This final report documents the work dune by Arthur D. Little, Inc. (ADL) on behalf of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center (PMSRC), on Contract H0122026 (which began in August of 1971). Under this contract ADL provided technical assistance to the Bureau on a task basis on virtually all aspects of the Bureau's programs related to present and planned emergency and operational communications and miner location systems for underground coal mines. The work consisted of independent investigations, analyses, experiments, breadboard and prototype hardware development, workshops and technology transfer seminars on mine communications, and on-going evaluations and guidance related to the Bureau's contracted programs on electromagnetic noise, mine communications systems, and trapped miner location. This final report documents the work in two volumes, Volume I, "Emergency and Operational Mine Communications," and Volume II, "Seismic Detection and Location of Isolated Miners." The Tables of Contents of both Volumes are included in each Volume. Phase I of the contract was devoted to performing an in-depth assessment of electromagnetic noise measurements taken by several contractors and other investigators, and then defining a new noise measurement program and instrumentation system tailored to obtain the necessary but missing noise data. These data are required for use in the design of new emergency and operational communication systems. This work, and the follow-on coordination and guidance activities of ADL on this noise measurement program in subsequent phases of the contract, are treated in Part One of Volume I.

In China, the total reserves of vanadium, reported as V2O5, in stone coal is 118 Mt (130 million st). Recovering vanadium from such a large resource is very important to China?s vanadium industry. The technology now being used to recover vanadium from stone coal has the following two problems in the leaching process: a low recovery of vanadium and high acid consumption. To resolve these problems, a new leaching technology is proposed. The effects of factors such as H2SO4 concentration, liquid-solid ratio, temperature and time, and the types and additions of additives were studied. By adding 1.5% (by weight) CaF2 and leaching the roasted residue of stone coal with 5.4% (by weight) sulfuric acid at 90°C for 12 hours at a liquid-solid ratio of 2 mL/g, the leaching degree of vanadium reached 83.10%. This proposed leaching technology gives a feasible alternative for the processing of roasting residue of stone coal and can be applied in the comprehensive utilization of stone coal ores in China.

This paper presents an initial investigation into the viability of co-kriging the grades of multiple mining cuts in a two dimensional, thin reef scenario. Deposits with gradational mineralized zones, in the perpendicular sense, are not as well served by the use of reef accumulation and thickness as deposits characterized by a sharp distinction between ore and waste rock. South African Bushveld Complex platinum deposits and Witwatersrand gold deposits are examples of this distinction. The calculation of an optimal mining cut is of paramount importance in the mining of Bushveld platinum. Two-dimensional kriging of a constant stoping width mining cut is an effective method for resource calculations once a cut is decided, but this begs the question of how to decide on the cut. Comparison of multiple cuts is used as a way of achieving this decision on many of Anglo Platinum’s operations. Although the kriging of each cut is valid in isolation, occasional negative values occur when incremental grades between overlapping cuts are calculated. Negative incremental grades cannot reflect reality. They are thought to be related to the inability of the method to include the strong continuity in the perpendicular direction demonstrated by the relevant variograms. Co-kriging of related variables has been investigated as a potential means tore impose this inherent order relationship. Various co-kriging options have been investigated. The method has been tested on a real data set from an established platinum operation. One of three types of anomaly has been investigated so far. The results show that co-kriging the mining cut grade as the primary variable, with just one secondary variable, the reef thickness, eliminates most occurrences. Severe anomalies remaining are arguably indicative of population mixing and might be more effectively treated by rezoning the data. Aim—To investigate the viability of co-kriging the grades of multiple mining cuts as a method for resolving anomalies in the estimation of such cuts on Bushveld platinum deposits, with applicability to other thin reef type deposits with a gradational not sharp cut-off between ore and waste in the direction perpendicular to the reef. Ferroalloys are integral part of steel melting process. The purpose of using ferroalloys is three fold e.g. killing of steel, modifying the slag composition and steel alloying. Amount of ferroalloys used for alloying is subject to requirements of steel properties e.g. yield strength, ductility, formability etc. Variety of ferroalloys (some-times pure metal) is used by steel industries depending upon their techno-economic feasibility. Size, chemistry and modes of addition of ferroalloys are suitably engineered to bring in operational consistency and cost benefits. Of late, Tata Steel has tried out a few ferroalloys for the first time with interesting results to meet the specific requirements of high strength interstitial free (IF) and micro-alloyed steels. Some of these ferroalloys have been put into regular use with complete or partial replacement of ferroalloys used earlier. Size of one of the ferroalloys has also been modified without any other adverse effects. This paper summarizes requirements of ferroalloys for the steel industry with special emphasis on recent trials.

