Conventional concrete block plastered with a cementitious coating is the most common material used in the construction of permanent stoppings to direct airflow in underground mines in the US. All mines experience various degrees of strata convergence depending on depth of overburden, geological conditions, and type of roof support employed. Strata convergence will cause cracks and joint openings in masonry stoppings, resulting insignificant air leakage losses. Where strata convergence is severe, complete structural failure of the stopping can ultimately occur. Reconstruction of damaged or destroyed stoppings adds expensive overhead to mining operations, and even greater expenses are incurred from the additional fan horsepower required to overcome leakage losses. Ideally, a stopping should maintain high resistance to airflow while yielding to strata convergence. By properly incorporating a polyisocyanurate rigid foam material within the masonry block structure, stopping service life can be increased in mines experiencing strata convergence problems such as floor heave, roof loading, and lateral rib movement.

Composite ores are more often used for production of iron in connection with reserve depletion of traditional ore crude in the regions with developed metallurgy. In particular, the majority of perspective ferrum-ore deposits of the Urals are presented by titanferous magnetite ores which contain a significant amount of titanium and vanadium alongside with ferrum. Thus, the deposits of titanferous magnetites of the Southern Urals on the average contain about 20 % of Fe, 8,7 % TiO2 and 0,24 % V2O5. Due to a high content of titanium oxides it is impossible or it is inexpedient to process such ores in blast furnaces. During work just on titanferous magnetite ore refractory titanium-containing slags are formed in a blast furnace, and in case of its dilution by ores of different types the titanium due to the small content in slag is thrown out. It is often impossible to separate such ores into ferriferous and titanferous concentrates because ferrum and titanium are present in the same minerals. This work attempts to selectively reduce ferrum in solid oxide and to separate metallic iron from titanferousslag with fast fusion. Solid-phase reduction of ferrum has been carried out with carbon at temperature of 1000? 1300°?. In products of solid-phase reduction the extremely disperse mix of metal iron and only partially reduced titanium oxides have been achieved. It is impossible to separate such a mix mechanically. However, the fast fusion of the mix allowed separating it into cast iron and slag with the high content of titanium. Thus the cast iron contained less than 0,1 % of titanium, and the slag did not contain practically any ferrum.

Over half of the molten aluminium produced at the 52,000 tons/ year eapacity plant operated by Comalco Aluminium (Bell Bay) Limited in Tasmania is cast into saleable produets by the direct chill process. Considering the importance of direct chill casting to the aluminium industry it is surprising that so little published literature on the subject is available, although Easton (1947), Smart (1954), and Uppert (1940, 1944, 1945) have contributed much toward lifting the veil of secrecy surrounding the process.The direct chill, or D.C. process as it is commonly called when related to aluminium, consists basically of feeding molten aluminium or its alloys into; water-cooled mould from the bottom of which solid aluminium is continuously extracted. Although the casting procedure is continuous in principle, the equipment is normally operated in an intermittent manner. Castings up to 20 ft long are formed during a cycle. At the end of the cycle casting is stopped and the pit into which thc castings are dropped is cleared before a new cycle commences. Depending on the size of the casting in relation to the cross sectional area of the pit and the support mechanism (commonly a hydraulic ram), 'drops' of up to 15 tons are not uncommon. This method of D.C. casting IS termed vertical D.C. casting and is the one most commonly employed in the aluminium industry.Horizontal casting has come more to the fore in recent years with the casting being extracted from the mould in the horizontal plane and is a truly continuous casting method since flying saws can be simply used to cut the continuously cast shape into required lengths as it emerges from the mould...

