Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Tech (Metallurgical Engineering) degree Fine coal of the Goedehoop Colliery is dewatered by centrifuging before being sold. Full-scale plant tests were carried out to reduce residual cake moisture by the addition of surfactants. It is believed that by modifying the interface between the coal surface and the adherent surface water, as well as the water occluded in the cake voids, drainage is improved. Two anionic surfactants at concentrations up to 150 g/t were tested on coal of <0.5 mm size. The results demonstrate that quite high additions of surfactant (80 g/t)were needed to reduce moisture from 20 to about 17?18%. It was observed that when increasing surfactant additions at low levels, within a very narrow concentration range, the retained moisture first increased sharply only to decrease sharply immediately thereafter; this effect points to a critical surfactant concentration. Based on the obtained results, the use of surfactants cannot be recommended at this stage; further investigations under more controlled conditions are required.

"Laboratory and miniplant testwork was carried out to reject uranium from an Iron Oxide Copper Gold (IOCG) deposit that contains an average of 60-70 ppm uranium with high variability. The dominate copper bearing mineral is chalcopyrite with minor bornite and trace covellite. The main gangue minerals are iron-rich chlorite, quartz and magnetite. The main uranium-containing mineral is uraninite (UO2). Downstream processes require the maximum uranium level of no more than 80 ppm in final copper concentrate.Mineralogical examination reveals that uraninite particles are finely disseminated with grain size of less than a few microns in the deposit requiring fine regrind in order to liberate uraninite from chalcopyrite particles. A lab flowsheet was developed to include ultrafine regrind of the rougher concentrate to the particle size of 80% passing 11-13 µm with up to four stages of recleaning in flotation columns. Finer regrind to 80% passing 5-6 µm may continue to improve liberation but does not decrease uranium level in the final concentrate. In each of the successive recleaning stages by flotation column after fine regrind, uraninite is rejected into the column tailings, with the final copper gold concentrate containing less than 70 ppm uranium from a feed containing 83 ppm uranium. The conceptual flowsheet was further tested in an integrated, continuous miniplant showing average 94% copper recovery with average 74 ppm uranium. The uraninite particles that report to the final concentrate are either locked with chalcopyrite or entrained as liberated particles of less than 5 µm in size.IntroductionIron Oxide Copper Gold (IOCG) deposits are copper and gold ores hosted within a large body of iron oxide and are significant ore deposits for copper and gold (Williams, et al., 2005). These deposits can also contain economic levels of other metals such as uranium and rare earth elements. The known sizes of IOCG deposits range from 10 to 4,000 million tonnes with grade of 0.2-5% copper and 0.1-3 g/t gold. One of the greatest IOCG deposits is Olympic Dam in South Australia. It is the fourth largest copper deposit and the largest uranium deposit in the world. Gold and silver in the deposit also contribute significantly to the total revenue."

"Control of fugitive dust has become increasingly important in the mining industry both from a health and safety and environmental standpoint. Mining operations in particular have required improved fugitive dust control due to recent lowering of the allowable airborne silica concentration to which workers can be exposed. Experience has now proven that the implementation of a surfactant based chemical dust suppression system can enhance existing mechanical dust control methods resulting in much more efficient control of fugitive dust.The Porcupine Joint Venture (Dome Mine) utilizes dry secondary crushing and screening that makes it particularly prone to fugitive dust emissions. A variety of potential dust control systems were evaluated and this led to the installation of a surfactant based water spray system to augment the existing mechanical dust collection systems.A great deal was learned through the implementation of this system. This paper describes the entire process, from testing, system design and installation, through optimization and standardization of operation. In addition a variety of problems were identified, and innovative solutions were provided. Also, the metallurgical impacts on down stream processing are highlighted. Finally, a full discussion of overall results including a discussion of the relationship between silica and total dust concentrations is included."

Measurements from an old survey are being machine processed as a pilot project in the development of a computer-assisted method of structural mapping in shield areas. The key element in the system is a field data sheet which requires the geologist to determine a textural hierarchy in each exposure. The pilot system is limited to orientation analysis and utilizes a prior textural analysis, but this would not usually be a problem in utilizing the system ab initio for exploration. A data processing system of this general type offers promise of considerably increased productivity of field geologists by reducing compilation time and improved technical supervision through centralization of processing, and would make structural analysis an economically viable tool in mining exploration and development.

