State and Federal construction specifications require the Blasting Contractor to prepare a Master Blasting Plan which is reviewed by the Owner’s Representative. The Master Blasting Plan requires the Contractor to submit the design of a typical blast. Most blasting specifications also require the Blasting Contractor to submit Daily Blasting Plans. The Master Blasting Plan and the Daily Blasting Plan require that the Blasting Contractor also submit the types and quantities of explosives and initiators used. The specifications also request that the Blasting Contractor submit the pounds of explosive used per delay for both production and presplit blasts. The Blasting Contractor may also be required to predict the anticipated ground vibration and air overpressure levels for the proposed blasts. There are equations that can be used to predict the ground vibration. There are also equations that can be used to predict the air overpressure levels. The data for these equations were primarily derived from quarry and surface coal mine and some construction blasts. Data from major construction projects were analyzed in this study to determine new air overpressure propagation equations for construction blasting. These new prediction equations compare calculated results analyzed from field data with other existing air overpressure prediction equations. A 6-ft. diameter laboratory tunnel, raise and shaft boring machine was designed and constructed to carry out research investigations to enhance the performance of mechanical rock excavation equipment. The machine is operated with a computer control system and features extensive instrumentation to monitor and record various test parameters, including tri-axial cutter forces, machine thrust, torque, rpm and penetration rate. An extensive laboratory testing Program has been conducted using this machine, demonstrating the feasibility of attaining high rates of penetration in various sedimentary geologies. Also, a large data base has been developed to serve as a basis for the improved design and performance of tunnel, raise and shaft boring equipment.

"Laterite ore processed by the Ambatovy Joint Venture in Madagascar is primarily limonitic in nature, containing about 40 to 45 wt.% Fe and 1.1 wt.% Ni. The process selected for treatment of this ore considered the behavior and deportment of iron in each step of the commercial flowsheet. Such considerations included nickel and cobalt recoveries, reagent consumptions, liquid-solid separation characteristics, and both intermediate and final product purities. In this paper, the results for the first three years of commercial operation at Ambatovy are compared with the design parameters, with emphasis on the behavior of iron.INTRODUCTION The main component of nickeliferous laterite ore is iron, and the Ambatovy deposit in Madagascar is no exception. The Ambatovy ore is primarily limonitic in nature, containing about 40 to 45 wt.% Fe and 1.1 wt.% Ni. Since the nickel content of the ore is roughly one fortieth that of iron, successful recovery of nickel depends on close control of the behavior of iron in the selected process. Exploration of the Ambatovy area, which is located to the east of Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar, dates back to 1960, when the Malagasy Service Géologique carried out a limited pitting and auger-drilling program. Phelps Dodge Corporation (now Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, Inc.) was granted the mining rights to the property in 1995 and carried out significant resource definition, environmental assessment and engineering studies between 1995 and 2001 (Chou, Rooke, Williams, & Hanks, 2000). In 2003, Dynatec Corporation, which was formed in 1997 by the merger of Dynatec International Ltd. and Sherritt International Consultants Inc., signed a joint venture agreement with subsidiaries of Phelps Dodge to evaluate the Ambatovy Nickel Project. Dynatec then became extensively involved in the development of the project, including process selection and pilot plant testing in Fort Saskatchewan (Collins et al., 2004, 2005, 2009; Collins & Vardill, 2005). Dynatec acquired 100% of the project in 2005 and a joint venture between Dynatec, Sumitomo Corporation, Korea Resources Corporation (KORES), and SNC-Lavalin Inc. (SLI) was formed shortly thereafter to provide funding for further development. SLI was responsible for engineering, procurement and construction management of the commercial facilities. Sherritt International Corporation reacquired Dynatec Corporation, including 40% ownership in the Ambatovy Nickel Project, in 2007. The current Ambatovy Joint Venture consists of an integrated nickel and cobalt mining, processing, refining and marketing enterprise between subsidiaries of Sherritt (40% owner and mine and plant operator), Sumitomo Corporation (32.5% owner) and KORES (27.5% owner)."

