Mapping of exposed rock walls provides data on geological features such as joints, bedding planes, faults etc critical to the economics and the safety of mine operations. Traditional, manual methods of mapping can be time consuming, error prone and limited in their coverage. New methods have been developed to map exposed faces remotely and safely however the benefits of these methods are only fully realised when exposed structures can be quickly and easily mapped using automated methods. This paper describes the application of an automated method of analysis of 3D images that provides users with the capacity to map exposed structures automatically. The method is based on the use of vector classification methods used in some neural network systems and provides rapid and reliable identification of exposed planes. CSIRO Exploration and Mining is applying these methods to 3D images for a range of applications from pit mapping to machine automation.

This paper describes a field/laboratory study that was conducted in cooperation with a mine in Arizona. The primary purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of blasting energy on the crushability and grindability of the post-blast rock fragments. The crushability and grindability of the rock fragments were evaluated through laboratory comminution tests. A secondary purpose of the study was to investigate different laboratory methods for estimating the comminution properties of the rock fragments. In particular, a number of standard rock mechanics tests were conducted and compared with the comminution test results. Finally, the study was used to evaluate new technologies for estimating insitu rock mass strength and for assessing post-blast fragmentation. To estimate in-situ rock mass strength, the specific energy of drilling (SE) was calculated during blast hole drilling utilizing a continuous drill monitoring system. Post-blast fragmentation was estimated using the Split image processing system. Results from the study support the idea that increases in blast energy can enhance crushing and grinding. Also, several simple rock mechanics tests were found to correlate well with the results from standard comminution tests, which could prove to be useful in practice.

"Industrial use of abrasive stress takes place in the area of fine grinding and in order to clean surface contaminated soil particles. Also, at many mechanical operations abrasion emerge as an unintended side effect. At the Institute for Raw and Waste Material Processing at the Technical University of Berlin systematic investigations are carried out, to further the knowledge regarding the dependence of abrasion process on material properties and stress mechanisms as a basis for design and optimisation of the process or for its avoidance. Aim was the mathematical description of the abrasion process running with a single particle stress. For the purpose of investigations an agitation cell was used. Limestone served as material.In the presented work the influence of particle diameter, particle shape and collision energy on the mass and particle size distribution of abrasion debris was studied. The surface geometry of the particle was characterised by the particle shape factor ?x and the particle diameter dp. The particle shape factor ?x stays in direct relation with the abrasion degree x, and can be substituted by a mathematical function of x.Physically the particle shape factor ?x can be interpreted as a proportion of abrasive stresses splitting up complete crystals and crystal fragments. These two different mechanisms depend on different ratios of curvature of the surface of the stressed particle. The abrasive stress of strongly curved surface areas leads to separation of complete crystals. The abrasive stress of weakly curved surface areas leads to separation of crystals fragments. Accordingly the mass of wear mAb and median diameter of the abrasion debris d50 are different. The derived mathematical relations consider this behaviour by the particle shape factor ?x , which represents the ratio of the mixture of both stress mechanisms. The dependence of the particle shape factor ?x on the abrasion degree x with an exponent approximately to 2/3 points out that the particle shape factor ?x represents a surface area relation."