"Work in CSIRO with several Australian ores has shown that?by heating a high-phosphorus goethitic iron ore and then leaching with caustic or acid, the phosphorus levels in the ore can be lowered to a commercially acceptable value of around 0.08 weight per cent phosphorus (P). With increasing heating temperatures up to 1300¦C, the extent of phosphorus removal increased. This is considered to be associated with mineralogical changes in the iron oxide phases in the ore during the heating.Little phosphorus was removed from four high-phosphorus goethitic iron ores containing 0.12 - 0.16 weight per cent P in leaches with boiling water. However, leaches with sulfuric acid removed ten to 20 weight per cent of the phosphorus and leaching with sodium hydroxide removed even more phosphorus to produce leach products containing between 0.08 and 0.12 weight per cent P from three of the ores.After heating at 300¦C, leaches at a low pulp density of 0.5 weight per cent solids with 1 - 5 M NaOH and 0.1 - 1 M H2SO4 gave leach products with 0.06 - 0.09 weight per cent P. The lixiviant concentration required and extent of phosphorus removal depended on the ore. At a higher pulp density of 25 weight per cent solids, leach residues with between 0.07 - 0.14 weight per cent P were obtained.More phosphorus was removed from ores heated at 900¦C. Leaches at both the low and high pulp densities, with 1 - 5 M NaOH and 0.1 - 1 M H2SO4, gave leach products with 0.05 - 0.09 weight per cent P. However, the lowest phosphorus levels were obtained after heating the ores at 1200 or 1300¦C and leaching with 1 M NaOH or 0.1 M H2SO4. Leach residues with 0.02 - 0.06 weight per cent P were obtained, even from leaches at the higher pulp density of 25 weight per cent solids. Leaching tests on heated samples under heap leaching conditions at ambient temperatures have shown that phosphorus levels can be reduced to similar levels to that achieved in an agitation leach within ten days.CITATION:Fisher-White, M J, Lovel, R R, Sparrow, G J and Washington, B M, 2013. The event was Knight Piésold and Co.’s Roundtable 2007, held in Elko, NV. It was third such event put on by the company. The issue this year was site-wide water considerations.

The Toulon Tunnel project is a key component of the highway corridor on the French Riviera between Marseille and Nice and is a fundamental transportation infrastructure for the region. The first design studies started in the 1960s. The tunnel project is comprised of two separate tunnels: south and north. The north tunnel was built between 1992 and 2002 after 10 years of difficult construction. On March 15, 1996, for example, a collapse of the tunnel in the Marchand area generated a sinkhole in the city center, causing a 20-month delay. The south tunnel alignment runs parallel to the north tunnel below Toulon?s historical downtown at a depth of 20 to 40 m (65 to 131 ft) with some areas with less than 10 m (32 ft) of cover. The risk management program was studied to be a state of the art program in urban tunneling construction.

The National Mining Hall of Fame will hold its 13thAnnual Induction Banquet during MINExpo International 2000 in Las Vegas, NV. The gala black-tie (optional) event will honor eight legendary leaders of the mining industry. The event will take place at the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel on Sunday, Oct. 8. The induction ceremonies will salute mining greats elected by the board of governors from a list of nominees submitted by mining industry partners and the public. The members of the Class of 2000 will join 151 other inductees enshrined in the Mining Hall of Fame in Leadville, CO. The evening will begin at 6 pm with a cash bar reception followed by the banquet and program at 7 pm. Keynoting the banquet program will be Harrison (Jack) Schmitt. He was the geologist/astronaut of the Apollo 17 mission to the moon in 1972 (see related story on page 26). And he is the only scientist to “kick rocks on the moon.” Schmitt is also a member of the Mining Hall’s board of governors. Schmitt was also the keynote speaker at the First Annual Induction Banquet in Denver, CO in 1988.

