Large metallurgical complexes have more data than a small city and these data change as internal and external conditions evolve. Staffing turnover hinders experienced-based decisions especially with simple tools like spreadsheets. Lack of current information can contribute to decisions that result in significant deterioration in the quality of operation. Timely, unified information from sophisticated analyses presented to the broadest possible reach will improve operation. The major innovation is the addition of the web browser to the suite of software people will use with no training – the other two are spreadsheets and graphical presentations – and the consistent organization and transformation of the real time data to support broad access. This paper describes the data transformations and presentation methods necessary for a Web view, especially the special needs of real time data and analysis required for active operations decision-making. Many people inside and outside the complex, not just operators, need timely information that is abstracted, aggregated, organized and unified. Unification and aggregation of real time data presented via the Web opens a new paradigm for collaboration. The analysis tools are as important as the data. These rule-based tools add significantly to the operations database in the form of results stored for viewing with plant data. Mining and metallurgical plants already use many sophisticated analysis tools such as predictive maintenance policies based on statistical analysis vibration analysis, and oil and lube analysis for critical equipment. These add real time events, similar to an alarm package, and unified production information to the operational database. Simple models are used on line to create key indices that provide a real time indication of performance. Key indices include metrics for losses due to plant availability, performance efficiency, and overall process equipment effectiveness. These additional data in the operations database are used for early fault detection, increased production, better quality, higher availability of equipment and faster detection of process bottlenecks. An important feature is the ability for people to create their own key indices and store the results for use by anyone in the plant historian, but accessible by a browser. This paper reports on recent field observations on the performance of support systems under different corrosion environments in Canadian underground mines. Phenomenological data are used to gain a better understanding of the main causes of corrosion in underground metal mines. Preliminary field data collected from five metal mines have been complemented by atmospheric and water sample analysis as well as fractography and metallographic studies. This has identified dominant factors that control the corrosion of support systems. The data are analysed in order to develop a support strategy for mines operating in corrosion environments.

Traditional cycle theory would postulate that if you have a supply shortage relative to demand, the price will increase because buyers will incrementally increase the price they are willing to pay to ensure that their needs are fulfilled. As prices rise, more supply will be brought on and will eventually exceed demand. This supply excess will cause the price to decline as producers have to lower their prices to sell their goods. What is interesting is that cycles are simply volatility over time. Without the time factor, volatility simply goes up and down. When we add the time element, a cycle is created. This cycle can be big or small. In mining?s case, we are talking about a Super Cycle ? a big cycle. But a Su-per Cycle can be formed in two ways. It can form by either increasing the wavelength or the volatility. If these two elements are combined, a Super Cycle is formed. It is bigger than the normal cycle in terms of time duration and extent of volatility. A recent study (Fig. 1) conducted by Cuddington and Jarrett showed an interesting proof of Super Cycles and suggests that these cycles last between 15 and 30 years. So, what causes a Su-per Cycle? Is it a convergence of unrelated events or a consequence of related events? In a global community everything is related. Equilibrium theory would also take the position that a Super Cycle is a consequence of events.

This study explores how different geometries affect the shock tunnel’s performance and is broken down into three phases. Phase 1: Open arena testing in which theoretical energies produced by the detonation of small (<1.0 kg) charges are compared to actual experimental values. Phase 2: Shock Tunnel testing in which realized energies are experimentally recorded for the UK and S&T shock tunnels. Phase 3: Analysis of the data to begin building a pressure-forecasting tool for the UK shock tunnel given the explosive characteristics, sample size and desired pressure and impulse.

This paper presents an overview of work carried out by the CSIR Division of Mining Technology and formerly by the Chamber of Mines Research Organization (COMRO) to quantify the behaviour of the stope fracture zone near deep level goldmine stopes. The motivation for this work is first reviewed in the context of the unsatisfactory status of current mine layout design criteria. Numerical methods to represent failure processes are reviewed briefly. Specific studies of microfracture processes are described as well as physical modelling experiments that can yield insights into deformation mechanisms. Modelling of stope scale deformation mechanisms are presented and considerations relating to elastodynamic modelling of the rock mass are described. The implications of this understanding in relation to prospects for active fracture zone ?engineering? are outlined and finally, the directions of future research work are proposed.

