STATISTICAL data on injuries and employment pertinent to metal mines and to their mills, and/or processing plants are presented in this Information Circular for the calendar year 1960. The information pertains to metal mines, as well as ore-dressing plants and primary nonferrous smelters, refineries and reduction plants, and their auxiliary works. These data are voluntarily submitted annually to the Bureau of Mines by the operators, and contribute greatly toward the promotion of safety in the mineral industries. The data presented are classified according to the principal mineral produced and include information on copper, iron, lead-zinc, gold-silver lode, gold placer, uranium-vanadium and miscellaneous metals. A breakdown of miscellaneous metals by commodities is shown in table 19, page 41. The data also relate to workers engaged in production, exploration, development, construction, and maintenance and repair work, as well as supervisory personnel and office-workers at the mine or plant site. INTRODUCTION AND SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES An area in the midwest overlying abandoned room-and-pillar mine workings at, shallow depth has been experiencing subsidence movements with associated damage to surface structures. Other coal companies in the area have also been having similar experience. A 16 - month cooperative study between a mining company and the Department of Mining Engineering at SIUC was developed with the following objectives. 1) Determine the extent to which surface and subsurface movements were complete in the area, 2) Identify the mechanism(s) of subsidence in the area, 3) Determine the influence of geology and hydrology of the area on subsidence movements, 4) Observe the conditions of abandoned underground workings with a borehole TV camera, 5) Characterize the extent of damage and monitor possible progressive damage to selected surface structures, and 6) Make recommendations to a) minimize further damage to surface structures in the area, b) identify future areas that may be affected by these movements and c) modify mining systems to minimize these movements.

In June, 1989, the U.S. Bureau of Mines, undertook a 9-day evaluation of the tin resource potential of the Sleitat Mountain tin deposit. Significant tin-tungsten mineralization is associated with quartz-topaz-white mica-tourmaline greisen alteration of a multi-unit, 57 Ma, peraluminous, granite stock which intrudes Cretaceous Kuskokwim Group flysch deposits. The granite comprises marginal biotite-, intermediate biotite-muscovite-, and central zinnwaldite-granite units, interpreted as a zoned alteration system. Major vein mineralization is confined to two east-west-trending zones of steeply oriented tabular lenses of greisen interleaved with mildly altered granite. Cassiterite is the dominant ore mineral while arsenopyrite, loellingite, wolframite, pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and bismuth-oxides are present in minor to trace amounts. The north and south greisen zones are estimated to contain an inferred resource of 128 to 212 million lbs Sn in 28.6 million st of mineralized rock. An 1,800-lb representative bulk sample contained 0.37% Sn, 0.04% W and 17 ppm Ag and is considered an average grade estimate for the deposit. Drill testing by Cominco Alaska Exploration indicates that substantial widths of high-grade tin mineralization are included within the lower grade disseminated mineralization. Depth of deposit erosion is substantial and there exists a high probability for placer tin deposits.

Eight underground surveys were conducted to evaluate drum design, drum spray nozzle locations, ranging-arm sprays, water quantity, wetting agents, and cutting techniques. "Column flotation circuit engineering has matured to a good level of understanding regarding testing, scale-up and design. Some of the factors important to the process of implementing columns are addressed in this paper, highlighting the following issues• operating bias and the maximum achievable solids carrying rate for a column application.• internal circulating loads of full scale and pilot plant flotation columns• short-circuiting oflarge scale columns and the impact on separation selectivity• the number of stages in a column circuit and the impact on selectivity.The paper uses several case studies, from pilot plant to full scale implementation, to illustrate these design issues.1. IntroductionTen years ago, in 1984, there were very few column flotation installations world wide and the largest columns were about I . 5 to 2 m diameter or square. During the following decade there have been in the heighbourhood of 80 column installations that have been successful and profitable, as both retrofits and green-fields plants. Now, columns as large as 3 to 4 m are not uncommon. Examples of installations with many large columns include Escondida, with ten columns each at 4 m square, and P T Freeport Indonesia, with 21 columns: nine 3 m diameter columns, four 2.4 m diameter columns and, starting up in April I 995, eight 3.6 m diameter columns.During this growth period there have also been column installations that can be considered as failures. In the majority of these cases, the reason for their failure has been an insufficient installed capacity for applications where there is a high weight recovery of solids to the froth product These include zinc cleaning, copper cleaning and iron ore flotation (silica flotation from a feed that is 15 to 30 %Si02) An application with high weight recovery to the froth product makes column scale-up and circuit design more complicated. This is particularly so if a high degree of selectivity is also required while attaining a high weight recovery, which can happen with iron ore flotation in columns."

