In setting out to describe the methods and machinery employed at Iron Knob the writer does not attempt to give any information as to the situation, topography or geological features of the locality. This, together with estimates of the quantities of ore still available, has been carried out in a most thorough manner by R. L. Jackr and F. R. Hockey. This essay is intended to deal with working methods as they exist to-day, beginning with drilling, blasting, quarry traction, etc., and touching on such details as the supplyof electricity, water and compressed air.At the present time almost the entire output of ore is won from the hill known as Iron Monarch. The form of the hill, a smooth, rounded dome, rising some 640 ft. above the plain and having a base diameter of n miles, lends itself ideally to the "bench" system of open-cut quarrying.Fig. 1 shows the relationship of the benches "A," "B" and "E" in their order of development. The recent depressant research is summarized, and a new kind of depressant (SCO) has been put forward in this article. Using Na-oleate as a collector and SCO as a depressant, separation of dolomite and phosphate was studied. When SCO was added in the concentration range of 80 g/t to 2kg/t at pH 9.5 ± 0.2, dolomite was absolutely depressed, and apatite kept its floatability. Interestingly, in the mixture of phosphate and dolomite, the dolomite floated. The reasons for such a behavior are investigated through flotation and electrokinetic studies. It was found that the adsorption of dissolved species on dolomite and phosphate resulted in reverse flotation. A concentration of 31.59% P205 and 83.87% recovery of P205 was obtained from the mixture of phosphate and dolomite (2:1) with 26.6% P205 using 210 g/t SCO and Na-oleate 4.93*10-5 M at pH 9.

When the slope angles of the southern side of the Venetia open pit were required to be flattened by some 20 degrees after an analysis completed by De Beers geotechnical engineering in conjunction with SRK, the additional waste stripping tonnage generated was in the order of some 70 million tons. The potential cost of having to move this tonnage had a significantly negative effect on the Net Present Value of Venetia Mine, challenging the viability of the third pushback and rendering a potential fourth pushback completely uneconomic. This paper details some of the innovation that went into the design and planning process undertaken to virtually negate the instantaneous effect of the flattened slope angles and the associated waste tonnage as well as further improve the NPV of Venetia Mine and bring the fourth pushback back into economic viability. This process has become known as NPV+ and is anon going exercise in waste reduction/deferment and revenue advancement.

Management of solid mine wastes, particularly waste rock, requires careful planning to reduce the likelihood of sulfide oxidation, and generation of acid rock drainage (ARD). Waste management strategies must focus on obtaining a thorough understanding of the environmental characteristics of future waste rock materials. In this study, a waste management strategy for characterising underground waste rock was developed at a polymetallic underground mine in western Tasmania to determine which materials were appropriate for surficial placement. The criteria for surficial placement set by the regulator were that materials had to be non-acid forming and non-metalliferous. A range of cost-effective field-based tools, mineralogical assessments and mineral chemistry techniques were used on a suite of representative drill core material to determine an appropriate waste management strategy. Ultimately, a modified geochemistry–mineralogy–texture–geometallurgy (GMTG) approach was designed, whereby geoenvironmental focused logging and simple prescreening tools such as paste pH and sulfur analyses were used at stage-one; routine acid base accounting and leachate tests at stage-two; and validation tools including X-ray diffractometry and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICPMS) at stage-three. This approach should be considered for other mine sites at early and operational life-of-mine stages with similar deposit characteristics, to ensure correct screening and placement of potentially hazardous waste materials in suitable above-ground waste repositories or mined-out mine sections.CITATION:Parbhakar-Fox, A and Lottermoser, B G, 2017. Pumpable roof supports provide an alternative approach to secondary support in underground mining. Unlike all other supports that are either partially or fully prefabricated prior to being transported into the mine, the pumpable support is fabricated in place in the mine entry. This reduces the underground material handling efforts and thus the injuries historically associated with in-mine support construction. On-site fabrication also facilitates application of the support in areas that are inaccessible to transportation equipment such as scoops or rail cars, making it ideal for many bleeder applications. One of the main advantages of the pumpable support is that it fully bridges from the mine floor to the roof, thereby eliminating the requirement of ?topping off? the support with wooden wedges or crib blocks that soften most other support responses. This report examines the development of modern pumpable roof support technology and provides a full description of the performance capabilities of each of the support products now on the market.

