To be able to continuously monitor the noise to which underground workers are exposed as a better way to help prevent hearing damage. The Approach: The Bureau of Mines has developed a Time-Resolved Audio Dosimeter which can be worn by miners to record noise level every 30 seconds and store It in a miniature solid state memory. Figure 1 is a photo of the dosimeter. [ ] How It Works: Acoustical noise is picked up by a micro-phone and fed to a sound level meter which produces a d-c voltage proportional to the A-weighted sound pressure level. (As specified by federal regulations, the A-weighted sound pres-sure level approximates the response of the ear by discounting the higher and lower frequency components of the noise.) This d-c voltage controls an oscillator which, together with related circuitry, produces a pulse train having a frequency that's proportional to the noise level.

The Waihi Region is host to many low sulphidation epithermal Au-Ag deposits. The Golden Cross mine located at the head of the Waitekauri River, eight kilometres NW of Waihi, was a gold mining operation that placed significant emphasis on environmental management. An assessment of the influence of this mining project on stream sediment geochemistry (Fe, Mn, As, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd, Ni, Ag and Se) in the Waitekauri Catchment has been made. Effective waste management during the mine operation appears to have prevented contamination of stream sediment. Trace metal concentrations in the Waitekauri Catchment sediment have generally decreased since 1987, and are currently mainly below the ANZECC (2000) sediment quality guidelines. However, elevated As levels were recorded in the Upper Waitekauri River and Battery Stream, exceeding guideline values. Elevated levels of Cu, Pb, Zn and Cd were found in the Huanui Stream, a tributary of the lower Waitekauri River. This reflects the influence of past mining operations in the valley, as well as natural weathering of hydrothermally altered Coromandel Group andesite. At a number of sites, Mn concentrations also exceeded sediment quality guidelines, and this may be derived from the remediated Golden Cross mine site.

Historically, coal miners have known that roof shales can deteriorate in contact with humid mine air, causing massive roof falls and injuries from falling rock. It is critical to recognize rocks prone to weathering and to adequately support these rocks in order to ensure the long-term stability of the openings. In a recent study, NIOSH has used a wet/dry cycling test to determine the moisture sensitivity of over 800 specimens of roof rock from 25 U.S. coal mines. Fireclays and some gray shales are the most moisture-sensitive. Rocks with disturbed bedding, in contrast to flat-bedded rocks, are also more sensitive to water. Black shales are relatively un-reactive to moisture and serve to protect more reactive gray shales above. Mines that have roof rocks with moisture-sensitivity indexes above 40% can experience slaking roof conditions, and many require high coverage surface controls. Three case studies are presented in which the moisture-sensitivity index is correlated to roof conditions underground, and can be used to indicate long term deterioration. Engineering measures are described to control moisture-sensitive roof. In one case, roof screen not only reduces injuries from rock fall but also is shown to reduce roof falls. After carrying out a brief review of the existing safety assessment criteria for the spontaneous detonation of explosives in the mining of sulphide ore deposits in China, and giving a detailed description of the dynamic process and mechanism of the spontaneous detonation of explosives and the relative factors, the latest research results of three kinds of explosives reacting with a group of sulphide ores are presented, based on a reliable experimental method. Afterwards, a complete safety criterion for spontaneous detonation assessment, which depends on the hole temperature, the water solution Fe2+ and Fe3+ and the pH value, is established to determine (he safe charging time of explosives in variable conditions. The criterion is verified as correct by a large-scale field test.

This paper analyzes the opinion in Bragg v. Robertson, 72 F.Supp. 2d 642 (S.D. W.Va. 1999), a case which threatens the future of surface mining in West Virginia and which will almost certainly result in new policies or rules that will affect surface mining everywhere. This paper addresses: (1) the jurisdictional bases of the action which relies on the federal surface mining laws to enforce a state mining program; (2) settlement agreements reached in the case that threaten to alter federal policies beyond West Virginia borders; (3) a programmatic environmental impact statement on mountaintop mining being undertaken by the federal government; and (4) an opinion by the Court outlawing excess spoil disposal in intermittent and perennial streams.