This annual report deals with four distinct tasks related to research on the safety and reliability of mine electrical power systems. Task one is to develop tests and the associated instrumentation to detect incipient faults on a mine or any low-voltage power system. Task two is a dual effort related to the digital prediction of electrical transients on mine power systems and laboratory testing of transient suppression devices. Task three is also a dual effort. This task consists of both theoretical and laboratory work to assess both the reliability and the fail-safe characteristics of several items of protective equipment used in mine power systems. Task four consists of an effort to use programmable calculators and/or computer terminals to check overcurrent protective device coordination.

Periodic dilute sulphuric acid treatment ofstill, batch-fed, molassesenriched, microaerobic, manganese-dioxide-Ieaching microbial cultures led to marked improvements over untreated cultures. Percentage Mn++ recoveries increased (7X), rate of Mn++ formation improved (3X) and yields of Mn++ per molasses use were more economical (5 X). The yield in terms of molasses used improved with decreasing sugar used (eg 1.17 g Mn++/gram molasses at 0.2 per cent molasses (w/v) feed and 24 per cent (w/v) pulp density MnO2 tailings). The most effective Mn++ leaching in terms ofpercentage recovery (97 per cent) and rate ofleaching (46 mg Mn++/day) was at 0.5 per cent molasses (w/v) and 14 per cent pulp density (w/v) MnO2 tailings.

"The anionic flotation of a high-iron phosphate ore from Agrium - Kapuskasing Phosphate Operations was investigated through batch flotation tests in the presence of soda ash. The flotation data were supplemented by titration of the flotation pulp with soda ash, analysis of process water chemistry, and determination of the mineralogical composition of the ore. The results of lab tests were applied to the flotation circuit design allowing the flotation plant to efficiently process problematic ores. Process control measures (pH, conductivity) were also developed.Calcium cations and sulfate anions were identified as the dominant ions present in the process water when the difficult-to-process ores are beneficiated in the flotation plant. The concentrations of calcium and sulfate ions were consistent with the presence of a small amount of a calcium sulfate mineral in the ore although an oxidation/weathering process of iron sulfide minerals present in the ore could also be responsible for the observed water chemistry and subsequent flotation problems with the ores. The latter possibility suggests that the long-term stockpiling of such ores may have a highly negative impact on the flotation process.The role of soda ash in the flotation circuit is to precipitate metal cations from the pulp thus allowing the tall oil-based collector to selectively interact with the phosphate components.INTRODUCTIONPhosphorus minerals are the main source of this element for the production of fertilizers, and the froth flotation process is the most important technology for beneficiating phosphate ores. The flotation concentrate from Agrium-Kapuskasing Phosphate Operations (KPO) is transported to Redwater Fertilizer Operations in Alberta (also operated by Agrium) where the phosphate concentrate is converted into a phosphate fertilizer and other important chemical products. The KPO phosphate ores differ widely in mineralogy and phosphate grades, and are broadly divided on-site into three classes. The easy-to-float A-type ores do not pose any major flotation problems, but the B-type and “marginal” ores, which are quite common in the KPO igneous phosphate deposit, are not always readily-floatable using the current reagent suites and process parameters (pulp density, feed particle size, pH). In fact, marginal ores are presently considered impossible to process by flotation. A-type ores contain normally more than 15% P2O5 and less than 8% ferric oxide equivalent (Fe2O3). B-type ores are approximately of the same P2O5 grades as A-type ores but their iron content may reach 30% Fe2O3. Any material containing less than 15% P2O5 is rejected as waste rock."

