After the explosion at Middelbult Colliery, South Africa in May1993, which claimed 53 lives, the South African Coal Mining Industry and the Safety In Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC) united forces to establish a surface facility to develop and test on-board flame suppression systems for continuous miners and roadheaders. The first test that was conducted in this newly constructed test tunnel at the Kloppersbos Research Facility, CSIR was in July 1995.Since then 70 tests have been conducted using the facility and have focused on on-board active ignition suppression systems for continuous miners (CM) and road heading (RH) machines to enhance the safety of South African mine workers in collieries. These suppression systems are mounted on the CM or RH machine and detect the occurrence of an ignition by means of light-sensitive sensors. The electronic signal from the sensor triggers the suppression system, creating a flame-suppression curtain, containing and extinguishing the flame in the immediate vicinity of the ignition. Forty-three tests have been conducted with an active on-board suppression system present inside the test tunnel. Since flame propagation speed is an extremely important parameter, the CSIR-Miningtek made the results of the test programme available for re-analysis. Flame speed depended on whether a machine was present in the heading or not, the geometry of the heading and the volume and composition of the explosive mixture of gas. Flame speeds of up to 190 m/s were recorded. However, the active suppression systems were almost always successful in containing flame propagation.

This is a new era for the minerals industry. Never before has there been more need for effective communication. So said Robert Anderson, chairman and chief executive officer of Hanna Mining Co. He was speaking to the American Mining Congress's Communication Workshop. The question is whether there is enough industry concern to meet the challenge. Anderson observed that increased workshop attendance, in continuing tough times, reflects the industry's concern for communication. But, why were students, faculty, engineers, supervisors, and managers not at the conference? Communication applies to every manager, Anderson said. But he was the only operating manager present. And only one company sent operating supervisors. The remaining conference participants were public relations personnel, generally with nonmining backgrounds. And the program dealt mostly with public relations issues. Role of Communication in the Minerals Industry. It is well known that the minerals industry faces economic, political, and social problems. Economic shifts and foreign competition have created an international minerals industry and an international marketplace. This, in turn, calls for worldwide communication. Other factors effecting communication are: • Governmental protectionism as well as regulatory reforms call for increased interaction with governing officials. • Changing social values have created environmental issues and anti-industry attitudes. This intensifies the need for improved public relations. • Traditional work values are shifting towards self-actualization and humanistic movements. The work force is better educated and more informed. Employees demand more satisfaction, equality, and job autonomy. • The mining industry's task of managing its human resources is complicated by layoffs, job uncertainties, and bleak outlooks concerning employee morale and motivation. Technology and Information for a New Era As noted, this is a new communications era, one propelled by technology and information. Technology has led to reduced demand for raw materials by developing substitutes. Copper demand, for example, will never fully recover. Copper cables are replaced by fiberoptics; copper transmission lines, with aluminum. Technology has shifted the US from traditional to high tech and service industries. The speed, frequency, and scope of information transmission have greatly increased. But the most significant characteristic of this information is not the pace of advancing technology. It is the dramatic increase in the importance and frequency of our personal transactions. Knowledge has replaced raw materials and capital as the strategic resource. Information has replaced energy as the transforming resource. And the game against nature has become an interpersonal game (D. Bell, Post-industrial society, Physics Today, '76). In Megatrends, John Naisbitt says that information will soon double every 20 months. So, professionals will become "information workers." And communication will be the life channel of the information age. Thomas Wolfe said you can't go home again. Hanna Anderson said we are, indeed, facing a new day. It will never again be "business as usual." We must move into the information age with the rest of society. We cannot trust that the world will continue to rely on our products. Nor can we place the responsibility and control for problems and solutions outside the minerals industry. Improved communication is not a panacea. But, Anderson said, it is critical to the minerals industry. What is Communication? The word communication is overused. It is applied to every aspect of our lives. Satirist Tom Lehrer got sick of hearing about the need to communicate. He said, "It seems to me that if someone is having all that trouble communicating, the very least he can do is shut up!" Obviously, we cannot follow that advice (though we might wish that some others would do so). Communication is always going on. It is inevitable. Yet we have many misconceptions about com-