Mining is a complex and intensive industry. Extracting raw material with different shapes, sizes, chemistry from the earth?s crust and transform them into a standardized and high quality final product is a big processing challenge - which involves energy and control on large scales. Not only is the physical work challenging, the mining industry today is facing unprecedented challenges: Decline of mineral grade and reserves, cost escalation for new developments and modernization, regulations, safety, lack of skilled people, and market uncertainty are the new constant. It is clear that process control and management of electrical power will be of increasing importance to the recovery rates the mine will achieve. The objective of this paper is to provide a quick vision about future trends and evolutions in technology related to these fields and their impact on Electrical Safety and Control of the mineral recovery. The paper will cover trends in safety, energy management and efficiency, communications of data, control room evolutions, plant integration, other control technologies, and we will examine how these technologies provide information and the benefits of aligned reporting systems to address current industry challenges. More than just the trends or breakthrough concepts, current technologies are available today that can be applied in the mineral recovery operations now to help overcome anticipated future challenges will be presented later in this document. Finally, a brief discussion to look at some real tools to help make real time changes to the process while maximizing recovery and optimizing cost.

Occupational exposure to hand-arm vibration through the use of powered hand tools can result in reductions in tactile sensitivity, grip strength and manual dexterity. In fact, even acute exposures to vibration cause shifts in vibrotactile thresholds in exposed fingers (2,4,5). Although reductions in tactile sensitivity after acute vibration exposures are transient, cellular changes associated with this shift in sensitivity could lead to the more permanent reductions in tactile sensitivity that are a common symptom of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). Methods Animals. Male Sprague Dawley rats (6 weeks of age) were used for all experiments. Animals were housed in AAALAC accredited facilities, and all procedures were approved by the NIOSH Animal Care and Use Committee and were in compliance with the CDC guideline for care and use of laboratory animals. Vibration exposures were performed by restraining rats in a Broome-style restrainer, and securing their tails to the vibration platform using 6 mm wide straps that were placed over the tail every 3 cm. Restraint control animals were treated in an identical manner except that the tail platform was set on isolation blocks instead of a shaker. Tail temperature and current perception thresholds (CPTs). Rats were exposed to 4 h of tail vibration (125 Hz, 49 m/s2), or restraint. Tail temperature was collected prior to and immediately following the exposure using an infra-red camera. Sensory neuron function was assessed by measuring CPTs with a Neurometer (Neurotron, Baltimore, MD). Transcutaneous nerve stimulation was applied to the C10 region of the tail. Three frequencies were used to test specific fiber types (5 Hz – C, 250 Hz - Ad, and 2000 Hz – Aß). The intensity of the stimulus was automatically increased in small increments until the rat flicked its tail. Tests at each frequency were repeated until the animals displayed 2 responses that were within 2 CPT (or 0.02 mA) of each other (2-4 tests/animal). CPT tests were performed prior to the exposure, immediately following the exposure, and 24 h after the exposure. Data Analyses. Temperatures were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA with animal as a random variable. ANCOVAS were used to analyze the CPTs at each frequency. Temperature at the time of the CPT test was used as a covariate, and animal was used as a random variable Results Tail temperatures declined between pre and post exposure (F(1,25) = 62.85, p < 0.001; mean ± sem pre 25.96°C ± 0.42, post 20.71°C ± 0.77), but were back to baseline levels by 24 h after the exposure in both groups of rats. The ANCOVAs demonstrated that exposure to a single bout of vibration did not alter sensitivity of C (5Hz) or Ad (250 Hz) fibers to stimulation.

This demand for services became evident in Australia earlier than many other markets and has since spread globally. This growth has created significant issues for the strategic direction and planning by the service provider. Such strategic questions include:- how fast to grow, how to recruit, train and integrate new staff, what market sectors to service, the selection of targeted customer sectors and managing strategic growth with short term demands and commercial reality. These factors are discussed using in depth experiences and examples that illustrate these strategic approaches. The relevance of this new industry environment to New Zealand services will be highly discussed.

