A 55' deep excavation encompassing almost a city block in London, Ontario required a lateral earth retention system to provide both temporary excavation support and a permanent groundwater cut-off wall for a proposed office complex. The system selected was an interlocking Drilled Shaft wall with 3-4 levels of tiebacks. The specifications required the system to be designed for movements or settlements around the excavation of ¼" max. Design to be by the Contractor with design parameters and a comprehensive soils report provided. An extensive system of instrumentation in the form of inclinometers and survey targets were used to monitor vertical and horizontal movements of the shoring system and adjacent properties. Introduction The project, One London Place, is a two phase office tower development in downtown London, Ontario. Phase one consists of a 24 storey office tower on the northwest part of the site, with five levels of below ground parking over the entire site "Figure 1". A second office tower will be constructed at a future date.

Limestone-based material shows great promise for removal of arsenic from water. In laboratory tests, it has removed more than 95% or arsenic and more than 99% of cadmium and lead. In addition, the waste material appears to be suitable for recycling or disposal in an ordinary landfill. However, the efficiency of limestone for arsenic removal could be improved. Recent research has shown that iron treatment of limestone can enhance its arsenic-removal efficiency greatly, increasing its attractiveness as an alternative to other methods.

Corrosion is a major operational problem in amine-treating plants causing significant expenditures each year, Corrosion may become more severe when the amine plants contain process contaminants ? namely heat-stable salts. The heat-stable salts enter the plants with feed-gas streams and makeup-solution, and/or are produced within the plants by reactions of alkanolamine and available carboxylic-acid anions, This work investigated interaction corrosion effects that may exist in amine-treating plants containing a mixture of heat-stable salts, The investigation was experimentally carried out in a 5 kmol/m3 monoethanolamine (MEA) solution containing 0,20 mol/mol carbon dioxide (CO2) loading at 80°C under atmospheric pressure using carbon steel 1018, Six heat-stable salts, including formate, oxalate, bicine, acetate, thiosulfate and chloride, were tested with a series of salt combinations, Potentiodynamic Polarization, Tafel Extrapolation, and Cyclic Polarization were used for revealing corrosion behavior, determining corrosion rate, and examining the pitting tendency, respectively, Results show that thiosulfate induces the most corrosive environment when present either individually or in the form of salt mixtures.

Diffusion phenomena in mine airways are important to trace gas and dust introduced into mine ventilation flows. Authors have carried out tracer gas measurements to check mine ventilation using concentration-time curves measured in mine airways, however dispersion mechanism to enhance effective diffusion have not been cleared. A numerical model using discrete tracer points dosed into tube flow has been presented to simulate their movements in consideration of turbulent velocity profile and fluctuation. Numerical simulations have been carried out to predict distributions of dosed points in tube flows with turbulent velocity profile, turbulent intensity profile and Reynolds stress. The numerical simulation results show that a combination of turbulent velocity profile and fluctuation creates extremely large dispersion of points in longitudinal direction and concentration curve with long tail was observed. This dispersion by velocity profile and fluctuation contributes large effective diffusion coefficient compared with original diffusion coefficient dominating in uniform velocity fields. Furthermore, the effect of Reynolds stress on the concentration-time curves is discussed.

In the Ngakuru area zeolite deposits occur in late Quaternary lacustrine vitric tuffs of the Ngakuru Formation and two of the deposits are being mined. The Ngakuru Formation overlies the Ohakuri Ignimbrite dated at c. 240 ka, and is overlain by younger alluvial sands and gravels. Individual zeolite deposits contain 50 - 80 per cent zeolite over a thickness of up to 45 m in thinly stratified vitric tuffs and are localised along NE-trending normal faults. Glass shards in the tuffs are replaced by the silica-rich zeolites mordenite and clinoptilolite. Amorphous silica (opal A), opal-CT, Kfeldspar and smectite are also present. The zeolites and other minerals are very fine grained (<10 8m), with open meshes of crystals that result in high porosities (52 - 70 per cent) in mordenite-rich tuffs. Zeolitic tuff samples typically have cation exchange capacities of 80 to 110 meq/100 g and internal surface areas of 25 - 58 m2/g, which combine to give high liquid and odour absorption capacities. The first zeolite deposit (Mangatete) was found in 1992, and this and the Twist Road deposit are worked by quarry benching into the side of hills. The zeolitic tuffs are dried and crushed to produce a variety of products including adsorbents for soaking up oil/chemical spills and animal wastes, animal feed supplements, water treatment, and sports turf and slow release fertiliser. The Ngakuru zeolite deposits formed at shallow depth (<100 m) along fault zones from reaction of glass-rich tuff beds with groundwater-diluted geothermal water during the late Quaternary, and are as young as 8500 yr BP from 14C dating of plant material in sinter associated with the Mangatete deposit.

