A wide variety of techniques and equipment are available for coring soft or poorly consolidated geological material. This report presents a comprehensive literature review and evaluation of these techniques and equipment. A potential user will find guidelines in this report to assist him in selecting sampling equipment. A bar chart shows what samplers have been used under what geological conditions, and gives the specific literature references. Two matrices rate the present techniques and equipment with respect to reported success for sampling specific materials, and with respect to several performance characteristics including complexity of use and core quality. These matrices are supplemented with tables of typical sampling equipment. and program costs. Near-term future developments are seen primarily in improved training of drillers, and in instrumenting the drilling operation to provide objective data on drilling characteristics. An extensive annotated bibliography, a catalogue of equipment suppliers including specifications and cost ranges, and a list of manufacturers and distributors are appended to the report.

Input-output analysis is a major branch of quantitative economics, and is used to analyse the flow of goods and services between production sectors in a national economy. Its purpose is to determine the relative value-adding capacity of each sector. The model has also, in recent years, found increasing use in assessing the environmental and ecological impact of development projects. It has, however, never been applied to individual production facilities, such as large mines, which themselves have complex economic structures, through which there is a flow of goods and services. Conventional cost and accounting systems, as used on mines, treat production sectors as separate cost centres, and do not determine the inter-relationships between them. This can lead to incorrect conclusions on the relative value of sectors and their impact on the total economic performance of the facility. This paper explains the basic principles of input-output analysis, and presents an example of its application to a simplistic model of a mine, which is used in the absence of any real data. The paper concludes that, by forcing definition of the value adding function of each sector, input output analysis will facilitate control of inputs, or costs. This will result in optimal application of resources and exploitation of ore reserves. The authors realise the model needs to be tested on an operating mine, and hope this paper will result in an opportunity to do so. The authors describe two stratiform intrusions within a two miles thick ophiolite belt, one of the many ophiolite (serpentine) belts of the eugeosynclinal sequences of the Kalgoorlie System (metamorphic age c.2700 million years). Unusually good evidence of gravitational differentiation involving cumulates for an Alpine type peridotite-gabbro intrusion has been obtained, in spite of modifications of the original igneous rocks imposed by regional metamorphism. Unmetamorphosed relics of cumulate rocks are a surprising feature of this occurIfence.'fhe differentiation process reflected in the layered sequences is compared to that of the Stillwater Intrusion, Montana. Phase, cryptic and rhythmic layering are recognized. The economic significance of this study lies not only in the possibility of nickel mineralization in this ophiolite belt, but also in that much detailed information on the nature of these belts, which is difficult to obtain in the case of the more altered and sheared rocks of the belts carrying gold and nickel ore deposits nearby, is gathered from the Yilmia occurrences.

Outsourcing? and ?sub-contracting? have become buzzwords in recent years, as SA industry becomes increasingly exposed to the global economy, and global competitiveness. In its effort to ?catch up? after years of relative isolation, there is a concerted effort to learn from global ?best practice?, in order for South African companies, and the SA economy, to become ?winners?. There seems nothing wrong with this approach at face value. Companies need to compete and be profitable if they are to remain in business. Failure will in the end mean bankruptcy, and the loss of jobs. However, if one interrogates the precise practices, and their implications for all concerned?not just shareholders and employers, but workers, communities, the environment, future generations, the national economy?then the picture can change dramatically. ?Best practice? for whom?

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, coke, smelting charge, optimization, ferrochrome The main consumer of ferrochrome is stainless steel production. Stainless steel must maintain a reasonable price against other competitive materials. Therefore, the ferrochrome price must be low enough and profitable for the producers of stainless steel. The investment and operational costs of ferrochrome production are greatly dependent on the availability of the process and the production rate. Thus the furnace size and production rate in submerged electric arc furnaces will be greatly increased in the near future. The ferrochrome production per furnace, e.g. at Outokumpu?s Tornio Works, increased from 30 000 t/a to 165 000 t/a in about 35 years. The same trend will continue globally but now much more quickly. The Outokumpu ferrochrome process at Tornio Works uses sintered chromite pellets and upgraded lumpy ore as a chromite source. Metallurgical coke is used as a reductant. Reliable smelting in a large furnace demands the correct charge composition and well-known characteristics of the charge components. The quality and electrical conductivity of cokes (normally used) has the most important role for the electrical conductivity of the smelting charge. The results of the measured electrical conductivity of different cokes and the smelting charge with many controlling factors are presented here. These measurements were performed over the years for our own purposes at the laboratory of Outokumpu Research Oy (ORC), in Pori, Finland.

