In response to Public Law 95-87 (SMCRA), Colorado promulgated regulations governing the mining of Coal. These regulations require the prediction, monitoring and mitigation of "material damage" caused by subsidence. All permitted underground coal mines within Colorado have approved subsidence programs. Preliminary monitoring results indicate the subsidence mechanical predictions have been sufficiently accurate to preclude material subsidence damage. The State of Colorado has developed a practical approach to regulating subsidence, which stresses monitoring verification of predicted subsidence phenomena. However, shortcomings exist in our ability to precisely predict the secondary consequences of subsidence, including effects to structures, the hydrologic balance and the environment. Lack of accuracy in predicting these secondary consequences results in uncertainty, necessitating conservatism in permitting. To avoid increasingly stringent permit restrictions, future research should emphasize the secondary consequences of subsidence.

"The Rietveld numerical method was used to calculate the relative abundances of phases in both synthetic binary mixtures and synthetic and natural ores, using X-ray diffraction data. The results were compared with those of image analysis and a chemical method. The ranges of the relative errors were estimated. The Rietveld method is found to be acceptable for determining the abundances of major and minor phases and the amorphous component of partially crystalline samples. In complex mixtures, where there are several trace phases (~<2 wt%) present, the technique becomes less accurate. It is most useful as an alternative technique to image analysis when sample preparation is problematic or sample particle sizes are sub-micron. It is a manual method which requires user input during the fitting process, but is both simpler and faster than image analysis due to the reduced set up time and sample preparation required. It is now implemented at CANMET as a technique for quantitative analysis.INTRODUCTIONUntil recently, the Applied Mineralogy group at CANMET used only image analysis and chemical techniques to determine phase quantities. An effort to develop quantitative X-ray diffraction (XRD) has been on-going for several years. Initially, the reference intensity ratio (RIR) method with external standards was tried with some success (Szymanski and Petruk, 1989). The main difficulty with this technique was finding adequate standard material for each phase present in the sample. This shortcoming made the method ultimately impractical, given the wide variety of materials which come to the laboratory for analysis.The Rietveld refinement method of quantitative XRD (Hill et al 1993, Mumme et al 1996), in contrast, requires no standards and requires minimal sample preparation and therefore a more rapid turnaround compared to image analysis. The Rietveld method also has advantages over image analysis in that it can identify and quantify polymorphs, ultra fine materials and many types of hydroxide products. As well, it is useful for analyzing materials such as bauxite or talc, which do not polish well enough for making mounts of the quality required for image analysis. To quantify amorphous material and phases which are present in amounts below the detection limit of XRD, the addition of a standard material is still required. However, in such cases only one standard is needed, which is alumina."