Ernest Henry Mine (EHM), located in north-western Queensland, is an underground copper/gold sublevel caving operation currently producing over 6 Mt/a of ore. The mass mining method of sublevel caving (SLC) used at EHM involves systematically blasting a series of uphole rings in parallel ore drives and drawing the broken ore using a top-down approach. Each ore drive contains multiple precharged rings to prevent having to charge in close proximity to the brow of the previously fired ring; however, the current initiation system still involves ‘hooking up’ all detonator lead cords of the first precharged ring. The unstable nature of a rill and working close to a brow presents hazards to personnel completing the hook-up process. There is also a business risk of ore loss when damaged ground support completely prevents access to the next precharged ring. If the hook-up step could be eliminated, the risk to personnel and the business would be significantly reduced.EHM engaged Orica Mining Services in 2016 to trial their WebGenTM 100 – wireless electronic blasting system (WEBSTM) for the first time in an underground mining environment. Having successfully signal-tested the equipment, two test holes were initiated, followed by a single production ring and then multiple production rings. In total, 30 production rings were successfully fired underground at EHM in 2017. To do this, WEBSTM was successfully integrated into EHM’s current charging and firing process, resulting in no business delays or loss to production. None of the 30 rings required hooking up and all were initiated from the surface with no personnel underground. A high level of ownership from all personnel involved ensured the trial was a success, and provided scope for wireless detonators to be used successfully on a large scale – both at EHM and other sublevel caving operations. With increasing demand for real-time monitoring of mine parameters, the requirement for appropriate data management in many mining applications is also increasing. This includes atmospheric monitoring in underground coal and metal mines. Although a number of different (real-time) monitoring systems have been installed in underground mines, they all typically share the same systems or sub-systems, where each sub-system may include both custom hardware and / or software components. In addition, monitoring components installed in underground coal mines in the USA should also be intrinsically safe and approved by the US Mine Safety and Health Administration. Real-time analysis adds complexity to the system since data validation and storage should be completed independently of filtering, data reduction operations, or visualization. Real-time processing may include statistical evaluation, trending, cross-correlation, and real-time alarm or warning generation. This paper presents the concept and design of an integrated system under development for atmospheric monitoring in US coal mines.

METALLURGICAL ACTIVITY in 1963 was again dominated by the insatiate demands of research and development conducted in conjunction with the nation&apos;s defense and aerospace programs. An increasing effort was noticeable throughout the year, however, to apply to the commercial field many of the processes and techniques that have been developed by government-sponsored research. Particularly effective has been the Industrial Applications Program of the National Aeronautic and Space Agency through which many of the technological advancements made during the course of NASA research and development have been published and released to the public. POWDER TECHNOLOGY Powder metallurgy techniques for fabricating metals, not long ago declared outmoded because of improved casting and shaping methods, have since made an astonishing comeback. Traditionally mechanical pressing of powder shapes has been employed when melting and casting was difficult or impossible, when phase relationships needed to be sidestepped, or when machining costs could be avoided. Hence, it has long been used for producing relatively small special shapes of high-melting metals and alloys. Small iron parts produced with a punch and die have been common for many years, but powder metallurgy techniques are now applicable to a wide range of materials and items. Hard-to-handle materials including refractory metals and their alloys are now rolled, forged, or extruded from billets made by sintering isostatically compacted powders. The major element of the powder metallurgy industry still comprises iron shapes, however, and two-thirds of the annual 100,000 tons of powder metallurgy products are made of iron. The largest single user of powder-forming techniques is the automobile industry which currently consumes 14,000 to 16,000 tons of iron powder per year. A typical 1963 model auto contained more than 100 pressed powder parts (e.g., transmission gears, timing gears, sprockets, ball joint suspensions) totaling 5 to 7 pounds per car. The Kemess Mine tailings impoundment is retained behind an earthfill and rockfill dam that, when complete, will measure about 140 m in height with a crest length in excess of 1 km. Due to weak foundation conditions, the dam must be raised at a very flat downstream slope approaching 7H:1V. This requires an enormous volume of fill to construct the downstream shell of the dam, which has a low permeability clayey till core and is raised via the centerline construction method. For the initial years of annual dam raising, from 1996 through 2002, the downstream shell of the dam was constructed with non acid generating waste rock from the open pit, 7 km distant and requiring an uphill haul with obvious cost implications. To reduce costs, and to reduce waste haulage constraints on mining schedules, feasibility studies were initiated for raising of the downstream shell using cycloned tailings sand as opposed to open pit waste. This required inclusion of flotation cells for removal of residual sulphides from the tailings to produce the non acid generating product mandated for the downstream shell of the dam. These studies were positive, and cycloned sand construction was initiated in December of 2002. This paper describes the experience gained with cycloned sand construction for the dam. Unique aspects include environmental controls given the sulphide-bearing ores, preparation of the existing shell of the dam for subsequent placement of hydraulically placed cycloned tailings sand, on-dam settling ponds, water management issues, reclamation of the sand dam for erosion control commensurate with the wet climate, and use of the system to construct an above-water beach of non acid generating tailings to increase the closure security of the structure. A particularly unique aspect of the Kemess experience is hydraulic fill operations extending throughout the coldest winter months, as compared to other operations where such placement has traditionally been considered non-viable through the winter months

