Water recycle is an important part of the coal preparation process. This study was directed toward: (1) a survey of current practice and an evaluation of both the solid and liquid components of blackwater, (2) an experimental study of blackwater flocculation, and (3) a fundamental analysis of the flocculation process. The solids contained in the blackwater discharge to the fine refuse thickener of a coal preparation plant were found to contain, on average, 56% coal and 44% mineral matter. The mineral matter was largely illitic clay, while the water phase contained relatively large amounts of S04 and Ca++. Detailed studies were made of both natural and synthetic flocculants and the influence of polymer type and pH on the settling rate, turbidity of the supernatent liquid and sludge volume of the settled solids. More tundamental studies were made that clearly indicate the need for controlled mixing of polymer into the suspension to be flocculated, and the need to evaluate, more closely, the structure of the flocs formed during the process. Research recommendations are given.

The substantial investment in tunnels anticipated in the next twenty years has focused new attention on the economics of tunnel construction itself and on some costly problems associated with underground work: the uncertain geologic conditions, the performance and adaptability of men and equipment, and the need for quicker, more efficient excavation methods. There also exists a need to develop better ways of estimating tunnel construction. Inaccuracies in current bid estimates stem from a number of causes, among them (1) the effects of geologic conditions, which are not adequately known prior to construction, (2) the dependence of actual cost on the construction method used and on the interactions among the operations occurring underground, and (3) the reliability of tunneling equipment. Inability to estimate final costs for conventional tunneling more accurately has in turn caused difficulty in gauging the costs and benefits attributable to new tunneling technologies either under development or for which R&D programs are planned. ATTRIBUTES OF THE TUNNEL COST MODEL This paper presents a computer based Tunnel Cost Model (TCM) which quantitatively assesses the uncertainties inherent in underground work, and is detailed enough to aid in preparing estimates or bids. "A bulk mining method is employed at the Lockerby mine resulting in the formation of large muck-piles. If these muckpiles remain in the stopes for some time they may agglomerate to the extent that the muck cannot be removed by a scooptram. A laboratory investigation was undertaken with sulphide material from the mine in order to detemine the time that oxidation begins and the flowability of the material as a f unction of several factors. The laboratory results are applied to the conditions in the muck-piles.The time of the beginning of oxidation of the material decreases as the sulphide composition, water content and availability of air increases. Oxidation is retarded by the addition of a copper sulphate solution instead of water. The unconfined yield force (strength} of the material increases with an increase in the sulphide composition, water content and time. The material ceases to be free-flowing before there is visible evidence of oxidation and this suggests that oxidation actually begins earlier and that agglomeration is also due to the capillary action of water.Broken ore should be removed from the stope prior to the time a muck-pile ceases to be free -flowing-perhaps as early as two days f or high-grade ore and 5 days f or low-grade ore. In order to control dust, 1.4 weight per cent of a 5 per cent solution of copper sulphate should be added 10 the muck-pile rather than water. This inhibits oxidation and increases the time that a muck-pile remains free-flowing."

A Good Product Range - So What! While in terms of water, waste management and environment protectrion, the Gippsland Basin may appear to have a good product range, what does this really mean? What it means is that, like any product range, the virtues of the product range must be sold and accepted by a majority of the public. The social, economic and environmental benefits of any enterprise using these products must be sold and accepted by the regional population. Many a budding entrepreneur has failed because he assumed that the public would accept his product, so good did it appear to be! However, we know that such an assumption must be avoided and that a great deal of time and effort needs to be invested in promoting and gaining acceptance of a product to ensure a long term and viable market.

Burnout Control is a process developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines for accelerating the burning of wasted coal fires in situ, while at the same time controlling the heat and fumes produced. The Albright fIre project is a fIrst fIeld trial of Burnout Control as applied to a coal waste bank. An exhaust ventilation system was designed and constructed and then operated over a 1-year period at the site of an existing abandoned mine land fire near the town of Albright, WV. While predicted exhaust gas temperatures of 900° C and thermal power levels of 5 MW were achieved at 20-to 3O-in H20 vacuum levels, problems were encountered with engineering designs, equipment breakdown, and fuel-rich combustion that curtailed the time period of satisfactory operation. Effective afterburning of the exhaust gases (as they were drawn from the bank) corrected the problems associated with combustion stoichiometry and led to high thermal outputs. It is believed that with (1) improvements in engineering design and construction, (2) better control of the afterburning process, and (3) the use of conventional stack gas air-pollution controls, Burnout Control can be applied successfully to a coal waste bank fire.

