"INTRODUCTION Zinc must be of high grade to satisfy the present demand. Even when the amount of premium paid is small, the purer metal as the buyers' preference. The following specifications for spelter were taken from the American Society for Testing Materials for 1927, Part I, pane 524. (The specifications for 1930, p. 582, are tile same.)Another specification for zinc of a much higher grade than any of the above has been established lately by the same society. The committee on zinc die-casting (Proc. Am. Soc. Test. Mat., vol. 31, 1931, p. 263) reached the following, conclusions: I. ""That the purest of zinc is necessary to produce stable zinc-base die castings, and as a result requested specifications for zinc spelter .with total impurities not over 0.02 percent."" Their tests showed that the die castings made of the purest zinc had the least elongation and the greatest tensile strength, and exhibited the least changes with temperature.Still more far-reaching claims are made for the properties of zinc containing over 99.99 percent metal. Zinc foil, for instance, may someday be made as a common commercial product. It would seem likely that the demand for zinc of high grades rill continue and that even purer varieties may be desired. This demand fits in with the modern trend in manufacturing plants of reducing the number of variables to a minimum by using pure materials, and of controlling the processing of metals during their various stages of fabrication by mechanical means instead of by expert laborers."

The objective of the ? 200 million ($280 million) project Parma Railways Station-Urban Transformation was the reconnection of the North and South parts of the town by constructing an 80 m (250 ft) wide sunken artery passing under the four double railway tracks of the station without any impact on train traffic. The site of the project, adjacent to the Parma River, presented water seepage problems at any excavation depth. The use of conventional large diameter bored pile machinery was not allowed by the Railway Authority because equipment dimension and construction phases do not comply with train traffic safety regulations. Foundations for the bypass were thus constructed by minipiles nested into jet-grouted soil using machinery operating within the existing head room and at a safe distance from the tracks. Jet-grouting treatment reached depths of 25 to 28 m (80 to 90 ft) from tracks? grade and embedded minipile-heads were terminated at 2 to 3 m (6.6 to 10 ft) below grade. Load tests on minipiles were pushed to failure. Failure occurred at a 240 t (265 t) load without breakage of the bond between the jet grouted soil and the minipiles. A 0.93 MPa (135 psi) shear resistance ??? between minipile steel casing and the jet grouted soil was measured prior to the failure of the steel casings. Overall measured foundation settlements were well within expected values and were considered insignificant.

Beginning in 1987, miniature dataloggers approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) were publicly available for sale. The principal among these was the model CR21XQM, manufactured by Campbell Scientific, Inc. These dataloggers had been tested and were deemed permissible by MSHA and thus could be installed in the return air of an underground coal mine. In 1996, production of all permissible Campbell Scientific dataloggers ceased due to lack of sales. Data collection with these dataloggers has been a staple of ground control research in the United States for decades, and, without them, or a replacement, the capability to monitor ground behavior is severely impacted. Since that time, any party requiring a permissible datalogger has needed to borrow one that was purchased during the production years. In order to fill this technology gap and ensure its own data-gathering capabilities, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed and refined its own miniature data acquisition system (MIDAS). On February 16, 2010, MSHA deemed the MIDAS to be permissible and approved it for use in the return air of an underground coal mine. The MIDAS is an intrinsically safe, 16- or 24-bit datalogger, compatible with a wide range of resistive, single-ended, and differential-type instrumentation. It contains enough data storage memory to operate for over a year with typical data rates and is efficient enough to do this on a single C-sized alkaline battery for that entire period. It is menu-driven and requires no programming knowledge to operate. It supports wireless or hardwired communication for datalogger setup and data download. This paper describes the design, field and laboratory testing, and capabilities of the MIDAS datalogger. While not as fully -functioned as the CR21XQM, it is the only new permissible datalogger available, and there is intent to make it available to the mining industry for purchase.

