The minerals industry is facing a productivity and investment crisis. The ‘Millennium Super Cycle’ from 2003–2011 was an unprecedented period of growth and investment resulting in increased throughput and development of lower grade resources to meet demand. During the boom quantity became more important than quality with throughput the key metric. This was accompanied by a general trend of decreasing feed grades across all commodities that was offset with higher production volumes.Current industry perception is that feed grade depletion is an unavoidable consequence of ore deposit geology and mass mining technologies for increasingly mature mining operations. In typical crush-grind-float operations value recovery only takes place at ~1–200 micron particle size during flotation, ie 3–4 orders of magnitude size reduction compared to primary feed. For increasingly low-grade deposits the cost of energy and capital intensity required to process and reject low value material at micron scale drives poor productivity. An alternative is to deploy a range of coarse (~10–100 mm) separation and rejection technologies. Grade Engineering® is an integrated approach to coarse rejection that matches a suite of separation technologies to ore specific characteristics and compares the net value of rejecting low value components in current feed streams to existing mine plans.Coarse rejection can be used on size distributions ranging from run-of-mine (ROM) to semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) discharge. Grade Engineering® is based on five rock based ‘levers’ linked to combinations of screening, sensor-based sorting and heavy media separation. These involve exploitation of preferential grade deportment to specific size fractions during breakage: differential blasting to condition grade by size at bench scale; sensor based sorting at truck and conveyor scale; and differential particle density.Grade Engineering® is being developed and implemented by a consortium of over 30 mining companies, equipment suppliers and research organisations. Emerging results from collaborative site activities demonstrate potential for generating significant value, which can reverse the trend of declining productivity due to feed grade depletion.CITATION:Walters, S G, 2017. The effects of microwave treatment on the floatabilities and magnetic susceptibilities of some sulfide minerals, namely, pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite, were studied. Pure mineral samples were prepared in -425+212-µm, -212+106-µm and -106+38-µm size fractions. Microflotation and magnetic separation tests were carried out on the samples after microwave treatment at 600, 950 and 1,300 Watts for 5, 20, 60, 90, 120 and 240 seconds. The maximum temperature values of the samples were measured during the microwave treatment, and possible altera-tions on the mineral surfaces were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The effects of microwave treatment are discussed based on the result of microflotation and magnetic separation tests. The results revealed that pyrite, chalcopyrite and galena were heated very quickly and that their surface temperatures reached ~700° to 900°C, while the temperature of sphalerite reached only ~130°C. The floatability of pyrite, chalcopyrite and galena were decreased when microwave energy and the duration of treatment were increased, owing to oxidation of the mineral surfaces caused by relatively high temperature. As expected, there was no change in the floatability of sphalerite. The magnetic properties of pyrite and chalcopyrite were improved by the increase in microwave energy and the duration of treatment to such an extent that 90% of the feed separated as magnetic product. But no change was observed in the magnetic properties of galena and sphalerite.

The Smuggler is one of the mines in the Aspen district, located the central part of Pitkin County, Colo. It was first examined in July 1943 by C. R. Wilfloy, former mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines at Salt Lake City, Utah, in, company with the lessees, R. D. Rohlfing of Aspen and J. W. Vanderwilt of Denver. The purpose of this examination was to sample a mineralized breccia zone that appeared continuous along the contact between the Leadville and Weber formations. These preliminary samples showed that the zone contains low but significant amounts of lead and zinc and that the minerals are partly oxidized and thus not easily concentrated. The mine was examined again in May 1946 by the senior author and William Herron, one of the present lessees of the property. This examination reviewed the previous sampling and recommended investigations by the Bureau of Mines. Sampling and drilling investigations were conducted by the Bureau from October 1946 to February 1947 and again from August 1947 to April 1948. Aspen is the center of a famous mining district that produced over $102,000,000 in silver and lead ores from 1880 to 1918, when a dispute closed down the mines (fig. 1). All of the workings below the Cowenhoven tunnel in Smuggler Mountain and the lower Durant tunnel in Aspen Mountain have been flooded since that time. The Cowenhoven portal now is caved, and Smuggler Nos. 1 and 2 tunnels are the only accessible workings in Smuggler Mountain. The only operating mine is the Midnight, situated 4 miles south of town at an altitude of 9,700 feet.