The Murray Mine was one of the first mechanized cut-and-fill underground gold operations in northern Nevada. At the end of 2002, mine production began to decline. So the mine entered a phase of remnant mining and began preparations to close down. The remaining mining took place along the ore waste boundary in previously condemned areas and in challenging ground conditions. To remain economically viable, new techniques were implemented in operations, geology, engineering and rock mechanics. These improvements pushed the edge of known and accepted mining practices and have allowed the Murray Mine to remain in operation.

Production of ferro-chromium in the submerged-arc furnace is highly energy-intensive. Several process rates have been attempted to reduce the specific energy consumption in the production of this alloy. An exhaustive understanding of the thermo-chemical features of the production process can be used to reduce the specific power consumption significantly. The knowledge can be used to reduce the energy drain through undesired reactions in the process can be minimised. Plant trials have shown that specific energy consumption up to 100kWh/tonne of hot metal can be obtained by adopting this strategy. The process requires modification in operation practice and does not require any capital investment unlike other processes adopted for reducing power consumption. The principle of thermo-chemistry involved in this process development and results of plant trials are discussed in detail.

Industrial minerals play a central and dual role in the sustainable development (SD) of natural resources. Over the past decade the mining industry has increasingly focused on sustainably extracting and processing industrial minerals. This trend has been driven by higher energy costs, diminishing water resources and sensitivity towards environmental stewardship. Industrial minerals have been used throughout human history as low cost, naturally occurring, materials. Today they are critical components of recycled packaging, energy efficient building materials, light weight paper coatings, and other products critical to the responsible utilization of global resources. As industrial minerals become more widely used in ?green? products, mining companies have established best practices for the sustainable management of industrial minerals mining and processing. These management practices include reducing energy consumption, minimizing water usage, increasing waste recovery through recycling and process optimization, and maximizing the amount of ore extracted per acre of disturbed land. With the commitment to SD principles, quantitative methods for objectively measuring SD performance have become increasingly important. Measuring sustainability impact is a valuable tool for effectively applying SD principles and for making choices that balance sustainable development against other business objectives. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND MINING Sustainable development is a term that has become a common part of our lexicon; however, it has multiple meanings and interpretations leading to a sometimes confusing and contradictory array of definitions. The absence of a single, precise definition reflects the fact that SD is a broad concept or paradigm that offers guiding principles as opposed to a specific set of criteria or regulations enforceable by government or other oversight agencies. While a principle based conceptual approach allows businesses to broadly apply SD practices that are tailored to their specific situation, it has also led the public to sometimes view voluntary corporate SD programs with a degree of skepticism (Walker and Howard 2002). This is particularly true in the mining industry. One reason for this skepticism is that the relationship between SD and mining is misunderstood and to many, sustainably developing non-renewable mineral resources is a contradiction (Rajaram et al. 2005). However, this view takes a very narrow interpretation of the tenets of SD. The second is that mining carries a legacy of poor environmental stewardship that does not accurately reflect current corporate environmental practices Many minerals companies have adopted the Brundtland Comission?s definition of SD (United Nations 1987): ?? development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs?. This definition is very broad and can be interpreted in a number of ways. It provides a general context for sustainable development and is not intended to provide detailed guidelines addressing specific aspects of sustainable development. To fill this gap the following SD principles were drafted by the international minerals community in 2003 (ICMM 2003): 1. Implement and maintain ethical business practices and sound systems of corporate governance. 