Lime-enhanced carbothermic reduction may provide an alternative process for treating low grade chalcopyrite concentrates. To date, most research on lime-enhanced reduction has been on pure, synthetic sulfides. In this study, preliminary experiments were carried out on natural chalcopyrite using a thermal analysis system to assess the rate and extent of reaction at several temperatures and identify the major solid and gaseous reaction products. Calculations were performed to establish the thermodynamic limits of the reactions in the temperature range of interest in order to identify the potential conditions for processing chalcopyrite concentrate. The study found that finely ground chalcopyrite can be reduced carbothermically in the presence of lime at moderate temperatures and in a reasonable time to form metallic copper, with the sulphur reporting virtually entirely to calcium sulfide. At temperatures below about 750?770ºC calcium ferrite is the stable form of iron whereas at higher temperatures metallic iron is stable. Further work is required to demonstrate the reaction on a scale to obtain sufficient sample for evaluation of subsequent processing steps to remove the gangue material and iron products from the copper.

Against the receding background of the October stock market crash and the December overhang of inventories, the economy began with a shaky start in 1988. As 1988 began, the Administration's estimate of real growth for 1988 had just been reduced from 3.5% to 2.4% and economists and other ob-servers were concerned that the expansion that was 5 years old might be near the end and that a recession might be around the corner. The ensuing moderately strong economic activity, however, belied all the negative signals that were evident earlier, and the real GNP continued to grow at an estimated 2.3% annual rate during the first quarter of 1988, extending the ongoing recovery into the sixth year (table 1.). The relatively accommodative policy of the Federal Reserve Board (the discount rate was cut by 0.25% in January), a strong performance by the export sector, and the revival of consumer spending were major forces underlying the economic strength. But as the quarter drew to a close, signs of tight capacity utilizations were apparent in many of the export and capital goods sectors, including textile, chemical, plastic, metal, and machinery. Employment was at a record high level while the unemployment rate was close to a historical low. Prices were rising at a faster pace than those of 1987, and the dollar resumed its slide after a brief recovery in January and February. These factors gave rise to the fears of higher inflation. Long-term interest rates increased, casting a pall over the prospect of a robust growth for the rest of the year.

"Since 2005, longwall coal mine operators in Pennsylvania (US) have been required to collect extensive hydrologic and biological data to document pre- and post-mining conditions of aquatic resources (streams and wetlands) overlying the subsidence control plan areas. Continued operation of the longwall mine is dependent upon empirical data demonstrating that the undermined aquatic resources have either been maintained or restored to an accepted range of pre-mining conditions. This study used quantitative hydrologic methods and comparative biological metrics to examine response of aquatic resources to longwall subsidence at the Bailey Mine located in Greene County, Pennsylvania. This study analyzed data from over 25 miles of streams and over 8 acres of wetlands that traverse the 4,779-acre study area. Hydrologic analysis of flow intermittency suggested that there are variable degrees of change to headwater streams immediately following mining; however, the majority of the effects are reversible through streamflow mitigation measures. Furthermore, the post-mining discharge from streams can be restored to within the range of pre-mining conditions the majority of the time. Biological assessments showed that greater than 95% of assessed stream length has maintained its ability to support benthic macroinvertebrate communities following mining and intervention (i.e., mitigation). Comparative metrics of the benthic macroinvertebrate communities showed that the biological community in 48 of the 50 sample sites is being maintained or restored across both high- and low-gradient streams. The effectiveness of intervention was further substantiated by the similarity in recovery times between streams having no intervention (median = 2.1 years, 95th percentile = 4.9 years) and streams with intervention, when recovery times were measured from the date of the intervention (median = 1.7 years, 95th percentile = 4.7 years). Changes to individual wetlands were observed between the pre- and post-mining assessments, but cumulatively a net gain of 7% in wetland acreage was realized. Hydrologic assessments were used to infer whether there was a potential that streams had been affected by mining; however, the ultimate test of stream recovery is based on biological metrics that establish the relative quality of the biological communities following mining. Overall, the hydrologic balance is being protected and the aquatic life use of streams is being maintained within the Bailey Mine’s subsidence control plan areas."

