Objective: Workers with hearing loss face special problems, especially when working in noise. How­ever, conventional hearing conservation practices do not distinguish between workers with normal hearing versus impaired hearing. This study col­lected information from workers with self-reported noise exposure and hearing loss, supervisors of such workers, and hearing conservation program managers through focus groups and in-depth inter­views to evaluate their perspectives on the impact of hearing loss on safety and job performance, the use of hearing protection, and information needed to appropriately manage hearing-impaired workers who work in noisy environments. Results: Concerns about working in noise with a hearing loss could be grouped into the following 10 categories: impact on job performance, impact on job safety, impaired ability to hear warning signals, impaired ability to monitor equipment, interfer­ence with communication, stress and/or fatigue, impaired communication caused by hearing protec­tor use, reduced ability to monitor the environment as the result of hearing protector use, concerns about future quality of life, and concerns about future employability. Mostly, there was an agree­ment between the perceptions of workers, supervi­sors, and hearing conservation program managers regarding difficulties associated with hearing loss and consequent needs. These findings suggest that noise-exposed workers with hearing loss face many of the same problems reported in the literature by noise-exposed workers with normal hearing, with additional concerns primarily about job safety as the result of a reduced ability to hear environmental sounds, warning signals, and so forth. Conclusions: The study outlines potential chal­lenges regarding job safety and hearing conserva­tion practices for noise-exposed, hearing-impaired workers. Awareness of these issues is a necessary first step toward providing appropriate protective measures for noise-exposed, hearing-impaired workers. Of the 19 million adults in the United States with some degree of hearing trouble, nearly half are currently employed in the workforce (NCHS, 1994). More than 30 million US workers are exposed to hazardous noise levels, and noise-induced hearing loss is the most common occupational disease in the United States (NIOSH, 1996). Many workers incur their hearing losses during the first 5 to 10 yrs of employment (Rosler, 1994; Ward et al., 2000) and subsequently work the rest of their careers in an environment where noise and hearing loss interact to impair their ability to hear communication and other important signals. Workers with hearing loss who are exposed to hazardous noise levels present a dilemma to hearing loss preventionists. On the one hand, it is of great importance to ensure that their residual hearing is protected from the damaging effects of the noise to which they are exposed. On the other hand, how­ever, traditional hearing protectors serve to further “deafen” such workers, making communication more difficult and impairing the detection of environmen­tal sounds and warning signals. These workers have special needs that must be addressed. However, conventional hearing conservation practices do not distinguish between workers with normal versus impaired hearing; and, to date, no governmental or professional organization has developed specific guidelines or policies concerning the accommodation of noise-exposed, hearing-impaired workers. Some research regarding noise-exposed, hearing-impaired workers has been completed. These studies have primarily focused on three areas: (a) speech intelligibility in noise versus quiet, with and without various types of hearing protection devices (Abel et al., 1982; Abel et al., 1993; Abel & Spencer, 1997; Rink, 1979; Suter, 1989); (b) signal detection and localization under similar conditions (Abel et al., 1993; Abel et al., 1985; Abel & Hay, 1996); and (c) the use of hearing aids as hearing protectors (Berger, 1986; Dolan & Maurer, 1996; Hétu et al., 1992; Hétu et al., 1993). Research in these three areas has provided an initial framework for development of a management para­digm for these workers. Mintek has developed the EnviroplasTM process for the treatment of solid wastes from the metallurgical industry, especially steel plant dusts, without requiring agglomeration to produce inert slag and at the same time recover metal values such as nickel, chromium and zinc. The products that are generated in the plasma-arc process are usually a metal and a non-toxic slag, which are tapped from the furnace in liquid form. The metal is mainly composed of chromium, nickel and manganese. During the production of stainless steel between 30 and 70 kg of dust and fine waste is generated per ton of steel. Mintek has successfully processed around 1000t of AOD/EAF dust on a toll treatment basis in order to recover the contained Cr and Ni. The metal produced contained 18.5 per cent Cr, and 5.5 per cent Ni. All slag samples tested conformed to US EPA regulations for disposal. The chromium and nickel recovery to metal was 90 and 98 per cent respectively, on a once through basis i.e. no baghouse dust recycle. Slag tapping temperatures varied between 1650°C and 1750°C. The average actual energy requirement excluding furnace heatlosses of smelting steel plant dust with anthracite as reductant was 1.36MWh/ ton of dust. The total mass of feed reporting to the off-gas stream was 10 per cent. The average ZnO content of the fume was 35.5 per cent.

