"The Linear Wear Theory provides a reliable framework for the assessment of grinding media performance at full scale. This theory can be applied for analyzing grinding media consumption rates in any given grinding operation as well as the evaluation of alternative grinding media products, based on actual operational data, correcting for conditions like ore hardness, feed and product sizes, mill power and circuit throughput; all of them unrelated to the grinding media intrinsic quality attributes. A series of Moly-Cop Tools 3.0 applications have been developed to facilitate the calculations involved. Moly-Cop Tools 3.0 is available, free of charge, to all interested parties through the corresponding author.INTRODUCTION Mineral grinding circuit operators recognize the significance of grinding media (balls) consumption on the cost structure of any full scale grinding facility. The effective cost associated with this essential consumable depends on two factors: delivered price and durability (quality) of the grinding media. When evaluating alternative grinding media varieties, there is a well accepted evaluation criterion by which a given media type is considered to be “cost-effective” when its unit application cost – normally expressed in $/ton of ore ground – is shown to be lower than that of a nominal reference condition: Grinding Media Cost = Ball Price x Ball Consumption (1) ($ /ton ground) ($/ton balls) (ton balls/ton ground) Under this criterion, an alternative, higher-price grinding media product could be “cost-effective” if its associated consumption rate is sufficiently lower than the reference media, enough to yield a lower grinding cost, as dictated by Equation 1. For the proper application of the above criterion, evaluators must rely on representative indicators of grinding media quality, ideally independent of most mill operating conditions. In each particular case, ball price is always a known component; however, it is not so evident how media performance (quality) differences amongst alternative product types could be assessed with a reasonable degree of accuracy and precision."

The semi-solid metal casting process results in a unique solidification path. The microstructural features that were identified during the characterization of the as-cast microstructure, were used as evidence of the process history in order to determine the solidification path followed during the evolution of the microstructure. The morphology of the grains was characterized using SEM and the extent and distribution of the elemental segregation within the grain structure was analysed using EDS. Falls of ground have historically been the main cause for fatalities in underground mines. Although recent advances in technology have reduced the number of such accidents, when failures occur they usually result in severe consequences. Risks of rock falls, use of heavy machinery and electrical apparatus, entry to confined spaces, working in noisy and dusty environments, and working on unstable platforms are some of the hazards in ground control operations. Managing these risks requires a management regime involving strict adherence to operational codes of practice and an enshrined culture of safety. These should be subsequently reinforced through active participation of management, systematic training, and stringent internal and third party auditing. Accident reports show that the major contributing factor in most rock fall accidents is the failure to adequately manage known risks due to the lack of a systematic process. OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series) is an international occupational health and safety management standard specification to develop occupational health and safety at the workplace. This standard is intended to help mine operators control occupational health and safety risks. Addressing the requirements of OHSAS 18001 can be a complex and demanding task. A comprehensive guide for efficient and accurate implementation of this standard is provided in this paper. The discipline can be used to establish an accountable management system foreground control activities in underground coal mines. The paper also provides guidelines for preparing necessary documents, devising safety policies, procedures, performing risk assessment, and handling instructions. Finally, the paper concludes by providing a sound analytical basis in terms of the creation of a robust safety management system foreground control operations in underground mines. Full benefits of implementing an effective and systematic operational health and safety management system are illustrated. The procedure adopted and prescribed in this paper can be used in all underground coal mines where lack of appropriate ground control practices can create deficiencies in both safety and productivity.