The Old Hickory mineral sands ore body in Virginia (>2000 ha) currently supports a productive rowcrop agriculture. Reclamation experiments were implemented on pilot-scale mining pits from 1995 to 1998. Half of each mining pit was topsoiled (25 cm) while the remaining half was left as either (1) mixed tails/slimes or (2) re-graded subsoil over tails/slimes treated with 112 Mg/ha yardwaste compost. Post-mining productivity was estimated to be reduced by 23%, 3%, 27%, and 20% for each crop (wheat/soybeans/corn/ cotton) in sequence when compared to undisturbed soils. In ilmenite smelting, the FeO content of the feed material (nominally FeO.TiO2) is decreased by reduction with carbon. In a parallel reaction, a significant amount of the TiO2is reduced to Ti2O3.One of the striking features of these reactions is a consistent relationship between the extents of FeO and TiO2reduction; this relationship is independent of furnace size. It was recently proposed that this relationship follows from the solidification behaviour of the slag, where the final slag composition corresponds to the minimum melting point (?eutectic groove?) in the FeO-TiO2-Ti2O3phase system; the hypothesis is that solidification equilibrium with the freeze lining stabilizes the slag composition. If this is the case, the system of slag and freeze lining must be capable of correcting two types of disturbances: thermal and compositional. Thermal disturbances result from incorrect power input, for the feed rates of ilmenite and reductant. For example, excessive power input will tend to overheat the slag, causing the freeze lining to melt partially, establishing a new steady-state heat loss from the furnace. Compositional disturbances result from an incorrect reductant input for the given power and ilmenite input. In this work, the dynamic response of the slag and freeze lining to different inputs (flow rates of ilmenite and reductant, and power input) is modelled. The model is based on solidification equilibria, and quantified heat loss through the freeze lining. The conclusion is that the solidification equilibrium cannot constrain the composition to the eutectic groove for typical operating conditions. The dramatic increase in molybdenum prices from the low of less than $2.50/lb in 1999 to more than $40/lb in 2005 has caught the attention of molybdenum mine owners and exploration project developers. Between 2005 and early 2007, prices pulled back and stabilized within a trading range of $25/lb to $30/lb. This 1,000 percent price increase has motivated most existing producers to expand production and is motivating those with molybdenum prospects to accelerate the development process for earliest possible production. It is still unknown how much new production will come from existing mines, how much production will be needed from new mines if demand continues to grow and how many potential new mines might be available to meet future demand. And of course, the billion dollar question is whether molybdenum prices will remain high, or will they fall back to the low levels seen during the 1980s and 1990s? This article attempts to answer these questions in a way that will help molybdenum project developers and financiers plan for the future.

Many advances have been made concerning the automation of heavy equipment teleoperators such as those found in mining. Complete automation, however, is not achieved yet and the operation of these vehicles still relies on the presence of a human operator. Fortunately, a lot of research has been done in order to improve the performance of these human-machine systems. This paper presents the characteristics of different control modes and input devices used for the control interface of those telemanipulators. We describe the benefits and drawbacks of each particular control interface on the overall system performance, based on a review of research in the field. We conclude with some recommendations and a discussion of future research needs, given the new potential advances offered by virtual environment technology and embedded computing.

Several articles have recently been published discussing the conditions necessary for accurate measurements of temperatures in the open-hearth steel furnace. In the course of a study of refractories service conditions in steel furnaces, the present writers have taken temperatures in several open-hearth shops in the Pittsburgh district. The conclusions, as to conditions necessary for accurate measurements of temperature, are somewhat at variance with those of other investigators. The subject is closely connected both with the close control of steel-making and the prevention of overheating of the silica refractories used in roofs and walls. It is becoming more and more important to obtain furnace temperatures of fairly definitely known accuracy. At present, the most useful instrument for such measurements is the disappearing-filament type of optical pyrometer. This method of measurement has formed the basis of most other discussions on the subject and was also used by the writers. Previous Investigations In 1916, Burgess&apos; made perhaps the first systematic series of measurements in steel furnaces. The emissivity figures of 0.40 for liquid steel and of 0.53 to 0.65 for liquid slags had been determined by the Bureau of Standards and were used by Burgess in this work. These correction factors are still being used and are regarded as fairly accurate, so that the tapping and teeming temperatures on metal streams given by Burgess should be very nearly correct. Most of his temperatures of furnace roofs and slag surfaces were taken while flames were present in the furnaces and include a few roof temperatures above 1700&apos; C. (3100&apos; F.).