The Peelwood district of New South Wales is located some 65 miles south of Bathutst on the Tuena-Crookwell road. A number of occurrences of lead-zinc-copper ore are known from this district but only three mines, Peelwood, Cordillera and Mt. Costigan, have achieved any significant production. The purpose of the paper is to describe the mineral composition of sulphide ores from these three localities.HISTORYNo published information on the geology of the Peelwood area is available. Came (1899) reports that, at the time of cessation of mining operations in 1888, the Peelwood mine had produced some 600 tons of copper metal and regulus, the Cordillera mine had yielded 9000 tons of ore at the recoverable grade of 2·5 per cent Pb, 2·5 per cent Cu, 90z/ton Ag and 1 dwtjto:p. Au, but that no production figures were available from Mt. Costigan. No further work was carried out on these properties until 1951 when the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia instigated a programme of geological mapping and exploratory diamond drilling (Whitten, unpublished data, 1953). Standard erosion plots (4.6 m by 22.1 m on 9 percent slope) were constructed on the Alston Surface Mine of Peabody Coal Company in Western Kentucky to evaluate the effects of placement technique and density on the erodibility and eroded size distribution from mine spoil and reconstructed topsoil. PLots were constructed with a dozer and scraper pan from shale spoil material, topsoil (A horizon) and subsoil (B and C horizon mixture) using soils stockpiled at the Alston Surface Mine. Plots were evaluated under fallow conditions with a tilled plot surface and two compacted conditions. One compacted condition was generated by tracking the surface with a dozer and rolling with a loaded scraper pan. The second was generated by rolling the surface with a solid wheel compactor. Rainfall was supplied with the Kentucky Rainfall Simulator at a rate of 63.5 mm h-l with the plots in three different soil moisture conditions; dry, field capacity, and very wet. Runoff was evaluated for flow rates, sediment concentrations, and aggregate and primary particle size distributions. Sediment yields and the Universal Soil Loss Equation E130 indexes were calculated from the data for each plot. The erodibility was calculated from the tilled plot data using a weighted soil loss and E130 value from the dry, field capacity and wet runs, and a cover management factor calculated for every other condition. For the topsoil and subsoil plots, sediment yield was greatest for the dozer scraper pan plots and lowest for the tilled plots. For the shale plots, erosion rates from the wheeled compacter plots were the highest and tilled plots the lowest. Average erodibilities were 0.14, 0.38, and 0.41 tons ac h ft-1 tonf-1 in-1 hundred ac-1 for the shale, subsoil, and top-soil plots. Cover management factors for each plot were 1.29, 1.42, and 1.17 for shale, topsoil and subsoil plots compacted with the solid wheeled compacter and 1.29, 3.79, and 2.51 for shale, subsoil, and topsoil plots compacted with the dozer scraper pan conbination. The accuracy of the Wischmeier erodibility nomograph was evaluated on the data collected. Erodibilities were accurately predicted for the topsoil plot and poorly predicted for the sub-soil plot. The accuracy of the CREAMS procedures for predicting the composition (size distribution) of eroded particles was also evaluated. The composition was well predicted for the topsoil plots, moderately well predicted for the shale plots and poorly predicted for the subsoil plots.

The Greater Vancouver Regional District completed installation of a 2.5 Km long, 2400 mm diameter concrete sewer in Delta, British Columbia in 2000. The sewer traverses through area of peat and soft ground. The ground investigation along the sewer alignment consisted of cone penetration tests and auger drilling with standard penetration tests. The gravity sewer is supported on precast, pretensioned spun concrete piles imported from Malaysia which had never been used for a major project in North America. The capacities of the installed piles were tested using pile driving analyzer (PDA) and three static load tests. A total of 46 PDA tests were carried out during pile installation. The paper describes the pile vetting process the owner went through prior to accepting the piles for use in the project and performance of the piles. It compares the pile capacity estimated from the PDA tests with that estimated from soil mechanics methods using data from cone penetration tests and standard penetration tests. The ranges of estimated capacities calculated by different methods are discussed from design capacity selection considerations.

