The paper presents the development of a spontaneous heating liability index (SHLI) of coal based on a mathematical approach. The parameters for the calculation of this index have been determined by differential scanning calorimetric studies. Thirty-one coal samples representing both fiery and non-fiery coal seams of different ranks have been collected from different Indian coalfields and their SHLI values have been determined. In addition, the susceptibility of these samples to spontaneous combustion has been ascertained by standard crossing-point temperature measurement. The moisture percentage of all the samples has been obtained by proximate analysis. A comparative study between SHLI and crossing-point temperature, along with moisture percentage, indicates that SHLI predicts the proneness of coal to spontaneous heating more accurately.

The consideration of alloying elements for aluminum has led to a series of investigations of the equilibrium relations between aluminum and those alloying elements. Therefore, the aluminum end of the aluminum-antimony diagram has been studied. The general form of the aluminum-antimony equilibrium diagram has been worked out by Campbell and Mathewsi and by Tammann.2 Canlpbell and mathews described principally the beginning of solidification. They found the curve of beginning of solidification rising gradually from the melting point of pure alunlinum to a maximum at about 67 per cent. aluminum. After a slight lowering of the curve at a little greater antimony concentration the curve again rises to a maximum at 18.4 per cent. aluminum, which corresponds to the compound AISb. The curve then drops to the melting point of pure antimony. Tamrriarln explained the maximum occurring at about 67 per cent. aluminum as the result of the slow formation of the single compound AISb. The space lattice of the compound AISb, according to Owen and Preaton,³ is face-centered cubic, the antimony atoms being intermeshed with an identical aluminum lattice. Very little, if any, work has been done on aluminum alloys containing small amounts of antimony. The Present Investigation It has been the purpose of this investigation to determine the solid solubility of antimony in aluminum and also to investigate the eutectic temperature and concentration. The experimental work has been carried out in a manner similar to that described in a previous paper4 from this laboratory.

Tunnel boring machines continue to develop to take on not only larger and larger diameters but also more difficult ground conditions. Ground conditions consisting of unstable faces with water pressures up to 15 bar has required innovative design approaches. A systems approach has been required to produce tunnelling machines that can not only safely excavate the tunnel but do so in an efficient, cost effective manner that stresses production and labor saving approaches. This paper will review the current design developments and present recent projects where these most recent principles have been applied.

Experimental and thermodynamic modelling studies on the structure of alkali borate melts and properties are discussed. A thermodynamic structure model for alkali borate melts is developed to describe the distribution of structural groups in the alkali borate melts as a function of composition. A qualitative interpretation for the boron anomaly in viscosity has been proposed, which regards the boron anomaly as a manifestation of the various antithetical effects caused by the introduction of alkali oxide into boric oxide. It has been found that the viscosity of alkali borate melts increases or decreases according to the changes in rigidity and spatial connectivity of the glass network structure, which is the function of temperature and composition. These concepts with some key examples are discussed in relation to their usefulness and practicality in industrial slags. "The recovery of additions in light metals is an important parameter influencing consistency of the finished product, which ultimately means cost. Recovery is a function of many parameters such as assimilation speed, addition density, addition practice, liquid metal processing conditions, etc. In liquid metal processing operations, it is desirable to have the maximum possible recovery at the shortest possible time.In this paper a new index will be presented, namely, the rate of recovery (RR). This index quantifies the addition recovery and introduces the time dimension in the recovery increase. As such, the RR equips the liquid metal practitioner with an accurate picture of addition assimilation in liquid metals. Results will be presented on how this index is applied to a variety of additions in liquid aluminum. IntroductionThe data on addition assimilation kinetics offer a valuable parameter describing how fast a given addition enters the metal bath. These data may be expressed as gr m-2 s-1 of additive for a set of experimental conditions which might include bath temperature and degree of bath agitation among others. However, the liquid metal processing practitioner is more interested in the recovery of additions. In other words, the point of interest is the percentage of the used addition entering the metal bath. Ideally, the addition recovery can reach the 100% level. However, in practice, the addition recovery never or rarely reaches that level. Many factors can contribute to this. Some of these factors can be slow assimilation kinetics, addition density, addition practice, turbulence of the melt, etc. In some cases, sloppy addition practices can contribute to low recoveries, or even worse, to erratic recoveries.In this paper a new parameter is introduced. This parameter relates the maximum addition recovery observed over the time needed to achieve this maximum recovery."

