The use of coal as a fuel causes air, pollution in; a number of different forms, and in nearly all stages of its, handling, preparation, storage, use and-disposal of its residue. First let us consider the handling of coal. As shipped, particularly to large utilities, it is run-of-mine bituminous made up of large chunks as well as pulverized particles. Because it 'is in an open car or barge, it is subject to the action o winds and the small particles may be blown around adding to the-particulate load in the atmosphere. Mien un¬loaded from the barge or car, there is again an opportunity for the wind to blow the fine particles around. All of us I am sure have seen a barge at the dock of a utility plant being unloaded by a clamshell bucket. This, after grabbing its load from the barge, lifts it some 60 or 70 feet and, then drops it on a conveyor, which carries the coal to a storage area.

"Sulphide concentrates may exhibit self-heating to various degrees during storage or shipping, the worst cases presenting a serious hazard from fire and SO2 emission. Based on measurements of heating rates on a wide variety of concentrate samples in a special apparatus, combined with field experience, a methodology has been developed which allows concentrates to be rated for their heating potential. This has proven to be very useful in practice, for example, in deciding on the need to take preventive measures. Oxidation under ambient conditions in the presence of moisture initiates heating locally within a stockpile. In the case of highly active materials, such as those that contain abundant pyrrhotite, heating may progress through three stages to temperatures well above 5000C. However, most concentrates show little or no propensity to selfheat. Heating rates were used to estimate values of the heat output, or self-heating capacity (in joules per gram), which sustains the process at each stage. Thermal data from differential scanning calorimetry are also reported. Variables which affect self-heating are discussed and an actual case of heating control on a stockpile by covering is described. A simple apparatus which can be used to simulate stockpiling conditions has been tested successfully and is proposed as a convenient test system.INTRODUCTIONPrevious publications from this laboratory on the evaluation of self-heating in sulphides dealt with tailings backfill (Rosenblum et al. 1982) and waste rock (Rosenblum and Spira 1995). Sulphide concentrates may likewise exhibit self-heating in storage or during shipping. In a comprehensive but dated review, Kirshenbaum (1 968) pointed out the conflicting nature of information on means of controlling the problem, particularly with regard to the application of water and ventilation. Modelling by Simpson (1 97 1) of autogenous heating in stockpiled zinclead concentrate and associated field measurements by Wright et al. (1972) showed that the supply of oxygen by wind and the shape of the piles were the major factors in the development of hot spots. Simpson did not attempt to explain the complex mechanism of self-heating, simply ascribing its onset to oxidation. Pearse (1 980) investigated a potential method of testing for selfheating which consisted of (i) reaction with hydrogen peroxide and (ii) differential thermal anal sis, to characterize the response of concentrates at both ambient and temperatures above 100 C. He found the method sensitive enough to identify the need for careful handling but not to predict ignition. He recommended compacting concentrates and covering stockpiles with plastic sheeting to prevent ingress of air. All these workers recognized the key role played by oxygen and moisture in triggering self-heating."

New Zealand China Clays produces a unique halloysite clay product at Matauri Bay, Northland.   The company has licences over four deposits that were derived from the weathering of rhyodacite domes. Clay is mined and processed from two of the four deposits and is refined using a complex process based on gravity separation.   The product is almost entirely exported to niche markets in 24 countries. The main market is the fine ceramic industry where the product is used as a component in the manufacture of high quality porcelain and bone china bodies. The use of halloysite in these bodies gives the manufacturer the ability to achieve high whiteness and translucency. The other major market is for use in technical ceramics, where the product is sought after due to its high purity, fine particle size and stability at high temperatures.

After emphasizing the importance of quantitative rock mass classifications in mining, originally directed to selection of rock support measures, but subsequently to estimates of rock mass properties such as rock mass strength and rock mass modulus of deformation, current attention calls for a classification specifically for rock mass excavability by tunnel boring machines (TBMs), which are used extensively in tunneling as well as in the mining industry. This paper introduces the Rock Mass Excavability (RME) index for predicting excavability of rock masses by TBMs using a quantification of machine performance and rock mass conditions. The RME index is based on five input parameters aimed at relating rock mass behavior and machine characteristics: (1) uniaxial compressive strength of the rock material, (2) drillability/abrasivity, (3) rock mass jointing at mine drift face, (4) standup time of the excavation, and (5) groundwater inflow. Development of the RME index entailed the collection of extensive data from more than 28 km of tunnels and some 400 case records from projects in Spain involving double-shield TBMs. In the process, a number of statistical correlations have been established between RME and such output parameters as degree of machine utilization, advance and penetration rates, thrust and torque of the cutterhead, and the specific energy of excavation. It was found that the RME index provides a particularly significant correlation for predicting the average rate of advance (m/day). In essence, the RME index is a classification system that features interaction of rock mass conditions with boring machine characteristics for use in the early stages of a project. It should be noted that the RME index does not replace the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) or Q-systems as used in mining and tunneling; indeed, one of the RME input parameters, standup time, is determined from the RMR. However, the approach presented introduces a specialized tool relevant to excavating tunnels and drifts. Possible applications to hard-rock mining are explored.

