The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is adding a third fan to operate in parallel with, and supplement, its two existing main fans. An engineering analysis conducted in 1995 identified the need for improved system availability and efficiency. The WIPP, located near Carlsbad, New Mexico, is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Carlsbad Area Office facility designed to permanently dispose of U.S. defense-generated transuranic waste in a deep bedded salt deposit. Engineers at the WIPP performed a feasibility analysis for either modifying, supplementing, or replacing its two main mine fans. Since the centrifugal fans were installed in 1988, multiple operational and performance concerns have been identified. A comprehensive engineering study was conducted (McDaniel, et al., 1997) to: identify and quantify operational concerns, evaluate possible alternatives, and recommend an optimum solution. The study indicated that adding a third single-duty centrifugal fan similar to the two existing fans, and equipping that fan with Inlet Van Controls (IVCs) was the best choice. This alternative provided the most desirable combination of operational readiness, and improving system performance. The fan installation project accommodates several operational and scheduling constraints. WIPP is scheduled to receive waste in May 1998. This milestone is proceeded by an operational readiness review. Fan installation could not be allowed to compromise the WIPP's ability to declare facility readiness and had to minimize operational disruptions during the system tie-in. All engineering for the project is completed and physical modifications started in July 1997. The project was completed in 1998.

"INTRODUCTION The technical studies conducted by the Explosives Division of the Bureau of Mines have been summarized in a series of publications issued annually for the past 10 years. 3/ The following account covers studies undertaken from July 1, 1944 to June 30, 1945. The work is set forth under a number of main headings to correspond to the organizational structure of the division, the various activities being under the immediate direction of unit chiefs, who report to the author. Specific credit it due to the unit leader and his assistants.Determination of Ignition TemperaturesThe ignition temperature of mixtures of isobutane and air were determined by the static method using a 131-cc. quartz bull. 5/ The results obtained follow: Prevention of Benzene-Air Explosions by Addition of Nitrogen and Carbon Dioxide The elimination or mitigation of the explosion hazards of combustible gases is a part of the work undertaken by the Bureau of Mines in promoting safety. Explosions can be prevented by the maintenance of concentrations that lie outside the inflammable limits. A procedure has been developed whereby the inflammable limits of many complex gaseous mixtures may be calculated in a rather simple manner without requiring toilsome laboratory experiments. This procedure has been outlined in a number of previous publications. 6./ During the fiscal year under review, essential data required for the calculations of complex combustible gas mixtures containing varying percentages of benzene were obtained. Benzene vapor is a normal constituent of many manufactured gases and is widely used in the solvent industry and in the manufacture of high explosives."