The aim of the present work is to investigate the effects of shooting multiple explosive charges, in the same borehole, on the amplitude and frequency content of the generated seismic wave. The work also investigates the effect of the coupling medium used in the borehole on the quality of the generated seismic wave. The delay period between the shots is on the order of months and up to a year. The investigation utilizes a numerical modeling approach which is capable of modeling the detonation of explosives as well as shock and stress wave propagation in solids.

"According to Darcy’s equation, the rate of dewatering varies as inverse square of the surface area of the particles to be dewatered and is proportional to the pressure drop across a filter cake. Thus, the difficulty in dewatering fine mineral concentrates can be overcome by using high-pressure filters. When treating ultrafine particles, however, it is often necessary to further dewater the filter cake using a thermal dryer. In the present work, novel dewatering aids that can reduce the pressure requirement have been developed. The reagents are designed to reduce surface tension, increase particle hydrophobicity and increase capillary radius, all at the same time. They were tested for dewatering mineral and coal concentrates in both laboratory and pilot-scale tests. The results show that the use of the novel dewatering aids can substantially reduce cake moistures and, at the same time, increase throughput. In this communication, the case history of using the reagents commercially at the Garpenberg concentrator is given. The use of the novel dewatering aids allowed the operators to use a vacuum filter to obtain desired cake moistures and obviate the need to use a thermal dryer.INTRODUCTIONDewatering is an integral part of mineral and coal processing operations, as it is necessary to remove water from concentrates (or clean coal) to minimize shipping costs, meet contract specifications, and recycle the process water. Keywords: Multipass grinding, Residual stress, Retained austenite, X-ray diffraction The study investigated residual stresses behaviors and their superposition effect in D2 dies for thread-rolling applications. A nested factorial experiment was applied to test hypotheses that the residual stresses profiles change due to combination of heat treatment and multipass grinding operations, and that certain patterns can be derived due to the memory relationship between pre-existing and final residual stresses distributions. The amount of the retained austenite along with residual stresses in variation with depth was measured using x-ray diffraction technique. Statistical analyses indicate that the proposed hypotheses hold. Residual stresses distributions as well as tensile peak location were found to be significantly influenced by the treatment parameters used. Unique characteristic patterns in the residual stresses profiles were observed due to multipass grinding technique across all experimental conditions. This finding suggested a plausible memory relationship between the cutting passes, and the causes of the foregoing results are further proposed and discussed.

THE use of small substations for the supplying of 275-volt energy to the locomotive and cutting machines in coal mines is a well-established practice. A few years ago, when labor costs were lower, these substations were located as near to the load as possible, and an operator was provided for each station. This practice has now become so expensive that substations are being located with reference to other mining machinery, such as hoists or pumps, so that one operator can look after both. Some-times the substation is operated by one whose duties make him traverse quite a large area. In such cases the interruption of alternating-current supply may produce a long interruption in the direct current, as the station cannot resume service until this man reaches it. Such interruptions interfere seriously with production and may easily counterbalance the supposed saving gained by such operating methods. The grouping of substations for convenience in operating may also result in excessive copper loss and consequently poor trolley voltage, with its attendant evils of low locomotive speeds and increased locomotive motor maintenance. The speed of the coal-cutting machines will also be reduced. By relieving the substation of its, burden of the operating labor cost, the most economical location, from an electrical standpoint, may be chosen. The matter of machine insurance should also be considered. If an attendant is caring for several kinds of equipment, he cannot watch the machine continually for signs of trouble; therefore, continued overload, phase failure, low alternating-current voltage, bearing trouble, etc. may result. Some partly automatic equipments have been installed; these have protection against low voltage, reverse current, and bearing trouble and are provided with automatic reclosing circuit breakers. This is a step in the right direction but it does not go far enough to give first-class machine insurance.

