As a part of its safety program the United States Bureau of Mines has fostered the development, use, and improvement of portable electric mine lamps. Although there is still need for better illumination in mines and the replacement of open lights has been slow, improvement in electric cap lamps and increase in their use indicate one phase of recent progress toward safer and more efficient mining This report is the result of a recent survey of electric-lamp installations in the Alabama mining; district; it shows the misuse, increase in use, and relation to certain classes of accidents of these installations.

Working in gassy ground conditions is an everyday occurrence for the U.S. coal mining industry. As tunneling operators begin to venture into projects that expose them to the additional hazard of potentially explosive atmospheres, lessons learned by the mining industry over years of experience should be transferred into this industry. This paper will present practices developed by the U.S. coal mining industry for dealing with the problem of excavating material in potentially explosive atmospheres. Procedures will be discussed that can be used to detect and quantify gas prior to mining that have application to the construction industry. Degasification or drainage practices, including predrainage from vertical and horizontal boreholes, will be discussed. Also, ventilation practices commonly used in the mining industry will be presented.

A series of measurements of induced stress by the Compact Conical-ended Borehole Overcoring (CCBO) technique was performed within rock mass around a tunnel excavated in a region that an underground powerhouse is constructed under high initial rock stress. In the measurements, a phenomenon of core disking was observed during overcoring. The selecting method of strain data uninfluenced by the core disking was proposed, using X-ray CT scanner. Then, the state of induced stress determined from the selected strain data was discussed, comparing with the state of initial stress. Eine Serie von Messungen von induzierter Belastung mit kompaktem konisch-beendetem Überbohrverfahren (CCBO) wurde in Felsmassen um einen Tunnel ausgeführt, der in einer Region gebohrt wurde wo ein unterirdisches Kraftwert unter hoher anfänglicher Felsbelastung gebaut wird. Bei den Messungen wurde beim Überbohrverfahren ein Phänomen des Core Disking beobachtet. Die gewählte Methode der Belastungsdaten, unbeeinflusst durch Core Disking wurde vorgeschlagen, unter Verwendung von Röntgen-CT-Scanner. Dann wurde der Zustand der induzierten Belastung aus den gewählten Belastungsdaten diskutiert, unter Vergleich mit der ursprünglichen Belastung. Une série de mesures de contrainte induite effectuée avec la technique de forage de sur-carottage compacte à embout conique a été exécutée dans la masse rocheuse autour d'un tunnel excavé dans une région de construction d'une centrale électrique souterraine sous haute contrainte de roche initiale. Au cours des mesures, un phénomène de discage de carotte a été observé pendant le sur-carottage. La méthode de sélection des données de contrainte non influencée par le discage de carotte a été proposée, en utilisant un scanneur de tomographie calculée aux rayons X. Il s'ensuit que l'état de contrainte induite provoquée et déterminé à partir des données de la contrainte sélectionnées a été traitée, en effectuant une comparaison avec l'état de contrainte initiale.

"Industrias Peñoles, S.A. de C.V. in Mexico, has nine mining operations, six managed by Peñoles (base metal mines) and three managed by Fresnillo plc (precious metal mines). Seven of the operations use flotation and the other two are heap leach operations, one for gold and the other one for copper.This paper gives a brief introduction of Peñoles, shows mine locations and describes the main process characteristics of each concentrator. It also presents four of the new operating practices that were implemented over the last four years to improve the economics of the mining operations. These include (1) the use of centrifugal gravity concentrators to increase the recovery of gravity recoverable gold (GRG) and silver (GRS), (2) the use of expert systems to reduce process variability while increasing grades and recoveries, (3) the application of the Six Sigma methodology to key projects to ensure success and personnel development and (4) the use of water chemistry fundamentals to identify chemistry problems and design adequate solutions for improving grades and recoveries.INTRODUCTIONPeñoles was founded in 1887. It is a mining group with integrated smelting, refining and chemicals producing operations. Peñoles is the world largest producer of refined silver and metallic bismuth, the leading Latin American producer of refined gold and lead. It is amongst the world leading producers of refined zinc and sodium sulfate.Peñoles operates and controls six underground mines in Mexico and is the largest producer of zinc and lead of the country. It also produces copper concentrates and cathodes. Through its 77.1% equity stake in Fresnillo plc (a London Stock Exchange listed company); Peñoles is also a significant producer of gold and silver. Fresnillo plc operates three precious metal mines in Mexico. While Fresnillo is the world largest primary silver mine, Ciénega and Herradura are two leading gold mines of Mexico. Figure 1 shows a map of Mexico indicating the locations of the Peñoles mines. The main process characteristics of each concentrator are listed in Table 1."