In view of their size and favorable characteristics, Shell's heavy-oil fields on the eastern coast of Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela — known as the "Bolivar Coast" — are obvious candidates for the application of thermal recovery methods. During the last decade various methods have been tested, such as steam drive,', steam soak and in-situ combustion.3 Steam soak was discovered as a promising production method rather accidentally in 1969, during early steam drive testing in the Mene Grande Tar Sands1 When steam erupted at the surface due to breakdown of the overburden, the injection wells were back-flowed to relieve the reservoir pressure. This resulted in high oil production rates, all the more impressive because the reservoir is unproducible by primary means. It was concluded that injection of limited amounts of steam might be a very effective method for stimulation of heavy-oil wells. To obtain information that would be more widely applicable, testing of the process was continued in the eastern part of the Tia Juana field (Fig. 1). Here even more favorable results were obtained than in Mene Grande. This created sufficient confidence to prompt a large-scale project, which was considered essential for an adequate evaluation of ultimate recovery, steam requirements, mechanical problems and economic prospects. To obtain an early answer on the ultimate recovery a fairly depleted area was selected in the western part of the same field ("A" in Fig. 1). The first steam was injected in March, 1964. This paper describes the performance until the end of 1966. The production mechanism and well inflow performance are discussed in some detail. In view of the favorable results obtained so far, steam soak operations have expanded considerably since the start of this project. Presently, five other projects are under way, of which two are about the same size as the one under discussion, with further extensions being programmed. Description of the Project Reservoir Data Shell's part of the Main Tia Juana reservoir has a proven area of 8,800 acres and an average net oil sand thickness of 130 ft. It contained an initial quantity of 2,750 million bbl of stock tank oil (STOIIP), with an API gravity ranging from 10 to 15 API and a viscosity of 100 to 10,000 cp (at 122F). As a geological unit it is known locally as the Lower Lagun-illas member of the Lagunillas formation, which is early Miocene in age. The sand bodies are believed to be distributary channel sands deposited in a lower coastal plain. Most of the channel sands have lateral and some vertical communication. The field was developed mainly in the period from 1936 to 1950. The ultimate primary recovery is estimated at 18.1 percent of STOIIP, of which 12.5 percent STOIIP had been produced by the end of 1963 from some 540 wells. When the Q-system was launched in 1974, the name referred to rock mass classification, with focus on tunnel and cavern support selection. Besides empirical design of support, the Q-value, or its normalized value Qc, has been found to correlate with seismic P-wave velocity, with deformation modulus, and with deformation. The Q-system provides temporary or permanent support for road, rail, and mine roadway tunnels and for caverns for various uses. It also gives relative cost and time for tunnel construction for a complete range of rock qualities. There are also indications that Q has captured important elements of the cohesive and frictional strength of rock masses, with Qc resembling the product of rock mass cohesion and rock mass friction coefficient.

Specialized marine blasting techniques were required to deepen and widen the access channel and turning basin of the Sudeste Port Terminal in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This terminal has been designed to handle the exports of iron ore and other bulk solid cargoes to international markets. The Sudeste Port Terminal is connected to the iron ore quadrangle in Minas Gerais State by a dedicated railway line, giving Brazil’s independent miners a seamless access to global markets. However, the Sudeste Port Project is located in a protected marine environment. Blasting in this area has required a comprehensive blast induced ground vibrations monitoring and analysis program to ensure the safety of the sensitive structures surrounding of the blast areas. Nevertheless, the risk of generating higher ground vibrations on nearby structures due to the combination of short distances, larger excavations layers and complex geology, increased the complexity of the blast due to the limitations imposed by the maximum instantaneous charge and a demanding project schedule. Site-specific test blast programs were planned and executed in order to obtain in-situ vibration data to establish the local attenuation law, and also to better understand the role of dominant frequencies before production blasting started. This paper summarizes the main findings and solutions applied during the marine blasting project in the Sudeste Port Project.

A possible process for extracting tellurium and antimony from a residue generated in alkaline sulfide leaching of telluriumbearing alkaline skimming slag was proposed. The central composite design was employed to define the optimal leaching conditions for tellurium and antimony extractions from the residue sample. Using a 23 factorial matrix, the best performance for tellurium and antimony extractions (96.36% and 99.64%) were obtained at 175 g L−1 Na2S concentration for 80 °C during 60 min. The notable degree for influencing tellurium and antimony extractions was leaching temperature, Na2S concentration, and leaching time. The analysis of variance results indicated that the regression model was significant and suitable to be used for the optimization of independent variables within the range. The model was validated under optimal operating conditions based on the experimental design results. Antimony and tellurium in the leach liquor were separated and recovered by H2O2 oxidation followed by Na2S-Na2SO3 reduction. 98.93% of antimony was precipitated selectively during H2O2 oxidation, while 95.06% of tellurium was precipitated during Na2S-Na2SO3 reduction. NaSb(OH)6 and elemental tellurium was obtained as the product.