THE Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act (30 U.S.C., 321-325, and amendments) became law April 5, 1944, and a period of intensive research and development in this field was begun by the Federal Bureau of Mines. As part of this program, bulletins were published on pressure hydrogenation,3 the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis,4 and nil stifle.5 The. Bureau also has published a short bibliography on coal gasification,6 mostly of a theoretical nature. Because anal gasification is prerequisite to either the Fischer-Tropsch or coal-hydrogenation processes, publishing this sizable collection of technical information in this form Will Ire valuable. The material will he presented in three parts. as follows I. United Stares Patents. II. United Kingdom, Australian, Canadian, and South African Patents. III. Other Foreign Patents. Increasing the throughput of the MMG Century operation by over 25% from past practice to preserve cash flow close to the end of life of mine has revealed new throughput and load dynamic instabilities in the SAG mill causing significant time averaged loss of production. A twelve microphone array around the SAG mill (Pax, 2014) using the non-contact acoustic measurement methodology (Pax, 2011, 2012) has been used to diagnose the new dynamics. Dynamic acoustic noise signal information allows discrimination of the behaviour of the steel balls and the rock. Determination of mill load, toe and shoulder angles, water holdup, and proxies for mill load are possible.The instability was diagnosed with the help of an abnormality in the liners/lifters of the SAG mill with one row of lifters having a slightly increased in-mill life compared to the rest. The steel shoulder angle is observed to be disturbed cyclically at a rate of precisely one revolution at low throughputs of 750 t/h. However, at throughputs closer to 1100 t/h, the cyclic signal disappears indicating additional dynamics to randomise the repetitive behaviour of the mill charge. The cyclic signal has been used to operate the SAG mill with improved stability at 1100 t/h by adjusting the feed water addition rate.This paper presents and discusses these results and proposes the suggested origin of the extra dynamics. A small consistent aberration of the lifters circumferentially provides a useful detector of stable mill operation and a novel sensor for the dynamics of the internal operation of a SAG mill.CITATION:Pax, R A and Cornish, B, 2015. In order to determine the potential availability of alumina to feed U.S. aluminum smellers, the Bureau of Mines evaluated 39 domestic mines and deposits of bauxite, alunite, and high-alumina clays and found that substantial increases in alumina prices would be necessary before nonbauxitic deposits could become competitive with bauxite. As part of the study, a price-tonnage relationship was developed indicating the quantity of alumina that could be produced from known deposits at various alumina prices and at a 15-pct discounted cash flow rate of return on the required capital investment. All capital and operating costs were calculated in August 1980 dollars. The domestic bauxite reserve base comprises three operating bauxite mines in Arkansas containing some 15.6 million metric tons of recoverable alumina (A1203). Ferruginous bauxites, clays, and alunites fall into the subeconomic category of identified aluminum resources, which, at the demonstrated level, contain over 4,000 million metric tons of alumina that are estimated to be recoverable. Analyses indicate that, at the demonstrated resource level, a total of some 15.6 million metric tons of alumina, all from three active Arkansas bauxite mines, is recoverable at a 1980 price of $0.12 per pound ($264 per metric ton) of alumina. A price of approximately $0.26 per pound ($573 per metric ton) of alumina would be required for production of the total U.S. resource. Thus, unless new technological breakthroughs occur that could make alternate sources of alumina competitive with bauxite, U.S. dependence upon imported bauxite will continue to increase.

Even though there is always a feeling of anticipation before a blast is detonated, most blasts are part of a day’s work. Once in a while there is an event that impresses even the most jaded blaster. Few blasts have had the impact of the Kingdome implosion in March of this year. Fortunately for both the Seattle area and the explosives community, the “impact” of the implosion was far less than many local residents had feared. This outcome, of course, was not by chance, but the result of careful planning and design. An urban implosion requires a mix of engineering, logistics, and public relations. Unique challenges on this project tested the resourcefulness of the entire team.

Currently, at Caltrans, the Office of Structure Design is carrying out an extensive seismic retrofit program involving transportation structures throughout California. The goal of the retrofit program has been to upgrade existing transportation structures to meet the present seismic codes and anticipated loads that are generated during a seismic event Part of the retrofit program involves retrofitting existing structure foundations when required. To determine if the foundations of a specific structure need to be retrofitted, an engineering analysis of the existing foundations has to be done. If the engineering analysis of the structure foundations determines that the foundations will not meet the load carrying demands required by the structural engineer, the existing foundations are then retrofitted. The retrofit projects that require foundation modifications can be separated into two general cases. The first case comprises structures where the original designs will not meet the demands of the present seismic design code. In this case, the existing foundations are not capable of providing the load capacities the current seismic code requires. The second case consists of structures where the retrofitting of the superstructure will increase the required load carrying capacity of the existing foundations during a seismic event In this case, the anticipated load demands on the existing foundations are greater than the foundations are capable of providing. For either of the cases listed above, the present strategy for increasing the capacity of the existing structure foundation consists of installing tiedown anchors or large capacity piles to provide the required resistance to seisraically induced loads.

In the mining industry, where some of the vehicles are larger than a one-story house, tire maintenance cannot be accomplished by the tire shop alone. It takes an army of people to maintain a fleet of 100 trucks that may be transporting gold, iron ore, oil sand, copper or coal from an openpit to a refinery and eventually delivering the product to a customer. Everyone working in and around these mammoth machines has a duty to help with the maintenance of the tires, whether they know it or not. These responsibilities comprise observation and reporting hazards up to and including changing out a tire and recording the information in a tire-tracking program such as TreadStat.