This is the final report of work accomplished during 1973-75 under U. S. Bureau of Mines Contract No. H0242015, "System for Handling Underground Mine Supplies and Materials." The purpose of the contract was to develop a mechanical device which could safely perform handling tasks that are normally done manually in underground bituminous coal mines. The report discusses studies leading to construct-ion of a battery-operated, three-wheel vehicle with a six-degree-of-freedom manipulator. Supportive design studies included collection and analysis of production, manual functions, and injury data on the underground bituminous coal mining industry. Transfer tasks in section storage and working places were the prime candidates for mechanical handling. Functional specifications were developed for two handling devices (one to handle existing unit loads and one to handle repackaged unit loads) and for a vehicle to mount the handling device. Design concepts for nine different handling devices were developed and a cost/benefit evaluation made for each. Detail design, capital and operating costs, and method improvement savings data were developed for two battery-operated vehicles and for two different manipulators. The three-wheel vehicle with anthropomorphic manipulator was chosen for development.

"Commercial development of the United States Oil Shale reserve will require substantial amounts of mining. In fact, even a modest 500,000 barrels per day industry requires a mining effort equivalent to nearly half of the current U.S. coal mining industry. Obviously, mining efforts on this scale will benefit from technological advances. There are a number of areas where advanced technology could impact mining. These include continuous miners, shale transport systems, and blasting. This paperexamines recent developments in computer modeling of blasting and assesses the likelihood of these advances being applied to practical oil shale mining problems."

Borehole Mining (BHM), a remotely-operated waterjet mining method (Figure 1), has recently achieved two major milestones. It was, for the first time, applied to the extraction of manganese ore and at temperatures below freezing. The 1St stage is a demonstration test that is now underway just north of Emily, Minnesota, where the manganese ore is located 100-160m below the surface and its reserves are estimated to be in excess of 500,000 tons. The deposit was discovered over 60 years ago but, due to the fragile and sensitive nature of this Land of 10,000 Lakes (nickname for the State of Minnesota) and strong environmental restrictions, the iron/manganese reserves were deemed unrecoverable and remained untouched until late 2010 when permission for a single-hole demo-test was issued by the local Department of Natural Resources.

The first International Conference on Ground Control in Mining opened with the topic of pillar design. Two classic papers were presented, one by Bieniwski and the other by Wilson. Unfortunately, the two methods were so radically different from each other that it was nearly impossible to reconcile them. Adding to the confusion were the many other pillar strength formulas (such as the Salamon-Munro, the Holland-Gaddy, and the Obert-Duvall, just to name a few) that were also available. Little wonder that discussions of pillar design in those days often ended with anguished cries of ?but which formula is the right one?? The past 25 years have seen substantial progress in the science of coal pillar design. Indeed, one testament to the improvement is the relative scarcity of papers on the topic at recent Conferences. Two factors have been largely responsible for the progress that has been made. The first has been the collection of large data bases of actual case histories of pillar performance in a variety of settings, from shallow room-and-pillar mines through deep cover longwalls. These have made possible the development of empirical design procedures that are closely linked to real world experience. The second important factor is the development of sophisticated computer models that can accurately simulate pillar behavior and roof/pillar/floor interactions. Together, these two lines of research have led to a new understanding of pillar mechanics that identifies three modes of pillar failure: ? Sudden, massive collapse, accompanied by airblast, for slender pillars (width/height<4) ? Squeezing, or slow, non-violent failure, for most room and pillar applications (4<w/h<10) ? Entry failure or bumps for deep cover and longwall applications (w/h>10) It is particularly satisfying that the insights gained from numerical models broadly support those obtained from the empirical studies. While far less controversial than in the past, pillar design problems continue to arise. One recent example is pillar design for highwall mining. NIOSH has just released a software package, called ARMPS-HWM, which employs a number of modern pillar design concepts. Since highwall mining web pillars are long and slender, the greatest danger is that of a sudden collapse. ARMPS-HWM suggests two possible prevention strategies, one which concentrates on the SF of the webs, and the other which creates a ?pressure arch? using properly sized barrier pillars. The paper will close with a discussion of some current needs in coal pillar design, including: ? Updating older empirical methods, such as ALPS, where changes in technology (new types of roof support, more demanding ventilation requirements, faster retreat rates) may have made some of the original case histories obsolete. ? Methods for determining site-specific coal strengths, focusing on bedding plane strength and other factors that may effect confinement, as input for both empirical and numerical design. ? Improved methods for evaluating coal pillar performance for environmental issues, such as surface subsidence and hydrologic impacts, which consider such factors as depth, w/h ratio, water immersion/drainage, and time dependent seam strength.