ONE DAY IN the mid-1880s, in a suburb 0f Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, there dismounted from a train the two foremost leaders of the day in the coal and steel industries-Andrew Carnegie and H. C. Frick. Their attention was drawn to a well-loaded car of coke, which their experienced eyes recognized as a superior product. "I&apos;ll bet you that coke is from the H. C. Frick Coke Company," Mr. Frick challenged. "I&apos;ll bet it was shipped by my company." In a spirit of fun Mr. Carnegie accepted the wager. Mr. Frick lost the bet: the coke had come from M0rewood, one of three sites being operated under the direction of a young entrepreneur, Erskine Ramsay. If Mr. Frick&apos;s confidence was somewhat dented by this occurrence, the responsibility was his own. He himself had opened the way for Erskine Ramsay to become the youngest of mine superintendents; and he had dispersed all dissension regarding his choice with the words : "I&apos;m not interested in his years, I&apos;m interested in his record. He makes more coke in an oven than any other superintendent. And I&apos;ll take &apos;em out 0f the cradle if they can make coke... Suppose he is only twenty years old? ... The d --- kid is a genius, I tell you." Erskine Ramsay was to follow in the tradition of Carnegie and Frick. Not only was he ambitious and a worker his background had prepared him for it. Coal mining was in the Ramsay blood. His father, Robert Ramsay, of whom the son once stated that he had no superior as coal mining and mechanical engineer in this country, once accounted in these words for the phenomenal accomplishments which had attached to the name "It does no harm to belong to a family of mining engineers who are just as good as any in America-if it is myself that says it." Anyone acquainted with Robert Ramsay&apos;s character realized that he was not given to overstatement. And the above-mentioned Mr. Carnegie encountered young Ramsay again, a few years later in his career, and wrote of him to young Erskine&apos;s father, that he was "going to be a credit `tae us a&apos; " (a quotation from Robert Burns.) Nor have Mr. Ramsay&apos;s achievements been identified exclusively with the industrial field in which he early asserted himself. He has been an inventor whose techniques in mining engineering have received international recognition. As an investor of foresight, he has benefitted others immeasurably, as well as himself, being an influential factor in the upbuilding of several communities in his chosen and well-loved adopted home state of Alabama since 1887. He is a philanthropist whose benefactions have run into millions, the chief beneficiaries being educational and charitable institutions. The compilation of the sampling nomogram is an essential tool in the optimization of a sampling protocol and allows the operator to track the change in relative variance of the sampling error (the Fundamental sampling error) during steps of comminution and mass reduction in the process of recovery of the aliquot for analysis. The data required for the compilation of the nomogram are centred on the sampling constant K and the exponent, alpha (a) of the nominal fragment size. Five methods for establishing K have been identified, but two of them, the duplicate sampling analysis method and the heterogeneity test method purport to provide such constant. The step by step procedure for each of these two methods was examined using broken ores from three mines, Mponeng mine, Kloof mine, and Lily mine. Two of these mines (Mponeng and Kloof) are typical Witwatersrand-type gold mines, and the third is an Archaean-type shear related gold deposit situated in the Barberton Greenstone belt. The results suggest that the factor K derived using the heterogeneity test is very accurate, but applies only to a single size fraction in the spectrum of comminuted materials. The calculation of gold grain sizes using this method appear to be too small and do not conform with the results from detailed mineralogical studies. The factors K and alpha derived using the duplicate series analysis are appropriate for use across a wide spectrum of comminution sizes and also provide realistic gold grain sizes, comparable with the equivalent circular diameter of gold grains identified in mineralogical studies of the ores.

A detailed analysis of the geomechanical behaviour in rock cutting with a diamond saw is provided to obtain a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in the process. The energy of elastic deformation (before failure) and plastic deformation (post failure) was determined in uniaxial compression tests as well as the energy consumed per unit volume in the cutting process. The test samples are White and Ruivina marbles from Borba - Vila Viçosa in Portugal. Correlations between total deformation specific energy and cutting specific energy, normal and tangential forces and diamond indentation are analysed, and some conclusions are presented.

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) Mae Moh coal mine is an open-cut coal mine in Thailand that produces about 16 Mt of lignite annually to generate 2400 MW of electricity. The surface mine pit covers is 4 km by 7 km with mining depths ranging up to 260 m. A large pit slope is formed with the progression of the mining operation. However, massive slides in the pit slope occur often due to the existence weak planes such as faults and bedding, and the weak mechanical properties of the rocks. Hence, 200 m to 300 m boundaries of rock block including coal seams are left in front of faults in order to prevent slides and maintain the stability of the pit slope. As a result, there are significant coal reserves beneath the abandoned area along the pit slope. Moreover, the mined coal seams are very thick and their thickness range from 15 to 30 m.This paper discusses the application of multi-slicing highwall mining system with stowing to this very thick coal seam left around large pit slopes by means of numerical analysis.