A substantial proportion of current and historic West Coast gold production comes from deposits situated around the margins of æice ageÆ glaciers. Gold has been eroded and transported by glacial ice then deposited in till and outwash gravel. The interplay between fluvial and glacial processes, climate, basement geology, tectonic uplift, sediment supply and sea level dictates many aspects of the development of the West Coast landscape. The way in which the external forcing factors interact is crucial in determining the gold content of placer deposits in this region. The following is an outline of some of the factors that influence the gold distribution in vicinity of glacial margins.

Safety is fostered by this company in consideration of both the humanitarian and economic aspects; the officials, take pride in promoting the welfare of employees, and the management has found that the safest way is the most eco¬nomical and that unless an organization is operated economically it can not continue to exist successfully. In planning and operating any safety, organization, terry things must be taken into consideration because an Enterprise can not be operated solely for safety any more than it can for any other single part of the operations. All work must be planned and executed for the common interest.

Electric arc furnace (EAF) dust from the steel industries is listed by the United Sates EPA as a hazardous waste under the regulations of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act due to the presence of lead, cadmium and chromium. The disposal of the approximately 650,000 tons of EAF dust per year in the U.S. and Canada is an expensive and unresolved problem for the majority of steel companies. The Waelz process has been considered as the best process for treating EAF dust. A process model, combined thermodynamic modeling with heat transfer calculations, has been developed to simulate the chemical reactions, mass and heat transfer and heat balance in the kiln. The injection of air into the slag and the temperature profile along the kiln has been modeled. The effect of (CaO+MgO)/SiO2 on the solidus temperature of slag has been modeled also and discussed. Some optimizing results have been presented in this paper.

"In mining operations, it is widely accepted that strategies to drive operational goals must revolve around improving plant availability, reliability and process efficiency. In this paper, an integrated solution framework for reducing process variability, increasing process efficiencies and maximizing plant availability and reliability is discussed within the context of a typical milling circuit. The framework exploits a real-time analysis “gap” evident in production operations that prevents timeous identification of equipment and process failures. This is achieved by leveraging predictive analytics for equipment health monitoring, control loop monitoring and advanced regulatory control solutions towards enhanced process performance, improved asset management and regulatory compliance. The framework provides for early and actionable warnings on equipment and process degradation using real-time operational data.INTRODUCTION The changing landscape of gold mining and processing presents many challenges that threaten sustainability of existing (marginal) operations as well as deter investment in new projects. As existing “shallow” ore resources become depleted, mining operations are increasingly treating low-grade ores with complex and randomly variable mineralogical characteristics. For example, in South Africa, historically one of the major gold producers, the average grade of ore treated has been decreasing from averages above 4.5 – 5 g/t to current grades averaging less than 3 g/t within a decade (Chamber of Mines, 2012). Moreover, lower tonnages are being treated as a result of the narrowing of the available resource base. Also, the regulatory framework has tightened over the years due to heightened concerns on the safety, health and environmental impacts of mining and related activities."

A precious metals refinery’s switch to personal computer-based, three-dimensional piping design saved many hours in the design of a South African precious metals refinery. Bateman Minerals and Industrial provided engineering, procurement and construction management services for Impala Platinum Limited-Refineries’ new $60 million refinery in Springs, South Africa. This project is one of the largest platinum refineries in the world. Bateman evaluated a new design method during this project that involved developing a three-dimensional model for the project. The new method saved time by reducing the man-hours required to generate complete project documentation, including plans, sections, isometrics and material takeoffs. The new method also saved design and construction time by allowing designers to detect clashes before construction began.