Port Gaspé is located on the back side of Gaspé bay and is protected by a natural sand barrier with a length of 2,5 km, from which it got its name, Gaspé Sandy Beach (1). Since 1904 the Gaspé region had a deep water wharf, initially very different, in fact, from the one existing just before the recent reconstruction (2). This wharf with a length of 228 m and a width of 23 m was build of timber cribs. The outside walls of these cribs had been doubled with a wooden wall, creosote impregnated to provide resistance to decay and to the attack of marine organisms (limnorias) (3). Fifteen years ago the upper part of the wood construction had to be removed, because of progressing rottenness and was replaced by an L-shaped reinforced concrete structure (4).

The opposition to the project has risen as a result of some political pressures and from public perceptions about the project’s necessity and its impact on the neighborhood. As a result of this controversy, the Underground Conservation Hall was quickly termed “Bredesen’s Bunker” by the Media. Close exposures for blasting, required by the Conservation Hall construction project, have been regulated by specifications that regulate seismic monitoring, pre-blast and post-blast inspections. Planned blasting for the project included blasting to a depth of 30 feet (9.14 meters) within 35 feet (10.67 meters) of the front of the newly renovated Tennessee Executive Residence. Excavation for the project found more competent rock at higher elevations than identified in test drilling which required blasting within 2 feet (0.61 meters) of the side of the Residence.

This paper describes the application of finite element analysis to simulate the static and quasi-static pile load tests in different drainage conditions. The possible effect of excess pore water pressure will be studied from the simulations results. The results show that the drainage condition has effect on the bearing capacity of a pile derived from the quasi-static pile load test. The excess of pore pressure reduces the pile toe resistance while it increases the pile shaft resistance. The factors which influence the effect of excess pore pressure are also discussed.

Detailed landform designs were completed for six (integrated) iron ore waste rock dumps at a Western Australian iron ore mine site to meet closure objectives and to optimise material movements for closure. The designs were based on specific physical and geochemical properties of waste material and the design was undertaken to enhance long-term stability of the dumps and optimise material movements, and therefore minimise closure cost. Construction of the re-shaped waste rock dumps have been completed. Following construction, surface material characteristics were found to deviate from those used in the design assessment. Materials present at surface following re-shaping were generally finer textured than those sampled for modelling. It is anticipated that the embankment slopes may experience increased rates of surface erosion compared to the rates predicted from modelling and used in design. The finer textured material is thought to be generated from exposing finer material that has migrated into the coarser matrix over time or that was not present in the sampled top surface of the landforms. This is due to armouring processes over time and this phenomenon is likely to recur following further wet seasons. The majority of the waste materials present in the waste rock dumps were subgrade banded iron formations (BIF) and chert, which are generally competent and geochemically inert. Some waste material was known to have an elevated risk of erosion but present in relatively small quantities. The presence of a large number of dolerite dyke swarms indicates appreciable volumes of dolerite were produced as waste from the pits. This material has an elevated risk of being highly erodible/dispersive. Clays and shales are also likely to be present in the dumps and are considered to be less competent material (relative to the BIF/chert). To improve mine roof bolt performance, Jennmar Corporation commenced the design and development of a new roof control sys- tem. This new system designated "Insta'l Compression", not only improves safety, but is more cost efficient due to reduced amounts of resin needed per bolt installation. In this paper the research and development of this new system will be outlined. Much of the information presented will be actual test data from various underground operations in Alabama, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania. The development of this system will also cover the design of a new expansion shell, resin compression ring, anti- friction washer, and upgrading of material specifications.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory-scale experiments to determine whether or not surface waters with a high organic content could be purified sufficiently to be used to replace the natural high-quality deep well water currently being used in the silica flotation step of phosphate rock beneficiation. Waters abundant in organic matter were collected from two central Florida streams, flocculated with a cationic polyethylenimine polymer, and processed in a sand filter. This treatment removed most of the organic materials from the water. Untreated surface water, treated surface water, and distilled water were used to compare the flotation response of the acid insolubles in an amine flotation circuit. Surface water treated with PEI-1000 was shown to be as effective as distilled water for the acid-insoluble-flotation step. Flocculation and filtration can therefore produce water suitable for amine flotation of quartz, which would permit substitution of surface water for deep well water.

