm muscles during riding simulations of large construction equipment, using three different arm control options. Methods Five typical heavy equipment ride files were “played back” through a man-rated Servo Test 6-degree of freedom (dof) vibration system. Each ride was repeated using 3 seat and control configurations (steering wheel (SW), floor mounted arm-rest controls (FM), seat mounted arm-rest controls (SM)). Two trials were performed for each ride and seat control combination (each trial: 60 sec of 6-dof and 60 sec of vertical vibration). Five channels of surface electromyography (EMG) of the right-side cervical erector spinae muscles (neck extensors), sternocleidomastoid (neck flexor), upper trapezius (shoulder elevator), biceps brachii (elbow flexor) and triceps brachii (elbow extensor) muscles were collected throughout each ride (~ 2min) using pre-amplified (10x), 1 cm silver bar electrodes, with 1 cm fixed inter-electrode distances (Delsys, Inc). Further analog amplification was set at 10k (1k for one subject), and sampled at 1000Hz using a 12-bit DAQ card and Labview 7.1 software (National Instruments). A total of 7 right-handed male subjects were tested, but only 5 had complete EMG data sets to analyze for this sub-study. EMG was analyzed using root mean square (RMS, in mV) of 20 ms moving windows, and then averaged across the entire trial for a measure of mean total muscle activity (voluntary and reflexive). The muscle activity to maintain the static posture was estimated as the mean RMS EMG over a 1 sec interval just prior to and/or after completion of the ride. Repeated Measures ANOVAs were used to test for with-in subject differences using a = 0.05.

There is approximately 240 000 tonnes of arsenic trioxide dust stored in underground chambers at the Giant Mine in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada. To minimise the amount of arsenic released to the environment, a number of closure alternatives are being considered. One alternative is to mine the dust, encapsulate it and dispose the mixture into a secured landfill. The potential leaching behaviour of the encapsulated dust was examined in a laboratory programme. Cylinders of arsenic trioxide dust mixed with cement/aggregate and bitumen were prepared. The dust content varied between zero per cent and 60 per cent of dry weight charge. The cement cylinders were tested for strength, leaching and freeze/thaw durability. The bitumen cylinders were tested for leaching only. The results show that increasing dust content in the cement cylinders negatively impacts the strength and the freeze/thaw durability of the samples. A contributing factor is likely the high water to cement ratio in the samples. Leaching tests show that arsenic release from cement cylinders increase with increasing dust content. Arsenic concentrations in leachates do reach a plateau at a certain point in time. Arsenic release from bitumen cylinders was significantly lower compared to cement cylinders. Arsenic concentrations eventually were less than 0.05 mg/L in samples containing up to 25 per cent arsenic trioxide dust. Arsenic leaching rates were found to decrease by an order of magnitude over the course of three months.

The use of existing mine records in conjunction with an appropriate classification scheme can be used successfully to identify and characterize the composition of existing waste rock facilities where traditional approaches based on sampling may be impractical or costly. This paper describes an alternative approach used in an acid rock drainage investigation at a porphyry copper mine with numerous waste rock dumps of varying ages and composition. The approach integrated detailed lithologic and mineralogic information about the ore body and overburden materials with records of pit development and dispatch. A waste rock characterization matrix was developed for the site to meaningfully classify lithology and mineralogic composition of the waste rock. The approach resulted in a focused geochemical testing program and facilitated interpretation and application of the test results.

At the concentration plant of the Gol-E-Gohar Iron Ore Company (Iran) three 9m × 2.05m AG (Autogenous) mills (fixed speed) are used in parallel in a dry operation. The test works conducted in a scale down mill with a diameter of 1m indicated that conventionally used "deflector" type liners did not provide efficient environment for grinding. In this research, to improve the grinding efficiency, a new design using low profile end liners incorporating radial ribs of proper height was investigated. In order to determine an appropriate liner design at different operating conditions, a 100cm×10.8cm model mill was used for experimentation. The special design of model mill made it possible to increase the radial ribs height in steps of 6mm up to 18.5mm. The transparent end of the mill enabled accurate trajectory determination by image analysis. The results indicated that the new lower height profile deflectors and 15.5mm-height (14.5cm in industrial scale) radial ribs improved the mill performance while avoiding excessive pressure drop across the mill and wear on the liner. The image analysis showed that the use of new liners increased the distribution of coarse particles across the mill cross section from 28% to 35%. A new liner design was proposed by decreasing the number of liners in each slice from 5 to 4 pieces. The thickness of the inner head liners reduced from 45cm to 30cm and the outer deflector liners replaced by radial ribs. The distance between the feed and discharge inner head liners increased from the original 115cm to 145cm which increased the effective length of the mill by 26%. The new design reduced the weight and volume of end liners by 9% and 23%, respectively. It was predicted that the new liners design increases the mill throughput by 10% and reduces the metal consumption by 20%.