2. Integrate sustainable development considerations within the corporate decision-making process. 3. Uphold fundamental human rights and respect cultures, customs and values in dealings with employees and others who are affected by our activities. 4. Implement risk management strategies based on valid data and sound science. 5. Seek continual improvement of our health and safety performance. 6. Seek continual improvement of our environmental performance. 7. Contribute to conservation of biodiversity and integrated approaches to land use planning. 8. Facilitate and encourage responsible product design, use, re-use, recycling and disposal of our products. 9. Contribute to the social, economic and institutional development of the communities in which we operate. 10. Implement effective and transparent engagement, communication and independently verified reporting arrangements with our stakeholders. These guidelines insure that SD concepts are applied equally across the industry while setting a clear performance standard and benchmark against which to evaluate success. By adopting these principles and issuing the Milos Statement (http://www.sdimi.org/milos_decl_October%206_2003.pdf), which provides a more detailed vision for integrating SD into everyday business operations, the minerals industry has embraced SD as a core corporate value. The unifying and holistic approach embodied in SD principles impacts the entire mine to market life cycle and addresses the economic, environmental and social consequences of mining. INDUSTRIAL MINERALS The world economy relies heavily on minerals; they are essential to economic prosperity and the quality of life. Industrial minerals are non-metallic, non-fuel minerals that provide the raw materials for a vast range of products used in most every aspect of daily life. They are mined and processed worldwide and they span the spectrum from relatively low value, high volume commodities (e.g. common clay, crushed stone) that are usually mined locally to high value, low volume specialty materials that are sourced from unique one of a kind deposits (e.g. barite, talc, mica). High volume commodity mining operations are often located near the end use market which, in most cases, means areas of high population density where construction and other urban activities drive demand. In these situations the strict adherence to SD principles is particularly critical as these are highly visible operations that must meet the public?s demand for good corporate citizenship. These operations are similar to chemical or other manufacturing facilities that operate near population centers. Two of the largest industries in northern Michigan, pulp and paper manufacturing and iron mining, formed a mutually beneficial partnership and collaborative research program to utilize paper mill residuals for waste rock stockpile reclamation. Historically, the majority of the paper industry’s residuals have been disposed of in landfills. The beneficial use of paper mill residuals for mine reclamation provides an environmentally sound recycling solution for the solids generated at northern Michigan paper mills and eliminates the need to strip additional overburden (glacial till) for final mine reclamation. Residuals offer a cost-effective source of organics and nutrients necessary for successful reclamation and waste rock stockpiles offer an economical and environmentally sound solution for disposal of residuals. The goal is to successfully pioneer technical development of paper mill residuals to accomplish vegetation of steep waste rock stockpile slopes and benches to establish a self-sustaining plant community that meets final reclamation requirements. Of the various types of iron mining wastes, rock stockpiles pose the greatest reclamation challenge. Success depends on incorporating sufficient organic matter into the rock stockpiles to produce a growth medium that can sustain vegetation without the need of overburden. This is an ongoing research program that is evolutionary in nature with numerous field trials, greenhouse studies, data collection and monitoring over multiple growing seasons. The program is a combination of innovative ideas and accepted reclamation practices that is proving to be a beneficial and economic approach to paper mill residual management and mine reclamation that will eventually lead from research to standardized reclamation procedures.