The problem of estimating the precision of systematic samples from a mineral deposit is attacked by interpolating the quality, or other attribute measured, by using Fourier approximation. Such approximation using trigonometric functions yields a particularly simple expression for the variance of the mean value of the attribute sampled. The increasing volume of publication in which the science of statistics has been applied to the problem of predicting the quality of an ore deposit from sets of samples taken from it might lead one to believe that engineering judgment can be replaced by statistics. There is, in fact, an implicit application of the principle of indifference or of "no advance knowledge" which has been discredited in modern statistical theory and practice. These pages will show that it is not always advantageous, efficient, or safe to apply this principle. This problem will be dealt with by using series of orthonormal functions to describe the distribution of the quality of ore in space as contrasted with the more commonly used distribution of quality as a frequency function. Mining engineers are rarely well acquainted with the use of such series or of the functions comprising them. These uses are commonplace in the fields of communication and information theory and it is not surprising that applications taken from these fields should be found appropriate for the analysis of the information contained in a set of samples from an ore deposit. It is hoped that presentation of the following basic, but incomplete, results will generate wider interest in this method and a fuller development of it as well as of the necessary computational techniques. FUNDAMENTAL PREMISES Random variables in the strictest sense are not very common in mine sampling. The sets of samples are almost always taken systematically and are, hence, not subject to all the laws governing random events. Therefore, unless there is indeed random experimental error in the determinations of quality, the treatment of systematic samples of n members as though they were random samples of n members often leads to calculation of confidence limits for the mean quality which are larger than they should be with the result that unnecessary additional sampling is done. The reason for this will emerge in the following discussion leading to Eq. 24 and its generalization. In order to inquire into such questions on a rigorous basis and at the same time avoid arithmetic complications that would obscure the concepts involved, a one dimensional distribution of quality will be assumed. Laboratory strength and deformation testing of freshly blasted sandstone and claystone overburden from Jeebropilly colliery in Queensland and in-situ plate-bearing tests on four backfills of different ages showed that the bearing capacity of backfill is a function mainly of compaction, not of age. The modulus or stiffness of the backfill is significantly increased by previous loading, in some cases up to threefold. Backfill material experiences some compaction through the passage of mining vehicles, likely to provide a bearing capacity that will support normal construction activities; the limited testing performed suggested that completed backfills are capable of supporting loads of up to 200 kN/m2 while sustaining displacements acceptable for a wide range of residential and industrial uses, but may be susceptible to collapse settlements due to saturation in the long term

Surface coal mining in West Virginia has supplied energy to the eastern coast of the United States for over a century. The coal mining industry has been forced to adapt as societal demands regarding health, safety, and environmental impacts have changed with time. More recent pressure has called for another iteration of change: long-term post-mining sustainability. The research presented in this paper investigates one potential solution?or component of a solution?to improve mining sustainability in Appalachia: post-mining wind power. This paper intends to demonstrate and explain the feasibility of synergistic mine closure and wind development. Wind conditions at three reclaimed mine sites in West Virginia were monitored in order to develop representative case studies for post-mining wind power. This paper contains a summary of the literature consulted to plan the site assessments, the methodology employed to execute them, the analysis steps undertaken to derive conclusions, and a discussion of all findings. This research has found that significant cost savings can be yielded from synergistic mine closure and wind development, as compared to greenfield wind development. Though wind conditions themselves remain the primary driver for site feasibility, post-mining wind power is a practice with significant promise for improving project economics, contributing to renewable energy development, enhancing company-community relations, providing local employment opportunities, and exemplifying sustainable business practices in Appalachia.

