In this paper, problems that have been experienced with the rockpass system at Kloof Mine No. 3 Shaft are described. Actions that have been taken to overcome the problems are also described. These include the use of slugshots to remove hang-ups, the abandonment and waste filling of passes, and design criteria adopted for an alternative pass system.

Characterization of ore and waste-rock material using automated quantitative micro-mineralogical techniques (e.g., QEMSCAN® and MLA) has the potential to complement traditional acid-base accounting and humidity cell techniques when predicting acid generation and metal release. These characterization techniques, which most commonly are used for metallurgical, mineral-processing, and geometallurgical applications, can be broadly applied throughout the mine-life cycle to include numerous environmental applications. Critical insights into mineral liberation, mineral associations, particle size, particle texture, and mineralogical residence phase(s) of environmentally important elements can be used to anticipate potential environmental challenges. Resources spent on initial characterization result in lower uncertainties of potential environmental impacts and possible cost savings associated with remediation and closure. Examples illustrate mineralogical and textural characterization of fluvial tailings material from the upper Arkansas River in Colorado.

Roof support systems are necessary to provide stable mine openings and much research has been conducted to design a variety of roof support systems that will function in various manners to ensure that stable ground conditions are achieved. Despite these advancements in technology, mistakes continue to be made in the evaluation and/or installation that significantly degrade the support capability or lead to erroneous determinations of support expectations. The purpose of this paper is to discuss misconceptions about how roof supports perform and factors that impact their performance. The goal is to present practical information that will assist mine operators and engineers in selecting, installing, and evaluating roof support systems properly, and help them to avoid mistakes that can lead to erroneous expectations and potentially catastrophic results that may lead to roof falls. The paper is limited to a discussion of secondary roof support systems and powered roof supports such as longwall shields.

"‘Gas hydrate’ is the common term for a solid material formed from the combination of various gases as ‘guest’ and water as ‘host’. A series of large-scale scientific drilling and coring programmes conducted since 2000 revealed that natural gas hydrate exists in a wide variety of accumulations in the sediments. The scaled-up onshore and offshore field production tests during the last decade show that gas production technology will be realized to make gas production from gas hydrates viable in the future, recognizing its potentials as one of the future sustainable energy resources.The total produced gas was approximately 470 m3 by the hot water circulation method over 6 days of operation in the permafrost-associated Mallik 2002 project in the Mackenzie Delta of Canada. In the Mallik 2007-2008 project, the gas was successfully produced stably by the depressurization method for 6 days, up to 13,000 m3 cumulatively. The depressurization method applied in the Mallik test was shown to be an effective way to produce gas from gas hydrates. The Alaska field trial to inject mixed gas of CO2 and N2 to exchange CH4 in 2012 was successfully done for the first time to produce maximum 1,270 m3 per day. A remarkable achievement was made by Japan when it completed its first offshore production test in the Eastern Nankai Trough, producing approximately 120,000 m3 of methane by the depressurization method over 6 days in March 2013. The technical challenges and scientific uncertainties obtained from Nankai Trough production test provide Korea with more considerations as to the aspects of well completion, reservoir formation and seafloor stability, sand control, flow assurance, environmental monitoring, and etc., due to the different geological setting and geomechanical properties of the Ulleung Basin in Korea."

Production, on the basis of preliminary data, was 964 kt (1.1 millon st) with an estimated value of $45.3 million. That was a 10- percent decrease in tonnage from 1.07 Mt (1.2 mil-lion st) with a value of $49.2 million that was produced in 2007. Tennessee was the leading producer state with 63 percent of domestic production, followed by Texas, Mississippi and Kentucky. About 73 percent of production was airfloat, 16 percent was crude and 11 percent was water-slurried.

Entre sus principales objetivos están: la determinación de los stándares de producción en tonelaje, leyes, costos y plazos, que hagan rentables los procesos de operación minera, la definición de sistemas standarizados que generen valor económico en cada uno de sus procesos. Asmismo, se realizó un diagnóstico previó que abarcó los procesos de geología, planeamiento, exploración, explotación, beneficio de minerales en planta concentradora, mantenimiento y proceso de comunicación gerencial. Los resultados y datos de este diagnóstico tiene como base la referencia para la evaluación y avance del proyecto.

The NaturFreizeitNiederrhein GmbH (NFN) is a private company with associates from administrative bodies, the local mining companies and multiple representatives of environmental protection groups (local and national), tourism organizations, cultural societies and also aquatic sport and fishing clubs. Center of the concept is the "NFN Lake District." The development concept aims to provide the agricultural industry with alternative means of income, while protecting wildlife and the ecological balance as well as preserving the social und cultural system and enhance the safety against flooding from the river Rhine. The mining industry contributes their coordination of obligation concerning reclamation and recultivation of the already existing individual projects. While designing the landscape components and establishing the infrastructure for the different tasks, the production of gravel and sand is yield as a by product. The result is a long term perspective for region and industry."