Neutralization with lime is a simple, cheap, and effective means of treating acid raffinates from uranium processing to' raise the pH, reduce the concentrations of dissolved salts (including heavy metal impurities), and remove amine by adsorption. Two-stage neutralization, using limestone in the first stage at approximately pH 4 and lime in the second, lIlay be advantageous.Lime neutralization of mffinates in the pH range 7 to 8· 5 generally reduced the radium ·concentration to 10 to 200 pCi 1-1, but ·there was considerable scatter in the experimental data. The radium concentration was further reduced to less than 3 pCi 1-1 by co-precipitation of barium (radium) sulphate with 10 mg Ba (as barium chloride) per litre of raffinate. Adsorption of radium on barytes was -also effective in reducing the radium concentration in neutralized raffinate to less than 3 pCi 1-1.The radium concentration of pit water was readily reduced to less than 3 pCi 1-1 when pit water containing 0·01 M sulphate as ammonium, calcium, or sodium sulphate was treated with 20 mg Ba per litre of pit water.Adsorption on barytes was also effective in removing radium from pit water containing 0·03 M sulphate.

In another part of this issue we have reported the results of some test results made upon one of the safety powders. It will pay every c o n t r a c t o r, miner, or user of explosives in any form to carefully re a d the article re f e r red to. Dynamite has done a gre a t work in the service of man, as did black powder before it; but its i n h e rent dangers are admitted by all and are proved by the long list of deaths and injuries, and destruction to property which annually occur through its use. Why should we continue to use an explosive that annually kills and maims hund reds of men, when others are available which are equally powerful, no more expensive and far less liable to accidental discharg e ? Dynamite when first manufacture d is pure and comparatively safe; but most unfortunately it does not always stay pure; it “rots,” and then it is exceedingly dangerous. More than this, the explosive part of dynamite is a liquid, nitro - g l y c e rine, which is absorbed or soaked up by sawdust, wood pulp or the like. So long as this liquid nitro - glycerine remains pure and remains “soaked up,” or absorbed t h e re is little danger. It has been found, however, that the nitro - g l y cerine leaks under certain conditions. During thawing it fre q u e n t l y leaks out of the stick, or if it becomes wet the water causes the n i t ro-glycerine to leak out. In either case free liquid nitro - g l y c e r i n e escapes, and in that free state it may be exploded by any very slight shock. Nor is this all, if a stick of frozen dynamite be bro k e n a c ross it has been found by tests that the frozen nitro - g l y c e r i n e w h e re thus broken is very sensitive to shocks afterward .

Conventional augered, cast-in-place (ACIP) piles were introduced into the New York City area as a result of the damage to existing structures caused by pile driving operations. ACIP piles are often specified where deep foundations are to be installed adjacent to transit facilities, sensitive underground utilities or in close proximity to existing structures. However, loss-of-ground issues associated with the installation of ACIP piles have prevented the wide-scale use of these systems. Beginning in 2002, Berkel & Company Contractors, Inc. began using its augered, cast-in-place displacement (ACIPD) system in the New York City area. Like conventional ACIP piles, this system produces almost no vibration. Also, as almost no material is brought to the surface, there is no opportunity for loss of ground. This paper presents a description of Berkel's displacement pile system and a brief discussion of six projects in the New York City area that have been executed with this system over the past two years.

Over the last years, the importance of the assessment of environmental and social aspects as well as of issues of good governance has increased significantly in mining finance. For this, international standards as well as internal guidelines of the banks and other involved institutions have been established and continuously improved. Considering these standards and regulations, the banks can influence the sustainability of mining projects - and they have done so in the past -, mainly by implementing certain provisions and covenants in the loan documentation, binding the financing to the mining company’s adherence to the agreed sustainability standards. However, there are limits to the banks’ influence due to the competitive environment with other available means of financing. Nevertheless, the experience of the last years has shown that the standards and regulations bound to the financing by the banks help to lead the mining industry towards more sustainable projects.

