Estimates of the "plasticity" of a metal are commonly deduced from three types of test—tensile, torsion and impact. The several results have been more or less at variance, though this disparity has attracted little notice, largely perhaps because they have been expressed in different terms. The discrepancy between the results of the three tests becomes obvious when each is made at a series of low temperatures, for the temperature range within which the "plasticity" of iron largely disappears proves to be very different in the three types of test. The rather abrupt disappearance of "plasticity" of iron within a narrow temperature range cannot be due to any physicochemical change (such as a precipitation) taking place in the material at that time, because the original plasticity is immediately regained when the temperature of the material is brought above the sensitive range. Accordingly this difference in behavior shows that the "plasticity" of a metal depends upon the mode of action of the stresses which produce the deformation, and therefore upon the method of test. Analysis of the stresses leads to the conclusion that the observed plasticity of a metal is determined by the relation between its resistance to rupture by separation and its resistance to shear (slip), on the one hand, and between the effective normal and shearing stresses on the other; and that the relation between the two resistances does not in general remain constant with change of temperature, and may somehow be altered to some extent by the previous treatment of the specimen. This suggests the view that the results of none of the usual mechanical tests are directly comparable even for a single metal tested at a series of temperatures, or for a series of metals at one temperature, because the proportion of the total resistance of the metal to the test contributed by the

This report describes an experiment which was conducted to compare the relative bumping hazard of a low and high profile hard hat (helmet) in a low seam mining environment. The study was specifically designed to assess the effect of lowering the helmet profile on frequency of head impacts in an underground low seam coal mine simulator. This involved subjects performing four common low coal mining tasks wearing the low and high profile helmets in the low seam simulator (36" and 48? heights). The results of the study indicated that a low profile helmet could reduce bumping frequency in underground low coal approximately 25%, and as much as 80% on selected tasks. It was beyond the scope of the study to measure the impact force, thus it was not possible to estimate the effect of the low profile helmet on severity of impacts underground. The research team recommended that a more extensive investigation be made of head injuries experienced in low seam mining (both underground and surface) with the objective being to assess the impact of a low profile helmet on total head accident exposure.

In an attempt to reduce the potential for fish mortality during the explosive demolition of Locks and Dam 26, Mississippi River, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District explored the use of a bubble curtain to reduce the fish kill radius of underwater explosions. Bubble curtains are walls of bubbles rising from a bottom-resting bubbler manifold supplied with compressed air. Demolition engineers have long been aware of the attenuating properties of air bubbles in water. As such, air curtains have been routinely used to protect underwater structures from damage by underwater explosive shock waves. However, their use in protecting aquatic resources during full-scale explosive demolition projects was untested.

A good quality assurance program at a coal mine or power plant is accurate, timely and consistent. The quality analysis is accurate due to a complete sampling of the coal stream loaded into the unit train. The sample analysis is accurate because standardized testing procedures are applied. Once an analysis is completed, the results must be communicated to the electric utility in a timely manner. The electric utility needs the results to better manage the coal inventory at its power plants. A quality assurance program can also help a mine deliver a consistent product to a utility's power plants. The importance of accuracy, timeliness and consistency are based on major changes that are taking place in the electric utility industry.

