The Great South Basin is located beneath the northwest part of the Campbell Plateau, a+broad, nearly level, triangular shaped submarine platform, southeast of the South Island of New Zealand. It encompasses an area of 77 700 square kilometres and contains a sequence of Cretaceous to Tertiary sedimentary rocks which are up to 6000 metres thick near the centre of the basin (Shirley, 1983). The western boundary of the basin is adjacent to the steep Aucklands Slope. In the+ north it merges with the Canterbury Basin and to the south onlaps against the Pukaki Rise, a basement high. The eastern margin of the basin is bounded by the northeast - southwest trending steep linear Antipodes Scarp. In the extreme south the Antipodes Scarp curves westward and joins the north trending Aucklands Slope. The Campbell Plateau is dominated by tensional tectonics. The Antipodes Scarp represents a major region of transcurrent faulting initiated by Cretaceous rotation within the Campbell Plateau. Later movements are associated with the Alpine Fault of the South Island (Sandford, 1980; Anderton, Holloway, Engstrom, Ahmad and Chong, 1982).

Marble is one of tile most beautiful and enduring materials employed in the construction industries. Because of its diverse colors, decorative patterns, and varying textures, it has furnished material for artistic architectural design for many centuries. The marble industry is described in some detail in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 106, The Technology of Marble Quarrying, which, unfortunately, is now out of print but may be consul ted at most large libraries. Onyx marble and travertine are discussed in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6751. The purpose of this paper is to describe the main features of a distinctive group of ornamental marbles known as the serpentine marbles or verde antiques.

"Platinum-group minerals (PGM) typically occur in such low concentrations that quantitative mineralogical evaluation is difficult or impossible. The FEI MLA system used by Vale Base Metals Technology Development has been successfully employed to produce large PGM data sets that are statistically robust. The MLA Sparse Phase Liberation mapping routine produces false colored images that accurately document mineral textures, including intergrowths between various platinum group minerals and between PGMs and other tellurides and sulfides. MLA PGM search results can be used in conjunction with mineral chemistry to calculate platinumgroup element distribution to minerals and the MLA PGM images can be used to produce model grade-recovery curves.INTRODUCTIONThe platinum-group minerals (PGM) found in Sudbury area deposits have been extensively catalogued and reviewed by many authors including, but not limited to: Farrow and Lightfoot (2002), Cabri and Laflamme (1984; 1976) and Cabri (1981). The PGM list currently used has 12 minerals summarized in Table 1. As noted by Farrow and Lightfoot (2002), platinum-group minerals in Sudbury are dominated by tellurides, bismuth-tellurides and arsenides, with an absence of platinum-group element (PGE) sulphides or ferro-platinum alloys such as tetraferroplatinum - PtFe."

Longwall extraction in the Phalen Scam in the Sydney Coalfield of Nova Scotia is carried out under flooded abandoned workings in the Harbour Seam 140 m above, and at depth of up to 700 m beneath the Atlantic Ocean. Careful planning of panel and pillar dimensions is necessary to prevent inflows from the overlying workings and to prevent the development of excessive subsidence strains at the seabed. This paper briefly summarises the research undertaken over the past five years by CBDC and CBCRL into the problems associated with mining under water, and then describes the development and application of a design/planning code of practice developed jointly by CBDC, CBCRL and mine regulatory agencies. The design method employed in the Code of Practise is based on empirical data from the coalfield and parameters developed from subsidence modelling and previous water inflow experience. It includes precautionary measures to be adopted during development and mining, and monitoring procedures to be followed. It is flexible enough to allow future developments in the understanding of inflow mechanisms to be incoporated without major modifications, and represents a major step forward in reducing the potential hazards associated with coal extraction in the coalfield.

