"Industrias Peñoles, S.A. de C.V. – Mining Division, has initiated in the last ten years, six Mining Operations (Bismark, Tizapa, Ciénega, La Herradura, Rey de Plata, and Francisco I. Madero) and it has expanded several of their existing Operations (Sabinas, Fresnillo, Tizapa, Ciénega) one or more times.This work aims to share the experiences learned on this growing process. Some of these lessons are: 1) Project leaders must have a leadership that fosters good communication and team work; and this leadership style must come from top management. 2) A good communication must exist between the personnel from Engineering, Construction, and Operation. Also, this good communication must come from top management. 3) Starting the project with a solid Engineering Study. 4) Do not misunderstand cost with cost/benefit; always look at the cost/benefit. 5) Selecting good Contractors and good Suppliers. 6) Good training before the project commissioning is essential to reduce the learning curve period, this is even more important in areas where local people do not have any background in mining activities. 7) Recognizing that any project has a learning curve and it must be reflected on the production budget. 8) Avoid an over optimistic Mine preparation time schedule.BACKGROUNDIndustrias Peñoles S.A. de C.V.The mission of Industrias Peñoles, S.A. de C.V. 9K medium was used to isolate iron-oxidizing bacteria from 27 sump water samples collected from Dexing Cop-per Mine, Chengmen Mountain Mine and Yin Mountain Mine, Jiangxi Province, China. Lead acetate and silver nitrate were used to enrich metal-resistant iron-oxidizing bacteria from the above water samples. Isolate 16 was isolated from the sample taken at Dexing Copper Mine. Growth experiments indicated that when incubated under lead acetate (3,500 mg/L), isolate 16 still carried out ferrous ion oxidation, while isolate H1, a less resistant strain taken at Yin Mountain Mine, had a tolerance level of only 400 mg/L. When assayed with other metals, i.e., Ag+ (240 mg/L), Hg2+ (0.9 mg/L), Cu2+ (32,000 mg/L) and Mg2+ (22,500 mg/L), isolate 16 still carried out ferrous ion oxidation while, on the other hand, isolate H1 exhibited much lower tolerance levels, i.e., Ag+ (60 mg/L), Hg2+ (0.1 mg/L), Cu2+ (19,000 mg/L) and Mg2+ (13,500 mg/L). Based on 16S rDNA sequence data, isolate 16 and H1 were both identified as Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans.

The influence of different grinding methods on the shape characteristics of magnetite particles was investigated. Also, the effect of particle shape on the flotation of the magnetite, both alone and in the presence of quartz particles, was investigated. The shape characteristics of the magnetite particles were measured and calculated from images obtained by scanning electron microscopy via an image analysis system. The flotation tests were performed using a laboratory flotation cell. Results showed that in the -250+212 µm and -106+75 µm size fractions, ball mill products have a higher elongation value than rod mill products, while in the -150+125 µm size fraction, rod mill products have a higher elongation value. Particles with higher elongation values and lower roundness values have a higher flotation kinetic constant. Furthermore, the influence of magnetite particle shape on flotation is greater, and the flotation kinetic constant is higher, in the presence of quartz particles than in the flotation of magnetite alone Keywords shape, elongation value, flotation kinetics, magnetite.