Bubble attachment time measurements for the rare-earth phosphate minerals monazite and xenotime were made as a function of oleate concentration, sodium fluoride addition, and temperature. Results indicate that the rare-earth phosphates behave similarly to other phosphate minerals, notably collophanlte and fluorapatite, which have been studied previously. The addition of sodium fluoride yielded a modest decrease in bubble attachment time with fluoride additions below the apparent fluoride surface precipitation point, while at fluoride additions greater than the apparent precipitation point a significant decrease in attachment time occurs. Increasing the temperature or the system gave a slight decrease in bubble attachment time in the absence or sodium fluoride. With sodium fluoride addition and below the apparent fluoride surface precipitation point, an increase in temperature actually increased the attachment time. For sodium fluoride additions above the apparent fluoride surface precipitation point, a temperature increase significantly decreased the attachment time.

Geologic faults have always been a plague to the mining industry, and have often reduced a mining venture from a profitable to a marginal operation, and even at times have forced companies to liquidation or bankruptcy. The use of geology as an economic tool in coal mining is not generally recognized, particularly in coal deposits which are horizontal or essentially flat-lying, in which faulting might not be prevalent. However in pitching coal seams, the existence of faults is considered an inherent challenge, as the inclination of the seam or seams per se, is a product of geologic disturbance. The problems of faults are a constant challenge to the management of the Thompson Creek Coal and Coke Corp. in their operations in Pitkin County, Colorado, where high grade medium volatile coking coal is mined. The background for this paper has been provided by the experiences of these operations, in overcoming the effects of faults in mining, and resolving the fault structures. The properties of the Thompson Creek Coal and Coke Corp. are located in central Colorado, 13 miles southwest of Carbondale, Colorado, a tow] on the main highway between Glenwood Springs and Aspen, Fig. 1. The elevation at the mine portals is approximately 8000 feet: there is a relief of some 2.000 feet to the adjacent ridges rising away from the [nine portals. 'The entire present production of these properties totaling 180.000 tons of clean coal per year is trucked to the railhead at Carbondale, Colorado, from whence it is shipped to the Geneva Steel Plant at Provo, Utah. The properties were initially opened in September 1952. A total of 125 men are currently employed with the production conting from the Number 1 and 3 Mines, and development workings of the Number 2 and 5 Mines respectively. While the No. 2 Vine was opened in 1953 prior to No, 3 Mine, the encountering of faults without sufficient development work accomplished to sustain production, necessitated the diversion of manpower to the other [nines for economic considerations. The Bureau of Mines examined and tested the rhodonite deposits of the Silverton lead-zinc district, San Juan County, Colo., as a possible source of domestic manganese. Exploration and development work by several mining companies and preliminary reconnaissance of the area by Bureau of Mines engineers indicated the presence of extensive manganese resources in the form of rhodonite. This report summarizes the results of laboratory beneficiation tests made on samples of different type and grade material obtained from surface and underground exposures of seven veins in the district. Surface and underground examinations revealed the presence of several prominent veins that could be traced up to 2 miles for a single vein along the surface. The principal veins average about 50 feet in width and apparently carry rhodonite to considerable depth. Underground samples were taken from the Sunnyside, Silver Queen, Washington, Independence, and Scotia veins. Samples also were taken from surface exposures of the Sunnyside Extension and Hidden Treasure veins.

OZ Minerals Limited owns and operates the Prominent Hill Copper-Gold Mine, located 140 km southeast of Coober Pedy in far north South Australia. The Prominent Hill mine comprises an open cut mine with an initial 10 year mine-life and an 8 Mtpa conventional grinding and flotation plant to produce high quality copper-gold-silver concentrates, which are exported by road to local customers and by rail to the port of Darwin for shipment on to Southeast Asian smelters. Mine and process operations at Prominent Hill are licensed to abstract a water supply of up to 26 ML/d, sourced from a borefield located 40 km and extending to 80 km east of the mine. The arid climate of the broader Prominent Hill region means that groundwater is important for sustaining community and pastoral industries in the region, and security of water rights for third party users is a critically important water management issue posing a significant challenge to the development of Prominent Hill. Depth to water table and the typically high salinity of groundwater in the region means there is little environmental dependence on groundwater within the immediate Project area (mine lease and wellfields). The Prominent Hill mine and associated infrastructure lies within the South Australian Far North Prescribed Wells Area (FNPWA), which was principally defined to ensure the ongoing security of the ecologically, socially and culturally significant GAB springs, of which the closest are found around 150 km northeast of Prominent Hill, and only 50 km northeast of the water supply borefield. Prescribing of the FNPWA meant that OZ Minerals was required to demonstrate to both State and Federal Government agencies that the mine's water supply is independent of that which supports GAB springs and other third party water users in the region. Recognising these potential obstacles, OZ Minerals successfully defined and developed a previously unknown industrial quality groundwater resource, separate from other important groundwater resources in the region that supply community, pastoral and environmental users, ensuring third party water user sustainability.