"CVRD’s Department of Development and Technology – GETEK has been developing and perfecting a general methodology for scaling up flotation and grinding circuits over several years. This methodology has been applied in several prospective CVRD mining projects. It encompasses a procedure for variability analysis based on bench scale tests, pilot scale grinding and flotation tests and modeling and simulation for scaling up the industrial flowsheet.The bench scale tests include the determination of the Work Index, simplified DWT tests, rougher flotation and locked-cycle tests with samples that are representative of the ore body variability. After completion of these studies, continuous, pilot-scale flotation tests are carried out at a Mini Pilot Plant with drill core samples representative of different stages of the mine life. Finally, studies are carried out with large volume samples using a conventional grinding and flotation pilot plant. This sample is also used for liberation characterization, grinding kinetics, flotation kinetics and industrial circuit scale up. This methodology has been successfully employed in the development of CVRD’s new mining projectINTRODUCTIONCVRD has been developing and perfecting a general methodology for scaling up flotation and grinding circuits over several years. The definition of the processing route and the sizing and scale up of the processing system are some of the products generated during the pre-feasibility of a greenfield project. This paper is focused on the scale up of grinding and flotation circuits, operations known to be of the most importance in a mineral processing plant.The methodology for the definition of the flotation and grinding circuits is divided in the following stages: bench scale ore variability studies, pilot plant operation and modeling followed by simulation. The product of this work is a calibrated simulator that can be utilized for plant operation as well as mine planning, looking to achieve optimal operational conditions.The current models used for scale up of the grinding circuits are aimed at the generating information about the size distribution of the circuit product. However, it is well known that the liberation state of these products may be of critical importance for the performance of the concentration processes downstream. Nevertheless, CVRD has been developing a methodology for liberation kinetics during grinding, aimed at optimizing grinding circuit throughput together with downstream flotation recovery."

A new method of recycling aluminum dross for preparation Al-Si-Ti alloy was studied in this paper. This was carried out in two processes. first the aluminum doss was pretreated by leaching and calcining process, the fine purity and phase of the intermediate oxide powder up to electrolysis demands, then, could be obtained when aluminum dross after washing have been leached for 2h at 100? in 20% hydrochloric acid and calcined for 2h at 1200?, which was treated by cryoite-based molten salt electrolysis. Finally, the Al-Si-Ti alloy was successfully obtained through electrochemical co-deposition in the cathode shows a typical as-cast microstructure. This new recycling method can produce high quality alloy and may bring remarkable economic and social benefits.

THE OUTPUT ff the mineral industry in 1964 in both non-Communist and Communist Europe showed an upward trend for most countries in keeping with the higher index of overall industrial production. Comparable indexes of mineral industry production for non-Communist and Communist Europe (including the U.S.S.R. in Asia) are not available, primarily because the U.S.S.R. does not report details of its industrial production by industrial sectors. However, available data both in the form of index numbers on production published by the United Nations and based on data as reported to the United Nations by the various countries, and actual production data for selected major commodities published by the various European countries reflect generally expanded output by both the extractive sector and the processing sector of the mineral industry in most of the 26 nations of Europe.

This publication presents a study by the Federal Bureau of Mines of 494 accidents in open-pit iron-ore mines, beneficiation plants, and shops of the Lake Superior district from March 1949 to June 1956. These accidents caused 499 lost-time injuries, including 12 fatalities. A similar Bureau publication, Information Circular 7744, Analysis of 346 Accidents, Underground Iron-Ore Mines, Lake Superior District, was published in April 1956. Accident reports were analyzed by the Bureau to show the causes of in-juries and the unsafe practices or conditions that caused the accidents. Also shown are the time charges, times of occurrence, ages of the injured by job classification, and experience of the injured in mines and on the job being performed when hurt. Detailed information is presented on approximately 27 percent of the total number of disabling accidents that occurred in open-pit iron-ore mines, beneficiation plants, and shops in the district during the period covered. The text also contains tabulations of the accident experience and graphs with straight-line injury-frequency, injury-severity, and fatality trends for the period 1946-57.