After years of cutbacks, closures and layoffs, the mining industry is beginning to expand again. Metals prices are up and so is investor interest and confidence in the industry. Gold prices began to slowly move up in January2003 and finally cracked the $12.86/g ($400/oz) mark in early December. Silver, too, is up, as is copper. So the mining industry is feeling good about itself again and many companies are expanding existing mines and developing new ones. One side benefit to mining’s improved outlook is that companies are beginning to send more of their employees to industry conferences. Such was the case at the109th Northwest Mining Association meeting in Spokane, WA. The meeting was held in early December and attracted 1,100 attendees and 84 exhibiting companies. That is up from 2002’s attendance of about 900 people and 65 exhibitors. The theme was “A Partnership into the Future.”

Performance-based approach to design of structures including foundations was adopted after enforcement of the revised Building Standard Law in Japan in 2000. The use of piled-raft foundation is favorable for medium-rise buildings in soft ground because of its good performance. In the design of the piled-raft foundation (Architectural Institute of JAPAN2002), vertical load is usually carried by the raft foundation, while the pile is primarily meant to control settlement of the structure. Shaft friction is expected to be larger in a nodular pile(Karkee, et.al., 1998) since it has larger surface area than a straight pile, and such piles are frequently used in piled-raft foundations. Since few structures with piled-raft foundation exist currently, the settlement characteristics of piled-raft foundation have not been fully clarified. To design piled-raft foundations with better confidence, the mechanism of vertical bearing capacity and the spatial distribution of settlement should be clarified, for which the actual behavior of the building-foundation system needs to be evaluated. This paper presents observations of settlement of a building with a piled-raft foundation at a soft ground site. The building is a steel structure covering an area an 766 m2, and consists of two-storey office block and one-storey warehouse block. The filled ground of about 5-m thickness at the ground surface is underlain by approximately 4-m thick alluvial sand layer below which lies about a 17-m thick alluvial clay layer with SPT N-value less than 2. The piles used in the piled-raft foundation are 12-m long nodular piles with nodal diameter of 500 mm (pile shaft diameter is 400 mm). The bored pre-cast piling method (Karkee, et.al., 1998) was used to install the piles. To evaluate the foundation settlement, the method of analysis of three-dimensional frame system, utilized widely in Japan, was adopted in combination with the foundation system. Basic assumptions were: (i) total ground settlement is evaluated as the sum of immediate settlement and consolidation settlement, (ii) immediate settlement is evaluated from the Mindlin?s solution in which strain dependency of shear modulus of soil is considered, (iii) settlement in clayey layers is evaluated by the one-dimensional consolidation theory, and (iv) shear spring between soil and pile shaft is represented by a hyperbolic function. The applicability of the method of analysis was verified by comparison with results of field monitoring of building settlement.

Mining and processing of minerals, metals, and fossil fuels can release selenium and arsenic into wastewaters. Both selenium and arsenic are difficult to remove to levels that meet current drinking water and discharge criteria. These metalloids can be used as electron acceptors by microorganisms transforming them back to reduced states, thus removing or stabilizing them. Bioremediation cost effectiveness will be discussed in terms of site information required, microbial populations, co-contaminants, pH, redox, and nutrients. Full-scale, economical ex situ and in situ biotreatments are possible and can produce 1,000’s of times less sludge than conventional precipitation technologies.

6889. Aslakson, C. I., and Swick, C. H. Gravity Observations in Peru and Colombia. Coast and Geodetic Survey,-Special Pub. 233, U. S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D. C., 1943, 18 pp. (Price, 10 cents.) In accordance with the policy of cooperation among American republics, the-United States Coast and Geodetic Survey in 1941 made gravity surveys in Peru and-Colombia. The information was desirable for determining the figure of the earth for geophysical purposes and for studying the relationship between intensities of gravity and deflections of the vertical. The survey instrument was the Brown pendulum apparatus. 11 gravity stations were established in Peru and 13 in Colombia. The results obtained at these stations are given in a table covering observed gravity, theoretical gravity, and anamalies. - V. S.