"I had been requested earlier this year by MetSoc, our sister society of CIM, to contribute a chapter on technical developments in Canadian mineral processing over the past 50 years to their 50th Anniversary volume. Accepting the challenge of assembling such a chapter seemed at first a reasonably straightforward task, until one realises that the list of contributions by Canadians to mineral processing over this period has been more than just significant. It turns out to have been an extraordinarily fertile time for innovation and impact for Canadian-based technology. The list is necessarily a subjective one, however I had no trouble identifying twenty technology developments that are clearly outstanding, and there are undoubtedly others. As much as possible, I approached the individuals themselves who played key roles in each technology and asked that they tell the “story”. Without exception, all who were invited accepted eagerly and delivered more than I had hoped for. The technologies have been grouped into those that are truly Canadian innovations, such as the Knelson gravity concentrator and the McGill gas dispersion sensors in flotation, and technologies where Canadians and Canada played a very significant role in their success and implementation, such as AG/SAG grinding and ion-beam surface analysis. Also included are what may be termed technology transfer initiatives and institutions that have risen to a world class level, such as SGS Lakefield and the Canadian Mineral Processors Society of CIM. The challenge is now for the coming generation to continue this record of innovation and contribution to the industry, and that includes the (mostly) Canadian mining and metallurgical companies who have taken the longer term view and supported many of these initiatives, through their critical early years, with both financing and project sites for these ideas. Let us hope that the current trend of mining company globalization will not dampen their enthusiasm to participate. This plenary presentation will highlight many of these technologies, the individuals behind them, and their significance to the mineral processing industry."

The demands on development in London in recent years has led to the increasing use of top down construction methods in which there is a requirement to place steel columns to high tolerances into large diameter bored piles with deep cut-offs. A number of different proposals for the sequence of construction are being suggested. The tolerances requires for the steel columns are becoming increasingly stringent. This review examines a number of basic construction proposals and comments on the problems and solutions used by foundation contractors to provide the required foundations.

Since the end of World War n, many important developments have taken place in the investigation of the phenomenon of brittle fracture in mild steel. Fractures in certain classes of welded ships, in welded bridges, penstocks, etc., focussed a great deal of attention on the interrelationships of design factors, service conditions, and steel quality on the generation of catastrophic failures.Much publicity has been given these major failures, and there is perhaps a tendency to forget that mild steel, under certain conditions, as well known to behave in a brittle fashion in a wide range of everyday engineering applications.For instance, many who are connected with the haulage and lifting of heavy loads will be familiar with the bright "crystalline" fractures of crane hooks and chains which sometimes follow sudden jarring; those concerned with the heavy pressing and shaping of steel plate will not be unaware that at times sudden brittle splits or tears will develop for no obvious reason in, say, rolled pipes or in dishings.In fact it will be evident upon reflection that in many cases the conditions which mild steel has to withstand during processing into an engineering part or structure are more severe than those it wili be called upon to endure during service. In this sense brittle fractu;res in mild steel are much more frequent than are commonly supposed.Two modes of fracture are now generally recognised to occur in metals, namely, shear and cleavage. Spodumene was recovered from pegmatite by flotation in laboratory and pilot-plant tests using an anionic collector emulsion. A similar process applied to beryl pegmatite gave encouraging results.INTRODUCTIONOver the past two decades lithium and beryllium have aroused increasing interest in the metallurgical world. Both these light metals have potential uses in nuclear shielding and cooling and in lightweight alloys, and there is a growing demand for lithium chemicals for ceramics, air conditioning and lubricants. The use, technology and history of lithium has been surveyed by Schreck (1961).For many years, the only commercial production of lithium and beryllium was from pegmatite deposits amenable to hand cobbing. The most important minerals of these ores are spodumene and beryl, which are respectively lithium aluminium silicate and beryllium aluminium silicate. Norman and Gieseke (1940) investigated the treatment of lithium ores by froth flotation. The process of flotation of the pegmatite constituents away from the spodumene was applied commercially in 1951, and the operation has been described by Goter, Rainey and Hudspeth (1953). Subsequently, the flotation of the spodumene from the pegmatite was studied by Munson and Clark (1955) and Browning and McVay (1961), and this method has superceded the reverse flotation process commercially. Muskett, Tasker and Hobson (1962), in applying the method of Browning and McVay in pilot-scale tests, reported difficulty because of activation of quartz and felspar by iron salts introduced during milling of the ore.The flotation of beryl, reported by Ashton and Weir...

