The research described in this Bureau of Minus report was conducted to improve the chromium-iron ratio of offgrade chromite. Two methods were used: (1) Iron was selectively reduced from chromite by carbothermic reduction in an electric-arc furnace, and (2) a mixture of carbon, chromite, and sometimes fluorspar was chlorinated to remove a substantial part of the iron. Chromite concentrate from the Mouat deposit in Montana and from northern California was used in the test work. Chromium-bearing slag and chromite that had been beneficiated by a roast-leach process were each smelted to produce high-carbon ferrochromium. Iron was selectively reduced in a laboratory-scale., electric-arc furnace. Carbon additions to the smelting charges varied from 40 to 100 percent of the stoichiometric requirement, and slag basicities were varied from 0.4 to 1.0 chromium-iron ratios of more than 4:1 were obtained with 89 percent recovery of chromium in a chromium-bearing slag.

Quarries around Auckland have reached or are reaching the ends of their lives, which raises issues about rehabilitation. Significant volumes of 'cleanfill' are generated by the City, particularly during phases of urban renewal and development. Emplacement of the fill in quarries removes the problem of fill disposal and provides an opportunity for restoration of the quarry site.There is a compatibility between quarrying and cleanfilling because at quarries:Truck routes are already established Neighbours are accustomed to the effects and appropriate buffer distances have been established Bringing fill into a site attracts aggregate sales and is very efficient. Fill originates from construction sites and ad-hoc excavations and therefore it is not surprising that sampling has shown the quality to be variable. Both Winstone and the Auckland Regional Council have surveyed undisturbed soils in the region to attempt to determine natural background levels of common contaminant substances. Comparison of these levels with delivered fill shows that a high proportion of delivered materials can be regarded as mildly contaminated. Therefore the term 'cleanfill' is, in the Auckland region at least, a misnomer and the term 'managed fill' has been adopted.Historically and presently the only control on quality of 'cleanfill' has been some visual inspection. This leaves the fill operator open to potential liability for creating a contaminated site. Implementation of controls at WinstoneÆs operations has progressed slowly, over some ten years. This is mainly due to the perception that mobility of contaminants within and out of the landfill will be very limited because of the near-neutral pH and abundance of clay minerals in the fill. The methods of control and results of environmental risk assessments at WinstoneÆs Puketutu Island Quarry will be briefly described.

The catalysed direct reduction of copper sulphide with carbon and lime was investigated in the range 850-1000 degrees C using Cu2S-CaO-C and Cu2S-4CaO-4C reaction mixtures. The effects of the catalytic additives K2CO3, Li2CO3, Na2CO3, NaF, Na2SO3 and the ternary eutectic (K,Li,Na)2CO3 were determined. Potassium carbonate, sodium fluoride and the ternary appear to be the most effective catalysts for the direct reduction process. The rate enhancement of the catalysed carbothermic reduction of copper sulphide in the presence of lime was explained in terms of the catalysis of the Boudouard reaction

There are no identified mineral resources in the Italian Peak RARE II areas, and there are no producing or developing mines within or adjacent to the study area. Several prospects are in RARE II area M-4945, Idaho, but none were found in the area I-1945, Montana. The Viola Mine (fig. 1, no. 15) vicinity and the Heart Mountain vicinity along the west and south borders, respectively, are being prospected. There has been no recorded production from mines within the study area, but between $2.5 million and $5.0 million worth of lead, silver, and zinc were produced in the adjacent Birch Creek district - dominantly from the Viola Mine - from 1882 to 1889 (Anderson and Wagner, 1944, p. 14). The Viola and other mines in that district are possibly, on basin-margin, carbonate-hosted, lead-silver-zinc deposits stratabound within the Devonian Jefferson Formation. Previous studies have considered them to be hydrothermal, replacement orebodies. Mineral occurrences in the Heart Mountain area are possibly black-shale hosted uranium-vanadium deposits in the Mississippian-Devonian McGowan Creek Formation or perhaps the underlying Devonian Three Forks Formation. The Jefferson and McGowan Creek Formations underlie many scattered segments of the study area. The deposits and occurrence; are not sufficiently exposed to determine tonnage and grade, but sampling indicated moderate resource potential at two properties just outside the study area, the Viola Mine and the Elkhorn Group (fig. 1, no. 33). Local residents indicated there are several thousand tons of zinc-bearing resource; at the Viola line. A 23-ft (70-m) drill hole intercept near Heart Mountain et the Elkhorn Group adjacent to the stuny area contained 0.15 percent uranium oxide