Sheeted vein gold deposits are characterised by multiple subparallel veins and often free milling gold. Variability in gold grade and recovery parameters are enhanced by poorly designed sampling and test work protocols. Poor quality samples generally equate to an enhanced nugget effect. A sample can be described as being representative when it results in acceptable levels of bias and precision. Total sampling variability can be quantified by the relative sampling variance, which measures the total empirical sampling variance influenced by the heterogeneity of the lot being sampled under the current sampling / test work protocol. Effort should be made to minimise the relative sampling variance through Theory of Sampling (TOS) and quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) application. This contribution reports on a case study that exemplifies how high-quality grade and recovery data can be gained from a well-designed and planned drilling, sampling and test work program, followed by bulk sampling. Results across historical resource drilling, geometallurgical drilling, laboratory assay / test work, geometallurgical modelling and a bulk sampling/pilot processing study are reconciled. A whole core, entire-sample test work protocol was used to acquire fit-for-purpose gold grade and recovery data for inclusion into a Pre Feasibility Study reported in accordance with the JORC Code.CITATION:Dominy, S C, O’Connor, L, Xie, Y and Glass, H J, 2017. Since 1999, the CWP level among miners with 25 years or more experience, for instance, has risen from slightly more than 4% to 9% (See Figure 1). While it is obviously necessary to protect all miners’ lungs, there is now a technology to improve the chances that new miners’ lungs will be protected from the day they begin work.

The dissolution of alumina and magnesia has been investigated using laser scanning confocal microscopy (alumina) and a rotating finger apparatus (magnesia) to assess the effects of temperature, composition and forced convection on the rate of dissolution in CaO-SiO2-Al2O3based slags. The two techniques have differing strengths and limitations, and provide complementary methods for studying dissolution. Alumina dissolution was studied for temperatures from 1477 to 1577°C. Based upon the data, the rate controlling mechanism was thought to be mass transfer control in the slag. The diffusion coefficients for the alumina particles are estimated to be in the range 10-11to 10-10m2.s. MgO degradation for sample rotation speeds of 50 to 800 rpm at 1500 and 1530°C was studied for both congruent and incongruent dissolution. The results show that the rate of dissolution for this is primarily controlled by a diffusion mass transfer mechanism for congruent dissolution except at the highest rotation speed. For incongruent dissolution, the mechanism is much more complex, with the morphology and distribution of the spinel reaction product having a significant effect. At high speeds and prolonged times, mechanical forces played a major role in the degradation process. The studied mine extracts the Sewickley seam using room-and-pillar method. The overburden at study site ranges from 400 to 800 ft. Eight years earlier, the Pittsburgh seam was mined 80 ft underneath the Sewickley seam. Parts of the mains at the study site experienced problems of rib spalling associated with floor heave. Numerical modeling was used to explain the mechanism of ground control problems encountered at the mains of the upper seam. The modeling results show that the ground control problems encountered were caused by multiple seam interactions with the previously mined longwall panel of the lower seam. Based on the modeling results, a criterion to predict the probability of multiple seam interactions was proposed.

This report describes a program whose objective was to develop, design, fabricate and laboratory-test two prototype instruments capable of real-time selective detection and measurement of airborne fibrous-shaped particles. The operation of this fibrous aerosol monitor (FAM) is based on the rotation imparted to the acicular particles by means of a rotating quadrupole electric field of the order of 3000 V/cm. This field induces a dipole charge separation on the fibers and aligns them with the applied field. The selective detection of the fibers is effected by synchronous detection of the resulting modulation of the light scattered from a continuous-wave helium-neon laser beam by the rotating particles. The theory of operation, design of the electric-optical detection configuration and the electronic signal processing method are discussed. By means of a scattering pulse sharpness discrimination technique, fibers whose length exceed a selectable value are detected and their number concentration digitally displayed. Counting times of 1 to 1000 minutes permit the measurement of fiber concentrations between 0.001 and about 30 cm-3. A concentration of the order of one fiber per cubic centimeter can be assessed within a relative standard deviation of 10 percent with a counting period of 10 minutes. The FAM is a portable, battery-powered instrument capable of operating continuously for about 4 hours between battery charges. Preliminary tests with crocidolite and crysotile asbestos as well as with glass fibers were performed in the laboratory and the results indicate good correlation with the standard NIOSH phase contrast microscopy filter counting method.