This report contains a description of the contract activities performed by ENSCO, Inc. under contract No. H0178069. The purpose of this project was to enhance the Bureau of Mine?s Cableless Electronic Survey System use to aid in the drilling of long (approx. 2000 feet) boreholes in coal. This drilling is performed as part of the methane drainage program. The system that was ultimately developed was field tested 2nd demonstrated in actual in-mine drilling activities. The significance of this system as compared to previous drill survey systems is the fact that it surveys without having to be inserted and removed for each survey point. It is so designed that it can withstand the shock and vibration experience by the drill string during drilling. This means an increased productivity is now possible in that drill operators can determine drill bit positioning in a near real-time environment.

The information age has definitely arrived and in fact has only begun to affect our business processes. Traditionally mining companies have been innovators and leaders with technology, but applying information technology systems to machines directly working on the mining extraction process poses challenges to those introducing the technology. Caterpillar is now presenting machine guidance and information systems for dozers, graders, blast hole drills, shovels, excavators, wheel loaders and trucks. These systems simply increase the flow of real information in real time and deliver it to the end users who can make informed decisions that effect real productivity gains and at the same time eliminate the role of the middle manager who used to monitor and control these activities. Technology also offers cultural changes that appear intangible, but offer significant gains to those that implement technology. Critics state that these intangible benefits are still available to traditional processes, however these intangible elements are never identified nor managed without the introduction of technology enhanced processes. The benefits of these technologies are real and dramatic, existing users offer impressive testimonials, but still the technology can be disproportionate in the time it takes to introduce to an operation. Caterpillar finds that senior to executive management needs to be a part of the technology introduction, to coordinate all departments and set technology strategies.

"INTRODUCTION This paper is the seventh of a series of yearly reviews started in 1921 and pre¬sents information gathered in a cooperative investigation undertaken by the United States Bureau of Mines and the University of Utah. It is the purpose of this report to make available flotation—reagent consumption data and other milling information in such a manner as to be of value to the milling industry and to the manufacturer of flotation reagents.These data have been compiled from a survey of about 300 concentration plants in the United States. Much additional information has been obtained from the various offices of the United States Bureau of Mines. Many of the plants covered in the survey made complete reports of their operations, but others were apparently unable to supply this information in sufficient detail to meet the requirements of this report. As a result, some sections of the report are more complete than others. In general, however, the mill reports were much more complete than in previous years, and for the first time it has been possible to calculate average mill recoveries in the treatment of certain classes of ores. As in the past, every effort has been made to conceal individual plant operations.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIt is realized that the publication of this information is possible only through the assistance of the mill operators, and the authors wish to express their appreciation of this cooperation. Land disturbed by alluvial gold mining should be restored to a capability or productivity as good as that which existed prior to disturbance.   Effective rehabilitation requires detailed planning prior to mining and must also be closely integrated with the mining operations.   The main constituents of a rehabilitation plan: description of existing site conditions, choice of final land use, establishment of final landform, water management and erosion control, soil reconstruction, revegetation and management of rehabilitated land are briefly described.

Upon completion of the 6,200 m (20,340 lineal ft; lft) North Tunnel drive for the Portland East Side Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Tunnel project in Portland, OR, the slurry tunnel boring machine (TBM) had to be returned from the Port Center shaft at Swan Island to the Opera shaft at the main mining site for the 2,700 m (8,860 lft) South Tunnel drive. At the Port Center shaft, the main 513-t (565-st) TBM and TBM tailshield were hoisted out of the shaft in two pieces using four 200-t (220-st) strand jacks mounted on a 635-t (700-st) hydraulic boom gantry system supported by Emmert International?s custom gantry tracks designed to span the shaft. After lifting the TBM components out of the shaft, the gantry system loaded the TBM components onto two Goldhofer platform trailers, which then transported the TBM and tailshield to a barge using a roll-on/roll-off method.