Technology to enhance safety during mine hoisting has been developed by researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Assessment of current hoisting technology suggests that monitoring conveyance position and load directly from the skip or cage top offers several significant safety advantages. Wireless data transmission schemes and a package consisting of sensors, batteries, and a charger mounted on the wire rope and skip have been developed. A state-of-the-art automated hoisting test facility was constructed to test the concept in a controlled laboratory setting. Field tests in a fill-size shaft are underway.

Lead-zinc production at MIM, Mount Isa includes three mines, a lead concentrator, zinc filter plant and lead refinery. Lead production is vertically integrated with lead-silver bullion shipped from Australia to London for refining. Zinc is sold as a concentrate. All three mines have reached varying states of maturity mining a multitude of orebodies having significant variation in grades and metallurgical recovery for three metals. Based on current levels of measured resources, the remaining project life is at least ten years. The objective is to schedule production over the life of all three mines so as to maximize the present value of the complex. Additional scheduling complexity arises out of the implementation of long-term schedules, capital expansion projects for both mining and processing, the presence of substantial inferred reserves and interactions with MIM copper production. A large-scale, time-dynamic, life-of-complex Mixed Integer Program (MIP) production schedule was formulated to optimize lead/zinc cash flow based on a detailed life of project production scheduling study. The requirements for such a study are detailed herein. The operational feasibility of the MIP solution is compared against a non-optimal approach to strategic life-of-mine scheduling. The strategic planning emphasis placed on the MIP is compared to the implementation of a life-of-mine schedules at Mount Isa using spreadsheets and other popular commercial mine schedulers.

Process Options for Difficult Arid-Region Nickel Laterites In the absence of the discovery of significant nickel sulfide deposits, the future of Australia&apos;s nickel industry will increasingly depend on cost effect processes for low-grade nickel laterites. The problems encountered with the West Australian HPAL plants, resulting in three of the four plants being shut down, have caused the industry to revisit atmospheric leaching options, particularly heap leaching. West Australian laterites are characteristically very varied in grade, chemical composition and mineralogy with the result that, thus far, one process does not fit all laterites. In this paper the leaching of an especially refractory ore is compared using column leaching of whole ore and atmospheric leaching and HPAL processing of ground ore. The key characteristic is the resistance of the goethite phase to acid attack with low-to-moderate temperature leaching conditions. The refractory characteristic is attributed to the stabilising influence of chromium and aluminium and possibly manganese substitution in the goethite crystal structure and goethite morphology. A significant three-fold increase in both nickel and cobalt extractions under atmospheric leaching conditions was achieved by the relatively simple modification of bubbling sulfur dioxide into the reaction vessel to create a reducing environment. Recoveries increased from &lt;30 per cent to 90 per cent nickel and 86 per cent cobalt after 10 hours of leaching at 95¦C. An even greater improvement was achieved under ambient conditions by heating the ore to temperatures above 250¦C for 30&nbsp;minutes. Subsequent leaching at ambient temperature gave an eight-fold increase in both nickel and cobalt recoveries after 14 days bottle rolling. Both methods could be optimised and implemented in such a way as to increase laterite reserves in conjunction with a heap leach operation but may be better suited to vat or closed tank processing.

INTRODUCTION The Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) Tunnel Scheme is part of the Alimineti Madhava Reddy Project in Andhra Pradesh, South India. This scheme has been planned since 1983 and will provide irrigation facilities to drought-ridden areas in Andhra Pradesh. Water will be transferred from the Srisailam Reservoir during the monsoon months to 0.3 million acres of farmland and will also provide drinking water to villages en-route. The paper will address the design and onsite assembly of the Robbins Double Shield TBMs for Tunnel-1 of the SLBC tunnel scheme from planning to start-up of the machines. Also, it will provide a current status of the project and describe the advantages of a site assembly. Problems encountered to date and the solutions adopted will also be described. The project comprises over 50 km of tunnels and involves construction of the world?s longest tunnel without intermediate access. The TBM tunnels at 43.9 km in length and 10.0 m diameter will cross the Amrabad plateau, containing a wild life sanctuary and India?s largest tiger reserve, the Rajiv Gandhi. Jaiprakash elected to excavate the tunnel using two tunnel boring machines, rather than by drill and blast, in order to alleviate surface disturbances to environment and the tiger reserve, wild life sanctuary, and protected forestry areas. The Project was awarded to the Main Contractor Jaiprakash Associates Ltd with The Robbins Company as the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) supplier in August 2005. The Robbins Company supplied the TBMs along with two continuous conveyor systems and all spares and consumables to complete the tunnel excavation.