The establishment of a pilot plant for the continuous production of titania pigment and nano-titania is discussed. The plant was designed, constructed and operated on the Necsa site. The TiO2 production capacity is 7?10 kg.h-1 by the reaction of TiCl4 and O2at>1000°C. Liquid TiCl4 is sprayed under pressure into a plasma reactor where it evaporates and reacts with O2 to form TiO2. Process optimization has allowed for continuous production without any clogging or blockages. The primary advantage of the plasma-assisted process is the possibility to recover and recycle the chlorine values in high yield as Cl2 for use in the manufacture of TiCl4. The HCl formed in most conventional fossil-fuelled processes makes Cl2 recovery and recycling much more difficult. Particle size distribution analysis of the fine, white product revealed a d50= 125 nm. The raw product consisted of 60% rutile that could be increased to 80?100% rutile by post-annealing. The specific surface area (SSA) of the pigment was 8?20 m2?g-1(BET). According to the CIE colour index the ?whiteness? (L*>95) of the plasma-produced pigment was better than that of several commercially available pigments. The particle size could be manipulated by controlling the TiCl4 feed rate, gas flowrates, and the particle quench rate and residence time. Nano-sized TiO2 powders with a particles size (d50) as small as 50 nm were also successfully produced in this way.

Rockbursts are a major hazard in deep hard rock underground mining and tunneling. To date a significant number of rockbursts still defy conventional explanations. A review of rockburst case histories in the literature has shown that pillars and tabular excavations under shear loading are prone to rockbursting in situations where they are least expected under conventional knowledge of rockburst causes. Despite the evidence of the effects of shear loading on underground infrastructure, and the frequency of their occurrence, little is known about how this loading mechanism causes such large magnitude events and extensive damage. In this paper analytical and numerical modeling are used to understand the behaviour of pillars and tabular excavations under shear loading. The numerical modelling results show that pillars under shear loading are less confined than their equivalents in loaded in pure compression in the same geologic environment, and are therefore more brittle and weak. For tabular excavations under shear loading, the behaviour depends on whether such excavations are continuous, co-planar or offset with rock bridges. Analytical results based on slit theory show releasable potential energy in tabular excavations increases nonlinearly with excavation half-span. The study results are important for the safe and economic extraction of orebodies under shear loading.

Human response to blast induced vibration and air overpressure is an unsolved problem that accompanies excavation process in mining. Pre-assessment and understanding of annoyance due to production blasting is probably one of the most important aspects of a successful mining operation. Complaints arising due to unoptimised blasts lead to various critical situations that hamper production. Inspite, this important aspect has been covered by a limited number of researchers in the world and probably least in Indian context. Human response is a complex phenomenon and the sensitivity of individual also vary from person to person depending on various factors like age, sex, literacy, health and exposure to mining. With ever increasing demand of minerals, opencast mines are expected to approach habitats and thus mine management may witness increased response to blasting. Many developed countries have their own guidelines based on scientific analysis, addressing such environmental problems, where as there are a few studies available in India. This study introspects above phenomenon in tune with mining requirements by analysing direct human response. This paper is based on a case study regarding the human response to blast induced hazards in a Manganese mine situated in central India. Advanced techniques of Critical Path Method and Multiple Response Analyses have been used to unearth important inferences on the response of different crosssections of population residing about the mine to blast induced noise, ground vibration and air overpressure. Various inferences drawn may provide guidelines to the planners, environment or safety departments and blasting official for safe and environment friendly blast design.