"Enterprises are faced with increasing economic competition and managers are obliged to look for methods that will ensure a competitive edge in their companies’ markets. These methods include managerial concepts that employ common sense and are low cost. One of these approaches is the KAIZEN methodology, of Japanese origin; kaizen means continuous improvement (CI) when translated. A mining company, despite some of its idiosyncrasies, is just an enterprise where the application of KAIZEN can be advantageous. The company investigated, OKD, is the only domestic producer of hard coal in the Czech Republic and operates four mines that produce 11 Mt of coal annually. The OKD management team opted for KAIZEN as their principal method of continuous quality improvement. This paper suggests ideas for development and application of processes that provide for continuing improvement of production and management. The authors have taken the OKD Company to be their benchmark in the field of mining activities. The paper also focuses on possible difficulties accompanying the introduction of CI sustainable methods. Three years of application of CI methods has increased the income of the company by almost US$38.1 million, which provides a strong argument for continued application."

Faced with a severe disposal problem of their fines from a coal mine in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains of extreme eastern Kentucky, Eastern Coal Corporation has built a special plant to pelletize the fines into high quality coal pellets meeting the requirements of the metallurgical market. These low-ash, low-sulfur pellets measuring 3/4 x 3/8 in. contain less than 1.5% moisture and have the same stability as raw coal of the same size. Although Eastern Coal is mining 6000 tpd, the company had, until recently, no provision to recover the fine coal which was included with the plant effluent pumped to a 12-acre refuse pond. The pond, impounded behind the coarse refuse dump, rose 15 ft last year and obviously no pond can stand many years at this rate. Limited pond space in this rugged area of steep hills and narrow valleys dictated a revised disposal method.

Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation is a zinc-lead mine located in southern of Namibia. It is currently considering the development of a low grade ore body containing about 2.8% zinc. This ore can be utilised by the concentrator if it could be upgraded prior to the ball mill. Preliminary work indicated that the ore may be upgraded in a pre-beneficiating stage by using dense medium separation, X-ray sorting or a combination thereof to a feed grade of minimum 9% zinc. This paper describes the process followed in evaluating the technologies for pre-beneficiation. The results from test work indicated that the low grade ore is amenable to pre-beneficiation by both dense medium separation and X-ray sorting. A comparison between the two technologies showed that dense medium separation marginally outperformed X-ray sorting on grade and recovery. The results for the X-ray sorting were achieved by tuning the calibration curve specifically for the samples tested.

The opencut coal mine is located about 50 km west of Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland in Australia and produces about 140 000 tonnes per annum of high grade steaming coal utilising a small team (ten) of personnel to mine remnants of the Aberdare and Bluff seams left by previous underground mining. This, in itself, is not remarkable except that one of the seams has commenced spontaneously cornbusting resulting in temperatures in excess of 55’C commonly being encountered with portions of the p’it being wreathed in steam. To extend mine life, the mine required a blasting system that would: . Safely blast in temperatures below 100°C . Significantly reduce overall unit costs . Not increase the current vibration impacts on nearby housing . Not increase flyrock.