A study of the mechanics of shear failure of rock under pressure has been made. The transition from brittle to ductile failure occurs when the friction along the fracture surfaces exceeds the shear strength of the rock. A machine has been developed for measuring both the shear strength of rock and the friction along rock fracture surfaces. In this shear machine, the fractures are forced along definite planes; as a result, the rock is stronger than in compression tests where the fractures choose the weakest paths through the specimens. Friction is composed of several forces: (1) the forces to slide irregulurities on surfaces over each other; (2) forces to shear some of these irregularities; (3) molecular attractions across the fractures; and (4) forces required to break bonds resulting from melting and welding at the tips of irregularities on the surfaces. Friction along rock fracture surfaces is not proportional to contact pressure as usually assumed; instead, it increases as the contact pressure raised to the 0.4 to 0.8 power. INTRODUCTION It is difficult to produce tensile stresses under the high compressive stresses present in the earth; therefore, in deep drilling and geological faulting, shear failure predominates. This shear failure mechanism is complicated because rock is a heterogeneous material containing pore spaces, microfractures, elastic discontinuities and other imperfections. A study of shear failure of rock under pressure has been made to obtain a better understanding of this complex mechanism. A machine has been developed and used to measure the shear strength of rock and friction along sheared surfaces. This machine has certain advantages over the compression test — shear properties can be measured under low normal stresses and shear stress and normal stress can be varied independently. The first part of this paper is a description of shear failure of rock under pressure. The role of shear strength and friction along fracture surfaces in the shear failure mechanism will be discussed. The second part consists of a description of the shear machine and a discussion of the shear strength and friction data obtained using this machine. It will be shown that shear strength depends upon the size of the stressed zone, and that friction does not increase linearly with contact pressure as usually assumed. Attempts are made to relate some of the new concepts to tectonic failure and to dril ling. The mining sector is a major economic driver for Canadian, and British Columbian communities. In parallel strong commitments have been made by industry to the well-being and sustainability of associated communities. However, these dimensions are the least understood. Especially lacking are focused regional investigations that compare the well-being and sustainability of communities dependent on different resources sectors. It is hypothesized that this type of comparative analysis will help to foster a greater understanding of what makes a resource or mining community healthy and sustainable. This paper describes research that examined community-level indicators associated with well-being (e.g. education, income and employment) and sustainability (e.g. economic diversity). The indicators were derived from Canadian Census data for 31 British Columbia resource-based communities (with a focus on mining) during a period of time (1991 to 2001) when resource sectors experienced an economic downturn. Our findings identify that during this decade, mining communities differed significantly from other resource-based communities, and comparative analysis of census derived indictors illuminate challenges that mining communities in British Columbia face with respect to wellbeing and sustainability (such as economic diversity, unemployment, and population loss). To contribute to the mining sector?s efforts towards meeting their commitments to communities, this paper concludes by proposing strategic opportunities aimed at the enhancement of mining community sustainability for policy-makers, communities, and the mining industry to consider.

INTRODUCTION Measurement of certain data associated with nuclear testing necessitates the reception of waves at the instrument location which are unaffected by reflection off internal structures or tunnel surfaces. Therefore, in order to provide necessary facilities for the fielding of experiments in support of the underground nuclear testing program, the Defense Nuclear Agency (DNA) commissioned a cost and feasibility evaluation pertaining to the design and construction of large underground cavities in Rainier Mesa. The effort included research into past experience pertaining to the excavation and support of large underground caverns, assessment of the geological conditions which exist in Rainier Mesa, preliminary design of the chambers and their rock support systems based upon the geological setting, development of mining plans for the excavation of the caverns, and estimation of the cost and manpower schedule to complete construction. This paper summarizes the results of the feasibility evaluation. The investigation was limited to modified hemispherical configurations ranging in size from 24.4 to 91.4 m (80 to 300 ft) in diameter. Two cavity support systems were considered. The first employs internally installed rockbolts as the means of primary rock support while the second involves the use of annular tendon galleries located above the chambers from which primary support members are introduced prior to general excavation. The internal support configuration was considered for cavities with spans of 24.4, 36.6, 48.8, and 54.9 m (80, 120, 160, and 180 ft) while the external support configuration was considered for cavities with spans of 54.9, 73.2, and 91.4 m (180, 240 and 300 ft).

Information on total estimated uranium reserves and domestic requirements have been collected, A survey has been made on the possibilities of recovery of uranium from low grade and complex ore deposits, e.g., marine phosphorites, shales, coal, sea water, etc. In order to assess the potential for uranium recovery from uraniferous phosphorites, available thermodynamic data of uranium minerals, compounds and aqueous species have been collected. The existence of uranium complexes with chloride, fluoride, carbonate, phosphate, sulfate, etc., in ground waters have been evaluated at different pH's. There seems a great need to study the relative stability of these complexes in order to judge the applicability of solution mining technology for selective leaching of uranium from phosphorites. A typical flow-sheet demonstrating recovery of uranium from wet-process phosphoric acid has been included in this report. Some essential features of the economics of uranium recovery from uraniferous phosphorites have been briefly considered and recommendation have been made for further studies.

"In flotation practice, a good recovery of minerals largely depends on the degree to which the valuable minerals have been liberated from the associated gangue during the grinding process. Therefore, a regular measurement of the degree of liberation can provide data for the assessment of the quality of separation and predicts the effect of changes in the grinding-classifying circuit on flotation process. Generally, the standard procedure for measuring the degree of liberation requires the preparation of polished sections - a time consuming operation that also has the disadvantage of providing an overestimated number of free particles because of the stereological nature of produced samples.The present work is an alternative approach to avoid these miscalculations and establish a system of control for fluorite flotation plants. The system deals no only with the state of liberation but also the dynamic behavior of individuals particles and mineral components within the grinding-classifying and flotation circuits. It involves methods such as sieving, x-ray diffraction analysis, study of polished sections and microscopic counting of preliminarily sieved minerals particles from a fluorite processing plant, randomly dispersed on a glass slide, but not embedded in a resin mounting medium. If a complete information on the textural properties of minerals in the ore (including its mineral components distribution) can be obtained through x-ray diffraction analysis and study of polished sections, the microscopic counting is used to determinate with enough accuracy the mineral liberation, estimate the grade of fluorite ore and products, determinate the deportment and approximate recovery of individuals particles and mineral components within the investigated circuit. For a count of 100-1000 particles in each n-size range, the counting method was found to be a particularly reliable and less time consuming operation that could substitute the chemical analysis of fluorite ore for an estimate of the grade:"

The Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Co.(CC&V) celebrated completion of a two-year, $168.5-million expansion and capital improvement program. An open house celebration was held in the historic mining town of Victor, CO on Oct. 4, 2002. Hundreds of townspeople, the press and other invited guests from the mining industry joined the employees of CC&V in the celebration. The event included mine tours, company displays and a barbecue picnic, complete with a country and western band. The Cresson Mine is located about 40 km (25miles) west of Colorado Springs, CO between the towns of Cripple Creek and Victor. The mine is the only large-scale gold mining operation in Colorado and now employs about 300 (ME, October 2001, pp.21-28). The operation is a joint venture between Anglo-Gold (Colorado) (67%), based in Greenwood Village, CO, and Golden Cycle Gold (33%), based in Colorado Springs. CC&V is managed by AngloGold North America. AngloGold North America is the U.S. subsidiary of AngloGold, the world’s second largest gold mining producer. AngloGold is based in Johannesburg, South Africa.

"Two areas are involved in the research work of the comminution process (crushing and grinding). The first one involves the changes of the size class distribution values that are definded by the differential equations in the function of the ore property and working conditions. The second area involves the comminution of the different levels in order to optimize the working parameters and to decrease the operational costs in the grinding process.We have studied, in detail, the possibility of functioning the crusher at the maximal loading, over 4500 kN, ball mills with diameters larger than 5.0 m and semiautogenous mills with diameters larger than 10.0 m.Using the computers, we have achieved the maximal loading range of the crusher, over Fc ? 4500 kN in the crushing process. In the grinding process, using the adequate differential equations in the automation process, we have established the correlation between the pulp mass capacity in the mill, pulp dencity, ore fineness in the pulp and recirculating ore charge.With the appopriate text, equations and graphs, this paper shows the results of our several years research work in the laboratory and in the ore comminution plant of Majdanpek Copper Mine."

This new potential results from greater availability of power; lower freight rates on alumina and aluminum; good market prospects for the metal, including western aluminum market expansion following a decline in defense requirements in the 1950's; and possibility of developing bauxite deposits in the Pacific Basin as well as other mineral resources. The growing demand for energy during the post World War I and World War II periods has prompted underground coal production to increase rapidly. This has been met primarily by mine mechanization, resulting in the development and application of new mining machine types. Correspondingly, the total connected horsepower of each machine as well as the number employed has enlarged rapidly since 1950. (2,3,9,14,16,17) Electrical consumption for each mine has also grown. In the early years of mining electrical applications, only d-c power was utilized underground. Yet, d-c machine limitations were soon realized, and many a-c systems were substituted to permit economic and efficient utilization of a-c distribution and motors. Due to the attractive torque characteristics, ease of distribution and speed control, several traction applications have continued to be powered by d-c motors. The result has been the now prevalent use of mixed a-c/d-c mine power. However, augmented electrical power employment seems to have added to underground coal mining electrical accidents.

"ABSTRACTThe design of drilled shafts often incorporates large factors of safety, for which settlements under service loads are highly influenced by the initial elastic stiffness. In the case of groups of drilled shafts with typical spacing, the elastic shaft-soil-shaft interaction dominates the behavior even for loads close to the bearing capacity, for which the initial stiffness is a key parameter in the design. This paper describes typical trends in results obtained by means of different approaches currently available in the literature for the evaluation of the initial stiffness of a single shaft. An experimental technique that provides a rapid and inexpensive means for the evaluation of the initial stiffness is described, and the results obtained for typical cases are compared with analytical predictions.IntroductionThe behavior of drilled shafts under axial loads is generally governed by the initial stiffness, as the factors of safety considered in design are often large, due to a superposition of conservative assumptions on soil properties and expected loads. In the case of shaft groups, the initial elastic stiffness plays a major role together with the elastic group effects, as nonlinearities tend to localize around the shafts and have a lesser effect than elastic deformations on adjacent elements (e.g., Leung et al., 2010). An accurate characterization of the initial stiffness is thus warranted for the analysis of drilled shafts and shaft groups under service loads.Initial stiffness of shafts may be estimated on the basis of soil stiffness and structural properties of the element by means of numerical methods (e.g., Pinto and Prato, 2006), as well as analytical methods (e.g., Randolph and Wroth, 1978). The soil stiffness may be determined by means of geophysical tests (e.g., Spectral Analysis of Surface Waves, SASW, Stokoe et al., 1994), or correlations with Standar Penetration Test (SPT) blowcounts or Cone Penetration Test (CPT) resistances (e.g., Sabatini et al., 2002).The initial stiffness may also be measured on drilled shafts by means of load tests. Static load tests (SLT), however, have some limitations on measuring small deflections, for which the initial stiffness is often extrapolated by means of large strain measurements (e.g., Chin, 1970), where the SLT measurements are more accurate."