An extensive design phase testing program in which 10 piles and 2 drilled shafts were instrumented and statically load tested to failure, was undertaken to establish relevant foundation design parameters for two bridges in Charleston, South Carolina, USA. The bearing strata at both test sites was a calcareous, overconsolidated, firm to very stiff, slightly sandy, clayey silt (locally known as Cooper Marl). Confirmation dynamic and static loading tests on production piles indicated only 50 to 60% of anticipated pile capacities; including consideration of time effects. Supplemental subsurface explorations did not reveal any significant variations in marl properties. Ultimately, 22 static and 75 dynamic tests were performed on production piles for a 2 mile section of the project. Pore water pressures in the marl were also monitored during and after pile driving. A study of unit skin friction in the marl as a function of time revealed two distinct trends: piles driven in areas with a sand overlaying the marl gained more capacity significantly faster than those driven through a clay or silt. Although the insitu marl properties are apparently similar across the site, the material immediately above the marl evidently has a large effect on pile capacity. This effect of overburden on pile capacity was verified by testing piles over a period of two years.

Hand scaling is a physically demanding job and is responsible for numerous overexertion injuries in mining. This experiment studied rib scaling from an elevated bucket to examine force generation capabilities and electromyographic responses to a prying subtask. Subjects exerted force using two bars (steel and fiberglass) at five target heights. Work height significantly affected peak prying force during scaling activities with highest force capacity at the lowest level (p = 0.0188). Bar type did not affect force generation (p = 0.7843): However, use of the fiberglass bar required significantly more muscle activity to achieve the same force (p < 0.05). It was concluded that miners should scale points on the rock face that are below their knees, and reposition the bucket as often as necessary to do so. Additional research is needed to fully understand the impact of bar type on the physical demands of an entire scaling task.

How does SME-AIME cope with profound changes in technology, markets - and most importantly - in employment patterns facing its membership today? This is the question that prompted the Society&apos;s Board of Directors to appoint a Long-Range Planning Commission (LRPC) (see ME, Feb. 1984, pp. 118 and 128). This is also the question addressed most particularly by the LRPC&apos;s Scope Committee. The Committee started its deliberations by asking such basic questions as "Who are we?" and "What is our business?" The Scope Committee then reviewed the findings and recommendations of other more specialized committees to develop and integrate their concepts of the Society&apos;s business for the next 10 years. The policy-making suggestions of the LRPC were reviewed and acted upon by the Board of Directors at its open meeting in Los Angeles on Feb. 26, 1984. At the Oct. 23-26, 1984 SME Fall Meeting in Denver, the Board will again review LRPC recommendations. In answer to the question "Who are we?" the Scope Committee proposed description, which was accepted by vote of the board of directors: . . A technical and professional organization that consists of individual members, namely those mining engineers, metallurgists, geologists, earth scientists, economists, managers, educators, and other professionals concerned with all facets of exploration, production, distribution, and using of mineral commodities. "These mineral commodities include all metals; industrial minerals, including construction materials and fertilizers; coal, oil shales, tar sands, and other mined fuels. Among the earth&apos;s mineral resources, only wellpumped oil and gas lie outside the Society&apos;s specific purview. "Traditionally, SME members work in the fields of engineering, technology, exploration and discovery, development, construction, mining, quarrying, beneficiation and processing, handling and transport, equipment manufacturing, sales and marketing, data processing, safety, land reclamation, environmental protection, taxation, administration, and management of these elements. "Members practice their professions in industry, in universities and research institutions, and in government. They may be operators, manufacturers, sales persons, contractors, consultants, analysts, researchers, educators, advisors, regulators, or members of supporting staffs. "The members of the Society are leaders in dedication to their crafts, in innovation, and in the pursuit of excellence. Among their numbers they count the most distinguished of engineers, applied scientists, and managers. "The Society is based in the United States, is active on a worldwide basis, and is open to nationals of any country. Certain qualifications must be met for attaining and maintaining membership." Purpose of the Society As to the question "What is our business?" the Scope Committee restated our purpose in light of current practice and the constitution of AIME and the bylaws of AIME and SME. The Board of Directors accepted the following proposed purpose of SME: "To further the professional development and well-being of its members by publishing and distributing technical writings, news, and information; by sponsoring meetings of members; by providing forums for discussions and for continuing education; and by fostering communication on the subjects within its purview. Each potential oil sands developer deals with the question of optional sources of raw water to supply large water demands that range from 50 to 80 million cubic metres per year for each of six existing and planned developments. The Athabasca River currently supplies nearly all of the water to the existing mines via conventional bank intakes, which has resulted in some concern over the effects of reduced river flows. This paper describes the various water supply options, and the likely scenario for future oil sands water supply projects. Various water supply options have been suggested including Athabasca River water via infiltration galleries, groundwater, combined Athabasca River water and alluvial groundwater using wells (i.e. bank filtration systems), diversion of tributary rivers, utilization of large lakes in the region and pumping from other large rivers in the region. Investigations show that the size of river catchment needed to support raw water usage by a typical oil sands mines exceeds 5,000 km2 eliminating all tributary rivers that are located in the oil sands region except those rivers with large drainage areas like Firebag and MacKay Rivers. Lakes cannot be used as a source of supply due to large water deficits for smaller lakes and the large cost of sourcing water from a lake as large as Lake Athabasca. A groundwater source alone would not likely meet the large water demands. River intakes on the Athabasca River will likely continue to be the most practical water supply option for oil sands mines north of Fort McMurray, although various types of Athabasca River intakes are possible. Existing intake systems include screened riverbank intakes, forebay intakes, and river bottom intakes. Infiltration galleries are not feasible for most sites, though some bank-filtration-type systems using high capacity wells may be an option if there is sufficient thickness of high-permeability alluvium at a suitable location in the Athabasca River valley.