Reduce the respirable dust exposure of the roof-bolter operator when downwind of the continuous miner, particularly in mines where respirable dust standards are more stringent because of silica in the respirable dust. Dust Sources If roof-bolter dust levels are excessive, the bolter dust collector should first be checked to ensure that it is operating properly. (Technology News No. 219 provides information on how to spot and repair bolter dust collector problems). If the roof-bolter dust collector is operating properly and dust levels are still excessive, then the source is most likely a continuous mining machine operating upwind. In many sections, the roof-bolter operator must work on the return side of the continuous miner during part of the production cycle. The City of Toronto and the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) have conducted an Individual Environmental Assessment (EA) for a 6.2 km, 4-station underground extension of the Spadina Subway from Downsview Station to Steeles Avenue. This Environmental Assessment Study was performed in three phases including routes and general station locations, alignments and station concepts and detailed assessment of the effects of the undertaking. URS Canada Inc. has led the consultant team for this Study. The anticipated total duration of the project is approximately 6 years and its estimated total cost is about $1.4 billion. This paper presents the planning process of the project, the environmental and engineering challenges, and the measures taken to address them.

Early in 1940 the development and sampling programmes in hand on the North and British Sections of North Broken Hill Limited were such as to necessitate the drilling of a large number of drill holes ranging up to about thirty feet in length. On the British Section, one purpose was to test the existence, width, and value of narrow lodes believed, for geological reasons, to occur in the walls of the existing workings. Another object was to definitely disprove the existence of payable shoots of ore in certain largerhodonite and quartz-garnet ("garnet sandstone") pillars which had been formerly left as unpayable.On the North Section, the main purpose of the short holes was to delineate the ore-body boundaries by drilling laterally from drives in ore, and thus enable level layout to be planned in advance of sill stoping. It was also desired to test the walls of stopes in those portions of the mine where the economic limit of mining is not rendered obvious by a clear-cut wall, but should be determined by assay. In these latter cases it was hoped to eliminate "prospecting by stoping," a procedure by which any doubts as to the existence of further good ore behind the low-grade walls were settled by continuing to stope laterally until all chance of such an occurrence was removed.LONG HOLE ROCK DRILLINGFollowing an investigation of recorded instances of similar practice elsewhere it was decided to use the rock drill for a series of trial sample holes. A 3-in. drifter was used. This was selected from those in use underground, and was given a special overhaul; had a new machine been purchased, a 4-in. type would probably have been obtained as being more suited to the work. The rods were H in. hollow round steel with a type "1" Jackrod thread. Couplings were of chrome steel, and were H in. in diameter, and 2 in. long. Jackbits (type "1" thread) in sizes from 2 in. to 4 in., with 1-in. gauge changes, gave a range of nine bit sizes. They were resharpened by hot milling, and were not milled to a definite gauge size.After sharpening, bits were sent underground without sorting into sizes, the drillers selecting the next bit with callipers. In view of the small scale of operations, it was not considered worth while to adopt special measures, such as the cold grinding of bits, which might have given a better product. Later, however, new bits were used exclusively, the idea being to accumulate enough blunt Jackbits to warrant a thorough treatment of the sharpening...

In general, overall experience has shown that the approach to the appointment of a project manager is given much attention, but little specific attention is given first to the risk associated with the project conceptual design and its overall executability within either the new legislative framework or the sustainability of the outcome. The risk in project executability and sustainability within the ?new age? legislative framework of the Mining Charter, etc, is itself however, of far greater importance. The degree of importance being defined by the intended projects impact on the business going forward. This is particularly the case where the intention of the implementation is effectively to turn around or even enhance a loss-making strategic investment like a mine or process plant operation in an ?old-order rights? or Brownfield?s operation. This paper attempts to highlight the importance of a ?pre-project project? (PPP) to mitigate the risk in the ?new age?, with specific reference to operational due diligence (ODD) and project conceptual design.