The addition of a thallous salt to the cyanide leach of a calcined pyritic concentrate causes a marked increase in the rate of extraction of gold. This is due probably to the activation of passive gold by the thallous ions. Lead, bismuth, and mercury salts, which should produce a similar effect, fail to do so. It is postulated that this latter result, together with the reprecipitation of silver at low cyanide levels, is due to the presence of soluble sulphide.INTRODUCTIONThe work of Fink and Putnam (1950) showed that the rate of solution of gold in cyanide can be increased by the addition of small amounts of lead, bismuth, mercury, and thallium salts. Mills (1951), during a study of the electrochemistry of gold, with particular reference to cyanidation, was able to show that gold may become passive towards cyanide solution. The addition of lead or thallium salts prevented this passivity, although the action of lead was limited to the pH range 10 to 12. In a recent paper Cathro (1963) confirmed the findings of Mills, and presented results which showed that the addition of thallium to a cyanide leach of a calcine from Lake View and Star mine, Kalgoorlie, increased the rate of extraction of gold appreciably. With the steady increase of molybdenum demand worldwide and the favorable molybdenum market, many technological innovations on both process and equipment have been developed and applied in many modern molybdenum plants around the world. This paper introduces the most commonly used molybdenum flotation flowsheet, together with the introduction of the flotation chemistry. Many different types of flotation cells are used in modern moly plants, and each type of flotation cell has its own unique advantages suited for particular ore and process conditions. "In the mining industry, rock excavation is the first phase of the comminution process. Downstreamoperations such as secondary breaking, crushing and milling terminate the process, reducing the size of the grains down to the desired particle distribution. In such a cascade process, every process upstream heavily influences all the downstream operations. When rock excavation is carried out by drilling and blasting, a very economic source of energy (the explosive) is used at the utmost upstream; a more expensive source of energy (electricity) is employed for all the downstream phases. This means that managing the correct employ of the explosive energy is a form of managing the whole process, controlling the operational costs and therefore the profitability of the whole business. We simulated this cascade behavior, using as a starting point the experimental data obtained from small-scale block blasting, evaluating the influence of blasting on the grindability of the blasted material. This study showed the reduction in visible (particle size) and invisible fracturing (micro-cracking, resulting in a reduction of the Work Index WI). The particle size distribution for full-scale blasts was estimated by means of algorithm simulation, then we simulated the behavior of the comminution plant fed with the material possessing the characteristics previously estimated. All the costs (drilling, blasting, electric energy for the engines of the crushers and mill) were calculated and charted. The results show a clear curve that allows to estimate the minimum operating expenditure (OPEX) for the whole mine+plant framework. Being the WI dependent on the output on the blast, one can manage the performance and the expenditure of the whole comminution process by adjusting drilling and blasting parameters For any given mine, it is possible to perform a simulation and encounter the minimum OPEX scenario for the comminution process and managerial choices can be oriented accordingly. In a cascade productive chain as mining is, responsible strategic choices must be taken looking at the entire production framework. Compartmentalized managerial staff and budgets for separated production areas are not acceptable anymore. Somehow higher costs upstream can lead to effective decrease in costs and increase in efficiency and productivity of the processes downstream."

The main objective of this work was to investigate the effect of binder addition on the geochemical properties of surface paste tailings. Nine leaching columns were prepared following different disposal configurations: non-cemented, non-cemented with cemented layers, and cemented .The proportions of cement by total paste weight were between 0 and 1% for a whole column; the maximum amount of cement in a single layer was 2%. The material used was a sulphide-rich tailings coming from a Canadian hard rock polymetallic mine. The columns have been flushed once a week during 30 weeks. The recovered leachates were analyzed for pH, Eh, conductivity, and a wide range of elements. The drainage rates were monitored during the initial disposal as well as after each column flush. The results show that binder addition can improve the whole environmental performances for some of the studied disposal configurations. The disposal configuration consisting of intercalation of three 2% cement paste layers within non-cemented layers (0.66 wt.% of cement for the whole column), and the configuration with 2% cement added only in the two bottom layers (0,44 wt.% of cement for the whole column), showed the best results in terms of water quality and drainage rates.

"Three models to predict the effect of bubble size (Db) on metallurgical response were tested in a pilot-scale flotation column at Teck Highland Valley Copper mine. The column was fed with slurry collected from the Cu/Mo separation circuit. The first model was the one developed by Gorain et al. (1997), which assumes that the collection zone rate constant (kc) is inversely proportional to Db. The second model was the one proposed by Hernandez-Aguilar et al. (2010), which considers kc as an inverse square function of Db. The third model was the one developed by Yoon and Luttrell (1989) which provides expressions to describe the efficiency of particle collection (E) based on first principles. The results showed a significant bias between experimental and predicted data using the model of Gorain et al. (1997), possibly reflecting the model’s inability to explain the impact of bubble size, bubble rise velocity and flow regime on E. The model of Hernandez-Aguilar et al. (2010) well described the experimental evidence. The model of Yoon and Luttrell gave accurate and unbiased predictions. However, Yoon and Luttrell’s approach calls for a criterion to determine whether the flow regime is potential or intermediate, a subject that requires more fundamental research.INTRODUCTIONParticle collection, i.e., bubble-particle collision followed by attachment, is the basis of flotation. In a quiescent environment (such as the one observed in a column, or away from the impeller in a mechanical cell), a collision event can take place as long as the “degree of turbulence” caused by the rising bubble does not prevent particle and bubble to flow in close proximity. Upon collision, the particle slides on the bubble surface for a period of time. If the particle is hydrophobic, attachment occurs when the “sliding time” is longer than the “induction time”, which is the time required to thin and rupture the intervening liquid (usually water) film forming a three-phase contact angle. While the induction time is largely influenced by the degree of hydrophobicity of the particle, the degree of turbulence is governed by the bubble size. Generally, direct control of bubble size is not exercised by most mineral processing practitioners, in spite of its obvious importance. Studies to model the effect of bubble size on particle collection using fundamental approaches have been conducted (e.g., Anfruns and Kitchener, 1977; Webber and Paddock, 1983; Yoon and Luttrell, 1989; Dai et al., 1999). However, these models have been validated under highly idealized laboratory conditions (micro-scale experiments using single minerals and uni-sized bubbles), far from resembling those existing in practical industrial applications. Fundamental studies to interpret the effect of bubble size on particle collection in industrial environments are largely absent in the literature. Partly because of this lack of practical knowledge, many mineral processing practitioners perceive laboratory “bubble size” studies to be valuable academic exercises, but not something that can be directly applied to daily production issues."