One of the problems that is occasionally encountered during the continuous casting of DIN 1.4003 stainless steel (hereafter referred to as 1.4003) is the side bulging effect, a problem that is generally prevalent in ferritic stainless steels. This occurs because the unconstrained narrow sides of the solidification shell are not able to withstand the ferrostatic pressure once the strand has emerged from the mould. Coupled with side bulging, there is strand width variation at high temperatures, i.e. when the steel is in the ferrite-austenite dual phase region. Both of these dimensional changes to the slab profile create some processing problems in subsequent hot rolling operations when unacceptable width variations are encountered. The strength of the solidification shell and its ability to withstand the ferrostatic pressure during continuous casting is dependent on its thickness and phase composition when exiting from the mould up to a few metres downstream. From the study of the high temperature metallurgical behaviour of this steel, it was observed that a thicker solidification shell when exiting from the mould and a higher austenite volume fraction in the steel would be favourable for the reduction of the side bulging effect during continuous casting. It was also found that as long as the d-ferrite to austenite phase ratio keeps fluctuating due to variations in chemical composition and process control in the dual phase region from cast to cast, the strand width variation problem would probably persist. The remedy to this effect lies in more strict chemical composition and process control during continuous casting of this steel. The hot ductility experiments revealed that 1.4003 exhibits good hot ductility in the strand straightening temperature range with a minimum of 75 per cent reduction in area and this was attributed to the high volume fraction of ferrite (0.2 to 0.4) in the steel. This would provide a remedy to side bulging by increasing the secondary cooling rate of the strand in order to form a thicker solidification shell without necessarily risking transverse cracking and other surface defects during unbending. ABSTRACT: Determining tunnel stability is a key issue during preliminary site investigation. In contrast, problems of excavatability have been largely ignored. While the choice of an economic tunnelling method is admittedly a clear priority in the planning stage, special investigations focus-sing on rock fragmentation (e.g. drilling or cutting performance, rock mass blastability or tool wear) are rarely carried out. This paper explores possibilities to quantify key parameters for rock mass excavatability in drilling, blasting and cutting by TBMs and roadheaders. RÉSUMÉE: La détermination de la stabilité du tunnel est une question clé lors des études prélimi-naires. En revanche, les problèmes d'excavabilité sont souvent en grande partie ignorés. Tandis que le choix d'une méthode de percement économique est évidemment une priorité claire dans l'étape de planification, des investigations spéciales se concentrant sur la fragmentation de la roche (par exemple le comportement de la roche au forage, à l’excavation ou au dynamitage et l’usure des outil) sont rarement effectuées. Cet article explore les possibilités pour quantifier les paramè-tres clé de la roche lors d’excavation par forage, dynamitage, au tunnelier (TBMs) ou à l’excavatrice. Während der Wahl einer wirtschaftlichen Vortriebsmethode während der Planungsphase meist noch eine gewisse Priorität beigemessen wird, werden spezielle Untersuchungen zur Gebirgslösung (Bohr- oder Schneidbarkeit, Sprengbarkeit oder Werkzeugverbrauch) nur sehr selten durchgeführt. Diese Publikation zeigt Möglichkeiten der Quantifizierung von Schlüsselparametern für die Gebirgslösbarkeit auf, also der Bohr- und Sprengbarkeit, der Fräsbarkeit mit Teilschnittmaschinen und der Schneidbarkeit mit TBMs.

The paper presents sensitivity analysis for a dynamic model of submerged arc silicon furnaces. The model we study, called ?Simod?, was developed by Elkem in cooperation with NTNU and Sintef. It is today a much used tool in Elkem for operator training and analysis of the dynamic behaviour of the silicon production process. The aim of our work is to bring the simulator tool closer to industrial practice, and construct a mechanism to adapt the model to the behaviour of a running process, online. The paper presents the results of the sensitivity analysis that has been undertaken for important parameters in the Simod model. The parameters associated with the process inputs are electric power loss, loss of fixed C and reactivity of carbon. The output signals that have been investigated are fed quartz, tapped silicon and silica. The paper also interprets the results of the sensitivity analysis in a process operation context.