"Since 1975, the Aluminium Pechiney Research Centre at Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne (LRF) has been concentrating its efforts on designing, testing and perfecting the Aluminium Pechiney point-fed prebaked reduction cell.In 1979, the AP18 cell (180 kA) was industrially launched with the construction and start-up of the F line in Saint-Jean. The following generation, the AP30 (300 kA), with prototypes started in 1981, was launched in 1986 on the Saint-Jean G line. Along with cell design, efficient process control systems were developed to pilot alumina feeding and bath composition. Together, these pots are currently producing 4.6 Mt of aluminum, i.e., 18% of the world’s overall yearly production.In 1989, the research centre faced a new challenge: to push the limits for the size of a reduction cell to further improve the profitability of Greenfield projects. This new generation development was also the opportunity for a significant redesign of the Aluminium Pechiney electrolysis information system.With a track record of ten years of semiindustrial operation with three prototypes, the AP50 technology is now ready for industrial implementation and enables a significant breakthrough to be made in terms of return on investment of a Greenfield smelter."

In a Bureau of Mines supply evaluation, the known uranium resources in the United States are estimated to have a total recoverable uranium oxide (U3O8) content of 3,132,400 tons at prices up to $69.32 per pound. Only those resources were evaluated for which sufficient quantity data are available and process technology exists for recovering uranium. A total of 160,800 tons of U3O8 is available at $8 per pound from ore deposits presently mined and an additional 244,700 tons available at prices up to $30 per pound from similar but usually lower grade deposits. A total of 2,726,900 tons of U3O8 is available from four other resources: copper leach solutions, wet-process phosphoric acid, Florida phosphate rock Leached zone, and Chattanooga Shale. These resources contain from 30,000 tons of recoverable U30, at a price of $7.52 per pound as a byproduct of copper leach solutions to 2,557,300 tons at a price of $69.32 per pound from Chattanooga Shale.