Gas management practices across the Australian underground coal industry have evolved significantly since the early nineties with the introduction of hazard management plans, directional drilling techniques, surface gas predrainage methods, and the widespread use of ventilation and gas reservoir simulation software.The improvements are evidenced by a substantial reduction in the occurrence of outbursts and gas related delays during a period where coal production rates have increased three to four fold. The development of effective gas predrainage strategies have been afforded by the use of reservoir simulators and a significant increase in the availability of measured gas reservoir data, in particular gas content and composition, adsorption isotherms and permeability. That said significant opportunities remain to optimise gas drainage designs and increase certainty in the gas predrainage design process through an enhanced understanding of coal seam permeability and how it is applied in the gas drainage design process.This paper describes the discrepancies between measured and actual seam permeability found during the recent assessment of two pilot predrainage programs executed in the coal measures of Queensland’s Bowen Basin. The results of those programs illustrate the need to better understand the validity of measured permeability data. The history match method employed in the pilot well assessments is proposed as an integral step in the routine gas drainage design processes that will ultimately lead to increased certainty and flexibility in gas predrainage practices.CITATION:Blanch, M, 2017. The discovery of the Nyidinghu Iron Ore Deposit totalling 2.46 Bt of resource continues FortescueÆs highly successful exploration record of discovering multi-billion tonne deposits under cover with little to no surface expression. Since inception in 2003 Fortescue have discovered and delineated the Christmas Creek and Cloudbreak deposits in the Chichester Range totalling 3.38 Bt and 3.25 Bt in the Solomon region. Together with other deposits Fortescues resource portfolio now approximates 10 Bt of hematite - goethite mineralisation.The Nyidinghu deposit is situated on the southern margin of the Fortescue Valley, 35 km south of FortescueÆs Cloudbreak mining operations on the north margin of the valley. Nyidinghu comprises approximately 70 per cent BID martite - goethite mineralisation hosted by the Brockman Iron Formation and 30 per cent CID beneath alluvial outwash of the Weeli Wolli Creek in to the Fortescue Valley. Minor DID mineralisation occurs at the deposit margins.BID mineralisation is strongly controlled by the pre-existing NE/SW trending Weeli Wolli Fault system and bounded to the north by the Poonda Fault. Both fault systems are interpreted to have had a long and complex history commencing pre Ophthalmian Orogeny (ca 2.2 Ga) and remaining intermittently active through the Proterozoic.CID at Nyidinghu is the downstream continuation of the combined Weeli Wolli/Marillana CID palaeochannel system being mined by Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton at Yandicoogina and Yandi, respectively.Exploration commenced in August 2010 with the inaugural resource announcement of 1 Bt being made just six months later. To date over 1700 RC and 85 diamond core holes have been drilled forming the basis for the resource of 2.46 Bt and ongoing feasibility studies. The Shinkansen of the Japanese National Railways (JNR) presently in operation between Tokyo and Hakata, approximately 1,000 km, was constructed at three stages: between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka opening in 1964, Shin-Osaka and Okayama in 1972 and Okayama and Hakata in 1975. Works on the extension of 400 km from Okayama to Hakata were launched in March 1970. As construction of the undersea Shin-Kanmon Tunnel on the extension was the toughest task, requiring many, many months, the work was undertaken earlier than any other works on the extension. It was brought to its completion in June 1974 at the cost of about 22, 000 million yen. The Shin-Kanmon Tunnel is the third undersea tunnel constructed to connect the main island of Honshu and Kyushu across the Kanmon Straits. (Table 1)

The year 1980 on the whole was not a good year for the world&apos;s mineral industry. The general upturn of activities in 1979 after a rather poor 1978 showing was not maintained with a number of key measurement standards showing downturns. Most notably, the world&apos;s steel and petroleum industries recorded significant reductions in output, the former in response to markedly lower demand levels and the latter partly in response to lower industrial consumption owing to general economic conditions and partly owing to successes in campaigns for the reduction of energy use in general and petroleum product use in particular among major importing nations that were feeling the trade balance pinch of ever-higher oil prices. During 1980, a number of political events-some international in scope, some confined to single nations-had significant influence upon world mineral industry activities and mineral commodity supplies, and other political happenings had the potential to significantly affect the industry in future times.

Porous and permeable rocks deeply buried in sedimentary basins contain immense volumes of hot water with the potential to supply low-grade heat energy. A part of Canada with sizeable potential for low-grade geothermal energy is the northern Williston Basin of southern Saskatchewan. In this region, the University of Regina has conducted a geological study investigating the feasibility of producing large quantities of warm water suitable for space heating in the Regina - Moose Jaw area. The study has shown that the most favourable geothermal reservoirs are in the Basal Clastic Unit (Cambrian Ordovician), which, at an approximate depth of 2,000 metres has predicted temperatures of 71°C to 74°C. We anticipate sustainable flow rates from these reservoirs of 100 to 300 ms/hr. The water contains about 150,000ppm of total dissolved solids, mostly sodium chloride. It is anticipated that the sulphate content will be 3,000 to 6,000 ppm, that the dissolved oxygen and hydrogen sulphide content will be small, and that the waters will be neutral to slightly alkaline. It is anticipated that the piezometric level will be 46 m below the ground surface for reservoirs in the upper part of the Basal Clastic Unit and 141m below the ground surface for the lower reservoirs of the unit. Plans are to build a low-grade geothermal research, testing and demonstration facility at the University of Regina. To be a practical demonstration, the facility will have to handle very large volumes of water. Because of high salinity, the water will be re injected into a subsurface reservoir. We do not anticipate insurmountable problems because of salinities or as a result of corrosion provided that the waters are not aerated during handling