Contract is a PC-based software program designed to satisfy the main features that have been identified to be lacking from cost estimation systems currently in place in the Australian coal industry. Contract was developed in conjunction with an Australian contracting company to refine the existing core structure used by the company for project evaluation. The key feature of Contract is the availability of analysis functions to explore multiple options within a contract project by altering identified variables. The ability to update project files has been incorporated into Contract to ensure that it is user-friendly and relatively simple to use. Lists of mining equipment and consumables are stored in MS ACCESS database files, along with the supplier details for each item. Each time a project is initiated there is a dynamic link to the database files and the most recent current information is retrieved and linked with the project. Contract provides an option to calculate the changes in metre unit cost as a function of the average development cost. Keywords: Contracting, cost estimation, sensitivity analysis.

On March 12, 1994, the 1,100-foot deep 2 Yard South panel of the 1l0 year-old Retsof Mine collapsed. At the time of this occurrence, the Retsof Mine was characterized as the world's largest, most productive salt mine. The collapse produced a seismic event and resulted in a sinkhole and small lake forming on the surface. An existing highway bridge was rendered unusable. Water entered the mine and despite valiant efforts by the miners and the mining company, the entire mine was flooded and lost. John T. Boyd Company (BOYD) studied the incident to evaluate design procedures, and assess the short- and long-term environmental impacts of the collapse. This paper presents our analysis of the cause of the collapse and our review of the rock mechanics design of 2 Yard South panel. Our review is, in part, based on a rock mechanics monitoring program of 2 Yard South. The monitoring program was established by the mining company as the panel was developed and continued even after the panel became unstable.

Phase I of these studies demonstrated the feasibility of measuring the efficiency and capacity of sorbents in tube-type samplers for contaminant gases. This was accomplished by measuring concentration at various points along the length of the diffusion path during sampling. Concentrations were measured by removing small aliquots with gas-tight syringes and gas chromatography. With hexane as the gas and activated charcoal as the sorbent the procedure was quite successful and we proceeded with Phase II of the study; this involved application of the principle to gases of importance in diesel exhaust using a variety of sorbents. When we worked with high concentrations of the test gas we clearly demonstrated the differences in both efficiency and capacity of the sorbents for each of several gases. The chief drawbacks of the system were that we were unsuccessful in determining more toxic gases at realistic occupational exposure levels or determining formaldehyde at any level using the flame ionization detector. It was concluded that, although the method is feasible, more sensitive methods of measuring concentrations of gas in the tube must be developed to make the procedure applicable to regions of chief industrial hygiene interest.

Over 60 simple; were prepared and forwarded to Dr, S. Z. Toma, TPO, PMSRC as a result of this project. Included among these samples were various low temperature forms of silica. Samples of quartz, cristobalite, and tridymite with iron, manganese, and titanium impurities present were prepared. In addition, a long series of samples both wet ground and dry ground for times from 1/2 to 8 hours were prepared. Numerous miscellaneous samples were submitted which included kaolinite, calcite, muscovite, illite, montmorillonite, Ba3(P04)2, and YPO4 among others, in response to special requests from the TPO. The silica rich portion of selected binary (CA 203-Si02, In 203-Si02, Li20-Si02) Na20-Si02, PbO-Si02, SnO2-Si02, Sn02-Si02 BaGa204-SiO2 and SrGa204-Si02) and ternary systems (Na20-Ga203-Si02 and Li20-Ga203-Si02) was investigated to determine the effects of solid solubility on the stabilization of the high temperature forms of tridymite. During the past 50 years, significant research has been performed in the ecology and physiology of plants that colonize soils containing elevated concentrations of heavy metals. Similar work has also been performed on plants that are able to survive acidic and saline environments. Efforts have focused on the ecological analysis of plant communities that occur over a range of metalliferous mining wastes. Investigations have been performed on the mechanisms that allow selected varieties of plant species to survive in normally phytotoxic environments and on the potential applications of metal-tolerant varieties of plant species. The purpose is the remediation and reclamation of mining wastes and soils that contain unusually high concentrations of so-called heavy metals. Characteristics of some mineral wastes Metalliferous mining wastes present special environmental restoration problems because of their toxicity. Potential toxicities are mostly caused by residual metals derived from weathering of low-grade ore or the waste products of mineral processing. In cases where pyrite forms a part of the mining waste, acid generation by oxidation may exacerbate the toxicity problem by promoting heavy-metal mobilization in aqueous solution.