"The Harricana-Turgeon belt (HTB) is a poorly known volcano sedimentary belt in the NW part of the Abitibi Sub-province; it includes the Matagami, Joutel, Brouillan and Casa-Berardi mining districts. The HTB is dominated by volcanic rocks, which covers 65% of its surface area, followed by sedimentary (18%) and plutonic (17%) rocks. It is also transected by numerous deformation zones located either at the contacts of volcano-sedimentary units and granitoid bodies or cross-cutting them. A preliminary geological synthesis shows that mineral deposits are associated with certain regional geologic elements.The volcano-sedimentary units are grouped here into twelve band-shaped lithotectonic domains, most of which extend for more than 150 km E-Win the HTB. Each domain is defined by lithologies and facies associations, and gradiometric and electromagnetic signatures.Eight domains are composed of basaltic or basaltic to komatiitic associations, interlayered with thin pelagic sediments, representing sub-marine lava plains. Two domains are composed of basaltic to rhyolitic associations that are interpreted as volcanic arcs formed by one or several central volcanic complexes.The sedimentary rocks are grouped into two lithotectonic domains. Each is composed of rhythmic sequences of turbiditic sandstone- siltstone-shale, Algoma-type banded iron formations and conglomerates bearing plutonic and volcanic pebbles. These three facies come partly from mass flow at the bottom of a slope in a moderately deep marine environment. In each domain, a conglomerate sandstone- siltstone sequence, containing poly genetic pebbles of local provenance, is similar to Timiskaming-type alluvial deposits.The nineteen granitoids, found within the HTB and at its border, belong to numerous petrographic suites, and have been grouped into four structural families: pre-tectonic, pre- to early-tectonic, syn- to late-tectonic, and late- to post- tectonic. The pre- to early-tectonic plutons are presumed to be sub-volcanic and are generaly associated with the volcanism of central complexes.The HTB mineral resources consist essentially of polymetallic (Cu-Zn-Ag-Au) and gold (Au-Ag) deposits. The polymetallic deposits are located exclusively in the two lithotectonic domains composed of basaltic to rhyolitic associations (Matagami-Brouillan and Joutel Raymond). All gold deposits are associated with deformation zones superimposed on lithotectonic domain contacts and highlighted by graphitic units. Controlling noise has proven difficult in mining, and noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) remains common. In 2008, a South African Mine Health and Safety Council study focused on small- to medium-sized mines in relation to the milestones set by the industry to prevent NIHL. An evaluation of the compliance of ten diamond, sand, aggregate and Ready mix concrete mines and production sites with standards, legislation and best practice guidelines relating to NIHL prevention was conducted, using a noise compliance audit tool. The findings indicated that all mines surveyed had poor compliance with the international standards, compliance with International Standards Organization standards being the poorest. There was a clear distinction between the small and the medium-sized mines in their compliance with local standards and legislation (ranging from 14 per cent to 66 per cent). The areas of best compliance were audiology and medical examinations. The lower-than-expected compliance was largely attributable to shortcomings in hearing conservation programmes for occupational noise. Initiation of remedial practices in the small- to medium-scale mining sector to facilitate improvements in NIHL prevention and compliance with standards and legislation is recommended. In Bureau of Mines research on recycling chrome-containing refractory wastes, used refractories from argon-oxygen decarburization and electric steelmaking furnaces were beneficiated. By means of dry magnetic separation on minus 6-mesh crushed wastes, a concentrate was produced. After minor adjustments to the particle size distribution, full-size refractory brick were dry-pressed by a commercial producer and fired to 1,450° and 1,730° C. Standard testing procedures were used to determine the cold-crushing strength, modulus of rupture at 25°, 1,300°, and 1,500° C, hot load, thermal shock resistance, thermal expansion, and slag resistance. Optical and electron microscopy were used to determine grain-bonding mechanisms, and energy-dispersive analysis of X-rays was used to determine elemental distribution. The test results indicate that the beneficiated material could be used to produce a refractory product suitable for moderate-temperature applications.

There are currently two operators producing oil from the surface-mineable portions of AlbertaÆs oil sands (Syncrude Canada Ltd and Suncor Inc) and two other companies are proposing to enter the industry (Albian Sands Energy Inc in 2002 and True North Energy LP in 2004). Tailings from the two current oil sands plants contain approximately 220 000 tonnes per year of TiO2 and approximately 80 000 tonnes per year of zircon. This represents approximately six per cent of the worldÆs TiO2 consumption and approximately nine per cent of the worldÆs zircon production. With the commissioning of plants by Albian and True North, and the announced expansion of plants by Syncrude and Suncor, it is expected that these tonnages could quadruple in the next ten years. All of these operators have at least 50 years of reserves even at these expanded production rates. The occurrence of heavy minerals in AlbertaÆs oil sands has long been known and is well documented in the literature. There have been a number of attempts to produce market-grade products from this resource and the results of this work have been quite mixed. Typically, researchers have used the normal mineral dressing techniques of the industry and have found the mineral assemblage does not respond to these techniques all that well. This has led to the widely-held suspicion that there must be some difficult metallurgical problems associated with this resource. There are three main problem areas that have created difficulties for previous researchers:the bitumen coating on the sand grains; secondary mineralisation such as pyrite, siderite and calcite; and a high proportion of aluminosilicates (approximately 25 per cent) that have the same gravity, electrostatic and magnetic properties as other minerals in the heavy mineral suite. Recent work by Lakefield Research shows that these problems can be largely overcome with some novel approaches. The bitumen can be removed by washing with a solvent in the presence of a demulsifier; the pyrite can be removed by flotation; and the titanium and zircon minerals can be separated by selective flotation followed by conventional electrostatic and magnetic separation.