Optimum Colliery is an opencast strip mine producing 18Mt of bituminous coal per annum for the export and inland markets as well as for domestic power generation at the Hendrina PowerStation. Coal is exposed by four 60m3 and four 11m3 walkingdraglines and transported from the open cuts to the processing plants by twelve 130 ton coal haulers. Overburden and interburden areas are drilled by nine 250mm-diameter rotary drill rigs. Until 1997 all surveying tasks were conducted by electronictotal stations requiring accurate control points from which line-of-sight XYZ readings could be taken. In 1997 a GPS system was introduced which consisted of a fixed base station and two rovers. The rovers were able to perform most of the survey tasks assigned to total stations. In addition, two overburden drills were equipped with blasthole drill navigation systems, which includes the drill monitoring and material (strata) recognitions system. The rest of the drilling fleet will also be equipped with GPS systems. Blasthole positions are designed in the office based on survey and geological/geophysical information and transmitted via radio link to an industrial PC on the drills. Together with GPS positional data, both the planned and actual drill positions are displayed on an LCD screen. This eliminates the need for surveyed hole positions to be staked before drilling, and for actual hole positions to be surveyed after drilling. As holes are drilled, performance and rock property data transmitted back to the office. Future applications will include GPS monitoring of dragline positions and pad elevations. GPS receivers on the draglines will utilize the existing base station to calculate and transmit XYZ co-ordinates. Another application will be locating of boreholes in the field prior to the pumping of specified explosive charges into the blastholes. Charging instructions for each blasthole will be loaded into the computer on the explosives truck which will be equipped with a GPS system for hole identification.

A thermodynamic model has been developed to model the desilverising process of lead by the addition of zinc during lead refining, whereby silver-zinc solid solutions are formed, and floats out of the dissolved zinc/silver in the lead bath. The solubility of silver-zinc solid solutions in lead decreases with falling temperature. A number of variations and modifications of the desilverising process are modeled, and applied to a wide range of silver contents in lead bullions in the industry.

The Glenwood Canyon is a 13 mile long river gorge formed by the Colorado River approximately 2 miles East of Glenwood Springs, Colorado and approximately 150 miles West of Denver Colorado, (See Drawing #1). The canyon walls rise some 800 feet from the river elevation on either side of the river. The South-side river bank is occupied by the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad. The Northside is currently occupied by completed sections of Interstate 70 and US Highway 6. The railroad was built in the late 1800's and a hydroelectric power generating station was built in about the center of the canyon in the early 1900's. The Highway 6 platform was completed in the 1930's. The design and alignment for Interstate 70 thru Glenwood Canyon began in the early 1970's. The Highway thru Glenwood Canyon was designated a scenic Highway by the United States Congress, thereby allowing certain deviations from standard Interstate requirements. Environmentalists objections to the construction of Interstate Highways thru Glenwood Canyon resulted in especially careful design to avoid adverse environmental impacts. As a result, in many areas the new Highways will have restored the canyon to its more native configuration than what was the case in the building of the US 6 Highway platform.

The stoping of platinum orebodies in the Bushveld has in the past been accomplished by using in-stope pillars to ensure stability of the workings. In the future, the use of continuous mining machines to mine the platinum orebodies is probable. It is not envisaged that such machines will cut in-stope pillars. This paper describes the alternative support systems that will replace the pillars and the stope geometries that will be required for this type of mining. The paper describes how the support resistance provided by in-stope pillars in current mining was determined and then evaluates support systems that can substitute for these pillars. Conceptual layouts based on existing breast mining layouts are presented. The layouts consist of panels of up to 100 m face length between rigid strike stabilizing pillars. A number of design charts are then proposed that allow for the design of appropriate support systems.