Two Hg-Au occurrences west of Bangko, Sumatra occur within the West Sumatra Permian Volcanic Plutonic Arc. The Melipun Hg-Au occurrence was exploited in the past and mineralisation occurs within a hydrothermally altered cupola of a buried intrusion. The Salak Hg-Au occurrence occurs within the outcrop of the Dusunbaru pluton, likely within the remnants of a caldera in which hydrothermal mineralisation was developed. Both occurrences formed late in the history of the volcanic arc, probably between the Triassic and early Jurassic. This report describes a program to develop, design, fabricate and subject to environmental testing three prototype collection-sensing devices of an eventual mining-machine mounted automated monitor for the measurement of the respirable fraction of coal mine dust to determine both short-term as well as average mass concentrations over typical 8-hour shifts. The design of this instrument is based on collection by filtration and mass sensing by beta-radiation attenuation. The emphasis of this development program was to evolve a rugged, stable and reliable collection-detection head compatible with the environment to which An eventual monitor will be subjected. Laboratory testing of this prototype instrument was performed over a representative range of temperature, humidity, dust concentration and composition, shock and vibration. The results of this testing program indicated that the operation of the prototype version His compatible with these environmental conditions and that further development of this configuration into a field operational device is justified.

A number of challenges face platinum concentrator plant operators. These challenges include the increase in operating costs, the increase in smelter cost for the processing of concentrate, the shortage and cost of power, and the tightening of specifications on concentrate quality by the toll-smelting operations. Over the years the focus has moved from extracting the platinum group metals (PGM) from the Merensky Reef to the UG2 reef. This has a number of advantages, including the higher ?basket price? for UG2 concentrate, reduced mining cost per unit volume as a result of the higher density of UG2, and the reduction in overall concentrate tonnage to be smelted. In many cases the Merensky ore has been fully exploited and it makes sense for the focus to shift to the UG2 ore that can be accessed through the Merensky shaft infrastructure. The presence of relatively high levels of chromite in UG2 concentrate is, however, a major disadvantage due to the problems associated with smelting such a concentrate in conventional submerged arc furnaces. In addition to increasing the specification on the minimum PGM grade of concentrates, smelters have had to impose strict specifications on the levels of chromite in the concentrate. The threat of high penalties has forced concentrators to change their modus operandi, often resulting in a significant loss in recovery. The final concentrate grades and PGM recoveries are shown to vary significantly throughout the industry. The reasons for this include varying ore mineralogy and different operating philosophies. This would therefore imply that the opportunity exists to optimize the operations by considering fundamental aspects such as the PGM mineralogy and the application of appropriate technologies. By returning to the fundamentals of flotation and applying the findings of detailed process reviews, it has been possible to increase the concentrate PGM grade, reduce the concentrate chromite grade, and in some cases increase the recovery of PGM to concentrate. This paper presents case studies where this approach has been used to successfully optimize concentrator performance, resulting in lower operating cost and higher PGM production. "The Hampton Roads area encompassing the Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Newport News metropolitan region experiences some of the worst traffic congestion in Virginia. With continued growth of the ports and increasing demand, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) initiated the Downtown Tunnel/Midtown Tunnel/MLK Expressway Project, a complex undertaking critical to addressing the Hampton Roads area’s transportation needs. The project is a $2.1 billion Design/Build/Finance/Operate (DBFO) endeavor most notably involving the construction of a new two-lane vehicular tunnel utilizing the Immersed Tube Tunnel (ITT) method. The tunnel will pass under the Elizabeth River parallel to the existing Midtown Tunnel between Norfolk and Portsmouth, Va. It will be the largest design-build project constructed in the history of the Hampton Roads District.The New Midtown Tunnel will extend approximately 6,450 ft (1,966 m) along the north side of the existing tunnel where it ties into the existing Midtown Tunnel approaches in Norfolk and Portsmouth. It is being installed in a pre-excavated trench of which approximately 2,250 ft (686 m) required bracing on the Portsmouth side and approximately 1,000 ft (305 m) required bracing on the Norfolk side. The remaining 3,200 ft (975 m) of trench excavation was open cut dredging with laid back side slopes, optimized to reduce dredging, disposal and backfill quantities while also reducing the risk to the existing tunnel. The braced excavation portions of the tunnel alignment were divided into distinct segments which include: Portsmouth Approach Boat Section, Portsmouth Approach Cut-and-Cover Section, Portsmouth Dredge Section, Norfolk Dredge Section, Norfolk Approach Cut-and- Cover Section and the Norfolk Approach Boat Section. All “approach” excavations were performed in the dry and all “dredge” excavations were performed in the wet. Eleven ITT segments are being fabricated in the Sparrows Point Dry Dock facility in Baltimore, Md., and each 14,000 ton (12,700 tonne) segment is being towed approximately 220 mi (354 km) to the site. The ITT segments will extend under the Elizabeth River, with the deepest crossing 90 ft (27 m) at the Federal Navigation Channel. Once beyond the channel limits the ITT rises at an approximate 4.5% slope. Controlled screeding and element lowering operations will be performed primarily from floating barges."