Critical decisions in iron ore project evaluation and production are based on global and local spatial estimates of primary mineral deposit properties (such as in situ geochemical grades) and geometallurgical responses (such as screened, washed or concentrated product yields and grades), which are derived from limited sample data. These spatial estimates are typically made using classical geostatistical techniques, which fundamentally assume that the attributes of interest behave additively. This assumption is generally appropriate for æprimaryÆ variables but æresponseÆ variables may behave non-additively and therefore their direct linear estimates may be biased.In this paper an existing additivity testing mechanism is used to quantify the bias resulting from direct linear estimation of a non-additive iron ore attribute. Data from a magnetite project are used to determine the circumstances under which such biases may be of material impact. The implications for iron ore resource estimation, geometallurgical modelling and grade control are outlined and discussed.CITATION:Cornah, A J, 2013. During 1996 and 1997, Oregon experienced flooding on a scale not seen in many years. Some gravel pits located near rivers experienced erosion and, in several cases, breaches between the gravel pit and the river. Initial evaluation of several sites that experienced breaches indicates that impacts to the river system are complex and vary significantly from site to site. The impacts to the adjacent river system may be viewed as both positive and negative. Several floodplain-mining sites in Oregon located in areas of historic river flow have reverted to active riverbed. In many cases, state and federal fisheries biologists and university researchers see the resulting increase in channel complexity and habitat as favorable. The Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries – Mined Land Reclamation Program (DOGAMI-MLR) is performing additional studies of the impacts to the off-channel areas that resulted from the 1996 floods. More data is needed to make sound floodplain decisions regarding mining.

An international prediction event was carried out within the framework of a 30-pile testing program organized in a sandy soil in Belgium (Limelette). That program called upon sev­eral testing methods: static load tests, Statnamic testing, and dynamic testing. This paper provides a summary of received predictions and results obtained from the static pile load tests, which were carried up to failure of the instrumented piles. The comparison between predictions is made using load-settlement curves with reference to the results of the static load tests. The predictions are based on a geotechnical approach using an extensive soil investigation program and a dynamic approach using the dynamic load test data.

Crush pillars are widely used in mine workings on the Merensky Reef in the Bushveld Complex to prevent panel collapses. Crush pillars are expected to fail as or soon after they emerge from the face and failure should occur non-violently. Unfortunately, violent failure occurs frequently and is said to be the main cause of seismicity associated with mining of the Merensky Reef. Recent work by Napier, Malan, and du Plessis has shown that limitequilibrium quasi-static models are able to simulate pillar failure using three states of strength of rock in pillars, namely intact, residual after failure, and decayed strength after later time-dependent (viscous) weakening. We have previously introduced an additional state of strength to account for the dynamic failure that results in seismic events, and found that this approach could be used to generate synthetic seismic catalogues similar to observed seismicity for deep-level gold mines, where seismicity takes place mostly on advancing faces. The less brittle seam material of the Merensky Reef, compared to the brittle quartzites and lavas of the Witwatersrand reefs, results in little or no face bursting and is modelled with an assumed plastic strain of some 0.005 over an effective stope width of 2 m before failure. When this plastic yield is surpassed, we allow the reef to fail ?seismically?. We show that synthetic seismic catalogues modelled in this way have some of the features of observed seismicity. Analysis is greatly facilitated using our custom-built software that reads the mine?s survey data into a database and presents results in an interactive graphical form.