Como parte de los estudios línea base realizados por MWH Perú S.A. para el proyecto aurífero Chucapaca de las Canteras del Hallazgo en el distrito de Ichuña de la región Moquegua, Perú, se investigó el origen de boro, alta salinidad y otros componentes que perjudican la aptitud de los ríos Ichuña y Tambo para irrigación y otros usos. En este sentido, se encontró que la calidad de agua es perjudicada principalmente por altas concentraciones de sodio, entre otros, precipitándose como hidróxidos de estos metales debido al pH neutro en el río. En ese sentido, el presente texto describe la relación de este impacto químico con los manantiales entre el Cerro Chucapaca y el cañón del Río Ichuña/ Alto Tambo, ubicados al Norte de Moquegua, donde presentan la característica distribución de diferentes tipos de aguas volcanogénicas sobre un sistema de convección hidrotermal de agua meteórica profunda reciclada, calentada y movida por una cámara magmática andesítica que aporta calor y gases.

This, of course, does not give us a clue as to the site conditions the foundation contractor faced in doing his work. Safe and efficient coal extraction requires advanced radar subsystems that can be mounted on cutting drums of coal cutting machines. A look-ahead radar (LAR) must solve the radio geophysics problem of transmitting an electromagnetic (EM) wave through at least 20 feet (6.1 meters) of coal to an air- or water-filled void. The reflected EM wave must be processed in the radar electronics to determine the physical distance to the void. Horizon sensing enables selective cutting near the undulating sedimentary rock boundaries of the coal bed to address coal quality and ground control issues. Both sensors require subsystems for dynamic electric power generation, real-time measurement of drum rotation angle, detection of reflected EM waves, and processing to determine distance through coal and RF modem transmission of measured data to the mining machine. This paper describes the development of the subsystems and field test results.

The mining industry in South Africa has developed its own environmental guidelines in the form of an Aide-Mémoire1,which is an extension of the previous rehabilitation provisions to include all aspects of the environment and all phases of a mining operation. This development, at the time, recognized an international trend towards the formalization of environmental management in mining practice, which resulted from the realization of the large environmental liabilities that mines could face, particularly on closure. Over the past decade the international environmental focus in the mining industry has moved from operational management, to the reduction of liability on mine closure. Mine closure guidelines are being developed internationally by nations (for example, SRK, 19982) and by large mining groups (for example, Rio Tinto, 19983). In South Africa the Department of Minerals and Energy (DME) is presently reviewing the Aide-Mémoire to bring it in line with international and local developments and a separate mine closure plan is being considered.

The Nutley Quarry Trunk Sewer Project is a good example of a tunnel that went through difficult and complex ground. The 2 m (7ft.) diameter and 840 m (2,750 ft.)long tunnel passed through soft ground, mixed face, and hard sandstone. The soft ground and mixed face tunneling provided several challenges. During excavation of the tunnel, the Contractor encountered a number of unanticipated large boulders. In addition, the length of the mixed face portion of the tunnel increased by 100%. The Contractor tried various construction techniques to overcome the difficult ground conditions and complete the project. The tunneling progress was slower than expected. The Contractor claimed extra costs for differing site conditions. Through discussions and negotiations between the Contractor, Engineer, and Owner, all of the changed condition claims were settled before the construction of the project was completed. This paper addresses the difficult ground conditions, claims evaluation, and how they were resolved by cooperative efforts between the Contractor and the Owner/Engineer.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research on guidance systems for computerized haulage in underground mines. This report describes the process of component selection, installation and testing, perception algorithm development, and steering control algorithm development, to produce a real-time steering control system for an articulated haul truck for underground mining. Ultrasonic transducers were mounted on the truck to provide perception data by measuring the distance to the ribs. Linear potentiometers mounted inside the steering cylinders measured the steering angles. Algorithms, implemented on an inexpensive, robust onboard computer system, analyzed the data and controlled the steering via an electro-hydraulic proportional valve. The steering algorithm presented follows a zone defined by the relative position between the truck and a rib. Experimental verification of the ability to follow the zone in a test corridor on the Colorado School of Mines campus is presented. The automatic steering system successfully negotiated straight sections, curves, and the transition zones between straight and curves with the truck in first and second gears. The resulting real-time automatic-steering system can be applied to many underground articulated machines.