Shoshonite suite (absarokite-shoshonite-banakite) and adakite-hosted epithermal Au deposits are a feature of circum-Pacific magmatism. Fijian examples include Tavua (Emperor) and Tuvatu on Viti Levu. New discoveries of shoshonite suite and adakite-hosted epithermal Au mineralisation have been made in the southern Yasawa Islands and in central-northern and central-western Viti Levu. The Fijian shoshonites define four NE–SW trending suites. The oldest is the northern 7.9–5.0 Ma Yasawa suite, followed by the 4.7–3.5 Ma Sabeto–Tavua–Rakiraki suite in northern Viti Levu, the 4.7–4.2 Ma Yanuca–Vatulele suite approximately 20 km south of Viti Levu and the 3.4 Ma Astrolabe suite approximately 75 km further south. Shoshonite suite lithologies with 3.8–3.0 Ma ages also occur in the Lomaiviti islands between Vatu-Cake and Moala, to the east of Viti Levu, defining a trend oblique to the NE–SW shoshonite belts. Seatura, a 3.3–2.8 Ma ocean island basalt (OIB) volcano, sits at the northern end of the Lomaiviti trend shoshonites. Trace element/isotopic chemistries indicate that shoshonite arc magma genesis involved the melting of a hydrated supra-subduction zone mantle wedge and also a lower mantle-derived plume (OIB) component. The upwelling plume provided heat for melting and possibly Au enrichment. Accessing the melt generation zone associated with the plume required a slab conduit or window. Such slab windows form by tearing during subduction or occur at slab edges. Adakites form by plume-induced slab melting. The four NE–SW Fijian shoshonite suites are interpreted to occur in back-arc extensional zones above a slab window (tear) that migrated southward during rollback of the New Hebrides–Vanuatu subduction zone. The plume (Seatura OIB) that is interpreted to have caused mantle wedge melting and formation of the Lomaviti trend shoshonites was focused along the interface between the north-dipping Vanuatu–New Hebrides subduction zone and the west-dipping Tonga subduction zone, which we have seismically imaged at approximately 400 km depth. Natural bornite (Cu5FeS4) leached in ferric chloride or in sulfuric or hydrochloric acid solutions with oxygen showed several differences. In ferric chloride 80 of the copper was leached in two stages. The first (30 copper removal) requiring one minute was controlled by mixed kinetics (liquid ferric ion diffusion and chemical surface reaction). The second was controlled by formation of a surface sulfur layer and then diffusion through the sulfur. With oxygen in sulfuric acid reaction was slow and only the first stage was studied. Copper removal had an induction period. The bornite structure disappeared at 12% copper removal (also found with ferric chloride) and covellite formed on the surface with a species inside the particles having an x-ray structure similar to CuFeS2 but with composition Cu3FeS4 (also with ferric chloride). Copper removal was controlled by iron dissolution. Surface iron vacancies filled with Cu+ to give CuS while interior copper dissolution produced Cu3FeS4. Preliminary results with oxygen and hydrochloric acid showed 80% copper removal and sulfur as end products (similar to ferric chloride).

An engineering investigation was carried out on the technical and economic feasibility of implementing flexible liner/backpacking support systems In an advancing tailgate longwall mine. The system for a model mine consists of a circular tube constructed of liner plates and flyash backpacking. Flyash is pneumatically stowed into the tailgate. Small amounts of cement may be mixed to improve the support capability of the fill In difficult local ground conditions. Water is added inside the nozzle immediately prior to spraying. Results of theoretical analyses and a field test show that the designed system is technically feasible, can be cost-competitive, provides more stable ground conditions, and can Increase productivity and coal recovery, when compared with existing retreat longwall systems. In certain mine layouts, the new system can reduce the direct mining costs by a significant amount. The system would be particularly applicable to deeper coal beds with bad ground conditions.

This report presents experimental data on crater formation in four rock types. From an analysis of these data a general theory of rock breakage by explosives is deduced. This theory accounts for most of the rock breakage and other phenomena that occur when a concentrated charge is detonated in a drill hole near a free surface. From instrumented crater tests and high-speed motion pictures of the explosions, various experimental checks on the deduced theory of rock breakage are made. The general mechanism of rock breakage by explosives as described in this report is outlined briefly below. The detonation of the explosive charge creates a high gas pressure in the charge hole, which in turn generates a compressive strain pulse in the surrounding rock. This compressive strain pulse travels outward in all directions from the charge hole. Near the charge hole the amplitude of this strain pulse is sufficient to cause crushing of the rock. However, as the strain pulse travels outward its amplitude decays rapidly until no further crushing of the rock is possible. The compressive strain pulse continues to travel outward until it is reflected by a free surface. Upon reflection the compressive strain pulse becomes a tensile strain pulse. As the strength of rock in tension is much less than in compression, the reflected tensile strain pulse is able to break the rock in tension, progressing from the free surface back toward the shot point. In other words, the rock is pulled apart, not pushed apart.