"Research at Delft University aims to develop systems for automatic inspection and sorting of bulk solids which can be applied in the mineral processing and recycling industry. A recent development includes an automatic sorter based on airport X-ray inspection technology. It is designed for continuous inspection and sorting of 5 – 150 mm solids and has as objective a cost effective and high capacity on-line inspection and sorting.Dual energy X-ray transmission imaging provides instantaneous data about particle dimensions and the atomic number distribution. The system provides particle thickness and average atomic number on a pixel level at scanning speeds between 250 and 500 lines / second. With existing X-ray components inspection speeds between 0.5 and 2 m/s at approximately 1-meter inspection width and between 1.5*1.5 and 5*5 mm2 sensor resolution can be achieved.Imaging algorithms that were developed by Delft University for applications in recycling, waste cleaning and other applications acquire shape, size distribution and composition data. Currently on-line processing of a product at a rate of around 200 particles per second is possible using a standard PC. Experiments with a demonstration X-ray unit indicated good potential for various applications in solids processing. They include continuous inspection of organic content, sulphur, chlorine, ash, and metal distribution. It is applicable for coal cleaning, ore sorting, industrial minerals, and various applications within waste cleaning and recycling. An investigation was carried out into the effect of physical parameters, such as particle size of the sample, residence time, solid/liquid ratio and impeller speed in the flotation cell, on the solubility in soft tap-water of colemanite (calcium-bearing borate) from Emet, in Turkey. Solubility increased steadily with residence time from 5 to 20 min but only minimally thereafter. There was a similar increase with impeller speed from 500 to 1 500 rev/min, beyond which a solubility of around 1.05 g/l was again established. There was a slight decline in solubility as the solid/liquid ratio was increased from 1 to 30%, with stable values around 1.05 g/l at a 20% ratio, while a sharp decrease was observed with decrease in size down to the -20 micrometre fraction. The effect of solubility should be taken into account if the application of a wet-processing method is being considered for the ore, while it can also result in losses of material during handling and storage

The production of phosphate concentrates (phosphate rock) from slimes represents a challenge to the phosphate industry worldwide. In Brazil, this challenge is particularly relevant due to the consistently low P2O5 grades and the igneous origin. The Brazilian phosphate deposits are made up mainly of apatite from alkaline chimneys, representing 80% of the Brazilian reserves; phosphorite deposits contribute 18% and the other sources (guano, phosphorous bauxite, and apatite from veins) reach 2%. The Brazilian industry beneficiates phosphate ores that are mineralogically more complex than those treated elsewhere. The low apatite grade, inherent to the igneous Brazilian ores, added to the mineralogical complexity due to the weathering of the rocks, has represented a permanent challenge to the Brazilian process engineers. The total measured, indicated and inferred reserves reach 3.2 million tonnes of ore with average grade 11% P2O5. The development of local technology for phosphate beneficiation started in the 1960’s. The first industrial experiences of producing phosphate rock from slimes (-44µm or -325#) fraction started at Arafertil, currently Bunge Fertilizantes SA, in Araxá, in the 1980’s. This production corresponds, nowadays, to 35% of the total production of concentrates in the company (830,000t/year) in a circuit consisting of desliming in 40mm microcyclones and concentration in flotation columns, corn starch and fatty acids being utilised as reagents. The performance of slimes flotation and the process control, at Bunge´s concentrator, were improved after the introduction of column flotation technology, in the first half of the nineties. The column flotation technology for slimes recovery was expanded to other Brazilian concentrators still in the nineties: Ultrafértil (Catalão – GO), Bunge (Cajati – SP), Fosfértil (Tapira – MG) and Copebrás (Catalão – GO). At present the Brazilian production of phosphate rock is approximately 4.5Mt/year, with a strong trend for a market increase. Genuinely Brazilian technology is utilised for the processing of slimes, the concentrates representing 11 to 13% of the overall production. The production of apatite concentrates from slimes was relevant to increase phosphate recovery and reduce costs, contributing to the growth of the fertilisers industry.