Tlze influence of zirconium hydride precipitate mprphology on the fructure of Zr-H alloys tested at strain rates of 10- sec at 20° and - 196°C and at strain rates of -500 sec.-1 at 20°C has been inves-tigated. The critical stage in the embrittlement of these alloys was the fracture of the zirconium hyhide precipitates to form large interval cracks at a stress of 25,000 10 137,000 psi. In specimens con-temping up to 100 ppm H the preciptates existed as isolafed platelets in the zirconium matrix and their fracture as enhanced by low temperature (—196°C) and high strain rate (-500 set-f) loading. These resl~lts lead to the conclusion that the rate of strain hardening of the zirconium metal controls the frac-tzrm of the hydride platelets. Increased hydrogen contents of 500 to 2000 ppm resulted in an increase in the 1)volume fraction and size of precipitates and crlso led to crack propogation in the hydride at both 20 and —196C at the low strain rates (10'* sec-'). Quenching led to refinerment of hydride precipitate size and reduced the degree of embrittlement at — 196°C; this effect is attributed to the absence of fracture of the fine precipitates. The formation of zirconium hydride precipitates has been shown to be the cause of hydrogen embrittlement of zirconium.' Several investigators'-" have studied the problem in broad outline, demonstrating that impact-loading conditions, testing temperatures below room temperature, and increasing hydrogen content produce increased brittleness. For example, Muehlenkamp and schwope2 showed that the transition temperature for notched impact tests was raised from 150" to 350°C on increasing the hydrogen content from 45 to 490 ppm. The degree of embrittlement is also controlled by the morphology of the zirconium hydride precipitates. The solubility of hydrogen in zirconium decreases from 600 ppm at 550°C to 10 ppm at 20"C,~ so that the form of the zirconium hydride precipitates (ZrH2) can be modified by varying the cooling rate through the Zr-aZr + ZrH2 phase boundary.= Forscher showed that quenching a specimen containing 35 ppm H from above 315°C resulted in a reduction in area of 70 pct at -196"C, whereas slowly cooling from above 315°C resulted in a ductility of half this value. The role of the hydride precipitate in the fracture process has been examined by Young and schwartz6 and more recently by westlake.' From metallo-graphic observations on slowly cooled Zr-H alloys they have suggested that cracks are nucleated in the hydride precipitates by the interactions of twins in the zirconium metal with the hydride. The experiments reported in this paper show that crack propagation in the zirconium hydride precipitates is the critical stage in the embrittlement of Zr-H alloys. The factors influencing fracture of the hydride precipitates and crack propagation in the zirconium metal will be related to the problem of embrittlement. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES The zirconium used in these experiments was produced from an ingot of vacuum arc-melted iodide zirconium forged down to 1 in. diameter at 800' to 850°C. "New tax rules that can apply to the repayment, extinguishment, or other settlement of a company's debt are finally taking shape. These new rules are far-reaching in their application, and can affect mining companies in a serious, negative way.IntroductionIn his February 1994 budget, Finance Minister Paul Martin announced changes to the Income Tax Act that could have an adverse impact on a company that restructures its debt. Since then, the new rules have undergone considerable transformation during their fetal stage: draft legislation was introduced in July 1994; revised draft legislation was introduced December 1994; and a third version of draft legislation was introduced February 1995. It seems that the new rules have now been pretty well finalized, and they contain some serious traps that the unwary could fall into. The new rules are of particular importance to mining companies, because a mining company's resource pools will be caught under the new rules, whereas these pools escaped the wrath of the old rules. The following commentary summarizes the new rules that are generally referred to as the ""debt forgiveness"" rules."

"The Altair TiO2 pigment process is based on hydrochloric acid leaching of ilmenite at high-acid concentration. Titanium is transferred by solvent extraction into a high-purity aqueous stream with a high titanium concentration. HCl gas is recovered by pressure-swing distillation and is used to regenerate the leaching solution.A new method of TiO2 recovery in dense film with simultaneous dehydration and hydrolysis provides great flexibility in adjusting the characteristics of the TiO2 pigment product.Modifications of this method lead to a flexible, low-cost, high-tonnage process first for the production of nano-sized TiO2, and later for stabilized zirconia-based nanomaterials and nano-sized titanates.IntroductionProcesses for the production of TiO2 from ore by a hydrochloric acid route have been proposed in the past. Most of these processes dissolve impurities and recover TiO2 as a residue or as a hydrolyzed phase in the original solution (Turner, 1948; Berkovich, 1975; Morris, 1982; Judd, 1986; Chao, 1993). Solvent extraction of titanium after leaching in aqueous HCl has also been studied (Tsuchida et al., 1982; Narita et al., 1983) or at least mentioned as an alternative (Ellis, 1963). A number of small-scale studies on leaching and solvent extraction in both sulphuric and hydrochloric systems have appeared recently (John et al., 1999; Lanyon et al., 1999; Sole et al., 1999. As far as we know, only Kerr-McGee (Morris, 1982) and a plant in India and one in Malaysia use a hydrochloric acid route (20 wt% HCl) to commercially produce synthetic rutile.The Altair process originated in a search for an economical method to treat high-magnesium ilmenite deposits, while avoiding the production of a waste metal salt by-product. The first attempts aimed at producing pure TiO2 by leaching out the impurities. Further work centred on completely dissolving the ilmenite in concentrated hydrochloric acid and reprecipitating TiO2. To decrease the impurity level in the product, solvent extraction of titanium into a purified stream was introduced. It also became clear that to take full advantage of the increase in leaching efficiency provided by concentrated acid, it was necessary to regenerate HCl gas."

A description of early dewatering practices includes a number of case histories; later dewatering practices also are detailed with case histories. There were disasters and some successes. Grouting generally was not successful. Deep wells are technically feasible and generally the economical solution to deep basement construction.