This case study details the process that was used for project planning and permitting for the Greens Creek Mine, located near Juneau Alaska, as seen through the eyes of one of the primary environmental consultants. This case shows how a Company could involve the public and the agencies in the early 1980's and develop a project sensitive to concerns expressed with a high level of environmental protection. Comparisons are made to the current environmental permitting situation. Initial baseline studies performed during the exploration phase provided helpful information for more detailed environmental work in 1980-1981 as planning and permitting formally got underway. Since the mine was in a National Monument and abuts up to a designated wilderness, the Monument Manager administered the project for the lead agency, the USDA Forest Service. Planning and permitting progressed smoothly to a Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) in 1983. Metal prices were depressed when the FEIS was completed and the project permitting proceeded slowly. Ownership changed several times in the mid-1980's. New owners re-evaluated the project and suggested five changes that required a supplemental EA prior to development. The project was fully permitted and started construction in 1988. Operation began in 1989. Today the environmental process in southeast Alaska is now much more complex, detailed, expensive, and time consuming than in the early 1980's. Significant issues discussed that may impede development and operation include overlapping agency jurisdictions, personal agendas of agency staff, conflicts between agencies that impede project progress, changing regulations, and a well organized environmental opposition.

The prevention of silicosis by metallic aluminium has been reported by Denny, Robson, and Irwin in two papers. The first was published in 1937; the second in 1939. The results definitely established that silicosis was prevented in animals by the inhalation of small quantities of aluminium. The present communication records subsequent progress in this field of research.HARMLESSNESS OF ALUMINIUMAnimal experiments having served their purpose, it became necessary to consider means to test the discovery on humans. A question for immediate consideration was: Is aluminium harmful to man when inhaled as a fine powder? While the animal experiments were reassuring, since they conclusively showed the powder to be innocuous when breathed by animals, it was, nevertheless, desirable to have additional reassurance with regard to its effect upon human beings.Through the courtesy of the Aluminium Company of America and especially the valued interest in this problem displayed by that Company's Director of Research, Dr. Francis C. Frary, a study was made of the records pertaining to the health of a group of 125 employees who had for many years been engaged in the manufacture of finely powdered, metallic aluminium for the paint and ink industries. The conditions were such that these employees had inhaled varying and oft-times very dense concentrations of this powder daily over periods ranging from 6 to 23 years, the average 101 the group being 12 years. X-ray pictures of their chests showed no abnormalities attributable to aluminium. Their general health seemed better than that of the 3,000 workers in other sections of the plant. In fact, the early films of three employees in this group of 125 showed shadows suggestive of minimal tuberculosis, which shadows were not discernible in films taken after considerable periods of exposure to aluminium powder.The harmlessness of aluminium was; by this study, reasonably well established at the outset, a finding subsequently verified by Ontario research on humans.PROPOSAL TO TREAT HUMAN SILICOSISBased upon these findings, a proposal to treat silicotics with aluminium was discussed by officials of the Mclntyre Mine and the Banting Institute.

This report includes a review of all relevant data on underground hydraulic coal mining technology collected during Phases I and II of the contract. Data collection and analysis procedures are discussed. Information is included on past and existing underground hydraulic coal nines in the USSR (27 mines), Poland (1 mina), Germany (1 mine), Japan (1 mine), Canada (1 mine), China (1 nine), as well as underground tests conducted in the United Kingdom (2 mines), and in the United States (5 mines). Data is also included on Czechoslovakia and New Zealand. In all operational hydraulic mines, coal is transported underground in flumes. In most cases, bituminous coal is broken by monitors with nozzle diameters larger than 16 mm (0.63 in.) and jet pressures of 50 to 125 atm (710 to 1780 psi). Technical design and performance data are included on all key types of equipment and components which have been developed for, used in, or which could be potentially be used in hydraulic coal mining systems. Data sheets are presented on 180 types of equipment, divided into 24 major categories. Where available, sketches, drawings, photographs, and price estimates are included. Data are included on pitching coal seams in the United States which potentially can be mined by hydraulic methods. Preliminary conclusions are presented, subject to revision as a result of economic feasibility studies to be completed during Phase III. An outline is presented of the final report, which will include economic studies and recommendations for research and development.

In 1987 Wyoming became the largest coal producing state in the country. The state is known for its extensive coal resources and extremely thick coal seams. Wyoming's coal reserves total about 69.3 billion tons, or 14.2 percent of the U.S. coal reserve. Coal seams range generally from 10 to 80 feet in thickness, although one seam is 220 feet thick. The coal-bearing areas of Wyoming underlie approximately 41 percent of the state's total land area. Wyoming's coal ranges from lignite to high volatile bituminous. Most of the coal produced is subbituminous from the Powder River coal region near Gillette. The presence of coal in Wyoming was discovered before 1834 on the Belle Fourche River. The state's first mine opened in Carbon County in 1865, and with the completion of the trans- continental railroad, the demand for coal increased. Currently approximately 80 percent of Wyoming's coal production is shipped out-of-state to meet the growing demand for low- sulfur coal to fuel electric generating plants. Wyoming received conditional regulatory approval November 26, 1980. Its Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved February 14, 1983.