Manipulation of hand-held objects in 3D space is a complex task. Understanding how individual digits interact with a hand-held object provides helpful information for hand tool designers, researchers, clinicians, and occupational therapists. At the object-digit interface, the contact mechanics can be represented by three force and three torque components. Six-component force/torque transducers can register all the three forces and three torques at the digit-object interface, and therefore are advantageous in the study of manipulation mechanics. The large number of force and torque signals from multiple force/torque transducers are difficult to interpret and therefore making experimental research of manipulation a challenging task. The purpose of this study was to develop a 3D visualization tool for the investigation of the contact mechanics at the object-digit interfaces during manipulation tasks. Methods A 3D stick-figure hand model was created based on digitized 23 anatomical landmarks of the hand. Five miniature 6-component force/torque transducers (4 × Nano17 for the fingers, 1 × Mini40 for the thumb, ATI Industrial Automation, NC) were used to record force and torque data at the tips of individual digits. Thirty channels of force/torque signals from the transducers were collected by a 16-bit analogue-digital converter (PCI-6031, National Instrument, Austin, TX) installed in a computer. The transducers were mounted on a custom-made rectangular aluminum handle for object manipulation. Coordinate frames were established at each transducer, on the handle, and at the base of the MicroScribe digitizer. To visualize the force vectors at the digit-tips, the coordinates of the hand landmarks in the MicroScribe coordinate frame and the force vectors in local transducer coordinate frames were transformed to a common coordinate frame defined on the handle. One healthy right-handed, male subject participated in the experimental study. During the tests, the participant sat in a chair by a testing table. The forearm was strapped to an arm holder in neutral rotation position. The instrumented handle was fixed on the testing table by a C-clamp through an adapting plate. With the hand of the subject gripped on the instrumental handle, the landmarks of the instrumented handle and the transducers, as well as the anatomical landmarks of the hand were digitized using the MicroScribe digitizer for the purpose of coordinate frame establishment and transformation as described above. The subject performed three different maximum isometric voluntary contraction tasks: (1) grasping, (2) rotating in pronation, and (3) lifting. Results The 3D hand model and representative force vector clusters in a single trial of grasping, rotating, and lifting tasks are shown in Figure 1. "Canada's mining industry has reason to celebrate the federal government's budget which was tabled on February 26, 1986. The budget contains an important proposal to improve the flowthrough share rules by effectively eliminating the investor's liability to third parties. This proposed rule change and other important budget proposals are the subject of this month's edition of Tax Notes. IntroductionWhile Finance Minister Michael Wilson's February 26, 1986 budget received a mixed reaction from business and labour leaders, the budget was mainly ""good news"" for the mining industry. A long-standing bugaboo in the flow-through share rules will be cleared up, a permanent set of rules will be installed for the tax treatment of Northern allowances, and limited partnerships will apparently be able to continue to serve a useful role in financing exploration programs. Flow-Through SharesThe present rules which apply to an investment in flow-through shares are structured in such a way that the relevant Canadian exploration expense (""CEE"") must be incurred by the investor, and not by the issuing corporation. Obviously, in the case of most flow-through share issues, this requirement that the investor incur the CEE poses a practical problem-the investor typically does not have the expertise or organization to incur the CEE. As a result, an integral part of most flowthrough arrangements is an agreement whereby the investor appoints another party (usually the issuing corporation) as his agent to spend the flow-through funds on CEE on his behalf. Although the issuing corporation might consequently be the party which actually spends the flow-through share funds on CEE, nevertheless the legal structure is such that the investor is the ""principal"" who is incurring the CEE. As such, the investor is legally responsible for any third-party claims with respect to the exploration program. Third-party liability might arise, for example, in the case of property damage, personal injury, environmental infractions, and so on."

One of the problems that arises in the early stages of the mine planning before the determination of the mining exploitation method is to predict what will be the recoverable ore reserves in tonnage, grade and metal quantity, if the select ion is based upon block grades. The estimation of these recuperation or recoverable functions can act as an important planning tool in what concerns the appraisal of the consequences of ore-waste discrimination of individual blocks in a selective mining operation. Estimation methods of all these functions are discussed together with cross validation tests using the available information concerning a preliminary drilling campaign accomplished during the exploration stage of an iron orebody located in the North of Portugal (Moncorvo Orebody).

The U.S. Bureau of Mines studied mineral resources of the Dragoon Mountains Unit, Coronado National Forest (54,264 ac), Cochise County, AZ. This study involves literature and field investigations with a focus on mine and prospect sites, which were inventoried and mapped; maps are contained in this report. Rock-chip samples were taken from mineralized zones and from some mine dumps; assays of the 477 samples are in appendixes. Mineral deposits are genetically and spatially related to Tertiary-age granitic intrusive activity. Most metallic mineral deposits are also strongly fault-controlled. Colored marble resources (270,000 st) are valued at approximately $6.5 million, if all were to be developed and sold as landscaping material in the form of-marble chips. However, with current demand, it is unlikely that regional markets could absorb all this material. Economic modeling of copper-zinc-silver skarns suggests none would be profitable to mine and capitalize at early 1993 commodity prices, mainly due to the small estimated size of the deposits (30,000 st to 40,000 st maximum). In the entire Unit, 140,000 st of inferred subeconomic skarn resources were estimated by USBM on five different skarn trends; measured subeconomic resources are negligible. Exploration by industry, 1992, was small-scale (on 2 skarn trends and 1 auriferous fault zone).