Wellbore stability is a major concern for drilling in naturally fractured formations. The infiltration of drilling mud into the fractures is a factor, which may compromise wellbore integrity due to the loss of strength experienced by the fractures. The reduction in the fracture frictional and cohesive properties is attributed to weakening of the infill materials and lubrication of fracture asperities by the mud filtrate. One way to investigate the influence of mud infiltration on wellbore stability in fractured formations is to use a numerical modeling approach. A requirement for the numerical model is the ability to predict the region of mud infiltration. This paper describes a numerical technique to model the extent of mud infiltration for application in coupled fluid-mechanical simulations in densely fractured rock masses using the computer code, UDEC. Several factors are considered including fracture pattern, in-situ stresses, reduction in joint frictional angle and cohesion, viscosity of the mud filtrate and fracture plugging. Results of numerical simulations are presented to illustrate the technique and show the influence of these factors on the extent of mud infiltration. Un des problèmes importants posés par le forage en milieu fissuré saturé, est celui du maintient de la stabilité du puit. L’infiltration de boue de forage dans le massif peut avoir pour effet de réduire les propriétés frictionnelles et cohésives des fractures et de compromettre ainsi la stabilité du puit de forage. Le radoucissement des propriétés des fractures est attribué à la dégradation du materiau de remplissage et au pouvoir lubrifiant des boues. L’analyse numérique offre un moyen d’investiguer l’influence jouée par l’infiltration de boue sur la stabilité du puit. Un des critères de sélection du modèle numérique sera son pouvoir de prédiction du domaine d’infiltration de boue. Cet article décrit une technique numérique permettant de modéliser l’infiltration de boue de forage dans le cadre de simulations hydro-mécaniques, en milieu à haute densité de fractures, effectuées avec le logiciel de calcul UDEC. Parmis les facteurs tenus en compte, on trouvera la nature du réseau de fractures, les contraintes in-situ, le radoucissement en friction et cohésion des joints, la viscosité de la boue et le bourrage des fractures. Des résultats de simulations sont présentés pour illustrer la technique et montrer l’influence de ces facteurs sur la taille du domaine d’infiltration de boue. The use of piled raft foundations has been considered as an economical alternative to conventional piled foundations because a portion of the applied load is carried by the raft in the design of piled raft foundation. In analyzing the behavior of a piled raft foundation as a settlement reducer, an accurate estimate of settlements of the system should be made on the basis of the understanding of nonlinear behavior of piles in layered soils as well as the interaction between the raft, soils, and piles. Although the 3-dimensional finite element method and simplified analysis methods have been used for the design of piled raft foundations, these methods were found to be inadequate for the practical purpose or could not consider the interactions properly. This study developed an approximate hybrid method of analysis to be used for the practical design of piled raft foundations considering pile-soil, raft-soil, pile-soil-pile and raft-soil-pile interactions. In the presented method of analysis, the settlements of the system are estimated satisfying the compatibility of two separate models which are the flexible raft model consisting of 2-dimensional finite elements supported by springs representing soils and piles, and the group-pile model embedded in layers of soil having different properties. Comparisons with other analytical methods as well as a 3-dimensional FEM program were made to verify the sufficient capabilities of the proposed hybrid model for application to practical design and analysis of piled raft foundations.

Thermodynamic properties of the solutions of hydrogen in metals and carbon in austenite were investigated and it is possible to predict the interstitial solubility in these systems over relatively wide ranges of temperature and solute activity. Monte Carlo methods were used to compute the arrangements of interstitial atoms on the tetrahedral sites in body centred cubic metals and the octahedral sites in face centred cubic metals. It was shown that the non-configurational entropies of solution of hydrogen in metals can be interpreted as being principally vibrational and on this basis the potential value of the isotopic solubility ratio theory in indicating the compositional variation of these non-configurational entropies was discussed. The need for future work along these lines is pointed out.

A leaching column technique that produces effluent similar in quality to coal mine drainage in the Eastern Interior Basin has been developed. The columns are charged with 1000 grams of crushed overburden and cycled through the leaching process once a week for twelve weeks. Inter-relationships among the important chemical constituents are very similar to those present in actual mine drainage waters, but the overall concentrations of ion are more dilute in the leachates. Multiplying the leachate concentrations by a factor of 4.5 gives values similar to mine waters. Available data suggests that each of the leaching cycles represents about three years of natural weathering, so that the leaching technique can predict the evolution of the mire drainage water over a time span of nearly 40 years. Use of the leaching technique with drill core samples should provide a method of approximating mine drainage quality in advance of mining and should be quite useful in identifying potentially toxic units in the overburden. However, the results should he considered to be a 'worst case' situation because the technique' does not consider the effects of reclamation.