The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences is undertaking a mineral resource assessment study of the Coromandel region, due for completion in July 2000. A key part of the study is the assembly of a geographic information system (GIS), a computerised tool for layering, analysing and presenting spatial information. The GIS is being assembled with ArcInfo/ArcView software and to date includes layers for a digital terrain model, an aeromagnetic map (open file mining company data), a geological map (from the QMAP project), areas of hydrothermal alteration, locations of mineral deposits (GERM database), stream sediment geochemical analyses (REGCHEM database), and a lineament map derived from satellite remote sensing data.

The extraction of copper(II) from sulphate solution was investigated using LIX®984N in kerosene. The parameters that could affect the extraction, such as equilibrium pH, extractant concentration, salt concentration, various diluents, and temperature, were separately investigated. On the basis of slope analysis, the complex formed in the organic phase is proposed to be CuR2, where R is the anionic part of LIX®984N. The extraction equilibrium constant and Gibbs free energy ( G) of the extraction process were determined. The positive value of H obtained from temperature variation studies showed that the extraction process is endothermic. The extraction of copper was lowest when chloroform was used as the diluent. Separation and recovery of copper from a synthetic copper-nickel solution containing 6.35 g/L Cu(II) and 0.58 g/L Ni(II) was carried out using 20%(v/v) LIX® 984N. The separation factor ( = DCu/DNi) was found to be pH-dependent. A two-stage batch countercurrent extraction was carried out at an O:A ratio of 3:4 at equilibrium pH 1.05 for extraction of copper from copper-nickel solution, followed by copper stripping from the loaded organic phase with 15% H2SO4 at an O:A ratio of 3:1.

The re-use of waste water from coal preparation plant tailings is always desirable, but is generally problematic in terms of solid-liquid separation. Dewatering and disposal of coal slurry at a high percentage of moisture poses a major technological and environmental challenge to mining and mineral processing industries world-wide. Characterization and flocculation of these coal tailings reveals that the separation of fine coal tailings depends on factors such as size distribution, slurry viscosity, zeta potential, pulp density, circuit design, plant operating parameters, and the behaviour of solid particles in an aqueous medium. The present study was carried out on -600 mm coal tailings collected from a coking coal preparation plant of Jharia Coalfield, India, using anionic flocculent. Characterization studies revealed that the zeta potential was highest (-44 mV) at a pH of 9.0, the size range of the particles was 1.1?700 m, and the average ash content was 62.57%. Flocculation studies were performed at different solid concentrations, pH values, and polymer dosages. The results indicated an efficient settling rate of 178.15 mm/min at 8% solid (w/w) at a flocculent dosage of 32.50 g/t solid. The turbidity of the clear liquid obtained was 7.42 NTU.

To maintain longwall continuity, NRE Wongawilli Colliery extracted the approximately 20-year-old Thompson Mains and in doing so, 20 roadways were holed into during longwall retreat. The orientation of these roadways with regard to the longwall face varied between (i) a parallel alignment where the entire roadway was simultaneously subjected to a significant increase in vertical stress on holing and (ii) a more favorable high angle of alignment, meaning that only a portion of the roadway was subjected to an increase in vertical stress on holing. In addition, the longwall holed into and was recovered in one of the existing roadways. The geotechnical environment presented several additional challenges during longwall retreat. The orientation of the stress field resulted in a major horizontal stress notch on the maingate and an elevation in the major horizontal stress in front of the longwall face during the retreat up to an adjacent goaf edge. The presence of geological structure zones also resulted in both swings in the major horizontal stress direction and increased levels of roof deformation. The gate road support designs were based on commonly accepted strata management techniques and principles. The support designs in the hole-through roadways were based on empirical design models generated from (i) aconceptual geomechanical model of pre-driven hole-throughand recovery roads and (ii) a worldwide database on pre-driven hole-throughand recovery roads. Imperative to the success of extracting the panel was a sitespecific strata management process. In this regard, consideration was given to the following: roof displacement monitoring in the gate roads (in particular, Longwall (LW) Acceleration Position), roof-to-floor convergence monitoring in the hole-through roadways, the ability of the mine to limit downtime prior to and during holing by utilizing an Authority to Mine (ATM) type process, and the use of Trigger Action Response Plans (TARP).