Shafts into coalbeds usually produce the most methane, so the information in this chapter applies primarily to shafts at coal mines. Nevertheless, much of the information is relevant for noncoal mines that have methane in the mine or in the overlying strata. METHANE IN SHAFTS EXCAVATED BY CONVENTIONAL MEANS (DRILL, BLAST, MUCK) [ ] Ventilation. Shafts excavated by conventional means are ventilated with a fan on the surface connected to ductwork that extends down into the shaft (Figure 9–1). Shafts into coalbeds should have ventilation systems designed to handle the higher gas flows to be expected as the shaft excavation passes through any over-lying gas-containing strata and nears the coal-bed to be mined. "Wireless communication in the mineral processing environment is not as simple as it is in the home or office environment. The correct design of a wireless network in the mineral processing environment can offer a more flexible and lower cost installation than the transitional fiber networks. However with the flexibility of a wireless solution, also comes some limitations. By reviewing the plant requirements along with weighting the wireless benefits and limitations it is possible to design a network that combines the robustness of a wired solution with the mobility of a wireless solution. This paper addresses some wireless design considerations and it looks at some real life examples in the following areas: •,Meshed wireless network for high levels of redundancy •,Wireless instruments (such as HART, Modbus and others) •,Portable devices for mobile operators •,Network monitoring for plant personnel (it’s no longer just for IT people) INTRODUCTION Typical networks used in the mineral processing environment consist of a fiber network infrastructure with industrial switches used to connect the network devices. These fiber networks can be redundant or put into a ring topologies to offer a higher level of availability. Fiber networks have the benefits of: •,Immunity to noise from power and grounding issues •,Ability to span long distances (2km for multimode fiber and 20km for single mode fiber) •,Maintainable “off-the-shelf” technology Fiber networks however have some drawbacks, such as: •,Relativity high initial installation cost for cable trays, poles, trenches and pulling and termination of cable. •,Fixed geographic topology, adding future fiber drops may be challenging and expensive. •,Mobile users are not considered. Integrating a wireless network with a fiber network can offer the best of two worlds, a reliable high speed backbone for mission critical activities and a wireless network for remote applications and mobile users."

This paper presents research results on assessment of environmental impact of digging and loading equipment in surface coal mining. Environmental impact is accessed through the equipment exhaust and dust emissions, and sound level. Exhaust emission is related to carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Dust generation is expressed through the particulate matter PM10 and total suspended particulate matter (TSP), while sound is presented through the sound pressure level. Modeling of environmental impact of digging and loading equipment is conducted in Microsoft Visual Studio.NET software package. This research is a part of a boarder project on development of software system for the selection of productive, cost-efficient and eco-friendly mining systems, which is sponsored by the Appalachian Research Initiatives for Environmental Sciences (ARIES). The research work presented here may be used by mining professionals to aid in quantifying environmental impact of digging and loading equipment and determinate strategies for reducing its overall impact.

For certification of blast resistant windows, current tests consist of arena tests or large air gun tests. Arena tests involve the detonation of more than 1000 pounds of explosives with windows placed in the range of hundreds of feet. The result of an arena test is a loading on a window consistent with an expected industrial or terrorist blast. Due to the nature of this type of test, only a limited number of facilities are available and operational costs can be extremely high. Air gun tests involve the use of compressed air and a failing diaphragm fired through a large tube. Although this test is more cost effective and easier to administer with lower environmental impacts, it is not an explosive loading and does not create a negative phase on the tail of the pressure pulse. Simply using a small charge in close proximity to the window is not a viable option either. The pressure peak can be reached using this method, but the duration of the pressure pulse is such that the positive phase impulse is on the order of ten times less than that for an arena test.