US mine production of iron ore in 1984 showed some improvements compared to 1983. But reduced demand from the iron and steel industry caused temporary shutdowns of many iron ore mines and pelletizing plants. US raw steel production in 1984 was slightly above 1983, but still at a depressed level. Production was 83 Mt (92 million st), compared with 77 Mt (85 million st) in 1983 and 68 Mt (75 million st) in 1982. Two major production trends continued in 1984. They were the increased production from electric furnaces and the growing use of continuous casters. Electric furnace production included 33.2% of the steel poured in 1984, compared with 31.5% in 1983. Continuous casting was used for 39% of 1984 steel production, compared with 32.1% in 1983. Statistical Process Control Statistical Process Control (SPC) has taken on new proportions in the iron ore and steelmaking industries within the last year. This mathematical technique is used to monitor, control, evaluate, and analyze a manufacturing process. The technique charts variability of important quality parameters. Training and adaptation of SPC techniaues for process control have been initiated at Inland, Steel's Minorca, Pickands-Mather's Hibtac, Cleveland-Cliff's Empire and Sherman operations, and at Reserve Mining. One of these operations has requested its bentonite supplier provide SPC charts on quality specifications. Some of the steelmaking operations (Inland Steel, Bethlehem Steel, Dofasco, LTV Steel, National Steel, Stelco, Weirton Steel, and Wheeling-Pittsburgh) have set up SPC programs within their operations. And they also have insisted that some of their suppliers use SPC. Plant Shutdowns The permanent closure of Stelco's Griffith mine at Red Lake, Ontario, has been delayed by one year. This gives employees more time to adjust. The mine is now set to close in April 1986, instead of April 1985. Sidbec (Canadian government) and its other partners (including British Steel Corp., Quebec Cartier Mining, and US Steel) closed its iron mining operations at Gagnon, Quebec. The pellet plant has been leased to Quebec Cartier. New Iron Ore Operations The massive Carajas iron ore project in Brazil is scheduled to come onstream in Jan. 1986. It is to achieve full-scale commercial shipments by July of that year. The 66% iron crude ore requires only crushing and screening before shipment. The product consists of 83% sinter feed and 17% coarse ore. Annual production capacity will be 32 Mt (35 million st) when the project is completed. Principal customer for the ore is Nippon Carajas Iron Ore Co., a consortium of Japanese steel mills. The Arab Iron & Steel Co. (AISCO) has started up a $US300 million, 3.6 Mt/a (4 million stpy) iron ore pelletizing plant built by Kobe Steel Ltd., at Al Hidd-hide in Bahrain. By 1986, this grate-kiln-cooler plant will supply high quality iron ore pellets to feed direct reduction plants in the immediate Gulf area and Far East markets. Iron ore supplied from Brazil, Peru, India, and Mauritania provides the feed to the pellet plant. Hydrated lime (2%) is used as a burden.

Electronic and Electric Equipment contains a range of components made of a wide variation of metals, plastics and other substances. Up to 60 elements can be found in complex electronic equipment: base metals, precious metals and special metals in circuit boards and batteries. Because of its amount WEEE represents a considerable metal resource with a higher special and precious metal content than found in ores. The Umicore integrated smelter and refinery recovers and supplies back to the market 17 different metals from EEE. Pre-treated materials enter state of the art, material and energy efficient metallurgical processes for environmentally sound recovery of metals and treatment of off gasses and hazardous substances. The organics in the feed function as reducing agent and alternative energy source during smelting for precious metal recovery. Lithium-ion batteries are treated using a dedicated process. As a result the environmental footprint of metals produced from EEE is much smaller than primary production.

The Western Mining Training and Translation Center is a consortium of four universities devoted to developing educational and training projects to reduce the incidence/accident rates in the mining industry. The center consists of Missouri University of Science and Technology, Montana Tech, the Colorado School of Mines and the University of Utah. It is fully funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The center manages 15 educational projects and one translation project. Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA) for Small Mines is an educational project managed by the University of Utah. The objectives of this project are to identify critical mine hazards, assess risks; outline procedures to reduce accident/incident rates in small mines in the western United States and to train mine workers and super-visors on HIRA in each participating mine. To accomplish these objectives, the HIRA personnel visited 15 small mines in Utah, Colorado, Nevada and California. At these mines, most operators were employing independent contractors to perform several tasks ranging from drilling, blasting and mucking of rock at the work site to hauling ore to a processing plant. The operation of diesel-powered equipment was one of the major tasks performed by the contractors. This article presents three case studies in which contract workers performed a number of tasks with no reportable incidents but did so unsafely. It also highlights the training received by most contractors, the constraints imposed upon them and the safety hazards to which they are exposed most frequently.

In the Coastal Plain sedimentaries of northeastern Mississippi, high-alumina clays and kaolins, which are bauxitized locally to varying degrees, are found in many places along the contact between the Midway (Paleocene) and the Wilcox (Eocene) series. The trace of the contact extends from Tippah County, on the Tennessee border, south to Winston County, thence southeast to Lauderdale County, and into Alabama. Its length within Mississippi, disregarding sinuosities, is 185 miles (fig. 1). Commercial production of bauxite from the region has amounted to about 400 tons, shipped from one outcrop in Komper County. In December 1941 and January 1942, the Bureau of Mines and the Federal Geological Survey made a reconnaissance survey of the contact zone and selected the most promising areas for further study. In 1942, four areas in Benton, Union, and Pontotoc Counties were investigated by auger and rotary core drilling, and in 194, core drilling was done on five areas in Kemper, Noxubee, and Winston Counties. The present report records the work done by the. Bureau of Mines and the factual data obtained from the investigations of the nine areas in the two projects.