AS a result of drilling operations during 1943, West Texas again added sufficient new oil reserves to replace the oil produced during the year, but failed to maintain its position in currently available reserves because the deeper discoveries will require years for development. Drilling failed to provide the additional oil necessary to meet the increase in current and anticipated market demand. Although 13.3 per cent of the total footage drilled was in wildcat exploration, the ratio of oil discoveries to total wildcats was less in 1943 than in 1942, but comparable to that in 1941. Of the 732 field wells completed, 270 were at Slaughter, 55 at Wasson, 45 at Mascho and 31 at North Cowden. As of Dec. 31, 1943, there were 361 drilling wells including 71 wildcat and 290 field wells; 19.7 per cent were wildcats. It is anticipated that the percentage of wildcats of the total wells will be higher during 1944 than in either 1942 or 1943. Tables 3 and 4 present a three-year comparison of drilling activity and illustrate the downward trend of development that has been in effect during that time. Because of development lag in the deeper Ordovician fields, several years elapse before 2 sufficient number of wells is completed to give a substantial producing rate. As these new oil reserves cost more to find, and will cost more to produce on a barrel basis than the oil marketed during the year, their reserve replacement value to the industry is less in money. Costs While complete costs for deeper drilling are not yet available for analysis, it is evi- dent from the data on drilling rates to comparable depths, contract prices, and general increases in costs, that the cost of drilling has risen approximately 20 per cent during the year. One representative drilling contractor estimates that the average drilling time on a 5000-ft. field well has increased nearly one third and that out-of-pocket costs have increased a dollar per foot. Three major factors contribute to this increased cost: (I) less experienced labor, (2) deterioration in mechanical equipment and expendable material, and (3) increased contract prices. In the past, when there were more drilling rigs than wells to be drilled, some contractors would cut their drilling profit to keep their personnel and rigs working. As this practice is no longer necessary, the contract prices are adjusted upward to assure a profit. On deep and difficult drilling, contracts are let on a cost plus basis. A number of mechanical difficulties have become evident. Inferior quality of steel used in drill pipe and rock bits has added appreciably to drilling time and cost. Contractors are experiencing delay in obtaining repair work and repair parts for prime movers. As the length of drilling time required an shallow-field wells has not increased in proportion to that on deeper wells, it seems that the medium-sized drilling rig is better adapted mechanically than the heavy one to the work imposed. One of the main deficiencies in the heavy rig equipment is inadequate pump capacity. Coastal acid sulfate soils (ASS) are wetland soils and unconsolidated sediments that contain iron sulfides which, when exposed to atmospheric oxygen in the presence of water, form sulfuric acid. ASS form in protected low energy environments such as barrier estuaries and coastal lakes and commonly occur in low lying coastal lands as Holocene marine muds and sands. When disturbed, the iron sulfides in these soils can oxidise and produce large volumes of sulfuric acid (essentially similar chemistry to acid rock drainage with mines) resulting in the subsequent release of toxic levels of iron, aluminium, manganese and possibly heavy metals. This results in detrimental effects on aquatic biota, plants, animals and steel/concrete structures and on human health in the surrounding environment. There are an estimated 2.3 million ha of ASS located along 6500 km of the Queensland coastline. In contrast to many mineral sulfides encountered in the mining industry, the pyrite crystals in ASS can be as small as 2 mm and commonly occur as framboids with extremely large surface area per unit mass, substantially increasing their reactivity if exposed to air (oxidation). Highly reactive iron monosulfides can also occur, particularly in drains and shallow lakes. Many coastal areas, where some 80 per cent of the population of Queensland reside, are coming under pressure for agricultural and urban development. Construction of canal estates, marinas, housing/industrial estates, roads, golf courses, aquaculture ponds, sand/gravel extraction and drainage for sugar cane can disturb ASS and release sulfuric acid, which may then drain into adjacent waterways with heavy rain. As development continues to encroach on coastal lowlands, the identification, quantification and management of ASS must be addressed as part of a commitment to the principles of Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD). ASS can be successfully managed by adopting best practices and following guidelines, but government, community and industry must collaborate to raise awareness, avoid æhot spotsÆ and develop more cost-effective solutions. Scientists led the education and public awareness program showing infrastructure and environmental damages arising from ASS in Queensland. Using results from mapping and research, they convinced policy makers, industry and polititians to accept the need for legislation founded on good science. The resulting æState Planning Policy 2/02: Planning and Managing Development Involving Acid Sulfate SoilsÆ identifies the StateÆs interest in acid sulfate soils. The Queensland Government considers that development involving acid sulfate soils in low-lying coastal areas should be planned and managed to avoid potential adverse effects on the natural and built environment (including infrastructure) and human health. SPP 2/02 states where the policy applies and when a development application will trigger the policy. It can also be used to assist local governments in preparing their planning schemes under the æIntegrated Planning Act 1997Æ. The SPP 2/02 comes with a æState Planning Policy 2/02 GuidelineÆ to provide advice and technical information on interpreting and implementing the SPP 2/02. This guideline has legal status in assisting in the interpretation of SPP 2/02. Those seeking more detailed technical information can now also access the æSoil Management GuidelinesÆ and ASS æSampling GuidelineÆ, available from the Department of Natural Resources and Mines website. This report represents the first comprehensive accounting of lode mining sites in the Sheep Mountain mining district, Custer County, Idaho. Twenty-one mine and prospect locations have been added to the Bureau's Mineral Industry Location Subsystem (MILS) data base as a result of initial phases of a mineral appraisal of the River of No Return Wilderness; previously known locations were checked and the updated information added to the data base. The district's deposits are mainly confined to metasedimentary xenoliths in granodiorite and quartz monzonite. Those deposits in the north and west parts of the district are lead-silver-zinc replacement veins in dominantly calcareous facies; those in the southern part of the district are polymetallic fissure-veins containing pyrite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, galena, and sphalerite hosted by micaceous schist and phyllite. The dominant structural trend in the southern part of the district is northwesterly and on strike with major deposits in the adjacent Seafoam mining district.