This paper describes developments in ferro-nickel furnace technology, specifically improvements to cooling methods, furnace controls, and high voltage furnace operating regime. The evolution of these technologies is briefly presented, as context for describing the current state of the art that has enabled ferro-nickel furnace operation at over 75 MW and specific energy consumption of less than 400 kWh/t dry ore. Examples from existing operations are used to illustrate present best practices, and potential future trends are discussed. The paper begins with an overview of the fundamental aspects of pyrometallurgical treatment of lateritic ores that drive ferro-nickel furnace design. Furnace wall cooling methods are related to the requirements resulting from specific furnace process conditions, including slag and metal compositions, as well as arc and bath power. The benefits of high productivity and low specific energy consumption resulting from high voltage (shielded-arc) operating practice are discussed, along with the furnace controls and electrical power train that enable such operation even with captive power generation.

Por ello, se planteó la modificación del diseño Final del Tajo Chaquicocha, ya que la continuidad de estos malos resultados arriesgaba el minado de los Bancos inferiores. En ese sentido, el objetivo del presente texto estriba en lograr voladuras masivas, sin afectar la estabilidad de las paredes del Tajo Chaquicocha, así como tener beneficios económicos en la reducción de tiempo de minado por cada banco, y en la productividad (Dig Rate) de los equipos de carguío.

A series of seven underground-coal-mine fire experiments was conducted in the Safety Re-search Coal Mine at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. Coal and styrene-butadiene-rubber conveyor belting were burned upwind of two sensor stations, 18 m and 148 m from the fire source. Exhaust from a diesel locomotive flowed over the fire sources in six of the tests. Metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS), CO, and optical-path-smoke sensors were positioned at both stations and found to be an optimum set of sensors for the fire discriminations. A representative set of 7,679 samples of CO data and data from the smoke and diesel-exhaust MOS sensors were used as inputs to train a neural network (NN). By testing 42,538 data samples from the seven experiments, all fires were detected by the NN within 9.67 min from the onset of significant changes in the MOS voltages without any false alarms.

An environmental monitoring program was established to assess the baseline of parameters which may be impacted by a research and development hydraulic borehole mining operation. During the baseline program, two aquifers were identified at the borehole site with the overlying sand aquifer being distinct from the ore sand aquifer on the basis of radiological parameters. The direction of flow of groundwater was determined to be north 19° west at a rate of 1.82 feet per year. Tests to determine the effect of backfilling the boreholes indicated that using overburden from the open pit mining operation would not significantly increase the radiological consti¬tuents of the ore sand aquifer. Mining measurements of the- radon flux from the borehole indicated that the actual release rate of 0.035 pCi/sec was several orders of magnitude less than the calculated estimate by the Environmental Protection Agency. Finally, a gamma survey conducted at the site indicated that the terrestrial component of background radiation was consistent with that in areas near uranium deposits. The methodology used as well as the supporting data are given in this report.

Bioleaching of nickel laterite ores is based on the use of heterotrophic fungi organisms and their metabolites (organic acids) to dissolve nickel and cobalt from oxide minerals to form metal-organic complexes. Metal recovery from this process using an aminophosphonic acid based chelating resin (Purolite S950) was investigated as a function of metal concentrations, complexing agent including citric, dL-malic and lactic acids. Batch adsorptions were conducted using synthetic leachate solutions of nickel and cobalt with concentrations from 15 to 2000 mg/L prepared in 0.01 and 0.1 M organic acids. Adsorption equilibrium data were interpreted using the Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Kagner-Radushkevich (DKR) models. The results showed that equilibrium adsorption data for nickel-organic complexes followed the Freundlich model and those for cobalt agreed with the Langmuir model. It was observed that the maximum adsorption capacities of nickel and cobalt were 3.26 and 10.48 mg/g resins respectively. These were achieved in metal complexes prepared from 0.01 M lactic acid. Metal elution was conducted using 2 M nitric acid. High metal recoveries were achieved from low metal concentrations but were found to decrease with increasing metal concentration. The results suggest that effective recovery of nickel and cobalt from low concentration of metals, such as those generated from bioleaching operations, can be achieved suitably using chelating resins.

Currently, the Bear Canyon Mine is facing the challenge of excessively high coal and rock temperatures in one of its headings. In Mine No.3, the air temperature at the 6th Right panel reached 36.4ºC and the coal 83.9 ºC. Due to these severe work conditions, the mining plan has been altered by changing the mine direction to avoid the high temperatures. To investigate the problem, drill holes were developed from the entries and the rock temperatures monitored using K-type thermocouples. The measurements confirmed the existence of localized “hot spots” in the mine. This paper presents a summary of ventilation surveys that were conducted in this mine. It includes the results of coal and rock temperature measurements from drill holes, interpretation of results using a heat flow simulator and the identification of hot spot areas. It also includes a summary of methods that were developed to reduce the hazard and control the problem.