"PID loops – also known as base layers or regulatory controls – form the foundation of any plant’s control layer and it is generally accepted that PID loop health has a direct impact on the plant’s bottom line. Keeping these thousands of control loops in good health has a direct impact on the plant’s bottom line: it reduces variability, improves quality and throughput, and decreases energy costs and raw material usage. This has been well proven and documented in many articles. In the last ten years, technology has evolved: control engineers can now keep track of control loop performance and link it to the root causes of variability. However, they lack industry-wide best practices and criteria for determining what can be considered as excellent, good, fair, or poor performance. To ensure that PID control loops continue to perform well and meet their objectives, control engineers need a combination of (a) an appropriate monitoring technology and (b) best practices for doing the maintenance of base layer controls.Most plants have limited resources and operate with an increasing number of constraints; therefore, using the right tools and including reports in daily workflow is key for success. This paper suggests roles and responsibilities of key players needed to work toward control performance best practices and discuss organisational changes to succeed.INTRODUCTIONAlthough PID controllers are reliable workhorses in the process industry, they are often underrated. Since the 1980’s, computer control has evolved and the control algorithms used by control engineers have become increasingly complex. However, PID controllers still handle over 90% of the control loops in operating plants. Table 1 shows the savings that can be realized by achieving best-practice in several different process control categories (Brisk, 2004). The savings are expressed as a percentage of production costs."

The history of mining education, like the history of the mining industry, is typified by “boom and bust” cycles. In academia, the perpetual problem can be stated as “too many graduates for the jobs or too many jobs for the graduates.” The deep “bust cycle” that spanned the 1990s through 2003 spawned renewed efforts to eliminate, consolidate, restructure, rename, reinvent or otherwise change mining education to make it (for some) more fiscally or socially acceptable. During this period, a number of mining programs were eliminated, and by the late 1990s senior people in academia and their counter-parts in industry became increasing concerned about the very real possibility that strategic disciplines may disappear altogether. As a result, the Mining and Metallurgy Society of America (MMSA) created an educational committee to explore how industry could help preserve key programs necessary to provide future professionals. Several meetings were held to assess the problems and look for solutions. In 2004, this effort culminated in the first of the “Engineering Education” sessions to be held at the SME Annual Meetings. In response to the information presented in this first meeting, Marc LeVier (then president of MMSA) invited a number of the participants to reconvene the following day. An action plan was formulated and a task force was organized. To more fully represent all industry sectors, SME later that year assumed the sponsorship role for the task force.

A procedure was required for the rapid determination of silicon in low-alloy irons and a suitable method used the formation and reduction of silicomolybdic acid at 50°C. The procedure gives results for elemental silicon and this enables the correct computation of oxidation requirements in basic oxygen steelmaking. The method could be useful in iron foundries which have not installed direct reading spectrometers.INTRODUCTIONOxygen steelmaking experiments required rapid determinations of 0,5-1,6 per cent silicon in iron (3-4 per cent C) within 10 min of sampling; a reproducibility better than ±0.03 per cent Si was desired. Only elemental silicon (Si°) is of interest as a fuel in basic oxygen steelmaking technology, and the proposed procedure determines exclusively this form of silicon. The method is described as it may prove useful to other workers although the interference study would be incomplete for some applications.The analysis of silicon in iron is frequently obtained using direct reading spectrometers, but for the proposed experiments the spectrometers could not be used because of the prohibitive distance from the furnace. It should be noted that spectrometers determine both the elemental silicon and that present as silicon dioxide in occluded slag and inclusions.The silicon content of iron and steel is determined in this laboratory by spectrophotometric measurement of a "molybdenum blue" colour. The history of zinc production in Australia is outlined including attempts to make zinc electrolytically at Cockle Creek, N.S.W. in the last century, the use of horizontal retorts at Cockle Creek and Port Pirie, South Australia, production by electrolysis at Risdon, Tasmania and at Port Pirie using zinc oxide fumed from lead blast furnace slag and production by the Imperial Smelting process at Cockle Creek. Developments in the electrolytic process are described including those in roasting, acid manufacture, leaching, purification, electrolysis, melting and casting. The Imperial Smelting process technology is also outlined. In both processes global technology is reviewed, including important Australian contributions.