(Malcolm Gladwell) The mining industry is a crucial provider for virtually every person?s needs and thus indispensable. Yet, mining is a complex and risky business: plenty of high risk factors can occur and severely affect nature and the miner?s life and health. Especially for small and medium enterprises (SME) risks may also threaten the economic existence of the company. The responsible and sustainable management of a company should thus be based upon the systematic finding and handling of risks or briefly upon an efficient risk management system. Why do we need risk management? Because nobody is perfect and we make mistakes in the normal course of operation.

Better slag valorization is part of improving the sustainability of steel, stainless steel and non- ferrous metal production processes. Besides, it can improve the sustainability of other products and production processes as well. A sound and well established slag valorization is beneficial for the overall economics, marketing and appreciation of the metallurgical process and its products. On 6-7 April 2009, the First International Slag Valorisation Symposium was held in Leuven, Belgium. This paper gives a brief summary of the symposium, providing an overview of slag valorization opportunities. The authors believe that high temperature process slags can have interesting applications and that within the next 10 to 20 years slags will need such valorization options in order to compete with other materials and get general support for further production. On the other hand, the authors also expect a higher demand for slags for the production of various materials. High temperature processes should anticipate on the growing opportunities for valorization of slags and increase the resilience of their process by better understanding slag processing, slag quality and material requirements. More interdisciplinary research efforts are required to reach this level of knowledge for the different high temperature processes. Such an interdisciplinary research platform was recently established at KULeuven, Belgium, named SMART-PRO2 (Sustainable Materialization of Residues from Thermal Processes into Products).

Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the international seabed area (Area) and its resources are the common heritage of humanity (CHH). Patent rights can be incompatible with the CHH doctrine and its underlying principles because patent holders might charge unjustifiably high prices to license patented technology for exploring and exploiting the Area’s resources (creating a "patent holdup" situation), might choose not to license, or might license exclusively when doing so would contravene CHH principles. However, a reasonable patent licensing regime can contribute to sharing the benefits derived from the Area and promote environmental sustainability. Provisions of the UNCLOS that stipulated compulsory technology and financial transfers were removed in the 1994 Agreement relating to the Implementation of Part XI of the UNCLOS but to promote equity and sustainability I propose a voluntary licensing regime modeled on the concept of reasonable and non-discriminatory patent licensing that has been used in other contexts. The International Seabed Authority or another entity will need to coordinate and promote this licensing regime through governance of intellectual property derived from the Area. This proposed approach can better effectuate the CHH doctrine and its underlying principles.

To develop more accurate means of measuring low ventilating air velocities in underground mines to facilitate compliance with ventilation standards. The Approach: A commercially available vane anemometer which produces an electrical, rather than a mechanical, output was coupled to electronic circuitry to produce the Bureau's Digital Low Velocity Anemometer (see photo). [ ] How It Works: The experimental instrument has a vane anemometer head which produces an electrical output signal with a frequency directly proportional to the rotating speed of the vane anemometer shaft. The commercially available ABBIRKO FLOWMASTER anemometer head was used in this instrument. In the signal conditioning circuits the electrical signal from the anemometer is converted into pulses, which are counted during either 3-second or 1-minute intervals, depending on the position of the operator's control switch. (Readout is either "instantaneous" or averaged for a period of one minute.) The number of pulses counted is then translated (integrated and divided by a constant) in the logic circuits to get average speed. Average air velocity in feet per minute is displayed in illuminated digits. (See simplified diagram of circuitry.)

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is defined as ‘The goods and services that support the electronic display, processing, storage and transmission of information’. Early in 2002 the South African Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) commissioned a study into the diffusion and adoption of ICT in eight sectors of the economy. The platinum mining Sector was one of these. The key findings presented in this paper are based on the platinum sector component of that study. The paper examines the theoretical basis behind technology transfer and innovation diffusion and presents the results of an ICT diffusion survey carried out in the South African platinum mining sector. ICT is shown as the modern day technological tool which is an accelerator of economic development. The current state of ICT diffusion in the platinum mining sector is defined and projections for the near future are given. Recommendations which will ensure smooth and full adoption are presented and justified.