The Greater Vancouver Water District is currently constructing the Seymour-Capilano Water Filtration Project to enhance the quality of drinking water in the Vancouver metropolitan area. The Seymour-Capilano Water Filtration Project comprises the 1,800 million litres per day Seymour-Capilano Filtration Plant, the 1,080million litres per day Capilano Pumping Station, twin tunnels with associated shafts, and the Capilano Energy Recovery Facility. The twin tunnels will convey raw water under pressure from the Capilano Reservoir to the Seymour Filtration Plant and return treated (filtered) water for distribution. The Twin Tunnels component of the project comprises twin, 3.7 m diameter, 7.2 km TBM bored tunnels, the 180 m deep Seymour Shaft as the main launch shaft, and two 4 m diameter, 268 m deep raise bore exit shafts at Capilano. The Twin Tunnels have been planned as predominantly unlined tunnels sited at depth entirely within granitic bedrock and cross under two major buried glacial valleys of breadths in excess of 1500 metres that are filled with glacial sediments to depths up to 200 metres. The maximum overburden along the tunnel alignment is approximately 400 metres. Comprehensive site investigations and studies were completed during the detailed design stage of the project. The construction of the twin tunnels started in the fall of 2004 and is planned to be completed by mid-2008.

In the Santa Eulalia mining district, Chihuahua, Mexico, the main mineral zone occurs in a gently warped dome with simple associated structures and contains orebodies distributed through a vertical range of over 900 m. The stratigraphy of 1945 m of geologic column is described and an abrupt shrinkage is documented in the volume of limestones immediately associated with large orebodies. Termed collapse, this shrinkage occurred during the course of mineralization. Contacts of limestone with igneous sills, and 366 m of fossiliferous limestone beds, particularly the main fossil bed, have been important localizers of ore-bodies. Up-dip gravitational controls may have been important. Fractures have exerted only local controls and over short distances. Thrust zones have displaced diabase sills and in turn have been intruded by upper members of a group of rhyolite porphyry sills. Mineralizers were related to the rhyolite porphyry, and ore has been introduced to the limestone where certain sills lie between the displaced segments of diabase and have been cut by north-south fissures. Speculations are raised that fields of unreleased strain may have influenced orebody locations; the district's zoning pattern may be a reflection of the filtering effects of large volumes of limestone; and that metal-rich brines mobilized by or incorporated within the invading porphyry might be the source of the mineralizers. PRODUCTION AND LOCATION The Santa Eulalia district has a production record approaching or exceeding 35 million tons of silver-lead-zinc ore from replacement bodies in limestone. In operation since the first years of the 17001s, production has been confined to two intensely mineralized areas separated by 2 km of barren limestone, the West Camp and the East Camp. Probably 50% has been mined since 1908, with over 90% from the West Camp. The West Camp, exploited through a vertical depth of 1945 m and now approaching exhaustion, is the subject of this paper. The district lies in the northern part of the Santa Eulalia Mountains in central Chihuahua in northern Mexico, 400 km south of El Paso, Texas, and 22 km southeast of Chihuahua City. Dominating the northern part of the range is the Cerro de Santa Eulalia, a broad rolling upland which contains the district's West and East Camps. The West Camp, on the west side of the range, centers around the village of Santo Domingo, which is 2 km northeast of the Real de Santa Eulalia (Fig. 1). REGIONAL GEOLOGY Thick-bedded middle Cretaceous limestones, probably Aurora, form the great bulk of the Cerro de Santa Eulalia. It is hypothesized that the standard approach adopted to characterize the ground and to determine the rock strength properties at depth are flawed and generally tend to underestimate the rock strength and possibly the stiffness, particularly when the rock mass is characterized as massive to moderately jointed or blocky to very blocky. It is therefore necessary to conclusively established that the hypothesis, that the rock strength in highly confined rocks is greater than generally anticipated, is actually valid and generally applicable, and then to develop new procedures to establish rock parameters that can be reliably used for the design of deep excavation.