Appropriate seals, portal ground improvement, and compatible shaft construction techniques are vital elements for launching and receiving tunnels effectively in urban areas where adjacent property requires protection from excess ground movements. This paper focuses on seals and ground improvement along with shaft wall types, required to launch or receive tunnel boring machines within wet, permeable ground at the portal zone. The paper also discusses probing to verify suitability before the tunnel eye is cut. Methods addressed include: rubber gasket seals; soft eyes; double walls; top hats for reception; and, portal zone ground improvement (permeation grouting, jet grouting, un-reinforced slurry diaphragm wall panels, ground freezing, deep soil mixing, dewatering, and over-excavation and backfilling). This paper focuses on challenges with launch and reception of pressurized-face TBMs with precast concrete segment linings. Challenges related to pipe jacking are discussed in a separate paper titled ?Mitigating Microtunnel Launch and Reception Challenges? (Hunt and Finney 2008).

Previous studies and research efforts have shown that noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a problem in the U.S. mining industry. In response, researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have been conducting a cross-sectional survey of equip­ment noise and worker noise exposures in the mining industry to estimate the potential for NIHL within the mining community. One commodity recently surveyed was the extraction of sand and gravel from surface pits and by dredging. To address the potential for NIHL in the sand and gravel industry, sound levels on and around the dredges and processing equipment were recorded to iden­tify areas of high noise levels. Full-shift worker dosimetry, in conjunction with task observations, was documented to determine the relationship between exposure and source. This paper presents research examining noise on dredges used in several surface mine sand and gravel operations and in the processing facilities. Results indicate that there are areas on the dredges (crane, suction pumps and diesel engines) where sound levels greater than 90 dB(A) are pres­ent. In addition, crushers and screens used in the processing of the sand and gravel also generate sound levels greater than 90 dB(A). Although no surveyed worker exceeded the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s (MSHA’s) permissible exposure level (PEL) of 90 dB(A) eight-hour time-weighted average (TWA8), laborers, mechanics, oilers, helpers, pickers and greasers are the workers most likely to be exposed to hazardous sound levels and to thus develop NIHL over time

The Bureau of Mines measured respirable dust in coal mines by means of multiple dust samplers worn by persons moving about the mines. The measurements were made primarily to evaluate the effectiveness of certain dust-control techniques; however, for this report, the data have been analyzed to determine the precision of the personal dust-sampling measurements. A total of 68 sets of measurements were available from multiple personal samplers. The measured dust masses were less than 1.0 mg because the sampling times were short. The coefficient of variation calculated from these data was 18.5 pct, compared with coefficients of variation ranging from about 10 to 30 pct, which were calculated from the most precise and extensive data available for fixed-point dust measurements made in coal mines. From this comparison, it is concluded that dust samplers worn by personnel are as precise as fixed-point samplers in measuring respirabe coal dust; the wearing of the samplers by someone moving about a mine does not contribute significantly to the variation in measurements made with these instruments.

Hurricane Katrina caused significant damage to transportation structures on the Gulf coast in August, 2005, including the destruction of the US 90 Bridge over Biloxi Bay, Mississippi. Part of the successful design/build proposal for the replacement bridge included a comprehensive test pile program of indicator piles and load test piles in the geotechnical investigation program. A total of 22 indicator piles were installed on the project using the pile driving analyzer to monitor the pile behavior. Five load tests were performed: two axial Statnamic, two lateral Statnamic, and one static axial. The results of the test pile program established driving criteria for production piles that included end-of-drive blow counts and pile tip elevations with an appropriate allowance for setup. The program also confirmed that the planned installation equipment and techniques of GC Constructors, a joint venture of Massman Construction Co., Kiewit Southern Co., and Traylor Bros., Inc., would install the piles to the design tip elevations before production piles began. An extensive program of restrike measurements at a range of times after initial driving of the indicator piles provided a systematic documentation of pile setup in the soil profiles on the site. These resistance values were used to develop a dimensionless setup factor ?S? as the ratio of the restrike resistance to the end of drive resistance. This factor varied from 1.5 for piles penetrating clays and tipped in sand to 3.0 for piles bearing completely in clay and helped establish an end-of drive blow count that included an allowance for setup. The CAPWAP analyses of restrike data with setup and the load test data were used to confirm the design unit side shear and end bearing values developed from the borings and static capacity calculations and to select the design pile lengths.