"Since the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) in mid-2008, capital has been more difficult to access. Mining projects must contend with projects from other industries for scarce capital. A decision to invest available capital in mineral projects requires that valuation be conducted to assess the expected return on the projects. The discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis is generally applied for the valuation of mining projects, whereby future cash flows are discounted to present value using an appropriate discount rate. The discount rate significantly affects the outcome of a valuation. Economic and finance theory provides tools to calculate discount rates. The discount rate must account for factors such as the risk and stage of development of the mineral project; hence the appropriate discount rate to utilize in a project is often a subject of debate.The discount rate is the weighted sum of the cost of debt and equity. There are several methods for determining the cost of equity. This study considers the commonly applied Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and Gordon’s Wealth Growth Model because of their simplicity and availability of parameters required to estimate the cost of equity. This study explores how differences in the cost of equity obtained by these two methods can be explained for a mining environment. Data for empirical analysis were collected from the I-Net Bridge, McGregor BFA, and Bloomberg databases. It was found that Gordon’s Wealth Growth Model provides better estimates of the cost of equity compared to the CAPM under depressed market conditions. Therefore, this research recommends that Gordon’s Wealth Growth Model be used to estimate the discount rates for mining projects during periods of depressed market conditions."

"Oilfield cementing has been utilized in the industry since the turn of the century. Originally, wells were shallow and criteria for well integrity were somewhat limited. Since that time, wells have stretched the envelope in depth, temperature, and pressure. Environmental regulations have also become more stringent, thus, the importance of hydraulic isolation between permeable zones, and between these zones and surface has become more and more important.Initially, oilfield cements were comprised predominantly of construction cement and very limited additives. As time progressed, additives were incorporated to control pumping time or placement time and little effort was placed on optimizing actual components within the cement chemistry. This paper presents issues and concerns created by adding just one new component to the fundamental chemistry of an oilfield cement."

Low-rank coal (LRC) drying processes are generally categorized by operating temperature, drying environment and type of feed (either sized or ground coal). Within these broad categories, drying processes differ according to the type of drying equipment and methods of quenching and stabilizing the dried products. This paper focuses on the produce quality of various LRC drying processes including conventional low and high temperature evaporative drying and non-evaporative, hydrothermal drying. The former may be preferred if the dried product can be utilized immediately, but moisture reabsorption, spontaneous heating and fines production during handling are problems associated with longer term storage, transportation and utilization. Methods for reducing these problems are discussed. Hydrothermal processing is an advanced technology featuring high pressure, non-evaporative drying, which solves stability problems by producing a liquid feel.

This Bureau of Mines report presents the results of tracer gas studies conducted at three facilities where bagger hoods had been installed several years ago to remove airborne silica dust from the vicinity of the bagging operator. The studies indicated that for optimum benefits makeup air must be evenly dispersed, the hood enclosures and duct systems must be as airtight as possible, the average intake air velocity of each hood should be at least 200 fpm, and the hoods and duct systems must be properly maintained.

The abandoned Belle Eldridge Mine near Deadwood, South Dakota, is on land controlled by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) property. The mine produced primarily lead and zinc during the first half of the twentieth century. The BLM has expressed concern about acidic drainage as well as elevated arsenic levels in tailings and waste rock at the site. The mine site was evaluated for remediation in 1998 and 1999. Recent reclamation and remediation work included substantial regrading of waste rock, removal of material where metal loading were of concern, and re-routing of drainage from an adit. Trenching at the site shoed a greater volume than originally calculated during site characterization. Material was removed to a repository that was constructed at a nearby drainage divide. Because of physical hazards, the BLM has decided to remove some historic structures. However, a search of mine records and an inventory of archival materials were complete to preserve the history of the site.

Shott, following which President Shott made his opening address. On motion of H. C. Marchant, duly seconded, voted and carried, the reading of the minutes of the thirty-eighth regular meeting was dispensed with. On motion of Ronald C. Oliver, duly seconded, voted and carried, the President was authorized to appoint auditing, new members, resolutions and nominating committees, which appointments he then announced would be made at the afternoon session. An interesting talkie entitled "Coal Mine Explosions" was shown by Mr. William Forbes for the U. S. Bureau of Mines.