The expert system component of Knowledge Base System supports the analysis and interpretation phases of ventilation design with an algorithmic program used for the solution of alternate design. The paper describes the ?ES-VENT? knowledge based system developed at Central Mining Research Institute, Dhanbad, India for an on-line diagnosing of the ventilation problems using the ?IITMRULE? expert system development tool. In the ?IITMRULE? expert system tool, it has been decided to use a backward chaining reasoning process to reach the goal state i.e. the final conclusion. ES-VENT system is made of three modules: On-line Data, Diagnostics and KBS. Each module is being a collection of several programs. The paper mainly deals with the parameters affecting the ventilation of underground mines such as air-velocity, air pressure, temperature, dust, and humidity and gas contents. The graphical presentation of these parameters on the computer and the interactive part of the developed program is expected to help a ventilation officer to determine the changes in a ventilation circuit necessary to bring the mine ventilation to the desired value. Once such changes are physically effected, the display will indicate if the changes have brought the desired effect or not on ventilation. U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel examined mines, prospects, and mineralized areas to determine mineral resources and resource potential in and adjacent to the North fork Smith RARE II study area. Most mineral resources identified in this area are in laterites, highly-weathered residual soil zones. In the RARE II area, resources of nickel, cobalt, chromium, and magnesium were identified at 15 laterite properties and chromium resources at one chromite mine. Other commodities include copper, gold, silver, and mercury (fig. 1). Approximately 1,100 lode and 1,200 placer claims have been located in or adjacent to the area. Most placer claims are for literites. There are no patented claims or mineral leases. Forty laterite deposits on 15 ,properties within the RARE II area (fig. 2) contain about 16 million tons of identified marginal reserves and subeconomic resources containing nickel, cobalt, chromium, an magnesium (table 1). Most deposits have keen explored and are currently claimed. California Nickel Corporation is developing laterites on Gasguet Mountain, within and adjacent to the southeastern and western parts of the study area. If this project proceeds to production, a laterite processing plant on Gasquet Mountain would enhance the minability of other deposits in the study area. The Climax, PFM, DF, and Stone Corral properties (fig. 1, nos. 1, 6, 9, and 23) have deposits of sufficient tonnage and grade to attract mining interest; resources at these properties are in and adjacent to the RARE II area.

The use of industrial minerals by the chemical industry as raw materials for manufacturing and in processing spans a wide assortment of minerals. This chapter aims to supplement rather than duplicate the commodity chapters. Its objective, to describe the uses of industrial minerals in the manufacture of chemicals, is attained by considering minerals used by the chemical industry in terms of the chemical element required and by giving particular emphasis to market factors. The mineral aspect, which is covered in the commodity chapters, is subordinated and attention is focused on the chemical and market aspects. Condensing this broad subject into a few pages permits treating only the most important elements derived from industrial minerals. The elements derived from petroleum, hydrogen and carbon, which quantitatively dominate as raw materials for the chemical industry, are omitted, as are the metallic elements and the minerals covered in other "use" chapters such as phosphorous, potash, and nitrogen for fertilizers and titanium dioxide for pigments. After eliminating on this basis, our definition leaves six elements of major importance: boron, bromine, chlorine, fluorine, sodium, and sulfur. These elements are treated individually under separate headings. Salt brines have particular importance as raw material sources for the chemical industry as shown in Table 1 "Salt Brine Derivatives" (Anon., 1967), which charts the chemical compounds derived from four types of brines: (1) Owens Lake type brines which are sources of boron and sodium compounds; (2) Midland type brines from which bromine, iodine, and chlorides of calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium are derived; (3) Searles Lake type yielding boron, bromine, lithium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium compounds; and (4) Silver Peak type produced mainly for lithium. Table 2 (Jones, 1973) affords an overview of the chief industrial minerals, the chemical products derived from them, and end uses of the products.

Large heap leach operations around the world contain significant under-leached metal values that present recovery challenges to operators. The first challenge is to find the location of the highest inventory. High resolution resistivity ? has proven sensitive enough to detect such zones in the interior of heap leach pads to target treatment or re-leaching. Newmont Mining Corp. has adapted the high pressure fracturing technology, used in oil wells to stimulate select zones in heap leach pads to add reagents in 3-D for re-leaching, changing zonal chemistry for improved recovery and heap closure. High Resolution Resistivity ? is able to subsequently monitor injected solution flow and determine directional permeability during Hydro-Jex stimulation. The combination of these technologies has shown strong economic success, for selecting targets in the heaps and monitoring solution application. These technologies are now available to the mining industry for adoption.