Titanium nitride in upgraded nitrided ilmenite (bulk of iron removed) can selectively be chlorinated to produce titanium tetrachloride. Except for iron, most other components present during this low temperature (ca. 200°C) chlorination reaction will not react with chlorine. It is therefore necessary to remove as much iron as possible from the nitrided ilmenite. Hydrochloric acid leaching is a possible process route to remove metallic iron from nitrided ilmenite without excessive dissolution of species like titanium nitride and calcium oxide. Calcium oxide dissolution results in unrecoverable acid consumption. The leachability of nitrided ilmenite in hydrochloric acid was evaluated by determining the dissolution of species like aluminium, calcium, titanium and magnesium in a batch leach reactor for 60 minutes at 90°C under reflux conditions. The hydrochloric acid concentration (11%, 18% and 25%), initial acid-to-iron mole ratio (2:1, 2.5:1 and 3.3:1), and solid-to-liquid mass ratio (1:8.33 to 1:2.13) were varied. The results indicate that a hydrochloric acid concentration of 25 wt% supplied in a 2:1 acid-to-iron mole ratio would produce the most favourable upgraded nitrided ilmenite product. The dissolution of iron in this solution reached 97 per cent after only 60 minutes. The total dissolution of calcium and titanium species was 0.01 and 0.11 wt% respectively. Hydrochloric acid can therefore be used as lixiviant to remove metallic iron from nitrided ilmenite. With the passing of Dr William Bleloch on 20th June 1991, we lost not only a colleague and a good friend but a man who made a very significant contribution to the industrial development of South Africa. He can rightly be called the father of the ekctrochemical and electro-metallurgical industries in this country, since his ideas and dedicated work were directly responsible for the development of these large industries as we know them today.

The Stawell Goldfield, the westernmost of the main Victorian fields, has produced over a million and a quarter ounces of gold from one and three-quarter million tons of ore. The lodes are quartz reefs and sulphide bodies occurring in sediments of lower Ordovician or upper Cambrian age. The lodes are confined to a relatively narrow suite of weak rocks lying between stronger ones above and below and there is a definite relationship between fold structure, pitch and strength of folding and ore.LOCATION HISTORY AND PAST PRODUCTIONThe town of Stawell, situated 150 miles north-westerly from Melbourne on the main railway and road to Adelaide, is the most westerly of the main gold areas of Victoria. Alluvial gold was found at Pleasant Creek (now Stawell West) in 1853 and the usual &quot;rush&quot; followed. Numerous alluvial leads, some surface, others buried under up to 100 ft. of Tertiary sediments were worked. The alluvial gold was soon exhausted, but in 1857 gold-bearing reefs were found on the slopes of a prominent ridge on the northern edgeof the present town. Early reef mining was by small working parties mining to shallow depths only and treating their ore at public crushing plants. Some of the early returns were very high grade. The next stage was the amalgamation of claims and the formation of companies, with their own treatment plants. This stage continued till the last mine closed in 1921. These companies had, by present standards, small holdings and far too many shafts were sunk, resulting in less efficient prospecting and operation.Since 1921 there have been one or two small scale attempts to revive mining but without success. Stoppings are required to resist lateral forces on the face of the structure to control pressure differentials created by ventilating air. The design criteria in other parts of the world, including Australia, exceed this requirement by specifying over pressurization control to as much as 14 kPa (2 psi) in the active sections and 35 kPa (5 psi) in the main ventilating control areas. This is done to provide protection to the mine workers from explosive or air blast events within the mine that can create this over pressurization. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting research to develop a new testing protocol for rating mine ventilation stoppings. The premise of this work is that arch-loading conditions more accurately reflects the transverse load capabilities of stoppings in underground coal mines than the freestanding flexural strength test specified in the current Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). This work clearly shows that the transverse load capabilities of dry-stacked, mine ventilation stoppings are dependent upon the material strength of the block and the height and thickness of the wall, none of which are part of the current CFR criteria based on ASTM E-72 specifications. This paper compares the transverse load capabilities of several block materials and wall dimensions commonly used in stopping constructions based upon simulated three-hinge, rigid-arch loading tests of half-wall constructions in the NIOSH Mine Roof Simulator. The results indicate a wide-range of transverse load capacities, ranging from as low as 21 kPa (0.3 psi) to as much as 117 kPa (17 psi) for the conditions evaluated in this study. The current CFR criteria do not distinguish between applications of these stopping designs despite their wide variance in transverse load capabilities, which is not conducive to employing ventilation control strategies that isolate certain sections of the mine to prevent injury to mine workers.