INTRODUCTION DURING the summer of 1919, the late Dr. Henry M. Howe, then Chairman of the Division of Engineering of the National Research Council, organized a committee to obtain a better insight into the behavior of carbon steels under the influence of various treatments by a proper control of the time and temperature factors. During part of 1919 and 1920, work in connection with this investigation was carried on at Dr: Howe's laboratory at Bedford Hills, N. Y. During 1921 there was an enforced hiatus in the work, occasioned by the illness which resulted in Dr. Howe's death in 1922. At that time one of the present authors compiled the results of the work which had been done and this was published in 1923.1 Following the publication of this work, it seemed desirable to carry on in the same manner an investigation of steel of C 0.75 per cent., which steel had not been as fully treated as had the other steels of C 0.34 and 0.52 per cent., used in the published work. Furthermore, certain unusual results have been obtained in the treatment of C 0.52 per cent. steel by quenching and drawing, and repetition of this part of the work seemed advisable. This has been done during the past year at the School of Mines and Metallurgy of the University of Missouri at Rolla, Mo., by a cooperative undertaking of the School and the Bureau of Mines, working in conjunction with the Committee on Heat Treatment of Carbon Steels of the National Research Council. The present paper is a report of the results obtained in this work.

Real copper prices during the past several decades display two striking characteristics. First, they are highly volatile. Within a year or two, copper prices can rise or fall by 30% or more. Second, over the longer term, they are falling. Indeed, since 1970, the secular trend price for copper is down by more than 50%. Figure 1 highlights both of these characteristics. It shows the average annual US producer price for copper since 1970 measured in constant 2001 US dollars. While the London Metal Exchange (LME) copper price is not shown, it and the US producer price have for some time moved more or less together. So pronounced short-run fluctuations around a significant long-run decline describe copper prices, not only in the United States, but around the world.

Syria has about 500 million ton deposit of minerals having 34 per cent iron content with alumina and silica as major impurities. Efforts were made to see the feasibility of concentration by four different methods involving washing, high intensity magnetic separation, reduction roasting and magnetic separation and acid leaching technique. It was observed that the reduction roasting with magnetic separation yields a concentrate with high iron (62.3 per cent) content without requiring water which is a scarce raw material in the region. The paper concludes that the detailed study may be made following this route to optimise the process Parameters.

The revised inspection standards or recommendations herein have been prepared for use in Federal inspection of bituminous-coal and lignite mines. They succeed a compilation of similar standards published as Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7268 in December 1943 and employed as a guide in Federal inspections since that time. Important alterations and additions have been made because of changes in mining, practice and temporary shortages of some safety equipment; moreover, several previous standards have been found not generally applicable and have accordingly been deleted. Mining methods and equipment continue to change, and new hazards and new safeguards are introduced. Consequently, these standards are subject to revision from time to time. Questions from the coal-mining industry regarding these standards and suggestions as to changes and additions thereto will be welcomed and considered carefully when the next revision is made. Many constructive criticisms from the mining industry have been considered in preparing this edition.

Tendon support systems have been successfully used to stabilize excavations. Tendon support systems are routinely designed using the axial load-bearing capacity of tendons, namely the tensile strength. To attain tensile strength the tendon must be loaded along its length, which often does not occur in practice. Tendons should optimally be installed at 90° to the surface of the excavation to achieve maximum penetration depth, yet this is often not physically or practically possible, and installations at angles less than 90° occur. Furthermore, the intersection of geological features within the rock mass frequently results in complex loading situations on tendons. The position and angle at which loading occurs results in different combinations of tensile and shear forces acting on the tendon, which can impact on the support performance of each unit and ultimately the whole system. All factors that influence the support system should be understood and taken into account to ensure a sound support design. Combination loading situations are further investigated and tested to obtain a better understanding of the mechanisms involved and the effects on tendon load-bearing capacity. Tendon support units were tested at different installation angles to establish the tendon performance, mechanical behaviour, and load capacity during these loading situations. The results and outcomes are aimed at providing rock engineers with additional data and improved understanding of how tendons could perform under certain conditions.