The thermodynamic properties for the CaO-CaF2and CaO-BaO systems were calculated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation using Born-Mayer-Huggins type pair potential. The parameters of interatomic potential were obtained by fitting the thermodynamics properties of CaO, CaF2and BaO with the experimental data. The phase diagrams for the CaO-CaF2 and CaO-BaO systems were calculated by the thermodynamic properties obtained by MD simulation. The eutectic composition and temperature of the CaO-CaF2system calculated by MD simulation were about 28 mole per cent CaO and 1575K, respectively. The calculated eutectic point agrees very well with experimental data, which are about 22 mole per cent CaO and 1633K, respectively. An absorption-desorption model of particle reactivity was employed to describe the observed relationship between two apparently diverse phenomena which have been the subject of considerable study at the U.S. Bureau of Mines: (1) coal-rock dust reflectance and (2) coal-rock dust explosibility. The model accounts for heterogeneities in particle-size and material properties; however, in the present report, only particle-size distribution is considered. A mean particle-size parameter, appropriate to the explosion extinction process, is derived, and then taken as appropriate to describing optical reflectance. The derived form-to-function relationships for the two processes, when compared with experimental data, suggest that a problem exists with previously derived theory relating optical reflectance to rock dust concentration. A reexamination of that theory leads to a new theoretical expression, changed by a factor of 2, for the variation of rock dust concentration with reflectance which is in quite good agreement with experimental results. The current work offers justification for measuring and establishing rock dust requirements for specific coal dust size distribution(s) found in the mine-distributions that undoubtedly depend on the mining method and the type of coalbed.

It has had considerable experience in particular in the reclamation of gold mine tailings in the Canadian Shield since the latter part of the sixties when most gold mines were closing down.A typical example is the famous Hollinger Mine in Timmins which produced $566 million worth of metal from 1910 to 1968 and had left behind some 56 million tons of tailings covering about 1,000 acres which were reclaimed on very short order and are now lush meadows of agricultural quality.To date, practically all gold mine tailings have been reclaimed once and for all by establishing a permanent, self-sustaining and maintenance free vegetation cover.RECLAMATION & THE MINING TOWNSThe first appreciation of people in a mining community where the tailings have been revegetated will be noticing one day the elimination of dusty conditions that used to arise formerly on every dry and windy day. In that respect, EROCON encourages not only vegetating the tailings but also the immediate surroundings of the mills and plants themselves at active mines. The elimination of windborne dust will result in an appreciable decrease in maintenance costs of plant and machinery and more pleasant working conditions for all."

Historically bauxite-based refractories have been used in applications where andalusite-based refractories could work. Bauxite-based refractories were chosen over andalusite-based refractories mainly because of the availability of low-cost Chinese bauxite and also because many furnaces were designed by international companies that cannot easily access high-quality products. Currently, the availability of low-cost bauxite is under threat as a result of high export duties and tariffs as well as restrictions on the amount of material that China allows to be exported. South Africa is a major producer of andalusite, and this guarantees stability with respect to both availability and price. Refractories based on andalusite have an added economic advantage over bauxite-based refractories in that unlike bauxite, which requires high-temperature calcination before use, andalusite is used in its raw state. This paper constitutes a literature study of the merits, both technical and economic, of using refractories based on andalusite compared to bauxite-based refractories. A supply chain encompasses all the activities associated with the flow and transformation of goods from the raw materials stage(extraction), through to the end user. Supply chain management (SCM) is the integration of these activities through improved supply chain relationship, to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage and it rests on its ability to provide the right goods and services when and where needed. The supply chain is the vital component of any company?s value chain which links the operating processes to its supplier and customer. The globalization of business promises to offer new and unique challenges for the supply chain competencies of most firms. Challenges will also increase in the environmental aspects of supply chain often referred to as ?Green Issues?. The supply chain of mining industry comprises of the flow of material and information from the mine site, to processing and loading for transport, to the customer. However, due to recent changing environmental requirements affecting mining and mineral processing operations, increasing attention is given to developing environmental management (EM) strategies for the mineral supply chain. This paper focuses on: ? Environmental factors leading to the development of an extended environmental supply chain, ? Additional challenges presented by the extension, ? Performance measures appropriate for the extended supply chain, ? Developing a general procedure towards achieving and maintaining the green supply chain.