"IntroductionGeneralThe Genesee Coal Mine is a joint venture of Fording Coal Limited and the city of Edmonton. The mine supplies thermal coal to the Genesee Generating Station operated by Edmonton Power and is located approximately 75 km southwest of Edmonton (Fig. I).Under the terms of the joint venture agreement, Fording Coal Limited has designed and developed the Genesee Coal Mine. Fording also operates the mine which has a minimum economic life of thirty-five years. Mine development started in the spring of 1987 with the construction of the dragline erection pad and mine service complex. Major development of mining areas was carried out in 1988 with the construction of haul roads, powerlines, topsoil recovery, etc. Mining officially commenced on December 14,1988.The mine produces 1.6 million tonnes of coal per year and employs 65 people. MiningGround conditions have turned out to be very poor, as expected with the majority of the overburden in the first few years a soft lacustrine clay with minor amounts of fine-grained glacial till. To compound matters, what was expected to be a relatively uniform coal subcrop turned out to be a very irregular erosional contact.The coal mined at Genesee is a sub-bituminous Class B thermal coal with approximately 16070 ash, 21% moisture, 8300 Btu/lb and 0.27% sulphur on an as-mined basis.The primary piece of mining equipment used at the Genesee Coal Mine is a M8200 walking dragline. It has an effective operating radius of 100.6 m, a 50.5 m3 bucket, and weighs approximately 3860 tonnes yielding a ground pressure of III KN/m2•Figure 2 illustrates schematically the single pass mining sequence presently employed at the Genesee Coal Mine. The M8200 is used to lift all coal out of the cut, the coal being placed in stockpiles on the prepared pad .This method maximizes coal recovery under the conditions where spoil failures due to poor material would otherwise put men and equipment at risk. The coal is subsequently loaded by the coal shovel operating on the same bench as the M8200 dragline and delivered to the plant as required.All mined areas, as required under Alberta Legislation, are to be returned to an agricultural land capability equal to or better than that which existed prior to mining. Reclamation activities, as a result, are an important and integral part of the mining process. A complete list of the primary mining equipment deployed at the Genesee Operations appears in Table I."