Coal, America's most abundant fossil fuel, is expected to play a key role in our pursuit of energy independence. A substantial increase in coal exploitation will be required if we are to fulfill our future energy needs. It is essential that new developments continue if stable coal prices are to be achieved and maintained. The challenge of the mining industry is to continue these developments in the face of problems related to increasing labor costs, inflation and environmental restoration. With expectations of increased activity in surface coal mining, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has authorized this study to determine the preliminary economic and technologic feasibility of underspoil haulage in area strip coal mines and to identify geologic and geographic areas where such a system could be used. These objectives were met by literature search, data-gathering visits to several active area strip mines and by analyzing various haulage systems that were superimposed on three model mines. Potential advantages of such a system include: 1) improved mine design; 2) lower mine operating costs; 3) improved land reclamation; 4) lower manpower requirements; 5) lower mobile equipment requirements; and 6) smaller, less sophisticated maintenance facilities.

Safety remains a critical priority for the Australian mineral resource industry and will receive increased focus in the future. This is particularly evident in underground coal mines where reserves are becoming deeper and more hazardous to extract. The CSIRO, through its Exploration and Mining Division, have recently delivered on two projects aimed at providing step-change capabilities in real-time risk management and hazard control. This paper describes the key outcomes of these projects.

Systems such as Davey Bickford’s Daveytronic® SP blast initiation system and electronic detonators have been an integral part of drill and blast activities in Australia for over a decade, with the significant benefits of electronic blasting well documented. Since 2010 the Multiblast feature has been commercially available, which enables eight individual blast patterns (up to 1500 detonators each) to be blasted in the same firing window. Synchroblast has been in active operation since 2012, which allows a blast of up to 4500 detonators – either as a single blast pattern, or several smaller adjacent blast patterns – to be reliably initiated.Multiblast manages blasts separately but concurrently, allowing all blasts to conduct prefiring checks simultaneously from the firing point utilising only one remote blasting unit. Each blast can be selected and fired individually, in a sequence determined by the operator by scrolling through the colour display. Synchroblast automatically detects the blasting configuration, and manages all detonators as a single blast pattern. This simplifies the design and blasting processes for the mining operation.Multiblast and Synchroblast are routinely employed throughout Australia and globally in both open cut and underground operations, enabling optimal productivity due to increased blast volume and reduced operational downtime associated with blasting events.A number of case studies will be presented in this paper, detailing various mining operations that are consistently blasting in excess of 2500 detonators per blasting event as a part of standard drill and blast operations. "The Porgera orebody is located in mountainous terrain in Enga Province, Papua New Guinea. An underground mine has been developed which produces up to 2000 t/d of ore grading over 2 ozs Au/t. Some 79% of the gold in the ore is free, with the balance in a highly refractory form as sub-microscopic gold evenly disseminated within a pyrite matrix.This paper describes the metallurgical plant that uses flotation and cyanidation circuits to effectively recover the free gold in the ore feed, allowing for wide variation in the gold head grade. The refractory gold component in the ore is stored as leached pyrite flotation concentrate and this concentrate will be later treated by autoclaving techniques to recover the contained gold.The ProiectThe property is located in the Porgera Valley 600 Km North West of Port Moresby. The remote location is 2500 m above sea level. The mine area has 3600 mm of annual rainfall and a temperate climate with temperatures ranging from 10° c to 22° c throughout the year.Alluvial gold was reported in the Porgera area in 1938 and has been an important source of revenue for the area for many years. Intermittent exploration was carried out until the 1960 1 s when Placer (PNG) Pty. Ltd. with Mt. Isa Mines commenced an extensive exploration program. The property was brought to production in 1990 by the Porgera Joint Venture group consisting of Mount Isa Mines Ltd, Rennison Goldfield Consolidated Ltd. and Placer Dome Inc, each with a 30% ownership and the Government of Papua New Guinea with a 10% share. Placer Dome Inc. is the manager of the property with construction under the direction of the Placer Dome Technical Services group."