Human-caused global warming has become the environmental cause celebre of the early 21st century. The strong warming alarmist camp currently includes the United Nations, most Western governments, most of the free press, many large corporations (including Enron, before it failed), the major churches, most scientific organisations and a large portion of general public opinion. This phalanx of support notwithstanding there is no scientific consensus as to the danger of human-induced climate change. There is, therefore, a strong conflict between the level of public alarm and its scientific justification. How can this be? In a democracy, the media serve to convey to the public the facts and hypotheses of climate change as provided by individual scientists, governmental and international research agencies, and NGO and other lobby groups. In general, the media have promulgated an alarmist cause for climate change; they have certainly failed to convey the degree of uncertainty that is characteristic of climate science, or a balanced summary of the many essential facts that are relevant to human causation. Climate change is as much a geological as it is a meteorological issue. Natural climate changes, both warmings and coolings, are indeed a societal hazard. We usually deal with geological hazards by providing civil defence authorities and the public with accurate, evidence-based, general information about events like earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and floods, and then by adapting to the effects when a damaging event occurs. As for other major natural disasters, the appropriate preparation for extreme climate events is to mitigate and manage the negative effects when they occur, and especially so for dangerous coolings. Attempting instead to æstop climate changeÆ by reducing human carbon dioxide emissions is a costly exercise of utter futility. Rational climate policies must be based on adaptation to dangerous change as and when it occurs, and irrespective of its sign or causation. The issue now is no longer climate change as such, the reality of which will always be with us. Rather, the issues are, first, the failure of the free press to inform the public about the true facts of human-caused climate change and of the dangers posed by natural climate change. And, second, the vested interests held by many of the groups of warming alarmists. These interests include not only the obvious commercial ones, but also the many scientists and science managers who have discounted or remained silent about the huge uncertainties of the human-caused global warming hypothesis because it suited them to do so. Public opinion will soon demand an explanation as to why experienced editors and hardened investigative journalists, worldwide, have melted before the blowtorch of self-induced guilt, political correctness and special interest expediency that marks the sophisms of global warming alarmists.

Copper concentrates contain an increasing amount of arsenic, as the older sources of cleaner ores are depleted. At the same time, the market-determined price penalties on arsenic rich concentrates are rising due to limited arsenic treatment capacity at smelters and increasingly stringent environmental emissions limits, necessitating arsenic removal from the copper concentrates. Heating the concentrate to about 700°C can remove significant amounts of arsenic (as elemental and/or sulfide); however, it is important to achieve that removal economically and with due consideration to post-roasting arsenic (toxic waste) treatment. A comparison is made among different roasting options (kilns, multi-hearths and fluid beds) to qualify their potential application to arsenic roasting of copper concentrates. Both direct and indirect methods of heating as well as inert, air and oxygen atmosphere options are considered. Technology comparisons are made with respect to the roaster’s operation, its off-gas treatment and arsenic stabilization. INTRODUCTION In the last twenty years, the arsenic content in globally produced copper concentrates have risen steadily due to the depletion of cleaner ores and the increase in complex concentrate production. Smelter contracts typically limit arsenic to less than 0.5wt%, with a penalty paid per unit of additional arsenic and other contaminants such as antimony. While penalties can vary, they can be on the order of $70/dry metric tonne of concentrate per 1% of arsenic. Strategies used by miners to avoid the price penalties have been to blend clean and complex concentrates, and to remove arsenic from complex concentrates to achieve smelter limits. Arsenic can be removed from copper concentrates by the heat-induced decomposition of the predominant enargite mineral (Cu3AsS4) at ~700°C. Roasting at such elevated temperature is a commercially proven option, but still suffers from process, cost and environmental challenges. After roasting, the released arsenic sulfide fumes can be separated from most of the entrained concentrate dust in cyclones. Then, the As2S3 laden off-gas can be oxidized to generate a still volatile oxide (As2O3), which can be further separated from the residual concentrate dust in a hot electrostatic separator. Next, the off-gas can be cooled with air or water, to either deposit the arsenic oxide in a dry or dissolved state. Dissolved arsenic acid can be oxidized to As(V) and reacted with iron to yield a stabilized ferrihydrite precipitate or scorodite that can be safely disposed. In the case of dry arsenic trioxide, it can be mixed with reactants (e.g. iron) and fluxes before thermal stabilization in a glass matrix, thus eliminating the need for costly oxidation.