Introduction Froth flotation is one of the most common unit engineering operations in use today. Its aim is to upgrade the quality of coal by removing ash/pyrite and separating selected minerals from undesired gangue materials. Flotation has been successfully practiced at the industrial scale for more than 50 years. Its use is increasing due to the ever decreasing feed grades of the coals and minerals being processed. Flotation has also shown itself to be a flexible process that lends itself well to many solid/solid separations. Thus, with surprisingly little equipment modification, separations can involve very different particle sizes and densities, and relative weight ratios of materials to be separated. In addition, the flotation process is economic, especially when compared to size reduction, its associated precursor process. Flotation also lends itself to continuous operations with a given equipment configuration. The operation must exhibit an ability to vary feed rate of solid to the process by as much as 50% without a total collapse of separating efficiency. In addition, the mechanical flotation cell is scaleable from 2.8 to 57 or 85 m3 (100 to 2000 or 3000 cu ft) with surprising ease relative to other unit engineering operations over the same relative size increase. The separating medium used is water. Most of the chemicals required - pH regulators, frothers, collectors, activators, and depressants - are all relatively inexpensive and common. They are not usually used in large quantities. Froth flotation is certainly one of the most versatile and forgiving unit operations in the chemical, mining, and agricultural industries. The problem with the industrial flotation process is that it is fairly easy to get reasonable results and relatively difficult to get excellent results. Why is it so difficult to fine tune the froth flotation process? There are some obvious reasons and a few not-so-obvious factors. The obvious category would certainly contain the tendency of natural feed materials (ores and raw coals) to have variable physical, metallurgical, and surface properties. This occurs even when special care is taken to minimize such differences with blending. There is another obvious reason for difficulty. An inherent broadness of the feed particle size range to flotation results from using any of the common industrial-scalefine grinding devices - ball-, rod-, or autogenous mills. Research has been done into the chemical reagent and equipment aspects of flotation. It has shown strong interactions (limitations) of chemical reagents and equipment on larger and smaller particles. The point is that current flotation practice works best on average- or medium-sized feed particles. The greater the amount of large or small particles, or of both large and small, the more difficult it is to achieve excellent flotation results. Other reasonably obvious factors include: • variations in mineral type and liberation sizes; • water chemistry variations such as those involving Ca", C03, or Fe", or various soluble metal cations; • the presence of stray organic materials such as returning soluble reagents or partially degraded reagents in reuse water; • the lack of reliable on-line instrumentation for monitoring and control; • frequent equipment malfunctions of all types; • excessive feed rates for installed plant capacity; • poor operator interaction with the process; and • poor reagent dosage control. There are less obvious, but real limitations to flotation. These are inherent in the design and operating characteristics of the most common cell design in use today - the mechanical flotation cell. Individual performance attributes of the chemical reagents used, along with their manner of use, also carry limitations. The bulk of this paper will deal with chemical reagents and their use. Chemical reagents In 1979, the author and his co-workers were asked to invent and implement, at the industrial scale, new flotation reagent chemistry. After reviewing some of the literature (Sutherland and Wark, 1955; Klassen and Mokrousov, 1959; M. Fuerstenau, 1962; D. Fuerstenau, 1976; and Leja, 1982), a series of carefully controlled plant scale tests were set up. These tests were designed to understand existing reagent scale-up from the laboratory to the plant. They were to quantify at the plant level the effect of some of the more important, controllable chemical reagent factors (frother and collector type, frother and collector dosage, pH effects). "The Las Cristinas deposit in Venezuela contains reserves of 12.8 million ounces of gold at a grade of 1.20 g/t (Crystallex, 2004). The deposit comprises fully oxidized saprolite (SAPO) overlying a layer of sulphide-enriched saprolite (SAPS) which lies above carbonateleached bedrock (CLB) and carbonate stable or un-leached bedrock (CSB). Gold occurs at about the same concentration in all lithological groups. The bedrock units contain minor amounts of copper (about 0.1%) as chalcopyrite, while SAPO contains virtually no copper which has been leached and deposited in the SAPS zone.A previous owner began investigation of the Las Cristinas deposit in 1991. Over the next seven years, the company drilled 1,174 holes with a total length of 159 km, conducted extensive metallurgical testwork, including pilot plant operations, and completed feasibility studies. Construction was started in 1997 and again in 1999, however, on each occasion was suspended.Crystallex has been producing gold inVenezuela since the early 1990s. In 1997, Crystallex acquired Inversora Mael which had held two of the claims to the Las Cristinas concessions since 1986. In September 2002, Crystallex entered into a definitive agreement with the Corporación Venezolana de Guayana (CVG) to develop the Las Cristinas deposit.An extensive program of studies and testwork was started in late 2002 to determine an optimum development plan for Las Cristinas. Mine Development Associates, SNC–Lavalin Engineers and Constructors, SGS Lakefield Research Limited, J.R. Goode and Associates, and A. Laplante at McGill University acted as the main contractors.Because of the potential value of by-product copper, earlier flowsheets used carbon-inleach for SAPO, but processed all other ore types by flotation to produce a gold-copper concentrate with cyanide leaching of cleaner tailings to maximize gold recovery. Cyanide recovery was necessitated by the high copper content of the leach feed. Initial studies of available data by Crystallex revealed that direct leaching of all ore types would provide about 11% more gold recovery than the previously selected flotation route with reduced capital and operating costs.Bench and pilot-scale studies have confirmed that a SAG-ball mill-gravity-CIL route is very effective for all ore types and will give about 89% gold recovery. This paper describes the testwork conducted in 2003, discusses a 20,000 t/d plant design, and presents economic data."