"The Rabbit Lake Operation is located in Northern Saskatchewan on the western shore of Wollaston Lake approximately 800 km north of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.The Operation is owned by a joint venture of Cameco Corporation and Uranerz Exploration and Mining Limited. Cameco is the operator.The Mill started production in June 1975 under the ownership of Gulf Minerals Canada Limited and over the past twenty years has increased the rated production capacity to over twice the original design.The Mill was originally designed to process 485,000 tonnes per year of ore with an annual production of 2.0 million kg of U308 (yellowcake). During the past ten years changes in ore sources and process modifications have led to increased milling capacity and production targets. The Mill has treated a total of 8.6 million tonnes of ore and produced over 40 million kg of U308 in the twenty year period, despite the shutdown and cutbacks in operating time since 1989.The 1995 tonnage throughput was 206,000 tonnes per year. Annual production though has risen to 3.6 million kg of yellowcake despite the departure from full-time to half-time operation in 1991 (7 up-7 down). The forecast for the coming years will see tonnage rising from 300,000 to 570,000 tonnes, production of 4.5 to 5.4 million kg of yellowcake and an anticipated return in the year 1998 to full time operation.This paper will give a brief history of the Mill and focus on the present flowsheet and recent improvements to the process."

As a growing mining company, ERAMET is looking for new positions on the strategic metals market. In this context, the Gabonese Maboumine pyrochlore deposit is currently being studied for the recovery of niobium, tantalum, rare earth elements (REE), and uranium. This ore shows mineralogical and chemical characteristics that make it challenging to process by already known practices, from both technical and economic points of view. In this context, ERAMET has developed since 2008 an innovative hydrometallurgical process which has been successfully operated at a pilot plant scale. While the upstream part of the process aims to dissolve the valuable elements in sulphuric acid, the downstream part of the process aims to recover them separately in a marketable form. The focus here will be on the recovery of the REE. The ore deposit contains approximately 1.4% of REE including 87% of light REE and 13% of medium-heavy REE. The challenge in this process lies in the fact that the major elements in the matrix are iron and aluminum. An innovative process has been developed in order to recover all of the REE in these unfavourable conditions, described in this paper.

CSIRO has been experimenting with supersonic flows as a method of rapidly quenching metallic vapours. Cooling rates above 106 °C/s have been achieved. The supersonic flow conditions are achieved by adiabatic expansion of the vapour through a Laval nozzle into a vacuum chamber. This paper will describe the basic physics of the process, outlining computer fluid dynamic (CFD) modelling of flow in the nozzle, the effects of different flow conditions on the condensation process and discuss the practical design issues associated with operating supersonic nozzles. Results obtained from a CFD model of the nozzle, which compared two methods of incorporating condensation, showed that inclusion of condensation substantially changes the conditions in the nozzle. Most noticeably, the effect of condensation produces a region in the nozzle where the temperature remains almost constant.

(New York Meeting, February, 1313.) I. INTRODUCTION. IN the metallurgical treatment of most metallic sulphides it is usually necessary to carry on a roasting-operation. In some cases the raw ore will have to be roasted.; in others the intermediary product, matte, produced in smelting the ore; again, both ore and matte may have to be subjected to oxidation at elevated temperatures. Most metallic sulphides, when given an oxidizing-roast, pass through the state of sulphate before they are converted into oxides. All metallic sulphates are completely decomposed by heat, with the exception of those of lead and bismuth, but the temperatures at which decompositions take place vary with the metals. Some metallic sulphates are converted directly into oxides, others first form basic salts. Alkali-earth sulphates show a behavior similar to that of metallic sulphates, while alkali sulphates do not part with their sulphur trioxide even at elevated roasting-temperatures. The older data on the decomposition of metallic sulphates by beat are only approximations. Thus Kerl 1 gives the order in which metallic sulphates are decomposed with increasing temperatures as (Ag2, Fe, Cu, Zn, Ni, CO, Mn, Pb) SO4. More recent statements give definite temperatures and modify the formerly accepted order of decomposition. But the temperatures given by various observers do not agree. The reasons for this are to be found mainly in the method and manner of carrying out experiments. Four methods have been used: 1.