"These tentative coal mine inspection standards have been prepared as a guide for the Federal inspection of coal mines of the United States. Much time and thought have been spent by various members of the Safety Division in the preparation of thses standards, and it is believed that compliance with them eventually will be possible in most mines. In many instances objections will be raised to them owing to long-established mining customs and practices that are inherently of dubious safety and to a natural inclination to oppose change. In other instances there will be valid objections due to conditions not foreseen at the time these standards were prepared. Or there may be substandard conditions and practices due to original mine layouts that it is not practicable to change during the lifetime of the mine; in such instances it is likely that some effective measures are or can be taken toward lessening hazards.With the rapid change in mining methods some of the standards may become inapplicable and it may be advisable to revise them to meet the new conditions. Therefore, questions regarding these standards and suggestions regarding new standards should be brought to the attention of the supervising engineer of the Coal Mine Inspection Division so that modifications of and additions to these standards may be made from time to time.In many respects these standards exceed the provisions of the various State mining laws, and some may conflict with the laws of some States. In cases of conflict, the intent is not to advocate noncompliance with State laws but to suggest that it may be desirable for the State to reconsider such laws or safety orders.Although an effort has been made to word these standards so that they may be readily understood, nevertheless, a reasonable interpretation should be placed upon them. In fact, in numerous instances the words reasonable"", ""suitable"", and ""properly"" are used in recognition of the fact that reason- and sound judgment enter into the carrying out of the safety endeavor.The policy of the Bureau on some vitally important safety matters in mines is set forth in its published Safety Decisions. These decisions have been consulted and used in the preparation of these standards. These decisions also are now being reexamined by its Mine Safety Board."

In his account of the Thackaringa sulphide ore, Lawrence (p. 92) reports the presence of valleriite as a minor accessory in chalcopyrite. He says that it is readily identified by its intensive anisotrophy and reflection pleochroism. He also gives (p. 87) the chemical formula as Cu8Fe4S7 Recent work by Evans et al. (1964), Chamberlain and Delabio (1965), and Schidlowski and Otteman (1966) suggests that most material identified as valleriite is, in fact, mackinawite. Mackinawite and valleriite are both extremely anisotropic and strongly reflection pleochroic, and so with fine-grained material it would be hard to distinguish them optically.Mackinawite, according to Evans et al. (p. D66) is a copper-free iron sulphide (PeS) with small quantities of nickel, whereas valleriite is considered to be a dimorph of chalcopyrite (CuPeS2 ). They found that mackinawite is much more widespread than valleriite, and, unlike the latter mineral, is commonly included in other sulphides, particularly chalcopyrite.Lawrence (p. 92) states that the valleriite inclusions are up to 0·01 mm long, so that an electron probe microanalysis should be quite feasible and provide a ready answer to this query.L. This report covers research which is directed toward the measurement and control of underground mine diesel emissions. The report consists of three separate reports presented as Sections 1, 2, and 3. Section 1 "Emissions Measurement Apparatus" (EMA 1) discusses the selection and evaluation of instruments and procedures to be used as part of a diesel tailpipe emissions dilution and measurement apparatus. The instruments selected for gaseous pollutants are the Energetics Science Inc.* E.S.I.) 2000 for CO, the E.S.I. 7000 for NO and N02, and the Fuji ZFP5 for C02. Particulate matter is presently measured with the Celesco 1013 Smoke Opacity Meter. The raw exhaust concentration of one of these constituents is used Lo calculate the dilution ratio. Either a modified high range E.S.I. 2000 CO instrument or a Daco Products Cobra C02 instrument can be used, but neither is totally satisfactory. The study also indicated that it may he possible to increase the sample collection time from 15 seconds to the total 30 seconds over which the engine can be loaded without increasing the probability of damaging the vehicle hydraulic systems. Section 2 "The Effect of Fuels, Catalysts and a Filter Trap on Drift Pollutant Concentrations" discusses research in the Mine Air Quality Laboratory. A Wagner ST5D LHD with a Deutz F8L714 engine was used to compare three exhaust aftertreatment devices and a muffler-only system. The effect of these four systems on CO, C02, NO and N02 and on total, soluble, sulfate, and solid particulate matter was measured in the drift and on the LHD. The filter trap successfully reduced particulate matter for both fuels without significantly increasing the concentrations of any of the other constituents. The PTX catalyst was effective in reducing CO, and soluble particulate, but significantly increased N02 and solid and sulfate particulate matter. The Oxy Cat catalyst tested didn't seem to he working on the gases, and it significantly increased sulfate, soluble arid solid particulate concentrations. Section 3 "Diesel/Coal Particulate Matter Characterization by Laser Raman Spectroscopy" covers basic research on a method for determining the percentage by weight of diesel particulate on a filter containing a diesel-coal mixture. Signal-averaged Raman spectra provide the necessary precision. The method developed is non-destructive and uses as-received filters requiring no sample manipulation. Particulate with diesel contents in the range of 10 to 50% by weight have been analyzed with accuracies better than 6%t of the mean value. A number of samples containing diesel-coal mixtures were characterized by the procedures developed and the results are analyzed in light of various spectral and other system variables including coal rank and form and diesel engine operating conditions.