Recent accelerated exploration efforts in southwest China have progressively quantified the vast phosphate resources in the Yunnan Province. To date, according to Chinese geologists, potential reserves in the province may be on the order of 4 Gt, which would equal the entire US reserve base. Development of this vast reserve is underway at two sites located 60-70 km southwest of Kunming, the provincial capital of Yunnan. The first, the Kunyang open-pit phosphate mine, produces an estimated 1.5 Mt/a of 22-30% P20,5. The other project located north of Kunyang is the Haikou mine, which the Chinese consider a possible 2.0-Mt/a operation. Because average ore grades run 3% less than those of Kunyang, beneficiation will be necessary. While the latter project has been initiated on a small scale, it is basically still on the drawing board. Brown and Root and the US Bureau of Mines are assisting on the project. Both operations are under the direction a regional administration which reports to the Ministry of Chemical Industries in Beijing. Combined production from both mines could represent some 70% of China's future productive capacity. Ore reserves in the region are estimated at 400 Mt by local officials. Geology of the District The phosphates are considered Cambrian in age and rest on a Precambrian dolomite. The Indian Ocean, Chinese geologists say, may have been the original source. The line of deposition stretches on a trend from Vietnam in the southwest, through Yunnan, into Sichuan Province to the northeast. Because the area is considered very stable from a geologic viewpoint, large quantities of phosphate have been deposited and large outcrops are known to occur everywhere in the province, according to Chinese sources. The Kunyang and Haikou ore bodies are thought to be two wings of an anticline with the former the southern portion, and the latter the northern portion. Each ore body strikes on an east-west axis. While there are many localized phosphate operations throughout the province, the Kunyang mine is the premium producer. Kunyang's Mining Development The Kunyang open-pit mine was opened in 1966. During the early years, operations were considered somewhat disorganized. Systematic mine planning and normal operations were not initiated until just two years ago, according to mine management. In 1979, Kunyang finally reached its design capacity of 1.5 Mt/a. The ore body consists of two phosphate beds separated by a band of shale. The top layer of phosphate varies from 4 to 8 m, averaging 6 m. The middle shale layer is 2 in. The third layer, which is not as rich as the top, is approximately 4 m. Since 2008, the Portuguese Task Group for the Extension of the Continental Shelf has been operating the ROV "Luso" (rated for 6000m depth) for geological sampling of the deep North Atlantic seabed, performing surveys on, e.g., seamounts and hydrothermal vent fields. Amongst other sensors, the ROV is equipped with a full HD video camera with which still images of the deep ocean floor are recorded. Fixed on the ROV’s frame are two underwater "line" lasers, each generating a sharp green line (532nm) over the seabed. The two lasers are paralleled and calibrated at a set distance. Provided that the camera’s angle of view is known, numerical values for seabed surface area may be calculated using direct measurements taken from the pictures containing the laser lines. We present the corresponding main mathematical formulas, which are derived from simple geometrical considerations, and discuss how to generalize these results for an arbitrary camera tilt or pan. We present an example of application of our method by estimating values for percent coverage of rock substrate versus sediment. Our results are also relevant for determining seabed polymetallic nodule abundances from still images obtained during ROV surveys.

The geology of the Muskeg River Oil Sands Mine is described to demonstrate how geologic modeling aided in resource evaluation and material characterization during the feasibility and construction stages. Bitumen is hosted in the clastic sediments of the Cretaceous McMurray Formation which is informally divided into members representing the fluvial, estuarine and marine environments of this transgressive sequence. Lithofacies mapping of drill core provides further detail to classify materials as resource type, for extraction suitability and for construction suitability. Geologic interpretation provides tools for the engineers to produce effective mine plans and for the operators to execute them during mine development.