The Phu Kham copper-gold operation located in Laos People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) is owned and operated by Phu Bia Mining Limited. PanAust Limited, based in Brisbane Australia, holds a 90 per cent interest in Phu Bia Mining Limited, with the remaining 10 per cent held by the Government of Laos PDR.The 12Mt/y copper-gold concentrator at Phu Kham commenced production in April 2008. Flotation copper and gold recovery from commissioning was consistently poor, due to the high levels of pyrite and problematic secondary and oxide copper species and non-sulfide gangue.The low recoveries of copper and gold from Phu Kham were recognised during the feasibility study design phase. A bulk sulfide flotation regime in roughing produced high recoveries, however a large capacity cleaning circuit was required and there was risk of not meeting saleable concentrate grade specifications. The installed design offered a capital efficient compromise to ensure that a concentrate grade of 24% copper could be achieved at acceptable recoveries.Incremental improvements in copper recovery were achieved by 2011 through conversion of conditioning cells to flotation cells in both roughing and first cleaning and increased cleaner capacity through the installation of a Jameson cell. In 2012 the Phu Kham Upgrade Project was commissioned to increase mill throughput, along with additional rougher and cleaner capacity to increase residence times at the nominal 16 Mt/y throughput. The marginal reduction in primary grind size due to the additional ball milling power also provided a small recovery improvement.This paper presents the development, design, implementation, and performance of the Increased Recovery Project commissioned in April 2013 which targeted the major causes of copper loss from the circuit. Based on fundamental and detailed test work and mineralogical analysis of concentrator streams, an optimised design was developed which has increased copper and gold recoveries by over 5% and 10% respectively. The Increased Recovery Project has positioned the concentrator to process high pyrite ores that were previously considered untreatable, and opened further opportunities for maximising flotation recovery by de-bottlenecking plant regrind and cleaning capacity.CITATION:Hoyle, A, Bennett, D and Walker, P, 2015. Cameroon continued to enjoy sustained economic growth that began with its independence in 1960. Growth in the gross domestic product (GDP) averaged 2.8% per year during the 1960's and the first half of the 1970's. Starting in 1976 and for the succeeding 10 years, the GDP accelerated rapidly owing to the coming on-stream of Cameroon's small but domestically significant offshore oil industry. In 1985, the GDP grew by 7.8%, but in 1986, it was only up 5.5%. The country's sustained economic growth in dollar terms of gross national product (GNP) per capita reached $1,075 in 1986. The ranking in GNP per capita by the International Monetary Fund put Cameroon in the middle-income category for developing countries. The sustained economic growth rate up to 1986 was due to the injection of income from oil into the economy, but crude oil price reductions in 1986 brought a slowdown. In 1986, crude oil production grew to 200,000 barrels per day, an increase of 8.2% from that of 1985. Most of the oil came from the Société Nationale Elf Aquitaine (SNEA) wells in the multifield Rio del Rey complex. Additional output came from the Moudi Field operated by Compagnie Française des Pétroles S.A. Proven oil reserves in Cameroon were 540 million barrels. At 1986 production rates, and in the absence of further discoveries, Cameroon will have exhausted its recoverable oil reserves by the year 1995. Owing to worldwide crude price reductions, the country's oil income fell 60% between 1985 and 1986, from $1.82 billion2 to $0.72 billion. Cameroon's refinery operator commenced operating the Sonara refinery in 1981 at Point Limboh. Sonara's capacity of 43,000 barrels per day was small by most standards. In 1986, natural gas reserves, estimated at 100 billion cubic meters, were not produced commercially because there were no domestic users. Proposals for a multibillion-dollar liquefied natural gas plant at Kribi had been submitted; however, work on the plant had not commenced.