The production of high strength iron ore sinter for blast furnace iron making unit was developed by optimizing the granulometry of less than − 0.150 mm fines in sinter base mix which consists of iron ore fines (− 10 mm size with 0.150 mm: 41%), beneficiation plant jig concentrate, i.e., washed ore (− 3 + 0.150 mm size with − 0.150 mm 3 to 9%), beneficiation plant concentrate (− 0.150 mm size 97%), limestone, dolomite, coke breeze, lime, sinter return fines, direct reduced iron (DRI plant) fines, and micropellets produced from steel plant waste. The sintering process consists of preparation of base mix, mixing, and production of nodules using mixing and nodulizing drum by maintaining the optimum moisture, transferring of nodules to the sintering machine, and firing of sinter by applying optimum suction pressure. To optimize the < 0.150 mm fines in sinter base mix, the − 10-mm size iron ore fines was replaced with washed ore. The size analysis, granulation index (G index), and optimization of moisture w.r.t. sinter bed permeability were carried out by varying the washed ore addition from 0 to 55% in sinter base mix to vary the − 0.150 mm fine size. With decrease in washed ore addition from 55 to 0% in sinter base mix the finer fraction, i.e., − 0.150 mm in sinter base mix increased from 9.4 to 26.7%. Granulation (G) index increased from 1.46 to 3.10, sinter bed permeability increased from 33 to 53 Japanese Permeability Unit (JPU), and balling index increased from 1.4 to 3.0. With increase in − 0.150 mm fines in the sinter base mix from 9.4 to 26.7%, the sinter tumbler index (T.I) increased and sinter reduction degradation index (RDI) decreased. Increase in sinter strength and decrease in sinter RDI was due to increase in formation of Silico ferrite of calcium and aluminium (SFCA) phase and decrease in pore phase. The SFCA is the main bonding phase in iron ore sinter, and it provides strength to sinter. Sinter base mix with − 0.150 mm fines 18.9% (washed ore addition 25%) achieved desired sinter properties with moisture 8.0%, G index 2.44, balling index 2.3, and sinter bed permeability > 45JPU. Decreased the sinter properties with washed ore addition in sinter base mix beyond 25% due to decrease in − 0.150 mm fines in sinter base mix. Further, to improve the sinter properties with washed ore 30 to 45%, 3 to 10% beneficiation plant concentrate, i.e., − 0.150 mm fines was added to maintain the 18.9% of − 0.150 mm fines in sinter base mix. From the laboratory sintering studies, it was found that minimum 18.9% (range from 18.9 to 26.7%) − 0.150 mm fines should be maintained in the sinter base mix to achieve desired sinter properties.

"Placer gold mineralizations have been observed in the north-eastern parts of Greece. Some of them have been at first evaluated to be of special interest so, exploration campaigns have been designed and carried out. Among the other exploration techniques applied on the sites of interest, drilling was the one to give the detailed information and data for the evaluation of the deposits. Having collected the data from trenching and two consecutive drilling campaigns, they were processed geostatistically to estimate the ore reserves and therefore the economic interest of the deposits. The latter was done by using exploitability indices, which would give a rough idea whether the deposits were economically feasible. A small number of such deposits have been spotted in the area and have been explored and evaluated as above. The present paper deals with the most important of them, giving all the process followed and the results derived from the exploration carried out."

"A new process is disclosed for the recovery of gold and/or silver values from activated carbon wherein they are adsorbed as cyanide complexes. A unique chemistry allows the new process to use mill process water containing an inexpensive, non-hazardous compound as the eluant. The new process has an elution period of 5 hours at 98°C. The gold in the eluant can be recovered by electrowinning or zinc precipitation. The new elution process is simple, reliable, and provides an eluted carbon that may not require thermal regeneration before reuse. Retrofitting the new process to existing processes such as Zadra, Anglo, and others will not require significant capital expenditures.IntroductionThe efficient and reliable elution process for gold/silver from activated carbon is a very important process in the gold mining industry. The most common techniques for elution of gold cyanide from activated carbon are the Zadra and Anglo procedures.Specialized elution techniques like the Micron and Acetonitrile processes have not been commercialized to significant extent probably due to relatively complex unit operations and expensive reagents.Important functions of the gold recovery circuit are:Efficiently recover gold/silver from the loaded carbon.Carbon is in good condition for reuse for optimum recovery.The pregnant solution is amenable to electrowinning or zinc precipitation to recover gold/silver from the solution.The whole process to be simple and short to reduce gold inventories.Present Elution ProcessesTable 1 shows some carbon elution processes that are available today. The two main elution processes used in the industry are: (1) the Zadra process, in which hot cyanide solution is circulated through an elution column and electrowinning cells; and (2) the Anglo American Research Laboratory (Anglo) process, consisting of a pretreatment step with caustic cyanide solution, followed by elution with deionized water."