Ion flotation shows great promise for recovering and removing metal ions from dilute process streams, either for environmental compliance or to recover values. This technique uses an ionic collector to concentrate non-surface active colligend ions of the opposite charge from a bulk solution at the solution?vapor interface. With a sufficiently large solution?vapor interfacial area (provided, for example, by sparging gas through the solution), the colligend can be concentrated and removed along with the collector in a foam phase. A key limitation on using the technique in the minerals industry, where many process streams contain a variety of ions and have relatively high ionic strengths, is the need to control which ions are interacting with the collector. Here the effect of three different chelating agents, namely dodecyldiethylenetriamine (Ddien), ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) and triethylenetetraamine (Trien), on the selectivity of copper, nickel and cobalt, or copper and alkaline earth metal ions, is reported. The results are discussed in terms of their implications for adoption in the minerals industry.

Although the exact mechanisms underlying vibration white finger (VWF) are not clear, it has been speculated that VWF is associated with variations of the blood flow patterns due to the physical damage and/or degeneration in neural and vascular tissue caused by vibration loading [1]. Excessive dynamic deformation of the soft tissues in the fingertip under vibration loading is believed to induce multiple occupation-related hand/finger disorders. However, the in vivo distributions of the dynamic stress/strain of the tissues in the fingertip under vibration conditions have not been studied because they cannot be measured experimentally to date. The goal of this study is to analyze, theoretically, the location and frequency-dependent dynamic deformation of the soft tissue in the fingertip during vibration exposures. [ ] Methods The fingertip considered in the model is the distal phalanx, the portion from the distal end of the fingertip to the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint articulation (Fig. 1). The external shape of the fingertip was determined using a smooth mathematical surface fitting to the observed fingertip shapes. The fingertip surface was then scaled to the dimensions of a typical male index finger: length 25 mm, width 20 mm, and height 18 mm. The fingertip was approximated to be symmetric, such that only a half of the fingertip was considered in the FE modeling. The fingertip was assumed to be composed of outer and inner skin layers, subcutaneous tissue, bone, and nail. The soft tissues (inner skin layer and subcutaneous tissues) were assumed to be nonlinearly elastic and viscoelastic, while the bone, nail, and outer skin layer were considered as linearly elastic. The simulations were conducted using a displacement-controlled protocol in two stages. First, the fingertip was statically pre-compressed. The contact plate was first displaced towards the finger to achieve a predetermined value of tissue deformation (i.e., 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 mm). Second, the steady-state dynamics responses of the fingertip were analyzed using a linear perturbation procedure. The fingertip was subjected to a continuous harmonic excitation (magnitude 0.5 mm) from the contact interface. The dynamic analysis was performed in a frequency domain ranging from 16 to 2000 Hz. The frequency-dependent distributions of the vibration magnitude and dynamic strain magnitudes in the soft tissues are investigated. Results Typical simulation results for the frequency-dependent distributions of the vibration magnitude in the soft tissues are shown in Fig. 2 (figures show the results with a pre-compression of 2.0 mm). The vibration magnitude at the contact surface is 0.5 mm (specified) for all frequencies, while the vibration magnitudes in the soft tissues are location- and frequency-dependent. It is clear that the fingertip has a major resonance around 125 Hz, at which the vibration magnitudes in the soft tissues are over four times greater than that of the contact plate (0.5 mm). Under the requirement to define the economic advantages of using hydrogen fuelcell vehicles, a broadscoped project was initiated to quantify the costs associated with operating fuelcell vehicles and diesel vehicles. While ventilation savings are clearly an advantage for the former, a complete and detailed analysis of this and other operational and capital cost elements was undertaken in order to provide the mining industry with factual information in considering the changeover from one technology to another. This article outlines the results of the investigations to date defining the costs/benefits associated with: capital purchases, operations (electrical/diesel, mine air heating fuel, ventilation, openings, surface and underground infrastructure, maintenance, labour, etc.), delivery of energy, regulatory obligations, and mine production. Considerations are given to the type and size of a mining operation, the depth, and location in North America. Significant ventilation power, equipment and infrastructure savings are possible with the application of fuelcells for shallower mine applications. At depth, where heat is an issue, there is a reduction in benefit. Specific qualifiers such as minimum air velocities, dust dilution, shaft and heating system velocity limits must be considered on an individual mine basis. While the capital cost for fuelcell mining equipment is currently higher than diesel versions, the high cost of fuelcells is anticipated to be reduced significantly in the near future with the intensification of manufacturing. In either case the operational savings would probably be sufficient to balance the supplementary capitalization costs. A comprehensive cost-benefit report will be issued in the near future.