The presence of an extensive soft siltstone layer in the middle of the inter-burden sequence of rocks at Syferfontein Colliery in South Africa prompted tests to determine the effect of different mid-column decks of inert material in the siltstone layer. The objective was to achieve significant cost savings in explosives use whilst not degrading dragline productivity. An important factor that had to be considered was that the initiation systems available in South Africa are not accurate enough to ensure simultaneous initiation of explosives decks in a hole.

Several growth chamber and laboratory experiments were conducted to study the germination behavior of plant species on mine spoils and plant growth responses to nutrients on spoils and topsoils. Experiments were conducted to study the germination potential of some native and introduced species under various conditions. The seeds of green needlegrass, side oats grama, thickspike wheatgrass, crested wheatgrass, birdsfoot trefoil and emerald crownvetch were less tolerant, whereas those of alkali sacaton. durar hard fescue, slender wheatgrass, yellow sweetclover and alfalfa were most tolerant to the sodic mine spoil conditions. Addition of leonardite improved the germination potential of some of the poor genninators. Slender wheatgrass and yellow sweetclover were used as test plants to study the fertility status and productivity potential of stockpiled topsoils and spoils collected from Center. Glenharold and South Beulah of North Dakota. The topsoils were neither saline nor sodic but low in N and P. The spoils were neutral to alkaline with SAIL of 12-32, EC of 1.8-5.5 mmhos/cm, Olsen&apos;s P< µ4g/g, and total N <0.07%. Application of N and P together to the topsoils increased the yield of wheatgrass and sweetclover by 88% and 70% of their respective maximum yields, whereas near maximum yields were obtained for both the species by the same treatments to the spoils. The average yields on topsoils were higher than the yields on spoils. The concentrations of major nutrients were higher in plants grown on topsoil, whereas the opposite was true with the concentrations of Mn, Zn, and Cu. Growth chamber experiments were also conducted to study the growth responses of alfalfa, oats and slender wheat grass by the application of Mn and Zn to a sodic coal mine spoil which was previously used for pot culture experiments. Significant growth responses to Mn and Zn were observed in alfalfa but not in oats or slender wheatgrass. Fertilizing the spoil with Mn along with NPK increased the yield of alfalfa to 85% and with Mn + Zn to 99%. Growth responses and plant composition results of this study confirm that the application of major nutrients to spoils can accentuate Zn and Mn deficiencies in some plants.

No one process, product or effect of the minerals sector can be viewed in isolation when addressing sustainable development. Meaningful assessments of the minerals sector require that its processes and production are drawn together in a generic framework that gives a holistic view of its performance and progress. Lifecycle Assessment is increasingly accepted as an appropriate means of constructing such a framework. It is a step beyond using the simplistic concept of the triple bottom line of social, environmental and economic performance to drive and communicate sustainable development. However, fundamental questions need to be raised about the scope and purpose of lifecycle assessment, such as what effects and performances should be assessed, for whom should they be assessed, and what performance indicators should be used and how should they be selected. The principles of eco-efficiency, industrial ecology, The Natural Step (TNS) and other pertinent philosophies and initiatives driving mineral sector sustainable development are outlined to support a lifecycle stewardship vision for the minerals sector. Articulating this vision through a holistic lifecycle indicator system showing inputs and outputs, natural partnerships, effects on community, environment and economy facilitates recognition of problems, opportunities and partnerships that can be usefully pursued.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Tifalmin porphyry copper district is located in the Star Mountains roughly 35 km north-east of the Ok Tedi mine. The district is a cluster of temporally and geochemically related porphyry copper deposits and their associated skarns. It covers an area of roughly 10 × 6 km and comprises at least three intrusions (Olgal, Futik and Kum Kom) where drilling has demonstrated the presence of porphyry copper mineralisation, and another three intrusions (Rattatat, Unfin and Pad 48) where porphyry copper mineralisation is strongly suggested by surface investigations and geochemical or geophysical signatures.Copper and gold mineralisation was first discovered in the area in the 1960s as part of the regional exploration program by Kennecott that located Ok Tedi. The mineralisation is associated with poly-phase porphyritic diorites, quartz diorites and tonalites that intrude the Upper Eocene to Middle Miocene Darai limestone and underlying Cretaceous to Eocene Feing Group. Radiometric K-Ar and U-Pb zircon ages cluster between 4 and 2 Ma for both the mineralised and post-mineral intrusions. In addition to porphyry-type mineralisation, variable amounts of calc-silicate and/or magnetite skarn occur near the contact of most of the intrusions. Mineralisation in the Olgal and Futik porphyries occurs as chalcopyrite replacement of mafic minerals and in a stockwork of micro-veinlets. Mineralisation mostly occurs in the intrusions but is also observed in hornfelsed siltstones and sandstones of the Feing Group on the southern margin of the Olgal intrusive body. Quartz veining is uncommon. Secondary magnetite is commonly associated with the highest copper and gold grades. Sericitic alteration is most prominent in the mineralised hornfels. Structurally, the area is dominated by syn- to post-mineralisation thrusting from the north. At least one of the deposits (Olgal) appears to be truncated at depth by a thrust fault.CITATION:Queen, L D, 2015. The new euphoria in diamond exploration brings with it a need to understand the challenges that new projects can face in different stages of the development and risks that the commercial outcomes from the new projects fall short of expectations. In many cases, the problems are related to a poor understanding of the technical risks and a failure to adequately address them during the course of investigation. Failure to evaluate all disciplines to the same level of certainty could lead to a situation where the important issues are only identified late in the project development, resulting in costly delays and financial difficulties. The diamond projects located in Canadian Arctic, with its challenging environmental, geographical, social, political and geological contexts are especially sensitive to the high variability of the outcome. This presentation highlights some of the technical aspects that could be the leading sources of risk in diamond projects and could ultimately result in inappropriate mine designs, reducing the economic outcome.