The U.S Bureau of Mines conducted a five-year mineral resource assessment of the 16.6 million acre Colville Mining District in northern Alaska, which includes part of the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska. The study was initiated at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, which administers the majority of the region. The study was done in cooperation with the Alaskan Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys, the U. S. Geological Survey, and the University of Alaska. During fieldwork, 1593 rock, soil, and stream sediment samples were collected and four bulk samples taken for beneficiation studies. A total of 40 mineral occurrences were documented, including 27 which were previously undescribed. No mining has occurred within the district. Mississippian carbonaceous shale and siliceous mudstone contain stratiform exhalative lead-zinc-silver occurrences. Grades average 8.0% combined lead/zinc and 51 gm/mt silver. Upper Devonian to Lower Mississippian sandstones host breccia veins, containing up to 29% combined lead/zinc and 274 gm/mt silver. Mineralized quartzites of similar age have potential for disseminated-type lead-zinc deposits. Samples from Lower Cretaceous mudstone and shale beds up to 6.5 meters thick, contain as much up to 12% manganese. Upper Mississippian carbonaceous shale and limestone beds contain up to 23% phosphate. Stratiform barite deposits hosted by cherts, are up to 27 meters thick with an average specific gravity of 4.16. Vein-type fluorite occurrences are associated with Mississippian limestone. Moderate potential exists for development of zinc -lead-silver, barite, and phosphate deposits.

As part of the U.S. Bureau of Mines program to improve base metal leach systems, pressure leaching of galena (PbS) concentrates in fluosilicic acid (H2SiF6) solution was investigated. Lead extraction was 93 pct when PbS was pressure leached in H2SiF6 at 95° C with 2OO-psig O2 pressure for 40 min, using ferric nitrate [Fe(N03)3] as a catalyst. The effects of several catalysts, O2 pressure, time, and acid concentration on leaching were determined. The purified leach solution was electrowon to recover high-purity Pb metal. The H2SiF6 used in leaching and electrowinning can be recycled continuously. A flow diagram was proposed based on this investigation. Elemental sulfur (SO) was recovered from the leach residue by solvent extraction. A method was also developed for treating the flnal residue to segregate the important byproduct elements such as Ag, Cu, and Zn and enable their recovery by standard commercial processes.

The benefits of water harvesting as an alternative to conventional reclamation were demonstrated on the Peabody Coal mines in Northeast Arizona. The project produced food crops for four years, and demonstrated that a catchment/crop area ratio of about 2.5:1 was sufficient to obtain sufficient water from the 11 inch annual precipitation to produce garden and fruit varieties in quantities equal to or exceeding national production averages. The economic returns exceeded those of the conventional practice of returning the mine area to rangeland by at least ten fold. Subsidence of the regraded spoil was the only major problem in maintaining the system. Although, water harvesting systems have the potential of providing high economic returns and greater social benefits, as demonstrated by this project they are presently at variance with the strip mining regulation.

Experimentally determined and theoretically explained phenomenon of zonal disintegration of rock around the development working brings about the radical changes in existing ideas about the mechanism of interaction rock massive with engineering constructions.The essence of the phenomenon consists in the fact, that forming of non-elastic deformations zone goes on by way of more intensive deformation and destruction of rock simultaneously in several zones, covering partially or fully output circuit and divided by zones of destructed rock. Under the influence of change of massive strained-deformational condition of depositional rock an accidental deviation of zones of supplementary expansion and compression of rock from the previous positions take place. One can observe multiplicational change of the outline, size and form of all disintegration zones in the time within the area of the working influence at massive. This phenomenon was named "fluctuation of zonal disintegration of sedimentary rock around development working".