In-place leaching is being actively utilized to extract uranium, copper, and evaporites from low-grade and difficult-to-mine ores. The purpose of this report is to discuss in-place leaching technology, its advantages and disadvantages, and to give an overview of past, current, and envisioned in-place leaching operations in the U.S.A. Application of in-place leaching to uranium ores has been particularly successful because the conditions for leaching are nearly ideal. The ores are generally in highly permeable sandstone aquifers bounded above and below by impermeable shales. The uranium ore minerals are easily leached with oxidizing acid or base solution and the pregnant solutions are amenable to ion exchange concentration and purification prior to conventional solution neutralization for recovery of yellow cake. Copper is routinely recovered from sub-grade rock by dump leaching at most major copper mines. Acidified ferric sulfate is either sprayed on the surface of the dumps or is ponded on top of the dumps. The leaching solution migrates down through the rock and dissolves copper. The solution is collected from the base of the dumps and copper is recovered by solvent extraction-electrowinning or by cementation on detinned steel cans. True in-place copper leaching is being practiced in the caved stopes of an exhausted underground copper mine. Other innovative in-place copper leaching techniques have been tested commercially and laboratory- and pilot-scale experiments have been conducted to investigate proposed in-place leaching techniques for extracting copper from difficult-to-treat chalcopyrite ores. Solution mining of evaporites is being conducted commercially for the extraction of sodium chloride and potassium chloride. A large-scale experimental project for solution mining of trona has been undertaken.

Introduction Coal has always been China's predominant energy resource. The country ranks among the three richest countries in coal reserves in the world, next to the US and the Soviet Union. According to China's Ministry of Coal Industry (MCI), coal accounted for about 72% of the total national energy consumption. Despite efforts to increase the output of oil and hydropower, coal is predicted to remain dominant on the energy scene by increasing its share to 77% by the turn of the century. To match the rapid growth in the agricultural and industrial sectors, MCI has targeted the coal industry to double coal output from 600 Mt/a (660 million stpy) in 1981 to 1.2 Gt/a (1.3 billion stpy) by the year 2000. How is this goal to be achieved? According to MCI, it will be accomplished by: • building new underground and surface mines with a total output of 400 Mt/a (440 million stpy); • increasing the output of existing state-controlled mines from the present 344 Mt/a (368 million stpy) to 400 Mt/a (440 million stpy); and • developing and increasing the output of small, local mines run by province, county, and production brigade from the present 276 Mt/a (304 million stpy) to 400 Mt/a (440 million stpy). Building new underground and surface mines New underground coal mines will be developed in areas where the coal industry has already made headway and infrastructures currently exist. This is to optimize hardpressed capital spending on investment. Ten existing coal production bases were selected in nine different provinces that met these requirements. The underground mines scheduled to be constructed in stages at he existing coal production bases will have a total output of 200 Mt/a (220 million stpy) by the end of the century. Regarding surface mines, four mines in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and one in Shanxi province have been earmarked for construction during the same period. By the year 2000, these surface mines are expected to produce 200 Mt/a (220 million stpy). Foreign equipment, machinery, and surface mine stripping technology were all involved in different degrees in the development of the five new surface mines. Some have signed joint venture agreements. Occidental Petroleum Corp. is in a joint venture with China in developing Ping-shou's 15 Mt/a (16.5 million stpy) Antaibao No. 1 open-pit. The Shentou power station, situated nearby, is anticipated to consume 3.2 Mt/a (3.5 million stpy) of the coal it produces. Some is designated for export. Increasing output There are 554 state-controlled mines that have been in operation since before 1980. They produce 344 Mt/a (379 million stpy). To increase capacity, MCI has laid out some guidelines. • Coal prospecting near existing mines must be given top priority and intensified so that workable reserves can be increased. This would lengthen the mines' useful life. • Many mines and slopes that were constructed during the 1950s are very small and densely populated. These small mines and slopes are generally very short along the strike. As a result, coal faces and levels require frequent