The Niagara Tunnel Project (NTP) is a 10.4-km- (6.5- mile-) long, 14.4-m (47.5-ft) bored tunnel that will run under the city of Niagara Falls from the Upper Niagara River to the Sir Adam Beck power station. The completed project will enhance the capacity of the Sir Adam Beck power station by adding 500 m3 /sec (17,657 cu ft/sec) of water through the tunnel. The project uses the world?s largest hard-rock tunnel boring machine (TBM) at 14.4 m (47.5 ft) in diameter to excavate the tunnel. Features of the project include the use of a high performance (HP) main beam TBM, state-of-the-art ground support and tunnel logistics systems. A continuous conveyor is used for muck transport from the TBM to the disposal area In June 2004, the Ontario government announced that Ontario Power Generation (OPG) had been given approval to proceed with the third tunnel under the city of Niagara Falls ? the first two tunnels were constructed in the 1950s using drill-and-blast techniques. The third tunnel, appropriately named the Niagara Tunnel Project (NTP), consists of a 10.4-km- (6.5-mile-) long TBM-bored, concrete-lined tunnel with a finished diameter of 12.5 m (41.1 ft). In August 2005, OPG the selected of Strabag of Austria, one of the largest construction companies in Europe, as the contractor to build the NTP at a price of C$600 million. In September 2005, Strabag selected The Robbins Co. of Solon, OH to design, manufacture and deliver a new 14.4- m- (47.5-ft-) diameter high performance, state-of-the-art main beam hard rock TBM to be used in the excavation of the tunnel. To meet the aggressive construction schedule as requested by OPG/Strabag, the TBM needed to be sup-plied as ready-to-bore within a 12-month period after the contract was awarded to Robbins.

Green rust (GR) are layered Fe(II)-Fe(III) double hydroxides, having a pyroaurite-type structure consisting of positively charged hydroxide layers and hydrated ions in interlayers. This special feature of GR is very efficient for wastewater treatment as the pollutants are easily taken in or exchanged with the anions in the interlayers. It can be simply and cost-effectively produced by electrocoagulation (EC). Chicken processing plant (CPP) produces large amount of wastewater containing variety of readily biodegradable organic compounds, fats, and proteins. The possible re-use of properly treated CPP wastewater would be economic and environment friendly. In this study, we present our work on treatment of CPP wastewater using EC, specifically for the removal of COD. Analysis of the EC-treated water for reuse in the same plant is discussed considering the U.S.EPA regulations. Two types of EC-reactors were used for this purpose. To better understand the treatment mechanism, EC-floc was also characterized using XRD and SEM-EDS.

Worker safety is an issue that transcends industries, whether it be mining, construction, manufacturing or even general office work. In the mining industry, safety and training are particularly important because mining is a dangerous occupation. Throughout the years, federal and state safety regulations have been written and revised to keep up with the changing technologies. And mine operators have installed their own safety and training programs. They have come to realize that a safe and healthy workforce has positive effects on productivity and profitability —not to mention avoiding the high costs of injury-related absenteeism.