This report describes the engineering feasibility and economic advantages of using a mobile bridge-type cross-pit belt conveyor system in conjunction with a large dragline to excavate and transport spoils in a typical Western surface coal mine. The studies show that such a system could be built to survive operational and climatic mining conditions, and that its implementation would offer a reduction in both acquisition and operating costs versus conventional mining units of comparable rapacity. Reclamation costs can also be significantly reduced, and the total reclamation process accelerated, making the cross-pit conveyor system attractive to mine Owners and environmentalists alike.

Mining of copper ore and the related industries play an important role in Iran?s economy. Copper ore production in Iran accounts for 75% of the total production in the Middle East. All activities related to copper, that is, exploration, production, refinement etc are owned and managed by state owned companies. Decisions have been made to privatize all these activities. To assess the success of this privatization process, different components of the industry must be subject to economic analysis. In this paper, the cost estimation of all operations has been carried out. The total potential and attainable revenues have also been estimated using historical data available from the industry. Risk is a major factor in all mining activities and the copper industry of Iran has been subject to risk factors arising from many internal and external variables. These variables have been recognized and their effects evaluated. The effect of risk on the economic feasibility of the operations in the industry has also been analyzed.

To George Orwell the year of 1984 was the inspiration for a book. To most New Zealanders it was the year that the fourth Labour Government was elected to power. It was also the year that the review of mining legislation commenced. While Orwell's book and the election of Labour are clearly events of some historic note, one could be excused for classifying the review of minerals legislation somewhat differently in terms of its present achievements! Since the review began it has led a tortuous path through a rapidly evolving policy environment to a point three years hence where no major policies have been determined.

Research on modern hydrothermal systems provides quantitative measures of the processes of formation of hydrothermal fluids and of precipitation mechanisms from them. Studies of ancient deposits provide new information regarding volcanological processes that are related to the deposits, as well as data on their spatial and temporal compositional variations. Mew exploration guidelines result from both aspects of research. The most fundamental requirement for large metalliferous hydrothermal systems is an abundant heat supply for the upper two kilometers of the crust. This heat may come from a focused heal source (shallow-level subvolcanic intrusion), but ambient heat also may have provided enough energy for the reactions necessary to effect leaching of metals, especially where heat flow is particularly high (i.e. very large or high-temperature magmatic source, such as ultramafic environments). For most VMS systems, the majority of the metals were derived through leaching from footwall strata; in addition interstratal fluids may enter subvolcanic intrusions during episodes of magma a chamber "cracking," engendering some '?magmatic" component in the hydrothermal system. Direct contributions of metalliferous magmatic fluid also may be significant from arc-related or back-arc felsic or alkalis systems. These latter contributions may form exceptionally high - grade portions in some deposits. Subvolcanic intrusions, which are excellent indicators of high heat flow and may have been the direct driving mechanisms for some stems undergo two stages of alteration: On intrusion emplacernent. fluids may rapidly enter and react with their mesostatic portions, evident in the sills in the Middle Valley. High temperature interactions caused albitization and destruction of oxides and sulfides, releasing metals. During terminal hydrothermal stages, the metalliferous fluid collapsed into the intrusions, forming disseminated and vein sulfides.

The U.S. coal mining industry consumes a significant amount of energy, primarily diesel fuel and electricity. The continuous global increase in energy demand, high energy prices, and environmental issues related to carbon dioxide emission represent a substantial challenge for the mining industry. This paper presents a result of research work on development of an integrated data environment system for analysis and control of energy consumption in a surface coal mine. A case study on an operating surface coal mine is carried out to demonstrate the practical application of the developed system. The research work presented here may be used by mining professionals to help provide the answers to the crucial questions of when, where, and how much energy is being used. When activated carbon is used for recovering gold in gold industry, carbon fine materials are generated in stripping, acid-washing and kiln regeneration circuits. The carbon fines at the Fort Knox mine, Fairbanks Gold Mining, Inc., contain up to 0.68 kg/t (20 oz/st) of gold. In laboratory tests, gold in the carbon fines was effectively transferred to coarse virgin carbon when the carbon fines were mixed with virgin carbon in cyanide solution at a cyanide concentration higher than 0.10%. A plant-scale test conducted at the Fort Knox mine also shows effective gold transfer from the carbon fines to virgin carbon with a 95% gold recovery in a two-stage gold transfer process.

Due to deposit shape and dimension, narrow vein makes reserve modeling, geological control, stope design, drill and blasting more challenging. It needs high standard quality control as errors can be created easily, which could cause significant amount of ore loss or dilution. From channel sampling, survey control, reserve modeling, drill hole design, blasting, communication with underground drillers to backfill, this paper illustrated every step and its quality control of a long hole stope mining. Compared to other narrow vein mining methods (cut and fill and shrinkage), long hole stoping means higher production, less labor, and significantly lower cost when deposit characteristics allowed.