Montana sapphires were first discovered in alluvial deposits in the Helena area in 1865 and subsequently were discovered in other alluvial deposits in southwestern Montana and also in a lamprophyre dike at Yogo in central Montana. From about 1900 until the late 1930?s, when synthetic sapphire began to come into widespread industrial use, Montana sapphire mines produced large quantities mainly for watch bearings with lesser production for the gemstone market. The Yogo deposit is now mined for the gemstone market and two of the alluvial deposits are mined to produce sapphires for the fee-sieving of sapphire-bearing gravel and for the direct sale of gemstones. The generally pale-colored sapphires from the alluvial deposits in southwestern Montana are heated to enhance their colors whereas the generally blue sapphires from the Yogo deposit require no treatment. Markets for sapphires from both the alluvial deposits and the Yogo deposit are strong. In spite of reported historic production in excess of 70 tonnes, mineable resources appear to remain at most major deposits. Also abundant untested lamprophyre dikes in central Montana may host sapphires similar to those at the Yogo deposit.

Coals are found in all parts of Alaska, ranging in geologic age from Carboniferous to Tertiary, and grading from lignite through anthracite. Only the Matanuska and Nenana coal fields have been extensively developed. Nenana Field Today roughly 94% of the coal mined in Alaska comes from the Nenana field near Healy. The coal-bearing horizons in the Nenana field are found in a sedimentary sequence of Tertiary age approximately 2800 ft in thickness. The sediments rest directly on schists of possible Precambrian age. Individual coal beds in the field have been designated by both letters and numbers, starting with the alphabetical designations from A to G, and the numbers 1 to 6. Of these coals, the principal beds that are mined are F, 1, 2, and 3. These vary greatly in thickness, e.g., bed 1 ranges to over 50 ft, and beds 2 and 3 to 30-40 ft.

Five types of mineral resource were known in the sedimentary cover of the oceans and seas floors prior to the 1980s: 1. hydrocarbon fields including some very large zones of oil and gas accumulation; 2. æRed SeaÆ type thermal oozes with increased concentrations of noble metals; 3. ferromanganese nodules; 4. concentrations of metallic sulphides (æBlack SmokersÆ); and 5. cobalt-bearing ferromanganese crusts on the summits and slopes of seamounts.   Since then, the so called æWhite SmokersÆ, containing sulphides of copper and zinc, have been discovered. The ore horizons (manganese, copper, nickel and other metals) of the sedimentary cover of deep-sea basins comprise a sixth type of mineral resource in the oceans. These horizons have not only a theoretical, but also a principal economic significance.

This paper, describing the milling practices at the Minpro plant of the Tennessee Mineral Products Corporation, Spruce Pine, N. C., is the first of a series being prepared by the U.S. Bureau of Mines on feldspar milling methods and costs in the various feldspar producing areas in the United States. It describes not only the latest practices in feldspar grinding but includes studies of the cost of producing ground feldspar. These cost studies, obviously of interest to every consumer and purchaser of feldspar and to all feldspar grinders, are also of value to the small operator, who is generally prone to understimate his real costs. It describes the latest practices in feldspar milling and includes detailed costs of grinding. The cost tabulations presented show operating expenditures only and not total production costs. Details of costs are given only to the extent that they are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. A description of the recently installed milling unit for the preparation of granular glasspar by graded crushing, and magnetic separation is of particular interest. It illustrates how highly specialized feldspar milling has become, and to what an extent grinders are going to supply consumers with the products best suited for their particular needs.

Hong Kong’s Strategic Sewage Disposal Scheme (SSDS) Stage I involves the provision of a system of deep tunnels for transporting to a central treatment works wastewater collected from a number of catchments around Victoria Harbour. For the SSDS Stage I works, about 24 km of tunnels have been excavated in hard rock at depths ranging from about 80 to 150 m below Victoria Harbour and the surrounding heavily developed areas of Kowloon and Hong Kong. Five tunnel boring machines(TBMs) with diameters ranging from 3.2 m to 4.3 m were used to excavate the tunnels. Tunnel excavation has been completed and tunnel linings are in progress. Major tunnelling issues such as ground stabilisation and water control encountered in the project are summarised. An overview of one of the possible future tunnel systems that might be adopted in subsequent stages of SSDS is also presented.