The advent of low-quality export coal demand has brought a new range of possibilities to the South African coal industry. Products that traditionally were only of value to the domestic or combustion industry sectors now have the potential to be exported, with only minor amounts of upgrading required through beneficiation. Comparatively high steam-coal export prices can be obtained for lowquality export coal, which enhances the economic feasibility of expanding low-quality thermal coal exports. There are, however, increasing concerns about the feasibility of lower quality thermal coal exports and the broader implications. These concerns relate to the environmental impact of low-quality thermal coal production for export and the inherent threat to the security of domestic thermal coal supply in South Africa. Against this background, this paper serves to explain the extended value chain in the production of export coal. The technical and economic advantages and disadvantages of low-grade exports versus coal production for domestic use are evaluated. The value chain estimation is calculated by the beneficiation modelling and characterization of two coals. Based on the value estimation, the lowgrade export production scenario, and finally the modelling of potential pollutant distribution, are described. Foskor operates a mine in the Northern Province of the Republic of South Africa exploiting the igneous complex at Phalaborwa. It produces about 3 million tons of phosphate concentrate per year by means of froth flotation from 26million tons of ore of which 16 million is mined and milled onsite. The remaining 10 million tons originate at the Palabora Mining Company and is pumped as a slurry to Foskor. Two types of ore are mined and milled namely Foskorite and Pyroxenite. (The main mineral content of this ore is Apatite, Phlogopite and Diopside.) After three stages of crushing the ore is milled using 24 rod mills and 5 verti mills. The apatite is then recovered using four stages of froth flotation. The stocks of Foskorite ore are rapidly being depleted and the PMC tailings will also fall away by the year 2002 so that the whole mining operation will then be centred around the Pyroxenite ore. This will lead to substantial increases inproduction costs. The recoveries achieved in the flotation plant are largely dependent on the successful operation of the comminution section. Parts of this plant are now 35 years old and the advantages of re-engineering, new technology and automation can only be applied to a limited extent in an effort to reduce costs. It was then decided to investigate alternative milling methods, both wet and dry.

Longwall mining of thin shallow coal seams utilizing open pits is technically feasible. The thinnest coal seam which can be mined using available technology is 34 inches. The capital expenditure for a 1,000,000 ton per year operation is $15,494,000, and the projected rate of return is 5 percent. Similar statistics for a conventional area surface mine are S18,937,000 capital and 14 percent rate of return. The longwall surface mining method disturbs 63 acres of land per 1,000,000 tons, and the conventional area surface mine disturbs 198 acres A significant bibliography of the technology involved is included.

TICOR South Africa is a new titanium feed stock producer. In the Ticor South Africa plant the ilmenite feed to the smelter plant is roasted to enhance its magnetic properties. This allows for the magnetic separation of chromite from the ilmenite. The magnetization reaction relies on partial oxidation with both under- and over-oxidation causing insufficient magnetization. To subject the roaster plant feed material to the required physical conditions a circulating fluid bed (CFB) roaster is used. This paper describes the development of a laboratory model that will aid in the control of the CFB roaster.

The purpose of the work described in this report was to measure the effects of diesel engine emissions on the air quality of work areas in a coal mine. Concentration measurements of a number of diesel related air contaminants were made at the Martin County Coal Corporation Mine in Inez, Kentucky. Compounds measured included carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, nitric oxide, and nitrogen dioxide. In addition, concentrations of the two classes of odorous compound;, aromatic hydrocarbons, and oxygenates were obtained along, with aldehyde concentrations. Surveys were made of the mine by odor analysts to determine the perceived intensity of diesel-produced odors. It was found that the concentrations of the measured species were well below their Threshold Limit Values. Odor intensity levels in the moderate to strong range were observed in the mine.

A mineral survey of a portion of the Lake Eleanor RARE II area (No. 5807), Trinity County, California, was done by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Approximately 8,650 acres (3,500 ha) of the Lake Eleanor RARE II area not examined for this report had been previously investigated by U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey personnel and published as part of USGS Bulletin 1371-B, (Hotz, 1972) Mineral Resources of the Salmon-Trinity Alps Primitive Area, California. The report showed that the section included in the rake Eleanor RARE II area contained no metallic mineral resources. Geochemical sampling indicated that the Lake Eleanor RARE II area contains no potentially important mineral resources. About 4,650 acres (1,880 ha) of the eastern part of Lake Eleanor RARE II area were examined for this report. The Bureau of Mines was responsible for detailed examination and sampling of mines, prospects, and mineralized zones; the Geological Survey conducted geological, geochemical, and geophysical studies of the area. This area is underlain mainly by granitic rock and serpentinite.