Waste areas of a mine should be sealed especially if there is a risk of spontaneous combustion. Leakage through and around such seals can be problematic. Pressure balancing has been one of the favored options to prevent the ingress of air into these waste areas. Balance chambers require maintenance and monitoring to ensure that they are effective. This paper explores the use of inert gas as a means of controlling ingress of air and egress of waste gases as a means of reducing leakage around seals.

"Copper sulphate is a common flotation reagent for blende ores. Metallic iron also is present in the mill circuit, and a reaction between the iron and the salt would be in accord with well-known chemistry. The abundance of metallic iron in a flotation feed may be noted by even perfunctory examination. First of all the mine contributes metallic iron, then the coarse-crushing machines add their share, and finally the fine-grinding medium its portion. If the grinding is with cast-iron balls the amount of metallics is greater than when steel is used. Thus it is that much more metallic iron is present than would be indicated by noting the ball consumption. An estimate that the total amount of metallics is twice that supplied by the balls and liners might not be far amiss.That copper sulphate plates out on iron in an acid solution is well known, but since flotation is practiced commonly in solutions where acid has not been added this reaction has not been given sufficient thought.This problem has been the basis of a study undertaken jointly by the Mississippi Valley Station of the United States Bureau of Mines and the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, at Rolla, Missouri. Its importance may be understood better when the tonnage of zinc ores now being treated by flotation in this country is considered. According to Gaudin4 5,536,244 tons of zinc or were treated by flotation during 1927. In these operations copper sulphate was employed as an activating agent; the amount per ton averaged 0.81 pound for straight sulphide zinc ores and 1.16 pounds for complex ores. Since such large quantities of zinc ore are treated by flotation and since metallic iron is always present, the importance of studying their reactions on each other and the effect of their reaction"

The Mission Valley Viaduct is located in San Diego, California. This structure is the intersection of Interstate 8 and 805. The project consists of the main viaduct, 8 connecting ramps, and one highway overpass. This job was originally built back in the 70's. After the Loma Prieta Earthquake in 1989, Caltrans began an aggressive program to seismic retrofit all of its bridges throughout the state. Most retrofit designs required major upgrades to the existing footings. These footing upgrades consisted of either driven or drilled shaft piling. The existing footings of the Mission Valley interchange were supported on driven H pile. The soils throughout the site were dense sands and gravels, cobbles, occasional boulders with a dense sandstone bearing strata, which varied through out the site. It was this sandstone strata that the engineers designed their pile tips around. High ground water in sandy soils created a high probability of liquefaction in all of the upper stratas.

This report describes the use of the sprayfan auxiliary ventilation system for methane and dust control on continuous miner sections to potential users. The sprayfan auxiliary ventilation system is a modified water spray system which directs intake air to and across the front of a continuous miner to prevent build up of methane gas and dust concentrations. This user's manual contains practical information concerning sprayfan: a. Description and capabilities b. Design c. Installation d. Operation e. Maintenance. Underground tests, independent laboratory tests, tests by MSHA, and independent installations by coal producers have confirmed the performance of the sprayfan system. There are currently 150 sprayfan systems in operation in underground coal mines.