To investigate the influence of orientation of crystal lattice on the bacterial leaching of pyrite crystals, single crystals of 100, 111 and110 plane orientations were used for the study. Experiments were carried out in the presence of a Thiobacillus ferrooxidans culture. The different corrosion patterns observed on the surfaces of the bioleached samples suggests a variation in cell-surface interaction from one crystal plane to the other. The surface corrosion patterns generally reflected the influence of the symmetrical arrangement of the atomic planes in the lattice on which they formed. The results indicate that the surface properties of mineral sulphides may control the evolution of corrosion patterns and consequently the initial oxidation process in acid bacterial leaching.

This Federal Bureau of Mines publication is a statistical analysis of all surface and underground coal mine fires reported in the United States from 1950 to 1977. Accounts of selected nonreportable fires and opinion data gathered via interviews with mine safety directors were separately analyzed. Both reported and nonreportable fires were analyzed by time trends, State, ignition source, burning substance, location in mine, equipment, detection, duration, injuries, fatalities, and successful extinguishing agents. It was found that the majority of all mine fires were electrical in origin. The equipment most frequently involved in underground fires was conveyor belts, and in surface fires, it was crushers and/or breakers. Underground fires occurred most often near the working face. Water and hand-portable extinguishers were the most common methods of extinguishment.

Procedures employing thiocyanate and dithiol complexes of molybdenum have been developed for the determination of the metal in the presence of large quantities of ferric iron. The procedures are developed for field application and it is possible to complete 200 analyses per day with laboratory accuracy. Use is made of sulphuric acid extraction and ascorbic acid reduction in the case of the thiocyanate procedure whilst the reducing system in the dithiol procedure is potassium iodide-sodium sulphite. Using a simple photometer the range of determination possible is 0-10~g for the thiocyanate procedure and 0-5 g for dithioI.INTRODUCTIONOf the many colorimetric procedures that have been developed for the determination of molybdenum only those using the thiocyanate or toluene-3, 4-dithiol complexes of the metal are sufficiently free from interference to be of use in geochemical prospecting. Rapid methods based on both these complexes 'have been developed at the. Broken Hill Division of The University of New South Wales as part of a general programme designed to improve geochemical procedures. Whilst speed rather than high accuracy is the important factor in prospecting, the aim of the programme is to develop procedures which will allow determination of 200· samples per man-day without loss of normal laboratory accuracy for the methods concerned.In most geochemical procedures visual estimation of a coloured complex is used in the determination of the quantity of metal present. At the high rate of sample determination of the improved methods this procedure places severe strain on the eyes. Codelco’s Salvador Project has been operating a block/panel caving mine for more than 50 years. This underground mining method dynamically mixes the ore and dilution. As a result, forecasting grades is difficult and achieving 100 per cent extraction of the reserves is practically impossible. A substantial volume of the ore mixed with dilution becomes remnant ore and remains to be subsequently extracted.A potential open pit mine is under evaluation at Codelco’s Salvador Project, which includes the extraction of remnant ore post-block caving extraction. An effective methodology has been implemented to estimate what is left behind once the underground mine has closed. A new mixing method using the Cellular Automata (Alfaro and Saavedra, 2004) approach has been used to allow estimation of the remnant ore with a sufficient level of confidence to be included as part of the open pit reserve.A remnant block model is created using elements such as in situ block model, drawpoint layouts, historical production records and the drawpoint extraction. Using this information, simulations of the extraction of the mine by month from 1959 to 2019 were completed, using different mixing scenarios and trying to replicate the tonnage and grade extracted.Finally, the remnant block model is categorised using a score card with four inputs to assess the risk of the estimation of this material into a category class (measured, indicated and inferred).CITATION:Villa, D and Farías, F, 2016.