The double-porosity model of Warren and Root7 for examining pressure drawdown and buildup phenomena in naturally fractured reservoirs has been extended to intetpret interference test results. Both analytical and numerical solutions are presented. The practicality of some of the assumptions in the Warren-Root model was also investigated. The standard procedure for interpreting interference tests in naturally fractured reservoirs beretofore employed an equivalent homogeneous reservoir model. A comparison of our results with the equivalent homogeneous model indicates the latter is inadequate for early time responses. For late time responses, however, the simpler equivalent homogeneous model yields favorable results. Finally, the effects of well spacing and the magnitude of the interporosity flow parameter are briefly cited. INTRODUCTION Interference tests can be used to provide reservoir information not obtainable from conventional pressure drawdown and buildup tests. The technique involves measuring the response in one or more wells arising from a pressure perturbation introduced into another well. It has been. successfully applied to single-layer, homogeneous, unfractured, isotropic and anisotropic formations to arrive at values of well storage capacity and a measure of directional permeability.l The techniques of interference testing usually can be extended to heterogeneous systems, provided the permeability contrast between any existing rock layers is not excessive.9 In such cases, the practical interference effects in an observation well of an interconnecting heterogeneous reservoir can be predicted using an equivalent homogeneous model. The calculated properties are then average values. Russell and Prats2 have demonstrated the utility of this approach for a single-phase, two-layer system. For naturally fractured reservoirs, some different approaches usually are necessary. The major departure from homogeneous or nearly homogeneous reservoir treatment is to characterize the fractured system as an entity having "double-porosity"; namely, we suppose the existence of both primary and secondary porosity, where the former is contained within a systematic array of identical rectangular matrix blocks and the latter is contained within an orthogonal system of continuous, uniform fractures (see Fig. 1). It is sufficient to assume that the permeability of the rock matrix is so small that movement of reservoir fluids to the producing wells is entirely through the fracture network. This assumption has been validated by Barenblatt3 and .employed by others?-7 Warren and Root7 used the double-porosity model to develop an interpretation of pressure drawdown and pressure buildup tests in naturally fractured

The evolution of surface mine layout configuration is a function of the schedules and sequence of material excavation within the optimized layouts. The production schedules and sequence of materials movement from multi-bench and multi-face operations are difficult to plan and execute. However, the ability to maximize the profit or net present value of an orebody is largely dependent on the mining schedule. The mining schedule will determine the life of the mine, the projected cashflows, and the investment requirements over the mine life. The pit geometries, pit expansion rates and the periodic volume of materials from different benches in a multi-bench, multi-face open pit mine determine the equipment requirements. The volume of materials excavated, as well as pit layout changes from circular and elliptical geometries of an oil sands mine were modeled using analytical geometric and parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) and solved within Matlab. The results show that the geometric values are almost the same as those obtained from PDEs for different pit configurations. The economic analysis shows that both the current mining system (CMS) and the cyclic excavator conveyor belt control system (CycEx CBCS) are viable with high NPV (= $3.20 × 1010), PI (> 19%) and IRR (> 29.02%) with short discounted payback periods (= 3.24 months). The CycEx CBCS option is more economic than the CMS option. Its NPV is 1.27 times that of the CMS option. The PI and IRR for the CycEx CBCS option are respectively 2.24 and 1.13 times that of the CMS option. As well, the CycEx CBCS option has almost half the DPBP of the CMS option. The CMS option has an operating cost of $1.386 per tonne ($2.774/barrel) while that of the CycEx CBCS option is $0.779/tonne ($1.558/barrel). These results show that the CycEx CBCS option is the better option for mining companies working on oil sands deposits to invest in.