A series of pile load tests (maintained load tests, constant rate of penetration tests at different rates, and statnamic tests) was carried out on an instrumented model pile installed in clay beds prepared by consolidation of a slurry in a calibration chamber. The total load, shaft resistance and end bearing during the pile load tests were investigated. Following this, alternative methods of deriving the static load-settlement curve from a Statnamic test in clay taking into account damping effects have been proposed. These methods have then been used to interpret a statnamic test on a full size instrumented pile installed in a stiff glacial till.

In accordance with the 57th section of the Explosives Act, 1875, the following report on the working of the Act during the year ending December 31, 1903, is submitted. There have been no modifications of the law during the year. No complaint is made of any falling off in the general condition of factories and magazines, and in one instance only during the year have legal proceedings been taken for any irregularity. The occupiers of factories and magazines have invariably shown perfect readiness to remedy any defects, and the managers have themselves in many instances introduced improvements tending towards greater safety. The number of deaths (5) from accidents by fire or explosion in the manufacture of explosives is below the average for the decade (6•4). Looking to the large number of persons employed in this trade, the number of deaths is not excessive and will compare favorably with the death-rate in other dangerous trades. Notwithstanding the large increase in the manufacture of explosives, the average number of deaths has greatly decreased since the passing of the Explosives Act, whereas the number of fatal accidents with explosives under conditions to which the Act does not apply appears to increase with the extension of trade.

Vanadium mineralization occurs in oxide-rich horizons within layered metagabbro zones of the Sinarsuk deposit, West Greenland. The main oxide minerals are vanadiferous magnetite and ilmenite, comprising 30% to 90% of the rock volume and the ratio of magnetite to ilmenite ranges from 3:2 to 4:1. Ore microscopy shows that magnetite and ilmenite vary between 0.2 mm and 4.5 mm in grain size, but locally they are coarser grained. Grains are subhedral to euhedral and annealed suggesting that they will liberate very well upon grinding. Electron microprobe analyses indicate that magnetite grains are homogeneous and have a vanadium content, in different mineralized samples, ranging from 1.93 wt% to 2.68 wt% equivalent V2O5. Ilmenite hosts abundant and variably sized hematite lamellae, and it has vanadium contents ranging from 0.32 wt% to 0.59 wt% equivalent V2O5. Preliminary beneficiation of two composite bulk samples shows the samples can be beneficiated fairly easily using low-intensity magnetic separation at a coarse grind (106 microns to 600 microns) to yield a vanadiferous magnetite concentrate. The presence of hematite lamellae in ilmenite prevents recovery of a satisfactory ilmenite concentrate. The most likely beneficiation flowsheet would encompass a primary mill (SAG or rod mill), which would grind to about 600 microns, followed by a rougher magnetic separation stage. The rougher magnetic concentrate would be reground in a ball mill until suitable liberation is achieved. The reground material would then be cleaned in further LIMS stages. However, further laboratory testing is required to establish the final beneficiation program. This work demonstrates the value of mineralogical investigation in guiding and explaining the results of beneficiation processes.

In 2005, El Teniente mine began preconditioning the primary rock mass by hydraulic fracturing (HF). The major perceived benefits of this process are a decrease in the magnitude of the expected maximum seismic event and improved cave propagation. In addition, HF has resulted in new information on the propagation pressures of each fracture. Previous studies have attempted to relate propagation pressure to minor principal stress or confining stress.Considering the spatial continuity of propagation pressure and the significant quantity of collected data since the incorporation of the HF technique, minimum requirements for geostatistical modelling have been reached, permitting robust estimates inside the representative volume with acceptable errors (Cornejo, Muñoz and Rojas, 2012; Cornejo and Landeros, 2013). These results are then used to identify zones with higher magnitudes, which are mostly related to more complex geotechnical zones (intrusive and major faults) and caving singularities, making it possible to estimate the spatial extension of these zones.Finally, these results are integrated with other geomechanics aspects to support risk analysis of the mining plan.CITATION:Cornejo, J, Landeros, P, Benado, D, Caviedes, C and Pinochet, A, 2016.