In Ferro Alloys manufacturing organization where there is huge input of raw material in terms of ore, reductants and variety of fluxes amounting to about four times of the mass of alloy produced need to be handled from yard to furnaces , internal logistics requires utmost attention. Any deviation or mismatch between stock and requirement will affect furnace operation. Though the activities are being outsourced by most of the organization, these require close monitoring. This communication presents an optimization model which can work as a ready reference for the manager to decide upon the material quantity and the furnace to be fed with an objective of minimizing the cost of handling and zero production loss.

"The initial development of the massive potash deposits of the prairie evaporite formation took place over a decade ending in 1970. The potash mining and refining facility near Rocanvi11e, Saskatchewan was the 1ast of ten mines to come into production during that era. This operation, known as Sylvite of Canada Ltd., was designed to produce 1. 2 million short tons per year of KCl product in granular, coarse, standard and special standard grades.In 1977 the parent company, Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting, sold the Sylvite property to the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan. Shortly thereafter PCS slated its new Rocanville Division for a two phase program of expansion. The first phase, completed in the spring of 1979, was relatively small, involving mill debottlenecking and additional equipment in the compaction circuit and the product and ore storage areas. The second phase was a major undertaking which included additional mining equipment and a new 300 STPH milling circuit. This work was completed during the fall of 1981 and has increased the Rocanville Division's nameplate capacity to two million STPY.Thickening equipment operating in the Saskatchewan potash industry is generally situated within the main refinery building or a separate insulated and heated structure due to the harsh winter climate and the need to closely control plant brine temperatures to ensure good flotation circuit performance. Since these thickeners process large volumes of slurries, conventional basin type designs tend to be large, ranging up to 150 feet in diameter or more. As part of the general effort to minimize capital costs, the potash industry has begun investigating the use of alternate high capacity, compact thickener designs. In this regard, PCS Rocanville undertook a program in 1978 to evaluate a Lamella™ Thickener and one other type of 'High Rate' thickener* as alternatives to a conventional design for the phase two expansion project."

Germany's' wartime coal-tar industry had two main branches, which can best be considered individually because their raw materials, operations, and distributions were almost completely separated. One branch, old and well-established, was concerned almost entirely with processing coal tar produced by the high-temperature carbonization of caking bituminous coal. Carbonization was effected principally in byproduct- coke ovens and to less extent in vertical, horizontal, and inclined retorts. The high-temperature tar was all processed in tar-distilling plants that handled high-temperature tar almost exclusively.

The Mining Association of Canada launched the Towards Sustainable Mining initiative in 2004. TSM’s goal is to improve the mining industry’s performance by aligning its actions with the priorities and values of Canadians. The initiative currently includes performance indicators for four areas: tailings management, energy use and greenhouse gas management, external outreach and corporate crisis management planning. Over the past year, the association has been designing a performance assessment and verification system for these performance areas, as its members prepare to move to external verification of their performance in 2006. The presentation will describe the initiative and its evolution, as well as the challenges faced in developing a verification system applicable to an entire sector.

During the last decade, advances were made in solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) technologies. Combined with heap leaching, these technologies made it viable to exploit large, low-grade oxide copper deposits. The El Abra Mine is a good example for such a deposit. The deposit is situated in northern Chile at an elevation of about 4,000 m (14,000ft), 70 km (45 miles) north of Calama. Codelco sold 51% of the El Abra to Cyprus Minerals in June 1994, with Codelco retaining the balance. In 1993, Cyprus and the engineer on the project began discussions withinternational companies regarding the materials-handling system requiredfor the project. These early discussions were considered critical for this fast-track project.

Eutectic freeze crystallization (EFC) is a novel technique for the recovery of pure salt and pure water from hypersaline waste brines. It is therefore a promising technology for the treatment of industrial waste waters. The impurities caused by crystallizing salt out of multi-component brines by EFC have not yet been investigated, however. To these ends, the selenium impurity found in sodium sulphate, produced from the waste brine of a platinum operation, was investigated. It was believed that the similarity between sulphate and selenate ions allowed isomorphous substitution of selenate ions into the sodium sulphate crystals, which was the likely cause of impurity uptake. It was found that the presence of sodium chloride in the industrial brine promotes the uptake of selenium, while ionic strength of the brine and mass deposition rate of sodium sulphate did not have a significant effect on the selenium uptake. Isomorphous substitution is predicted to be the most significant mechanism by which all impurities will be taken up when applying EFC to other industrial waste brines.