The paper point out the testwork has been carried out with real process solutions from the Chambishi cobalt plant in Zambia, showing that the ISEP® continuous ion exchange system can effectively remove nickel from cobalt sulphate electrolyte. Laboratory testing confirmed published data, and was subsequently verified on site at Chambishi in a pilot test program. Based on the testwork data, a commercial unit is being installed at Chambishi.

Several investigators have obtained solutions for the concentration of stress around circular, ovaloidal, elliptical, and rectangular holes in an elastic, isotropic, semiinfinite plate subjected to uniaxial and biaxial stress. These solutions are used to evaluate the changes in stress around openings immediately under the undercut normally used in conventional block caving operations. The evaluations are based on the assumption that a horizontal undercut removes most of the vertical component of a biaxial stress field. The location and magnitude of the significant changes in stress concentration around the opening are computed. Conditions under which the assumptions used in the evaluations may or may not be consistent with conditions around block caving mines are discussed, and examples of preferred opening shapes for a biaxial (hydrostatic) stress field are shown. This report is a summary of one phase of an investigation to establish design methods for the size and shape of mine openings used in block caving mining methods .

A joint effort by the Pittsburgh Research Center (PRC) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA)3was undertaken to determine how well self-contained self-rescuers (SCSR&apos;s), deployed in accordance with Federal regulations (30 CFR 75.1714), held up in the underground environment with regard to both physical damage and aging. This report presents findings regarding laboratory-tested SCSR&apos;s in the fifth phase of testing from mid-1993to early 1996. The SCSR&apos;s were tested on human subjects and on a breathing and metabolic simulator (BMS) at PRC. These results indicate that most of the apparatus, if they pass their inspection criteria, perform satisfactorily.

A kinetic study of the carbon deposition reaction was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines as part of a broad investigation of metallurgical reactions in the iron ore blast furnace. The disproportionation of carbon monoxide on iron pellets was investigated at carbon monoxide pressures between 0.5 and 2 atmospheres (absolute) and temperatures from 400° to 1,075° C. Gas flow in the range from 0.25 to 0.85 standard liter per minute was found to have little effect on the reaction velocity. The addition of nitrogen and helium to caron monoxide exerted only a dilution effect on the rate of carbon deposition. However, an addition of 1 percent hydrogen increased the rate about 100 times. Small amounts of carbon dioxide in the inlet gas exerted little effect on the rate of carbon deposition. The maximum rate for carbon deposition in the first 2 hours occurred at 550° C. The apparent molar activation energies at various stages of the reaction were found to vary from 13 kcal initially to 36 kcal during the latter stages of the reaction. The reaction rate behavior was tentatively explained by an adsorption step followed by the diffusion of iron through a shell of inactive iron carbide.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes the results of modifications in the borehole deformation gage design and subsequent changes in the overcoring techniques. Modifications in the borehole deformation gage have greatly improved the creep characteristics and enhanced the versatility of the gage. In situ field tests in competent rock near St. Cloud, Minn., provided sufficient data to compare the reliability between gages and new techniques in obtaining good engineering estimates of stresses. Near-surface horizontal stresses at the test sites are compressive and biaxial in nature.

Four significant soil nail wall projects in the eastern United States were recently completed with a combined area of 175,000 square feet of finished shotcrete surface. These projects required the use of innovative design and construction methods in order to address various challenges, including slide-prone back slope materials, perched water, highly erodible rock materials, curved wall alignments, very tight construction tolerances and unexpected subsurface conditions. Special focus is given to issues such as bench excavation, soil nail installation methods, shotcrete mix design, anticipated shotcrete quantities, shotcrete nozzlemen qualifications and weather conditions, in order to provide a lessons-learned database for future soil nail wall design and inspector considerations. These projects also underscore the importance of design engineer and soil nail wall contractor qualifications as well as effective communication with the owner.