The question of what stress condition exists in the hangingwall of tabular stopes remains topical and largely unanswered. Limited field data exist to quantify the situation and provide calibration for investigative computer modelling exercises. Work conducted in1989 and 1990 under a Chamber of Mines Research Organization (now the CSIR: Division of Mining Technology) programme of research into the behaviour and benefits of backfill may assist with this situation. The original work was motivated by the premise that the improved hangingwall stability in backfilled panels (identified by rockfall accident analyses) is due to a change in the hangingwall stress regime. Current, largely theoretical, studies into mechanisms of stope hangingwall behaviour and support interaction could benefit from considering these data. Effective pyrometallurgical process vessel design requires accurate assessment of the heat fluxes through the walls of the furnace. This is particularly important for freeze lining operation which is designed to protect refractory materials exposed to chemically corrosive molten contents, or facilitate high temperature operation when the refractory materials are used at conditions close to their service limits. Numerical modelling of fluid flow and heat transfer in process vessels is often used to aid in the design of process vessels. Sophisticated models are used to analyse the three dimensional flow and heat transfer predicting the effects of electrical heating, magnetic stirring, buoyancy, shear forces, various cooling effects and ultimately heat fluxes at the walls of the furnace and refractory. Traditionally these models are applied to the separate single fluid systems in a vessel such as the freeboard region including the arc, the slag region and the metal bath. Boundary conditions such as shear forces and heat fluxes between connecting regions such as the slag and metal bath are either estimated or carried over from separate solutions. Shortcomings in these traditional approaches include the estimation of sometimes critical boundary conditions leading to unreliable heat flux calculations. Also when boundary conditions are carried over between solutions, the process is difficult to set up, time-consuming and finally not fully coupled. In this paper the definition and results of a fully integrated numerical model of a complete arc furnace are presented. The most important mechanisms acting in an arc furnace were considered, including the fields of electrical potential, current, magnetism, momentum, heat transfer and radiation. Temperature dependant properties included electrical conductivity, density, viscosity, and thermal conductivity. The geometry consists of the freeboard, the arc, slag, metal baths and different refractory regions. Although the combined model of air, slag and metal would be defined as a multi-phase problem it is not solved as such. Instead the different fluids are separated by sets of special solid baffles. These baffles allow the implicit transfer of current, magnetism, heat transfer and shear forces between the different fluids and disallow mixing of the separate fluids. The strengths of the integrated model are threefold: Firstly, it provides robustness in defining the geometry and boundary conditions for the overall model. Secondly, it provides the capability to switch on and off individual mechanisms such as buoyancy, magnetic stirring and shear forces in order to observe their individual importance. Finally, it provides a useful tool in the design process through its ability to obtain results of parameter changes in short time scales.

A study was undertaken to investigate the relationship between the quantity and value of economic demonstrated resources discovered for 12 mineral commodities over a ten year period and the expenditure required to yield such mineable resources. The results showed that for every dollar spent on exploration, there is an apparent in-ground average value of around $54 dollars contained in the economic resources found. While this appears to be a satisfactory return, it should be remembered that more than 99.9% of exploration programs are judged to be failures because a viable ore body or mineral deposit was not proved up. What is behind this seeming paradox?   The fundamental truth behind mineral exploration is the fact that the more you explore, the more you find, and that one success will often lead to further discoveries. It appears that one rich and viable deposit creates such surplus that its inherent high value ('the pot of gold') makes up for all the failures. In short, mineral exploration is a high risk business with uncertain returns. However, with skill, enthusiasm, experience and venture capital, it can yield larger than normal returns for the brave and the fortunate.   Analysis of exploration expenditure and economic resources discovered for the period 1987 to 1996 revealed that the apparent in-ground value of economic ore discovered per dollar of exploration expenditure varied from a high of $429 for iron ore and $261 for bauxite to a low of $22 for gold and for lead, and $5 per dollar of diamond exploration expenditure. Preliminary conclusions drawn on the reasons for the variations observed include the inherent ease or difficulty of discovery for different mineral commodities which may in some cases, relate to the natural prospectivity of Australia as a whole. Layered deposits like iron ore and bauxite appear to yield higher in-ground value returns on the exploration dollar. To some explorationists, this may be considered as seemingly obvious, but it may have more to do with very large-exploration tenement grants pursued by various Australian State Governments in the early 1950s and 1960s than the apparent ease of delineating a stratabound deposit.   Despite the apparent relatively low in-ground value produced by the gold exploration dollar of $22, the 5660 tonnes of gold discovered in this ten year period was worth $9.1 billion and representing over a quarter of the new mineral wealth created in the ten years to 1996. This contribution, along with that from the other minerals discovered over the period, led to a significant boost to Australia's export income and standard of living.   It is concluded that, given the nexus between the amount of mineral exploration expenditure and the quantity of new resources likely to be discovered, this knowledge may help policy makers seek to influence the rate of resource discovery in countries like Australia for the benefit of the nation.

This paper presents the modern techniques of limestone sawing and quarrying developed and adopted by Indiana Limestone Company, Inc.(ILCI).To fulfill the growing market demands, ILCI’s quarries are committed to deliver planned quantities of all type of stone blocks in a variety of different colors, sizes, and textures. This involves scheduling which quarry ledges should be mined and when in order to minimize unnecessary inventory buildup. Challenges associated with ILCI’s operation are discussed and summarized in the closing of this paper.