During the latter part of 1937 consideration was given to the construction of a; local smelting plant for producing blister copper. Previously copper concentrates had been shipped to the United States of America. The proposition had the advantages of a saving in cost of realization, quicker financial return and reduced dependence on overseas shipping.The smelter was designed by the existing staff, who had difficulty in obtaining data on small plants, particularly on the reverberatory furnace. Construction was started in March, 1938, and the reverberatory was blown in on January 16th, 1939. One roaster had been operating for several weeks prior to this date.While results and operating technique on this new departure in small-scale smelting are barely beyond the experimental stage, it is felt that the experience gained to this time should be recorded to help fill the obvious gap in published information covering plants of this type.At present there are three copper smelters operating in Australia; the other two plants are equipped with blast furnaces.LOCATIONThe new smelter is situated in a position convenient to the concentrator and to the power plant. An unprecedented expansion of the global zinc industry is currently under way. While most new projects and plant upgrades remain committed to traditional processing technologies, recent advances in zinc solvent extraction (SX) have created opportunities for new process routes for both primary and secondary materials. The first commercial plant to use zinc SX for the mainstream processing of a low-grade ore is under construction and promises to become one of the lowest cost zinc producers. Several other oxide and sulphide projects in various stages of feasibility are considering the inclusion of SX in their process flowsheet. Zinc SX has also proved advantageous in the reprocessing of secondary materials, particularly for the treatment of zinc residues and furnace dusts. This review focuses on recent installations and projects underdevelopment that feature zinc SZ as the key separation step.

The Cononish gold-silver deposit is a steep, relatively narrow quartz-vein system, with a current total mineral resource of 154 000 oz Au and 589 000 oz Ag. The northeast-southwest trending system was emplaced into late Proterozoic metasediments, and postdates metamorphism and associated Caledonian Orogenic foliations. Assay and mineralogical data show that gold and silver is spatially associated with sulfides in quartz. The main sulfide is pyrite, but galena, chalcopyrite and sphalerite occur in small amounts. Gold occurs as electrum, with minor native gold, and silver occurs additionally as tellurides and native metal. The gold/electrum is fine-grained, generally less than 100 microns in size. The main ore shoots plunge 45¦ south-west, have a 40 m to 80 m intersection with the existing underground development and extend between 40 m and 260 m down plunge. Small-scale sulfide-bearing domains within the vein carry the highest gold grades. They collectively define the ore shoots, where one or two, and rarely three, of the domains are present at an individual site in the vein. Discontinuity of individual domains, variation in domain thickness and internal heterogeneity results in short scale variation in grade across the structure. Geological mapping along a 1.2 km exploration adit has provided critical æconditioningÆ data to support resource evaluation based on development and relatively wide spaced drilling. In addition, it has provided an indication of potential challenges that could be encountered during production.

Brazil&apos;s gross domestic product (GDP) grew only slightly in 1988 to $277 billion at current prices.2 The growth rate was the smallest registered since 1983, when the rate was minus 2.8%. The economy&apos;s performance was strongly influenced by a 2% to 3% decrease in industrial production and civil construction. The mineral industry, however, countered the downward trend in the industrial sector and grew a modest 1.4%. In November, Brazil adopted a new Constitution that placed significant restrictions on foreign investment in the mineral industries. Under certain provisions of the new Constitution, foreign companies were prohibited from establishing new mining ventures in Brazil as sole or majority owners. They could now enter the mineral industry only as minority shareholders with Brazilian partners. Foreign companies already established in Brazil had a 4-year grace period to find majority Brazilian partners, or to establish vertically integrated processing operations (mining, processing, smelting, and refining). The new Constitution also prohibited foreign risk contracts for petroleum exploration.