The zinc pressure leach plant at HBM&S's operations is now in its fifteenth year of operation. Current pressure leach operation is steady at a concentrate processing rate of around 26.5 tonnes per hour. A new cellhouse with a design capacity of 124,000 tonnes per annum and the capability of expansion of up to 154,000 tonnes per annum was commissioned in July 2001. The potential to expand the capacity of the pressure leach circuit and associated processes, as well as the purification circuit and casting plant, to meet the maximum capacity of the cellhouse has been investigated. This paper reviews current operation of the zinc plant, as well as the possibility of a capacity increase without major process modifications or major capital expenditures.

Man’s search beneath the earth for minerals has always required light, and the devices used to provide illumination have been both innovative and unusual —from stone vessels holding fat and a wick of grass or fiber to a shower of sparks produced by a thin steel disc. While the date when lamps were first used in mines is unknown, Greek and Roman records from 3000 BC definitely mention their use in underground mines. Early Remans most likely used a lamp similar to the one depicted at right. Over the ages, various types of devicives and methods of illumination have been tried and used. One interesting scheme for underground light was to reflect sunlight down the shaft and along drifts using mirrors or other reflective materials. Bunches of resinous wood were also used for underground lighting in many parts of England. In the mid-18th century, the speding mill was developed in England. It worked by rapidly turning a thin steel disc against a flint, causing a shower of sparks to appear. The light produced was uncertain, highly variable, and unsafe in gaseous environments. In Europe, an open pan-type hanging oil lamp was developed and used in some operations in the 1700s. This type of lamp had one opening for a wick and a second opening for refilling the oil reservoir. The lamps were embellished with goad luck charms – a good luck rooster was used in many parts of Europe while a frog and “gluck-auf” were used in Germany. These lamps were introduced in Mexican mines, and a few have found their way into the southwest US. By 1850, a small wick lamp known as the lard-oil lamp, which resembled a tea pot, was invented in Scotland. These lamps were fueled with grease from a packing house –lard, bacon grease, or tallow. Whale oil was also used. Many improvements were made on these lamps, such as the use of windshields and the attachment of miners’ candle-holdm to support the lamp. While these lamps were handy and inexpensive to operate, they were dangerous because their large flame could ignite support timbers or other flammable materials. Miners from the United Kingdom brought this type of lamp into the US. Domestic producers of oil wick lamps were primarily located in Hazleton, PA; What Cheer, IA; Pittsburgh, PA; and Frostburg, IN. The first patent for an oil wick lamp was granted to W. Seybold of McKeesport, PA. Incidentally, these lamps were advertised in a 1903 Sears-Roebuck catalog for 10 cents apiece. Oil wick

Reconciliation has become very topical over the last ten years but how do we distinguish what is good practice, and even more importantly, show how it adds value? Reconciliation at Anglo American has received support from the very top of the company and this has enabled success in the design and implementation of a range of processes, reporting activities and actions. Focus has been on full Mine Value Chain Reconciliation (MVCR) from Resource to Product and on proactive cross-functional engagement. A standardised set of reconciliation definitions and relationships are used at all mines across the company to diagnose planning and performance issues. Results are formally presented in an efficient dashboard format, accompanied by a concise narrative to communicate what has been learned and what is being done to correct, improve or change practices. Importantly, effort has also been made to sustain MVCR by embedding good practice and quantifying the benefit of reconciliation explicitly via linking results to value.This paper sets out the lessons learned from the past two-years’ journey, highlighting areas where good practice has been defined and achieved. A ranking for quantifying reconciliation confidence over time is presented as a means of putting results into context and continuously improving the reconciliation process.