Investigation into the mixing of 150t ladle furnace by two-nozzle jetting was performed by a water model simulation of 1:4. The effects of nozzle arrangements including separation angle, radial position and asymmetry as well as tracer adding position on the mixing time were studied. The most favorable mixing is achieved when the two nozzles are symmetrically arranged at half radii in the ladle, with 45o separation angle. The empirical relationship between the mixing time and stirring power intensity has been established for two-nozzle jetting based on the present experimental results. In addition, the swelling above bath surface is also investigated with two-nozzle jetting.

Revegetation success on surface mined lands is dependent upon the nature of the plant growth media. Soil physical and chemical properties dictate the needs for specific reclamation and subsequent management practices. Field experiments were conducted at six coal mine sites in Oliver and Mercer Counties, North Dakota to determine the subsequent effects of a single application of selected amendments on spoil and topsoils over the five year period, 1974-1978. Considerable variations in the physical and chemical properties were found in mine spoils from site to site. The texture of spoils ranged from sandy clay loamy at North Beulah I to loamy at Glenharold, and from sandy loamy at North Beulah 3 and South Beulah sites to loamy sands at the Center site. The pH of the sites ranged from 6.5 at South Beulah to 8.2 at North Beulah 3. In many cases, the pH values of mine spoils were not significantly different from the topsoils. The electrical conductivity (ECe) did not exceed 6 mmhos cm-1 at the test sites even though in other studies much higher values were recorded in the same vicinity. The spoils from Glenharold and North Beulah test sites can be classed as moderately saline, and those from Center and South Beulah as non-saline. The sodium adsorption ratios (SAR) varied from less than 1 to 32, with highest values in the spoils of North Beulah 3 followed by Glenharold; all other sites were nonsodic. Lowest SAR values (less than 1) were found in the topsoiled sites at South Beulah and Center. Spoils of North Beulah 3 test site were highly calcareous, followed by North Beulah 2 and Glenharold. Center mine spoils which were the least calcareous of the test sites, showed the calcium carbonate equivalent three times higher than that of the topsoil. The average calcium concentrations in the spoils of North Beulah 3 and South Beulah test sites were -13 and 14 me 100g -l while at North Beulah 2 and Glenharold test sites 25 and 22 me 100-1-1 were recorded, respectively. The overall magnesium concentrations ranged from an average of 4 to 16 me 100g 1. Sodium concentrations in all sites never exceeded 10 me 100g-1. Phosphorus concentrations on the average at North Beulah 1, North Beulah 2, and Center were 10.2, 4.6, and 22.2 µg g -1 spoil, respectively. Concentrations of potassium ranged from 200 ppm at South Beulah site to more than 375 pp in at the Glenharold site. High concentrations of sulfates (239-2778 µg g-1) seem to contribute to the salinity in these spoils. Chloride concentrations of spoils were low and never exceeded 40 µg g-1 spoil. Based on established critical levels of deficiency for micronutrients in agricultural soils, it seems that none of these were deficient. However, controlled environment experiments did reveal increased plant growth responses when some micronutrients were added to the mine spoils. Treatment effects were highly site specific depending on the nature of the soil/spoil characteristics and, of course, the properties of the various treatments. While slack coal amendment to the spoils at North Beulah 2 site affected significant increases in a large number of variables (both major and trace elements), amendment of the topsoils at the South Beulah test site with leonardite resulted in significant decreases in a number of variables, particularly trace elements. Spoils at Glenharold and North Beulah 3 demonstrated the fewest significant changes due to amendments. Calcium, magnesium, strontium, organic matter and nitrogen were consistently increased from site to site with the addition of lignitic materials. Other spoil/topsoil physical and chemical properties (30 variables) as affected by amendments and time are discussed.