Because of its small interburden thickness, concentrated stress distributions, high coal seam metamorphism, and complex geological conditions, mining the five coal seams (Nos. 5, 7, 8, 9 and 12) of Kaiping coalfield is difficult. Kaiping coalfield is located within 80 m in the Kailuan Group. The overburden caving caused by mining the five coals seams was measured using ZTR12 geological penetration radar (GPR) survey combined with borehole observations. The development characteristics of full-cover rock fractures after mining were obtained from the GPR scan, which provides a measurement basis for the control of rock strata in close multiple-seam coal mining. For the first time, it was found that the overburden caving pattern shows a periodic triangular caved characteristic. Furthermore, it is proposed that an upright triangular collapsed rock pile and an inverted triangular area with larger fragments piled up alternately appear in the lower gob. The research results show that the roof structure formed in the gob area can support the key overlying strata, which is beneficial to ensure the integrity and stability of the upper coal seams in multiple-seam mining of close-coal seams.

Paper presented at the conference Economic geology in Europe and beyond II, models for mineral deposits in sedimentary basins, held in Keyworth, UK, 13-14 April 1994. The modified basinal brines, containing partly oxidised sulphur species, scavenged metals from basement rocks and sediments and transported them through the host rock, which contained local concentrations of organic matter. Reacting in various ways with the mineralising solution as temperatures at the sites of mineralisation changed, organic matter caused the precipitation and dissolution of a variety of minerals in the ore zones; it was organic matter that caused all of these reactions to occur at the same sites. Thus all components of the mineralising fluid - salt, water, heat, sulphur and metals - were obtained within the ore district. The siting of the mineral districts was related to the locations of faults through U- and Th-enriched granites beneath sediments containing basinal brines, and the locations of ore deposits within the districts were controlled by local concentrations of organic matter

Modern, high-speed machines used in the manufacture of paper require foundations with stringent settlement constraints. To fulfill this requirement, caisson piles, extending into bedrock, were selected to support a paper machine in Baie Comeau for the Quebec North Shore Paper Company (QNSPCo.). This was the fourth machine in an existing paper mill, and its construction was part of an expansion program which included the building of associated structures such as a wood room and chip storage building, and other facilities, Figure 1. The paper mill in Baie Comeau, Quebec, is located in an area which has extensive deposits of sensitive marine clay which are transformed into a viscous liquid when disturbed by external forces such as the driving of piles. Loss of ground and soil disturbance as affected by piling activity assumed considerable importance in the design and construction of the caissons particularly in view of the proximity of existing plant facilities, including another paper machine.

Physical testing of rock support for rockbursting conditions has been carried out for over 40 years. A review of this testing shows that it has been mostly component?based, rather than actually testing support systems. Further, it is concluded that none of the testing is truly representative of rockburst loading in a similitude sense. Similitude conditions are not achievable, mainly because the real conditions in a rockburst event, such as seismic source location and magnitude, wave frequencies, amplitudes, and interactions, are not all known. Because such information is not available, and because the results of all testing carried out to date have not been able to define, for support design purposes, the capacity of support systems, ongoing physical testing of rockburst support systems is essential. It is essential that the test should simulate, or actually take place in, a supported rock excavation. A rock support system is a combination of individual support components that work together to retain and contain the rock. In doing this, the components are subjected to loading by the rock and to interactive loading between one component and another. It is necessary to prove the capacity of such rockburst support systems by subjecting them to severe loading, as in direct blasting. The direct blasting approach, pioneered more than 40 years ago, probably still provides the greatest validity as a significant test of rockburst support capabilities, even though it does not simulate a rockburst. Direct blast testing of rockburst support systems in a surface environment, such as in a quarry or on exposed rock cutting surfaces, could represent a practical development of the approach, facilitating the execution and monitoring of tests.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Baiyinnuo’er Zn-Pb deposit is a typical skarn deposit in NE China. Skarn and orebodies mainly occur between different units of the Lower Permian Huanggangliang Formation carbonates-sandstone-mudstone or within the contact between intrusions and marble. Skarn minerals are dominated by prograde garnet and clinopyroxene, and the main ore minerals are sphalerite and galena. We conducted single fluid inclusion compositional studies using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry on clinopyroxene (pre-ore-stage mineral) and sphalerite and calcite (syn-ore-stage minerals). The results show that the Baiyinnuo’er fluids are distinctly different from basinal brine but similar to magmatic fluid, thereby indicating that the deposit has a dominantly magmatic origin. This interpretation has also been supported by the Cl/Br mole ratios, which remain stable (~500) in different fluid stages. The decreases for most of the elements in the fluid inclusions from pre-ore-stage clinopyroxene to syn-ore-stage sphalerite and calcite suggest that mixing with groundwater has occurred during mineralisation, with significant Zn, Pb and Ag deposition.CITATION:Shu, Q, Hammerli, J, Chang, Z, Lai, Y and Huizenga, J-M, 2015.