Demonstrate the technical feasibility of using nontraditional, low-rank, coal-based fuels and new coal-based technologies for mineral and metallurgical applications. Approach A cooperative research effort was initiated between the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of Energy and the minerals industry to extend the application of the fixed-bed gasification process to low-rank Western coals. The research effort enabled cooperators to gain operating experience in the use of hot, raw producer gas for iron ore pellet induration and other high-temperature mineral processes. Researchers were able to gather data regarding the fundamental engineering aspects of the fixed-bed process and gas cleanup for a wide range of solid fuel properties. Applying Fixed-Bed Gasification As a prerequisite to gathering the data needed for the study, the Bureau of Mines designed and installed, at one of its laboratories, a 6.5-ft-diam. single stage, fixed-bed, air-blown atmospheric pressure gasifier. The gasifier was coupled with a hot, raw gas combustion system and iron ore pellet in. duration kiln. The gasifier is rated at 1.5 ton/h capacity of bituminous coal.

"Chador-Malu iron ore is one of the most important iron mines of Iran.About 98 percent of Fe in the ore is in shape of Magnetite, Hematite, Martite, aqua oxide of Iron and the other irons are with ferrous silicates, actinolite, cholorite and ferrous dolomites. 1% of Fe has replaced in pyrite. The phosphor distribution in the ore is non-hemogenous and its average in the whole of the deposit is 94%. It is in shape of Apatite.This mine contains considerable phosphor, which makes it useless for metallurgical uses. At this mine the phosphor is reduced in the iron ore at two steps. At the first step, magnetic part of the ore is separated from the gangues and phosphors by magnetic separator. At the second step, the ore is enriched by the flotation methods. Experimental flotation methods to obtain the optimum conditions are as follows:• Effect of Starch as Hematite depressant with ATRAC as Apatite collector• Effect of Sodium silicate as Hematite depressant with ATRAC as Apatite collector• Effect of ASAM as Apatite collector with Sodium silicate as Hematite depressant• Effect of ATRAC (BEROL) as Apatite collector with Sodium silicate as Hematite depressant• Effect of ASAM & ATRAC mixture as Apatite collector with Sodium silicate as Hematite depressant• Effect of Kcarbonate as pH-modifier• Final test to Optimize pH, Collector, DepressantAt this research we have found the optimum circumstance of the flotation of Chador-Malu iron ore in order to decreasing phosphors of iron oxide and floating of Apatite to make pure Hematite.To reach the optimum conditions, some tests were done with different amounts of pH, collector and depressant. Underwater explosions have been used as a test method for the determination of energy content of explosives for several decades. This is the only test method by which shock, gas heave and total energy values can be measured separately. The experimental data can be measured from the pressure-time curves measured by the pressure-recording unit. The shock energy is integrated from the shock peak area and the gas heave energy is calculated from the time interval between the primary shock wave front and the shock wave caused by the first bubble implosion. tb. Bubble period, tb, is the time of first bubble oscillation, the time which passes after the shock peak front to the first bubble peak. The total energy value is the sum of these two partial energies.

The goal of any business is to seek the maximum profitability for the organization through optimization the use of resources, processes and the application of new technologies. An analysis of various case studies demonstrate that blasting can have positive impacts on the crushing and milling processes resulting in increased profitability for the mining industry (Grundstrom, Kanchibotla, Jankovich & Thornton, 2001). This paper describes the case study of two copper mines in Peru producing Cu-Mo and Cu-Au concentrates, which together with their strategic partner, have implemented a project focused on the improvement of rock fragmentation. The project was based on techniques of pattern size reduction, the use of high energy explosives and the technology of electronic initiation. Combined, these techniques were shown to have significantly impacted the efficiency of downstream processes.