Since the reintroduction of soil mixing to the United States over 10 years ago, the work installed by soil mixing technology has grown dramatically. From an annual turnover of less than ten million dollars per year the volume of soil mixing put in place has grown to an estimated $40 million per year in the year 2000. The majority of work done to date has involved walls, either for excavation support, permanent retaining structures or hydraulic cut-off walls. The other major use for soil mixing has been for mass stabilization of soils whether for isolation of contaminants or for retaining structures. This paper will discuss the uses of and costs of typical soil mix structures. BACKGROUND Soil mixing is defined as the in-situ combining of reagents, typically cement, with native soils, the purpose being to modify or improve the ground. This history of soil mixing covers only the use of cement slurry, aggregated with soil in-situ by mechanical mixing methods only. Soil mixing by use of high-pressure hydraulic means, also known as Jet Grouting, will not be discussed. In addition this will not cover ex-situ (above ground) mixing, or mixing dry reagents with soil. Only mixing applications for building, civil and heavy construction applications will be discussed, with only passing reference made to uses of soil mixing for environmental remediation work.

Rehabilitation, reclamation and restoration are all terms used to describe the repair of land after mining. Here, restoration is used to mean restoring the land's original use, capability or productivity. Effective restoration is dependent on good planning before mining commences and must include a clear definition of post-mining objectives. The physical condition of the land within the mining licence was that of an imperfectly drained soil in permanent pasture, supporting a seasonal supply dairying unit. During the mining process, the soil layers were separated, with the topsoil stockpiled separately. As part of the restoration process, the land was recontoured to encourage surface drainage, with topsoil spread evenly over the recontoured tailings. Low grond pressure machinery was used to minimise soil compaction, with light discing and harrowing used to increase water infiltration. A permanent pasture was sown, with weed species controlled by spraying, both before and after pasture establishment.  Soil testing has been used extensively to ensure there were no nutrient deficiencies that good compromise pasture establishment and performance. Controlled grazing practices were used to ensure that the sown pastures became well established.

Since its enactment in 1991, the Resource Management Act (RMA) has generated both praise and criticism. The major criticism is in relation to the costs the Act poses to industry and the time it takes to work through the process. In response to such criticisms the Minister for the Environment has initiated a review of the implementation of the RMA. The Minister's proposals for reform have not yet been released and the discussion that follows is based upon the report by the Minister's Review Group which was released in September.

In the mining industry, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling is used extensively to simulate air flow in underground mines. CFD modeling of pollutant transport in open-pit mines is relatively new. Modeling the actual pit geometry of an open-pit mine and the open domain is complex. The complexity is primarily due to the faceted geometry of an open-pit mine with its numerous associated sharp features. Important issues that are not considered carefully at the geometry level are generally propagated to the subsequent processes. Several challenges and pitfalls are encountered in modeling pollutant transport in open-pit mines. These challenges and pitfalls are related to the geometry, meshing, boundary conditions, and turbulence modeling parameterization. An appropriate mesh selection is critical. A detail discussion of the meshing of the domain of an open-pit mine is presented in this paper. The selection of an appropriate turbulence model, such as kappa-epsilon (?-e), large eddy simulation (LES), Reynolds stress model (RSM), etc., to obtain the best possible solution is equally significant. This paper discusses the various challenges in modeling the pollutant transport process in an open pit and some of the approaches adopted to address these challenges.