China has abundant magnesite resource, but the low-grade and powder ores have always been rejected, which influences the comprehensive utilization of resource and often causes circumstance problems. The present work investigated the preparation of magnesia whisker using magnesite tailings as starting materials by preparation magnesium carbonate whisker as precursor firstly in the route of calcination, hydration, carbonation and pyrolysis, follows by second calcination of the precursor. The influence of pyrolysis conditions and additives on morphology of magnesium carbonate crystal as well as the influence of calcination conditions on morphology of magnesia whisker was investigated. The results showed that thermal decomposition products was MgCO3?3H2O. Magnesium carbonate whisker with length of 10~60 µm and the length-to-diameter ratio of 10~20 was prepared when soluble magnesium salt was added. While temperature was elevated at 1°C?min-1, magnesia whisker with length of 10~60µm was obtained.

Demonstration of Solid-Liquid Separations Using Recycled Supernatant that Contains Temperature-Responsive Polymer The effective use of recycled supernatant that contains temperature-responsive flocculant is demonstrated for solid-liquid separations. The recyclability of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) of several different molecular weights and a 15 per cent negatively charged derivative are compared. Batch settling tests of a-alumina suspensions are first conducted at 50¦C, with a subsequent 25¦C period, after which the supernatant is harvested and used to flocculate subsequent suspensions. Using this procedure consecutive separations are obtained with the repeated recycling of uncharged PNIPAM containing supernatant. Batch settling tests indicate that hindered settling rates increase with molecular weight of PNIPAM. Adsorption studies indicate that strong adsorption of PNIPAM onto alumina occurs with PNIPAM at 50¦C and that significant desorption occurs after cooling at 25¦C. However, the extent of desorption decreases with molecular weight resulting in low amounts of PNIPAM for recycling and poor settling behaviour when high molecular weight PNIPAM is recycled. Little recyclability was evident using the negatively charged PNIPAM. On the basis of these findings a recycling-thickener apparatus that uses low molecular weight uncharged PNIPAM is proposed.

Anode slimes produced during copper electrorefining are a valuable source of silver, gold, selenium and tellurium. The conventional pyrometallurgical process for treating slimes involves preliminary leaching in sulphuric acid followed by smelting in a reverberatory furnace with fluxes, but it is slow and has many recycle streams. The chemistry of the phases and the reactions that occur in slimes smelting are poorly understood and and this prevents major improvements to the process. Laboratory-scale experiments were conducted using unleached slimes, with and without the addition of fluxes and under neutral, oxidising and reducing conditions. Results show that selenium is readily removed as gaseous selenium dioxide and that molten Cu-Ag-Se-O phases form when fluxes are added. Oxidation-refining of these phases by air injection and flux addition can result in the formation of silver suitable for further electrorefining

The Crandall Canyon accident investigation included an interesting and unexplained observation by rescuers that the ?barrier rib had shifted northward as a unit, as much as 10 feet.? This is not the first mention of such a movement, although such reports are rare. Historical accounts describe unusual movement and displacement of intact coal, cribs and timbers. Two movements of particular interest are the creation of gaps above coal pillars and falling of standing support elements without apparent damage. A dynamic boundary element program was used to explore movements induced by slip on geologic features removed from the affected panel. While the resulting models are much too simple to fully replicate these observations, they do show that the types of phenomena observed are possible. They can also provide insight into the types of motions that ground support elements are subjected to during large bump events. This was demonstrated for the case of a large bump in a Book Cliffs coal mine. Seismic information suggested the source mechanism to be normal slip on a fault. A model of that source showed initial dilation of the panel followed by dynamic compression and rebound ? consistent with underground observations. The initial dilation is important as it may allow slender standing support to shift or fall.