Increased TBM performance is leading the way for resurgence in tunneling activity in NYC. Tunnels will be excavated in the same geologic formations as previously excavated D&B tunnels whose construction records are providing valuable insight into the prediction of rock mass behavior. This report compares an eight mile stretch of NYC Water Tunnel #2 with the recently excavated eleven mile stretch of the TBM driven Water Tunnel #3. Comparisons of the type and amount of rock support installed as well as water inflows and grout quantities are made. Rock mass characteristics specific to TBM performance are also evaluated.

Detailed characteristics of gold from Pliocene auriferous quartz gravels from Waimumu (Southland) have been studied using a combination of optical microscopy, energy dispersive microprobe analysis and scanning electron microscopy techniques. The gold at Waimumu is classified as either: 1. detrital gold, or 2. irregular gold. A number of different morphologies a recognisable within each &apos;gold type&apos;. Evidence is given for an predominently authigenic origin for some of the gold at Waimumu.

COALTECH 2020 initiated a research project to provide the coal mining industry with a modelling tool to determine the expected types of subsidence, risks and the investment required in post-closure funds to cater for subsidence associated with bord and pillar mines. A detailed literature review was conducted to determine the most important parameters in calculating the cost associated with surface subsidence. A subsidence prediction model was developed to determine the likelihood of different types of subsidence. The study made use of current knowledge of failure mechanisms and its aim is to assist the industry and government in arriving at the most suitable arrangements when authorities require financial instruments to assure compliance with environmental regulations.

Mechanical rock drilling is about 150 years old, and the fundamental principles of augering, penetration and dragging, pressure and rotation, and percussion have not appreciably changed. Surface mining blasthole drilling employs relatively shallow blastholes (to about 100 to 130 feet or 30 to 40 meters) with respect to the blasthole diameter and hole alignment while problematical is not a major universal problem. Modem underground mining methods are spacing development levels up to 400 feet (130 meters) apart, to take advantage of high powered mechanical drilling methods, requiring very long blastholes compared with surface mining. Blasthole alignment is a major problem in underground mining and this paper will address the aspects of percussion bit design which impact on hole alignment and drilling and blasting costs, i.e. bit geometry, cuttings removal, penetration-retraction.

In this research, dynamic and static load tests were performed on permanent foundation piles which had a pile length of 30 m, 800 mm in outer diameter and 15 mm in wall thickness. In this site the dynamic horizontal load test on a smaller test pile, 12 m in length, 500 mm in outer diameter and 12 mm in wall thickness, was also carried out. The static horizontal load versus horizontal displacement derived from the dynamic load test conformed well to that measured in the conventional static horizontal load test of the pile with 800 mm diameter. Then an attempt was made to predict the horizontal load displacement of the pile with 800 mm diameter based on the results of the dynamic horizontal load test of the pile with smaller diameter of 500 mm.