This is the final article in a three-part series on microcomputers and application software in the mineral industry. The first article covered microcomputer terms and concepts. The second discussed exploration and mining software. This article will examine plant, administrative, and geotechnical software. Every effort has been made to be current in the latest software developments. Rapid change, however, is a fact of life in the computer world and any omission is inadvertent. Introduction Geotechnical disciplines have received considerable attention in software programming. Calculations are repetitive and the formulas needed to solve them are not extremely complicated. These programs are ideally suited to the microcomputer and the microcomputer is ideally suited to the consulting geologist or engineer, due to its low cost and reliability. In fact, the advent of the Apple (a registered trademark of Apple Computer Inc.) and, more recently, the IBM personal computer has caused an explosion of inexpensive software programs available to the microcomputing public. Another area that has benefited from computerization, although not in the same way, has been mineral beneficiation. Here, process control for start-up or phase-down operations has been used in newer plants for some time. Programs to perform various calculations are becoming more common as micros increase in number. Tappi Journal has a section with solutions to handheld-calculator and microcomputer problems. Process Modeling Most process modeling is still done only on mainframes. One such program is called ASPEN PLUS (a registered trademark of Aspen Technology), and a one-week course is recommended so the user can best use the program. This program is available through timesharing from University Computing Co. Programs to find an optimal solution using Linear Programming (LP) have been around for some time. Also, plant process simulation has been possible using simulation programs. Both simulation and LP are expensive to program and run. Although there are LP programs available for some micros, the user must be fairly knowledgeable about how to set up the problem. This is because each problem must be set up as a unique program that typically requires custom programming. There are some programs that can handle blending of mine crudes and examine economic parameters over the life of the mine. Plant Applications Areas relating to mine and plant applications with programs available for micros are maintenance, production reporting, inventory, accounting, and personnel scheduling. Maintenance Maintenance typically requires that certain jobs be performed in a particular sequence and parts be ordered with enough lead time for maintenance to take place on time. There is, therefore, a critical sequence of tasks that must be performed or the scheduled maintenance will not take place. Introduction It is estimated that nearly 40% of all the gold ever mined in free world countries has been produced by South African operations. There is concern that this immense productive capacity will soon decline. Such a decline could reduce world gold supply and lessen the ability of market economy countries (MEC) to exert the major influence upon the world gold market. This paper addresses three general issues concerning South African gold production: • How much gold remains to be recovered from the demonstrated resources of the 44 evaluated South African mines; • How long can production at current levels continue; and • What will be its cost. Table 1 provides production data on the world's 10 largest producers for the years 1971, 1981, and 1983. As shown, South African gold production declined significantly from 1971 through 1981. As of 1981, annual South African gold production had dropped by more than 311 t (10 million oz) in 10 years. Despite this, its mines still produced 656 t (21 million oz) that year, about half the world total. From 1981 through 1983, this trend was reversed. Annual South African gold production increased by more than 21.8 t (700,000 oz). The trend reversal was also evident in the US, Canada, and Australia. This illustrates the general, inverse relationship between gold price and gold production. In South Africa especially, as gold prices increased substantially during the 1970s, the average grade of ore mined (pay limit) was lowered as new, lower grade areas and materials were exploited. Gold production declined in volume. But gold revenues increased, and the lives of the operations were extended. The 1981-83 period was one of declining (US dollar-based, average annual) gold prices that resulted in increasing South African production as average ore grades were raised. South Africa currently accounts for 50% of world production (Fig. 1). Figure 2 illustrates South Africa's contribution to total MEC production in 1971 and 1983. Although South Africa's relative share of production has declined, it still represents the single most important source of new gold supply. In 1983, it supplied more than 65% of total MEC production. South Africa currently produces more than twice as much gold as the Soviet Union (ranked second in world production), and 11 times more gold than the US (ranked fourth in world production). The Geological Resource Map of New Zealand (GERM) is a computerised inventory of aggregate, mineral, coal, petroleum and thermal water occurrences, containing summary information on location, production, geology, and geochemistry. The types of occurrences include quarries, mines, gold dredges, wells, outcrops, seeps, springs, and fields. The file contains entries for about 10,300 sites and is used to produce tables of data and maps at any scale, for single or multiple commodities. The published format is the New Zealand 'Geological Survey map series Geological Resource Map of New Zealand 1:250 000'. Seventeen of the 27 map sheets covering New Zealand were published by August 1991, with three more close to publication.

The mineral processing industry has followed the development of database control systems, and various systems have been installed in existing and new plants. The goal is to improve product quality, raise productivity and lower production costs. Improvements in different units for mineral .processing .have been applied. This has led to increasing information for the operators. To support the operators and for an easy overview of the process, a complete concept for an integrated process-control system is required. This paper describes the plant-wide [process control system for the Collahuasi copper project located in northern Chile. The total investment for the project was $1,700,000,000 and included a port area and two copper processing plants, an oxide plant with a cathode production of 50 tons per year and a sulfide plant with a concentrate production of 330 kilotons per year. The main characteristics of the plant-wide process control system include a 200- kilometer long redundant control network and a 24-kilometer long redundant serial network providing coverage for the entire plant. The plants are located around 4,700 meters above sea level, serial communication lids allow the integration of over 2,700 SCADA data units, and the system handles over 7,500 physical signals plus the SCADA data integration. The main equipment consists of 39 different sized controllers, 16 operator stations, 5 engineering stations, 2 information management systems and 4 X- terminals. The project management, control configuration, factory acceptance test, system integration test, training, commissioning and start-up were carried out in close cooperation with the customer. The result was completely satisfactory for the customer.

From 19BS thru the present, Guy F. Atkinson Construction Company has been involved in several transportation construction projects in the Seattle area. Two of these contracts, the Mt. Baker Ridge Tunnel, and The Seattle Bus Tunnel, had unique foundation features. MT. BAKER RIDGE TUNNEL ACCESS PITS The Mt. Baker Ridge Tunnel is part of the general upgrading of the I-90 freeway between I-405 and I-5 (see Fig. 1). It is located on the western shore of Lake Washington and consists of a 1300 foot long large diameter tunnel thru Mt. Baker Ridge. The ridge consists of over consolidated silts and clays overlain by a loose to medium dense silty fine sand. The water table is perched in this upper layer of material. The clays of Seattle have a history of being very sensitive to excavation. The hills are marginally stable and numerous landslides have occurred recently in the area of the tunnel. [ ]