The phenomenon of spontaneous combustion is one of the major hazards encountered in underground coal mines both from the safety aspects and on economic grounds. Every occurrence, however small, if not tackled effectively in the early stages can develop into open fire, or explosion of gas or coal dust. In terms of economy, even dealing with small incidents may be costly in terms of labour and materials, and in case of a sealing off of a district being necessitated, the loss of face equipment and sterilization of reserves is potentially great. Therefore, expense and effort in prevention and detection of such heating, together with a high state of readiness for dealing with likely event, is completely justified and may be considered as a sound investment. In order to achieve this investment, it may be worth to pinpoint the centre of the fire occurring due to autogenously heating which is supposed to be great assistance to inert it at a least cost and time. Therefore, it is the aim of this work to model the spontaneous combustion in the goaf.

In September 1985 we published a questionnaire asking about the content of MINING ENGINEERING and about your interests. By Dec. 10, our cutoff date, we had 430 responses, representing about 1.5% of the 28,238 people who received the September issue of ME. In the data that follow the tabulation and percentages are based on the number of individuals who responded to the particular question. About ME Through responses to the questionnaire, we were hoping to learn more about you, your interests, and how the magazine could better serve you. Those of you who responded told us something positive - you look at or read the magazine. Of the 430 respondents, 428 or 99.5% indicated that they had read or looked through the July and/or August issues. Those of you who refer to the magazine once are 207 or 48.5%. Those of you who refer to the magazine two or three times are 193 or 45.2%. Those of you who refer to the magazine four or more times are 27 or 6.3%. How much time do you spend reading the magazine? Of those responding to this question: 64 spent up to 1/2 hr 15.0% 224 spent up to 1 hr 52.6% 115 spent up to 1-2 hr 27.0% 23 spent more than 2 hr 5.4% In an informal survey among our staff, we determined that most people spend 1/2 to 1 hr reading magazines to which they subscribe at home. In response to the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, mandatory noise standards have been developed that specify time-noise limits of mine personnel exposure. Most affected by elevated noise levels is the pneumatic roof bolter operator, both in terms of levels near or in excess of 115 dbA and in terms of length of exposure. Therefore, the principal emphasis of this Bureau of Mines report is on pneumatic drill noise control. It is not the intent of this report to suggest any drill redesign; instead, methods are suggested to reduce the noise level by complementing existing machines. An integral muffler system and a separate muffler system were tested in an attempt to lower pneurnaric drill noise levels. Pneumatic drills, when new, operate at about 115 dbA when drilling in sandstone. Using the drill muffler systems, it was possible to decrease the noise level of a 115 -dbA s rope drill to approximately 100 dbA.

In 2011, two historic outcrop rocks known as Teffé and Itapema located in the navigation channel of the Port of Santos, Brazil (Latin America’s largest port) – were excavated by drilling and blasting techniques. Sensitive structures - a passenger terminal and an 80-year old warehouse were exposed to ground vibrations generated by underwater blasting. The warehouse had existing structural problems due to a combination of factors such as the presence of an unstable soil, previous repair work, and intense seismic events generated by the daily traffic of cargo trains nearby during eight decades. Since the worsening state of the structure was attributed to ground vibration from underwater blasting, particle velocity time histories generated by underwater blasting and by passing trains were monitored. By analyzing the energy spectral density of these events using spectrograms, it was possible to observe the seismic energy levels in time and spectral domains. Since the hysteretic energy dissipation by structures is related to the duration of the seismic event and the limited dissipation capacity of the structure, one could expect damages to appear in the structure once energy levels exceeded this dissipation capacity. As the quantity of energy transmitted to the structure is proportional to the duration of the seismic event, the transmission of seismic energy to the warehouse structure over time was more significant in the case of the train-induced ground vibrations (several minutes) than those generated by the underwater blasting (few seconds). Thus, for the warehouse, train-induced ground vibrations have a larger impact on the structure rather than ground vibration generated by controlled underwater blasting techniques.