The gold salting fraud at Busang on the island of Kalimantan, Indonesia was exposed in early 1997 and resulted from the independent drilling, sampling and assaying of PT Freeport Indonesia which reported assays from the South East Zone with negligible concentrations of gold. Since then, a number of legal actions directed at former Bre-X directors, consulting firms and financial or broking institutions are at various stages and are based on numerous allegations surrounding the supposed existence of obvious and numerous warning signs or æred flagsÆ. These include: the absence of references to visible gold in the drill logs; the alluvial nature of the gold grains; the high gravity recoveries; the invalid comparison with Kelian; the absence of outside scrutiny and the lack of external review/audit and surface depletion of gold. The focus on the red flags has been at the expense of the numerous positive indications or ægreen flagsÆ. These include the morphology and chemistry of the gold grains, the gravity testwork, the amalgamation results, the role of external consultants, the results of a review by one of North AmericaÆs leading minerals auditing groups, the behaviour of the gold at surface and the presence of references to visible gold in the drill logs. The flawed nature of the discussion of the technical facts surrounding Busang has prevented a meaningful and informed discussion about what actually happened and has, therefore, prevented the formulation of meaningful remedies for the future.

Wet desulfurization of Pittsburgh No. 8 coal and Illinois No. 6 coal were conducted with sodium hypochlorite in the laboratory. Pittsburgh No. 8 coal was leached by hypochlorite at high pHs in one step only. The hypochlorite concentration varied from 0.2 to 0.6 molar; sodium hydroxide concentration, from 0.2 to 0.8 molar; and temperature was at the levels of 80 and 90°C. The desulfurization of Illinois No. 6 coal was conducted in three consecutive steps of pretreatment in concentrated ammonia at room temperature, leaching with hypochlorite at room temperature and hydrolysis in sodium hydroxide solution at 90°C. In the leaching step, hypochlorite concentration varied from 0.2 to 0.8 molar. The desulfurization method of Pittsburgh No. 8 coal was found to reduce mainly pyritic sulfur. More than 70% of pyritic sulfur removal was achieved at the optimum conditions of 0.4 molar hypochlorite, 0.4 molar sodium hydroxide and 90°C. The desulfurization method for Illinois No. 6 coal was capable of reducing significant amounts of organic sulfur. The removal of organic sulfur achieved a 37.8% reduction at the optimum operation of leaching at 0.4 molar hypochlorite and room temperature followed by hydrolysis at 0.3 molar sodium hydroxide and 90°C. The chlorine content in the coal produced by the chlorination during leaching was kept below the threshold value of 0.3% at the optimum conditions of the desulfurization method for each coal.

"This article deals with the excavation of a tunnel below the town of Isola LIRI, nearFrosinone, in central Italy. The tunnel was driven into a conglomerate formation, of lacustrine_fluvial origins, consisting in carbonate clasts with a sandy_silty matrix and calcitic cement. ""Drilling andblasting"" had to be adopted in place of a tunnel boring machine which had showeduneconomical performances. Good advance speed rates were achieved notwithstanding thepresence of some above structures to safeguard. The nearest structure (an old votivechapel) was less than 10 meters (33 ft.) far from the tunnel crown; the nearest residentialstructure was at about 15 m (49 ft.)."

Conventional methods for selecting a production plan for an open pit mine is based on the assumption that ore grades throughout mine life as well as market variables are known with certainty. Another important issue that is also being ignored in the conventional procedure is the value of management flexibility to revise operating policy with time according to the arrival of new information. Based on this oversimplification of reality, an optimum mine plan that is thought to be maximizing net present value (NPV) of the project is selected. Given the multiple sources of risk affecting the estimated NPV, there is a high probability that the actual value will be different from that estimated. This could mislead decision making process regarding selecting an optimum mine plan. This paper proposes a multi-criteria ranking system for selection between alternative mine designs under both geological and market uncertainties. The system is based on integrating multiple market and geological uncertainties as well as the operating flexibility to revise the ultimate pit limits using a Monte Carlo-based real options valuation (ROV) model. To compare the methods, the article applies the proposed system, along with the conventional NPV-based method, to rank possible mine designs for a copper and a gold mine. It has been found that, considering multiple risk analysis measures while integrating uncertainty and operating flexibility results in selecting a mine design that is different from that selected by the conventional method.