Heavy minerals have been mined from the sands of the United States’ Atlantic Coastal Plain since the early part of the twentieth century. Production of ilmenite from beach sands near Mineral City (Ponte Vedra), Florida, began in 1916. The first reported large-scale recovery of zircon in Florida was reported from this deposit in 1922 and of rutile in 1925. These operations ceased in 1929. Today the Ponte Vedra Country Club and Golf Course is situated in the center of the former mining site. In 1942 heavy-mineral operations were established on 202 hectares of land situated in Duval County, Florida. The location is about 16 kilometers east of the center of Jacksonville, Florida, in an area known as Arlington. This operation demonstrated that low-grade sand containing only 2 to 3 percent titanium minerals could be concentrated economically with the Humphreys spiral and that the oxides could be separated from the heavy silicates by electrostatic methods. Much of this area is now covered by a large mall and is a major retail- commercial center. Between 1958 and 1964 the Skinner tract, a deposit about 4 kilometers south of the above deposit, was mined. Today the area of this deposit is known as Deerwood, a gated country club community on the southside of Jacksonville. Further inland, E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Co. has been mining heavy minerals from a physiographic feature known as Trail Ridge since 1948, and a deposit near Green Cove Springs, Florida has been in production since 1972. Since the start of heavy-mineral mining in the southeastern United States, nine heavy-mineral ore bodies either have been or are being exploited in Florida and Georgia. Other deposits either have been lost to mining or are yet to be mined. These deposits have different origins. Some formed along shorelines at the heights of marine transgressions while others formed on regressional beach ridge plains during periods of temporary stillstands or slight transgressions. These different origins are reflected in the chemical and physical characteristics of the deposits. Ilmenite in older, more western deposits has a higher TiO2 content than ilmenite in younger, more eastern deposits. TiO2 content does not very with north-south direction. Garnet and epidote are absent or rare in the older Trail Ridge deposits, but progressively become common in the younger Duval Upland, Crestal Pamlico, and Holocene deposits. Grain size is coarsest for Trail Ridge sediments and finest for sediments in Duval Upland and Crestal Pamlico deposits. The average grain size for Holocene deposits is intermediate between Trail Ridge and Duval Upland deposits. The two models for the origin of the heavy-mineral deposits – deposits formed at the height of major marine transgression; and deposits formed during periods of temporary stillstands or slight transgressions that occur during a general marine regression; - are consistent with known sedimentological data and depositional trends.

In 2005, Black & Veatch Corporation began designing a raw water conveyance system for San Luis Obispo County from Lake Nacimiento to the city of San Luis Obispo. The first element of the water transfer system will be a raw water pump station and lake tap. The wet well of the pump station will consist of a concrete lined shaft approximately 180 feet deep constructed in the very incompetent sandstone of the Vacqueros Formation. The lake will be wet tapped at approximately 172 feet below grade using a slurry earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine. The 48 to 72-inch finished diameter microtunnel will be approximately 500 feet in length. Construction is scheduled to begin in the winter of 2007.

Nowadays more infrastructure tunnel projects are procured using design-build method. In this environment, the Owner’s engineer would typically provide performance requirements for the design-builder, and the Contractor’s designer would work with the contractor to design the tunnel lining based on the Contractor’s means and methods and manufacturing process. This paper will describe the typical requirements provided by the Owner based on its design objectives, and the means and methods by the Contractor that would significantly impact the design. Project examples and recommendations for Owner’s requirements will be provided that can optimize the design and still achieve the Owner’s performance objectives.

This paper explores the possibility of using short-term time-dependent plate loading tests to estimate the elastic and viscoelastic parameters of the weak floor strata typically associated with coal seams in Illinois. Plate loading tests with incremental loads, similar to incremental creep experiments, were conducted until the floor failure occurred. For each increment, the load was held constant for a period ranging from 1-4 hours until a constant deformation rate was achieved. The deformation-time data were analyzed for viscoelastic parameters of weak floor strata assuming its behavior to be adequately represented by the standard Burgers model. The analysis required development of mathematical equations for the time-dependent deformation of the standard Burgers material under a three- dimensional state of stress. Time-dependent pillar settlement data at one mine were also analyzed for elastic and viscoelastic parameters of the weak floor strata using the developed equations. These parameters were compared with similar parameters estimated from plate loading tests.

The Condrey Mountain RARE II area lies mostly within the Elliot Creek mining district, a significant producer of gold from placers, and gold, Silver, copper, and minor soapstone from lode deposits. No mineral production has occurred within the study area; no resources are known in the area. However, significant resources in lode and placer deposits are just outside the west and northwest boundary of the area. The Blue Ledge Mine (fig. 1, no. 15) adjacent to the western boundary, is reported to contain 226,000 ton; (205,000 t) of identified resources averaging 0.05 oz gold per ton (1.7 g/t), 2.16 oz silver per ton (/4.0 g/t), 3.5 percent copper, and 3.95 percent zinc. The mine has produced 11,131 tons (10,114 t) of ore that yielded 1,026 oz (31,908 g) of gold, 58,431 oz (1.8 million g) of silver, and 2.7 million lb (1.2 million kg) of copper. Exploration is currently underway at `he mine and vicinity, including part of the study area.