The separation of certain minerals by electrostatic techniques can be difficult due to their similar electrical conductivity, and any technique to improve this can be useful in certain difficult separation applications. Triboelectric differences between mineral scan result in certain minerals acquiring small positive or negative charges prior to inductive electrostatic separation. By changing the polarity of inductive separation, relative changes in mineral recovery can be observed, which may be beneficial. In this brief study a JKTech mineral liberation analyser (MLA) was used to evaluate the effect of polarity change on selected minerals present in the Richards Bay Minerals deposit, and an approximate triboelectric series based on this behaviour is presented.

The proposed Caldecott fourth bore will consist of a two lane highway tunnel along California State Route 24 near the City of Oakland. The proposed design and construction sequence for the 15-m-diameter tunnel are based on the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). The initial support system incorporates combinations of shotcrete, rock dowels, lattice girders, spiles, and grouted steel pipe canopies. The final lining is cast-in-place reinforced concrete. A waterproofing membrane and drainage system are placed between the initial and final linings. State Route 24 is a lifeline route, required to be open to emergency vehicles within 72 hours after a major earthquake, defined as having a return period of 1,500 years and a peak ground acceleration of 1.2 g. Although the seismic design criteria are stringent, the design of the tunnel lining system is ultimately controlled by static ground loads in the weak rock along the alignment.

The shortage of sulfur is not only continuing but appears to be worsening, attended by steadily rising prices. At the same time emphasis on air-pollution abatement is also increasing. These two factors, a rising market and the growth of environmental attention, have encouraged producers to carefully review all possible sulfur sources. As a result, production of sulfur from hydrogen sulfide occurring in petroleum is receiving greater attention than ever before. Until about a decade ago, the practice of recovering sulfur from hydrogen sulfide separated from gases (either found naturally or generated in desulfurization of liquid petroleum) was wide1y recognized but contributed little to total free-world sulfur production. However, during the past ten years, the production of sulfur from this source has increased so rapidly that it now accounts for a substantial portion of total production. This trend shows no signs of slackening, and current forecasts predict that recovered sulfur may become the dominant source of supply within ten years, exceeding mined sulfur production. This paper is intended to list sulfur sources and relationships, and to discuss the potential of producing sulfur from petroleum. The processing involved, in addition to product storage and transportation will also be discussed along with important economic aspects of sulfur recovered from hydrogen sulfide. For many years, most of the world's elemental sulfur has been produced from salt domes, predominantly by the Frasch process. During the past decade, however, another production source has developed so quickly that it is expected to surpass the Frasch production sources within a short time. This new source lies in the petroleum gases and liquids from which dramatically increasing quantities of elemental sulfur are being recovered. In the phraseology of the trade, the sulfur so obtained is know as "recovered sulfur," a term which does not, as one might expect, include sulfur recovered from other sources such as smelter gases. The growth rate of recovered sulfur compared to that of Frasch sulfur, total elemental sulfur, and total Free World sulfur in all forms is shown in Fig. 1 Since 1963, sulfur consumption has exceeded production,with the natural result that the price of sulfurhas continually increased. The posted price reported for f.o.b. Port Sulphur, La., has risen from as low as $18 per ton in 1962 to $32.50 per ton in mid-1967. With freight and other charges, delivered prices have of course run much higher, amounting to $45 or $46 per ton on the east and west coasts. In some cases, spot sales for as much as $60 have been reported. Although it is playing an ever-increasing role in the sulfur market, recovered sulfur was originally a by-product of the removal of hydrogen sulfide from natural and petroleum refinery gases. Today, however, it is often the most valuable product of a multi-product processing facility. Since there are two major sources of recovered sulfur—production and refining processes —natural gas is included with liquid petroleum for purposes of this discussion. Sulfur from these sources is produced in the form of gaseous hydrogen sulfide which is removed from a gas stream and converted to elemental sulfur. Gases in which hydrogen sulfide occurs naturally are natural gas and the gas produced from a high=pres-sure crude=oil or condensate field.