It has been established that significant time-dependent stope convergence may occur over time periods of hours and days in certain hard-rock gold and platinum mines. The source of this time-dependent behaviour appears to be associated with both pre-existing discontinuities and with mining-induced fractures that form near the stope face. These induced fractures may be associated with blasting processes and may also be formed in response to high stress concentrations in the unmined regions immediately ahead of the stope face. In shallower platinum mining operations, time-dependent behaviour is, however, observed to be much less marked unless some form of specific mining-induced fracturing occurs. One particular case of considerable interest is the time-dependent behaviour that is found to be associated with the formation and deployment of crush pillars. The purpose of the paper is to present a simple limit-equilibrium computational model of this behaviour that is sensitive to both the formation sequence and the size of planned crush pillars in a mine layout. This model provides a useful means to optimize the sizing of crush pillars, and at the same time may be used to identify potentially hazardous circumstances in which pillars may not crush in a stable manner.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Cyprus- Plateau Mining Company, has conducted research to provide an alternative to traditional secondary support systems in a two-entry, yield pillar gate road. As recent as two years ago, it was impossible to imagine a gate road supported solely with internal high-strength resin-grouted cable supports that would virtually eliminate the necessity for crib or concrete external supports. The support system evaluated consisted of 1.6-m (5-ft) full-column resin-grouted bolts and 4.8-m (164) long cable supports installed in conjunction with wire mesh and "monster-mats." Cable loading and roof deformations were monitored to evaluate the behavior of the immediate and main roofs during first and second panel extractions. The stress and loading histories for the panels and yield pillar were monitored to evaluate the stress transfer and pillar performance in conjunction with the roof and floor behavior. The test results indicated that the designed support system successfully maintained the roof during the extraction of two longwall panels and dramatically reduced the cost of secondary support. This paper will describe the theory of a cribless support system, the advantages of cable supports, and present the pillar, roof, and floor measurements made to assess the support performance during longwall retreat mining.

Some large-scale mining companies in Ghana have adopted proactive management strategies in dealing with small-scale (galamsey) miners who have encroached on their concessions. This has been mainly achieved by ceding portions of the concessions held by the companies to the Minerals Commission of Ghana for licensing to the small-scale miners. This development has created an amicable relationship between the mining companies concerned and the galamsey miners in their host community. Ghana’s small-scale gold and diamond industry The small-scale gold and diamond mining industry in Ghana has existed for many centuries as an informal sector. Since the regularization of the activities of small-scale mining in 1989, two types of small-scale miners have emerged — legal and illegal.

Two 610 m (2000 ft) long tunnels were driven through water bearing silts, sands and clays beneath the Sacramento River using a 4.59 m (15.1 ft) diameter Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine (EPBM). Four sheet pile shored shafts were sunk with and without dewatering. The pre-cast concrete segmentally lined and grouted tunnels were driven down at 6% grades beneath the river flood protection levees, buildings, roads, a railroad and adjacent to a Freeway Viaduct. Details of the schedule, cost, shaft construction, TBM, tunnel construction, and installation methodology for the twin1.676 m (66 in) steel force main pipes and environmental constraints are provided.
